Due to outstanding physicochemical properties, ceramics are key engineering materials in many industrial domains. The evaluation of the damage created in ceramics employed in radiative media is a challenging problem for electronic, space, and nuclear industries. In this latter field, ceramics can be used as immobilization forms for radioactive wastes, inert fuel matrices for actinide transmutation, cladding materials for gas-cooled fission reactors, and structural components for fusion reactors. Information on the radiation stability of nuclear materials may be obtained by simulating the different types of interactions involved during the slowing down of energetic particles with ion beams delivered by various types of accelerators. This paper presents a review of the radiation effects occurring in nuclear ceramics, with an emphasis on recent results concerning the damage accumulation processes. Energetic ions in the KeV-GeV range are used to explore the nuclear collision (at low energy) and electronic excitation (at high energy) regimes. The recovery by electronic excitation of the damage created by ballistic collisions (SHIBIEC process) is also addressed.

Strain engineering using ion beams is a current topic of research interest in semiconductor materials. Synchrotron-based high-resolution x-ray diffraction has been utilized for strain-depth analysis in GaAs irradiated with 300 keV Ar and 4H-SiC and GaAs irradiated with 100 MeV Ag ions. The direct displacement-related defect formation, anticipated from the elastic energy loss of Ar ions, can well explain the irradiation-induced strain depth profiles. The maximum strain in GaAs is evaluated to be 0.88% after Ar irradiation. The unique energy loss depth profile of 100 MeV Ag (swift heavy ions; SHIs) and resistance of pristine 4H-SiC and GaAs to form amorphous/highly disordered ion tracks by ionization energy loss of monatomic ions allow us to examine strain buildup due to the concentrated displacement damage by the elastic energy loss near the end of ion range (∼ 12 μ m). Interestingly, for the case of SHIs, the strain-depth evolution requires consideration of recovery by ionization energy loss component in addition to the elastic displacement damage. For GaAs, strain builds up throughout the ion range, and the maximum strain increases and then saturates at 0.37% above an ion fluence of 3 × 10 13 Ag/cm 2. For 4H-SiC, the maximum strain reaches 4.6% and then starts to recover for fluences above 1 × 10 13 Ag/cm 2. Finally, the contribution of irradiation defects and the purely mechanical contribution to the total strain have been considered to understand the response of different compounds to ion irradiation. Introduction In people with Parkinson’s (PwP) impaired mobility is associated with an increased falls risk. To improve mobility, dopaminergic medication is typically prescribed, but complex medication regimens result in suboptimal adherence. Exploring medication adherence and its impact on mobility in PwP will provide essential insights to optimise medication regimens and improve mobility. However, this is typically assessed in controlled environments, during one-off clinical assessments. Digital health technology (DHT) presents a means to overcome this, by continuously and remotely monitoring mobility and medication adherence. This study aims to use a novel DHT system (DHTS) (comprising of a smartphone, smartwatch and inertial measurement unit (IMU)) to assess self-reported medication adherence, and its impact on digital mobility outcomes (DMOs) in PwP.Methods and analysis This single-centre, UK-based study, will recruit 55 participants with Parkinson’s. Participants will complete a range of clinical, and physical assessments. Participants will interact with a DHTS over 7 days, to assess self-reported medication adherence, and monitor mobility and contextual factors in the real world. Participants will complete a motor complications diary (ON-OFF-Dyskinesia) throughout the monitoring period and, at the end, a questionnaire and series of open-text questions to evaluate DHTS usability. Feasibility of the DHTS and the motor complications diary will be assessed. Validated algorithms will quantify DMOs from IMU walking activity. Time series modelling and deep learning techniques will model and predict DMO response to medication and effects of contextual factors. This study will provide essential insights into medication adherence and its effect on real-world mobility in PwP, providing insights to optimise medication regimens.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was granted by London—142 Westminster Research Ethics Committee (REC: 21/PR/0469), protocol V.2.4. The concept of a safe geological disposal facility designed to manage radioactive waste is on the basis of the multibarrier system comprising both the host rock and various engineered barriers. The robustness of the latter depends directly on the building materials used. With specific regard to high‐level waste, Andra's Cigéo project includes, among others, two barriers, i.e., the disposal container and the microtunnel liner. A scenario was built and shows that safety requirements are satisfied using of low carbon steel for these two components. However, to further increase safety margins and simplify the operation of the facility, Andra decided to study other materials less prone to corrosion. Consequently, Andra launched an R&D program to assess the technical feasibility of a high‐level waste container and a microtunnel liner made from ceramics, with the technical characteristics needed to meet safety requirements. IntroductionParkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder which requires complex medication regimens to mitigate motor symptoms. The use of digital health technology systems (DHTSs) to collect mobility and medication data provides an opportunity to objectively quantify the effect of medication on motor performance during day-to-day activities. This insight could inform clinical decision-making, personalise care, and aid self-management. This study investigates the feasibility and usability of a multi-component DHTS to remotely assess self-reported medication adherence and monitor mobility in people with Parkinson's (PwP).MethodsThirty participants with PD [Hoehn and Yahr stage I (n = 1) and II (n = 29)] were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Participants were required to wear, and where appropriate, interact with a DHTS (smartwatch, inertial measurement unit, and smartphone) for seven consecutive days to assess medication adherence and monitor digital mobility outcomes and contextual factors. Participants reported their daily motor complications [motor fluctuations and dyskinesias (i.e., involuntary movements)] in a diary. Following the monitoring period, participants completed a questionnaire to gauge the usability of the DHTS. Feasibility was assessed through the percentage of data collected, and usability through analysis of qualitative questionnaire feedback.ResultsAdherence to each device exceeded 70% and ranged from 73 to 97%. Overall, the DHTS was well tolerated with 17/30 participants giving a score > 75% [average score for these participants = 89%, from 0 (worst) to 100 (best)] for its usability. Usability of the DHTS was significantly associated with age (ρ = −0.560, BCa 95% CI [−0.791, −0.207]). This study identified means to improve usability of the DHTS by addressing technical and design issues of the smartwatch. Feasibility, usability and acceptability were identified as key themes from PwP qualitative feedback on the DHTS.ConclusionThis study highlighted the feasibility and usability of our integrated DHTS to remotely assess medication adherence and monitor mobility in people with mild-to-moderate Parkinson's disease. Further work is necessary to determine whether this DHTS can be implemented for clinical decision-making to optimise management of PwP.

Simple Summary: In this national study, we found a low rate of 12% benign pathology after partial nephrectomy in the Netherlands. This raises the questions of whether we should aim to further reduce the rate of benign pathology, what rate is considered acceptable, and whether the more frequent use of renal tumor biopsies can contribute to this. We recommend that patients with clinical suspicion for renal cancer are discussed in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings to determine whether a biopsy could be of added value to avoid overtreatment. Objectives: To determine the rate of benign pathology in cT1 tumors following partial nephrectomy in the Netherlands, thereby evaluating the rate of overtreatment. Methods: Data were collected from a nationwide database containing histopathology of resected renal tissue from 2014 to 2022. Patients who underwent partial nephrectomy for suspected RCC staged T1a-b were extracted for analysis. Data are shown in percentages, and multivariable logistic regression was performed to determine predictive factors for benign pathology. Results: 3409 cases were analyzed, of which 403 (12%) were benign and 3006 (88%) malignant. Subtype analysis showed 2126 (62%) cases of clear-cell RCC, followed by 604 (18%) of papillary RCC and 344 (10%) oncocytomas. Mean age was 63 years among patients with malignant pathology versus 65 years for patients with benign lesions (p < 0.001). Mean tumor size was 3.2 cm for malignant pathology and 2.9 cm for benign (p < 0.001). The rates of benign and malignant pathology did not change between 2014 and 2022 (p = 0.377). Multivariable regression showed age ≥ 65 years (65–79 years [OR 1.881, p = 0.002], ≥ 80 years [OR 3.642, p < 0.001]) and tumor size (OR 0.793, p < 0.001) as predictors for benign pathology. The main limitation of this study is that we do not know the biopsy rate of our cohort. Conclusion: This study reports a low rate of 12% benign pathology after partial nephrectomy in the Netherlands. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) constitutes a major public health problem, and despite prevention efforts, this pandemic disease is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. In 2022, 6.7 million patients with T2D died prematurely from vascular complications. Indeed, diabetes increases the risk of myocardial infarction or stroke eightfold. The identification of the molecular factors involved in the occurrence of cardiovascular complications and their prevention are therefore major axes. Our hypothesis is that factors brought into play during physiological aging appear prematurely with diabetes progression. Our study focused on the aging of the extracellular matrix (ECM), a major element in the maintenance of vascular homeostasis. We characterized the morphological and functional aspects of aorta, with a focus on the collagen and elastic fibers of diabetic mice aged from 6 mo to nondiabetic mice aged 6 mo and 20 mo. The comparison with the two nondiabetic models (young and old) highlighted an exacerbated activity of proteases, which could explain a disturbance in the collagen accumulation and an excessive degradation of elastic fibers. Moreover, the generation of circulating elastin-derived peptides reflects premature aging of the ECM. These extracellular elements contribute to the appearance of vascular rigidity, often the origin of pathologies such as hypertension and atherosclerosis. In conclusion, we show that diabetic mice aged 6 mo present the same characteristics of ECM wear as those observed in mice aged 20 mo. This accelerated aortic wall remodeling could then explain the early onset of cardiovascular diseases and, therefore, the premature death of patients with T2D. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Aortic elastic fibers of young (6-mo old) individuals with diabetes degrade prematurely and exhibit an appearance like that found in aged (20-mo old) nondiabetic mice. Exacerbated elastolysis and elastin-derived peptide production are characteristic elements, contributing to early aortic wall rigidity and hypertension development. Therefore, limiting this early aging could be a judicious therapeutic approach to reduce cardiovascular complications and premature death in patients with diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This piece aims to provide critical distance to the notion of the commons, increasingly used in academia to depict social movements. Squatting shows particularly useful to expose the blind spots of neo-institutionalist approaches but also confronts the unitary and homogenizing Marxist "urban commons" narratives. A circumstantial history of squatting in Barcelona is provided to contextualize the internal conflict examined in this paper. Then, an introduction to the case study, Espai Social Magdalenes (ESM), is provided. ESM was the stage of an intense conflict opposing different sectors of Barcelona's squatters' movement. I use interviews made with activists close to the squatter's movement to reinforce the theoretical claims of this piece with their assessments. Arguably, untamed and open conflict is at the heart of squatting, leading to movements that are far from the pacified and orderly framework of a significant part of the commons literature.

In the French-speaking part of Belgium, between march and end of may 2020, 284 patients have suffered a Covid-19 infection, 7,9% of the prevalent dialysis population. Some of them have been diagnosed through rt-PCT as they were symptomatic, others, asymptomatic, being diagnosed by swab viral culture. Fifty two patients died (18% of the positive patients). The vast majority of them were patients on hemodialysis, only ten cases have been observed in patients on home dialysis techniques. Primary renal disease were diabetes or renal hypertensive disease in more than 50% of the patients and the most important comorbidities were cardiac ischemic or congestive disease, autonomy problems, cancer and smoking habits.
