We aim at characterizing the X-ray-to-optical/near-infrared broad-band emission of luminous QSOs in the first Gyr of cosmic evolution to understand whether they exhibit differences compared to the lower-\textit{z} QSO population. Our goal is also to provide for these objects a reliable and uniform catalog of SED fitting derivable properties such as bolometric and monochromatic luminosities, Eddington ratios, dust extinction, strength of the hot dust emission. We characterize the X-ray/UV emission of each QSO using average SEDs from luminous Type 1 sources and calculate bolometric and monochromatic luminosities. Finally we construct a mean SED extending from the X-rays to the NIR bands. We find that the UV-optical emission of these QSOs can be modelled with templates of $z\sim$2 luminous QSOs. We observe that the bolometric luminosities derived adopting some bolometric corrections at 3000 \AA\ ($BC_{3000\text{\AA}}$) largely used in the literature are slightly overestimated by 0.13 dex as they also include reprocessed IR emission. We estimate a revised value, i.e. $BC_{3000\text{\AA}}=3.3 $ which can be used for deriving $L_\text{bol}$ in \textit{z} $\geq$ 6 QSOs. A sub-sample of 11 QSOs is provided with rest-frame NIR photometry, showing a broad range of hot dust emission strength, with two sources exhibiting low levels of emission. Despite potential observational biases arising from non-uniform photometric coverage and selection biases, we produce a X-ray-to-NIR mean SED for QSOs at \textit{z} $\gtrsim$ 6, revealing a good match with templates of lower-redshift, luminous QSOs up to the UV-optical range, with a slightly enhanced contribution from hot dust in the NIR.

The energy released by AGN has the potential to heat or remove the gas of the ISM, thus likely impacting the cold molecular gas reservoir of host galaxies at first, with star formation following on longer timescales. Previous works on high-z galaxies have yielded conflicting results, possibly due to selection biases and other systematics. To provide a reliable benchmark for galaxy evolution models at cosmic noon (z=1-3), two surveys were conceived: SUPER and KASHz, both targeting unbiased X-ray-selected AGN at z>1 that span a wide bolometric luminosity range. In this paper, we assess the effects of AGN feedback on the molecular gas content of host galaxies in a statistically robust, uniformly selected, coherently analyzed sample of AGN at z=1-2.6, drawn from the KASHz and SUPER surveys. By using ALMA data in combination with dedicated SED modeling, we retrieve CO and FIR luminosity as well as $M_*$ of SUPER and KASHz AGN. We selected non-active galaxies from PHIBBS, ASPECS and multiple ALMA/NOEMA surveys of sub-mm galaxies. By matching the samples in z, $M_*$ and $L_{FIR}$, we compared the properties of AGN and non-active galaxies within a Bayesian framework. We find that AGN hosts at given $L_{FIR}$ are on average CO depleted compared to non-active galaxies, confirming what was previously found in the SUPER survey. Moreover, the molecular gas fraction distributions of AGN and non-active galaxies are statistically different, with that of of AGN being skewed to lower values. Our results indicate that AGN can indeed reduce the total cold molecular gas reservoir of their host galaxies. We present a detailed JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam analysis of a gravitationally-lensed galaxy ($\rm \mu=17-21$) at redshift 6.14 magnified by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS J0416. The target galaxy is overall a typical compact and UV-faint ($\rm M_{UV}=-17.8$) Lyman-$\alpha$ emitter; yet, the large magnification allows the detailed characterisation of structures on sub-galactic (down to few parsec) scales. Prominent optical $\rm H\alpha$, $\rm H\beta$ and [OIII]$\lambda\lambda4959,5007$ lines are spatially resolved with the high spectral resolution grating (G395H, R~2700), with large equivalent widths, EW($\rm H\beta$+[OIII])$\gtrsim1000$ \AA, and elevated ionising photon production efficiencies $\rm log(\xi_{ion}/erg^{-1}Hz)=25.2-25.7$. NIRCam deep imaging reveals the presence of compact rest-UV bright regions along with individual star clusters of sizes $\rm R_{eff}=3-8~pc$ and masses $\rm M\sim2\cdot10^5-5\cdot10^{6}~M_\odot$ These clusters are characterised by steep UV slopes, $\rm\beta_{UV}\lesssim-2.5$, in some cases associated with a dearth of line emission, indicating possible leaking of the ionising radiation, as also supported by a Lyman-$\rm \alpha$ emission peaking at $\rm \sim100~km~s^{-1}$ from the systemic redshift. While the entire system is characterised by low-metallicity, $\sim0.1~Z_\odot$, the NIRSpec-IFU map also reveals the presence of a low-luminosity, metal-poor region with $\rm Z\lesssim2\%~Z_\odot$, barely detected in NIRCam imaging; this region is displaced by $\rm >200~pc$ from one of the UV brightest structures of the system, and it would have been too faint to detect if not for the large magnification of the system., Comment: 19 pages (11 figures, 2 tables) + appendix (3 pages, 4 figures, 1 table). We report the serendipitous discovery of a faint (M_UV > -12.2), low-metallicity (Z ~ 0.02 Zsun), ionizing source (dubbed T2c) with a spectroscopic redshift of z=6.146. T2c is part of a larger structure amplified by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACSJ0416, and was observed with JWST/NIRSpec IFU. Stacking the short-wavelength NIRCam data reveals no stellar continuum detection down to a magnitude limit of m_UV ~ 31.0 (3 sigma). However, prominent Hb, [OIII]4959,5007, and Ha emissions are detected, with equivalent widths exceeding 200A, 800A, and 1300A (3 sigma), respectively. The corresponding intrinsic (magnification-corrected x23 +/- 3) ultraviolet and optical rest-frame magnitudes exceed 34.4 and 33.9 (corresponding to M_uv and M_opt fainter than -12.2 and -12.8, at lambda_rest ~ 2000A and ~5000A, respectively), suggesting a stellar mass lower than a few 10^4 Msun under an instantaneous burst scenario. The inferred ionizing photon production efficiency (xi_ion) is high, xi_ion >~ 26.08(25.86) 3(5)sigma, assuming no dust attenuation and no Lyman continuum leakage, indicating the presence of massive stars despite the low mass of the object. The very poor sampling of the initial mass function at such low mass star-forming complex suggests that the formation of very massive stars might be favored in very low metallicity environments. T2c is surrounded by Balmer and weak oxygen emission on a spatial scale of a few hundred parsecs after correcting for lensing effects. This system resembles an HII region potentially powered by currently undetected, extremely efficient, low-metallicity star complexes or clusters. We propose that massive O-type stars populate this low-mass and metallicity high-redshift satellites, likely caught in an early and short formation phase, contributing to the ionization of the surrounding medium., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Protoclusters at $z>2$ are gas-rich regions characterized by high star-formation activity. The same physical properties that enhance star formation in protoclusters are also thought to boost the growth of SMBHs. We aim to test this scenario by probing the AGN content of SPT2349-56, a massive, gas-rich, and highly star-forming protocluster core at $z=4.3$ discovered as an overdensity of DSFGs, via Chandra (200 ks) observations, and comparing the results with the field environment. We detected two protocluster members, corresponding to an AGN fraction among DSFGs of $\approx10\%$. This value is consistent with other protoclusters at $z=2-4$, but higher than the AGN incidence among DSFGs in the field environment. Both AGN are heavily obscured sources and hosted in star-forming galaxies with $\approx3\times10^{10}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ stellar masses. We estimate that the ISM in the host galaxies can contribute significantly to the nuclear obscuration. One of the two AGN is highly luminous ($L_X=2\times10^{45}\,\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}$) and Compton-thick ($N_H=2\times10^{24}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$), and likely powered by a $M_{BH}>6\times10^8\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ SMBH. Its high accretion rate suggests that it is in the phase of efficient growth required to explain the presence of extremely massive SMBHs in the centers of local galaxy clusters. Considering SPT2349-56 and DRC, a similar protocuster at $z=4$, we find that gas-rich protocluster cores at $z\approx4$ enhance the triggering of luminous (log$\frac{L_X}{\mathrm{erg\,s^{-1}}}=45-46$) AGN by 3-5 orders of magnitude with respect to the field environment. Our results indicate that gas-rich protoclusters at high redshift boost the growth of SMBHs, which will likely impact the subsequent evolution of the structures, and thus represent key science targets to obtain a complete understanding of the relation between environment and galaxy evolution., Comment: Submitted to A&A, referee comments included

IRASF11119 is an ultra-luminous IR galaxy with post-merger morphology, hosting a type-1 QSO at z=0.189. Its 2013 Suzaku spectrum shows a prominent Ultra Fast Outflow (UFO) absorption feature (v_out~0.25c). In 2021, we obtained the first XMM-Newton long look of the target, coordinated with a simultaneous NuSTAR observation. The new high-quality data allow us to detect at P>99.8% c.l. multiple absorption features associated with the known UFO. Furthermore, an emission plus absorption feature at 1.1-1.3 keV reveals the presence of a blueshifted P-Cygni profile in the soft band. We associate the hard band features with blends of FeXXV and FeXXVI He$\alpha$-Ly$\alpha$ and He$\beta$-Ly$\beta$ line pairs and infer a large column (N$_H$~$10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) of highly ionized (log$\xi$~5) gas outflowing at v_out=0.27c. The 1 keV feature can be associated with a blend of Fe and Ne transitions, produced by a lower column (N$_H$~$10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) and ionization (log$\xi$~2.6) gas component outflowing at the same speed. Using a radiative-transfer disk wind model to fit the highly ionized UFO, we derive a large mass outflow rate, comparable with the mass accretion rate (M$_{out}$=4.25 M$_{Sun}$/yr, ~1.6 M$_{acc}$), and kinetic energy and momentum flux among the highest reported in the literature. We measure an extremely low high-energy cut-off (E$_c$~25 keV). Several other cases in the literature suggest that a steep X-ray continuum may be related to the formation of powerful winds. The lack of a significant momentum boost between the nuclear UFO and the different phases of the large-scale outflow, observed in IRASF11119 and in a growing number of sources with powerful UFOs, can be explained by (i) a momentum-driven expansion, (ii) an inefficient coupling of the UFO with the host ISM, or (iii) by repeated energy-driven expansion episodes with low duty-cycle, that average out on long time-scales., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present JWST/NIRSpec Integral Field Spectroscopy in the rest-frame optical bands of the system PJ308-21, a quasar at $z=6.2342$ caught as its host galaxy interacts with companion galaxies. We detect spatially extended emission of several emission lines (H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, [OIII], [NII], [SII], HeII), which we use to study the properties of the ionized phase of the interstellar medium: the source and hardness of the photoionizing radiation field, metallicity, dust reddening, electron density and temperature, and star formation. We also marginally detect continuum starlight emission associated with the companion sources. We find that at least two independent satellite galaxies are part of the system. While the quasar host appears highly enriched and obscured, with AGN-like photoionization conditions, the western companion shows minimal dust extinction, low metallicity ($Z\sim0.4$ Z$_\odot$), and star-formation driven photoionization. The eastern companion shows higher extinction and metallicity ($Z\sim0.8$ Z$_\odot$) compared to the western companion, and it is at least partially photoionized by the nearby quasar. We do not find any indication of AGN in the companion sources. Our study shows that while the quasar host galaxy is already very massive ($M_{\rm dyn}>10^{11}$ M$_\odot$), it is still rapidly building up by accreting two relatively massive ($M_{\rm star}\sim 10^{10}$ M$_\odot$) companion sources. We investigate the X-ray properties of a large sample of 71 broad line and narrow line AGN at 2

We present a catalog of hard X-ray serendipitous sources detected in the first 80 months of observations by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). The NuSTAR serendipitous survey 80-month (NSS80) catalog has an unprecedented $\sim$ 62 Ms of effective exposure time over 894 unique fields (a factor of three increase over the 40-month catalog), with an areal coverage of $\sim $36 deg$^2$, larger than all NuSTAR extragalactic surveys. NSS80 provides 1274 hard X-ray sources in the $3-24$ keV band (822 new detections compared to the previous 40-month catalog). Approximately 76% of the NuSTAR sources have lower-energy ($<10$ keV) X-ray counterparts from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift-XRT. We have undertaken an extensive campaign of ground-based spectroscopic follow-up to obtain new source redshifts and classifications for 427 sources. Combining these with existing archival spectroscopy provides redshifts for 550 NSS80 sources, of which 547 are classified. The sample is primarily composed of active galactic nuclei (AGN), detected over a large range in redshift ($z$ = 0.012-3.43), but also includes 58 spectroscopically confirmed Galactic sources. In addition, five AGN/galaxy pairs, one dual AGN system, one BL Lac candidate, and a hotspot of 4C 74.26 (radio quasar) have been identified. The median rest-frame $10-40$ keV luminosity and redshift of the NSS80 are $\langle{L_\mathrm{10-40 keV}}\rangle$ = 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\langle z \rangle = 0.56$. We investigate the optical properties and construct composite optical spectra to search for subtle signatures not present in the individual spectra, finding an excess of redder BL AGN compared to optical quasar surveys predominantly due to the presence of the host-galaxy and, at least in part, due to dust obscuration., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ:S. 57 pages, 32 figures

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) presents unique challenges due to their comparable radiation output to their host galaxies and complex accretion dynamics. We introduce a novel module within the CIGALE framework specifically designed for SED fitting of LLAGN, incorporating both empirical relationships like $L_\mathrm{X}$--$L_\mathrm{12\mu m}$ and physically-based accretion models such as advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) and truncated accretion disks. This allows for more accurate depiction of LLAGN central emissions. Using this module, we analyzed a set of 52 X-ray-detected local galaxies, primarily LINERs and Seyferts, and compared its performance to higher-luminosity AGN from the COSMOS and SDSS datasets. Our results show that the module adeptly estimates bolometric luminosities with high precision, despite significant galaxy contamination. It also introduces a versatile X-ray bolometric correction formula covering a vast range of luminosities. Further, our study explored the $\alpha_\mathrm{ox}$ index, which measures the UV to X-ray emission slope, showing that unlike quasars, LLAGN display either stable or only slightly varying $\alpha_\mathrm{ox}$ values, indicating differing accretion and photon production processes in the low luminosity regime. Additionally, we observed a significant drop of 1.4 dex in specific star formation rates when moving from whole galaxies to a central 9-arcsecond aperture in LLAGN, suggesting potential feedback mechanisms at play. Overall, our findings underscore the importance of a multiwavelength approach in AGN studies, highlighting distinct behaviors of LLAGN compared to quasars, thus enhancing our understanding of LLAGN and providing a framework for future comprehensive AGN population studies., Comment: Submitted to A&A

The detection of blue-shifted absorption lines likely associated with ionized Iron K-shell transitions in the X-ray spectra of many Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) suggests the presence of a highly ionized gas outflowing with mildly relativistic velocities (0.03c-0.6c), named Ultra-Fast Outflow (UFO). Within the SUBWAYS project we characterized these winds starting from a sample of 22 radio-quiet quasars at 0.1 < z < 0.4, and compared the results with similar studies in the literature on samples of 42 local radio-quiet Seyfert galaxies and 14 high redshift radio-quiet quasars. The scope of our work is a statistical study of UFO parameters and incidence, considering key physical properties of the sources, e.g. supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, bolometric luminosity, accretion rates and Spectral Energy Distribution, with the aim of gaining new insights into the UFO launching mechanisms. We find indications that highly luminous AGN with steeper X-ray/UV ratio, are more likely to host UFO. The presence of UFO is not significantly related to any other AGN property in our sample. These findings suggest that the UFO phenomenon may be transient. Focusing on AGN with UFO, other important results are: (1) faster UFO have larger ionization parameters and column densities; (2) X-ray radiation plays a more crucial role in driving highly ionized winds compared to UV; (3) the correlation between outflow velocity and luminosity is significantly flatter than what expected for radiatively driven winds; (4) more massive BH experience higher wind mass-losses, suppressing accretion of matter onto the BH; (5) the UFO launching radius is positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. Powerful outflows from active galactic nuclei (AGN) can significantly impact the gas reservoirs of their host galaxies. However, it is still unclear how these outflows can propagate from the very central regions of galaxies to their outskirts, and whether nuclear winds can be driven by and/or be responsible for drastic spectral transitions. In this work we test feedback propagation models on the case test of 2MASS 0918+2117 (2M0918), a z=0.149 X-ray variable AGN, which showed tentative evidence for nuclear ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) in a 2005 XMM-Newton observation. We also investigate whether UFOs can be related to the observed X-ray variability. We observed 2M0918 with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR in 2020 to confirm the presence and characterize the UFOs. We perform a kinematic analysis of the 2005 SDSS optical spectrum to reveal and measure the properties of galaxy-scale ionized outflows. Furthermore, we construct 20-year-long lightcurves of observed flux, line-of-sight column density, and intrinsic accretion rate from the spectra of the first 4 SRG/eROSITA all-sky surveys and archival observations from Chandra and XMM-Newton.We significantly detect UFOs with v$\sim$0.16c and galaxy-scale ionized outflows with velocities of $\sim$ 700 km/s. We also find that the drastic X-ray variability (factors >10) can be explained both in terms of variable obscuration and variable intrinsic luminosity.Comparing the energetics of the two outflow phases, 2M0918 is consistent with momentum-driven wind propagation. 2M0918 expands the sample of AGN with both UFOs and ionized gas winds from 5 to 6, and brings the sample of AGN hosting multiscale outflows to 19, contributing to a clearer picture of feedback physics. From the variations in accretion rate, column density, and ionization level of the obscurer, we propose a scenario that connects obscurers, an accretion enhancement, and the emergence of UFOs, Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

We present JWST/NIRSpec integral field data of the quasar PJ308-21 at $z=6.2342$. As shown by previous ALMA and HST imaging, the quasar has two companion sources, interacting with the quasar host galaxy. The high-resolution G395H/290LP NIRSpec spectrum covers the $2.87-5.27\ \rm \mu m$ wavelength range and shows the rest-frame optical emission of the quasar with exquisite quality ($S/N\sim 100-400$ per spectral element). Based on the H$\beta$ line from the broad line region, we obtain an estimate of the black hole mass $M_{\rm BH,H\beta}\sim 2.7\times 10^{9}\ \rm M_{\odot}$. This value is within a factor $\lesssim 1.5$ of the H$\alpha$-based black hole mass from the same spectrum ($M_{\rm BH, H\alpha}\sim 1.93\times 10^{9}\ \rm M_{\odot}$) and is consistent with a previous estimate relying on the MgII $\lambda 2799$ ($M_{\rm BH, MgII}\sim 2.65\times 10^{9}\ \rm M_{\odot}$). All these $M_{\rm BH}$ are within the $\sim 0.5$ dex intrinsic scatter of the adopted mass calibrations. The high Eddington ratio of PJ308-21 $\lambda_{\rm Edd,H\beta}\sim 0.67$ ($\lambda_{\rm Edd,H\alpha}\sim 0.96$) is in line with the overall quasar population at $z \gtrsim 6$. The relative strengths of the [OIII], FeII and H$\beta$ lines are consistent with the empirical "Eigenvector 1" correlations as observed for low redshift quasars. We find evidence for blueshifted [OIII] $\lambda 5007$ emission with a velocity offset $\Delta v_{\rm [OIII]}=-1922\pm 39$ km s$^{-1}$ from the systemic velocity and a $\rm FWHM([OIII])=2776^{+75}_{-74}$ km s$^{-1}$. This may be the signature of an outflow from the nuclear region, despite the true values of $\Delta v_{\rm [OIII]}$ and $\rm FWHM([OIII])$ are likely more uncertain due to the blending with H$\beta$ and FeII lines. In this work, we study the AGN radio detection effectiveness in the major deep extragalactic surveys, considering different AGN obscuration levels, redshift, and AGN bolometric luminosities. We particularly focus on comparing their radio and X-ray detectability, making predictions for present and future radio surveys. We extrapolate the predictions of AGN population synthesis model of cosmic X-ray background (CXB) to the radio band, by deriving the 1.4 GHz luminosity functions of unobscured (i.e. with hydrogen column densities $\log N_{H} <22$), obscured ($22<\log N_{H}<24$) and Compton-thick (CTK, $\log N_{H} >24$) AGN. We then use these functions to forecast the number of detectable AGN based on the area, flux limit, and completeness of a given radio survey and compare it with the AGN number resulting from X-ray predictions. When applied to deep extragalactic fields covered both by radio and X-ray observations, we show that, while X-ray selection is generally more effective in detecting unobscured AGN, the surface density of CTK AGN radio detected is on average $\sim 10$ times larger than the X-ray one, and even greater at high redshifts, considering the current surveys and facilities. Our results suggest that thousands of CTK AGN are already present in current radio catalogs, but most of them escaped any detection in the corresponding X-ray observations. We also present expectations for the number of AGN to be detected by the Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO) in its future deep and wide radio continuum surveys, finding that it will be able to detect more than 2000 AGN at $z>6$ and some tens at $z>10$, more than half of which are expected to be CTK., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

We present JWST/NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of a lensed Population III candidate stellar complex (dubbed Lensed And Pristine 1, LAP1), with a lensing-corrected stellar mass ~<10^4 Msun, absolute luminosity M_UV > -11.2 (m_UV > 35.6), confirmed at redshift 6.639 +/- 0.004. The system is strongly amplified (\mu >~ 100) by straddling a critical line of the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS J0416. Despite the stellar continuum is currently not detected in the Hubble and JWST/NIRCam and NIRISS imaging, arclet-like shapes of Lyman and Balmer lines, Lya, Hg, Hb and Ha are detected with NIRSpec IFS with signal-to-noise ratios SNR=5-13 and large equivalent widths (>300-2000A), along with a remarkably weak [OIII]4959-5007 at SNR ~ 4. LAP1 shows a large ionizing photon production efficiency, log(\xi_{ion}[erg~Hz^{-1}])>26. From the metallicity indexes R23 = ([OIII]4959-5007 + [OII]3727) / Hb ~< 0.74 and R3 = ([OIII]5007 / Hb) = 0.55 +/- 0.14, we derive an oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) ~< 6.3. Intriguingly, the Ha emission is also measured in mirrored sub-components where no [OIII] is detected, providing even more stringent upper limits on the metallicity if in-situ star formation is ongoing in this region (12+log(O/H) < 6, or Z < 0.002 Zsun). The formal stellar mass limit of the sub-components would correspond to ~10^{3} Msun or M_UV fainter than -10. Alternatively, such a metal-free pure line emitting region could be the first case of a fluorescing HI gas region, induced by transverse escaping ionizing radiation from a nearby star-complex. The presence of large equivalent-width hydrogen lines and the deficiency of metal lines in such a small region, make LAP1 the most metal poor star-forming region currently known in the reionization era and a promising site that may host isolated, pristine stars., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. The 500ks Chandra ACIS-I observation of the field around the $z=6.31$ quasar SDSS J1030+0524 is currently the 5th deepest extragalactic X-ray survey. The rich multi-band coverage of the field allowed for an effective identification and redshift determination of the X-ray source counterparts: to date a catalog of 243 extragalactic X-ray sources with either a spectroscopic or photometric redshift estimate in the range $z\approx0-6$ is available over a 355 arcmin$^2$ area. Given its depth and the multi-band information, this catalog is an excellent resource to investigate X-ray spectral properties of distant Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and derive the redshift evolution of their obscuration. We performed a thorough X-ray spectral analysis for each object in the sample, measuring its nuclear column density $N_{\rm H}$ and intrinsic (de-absorbed) 2-10 keV rest-frame luminosity, $L_{2-10}$. Whenever possible, we also used the presence of the Fe K$_\alpha$ emission line to improve the photometric redshift estimates. We measured the fractions of AGN hidden by column densities in excess of $10^{22}$ and $10^{23}$cm$^{-2}$ ($f_{22}$ and $f_{23}$, respectively) as a function of $L_{2-10}$ and redshift, and corrected for selection effects to recover the intrinsic obscured fractions. At $z\sim 1.2$, we found $f_{22}\sim0.7-0.8$ and $f_{23}\sim0.5-0.6$, respectively, in broad agreement with the results from other X-ray surveys. No significant variations with X-ray luminosity were found within the limited luminosity range probed by our sample (log$L_{2-10}\sim 42.8-44.3$). When focusing on luminous AGN with log$L_{2-10}\sim44$ to maximize the sample completeness up to large cosmological distances, we did not observe any significant change in $f_{22}$ or $f_{23}$ over the redshift range $z\sim0.8-3$. We present the broad-band X-ray spectral analysis (0.6-50 keV) of seven Compton-Thick active galactic nuclei (CT-AGN; line-of-sight, l.o.s., column density $>10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) candidates selected from the Swift-BAT 100-month catalog, using archival NuSTAR data. This work is in continuation of the on-going research of the Clemson-INAF group to classify CT-AGN candidates at redshift $z<0.05$, using physically-motivated torus models. Our results confirm that three out of seven targets are \textit{bona-fide} CT-AGN. Adding our results to the previously analysed sources using NuSTAR data, we increase the population of bona-fide CT-AGN by $\sim9\%$, bringing the total number to 35 out of 414 AGN. We also performed a comparative study using MyTorus and borus02 on the spectra in our sample, finding that both physical models are strongly consistent in the parameter space of l.o.s. column density and photon index. Furthermore, the clumpiness of the torus clouds is also investigated by separately computing the line-of-sight and average torus column densities, in each of the seven sources. Adding our results to all the previous 48 CT-AGN candidates analysed by the Clemson-INAF research team having NuSTAR observations: we find $78\%$ of the sources are likely to have a clumpy distribution of the obscuring material surrounding the accreting supermassive black hole., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Section 4. The existence of luminous quasars (QSO) at the Epoch of Reionization (EoR; i.e. z>6) powered by supermassive black holes (SMBH) with masses $\gtrsim10^9~M_\odot$ challenges models of early SMBH formation. To shed light on the nature of these sources we started a multiwavelength programme based on a sample of 18 HYPerluminous quasars at the Epoch of ReionizatION (HYPERION). These are the luminous QSOs whose SMBH must have had the fastest mass growth during the Universe first Gyr. In this paper we present the HYPERION sample and report on the first of the 3 years planned observations of the 2.4 Ms XMM-Newton Multi-Year Heritage program on which HYPERION is based. The goal of this program is to accurately characterize the X-ray nuclear properties of QSOs at the EoR. Through a joint X-ray spectral analysis of 10 sources, in the rest-frame $\sim2-50$ keV range, we report a steep average photon index ($\Gamma\sim2.4\pm0.1$). Absorption is not required. The average $\Gamma$ is inconsistent at $\geq4\sigma$ level with the canonical 1.8-2 value measured in QSO at z<6. This spectral slope is also much steeper than that reported in lower-z QSOs with similar luminosity or accretion rate, thus suggesting a genuine redshift evolution. Alternatively, we can interpret this result as the presence of an unusually low-energy cutoff $E_{cut}\sim20$ keV on a standard $\Gamma=1.9$ power-law. We also report on mild indications that HYPERION QSOs show higher soft X-ray emission at 2 keV compared to the UV one at 2500A than expected by lower-z luminous AGN. We speculate that a redshift-dependent coupling between the corona and accretion disc or intrinsically different coronal properties may account for the steep spectral slopes, especially in the presence of powerful winds. We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign with the Multi-Object Double Spectrograph (MODS) instrument mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), aimed at obtaining a spectroscopic redshift for seven Chandra J1030 sources with a photometric redshift >=2.7 and optical magnitude r_AB=[24.5-26.5]. We obtained a spectroscopic redshift for five out of seven targets: all of them have z_spec>=2.5, thus probing the reliability of the Chandra J1030 photometric redshifts. The spectroscopic campaign led to the serendipitous discovery of a z~2.78 large scale structure (LSS) in the J1030 field: the structure contains four X-ray sources (three of which were targeted in the LBT-MODS campaign) and two non-X-ray detected galaxies for which a VLT-MUSE spectrum was already available. The X-ray members of the LSS are hosted in galaxies that are significantly more massive (log(M_*/M_sun)=[10.0-11.1]) than those hosting the two MUSE-detected sources (log(M_*/M_sun)<10). Both observations and simulations show that massive galaxies, and particularly objects having log(M_*/M_sun)>10, are among the best tracers of large scale structures and filaments in the cosmic web. Consequently, our result can explain why X-ray-detected AGN have also been shown to be efficient tracers of large scale structures., Comment: 16 pages, 9 Figures. In the nearby universe jets from AGN are observed to have a dramatic impact on their surrounding extragalactic environment. Their effect at the `cosmic noon' (z>1.5), the epoch when star formation and AGN activity peak, is instead much less constrained. Here we present a study of the giant (750 kpc) radio galaxy 103025+052430 located at the centre of a protocluster at redshift z=1.7, with a focus on its interaction with the external medium. We present new LOFAR observations at 144 MHz, which we combine with VLA 1.4 GHz and 0.5-7 keV Chandra archival data. The new map at 144 MHz confirms that the source has a complex morphology, possibly consistent with the `hybrid morphology' classification. The large size of the source gave us the possibility to perform a resolved radio spectral index analysis, a very unique opportunity for a source at such high redshift. This reveals a tentative flattening of the radio spectral index at the edge of the backflow in the Western lobe, which might be indicating plasma compression. The spatial coincidence between this region and the thermal X-ray bubble C suggests a causal connection between the two. Contrary to previous estimates for the bright X-ray component A, we find that inverse Compton scattering between the radio-emitting plasma of the Eastern lobe and the CMB photons can account for a large fraction (~45%-80%) of its total 0.5-7 keV measured flux. Finally, the X-ray bubble C, which is consistent with a thermal origin, is found to be significantly overpressurised with respect to the ambient medium. This suggests that it will tend to expand and release its energy in the surroundings, contributing to the overall intracluster medium heating. We present a new X-ray spectroscopic study of $22$ luminous ($2\times10^{45}\lesssim L_{\rm bol}\rm /erg\,s^{-1} \lesssim 2\times10^{46}$) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate-redshift ($0.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.4$), as part of the SUpermassive Black hole Winds in the x-rAYS (SUBWAYS) sample, mostly composed of quasars (QSOs) and type\,1 AGN. Here, 17 targets were observed with \textit{XMM-Newton} between 2019--2020 and the remaining 5 are from previous observations. The aim of this large campaign ($1.45\,\rm Ms$ duration) is to characterise the various manifestations of winds in the X-rays driven from supermassive black holes in AGN. In this paper we focus on the search and characterization of ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), which are typically detected through blueshifted absorption troughs in the Fe\,K band ($E>7\,\rm keV$). By following Monte Carlo procedures, we confirm the detection of absorption lines corresponding to highly ionised iron (e.g., Fe\,\textsc{xxv}\,H$\alpha$, Fe\,\textsc{xxvi}\,Ly$\alpha$) in 7/22 sources at the $\gtrsim95\%$ confidence level (for each individual line). The global combined probability of such absorption features in the sample is $>99.9\%$. The SUBWAYS campaign extends at higher luminosity and redshifts than previous local studies on Seyferts, obtained using \xmm and \suzaku observations. We find a UFO detection fraction of $\sim30\%$ on the total sample that is in agreement with the previous findings. This work independently provides further support for the existence of highly-ionised matter propagating at mildly relativistic speed ($\gtrsim0.1c$) in a considerable fraction of AGN over a broad range of luminosities, which is expected to play a key role in the self-regulated AGN feeding-feedback cycle, as also supported by hydrodynamical multiphase simulations., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the multi-epoch monitoring with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton of NGC 1358, a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy whose properties made it a promising candidate X-ray changing look AGN, i.e., a source whose column density could transition from its 2017 Compton-thick (CT-, having line-of-sight Hydrogen column density NH,los>10^24 cm^-2) state to a Compton-thin (NH,los<10^24 cm^-2) one. The multi-epoch X-ray monitoring confirmed the presence of significant NH,los variability over time-scales as short as weeks, and allowed us to confirm the "changing look" nature of NGC 1358, which has most recently been observed in a Compton-thin status. Multi-epoch monitoring with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton is demonstrated to be highly effective in simultaneously constraining three otherwise highly degenerate parameters: the torus average column density and covering factor, and the inclination angle between the torus axis and the observer. We find a tentative anti-correlation between column density and luminosity, which can be understood in the framework of Chaotic Cold Accretion clouds driving recursive AGN feedback. The monitoring campaign of NGC 1358 has proven the efficiency of our newly developed method to select candidate NH,los-variable, heavily obscured AGN, which we plan to soon extend to a larger sample to better characterize the properties of the obscuring material surrounding accreting supermassive black holes, as well as constrain AGN feeding models., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures: main results in Figures 4, 7, 8 and 9. Explaining the existence of $\gtrsim10^8\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ SMBHs at $z>6$ is a persistent challenge to modern astrophysics. Multi-wavelength observations of $z\gtrsim6$ QSOs reveal that, on average, their accretion physics is similar to that of their counterparts at lower redshift. However, QSOs showing properties that deviate from the general behavior can provide useful insights into the physical processes responsible for the rapid growth of SMBHs in the early universe. We present X-ray (XMM-Newton, 100 ks) follow-up observations of a $z\approx6$ QSO, J1641+3755, which was found to be remarkably X-ray bright in a 2018 Chandra dataset. J1641+3755 is not detected in the 2021 XMM-Newton observation, implying that its X-ray flux decreased by a factor $\gtrsim7$ on a notably short timescale (i.e., $\approx115$ rest-frame days), making it the $z>4$ QSO with the largest variability amplitude. We also obtained rest-frame UV spectroscopic and photometric data with textit{LBT}, and compared them with archival datasets. Surprisingly, we found that J1641+3755 became brighter in the rest-frame UV band from 2003 to 2016, while no strong variation occurred from 2016 to 2021. Multiple narrow absorption features are detected in its rest-frame UV spectrum, and several of them can be associated with an intervening system at $z=5.67$. The variability properties of J1641+3755 can be due to intrinsic variations of the accretion rate, a small-scale obscuration event, gravitational lensing due to an intervening object, or an unrelated X-ray transient in a foreground galaxy in 2018. Accounting for all of the $z>6$ QSOs with multiple X-ray observations separated by $>10$ rest-frame days, we found an enhancement of strongly (i.e., by a factor $>3$) X-ray variable objects compared to QSOs at later cosmic times. We combine results from deep ALMA observations of massive ($M_*>10^{10}\;M_{\odot}$) galaxies at different redshifts to show that the column density of their inter stellar medium (ISM) rapidly increases towards early cosmic epochs. Our analysis includes objects from the ASPECS and ALPINE large programs, as well as individual observations of $z\sim 6$ QSO hosts. When accounting for non-detections and correcting for selection effects, we find that the median surface density of the ISM of the massive galaxy population evolves as $\sim(1+z)^{3.3}$. This means that the ISM column density towards the nucleus of a $z>3$ galaxy is typically $>100$ times larger than locally, and it may reach values as high as Compton-thick at $z\gtrsim6$. Remarkably, the median ISM column density is of the same order of what is measured from X-ray observations of large AGN samples already at $z\gtrsim2$. We develop a simple analytic model for the spatial distribution of ISM clouds within galaxies, and estimate the total covering factor towards active nuclei when obscuration by ISM clouds on the host scale is added to that of pc-scale circumnuclear material (the so-called 'torus'). The model includes clouds with a distribution of sizes, masses, and surface densities, and also allows for an evolution of the characteristic cloud surface density with redshift, $\Sigma_{c,*}\propto(1+z)^\gamma$. We show that, for $\gamma=2$, such a model successfully reproduces the increase of the obscured AGN fraction with redshift that is commonly observed in deep X-ray surveys, both when different absorption thresholds and AGN luminosities are considered. Our results suggest that 80-90\% of supermassive black holes in the early Universe ($z>6-8$) are hidden to our view, primarily by the ISM in their hosts. We present new joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of APM 08279+5255, a gravitationally-lensed, broad-absorption line quasar ($z=3.91$). After showing a fairly stable flux ($f_{\rm2-10}\simeq4-5.5\times10^{-13}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$) from 2000 to 2008, APM 08279+5255 was found in a fainter state in the latest X-ray exposures ($f_{\rm2-10}\simeq2.7\times10^{-13}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$), which can likely be ascribed to a lower X-ray activity. Moreover, the 2019 data present a prominent Fe K$\alpha$ emission line and do not show any significant absorption line. This fainter state, coupled to the first hard X-ray sampling of APM 08279+5255, allowed us to measure X-ray reflection and the high-energy cutoff in this source for the first time. From the analysis of previous XMM-Newton and Chandra observations, X-ray reflection is demonstrated to be a long-lasting feature of this source, but less prominent prior to 2008, possibly due to a stronger primary emission. The estimated high-energy cutoff ($E_{\rm cut}=99_{-35}^{+91}$ keV) sets a new redshift record for the farthest ever measured and places APM 08279+5255 in the allowed region of the compactness-temperature diagram of X-ray coronae, in agreement with previous results on high-$z$ quasars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 14 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables

We present the combined Chandra and Swift-BAT spectral analysis of nine low-redshift (z <= 0.10), candidate heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the Swift-BAT 150-month catalog. We located soft (1-10 keV) X-ray counterparts to these BAT sources and joint fit their spectra with physically motivated models.The spectral analysis in the 1-150 keV energy band determined that all sources are obscured, with a line-of-sight column density NH >= 10^22 cm^-2 at a 90% confidence level. Four of these sources show significant obscuration with NH >= 10^23 cm^-2 and two additional sources are candidate Compton-thick Active Galactic Nuclei (CT-AGNs) with NH >= 10^24 cm^-2.These two sources, 2MASX J02051994-0233055 and IRAS 11058-1131, are the latest addition to the previous 3 CT-AGN candidates found using our strategy for soft X-ray follow-up of BAT sources. In here we present the results of our methodology so far, and analyze the effectiveness of applying different selection criteria to discover CT-AGN in the local Universe. Our selection criteria has a ~20% success rate of discovering heavily obscured AGN whose CT nature is confirmed by follow-up NuSTAR observations. This is much higher than the ~5% found in blind surveys.

We publicly release the spectroscopic and photometric redshift catalog of the sources detected with Chandra in the field of the $z$=6.3 quasar SDSS J1030+0525. This is currently the fifth deepest X-ray field, and reaches a 0.5-2 keV flux limit $f_{\rm 0.5-2}$=6$\times$10$^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. By using two independent methods, we measure a photometric redshift for 243 objects, while 123 (51%) sources also have a spectroscopic redshift, 110 of which coming from an INAF-Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Strategic Program. We use the spectroscopic redshifts to determine the quality of the photometric ones, and find it in agreement with that of other X-ray surveys which used a similar number of photometric data-points. In particular, we measure a sample normalized median absolute deviation $\sigma_{NMAD}$=1.48||$z_{phot}$-$z_{spec}$||/(1+$z_{spec}$)=0.065. We use these new spectroscopic and photometric redshifts to study the properties of the Chandra J1030 field. We observe several peaks in our spectroscopic redshift distribution between $z$=0.15 and $z$=1.5, and find that the sources in each peak are often distributed across the whole Chandra field of view. This evidence confirms that X-ray selected AGN can efficiently track large-scale structures over physical scales of several Mpc. Finally, we computed the Chandra J1030 $z>$3 number counts: while the spectroscopic completeness at high-redshift of our sample is limited, our results point towards a potential source excess at $z\geq$4, which we plan to either confirm or reject in the near future with dedicated spectroscopic campaigns., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures. We present the analysis of simultaneous NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data of 8 Compton-thick (CT-) active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates selected in the Swift-Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 100 month survey. This work is part of an ongoing effort to find and characterize all CT-AGN in the local ($z\leq$0.05) Universe. We used two physically motivated models, MYTorus and borus02, to characterize the sources in the sample, finding 5 of them to be confirmed CT-AGN. These results represent an increase of $\sim19$% over the previous NuSTAR-confirmed, BAT-selected CT-AGN at $z\leq0.05$, bringing the total number to 32. This corresponds to an observed fraction of $\sim 8$\% of all AGN within this volume-limited sample, although it increases to $20\pm5$% when limiting the sample to $z\leq0.01$. Out of a sample of 48 CT-AGN candidates, selected using BAT and soft (0.3$-$10 keV) X-ray data, only 24 are confirmed as CT-AGN with the addition of the NuSTAR data. This highlights the importance of NuSTAR when classifying local obscured AGN. We also note that most of the sources in our full sample of 48 Seyfert 2 galaxies with NuSTAR data have significantly different line-of-sight and average torus column densities, favouring a patchy torus scenario., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the X-ray point-source catalogs in two of the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS) fields, W-CDF-S (4.6 deg$^2$) and ELAIS-S1 (3.2 deg$^2$), aiming to fill the gap between deep pencil-beam X-ray surveys and shallow X-ray surveys over large areas. The W-CDF-S and ELAIS-S1 regions were targeted with 2.3 Ms and 1.0 Ms of XMM-Newton observations, respectively; 1.8 Ms and 0.9 Ms exposures remain after flare filtering. The survey in W-CDF-S has a flux limit of 1.0 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over 90% of its area in the 0.5-10 keV band; 4053 sources are detected in total. The survey in ELAIS-S1 has a flux limit of 1.3 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over 90% of its area in the 0.5-10 keV band; 2630 sources are detected in total. Reliable optical-to-IR multiwavelength counterpart candidates are identified for $\approx$ 89% of the sources in W-CDF-S and $\approx$ 87% of the sources in ELAIS-S1. 3186 sources in W-CDF-S and 1985 sources in ELAIS-S1 are classified as AGNs. We also provide photometric redshifts for X-ray sources; $\approx$ 84% of the 3319/2001 sources in W-CDF-S/ELAIS-S1 with optical-to-NIR forced photometry available have either spectroscopic redshifts or high-quality photometric redshifts. The completion of the XMM-Newton observations in the W-CDF-S and ELAIS-S1 fields marks the end of the XMM-SERVS survey data gathering. The $\approx$ 12,000 point-like X-ray sources detected in the whole $\approx$ 13 deg$^2$ XMM-SERVS survey will benefit future large-sample AGN studies., Comment: 40 pages, 35 figures. The discovery of hundreds of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe powered by already grown SMBHs challenges our knowledge of SMBH formation. In particular, investigations of $z>6$ QSOs presenting notable properties can provide unique information on the physics of fast SMBH growth in the early universe. We present the results of follow-up observations of the $z=6.515$ radio-quiet QSO PSO167-13, which is interacting with a close companion galaxy. The PSO167-13 system has been recently proposed to host the first heavily obscured X-ray source at high redshift. We observed PSO167-13 with Chandra/ACIS-S (177 ks), and obtained new spectroscopic observations (7.2 h) with Magellan/FIRE. No significant X-ray emission is detected from the PSO167-13 system, suggesting that the obscured X-ray source previously tentatively detected was either due to a strong background fluctuation or is highly variable. The upper limit (90% confidence level) on the X-ray emission of PSO167-13 ($L_{2-10\,\mathrm{keV}}<8.3\times10^{43}\,\mathrm{erg s^{-1}}$) is the lowest available for a $z>6$ QSO. The ratio between the X-ray and UV luminosity of $\alpha_{ox}<-1.95$ makes PSO167-13 a strong outlier from the $\alpha_{ox}-L_{UV}$ and $L_X-L_{\mathrm{bol}}$ relations. In particular, its X-ray emission is $>6$ times weaker than the expectation based on its UV luminosity. The new Magellan/FIRE spectrum of PSO167-13 is strongly affected by the unfavorable sky conditions, but the tentatively detected C IV and Mg II emission lines appear strongly blueshifted. The most plausible explanations for the X-ray weakness of PSO167-13 are intrinsic weakness or small-scale absorption by Compton-thick material. The possible strong blueshift of its emission lines hints at the presence of nuclear winds, which could be related to its X-ray weakness., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

Outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are expected to have a significant impact on the host galaxy evolution, but it is still debated how they are accelerated and propagate on galaxy-wide scales. This work addresses these questions by studying the link between X-ray, nuclear ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) and extended ionised outflows, for the first time in two quasars close to the peak of AGN activity ($z\sim2$), where AGN feedback is expected to be more effective. As targets, we selected two multiple-lensed quasars at $z\sim1.5$, HS 0810+2554 and SDSS J1353+1138, known to host UFOs and observed with the near-IR integral field spectrometer SINFONI at the VLT. We performed a kinematical analysis of the [O III]$\lambda$5007 optical emission line, in order to trace the presence of ionised outflows. We detected spatially resolved ionised outflows in both galaxies, extended more than 8 kpc and moving up to $v>2000$ km/s. We derived mass outflow rates of $\sim$12 M$_{sun}$/yr and $\sim$2 M$_{sun}$/yr for HS 0810+2554 and SDSS J1353+1138. Comparing with the co-hosted UFO energetics, the ionised outflow energetics in HS 0810+2554 is broadly consistent with a momentum-driven regime of wind propagation, while in SDSS J1353+1138 it differs by a factor of $\sim$100 from theoretical predictions, requiring either a massive molecular outflow or a high variability of the AGN activity to account for such a discrepancy. By additionally considering our results with those from the small sample of well-studied objects (all local but one), with both UFO and extended (ionised/atomic/molecular) outflow detections, we found that in 10 out of 12 galaxies the large-scale outflow energetics is consistent with the theoretical predictions of either a momentum- or an energy-driven scenario. Broadband X-ray spectroscopy of the X-ray emission produced in the coronae of active galactic nuclei (AGN) can provide important insights into the physical conditions very close to their central supermassive black holes. The temperature of the Comptonizing plasma that forms the corona is manifested through a high-energy cutoff that has been difficult to directly constrain even in the brightest AGN because it requires high-quality data at energies above 10 keV. In this paper we present a large collection of coronal cutoff constraints for obscured AGN based on a sample of 130 AGN selected in the hard X-ray band with Swift/BAT and observed nearly simultaneously with NuSTAR and Swift/XRT. We find that under a reasonable set of assumptions regarding partial constraints the median cutoff is well constrained to 290$\pm$20 keV, where the uncertainty is statistical and given at the 68% confidence level. We investigate the sensitivity of this result to our assumptions and find that consideration of various known systematic uncertainties robustly places the median cutoff between 240 keV and 340 keV. The central 68% of the intrinsic cutoff distribution is found to be between about 140 keV and 500 keV, with estimated uncertainties of 20 keV and 100 keV, respectively. In comparison with the literature, we find no clear evidence that the cutoffs in obscured and unobscured AGN are substantially different. We present a procedure to constrain the redshifts of obscured ($N_H > 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) based on low-count statistics X-ray spectra, which can be adopted when photometric and/or spectroscopic redshifts are unavailable or difficult to obtain. We selected a sample of 54 obscured AGN candidates on the basis of their X-ray hardness ratio, $HR>-0.1$, in the Chandra deep field ($\sim$479 ks, 335 arcmin$^2$) around the $z=6.3$ QSO SDSS J1030+0524. The sample has a median value of $\approx80$ net counts in the 0.5-7 keV energy band. We estimate reliable X-ray redshift solutions taking advantage of the main features in obscured AGN spectra, like the Fe 6.4 keV K$\mathrm{\alpha}$ emission line, the 7.1 keV Fe absorption edge and the photoelectric absorption cut-off. The significance of such features is investigated through spectral simulations, and the derived X-ray redshift solutions are then compared with photometric redshifts. Both photometric and X-ray redshifts are derived for 33 sources. When multiple solutions are derived by any method, we find that combining the redshift solutions of the two techniques improves the rms by a factor of two. Using our redshift estimates ($0.1\lesssim z \lesssim 4$), we derived absorbing column densities in the range $\sim 10^{22}-10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ and absorption-corrected, 2-10 keV rest-frame luminosities between $\sim 10^{42}$ and $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with median values of $N_H = 1.7 \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $L_{\mathrm{2-10\, keV}} = 8.3\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, respectively. Our results suggest that the adopted procedure can be applied to current and future X-ray surveys, for sources detected only in the X-rays or that have uncertain photometric or single-line spectroscopic redshifts., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures

The SINFONI survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER) was designed to conduct a blind search for AGN-driven outflows on X-ray selected AGN at redshift z$\sim$2 with high ($\sim$2 kpc) spatial resolution, and correlate them to the properties of the host galaxy and central black hole. The main aims of this paper are: a) to derive reliable estimates for the BH mass and accretion rates for the Type-1 AGN in this survey; b) to characterize the properties of the AGN driven winds in the BLR. We analyzed rest-frame optical and UV spectra of 21 Type-1 AGN. We found that the BH masses estimated from H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ lines are in agreement. We estimate BH masses in the range Log(M$\rm_{BH}/M_{\odot}$)=8.4-10.8 and Eddington ratios $\rm\lambda_{Edd}$ =0.04-1.3. We confirm that the CIV line width does not correlate with the Balmer lines and the peak of the line profile is blue-shifted with respect to the [OIII]-based systemic redshift. These findings support the idea that the CIV line is tracing outflowing gas in the BLR, with velocities up to $\sim$4700 km/s. We confirm the strong dependence of the BLR wind velocity with the UV-to-Xray continuum slope, L$\rm_{Bol}$ and $\rm\lambda_{Edd}$. We inferred BLR mass outflow rates in the range 0.005-3 M$_{\odot}$/yr, showing a correlation with the bolometric luminosity consistent with that observed for ionized winds in the NLR and X-ray winds detected in local AGN, and kinetic power $\sim$10$^{[-7:-4]}\times$ L$\rm_{Bol}$. Finally, we found an anti-correlation between the equivalent width of the [OIII] line with respect to the CIV shift, and a positive correlation with [OIII] outflow velocity. These findings, for the first time in an unbiased sample of AGN at z$\sim$2, support a scenario where BLR winds are connected to galaxy scale detected outflows, and are capable of affecting the gas in the NLR located at kpc scale., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the spectroscopic confirmation of a large scale structure around the luminous, z=6.31 QSO SDSS~J1030+0524, that is powered by a billion solar mass black hole. The structure is populated by at least six members, four Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and two Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs). The four LBGs have been identified among a sample of 21 i-band dropouts with z{AB}<25.5 selected up to projected separations of 5 physical Mpc (15 arcmin) from the QSO. Their redshifts have been determined through up to 8hr-long multi-object spectroscopic observations at 8-10m class telescopes. The two LAEs have been identified in a 6hr VLT/MUSE observation centered on the QSO. The redshifts of the six galaxies cover the range 6.129-6.355. Assuming that peculiar velocities are negligible, this range corresponds to radial separations of +/-5 physical Mpc from the QSO, that is comparable to the projected scale of the observed LBG distribution on the sky. We conservatively estimate that this structure is significant at >3.5 sigma level, and that the level of the galaxy overdensity is at least 1.5-2 within the large volume sampled (~780 physical Mpc^3). The spectral properties of the six member galaxies (Lyalpha strength and UV luminosity) are similar to those of field galaxies at similar redshifts. This is the first spectroscopic identification of a galaxy overdensity around a super-massive black hole in the first billion years of the Universe. We present a series of new, publicly available mock catalogs of X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs), non-active galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. They are based on up-to-date observational results on the demographic of extragalactic X-ray sources and their extrapolations.These mocks reach fluxes below 1E-20 erg s-1 cm-2 in the 0.5-2 keV band, i.e., more than an order of magnitude below the predicted limits of future deep fields, and therefore represent an important tool for simulating extragalactic X-ray surveys with both current and future telescopes. We use our mocks to perform a set of end-to-end simulations of X-ray surveys with the forthcoming Athena mission and with the AXIS probe, a sub-arcsecond resolution X-ray mission concept proposed to the Astro 2020 Decadal Survey. We find that these proposed, next generation surveys may transform our knowledge of the deep X-ray Universe. As an example, in a total observing time of 15\,Ms, AXIS would detect ~225,000 AGNs and ~$50,000 non-active galaxies, reaching a flux limit f_0.5-2~5E-19 erg/s/cm2 in the 0.5-2 keV band, with an improvement of over an order of magnitude with respect to surveys with current X-ray facilities. Consequently, 90% of these sources would be detected for the first time in the X-rays. Furthermore, we show that deep and wide X-ray surveys with instruments like AXIS and Athena are expected to detect ~20,000 z>3 AGNs and ~250 sources at redshift z>6, thus opening a new window of knowledge on the evolution of AGNs over cosmic time and putting strong constraints on the predictions of theoretical models of black hole seed accretion in the early universe., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures. By using a large highly obscured ($N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}\ \rm cm^{-2}$) AGN sample (294 sources at $z \sim 0-5$) selected from detailed X-ray spectral analyses in the deepest Chandra surveys, we explore distributions of these X-ray sources in various optical/IR/X-ray color-color diagrams and their host-galaxy properties, aiming at characterizing the nuclear obscuration environment and the triggering mechanism of highly obscured AGNs. We find that the refined IRAC color-color diagram fails to identify the majority of X-ray selected highly obscured AGNs, even for the most luminous sources with ${\rm log}\,L_{\rm X}\, \rm (erg\ s^{-1}) > 44$. Over 80% of our sources will not be selected as heavily obscured candidates using the flux ratio of $f_{\rm 24 \mu m}\, /\,f_R > 1000$ and $R - K > 4.5$ criteria, implying complex origins and conditions for the obscuring materials that are responsible for the heavy X-ray obscuration. The average star formation rate of highly obscured AGNs is similar to that of stellar mass- ($M_*$-) and $z$-controlled normal galaxies, while the lack of quiescent hosts is observed for the former. Partial correlation analyses imply that highly obscured AGN activity (traced by $L_{\rm X}$) appears to be more fundamentally related to $M_*$, and no dependence of $N_{\rm H}$ on either $M_*$ or SFR is detected. Morphology analyses reveal that 61% of our sources have a significant disk component, while only 27% of them exhibit irregular morphological signatures. The SINFONI survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER) aims at tracing and characterizing ionized gas outflows and their impact on star formation in a statistical sample of X-ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at z$\sim$2. We present the first SINFONI results for a sample of 21 Type-1 AGN spanning a wide range in bolometric luminosity (log $\mathrm{L_{bol}}$ = 45.4-47.9 erg/s). The main aims of this paper are determining the extension of the ionized gas, characterizing the occurrence of AGN-driven outflows, and linking the properties of such outflows with those of the AGN. We use Adaptive Optics-assisted SINFONI observations to trace ionized gas in the extended narrow line region using the [OIII]5007 line. We classify a target as hosting an outflow if its non-parametric velocity of the [OIII] line, $\mathrm{w_{80}}$, is larger than 600 km/s. We study the presence of extended emission using dedicated point-spread function (PSF) observations, after modelling the PSF from the Balmer lines originating from the Broad Line Region. We detect outflows in all the Type-1 AGN sample based on the $\mathrm{w_{80}}$ value from the integrated spectrum, which is in the range 650-2700 km/s. There is a clear positive correlation between $\mathrm{w_{80}}$ and the AGN bolometric luminosity (99% correlation probability), but a weaker correlation with the black hole mass (80% correlation probability). A comparison of the PSF and the [OIII] radial profile shows that the [OIII] emission is spatially resolved for $\sim$35% of the Type-1 sample and the outflows show an extension up to $\sim$6 kpc. The relation between maximum velocity and the bolometric luminosity is consistent with model predictions for shocks from an AGN driven outflow. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the quadruply lensed z=1.51 quasar HS 0810+2554 which provide useful insight on the kinematics and morphology of the CO molecular gas and the ~2 mm continuum emission in the quasar host galaxy. Lens modeling of the mm-continuum and the spectrally integrated CO(3-2) images indicates that the source of the mm-continuum has an eccentricity of e~0.9 with a size of ~1.6 kpc and the source of line emission has an eccentricity of e~0.7 with a size of ~1 kpc. The spatially integrated emission of the CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) lines shows a triple peak structure with the outer peaks separated by Dv_21 = 220 +\- 19 km s^-1 and Dv_32 = 245 +/- 28 km s^-1, respectively, suggesting the presence of rotating molecular CO line emitting gas. Lensing inversion of the high spatial resolution images confirms the presence of rotation of the line emitting gas. Assuming a conversion factor of alpha_CO = 0.8 M_solar (K km s^-1 pc^2)^-1 we find the molecular gas mass of HS 0810+2554 to be M _ Mol = [(5.2 +/- 1.5)/mu_32] x10^10 M_solar, where mu_32 is the magnification of the CO(3-2) emission. We report the possible detection, at the 3.0 - 4.7 sigma confidence level, of shifted CO(3-2) emission lines of high-velocity clumps of CO emission with velocities up to 1702 km s^-1. We present X-ray spectra of 185 bright sources detected in the XMM-Newton deep survey of the Chandra Deep Field South, combining the three EPIC cameras. The 2-10 keV flux limit of the sample is 2e-15 erg/s/cm2. The sources are distributed over a redshift range of z=0.1-3.8. Eleven new X-ray redshift measurements are included. A spectral analysis was performed using a simple model to obtain absorbing column densities, rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosities and Fe K line properties of 180 sources at z>0.4. Obscured AGN are found to be more abundant toward higher redshifts. Using the XMM-Newton data alone, seven Compton-thick AGN candidates are identified, which makes the Compton-thick AGN fraction to be ~4%. An exploratory spectral inspection method with two rest-frame X-ray colours and an Fe line strength indicator is introduced and tested against the results from spectral fitting. This method works reasonably well to characterise a spectral shape and can be useful for a pre-selection of Compton-thick AGN candidates. We found six objects exhibiting broad Fe K lines out of 21 unobscured AGN of best data quality, implying a detection rate of ~30%. Five redshift spikes, each of which has more than six sources, are identified in the redshift distribution of the X-ray sources. We present the X-ray source catalog for the 479 ks Chandra exposure of the SDSS J1030+0524 field, that is centered on a region that shows the best evidence to date of an overdensity around a z > 6 quasar, and also includes a galaxy overdensity around a Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II radio galaxy at z = 1.7. Using wavdetect for initial source detection and ACIS Extract for source photometry and significance assessment, we create preliminary catalogs of sources that are detected in the full, soft, and hard bands, respectively. We produce X-ray simulations that mirror our Chandra observation to filter our preliminary catalogs and get a completeness level of > 91% and a reliability level of 95% in each band. The catalogs in the three bands are then matched into a final main catalog of 256 unique sources. Among them, 244, 193, and 208 are detected in the full, soft, and hard bands, respectively. This makes J1030 field the fifth deepest extragalactic X-ray survey to date. The field is part of the Multiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC), and is also covered by optical imaging data from the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) at the Large Binocular Telescope, near-IR imaging data from the Canada France Hawaii Telescope WIRCam, and Spitzer IRAC. Thanks to its dense multi-wavelength coverage, J1030 represents a legacy field for the study of large-scale structures around distant accreting supermassive black holes. Using a likelihood ratio analysis, we associate multi-band counterparts for 252 (98.4%) of the 256 Chandra sources, with an estimated reliability of 95%. Finally, we compute the cumulative number of sources in each X-ray band, finding that they are in general agreement with the results from the Chandra Deep Fields., Comment: A&A in press, 20 pages, 15 figures. Hyperluminous quasars ($L_{\rm bol}\gtrsim 10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$) are ideal laboratories to study the interaction and impact of extreme radiative field and the most powerful winds in the AGN nuclear regions. They typically exhibit low coronal X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$) compared to the UV and MIR radiative outputs ($L_{\rm UV}$ and $L_{\rm MIR}$) with a non-negligible fraction of them reporting even $\sim$1 dex weaker $L_{\rm X}$ compared to the prediction of the well established $L_{\rm X}$-$L_{\rm UV}$ and $L_{\rm X}$-$L_{\rm MIR}$ relations followed by the bulk of the AGN population. We report in our WISE/SDSS-selected Hyperluminous (WISSH) $z=2-4$ broad-line quasar sample, the discovery of a dependence between the intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity ($L_{\rm 2-10}$) and the blueshifted velocity of the CIV emission line ($v_{\rm CIV}$) indicative of accretion disc winds. In particular, sources with fastest winds ($v_{\rm CIV}\gtrsim 3000~\rm km s^{-1}$) possess $\sim$0.5-1 dex lower $L_{\rm 2-10}$ than sources with negligible $v_{\rm CIV}$. No similar dependence is found on $L_{\rm UV}$, $L_{\rm MIR}$, $L_{\rm bol}$, photon index and absorption column density. We interpret these findings in the context of accretion disc wind models. Both magnetohydrodynamic and line-driven models can qualitatively explain the reported relations as a consequence of X-ray shielding from the inner wind regions. In case of line-driven winds, the launch of fast winds is favoured by a reduced X-ray emission, and we speculate that these winds may play a role in directly limiting the coronal hard X-ray production., Comment: 10 pages (including Appendix), 4 figures. State-of-the-art models of massive black hole formation postulate that quasars at $z>6$ reside in extreme peaks of the cosmic density structure in the early universe. Even so, direct observational evidence of these overdensities is elusive, especially on large scales ($\gg$1 Mpc) as the spectroscopic follow-up of $z>6$ galaxies is observationally expensive. Here we present Keck / DEIMOS optical and IRAM / NOEMA millimeter spectroscopy of a $z\sim6$ Lyman-break galaxy candidate originally discovered via broadband selection, at a projected separation of 4.65 physical Mpc (13.94 arcmin) from the luminous $z$=6.308 quasar J1030+0524. This well-studied field presents the strongest indication to date of a large-scale overdensity around a $z>6$ quasar. The Keck observations suggest a $z\sim6.3$ dropout identification of the galaxy. The NOEMA 1.2mm spectrum shows a 3.5$\sigma$ line that, if interpreted as [CII], would place the galaxy at $z$=6.318 (i.e., at a line-of-sight separation of 3.9 comoving Mpc assuming that relative proper motion is negligible). The measured [CII] luminosity is $3\times10^8$ L$_\odot$, in line with expectations for a galaxy with a star formation rate $\sim15$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, as inferred from the rest-frame UV photometry. Our combined observations place the galaxy at the same redshift as the quasar, thus strengthening the overdensity scenario for this $z>6$ quasar. We report the discovery of a galaxy overdensity around a Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II (FRII) radio galaxy at z=1.7 in the deep multiband survey around the z=6.3 QSO SDSS J1030+0524. Based on a 6hr VLT/MUSE and on a 4hr LBT/LUCI observation, we identify at least eight galaxy members in this structure with spectroscopic redshift z=1.687-1.699, including the FRII galaxy at z=1.699. Most of the identified overdensity members are blue, compact galaxies that are actively forming stars at rates of $\sim$8-60 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. Based on a 500ks Chandra ACIS-I observation we found that the FRII nucleus hosts a luminous QSO ($L_{2-10keV}=1.3\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, intrinsic and rest-frame) that is obscured by Compton-thick absorption ($N_H=1.5\pm0.6\times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$). Our Chandra observation, the deepest so far for a distant FRII within a galaxy overdensity, revealed significant diffuse X-ray emission within the region covered by the overdensity. In particular, X-ray emission extending for $\sim$240 kpc is found around the Eastern lobe of the FRII. Four out of the six MUSE star forming galaxies in the overdensity are distributed in an arc-like shape at the edge of this diffuse X-ray emission. The probability of observing by chance four out of the six $z=1.7$ sources at the edge of the diffuse emission is negligible. In addition, these four galaxies have the highest specific star formation rates of the MUSE galaxies in the overdensity and lie above the main sequence of field galaxies of equal stellar mass at z=1.7. We propose that the diffuse X-rays originate from an expanding bubble of gas that is shock-heated by the FRII jet, and that star formation is promoted by the compression of the cold interstellar medium of the galaxies around the bubble, which may be remarkable evidence of positive AGN feedback on cosmological scales. X-ray emission from QSOs has been used to assess SMBH accretion properties up to $z$~6. However, at $z>6$ only ~15 QSOs are covered by sensitive X-ray observations, preventing a statistically significant investigation of the X-ray properties of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe. We present new Chandra observations of 10 $z>6$ QSOs, selected to have virial black-hole mass estimates from Mg II line spectroscopy. Adding archival X-ray data for an additional 15 $z>6$ QSOs, we investigate the X-ray properties of the QSO population in the first Gyr of the Universe, focusing in particular on the $L_{UV}-L_{X}$ relation, which is traced by the $\alpha_{ox}$ parameter, and the shape of their X-ray spectra. We performed photometric analyses to derive estimates of the X-ray luminosities, and thus the $\alpha_{ox}$ values and bolometric corrections ($K_{bol}=L_{bol}/L_{X}$). We compared the resulting $\alpha_{ox}$ and $K_{bol}$ distributions with the results found for QSO samples at lower redshift. Finally, we performed a basic X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest $z>6$ QSOs to derive their individual photon indices, and joint spectral analysis of the whole sample to estimate the average photon index. We confirm a lack of significant evolution of $\alpha_{ox}$ with redshift, extending the results from previous works up to $z>6$, and the trend of an increasing bolometric correction with increasing luminosity found for QSOs at lower redshifts. The average power-law photon index of our sample ($\Gamma=2.20_{-0.34}^{+0.39}$ and $\Gamma=2.13_{-0.13}^{+0.13}$ for sources with $<30$ and $>30$ net counts, respectively) is slightly steeper than, but still consistent with, typical QSOs at $z=1-6$. All these results point toward a lack of substantial evolution of the inner accretion-disk/hot-corona structure in QSOs from low redshift to $z>6$. We present the joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton spectral analysis in the 0.6-70 keV band of three candidate Compton thick (CT-) AGN selected in the 100-month Swift-BAT catalog. These objects were previously classified as CT-AGNs based on low quality Swift-XRT and Swift-BAT data, and had soft photon indices (Gamma>2.2) that suggested a potential overestimation of the line of sight column density. Thanks to the high-quality NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data we were able to determine that in all three objects the photon index was significantly overestimated, and two out of three sources are reclassified from CT to Compton thin, confirming a previously observed trend, i.e., that a significant fraction of BAT-selected, candidate CT-AGNs with poor soft X-ray data are reclassified as Compton thin when the NuSTAR data are added to the fit. Finally, thanks to both the good XMM-Newton spatial resolution and the high NuSTAR and XMM-Newton spectral quality, we found that the third object in our sample was associated to the wrong counterpart: the correct one, 2MASX J10331570+5252182, has redshift z=0.14036, which makes it one of the very few candidate CT-AGNs in the 100-month BAT catalog detected at z>0.1, and a rare CT quasar., Comment: 12 Pages, 4 Figures. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) hosting disk water megamasers are well known to be obscured by large amounts of gas, likely due to the presence along the line of sight of an almost edge-on disky structure orbiting the supermassive black hole. Correcting for the high obscuration is crucial to infer parameters intrinsic to the source, like its luminosity. We present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of a water megamaser AGN in an early merger (NGC 5765B), combining Chandra and NuSTAR data. NGC 5765B is highly Compton-thick and reflection-dominated, following the general trend among disk megamasers. Combining the exquisite black hole mass from masers with our X-ray spectroscopy, the Eddington ratio of the megamaser is estimated to be in the $2-14\%$ range, and its robustness is confirmed through SED fitting., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures.
