In this paper, we propose a variational formulation with the use of high order impedance boundary condition (HOIBC) to solve the scattering problem. We study the existence and uniqueness of the solution. Then, a discretization of this formulation is done with Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG). Monolayer WSe$_2$ hosts bright single-photon emitters. Because of its compliance, monolayer WSe$_2$ conforms to patterned substrates without breaking, thus creating the potential for large local strain, which is one activation mechanism of its intrinsic quantum emitters. Here, we report an approach to creating spatially and spectrally isolated quantum emitters from WSe$_2$ monolayers with few or no detrimental sources of emission. We show that a bilayer of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and WSe$_2$ placed on a nanostructured substrate can be used to create and shape wrinkles that communicate local strain to the WSe$_2$, thus creating quantum emitters that are isolated from substrate features. We compare quantum emitters created directly on top of substrate features with quantum emitters forming along wrinkles and find that the spectra of the latter consist of mainly a single peak and a low background fluorescence. Diamond-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) enable direct coupling between the quantum states of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers and the phonon modes of a mechanical resonator. One example, diamond high-overtone bulk acoustic resonators (HBARs), feature an integrated piezoelectric transducer and support high-quality factor resonance modes into the GHz frequency range. The acoustic modes allow mechanical manipulation of deeply embedded NV centers with long spin and orbital coherence times. Unfortunately, the spin-phonon coupling rate is limited by the large resonator size, $>100~\mu$m, and thus strongly-coupled NV electron-phonon interactions remain out of reach in current diamond BAR devices. Here, we report the design and fabrication of a semi-confocal HBAR (SCHBAR) device on diamond (silicon carbide) with $f\cdot Q>10^{12}$($>10^{13}$). The semi-confocal geometry confines the phonon mode laterally below 10~$\mu$m. This drastic reduction in modal volume enhances defect center electron-phonon coupling. For the native NV centers inside the diamond device, we demonstrate mechanically driven spin transitions and show a high strain-driving efficiency with a Rabi frequency of $(2\pi)2.19(14)$~MHz/V$_{p}$, which is comparable to a typical microwave antenna at the same microwave power., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures including supporting information

We consider an inverse boundary value problem for the Maxwell's equations with a given data assumed to be known only in accessible part $\Gamma$ of the boundary. We aim to prove an uniqueness result using the Dirichlet to Neumann map with measurements limited to an open part of the boundary and we seek to reconstruct the complex refractive index $\emph{\textbf{n}}$ in the interior of a bounded domain Further, using the impedance map restricted to $\Gamma$, we may identify locations of small volume fraction perturbations of the refractive index., Comment: 16 pages

We demonstrate a high-purity source of indistinguishable single photons using a quantum dot embedded in a nanophotonic waveguide. The source features a near-unity internal coupling efficiency and the collected photons are efficiently coupled off-chip by implementing a taper that adiabatically couples the photons to an optical fiber. By quasi-resonant excitation of the quantum dot, we measure a single-photon purity larger than 99.4% and a photon indistinguishability of up to 94+-1% by using p-shell excitation combined with spectral filtering to reduce photon jitter. A temperature-dependent study allows pinpointing the residual decoherence processes notably the effect of phonon broadening. Strict resonant excitation is implemented as well as another mean of suppressing photon jitter, and the additional complexity of suppressing the excitation laser source is addressed. The study opens a clear pathway towards the long-standing goal of a fully deterministic source of indistinguishable photons, which is integrated on a planar photonic chip., Comment: 12 pages (10 figures)

Many photonic quantum information processing applications would benefit from a high brightness, fiber-coupled source of triggered single photons. Here, we present a fiber-coupled photonic-crystal waveguide single-photon source relying on evanescent coupling of the light field from a tapered out-coupler to an optical fiber. A two-step approach is taken where the performance of the tapered out-coupler is recorded first on an independent device containing an on-chip reflector. Reflection measurements establish that the chip-to-fiber coupling efficiency exceeds 80 %. The detailed characterization of a high-efficiency photonic-crystal waveguide extended with a tapered out-coupling section is then performed. The corresponding overall single-photon source efficiency is 10.9 % $\pm$ 2.3 %, which quantifies the success probability to prepare an exciton in the quantum dot, couple it out as a photon in the waveguide, and subsequently transfer it to the fiber. The applied out-coupling method is robust, stable over time, and broadband over several tens of nanometers, which makes it a highly promising pathway to increase the efficiency and reliability of planar chip-based single-photon sources., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells have long radiative lifetimes and form a cold quasi-two-dimensional population suitable for studying collective quantum effects. Here we report the observation of the exciton Mott transition from an insulating (excitons) to a conducting (ionized electron-hole pairs) phase, which occurs gradually as a function of carrier density and temperature. The transition is inferred from spectral and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements around a carrier density of $2\times10^{10} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ and temperatures of $12-16 \mathrm{K}$. An externally applied electric field is employed to tune the dynamics of the transition via the quantum-confined Stark effect. Refrigeration of a solid-state system with light has potential applications for cooling small-scale electronics and photonics. We show theoretically that two coupled semiconductor quantum wells are efficient cooling media for optical refrigeration because they support long-lived indirect electron-hole pairs. Thermal excitation of these pairs to distinct higher-energy states with faster radiative recombination allows an efficient escape channel to remove thermal energy from the system. This allows reaching much higher cooling efficiencies than with single quantum wells. From band-diagram calculations along with an experimentally realistic level scheme we calculate the cooling efficiency and cooling yield of different devices with coupled quantum wells embedded in a suspended nanomembrane. The dimension and composition of the quantum wells allow optimizing either of these quantities, which cannot, however, be maximized simultaneously. Quantum-well structures with electrical control allow tunability of carrier lifetimes and energy levels so that the cooling efficiency can be optimized over time as the thermal population decreases due to the cooling., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We report on the observation of single-photon superradiance from an exciton in a semiconductor quantum dot. The confinement by the quantum dot is strong enough for it to mimic a two-level atom, yet sufficiently weak to ensure superradiance. The electrostatic interaction between the electron and the hole comprising the exciton gives rise to an anharmonic spectrum, which we exploit to prepare the superradiant quantum state deterministically with a laser pulse. We observe a five-fold enhancement of the oscillator strength compared to conventional quantum dots. The enhancement is limited by the base temperature of our cryostat and may lead to oscillator strengths above 1000 from a single quantum emitter at optical frequencies., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

This work concerns with the discontinuous Galerkin (DG)method for the time-dependent linear elasticity problem. We derive the a posteriori error bounds for semi-discrete and fully discrete problems, by making use of the stationary elasticity reconstruction technique which allows to estimate the error for time-dependent problem through the error estimation of the associated stationary elasticity problem. To this end, to derive the error bound for the stationary problem, we present two methods to obtain two different a posteriori error bounds, by $L^2$ duality technique and via energy norm. For fully discrete scheme, we make use of the backward-Euler scheme and an appropriate space-time reconstruction. We investigate the optical emission and decay dynamics of excitons confined in large strain-free GaAs quantum dots grown by droplet epitaxy. From time-resolved measurements combined with a theoretical model we show that droplet-epitaxy quantum dots have a quantum efficiency of about 75% and an oscillator strength between 8 and 10. The quantum dots are found to be fully described by a model for strongly-confined excitons, in contrast to the theoretical prediction that excitons in large quantum dots exhibit the so-called giant oscillator strength. We attribute these findings to localized ground-state excitons in potential minima created by material intermixing during growth. We provide further evidence for the strong-confinement regime of excitons by extracting the size of electron and hole wavefunctions from the phonon-broadened photoluminescence spectra. Furthermore, we explore the temperature dependence of the decay dynamics and, for some quantum dots, observe a pronounced reduction in the effective transition strength with temperature. We quantify and explain these effects as being an intrinsic property of large quantum dots owing to thermal excitation of the ground-state exciton. In this paper we consider the resolvent Stokes problem in the case there is a small perturbation of the domain caused by a perturbed boundary. Firstly, we prove that the solution of Stokes problem is continuous due to this small perturbation. Secondly, we derive the first-order term in the displacement field perturbation that due to the deformation of the domain. It is worth emphasizing that even though only the first-order term is given, our method enables us to derive higher-order terms as well. This paper is devoted to the identification of the unknown smooth coefficient c entering the hyperbolic equation $c(x)\partial_{t}^{2}u - \Delta u = 0$ in a bounded smooth domain in $\R^{d}$ from partial (on part of the boundary) dynamic boundary measurements. In this paper we prove that the knowledge of the partial Cauchy data for this class of hyperbolic PDE on any open subset $\Gamma$ of the boundary determines explicitly the coefficient $c$ provided that $c$ is known outside a bounded domain. Then, through construction of appropriate test functions by a geometrical control method, we derive a formula for calculating the coefficient $c$ from the knowledge of the difference between the local Dirichlet to Neumann maps.
