Abstract Background Cell cycle arrest biomarkers (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase‐2 [uTIMP‐2] and insulin‐like growth factor binding protein 7 [uIGFBP7]), and neutrophil gelatinase‐associated lipocalin (NGAL) variables are valuable biomarkers for early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) in people. Objectives To evaluate uTIMP‐2, uIGFBP7, fractional excretion of NGAL (FeNGAL), and urinary to serum NGAL ratio (u/sNGAL) in healthy dogs, dogs with AKI, dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and critically ill (CI) dogs. Animals Forty‐two client‐owned dogs (healthy, n = 10; AKI, n = 11; CKD, n = 11; CI, n = 10). Methods Prospective, observational study. After assessment of routine renal biomarkers, stress (uTIMP‐2, uIGFBP7) and damage (NGAL) biomarkers were measured, using ELISA kits, and normalized to urinary creatinine (uCr). Results Normalized uTIMP‐2 and [uTIMP‐2] × [uIGFBP7]/uCr were significantly higher in the AKI group (median 151.9 [range, 2.2‐534.2] and 62.9 [1.1‐266.8] pg/mL respectively), compared to healthy dogs (0.3 [0.2‐74.7]; P

IntroductionMal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is a debilitating neuro-otological disorder. Patients experience almost continuously a perception of self-motion. This syndrome can be motion-triggered (MT-MdDS), such as on a boat, or occur spontaneously or have other triggers (SO-MdDS) in the absence of such motion. Because the pathophysiological mechanism is unknown, treatment options and symptom management strategies are limited. One available treatment protocol involves a readaptation of the vestibular ocular reflex (VOR). This study assesses the effectiveness of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) readaptation in 131 consecutive patients with a fixed protocol.MethodsWe administered 131 treatments involving optokinetic stimulation (OKS) paired with a fixed head roll at 0.167 Hz over two to five consecutive days. Each day, four-minute treatment blocks were scheduled twice in the morning and afternoon. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated through questionnaires and posturography.ResultsWe observed significant improvements in the visual analog scale (VAS), MdDS symptom questionnaire, and posturography measures from pre- to post-treatment. No significant differences were found in outcome variables between MT- and SO-MdDS onsets.ConclusionSymptoms improved subjectively and objectively in patients’ post-treatment. The overall success rate was 64.1%, with no significant difference between MT (64.2%) and SO (63.3%). This study supports the conclusion that VOR readaptation treatment provides relief for two-thirds of MdDS patients, irrespective of the onset type. Based on consistency in the findings, we propose a standardized method for treatment of MdDS based on the OKS with head roll paradigm.

To contribute to cracking the theoretical AI in education code, interviews with academic advisors at a European university were analysed using a dialogic-relational translation device to develop a sociomaterial framework for building EdTech and AIEd theory. The four personas (Consultant, Coach, Counsellor, Collaborator) emerging from the data analysis represent the mental models of academic advisors regarding using technology in their practice. These personas could be used to understand the underlying dynamic of the academic advising practice, for developing personalised training, or to design future human-centred AI-infused academic advising systems. The dialogic-relational framework could also be adapted to create translation devices to analyse and build EdTech and AIEd theory regarding other educational teaching-learning-assessment practices.

Abstract Concrete, a widely used building material, often suffers from cracks that lead to corrosion and degradation. A promising solution to enhance its durability is the use of fungi as self‐healing agents, specifically by harnessing their ability to promote calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation on their cell walls. However, the ideal conditions for CaCO3 precipitation by the filamentous fungal species Trichoderma reesei are still unclear. In this study, the biomineralization properties of T. reesei in liquid media are investigated. Two different calcium sources, calcium chloride (CaCl2) and calcium lactate are tested, at varying concentrations and in the presence of different nutritional sources that support growth of T. reesei. This study also explores the effects on fungal growth upon adding cement to the medium. Calcium lactate promotes greater fungal biomass production, although less crystals are formed as compared to samples with CaCl2. An increasing calcium concentration positively influences fungal growth and precipitation, but this effect is hindered upon the addition of cement. The highest amounts of biomass and calcium carbonate precipitation are achieved with potato dextrose broth as a nutritional source. By identifying the optimal conditions for CaCO3 precipitation by T. reesei, this study highlights its potential as a self‐healing agent in concrete.

IntroductionIn a previous manuscript from our research group, the concept of vestibular co-stimulation was investigated in adult subjects who received a cochlear implant (CI). Despite what literature reports state, no signs of vestibular co-stimulation could be observed.ResultsIn this case report, it was described how a woman, who previously underwent a neurectomy of the left vestibular nerve and suffers from bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP), reported improved balance whenever her CI on the left was stimulating. Unexpectedly, the sway analyses during posturography indeed showed a clinically relevant improvement when the CI was activated.DiscussionVestibular co-stimulation as a side effect of CI stimulation could not be the explanation in this case due to the ipsilateral vestibular neurectomy. It is more likely that the results can be attributed to the electrically restored auditory input, which serves as an external reference for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. In addition, this patient experienced disturbing tinnitus whenever her CI was deactivated. It is thus plausible that the tinnitus increased her cognitive load, which was already increased because of the BVP, leading to an increased imbalance in the absence of CI stimulation.

Abstract Sleep problems in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) emerge early in development, yet the origin remains unclear. Here, we characterise developmental trajectories in sleep onset latency (SOL) and night awakenings in infants at elevated likelihood (EL) for ASD (who have an older sibling with ASD) and infants at typical likelihood (TL) for ASD. Further, we test whether the ability to gate tactile input, using an EEG tactile suppression index (TSI), associates with variation in SOL and night awakenings. Parent-reported night awakenings and SOL from 124 infants (97 at EL for ASD) at 5, 10 and 14 months were analyzed using generalized estimating equations. Compared to TL infants, infants at EL had significantly more awakenings and longer SOL at 10 and 14 months. The TSI predicted SOL concurrently at 10 months, independent of ASD likelihood status, but not longitudinally at 14 months. The TSI did not predict night awakenings concurrently or longitudinally. These results imply that infants at EL for ASD wake up more frequently during the night and take longer to fall asleep from 10 months of age. At 10 months, sensory gating predicts SOL, but not night awakenings, suggesting sensory gating differentially affects neural mechanisms of sleep initiation and maintenance.

Abstract Recessive mutations in the SLC13A5 gene encoding the sodium‐dependent citrate transporter are a recently identified cause of developmental and epileptic encephalopathy. Here, we describe a child harboring a novel homozygous loss‐of‐function mutation in the SLC13A5 gene (c.1496C>T–p.Ser499Phe) and exhibiting an unusual extremely severe neonatal presentation with drug‐resistant seizures and burst‐suppression EEG pattern. Early carbamazepine use resulted in dramatic improvement both clinically and on EEG features. Follow‐up from the neonatal period to the age of 4 years is documented. This case expands the electro‐clinical phenotype associated with SLC13A5‐related disease and confirms the efficacy and safety of carbamazepine in nonstructural early‐onset epilepsies.

Abstract Sialidosis is a rare autosomal‐recessive lysosomal storage disease due to mutations in the NEU1 gene leading to a deficit of alpha‐n‐acetyl neuraminidase and causing aberrant accumulation of sialylated glycoproteins/peptides and oligosaccharides in the lysosomes of various organs and tissues. Type II sialidosis (dysmorphic form) is classified into three subgroups based on the age of onset and the clinical severity: Congenital or neonatal, infantile (onset 0–12 months) and juvenile form (onset 13 months–20 years). We report the case of a 3‐year‐old boy with sialidosis type II infantile form, who developed a voluminous ascites. To the best of our knowledge, ascites is not described in the infantile form but in the congenital form of the disease. Ascites seems to be of a multifactorial origin regarding our investigations: on the one hand, portal hypertension and on the other hypoalbuminemia maintained by proteinuria secondary to nephrosialidosis. Loss of plasma proteins in the gastrointestinal tract (protein‐losing enteropathy) should also be considered in the case of portal hypertension and damages of the reticuloendothelial system.

Abstract Otoliths are the primary gravity sensors of the vestibular system and are responsible for the ocular counter-roll (OCR). This compensatory eye torsion ensures gaze stabilization and is sensitive to a head roll with respect to gravity and the Gravito-Inertial Acceleration vector during, e.g., centrifugation. To measure the effect of prolonged spaceflight on the otoliths, we quantified the OCR induced by off-axis centrifugation in a group of 27 cosmonauts in an upright position before and after their 6-month space mission to the International Space Station. We observed a significant decrease in OCR early postflight, larger for first-time compared to experienced flyers. We also found a significantly larger torsion for the inner eye, the eye closest to the rotation axis. Our results suggest that experienced cosmonauts have acquired the ability to adapt faster after G-transitions. These data provide a scientific basis for sending experienced cosmonauts on challenging missions that include multiple g-level transitions.
