Search

Understanding the properties of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) is key for many aspects of planetary science, particularly planetary defense. Our current knowledge of NEA sizes and regolith properties is heavily dependent on simple thermal models. These models are often used to analyze data from missions such as NEOWISE because they are well suited to deal with large volumes of data. However, simple model results based on NEOWISE data may be inconsistent with results based on other types of observation in some cases. In this work, we seek to better understand these potential inconsistencies, as well as the situations for which they are most prevalent. We do this by comparing simple model results based on Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX data to similar results based on NEOWISE data. This is carried out for six NEAs that represent a range of spectral types, shapes, and rotation states. We find that models based on SpeX and NEOWISE data for these six objects are inconsistent in some cases, even though the SpeX results are consistent with other methods and observations. We find that objects observed at fainter magnitudes and objects with more primitive compositions are more likely to produce inconsistent fits. These results highlight the importance of better understanding the limitations of simple models as applied to large survey data sets like NEOWISE. Focal plane wavefront sensing techniques are generally limited to using imaging systems that have below 1% spectral bandwidths, due to the radial smearing of speckles from chromatic diffraction that causes optical image magnification over larger spectral bandwidths. Wyne (1979) designed a pair of triplet lenses to optically minimize this chromatic magnification and increase the spectral bandwidth. Such a Wyne corrector could enable focal plane wavefront sensing at up to 50% spectral bandwidths and as a result open enable $>50x$ higher-speed focal plane wavefront sensing. We present results of the design and laboratory testing of a Wyne corrector prototype, including a detailed tolerancing analysis considering manufactural wavelength ranges and alignment tolerances. These tests show promising results that this technology can be deployed to current and future high speed focal plane wavefront sensing instruments to enable significant performance enhancements. Astronomical adaptive optics (AO) is a critical approach to enable ground-based diffraction-limited imaging and high contrast science, with the potential to enable habitable exoplanet imaging on future extremely large telescopes. However, AO systems must improve significantly to enable habitable exoplanet imaging. Time lag between the end of an exposure and end of deformable mirror commands being applied in an AO loop is now the dominant error term in many extreme AO systems (e.g., Poyneer et al. 2016), and within that lag component detector read time is becoming non-negligible (e.g., Cetre et al. 2018). This term will decrease as faster detector readout capabilities are developed by vendors. In complement, we have developed a modified Shack Hartmann Wavefront Sensor (SHWFS) to address this problem called the Focal-plane Actualized Shifted Technique Realized for a SHWFS (fastrSHWFS). The novelty of this design is to replace the usual lenslet array with a bespoke pupil-plane phase mask that redistributes the spot pattern on the detector into a rectangular array with a custom aspect ratio (in an extreme case, if the detector size can accommodate it, the array can be a single line). We present the fastrSHWFS concept and preliminary laboratory tests. The phenomenon of magnification bias can induce a non-negligible angular correlation between two samples of galaxies with nonoverlapping redshift distributions. This signal is particularly clear when background submillimeter galaxies are used, and has been shown to constitute an independent cosmological probe. This work extends prior studies on the submillimeter galaxy magnification bias to the massive neutrino scenario, with the aim being to assess its sensitivity as a cosmological observable to the sum of neutrino masses. The measurements of the angular cross-correlation function between moderate redshift GAMA galaxies and high-redshift submillimeter H-ATLAS galaxies are fit to the weak lensing prediction down to the arcmin scale. The signal is interpreted under the halo model, which is modified to accommodate massive neutrinos. We discuss the impact of the choice of cosmological parametrization on the sensitivity to neutrino masses. The currently available data on the magnification bias affecting submillimeter galaxies are sensitive to neutrino masses when a cosmological parametrization in terms of the primordial amplitude of the power spectrum $(A_s$) is chosen over the local root mean square of smoothed linear density perturbations $(\sigma_8$). A clear upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses can be derived if the value of $A_s$ is either fixed or assigned a narrow Gaussian prior, a behavior that is robust against changes to the chosen value., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We present a dynamical study of 39 active Centaurs and 17 high-perihelion (q$>$4.5 au) JFCs with a focus on investigating recent orbital changes as potential triggers for comet-like activity. We have identified a common feature in the recent dynamical histories of all active Centaurs and JFC in our sample that is not present in the history of the majority of inactive population members: a sharp decrease in semi-major axis and eccentricity occurring within the last several hundred years prior to observed activity. We define these rapid orbital changes as `a-jumps'. Our results indicate that these orbital reshaping events lead to shorter orbital periods and subsequently greater average per-orbit heating of Centaur nuclei. We suggest the a-jumps could therefore be a major trigger of cometary activity on Centaurs and JFCs. Our results further imply that analyses of the recent dynamical histories could be used to identify objects that are currently active or may become active soon, where we have identified three such Centaurs with recent a-jumps that should be considered high-priority targets for observational monitoring to search for activity., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJL

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment prepares its Phase-2 upgrade for the high-luminosity era of the LHC operation (HL-LHC). Due to the increase of occupancy, trigger latency and rates, the full electronics of the CMS Drift Tube (DT) chambers will need to be replaced. In the new design, the time bin for the digitisation of the chamber signals will be of around 1~ns, and the totality of the signals will be forwarded asynchronously to the service cavern at full resolution. The new backend system will be in charge of building the trigger primitives of each chamber. These trigger primitives contain the information at chamber level about the muon candidates position, direction, and collision time, and are used as input in the L1 CMS trigger. The added functionalities will improve the robustness of the system against ageing. An algorithm based on analytical solutions for reconstructing the DT trigger primitives, called Analytical Method, has been implemented both as a software C++ emulator and in firmware. Its performance has been estimated using the software emulator with simulated and real data samples, and through hardware implementation tests. Measured efficiencies are 96 to 98\% for all qualities and time and spatial resolutions are close to the ultimate performance of the DT chambers. A prototype chain of the HL-LHC electronics using the Analytical Method for trigger primitive generation has been installed during Long Shutdown 2 of the LHC and operated in CMS cosmic data taking campaigns in 2020 and 2021. We derive linearly polarized astrophysical component maps in the Northern Sky from the QUIJOTE-MFI data at 11 and 13 GHz in combination with the WMAP K and Ka bands (23 and 33 GHz) and all Planck polarized channels (30-353 GHz), using the parametric component separation method B-SeCRET. The addition of QUIJOTE-MFI data significantly improves the parameter estimation of the low-frequency foregrounds, especially the estimation of the synchrotron spectral index, $\beta_s$. We present the first detailed $\beta_s$ map of the Northern Celestial Hemisphere at a smoothing scale of $2^{\circ}$. We find statistically significant spatial variability across the sky. We obtain an average value of $-3.08$ and a dispersion of $0.13$, considering only pixels with reliable goodness-of-fit. The power law model of the synchrotron emission provides a good fit to the data outside the Galactic plane but fails to track the complexity within this region. Moreover, when we assume a synchrotron model with uniform curvature, $c_s$, we find a value of $c_s = -0.0797 \pm 0.0012$. However, there is insufficient statistical significance to determine which model is favoured, either the power law or the power law with uniform curvature. Furthermore, we estimate the thermal dust spectral parameters in polarization. Our CMB, synchrotron, and thermal dust maps are highly correlated with the corresponding products of the PR4 Planck release, although some large-scale differences are observed in the synchrotron emission. Finally, we find that the $\beta_s$ estimation in the high signal-to-noise synchrotron emission areas is prior-independent while, outside these regions, the prior governs the $\beta_s$ estimation., Comment: 25 pages, 29 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present QUIJOTE intensity and polarization maps in four frequency bands centred around 11, 13, 17 and 19GHz, and covering approximately 29000 deg$^2$, including most of the Northern sky region. These maps result from 9000 h of observations taken between May 2013 and June 2018 with the first QUIJOTE instrument (MFI), and have angular resolutions of around $1^\circ$, and sensitivities in polarization within the range 35-40 $\mu$K per 1-degree beam, being a factor $\sim 2$-$4$ worse in intensity. We discuss the data processing pipeline employed, and the basic characteristics of the maps in terms of real space statistics and angular power spectra. A number of validation tests have been applied to characterise the accuracy of the calibration and the residual level of systematic effects, finding a conservative overall calibration uncertainty of 5%. We also discuss flux densities for four bright celestial sources (Tau A, Cas A, Cyg A and 3C274) which are often used as calibrators at microwave frequencies. The polarization signal in our maps is dominated by synchrotron emission. The distribution of spectral index values between the 11GHz and WMAP 23GHz map peaks at $\beta=-3.09$ with a standard deviation of 0.14. The measured BB/EE ratio at scales of $\ell=80$ is $0.26\pm 0.07$ for a Galactic cut $|b|>10^\circ$. We find a positive TE correlation for 11GHz at large angular scales ($\ell \lesssim 50$), while the EB and TB signals are consistent with zero in the multipole range $30 \lesssim \ell \lesssim 150$. Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) are a key testbed for investigations into planet formation, asteroid dynamics, and planetary defense initiatives. These studies rely on understanding NEA sizes, albedo distributions, and regolith properties. Simple thermal models are a commonly used method for determining these properties, however they have inherent limitations due to the simplifying assumptions they make about asteroid shapes and properties. With the recent collapse of the Arecibo Telescope and a decrease of direct size measurements, as well as future facilities such as LSST and NEO Surveyor coming online soon, these models will play an increasingly important role in our knowledge of the NEA population. Therefore, it is key to understand the limits of these models. In this work we constrain the limitations of simple thermal models by comparing model results to more complex thermophysical models, radar data, and other existing analyses. Furthermore, we present a method for placing tighter constraints on inferred NEA properties using simple thermal models. These comparisons and constraints are explored using the NEA (285263) 1998 QE2 as a case study. We analyze QE2 with a simple thermal model and data from both the NASA IRTF SpeX instrument and NEOWISE mission. We determine an albedo between 0.05 and 0.10 and thermal inertia between 0 and 425 J m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1/2}$ K$^{-1}$. We find that overall the simple thermal model is able to well constrain the properties of QE2, however we find that model uncertainties can be influenced by topography, viewing geometry, and the wavelength range of data used., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

We summarize the comet science provided by surveys. This includes surveys where the detections of comets are an advantageous benefit but were not part of the survey\'s original intent, as well as some pointed surveys where comet science was the goal. Many of the surveys are made using astrophysical and heliophysics assets. The surveys in our scope include those using ground-based as well as space-based telescope facilities. Emphasis is placed on current or recent surveys, and science that has resulted since the publication of Comets II, though key advancements made by earlier surveys (e.g. IRAS, COBE, NEAT, etc.) will be mentioned. The proportionally greater number of discoveries of comets by surveys have yielded in turn larger samples of comet populations and sub-populations for study, resulting in better defined evolutionary trends. While providing an array of remarkable discoveries, most of the survey data has been only cursorily investigated. It is clear that continuing to fund ground- and space-based surveys of large numbers of comets is vital if we are to address science goals that can give us a population-wide picture of comet properties., Comment: 5 figures, 21 pages, submitted for Comets III

We present a summary of our project that studies galaxies hosting type Ia supernova (SN Ia) at different redshifts. We present Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC) optical spectroscopy of six SN Ia host galaxies at redshift $z\sim 0.4-0.5$. They are joined to a set of SN Ia host galaxies at intermediate-high redshift, which include galaxies from surveys SDSS and COSMOS. The final sample, after a selection of galaxy spectra in terms of signal-to-noise and other characteristics, consists of 680 galaxies with redshift in the range $0.04 < z < 1$. We perform an inverse stellar population synthesis with the code {\sc fado} to estimate the star formation and enrichment histories of this set of galaxies, simultaneously obtaining their mean stellar age and metallicity and stellar mass. After analysing the correlations among these characteristics, we look for possible dependencies of the Hubble diagram residuals and supernova features (luminosity, color and strength parameter) on these stellar parameters. We find that the Hubble residuals show a clear dependence on the stellar metallicity weighted by mass with a slope of -0.061\,mag\,dex$^{-1}$, when represented in logarithmic scale, $\log{ \langle Z_{M}/Z_{\odot}\rangle }$. This result supports our previous findings obtained from gas oxygen abundances for local and SDSS-survey galaxies. Comparing with other works from the literature that also use the stellar metallicity, we find a similar value, but with more precision and a better significance (2.08 vs $\sim$ 1.1), due to the higher number of objects and wider range of redshift of our sample., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

CO and CO$_2$ are the two dominant carbon-bearing molecules in comae and have major roles in driving activity. Their relative abundances also provide strong observational constraints to models of solar system formation and evolution but have never been studied together in a large sample of comets. We carefully compiled and analyzed published measurements of simultaneous CO and CO$_2$ production rates for 25 comets. Approximately half of the comae have substantially more CO$_2$ than CO, about a third are CO-dominated and about a tenth produce a comparable amount of both. There may be a heliocentric dependence to this ratio with CO dominating comae beyond 3.5 au. Eight out of nine of the Jupiter Family Comets in our study produce more CO$_2$ than CO. The six dynamically new comets produce more CO$_2$ relative to CO than the eight Oort Cloud comets that have made multiple passes through the inner solar system. This may be explained by long-term cosmic ray processing of a comet nucleus's outer layers. We find (Q$_{CO}$/Q$_{H_2O}$)$_{median}$ = 3 $\pm$ 1\% and (Q$_{CO_2}$/Q$_{H_2O}$)$_{median}$ = 12 $\pm$ 2\%. The inorganic volatile carbon budget was estimated to be Q$_{CO}$+Q$_{CO_2}$)/Q$_{H_2O}$ $\sim$ 18\% for most comets. Between 0.7 to 4.6 au, CO$_2$ outgassing appears to be more intimately tied to the water production in a way that the CO is not. The volatile carbon/oxygen ratio for 18 comets is C/O$_{median}$ $\sim$ 13\%, which is consistent with a comet formation environment that is well within the CO snow line.

Centaur 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1) is a highly active object orbiting in the transitional Gateway region (Sarid et al. 2019) between the Centaur and Jupiter Family Comet regions. SW1 is unique among the Centaurs in that it experiences quasi-regular major outbursts and produces CO emission continuously; however, the source of the CO is unclear. We argue that due to its very large size (approx. 32 km radius), SW1 is likely still responding, via amorphous water ice (AWI) conversion to crystalline water ice (CWI), to the rapid change in its external thermal environment produced by its dynamical migration from the Kuiper belt to the Gateway Region at the inner edge of the Centaur region at 6 au. It is this conversion process that is the source of the abundant CO and dust released from the object during its quiescent and outburst phases. If correct, these arguments have a number of important predictions testable via remote sensing and in situ spacecraft characterization, including: the quick release on Myr timescales of CO from AWI conversion for any few km-scale scattered disk KBO transiting into the inner system; that to date SW1 has only converted between 50 to 65% of its nuclear AWI to CWI; that volume changes upon AWI conversion could have caused subsidence and cave-ins, but not significant mass wasting or crater loss on SW1; that SW1s coma should contain abundant amounts of CWI CO2-rich icy dust particles; and that when SW1 transits into the inner system within the next 10,000 years, it will be a very different kind of JFC comet., Comment: 29 Pages, 3 Figures, 2 Tables, accepted 16-Sept-2022 by the Planetary Science Journal Corrected proof version 26-Oct-2022

We investigate the influence of microstructural traps in hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth. To this end, a new formulation combining multi-trap stress-assisted diffusion, mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity and a hydrogen- and fatigue-dependent cohesive zone model is presented and numerically implemented. The results show that the ratio of loading frequency to effective diffusivity governs fatigue crack growth behaviour. Increasing the density of \emph{beneficial} traps, not involved in the fracture process, results in lower fatigue crack growth rates. The combinations of loading frequency and carbide trap densities that minimise embrittlement susceptibility are identified, providing the foundation for a rational design of hydrogen-resistant alloys.

We present constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r using a combination of BICEP/Keck 2018 and Planck PR4 data allowing us to fit for r consistently with the six parameters of the $\Lambda$CDM model without fixing any of them. In particular, we are able to derive a constraint on the reionization optical depth $\tau$ and thus propagate its uncertainty onto the posterior distribution for r. While Planck sensitivity to r is no longer comparable with ground-based measurements, combining Planck with BK18 and BAO gives results consistent with r = 0 and tightens the constraint to r < 0.032., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, published in PRD

In this paper, we enriched Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) with interval outranking to develop a novel multiobjective ACO optimizer to approach problems with many objective functions. This proposal is suitable if the preferences of the Decision Maker (DM) can be modeled through outranking relations. The introduced algorithm (named Interval Outranking-based ACO, IO-ACO) is the first ant-colony optimizer that embeds an outranking model to bear vagueness and ill-definition of DM preferences. This capacity is the most differentiating feature of IO-ACO because this issue is highly relevant in practice. IO-ACO biases the search towards the Region of Interest (RoI), the privileged zone of the Pareto frontier containing the solutions that better match the DM preferences. Two widely studied benchmarks were utilized to measure the efficiency of IO-ACO, i.e., the DTLZ and WFG test suites. Accordingly, IO-ACO was compared with two competitive many-objective optimizers: The Indicator-based Many-Objective ACO and the Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm Based on Decomposition. We analyze the magnetic excitations and the spin-mediated superconductivity in iron-based superconductors within a low-energy model that operates in the band basis but fully incorporates the orbital character of the spin excitations. We show how the orbital selectivity, encoded in our low-energy description, simplifies substantially the analysis and allows for analytical treatments, while retaining all the main features of both spin-excitations and gap functions computed using multiorbital models. Importantly, our analysis unveils the orbital matching between the hole and electron pockets as the key parameter to determine the momentum-dependence and the hierarchy of the superconducting gaps, instead of the Fermi surface matching as in the common nesting scenario., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We present analyses of Spitzer observations of 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 using 16 $\mu$m IRS "blue" peak-up (PU) and 24 $\mu$m and 70 $\mu$m MIPS images obtained on UT 2003 November 23 and 24 that characterize the Centaur's large-grain (10-100 $\mu$m) dust coma during a time of non-outbursting "quiescent" activity. Estimates of $\epsilon f \rho$ for each band (16 $\mu$m (2600 $\pm$ 43 cm), 24 $\mu$m (5800 $\pm$ 63 cm), and 70 $\mu$m (1800 $\pm$ 900 cm)) follow the trend between nucleus size vs. $\epsilon f \rho$ that was observed for the WISE/NEOWISE comet ensemble. A coma model was used to derive a dust production rate in the range of 50-100 kg/s. For the first time, a color temperature map of SW1's coma was constructed using the 16 $\mu$m and 24 $\mu$m imaging data. With peaks at $\sim$ 140K, this map implies that coma water ice grains should be slowly sublimating and producing water gas in the coma. We analyzed the persistent 24 $\mu$m "wing" (a curved southwestern coma) feature at 352,000 km (90$''$) from the nucleus attributed by Stansberry et al. (2004) to nucleus rotation and instead propose that it is largely created by solar radiation pressure and gravity acting on micron sized grains. We performed coma removal to the 16 $\mu$m PU image in order to refine the nucleus' emitted thermal flux. A new application of the Near Earth Asteroid Thermal Model (NEATM; Harris 1998) at five wavelengths (5.730 $\mu$m, 7.873 $\mu$m, 15.80 $\mu$m, 23.68 $\mu$m, and 71.42 $\mu$m) was then used to refine SW1's effective radius measurement to $R = 32.3 \pm 3.1$ km and infrared beaming parameter to $\eta = 1.1 \pm 0.2$, respectively.

We observed Episodically Active Asteroid (6478) Gault in 2020 with multiple telescopes in Asia and North America and have found that it is no longer active after its recent outbursts at the end of 2018 and start of 2019. The inactivity during this apparation allowed us to measure the absolute magnitude of Gault of H_r = 14.63 +/- 0.02, G_r = 0.21 +/- 0.02 from our secular phasecurve observations. In addition, we were able to constrain Gault's rotation period using time-series photometric lightcurves taken over 17 hours on multiple days in 2020 August, September and October. The photometric lightcurves have a repeating $\lesssim$0.05 magnitude feature suggesting that (6478) Gault has a rotation period of ~2.5 hours and may have a semi-spherical or top-like shape, much like Near-Earth Asteroids Ryugu and Bennu. The rotation period of ~2.5 hours is near to the expected critical rotation period for an asteroid with the physical properties of (6478) Gault suggesting that its activity observed over multiple epochs is due to surface mass shedding from its fast rotation spun up by the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack effect., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures; Accepted by ApJ Letters

As an emerging technology, transcranial focused ultrasound has been demonstrated to successfully evoke motor responses in mice, rabbits, and sensory/motor responses in humans. Yet, the spatial resolution of ultrasound does not allow for high-precision stimulation. Here, we developed a tapered fiber optoacoustic emitter (TFOE) for optoacoustic stimulation of neurons with an unprecedented spatial resolution of 20 microns, enabling selective activation of single neurons or subcellular structures, such as axons and dendrites. A single acoustic pulse of 1 microsecond converted by the TFOE from a single laser pulse of 3 nanoseconds is shown as the shortest acoustic stimuli so far for successful neuron activation. The highly localized ultrasound generated by the TFOE made it possible to integrate the optoacoustic stimulation and highly stable patch clamp recording on single neurons. Direct measurements of electrical response of single neurons to acoustic stimulation, which is difficult for conventional ultrasound stimulation, have been demonstrated for the first time. By coupling TFOE with ex vivo brain slice electrophysiology, we unveil cell-type-specific response of excitatory and inhibitory neurons to acoustic stimulation. These results demonstrate that TFOE is a non-genetic single-cell and sub-cellular modulation technology, which could shed new insights into the mechanism of neurostimulation., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

We present visible and mid-infrared imagery and photometry of temporary Jovian co-orbital comet P/2019 LD$_2$ taken with HST/WFC3, Spitzer/IRAC, the GROWTH telescope network, visible spectroscopy from Keck/LRIS and archival ZTF observations taken between 2019 April and 2020 August. Our observations indicate that the nucleus of LD$_2$ has a radius between 0.2-1.8 km assuming a 0.08 albedo and a coma dominated by $\sim$100$\mu$ m-scale dust ejected at $\sim$1 m/s speeds with a $\sim$1'' jet pointing in the SW direction. LD$_2$ experienced a total dust mass loss of $\sim$10$^8$ kg at a loss rate of $\sim$6 kg/s with Af$\rho$/cross-section varying between $\sim$85 cm/125 km$^2$ and $\sim$200 cm/310 km$^2$ from 2019 April 9 to 2019 Nov 8. If the increase in Af$\rho$/cross-section remained constant, it implies LD$_2$'s activity began $\sim$2018 November when within 4.8 au of the Sun, implying the onset of H$_2$O sublimation. We measure CO/CO$_2$ gas production of $\lesssim$10$^{27}$ mol/s /$\lesssim$10$^{26}$ mol/s from our 4.5 $\mu$m Spitzer observations, $g$-$r$ = 0.59$\pm$0.03, $r$-$i$ = 0.18$\pm$0.05, $i$-$z$ = 0.01$\pm$0.07 from GROWTH observations, H$_2$O gas production of $\lesssim$80 kg/s scaling from our estimated $C_2$ production of $Q_{C_2}\lesssim$7.5$\times10^{24}$ mol/s from Keck/LRIS spectroscopy. We determine that the long-term orbit of LD$_2$ is similar to Jupiter family comets having close encounters with Jupiter within $\sim$0.5 Hill radius in the last $\sim$3 y, within 0.8 Hill radius in $\sim$9 y. Additionally, 78.8$\%$ of our orbital clones are ejected from the Solar System within $1 \times 10^{6}$ years having a dynamical half-life of 3.4 $\times 10^5$ years., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 2 Tables, accepted for publication in AJ
