The project on the inclusion and education of Muslim minority children is a twenty-year multimodal educational intervention that aims to fight school failure and promote social inclusion. The project in question comprises activities that belong to both formal and nonformal education. This article concentrates on those activities conducted outside the formal classroom. Set within the cross-fertilization of practice-invested theory with theoretically oriented practice, we focus on out-of-school second language acquisition, teaching Greek as a second language to learners up to the age of twelve, compensatory classes for secondary school students, and adult literacy, all framed within the concepts of community learning and of literacies as multiple and varied, relative to sociocultural context. © Common Ground, Thalia Dragonas, Chara Dafermou, Maria Zografaki, Irini Assimakopoulou, Anastasia Dimitriou, Olga Katsiani, Victoria Lagopoulou.

Μέσω της AMELib ένα χρήστης του Δικτύου μπορεί να αναζητήσει στον δημόσιο συλλογικό κατάλογο τη διαθέσιμη βιβλιογραφία και να την μεταφορτώσει στον προσωπικό του υπολογιστή, βάση της κείμενης νομοθεσίας που προβλέπει εξαίρεση στο περιουσιακό δικαίωμα του δημιουργού προκειμένου να εξυπηρετηθούν εντυπο-ανάπηρα άτομα. Συντάχθηκαν οδηγίες για την δημιουργία προσβάσιμων ηλεκτρονικών βιβλίων ακολουθώντας διεθνή πρότυπα. Στην περιγραφή υλοποιήθηκε σημασιολογικό πρότυπο μεταδεδομένων, συγκεκριμένα το FRBR, ως τη μόνη επιλογή που θα μπορούσε να υπηρετήσει την πολλαπλότητα των μορφότυπων των προσβάσιμων τεκμηρίων και τις τεχνικές αναζήτησης μέσω αναγνώστη οθόνης. Υπηρετήθηκε με επιμονή πολιτική συνεργασίας μεταξύ των διαθετών προσβάσιμης βιβλιογραφίας αλλά και παρεμβάσεων με τεκμηριωμένες προτάσεις προκειμένου να αντιμετωπιστούν ζητήματα σε σχέση με τα δικαιώματα των ΑμεΑ, την εκπαίδευση των εργαζομένων του Συνεργατικού Δικτύου, τη νομοθεσία περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας, τους εκδοτικούς οίκους, την εθνική πολιτική για την εντυπο-αναπηρία. Η ψηφιακή βιβλιοθήκη AMELib είναι ένα πρώτο βήμα για την παροχή ολοκληρωμένων και συμπεριληπτικών υπηρεσιών στην κοινότητα. Με βλέμμα στραμμένο στις διεθνείς συνεργασίες με αντίστοιχες πρωτοβουλίες σε Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Ιταλία, Κύπρο και αλλού για τον πολλαπλασιασμό των παροχών προς τους χρήστες αλλά και την ανταλλαγή εμπειριών και βέλτιστων πρακτικών σε ζητήματα προσβασιμότητας. Με στόχο την ενσωμάτωση στην ελληνική νομοθεσία της Διεθνούς Συνθήκης του Μαρακές, βασικό εργαλείο για την απρόσκοπτη ανάπτυξη προσβάσιμων συλλογών. Η επόμενη μέρα βλέπει την κοινότητα διευρυμένη, την εμπλοκή της άμεση, την κουλτούρα εργασίας ριζικά διαφοροποιημένη ώστε καμία υπηρεσία στο πλαίσιο των ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών να μην είναι μη προσβάσιμη σε όλους και όλες.

Περιέχει τη περίληψη Η αναπηρία δεν αποτελεί μόνο ένα εκ γενετής ή επίκτητο φυσικό περιορισμό. Είναι, σύμφωνα με το Οργανισμό Ηνωμένων Εθνών, κυρίως, μια κοινωνική συνθήκη ανάμεσα στο άτομο και το περιβάλλον του. Για να ακυρωθεί στην πράξη η διάκριση της αναπηρίας, απαιτείται ένα περιβάλλον ικανό να άρει τα όποια εμπόδια. Προς την κατεύθυνση αυτή η ανάπτυξη νέων τεχνολογικών εφαρμογών μπορεί να ενισχύσει τις απαιτούμενες υποστηρικτικές υπηρεσίες. Η ανάπτυξη της AMELib (Accessible Multi-modal Electronic Library) στο πλαίσιο της δράσης 9.7 του ΣΕΑΒ, στοχεύει στην ενίσχυση της προσπάθειας άρσης των εμποδίων για τους εντυπο-ανάπηρους χρήστες των ελληνικών ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών. Ο στόχος εξειδικεύεται στην προσφορά προσβάσιμου περιεχομένου μέσα από μία εξίσου προσβάσιμη διαδικτυακή εφαρμογή, η οποία στηρίζεται στην εφαρμογή διατάξεων εξαίρεσης από το περιουσιακό δικαίωμα του δημιουργού για εντυπο-ανάπηρα άτομα, όπως αυτές προβλέπονται στη νομοθεσία για την πνευματική ιδιοκτησία. Για την επίτευξη του αναγκαίου συντονισμού των διαθετών προσβάσιμης βιβλιογραφίας κρίθηκε απαραίτητη η δημιουργία Συνεργατικού Δικτύου. Στόχος του Δικτύου είναι η υιοθέτηση κοινών προτύπων και διαδικασιών, η κοινή χρήση πόρων, και η ανάπτυξη πολιτικών συμπεριληπτικής εκπαίδευσης. Στην εισήγηση παρουσιάζονται οι ενέργειες της ομάδας της δράσης 9.7 σχετικά με τη διεύρυνση του νομοθετικού πλαισίου προκειμένου να εναρμονιστεί με την αντίστοιχη ευρωπαϊκή οδηγία. Παρουσιάζονται, επίσης, οι διαδικασίες συγκρότησης του συνεργατικού σχήματος. Γίνεται αναφορά στην ανάπτυξη οδηγιών για τη μετατροπή τεκμηρίων σε προσβάσιμους μορφότυπους καθώς και την υλοποίηση προφίλ του Dublin Core προκειμένου να περιγραφούν τα ψηφιακά αντικείμενα της AMELib.

Among a multitude of teacher-related issues, teacher education is one of ever growing importance. In this paper we present the results of the first part of an ongoing research project on teacher education, taking place at the University of Athens. We focus on the first stage of the Practicum (observing, analysing and understanding the context of educational action), considering it important for the students to be introduced to reflective approach of the educational practice. In order to illuminate the context of the research, we present the status of teacher education in Greece, and the stages and content of student teachers' education in the Faculty of Early Childhood Education in the University of Athens, particularly the way their Practicum is organised. In this paper, we present the first part of a study, in which we investigate our students' expectations at every stage of their Practicum and their perception and evaluation of their initial contact with the Kindergarten classroom. It has been affirmed that observational studies give analogous results to randomised controlled ones.A multicentre observational trial was conducted between 1996-1998 in order to evaluate the efficacy of palliative radionuclide therapy for bone metastases in a large number of patients. An evaluation was made on 510 patients with prostate cancer and painful bone metastases, treated with a single iv. dose of 89Sr-chloride (527 treatments) or 186Re-HEDP (83 treatments), in 29 Italian Nuclear Medicine Departments. Eighty-one patients received up to five injections, totalling 100 retreatments. Patients were followed up for a period of 3 months-2 years. Results were expressed at four levels of response: excellent, good, mild, and nil.Responses were excellent in 26.4%, good in 33.3%, mild in 21.3% and nil in 19% of all treatments, while good and excellent responses were obtained in 48% of retreatments. No statistically significant correlations were found between response and age of patients, skeletal extension of tumour, pretherapeutic PSA levels, evidence of non-bony metastases, previous chemotherapy and/or external-beam radiotherapy; osteolytic lesions responded worse than osteoblastic or mixed ones. Hematological toxicity (mild to moderate), mainly affecting platelets, was observed in 25.5% of all treatments and in 38.9% of retreatments. No clear differences were found between the two radiopharmaceuticals employed.Bearing in mind that observational studies can provide just as accurate results as randomised controlled trials, this study confirms the main findings of various limited monocentre trials.

A multicentre observational study was conducted by the Italian Association of Nuclear Medicine between 1996 and 1998. Twenty-nine Nuclear Medicine Departments participated. The aims of the study were to systematically evaluate the efficacy, toxicity and repeatability of radionuclide therapy of painful bone metastases (RTBM) in a large number of patients and to assess its incidence in patients with prostate cancer. Out of 818 treatments performed with a single i.v. dose of 148 MBq of strontium-89 chloride or 1,295 MBq of rhenium-186 hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate (HEDP), 610 could be evaluated (527 with 89Sr and 83 with 186Re-HEDP). Eighty-one patients received multiple (up to five) RTBM. The total number of retreatments was 100. Patients were followed up for a period of 3-24 months. Results, assessed according to pain relief and consumption of analgesic drugs, were expressed at four levels: 1, no response; 2, mild response; 3, good response; 4, excellent response. Responses were: level 1 in 19%, level 2 in 21.3%, level 3 in 33.3% and level 4 in 26.4% of cases. Retreatments showed significantly (P0.01) worse responses (48% levels 3+4), in comparison to first RTBM. Duration of palliation was 5.0+/-3.5 months, and was longer in cases of excellent response, in first RTBM, in patients with limited metastases and when 89Sr was used. Better responses were found in cases of limited skeletal disease, under good clinical conditions, when life expectancy exceeded 3 months, and in radiologically osteoblastic or mixed bone lesions. The only statistically significant predictive factor was life expectancy (P0.001). Flare phenomenon (14.1% of cases) did not correlate with the response. Haematological toxicity (mild to moderate in most cases) mainly affected platelets, and was observed in 25.5% of cases overall and in 38.9% of retreatments. RTBM did not seem to prolong life, though in some cases scintigraphic regression of bone metastases was observed. The two radiopharmaceuticals did not show any statistically significant differences in palliative efficacy and toxicity, either in first RTBM or in retreatments.

In order to clarify the possible connection between autosomal folate sensitive Fragile Sites (FS) and genetic susceptibility to haemopoetic disease in children we investigated the frequency and distribution of FS in the Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes (PBL) of 56 children with newly diagnosed and untreated haematologic malignancies and their parents. The incidence was compared with that of 146 normal controls (children and adults). In all patients the Bone Marrow (BM) karyotype was also determined. Heritable FS were detected in 49 patients (87.5%). 20 children had more than one FS and in all cases it was inherited from one of their parents, although there was a significant excess of transmitting mothers. 19 different FS were identified: 14 common, 4 rare and one, 22q11, which has not been previously reported, but it is considered as important as it coincides with the cancer breakpoint resulting in the formation of the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome. The frequency of FS in the PBL of the patients was significantly higher than in the controls and this increase was independent of any abnormality detected in the malignant cells of the BM. However, patients with an abnormal BM karyotype displayed increased frequency of FS induction as compared to patients with a normal karyotype. In three cases the heritable FS was found to be at or near the breakpoints of the chromosomal rearrangements detected in the malignant cells. The findings are discussed with regard to cancer specific breakpoints, oncogene loci and sites where viral DNA can be inserted to the genome. The results of this study suggest that autosomal folate sensitive FS may increase the risk for haematologic malignancies through a complex mechanism which remains to be clarified.

Euthanasia has become a prominent social and ethical issue in which nurses play an important role. This study evaluated, for the first time in Greece, the acceptance and enactment of passive euthanasia among Greek nursing staff, measured in relation to the type of patients cared for. Passive euthanasia, illegal in Greece, is defined as either withdrawing or withholding life-sustaining treatment. Fifty-one per cent responded that they would not be willing to withhold life-sustaining treatment if legalized, while almost 30% responded that they had withheld lifesustaining treatment from a patient at least once in the past; specifically 47.7% of intensive care unit nurses (OR 8.2; 95% CI: 1.6-41.3), 20% of cancer ward nurses (OR 2.7; 95% CI: 0.5-15.6)] and 8.3% of other nurses from other wards (P = 0.001). Age, gender and self-reported levels of religiosity among Greek nurses were not found to affect statistically any variable regarding euthanasia and its enactment.
