A new monotypic genus of Prodidominae, Paleotoca gen. n., is proposed to include one cave species collected in a paleoburrow and ferruginous caves from Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Minas Gerais, Brazil: Paleotoca diminassp. n. (♂♀). The new genus is closely related to other Neotropical Prodidominae by sharing the classic claw tuft clasper. Paleotoca gen. n. is diagnosed by the absence of a dorsal abdominal scutum, a ventral parallel rows of strong spines on the tibia and metatarsus I–II, a lack of a conductor, a discrete median apophysis on the bulb and a bifid retrolateral tibial apophysis in the male palp, a posterior extension that is beak-shaped, and folds of a copulatory duct ventrally visible in the female epigyne. Like other Prodidominae species from caves, P. diminassp. n. is a troglobitic spider with morphological characteristics that indicate specialization to live in subterranean environments, including reduction in cuticular pigments, eye loss, heavy spination and trichobothria.

Primary school pupils with hearing impairment face various obstacles to their academic and personal growth. The main aim of the study was to reveal the impact of the use of gamification methods on the mathematic achievement of primary school pupils with hearing impairment. This study used a pretest/posttest experimental strategy. The experiment was carried out in three stages. During the first stage, all participants’ mathematical achievement level was measured and their mathematical progress was monitored. In the second stage, three game methods were applied to the experimental group consistently, according to pre-prepared lesson plans. The content of games methods was developed considering the topics, goals and expected results of the lessons. In the third stage, the impact of the game methods on first grade primary school hearing impaired pupils’ achievement was assessed. Findings identified significant changes in the achievements of the experimental group. The implementation of gamification methods in mathematics lessons for first grade primary school pupils with hearing impairment resulted in a statistically significant improvement in the pupils’ knowledge of numbers, calculations, geometry, measurements, and measurement, as well as in the level of higher-order thinking skills, knowledge, and understanding, i.e., from satisfactory to basic and advanced levels in the experimental group.

This study investigated the psychosocial adjustment and anxiety of adolescents during a 7-month exercise intervention programme. In addition, extensive research on the psychosocial adjustment of adolescents during intense physical activity was performed. The experimental group included adolescent girls (n = 110) and boys (n = 107) aged between 14 and 15 years while the control group included adolescent girls (n = 99) and boys (n = 112) of the same age group attending the same school. The girls and boys in the EG participated in modified physical education lessons two times a week. Once a month they received a theory class where they were taught about communication disorders of adolescents and ways of preventing them by means of physical activities. In practical classes, the girls and boys in the EG had sports and games (basketball, volleyball and football) as well as Pilates, enhancing physical abilities. The measurement of psychosocial adjustment included the modification method developed by Roger and Daimond. The measurement of anxiety, the methodology of Reynolds and Richmond. In summarising the results of the 7-month exercise intervention programme of enhancing psychosocial adjustment and its components (self-esteem, dominance, positive self-evaluation, emotional comfort, internality, and evaluation by others) and decrease in anxiety in physical education lessons, we can state that after the intervention there are certain tendencies towards improved psychosocial adjustment that assists in overcoming various critical situations.

Background: The World Health Organization recommends that children should participate in sufficient PA by engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for at least 60 min daily per week. Schools are important settings for the promotion of children's physical activity. Through commuting, break times, and physical education lessons they provide regular opportunities for children to be active. Methods: The experimental group included 26 girls and 24 boys aged 6-7 years old, and the control group included adolescent girls (n=25) and boys (n=23). The experimental group included 26 girls 24 boys aged 6-7 years old. Their mean weight and height were 24.3±0.9 kg and 1.25±0.11 m for the girls, and 29.3±0.6 kg and 1.33±0.09 m for the boys. The control group included 25 girls and 23 boys aged 6-7 years old, attending the same school. Their mean weight and height were 22.3±0.7 kg and 1.24±0.1 m for the girls, and 28.4±0.7 kg and 1.36±0.07 m for the boys. The methodology of innovative physical education classes was based on the DIDSFA model (dynamic exercise, intense motor skills repetition, differentiation, reduction of parking and seating, physical activity distribution in the classroom). The testing of physical fitness: The flexibility test, the long jump test, 3 × 10 m speed shuttle run test, a medical (stuffed) 1 kg ball pushing from the chest test. The evaluation of physical activity: Children's Physical Activity Questionnaire (Corder et al., 2009) was used. It was also based on the Children's Leisure Activities Study Survey (CLASS) questionnaire. Results: Experimental group (EG) (boys and girls) post-test results physical fitness (PF) tests, it turned out that the results of the long jump test ranged from 106.3 cm (girls) to 120.1 cm (boys), statistically significant differences were detected (p < 0.05). The girls (2.93 m) performed worse than the boys (3.64 m) (p < 0.05) in the medical (stuffed) 1 kg ball pushing from the chest test. The best score of the girls' 3 × 10 m speed shuttle run test was 8.55 s, for boys it was 8.8 s, the worst performance time for boys was 13.52 s, for girls 13.22 s (p < 0.05). Comparing the results of boys' and girls' flexibility, there were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05): the girls' flexibility was about 0.06 cm, for boys -1.8 cm. The post-test of the experimental group boys (1261.93 MET, min/week) was to analyze average physical activity in comparison with the girls of the experimental group (737.48 MET, min/week). Statistically significant difference was found during the analysis of average MET per boy (1390.45 MET, min/week) in comparison with the girls (880.27 MET, min/week, p<0.05). Conclusion: Established that the properly construed and purposefully applied complex of the 8-month exercise intervention programme for first grade students caused the statistically significant changes in the dependent variables: increased physical activity and physical fitness for experimental group.

How a disease is transmitted affects our ability to determine R₀, the average number of new cases caused by an infectious host at the onset of an epidemic. R₀ becomes progressively more difficult to compute as transmission varies from directly transmitted diseases to diseases that are vector-borne to environmentally transmitted diseases. Pathogens responsible for diseases with environmental transmission are typically maintained in environmental reservoirs that exhibit a complex spatial distribution of local infectious zones (LIZs). Understanding host encounters with LIZs and pathogen persistence within LIZs is required for an accurate R₀ and modeling these contacts requires an integrated geospatial and dynamical systems approach. Here we review how interactions between host and pathogen populations and environmental reservoirs are driven by landscape-level variables, and synthesize the quantitative framework needed to formulate outbreak response and disease control.

Parabatinga danielae sp. n. is described and illustrated based on material collected in caves of the Carajás region, state of Pará, Brazilian Amazonia. With the inclusion of the second species in the genus, we propose here a new diagnosis for Parabatinga and its type species, P. brevipes (Keyserling, 1891).

Environmentally transmitted diseases are comparatively poorly understood and managed, and their ecology is particularly understudied. Here we identify challenges of studying environmental transmission and persistence with a six-sided interdisciplinary review of the biology of anthrax (Bacillus anthracis). Anthrax is a zoonotic disease capable of maintaining infectious spore banks in soil for decades (or even potentially centuries), and the mechanisms of its environmental persistence have been the topic of significant research and controversy. Where anthrax is endemic, it plays an important ecological role, shaping the dynamics of entire herbivore communities. The complex eco-epidemiology of anthrax, and the mysterious biology of Bacillus anthracis during its environmental stage, have necessitated an interdisciplinary approach to pathogen research. Here, we illustrate different disciplinary perspectives through key advances made by researchers working in Etosha National Park, a long-term ecological research site in Namibia that has exemplified the complexities of the enzootic process of anthrax over decades of surveillance. In Etosha, the role of scavengers and alternative routes (waterborne transmission and flies) has proved unimportant relative to the long-term persistence of anthrax spores in soil and their infection of herbivore hosts. Carcass deposition facilitates green-ups of vegetation to attract herbivores, potentially facilitated by the role of anthrax spores in the rhizosphere. The underlying seasonal pattern of vegetation, and herbivores' immune and behavioural responses to anthrax risk, interact to produce regular 'anthrax seasons' that appear to be a stable feature of the Etosha ecosystem. Through the lens of microbiologists, geneticists, immunologists, ecologists, epidemiologists, and clinicians, we discuss how anthrax dynamics are shaped at the smallest scale by population genetics and interactions within the bacterial communities up to the broadest scales of ecosystem structure. We illustrate the benefits and challenges of this interdisciplinary approach to disease ecology, and suggest ways anthrax might offer insights into the biology of other important pathogens. Bacillus anthracis, and the more recently emerged Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis, share key features with other environmentally transmitted pathogens, including several zoonoses and panzootics of special interest for global health and conservation efforts. Understanding the dynamics of anthrax, and developing interdisciplinary research programs that explore environmental persistence, is a critical step forward for understanding these emerging threats.

Four new species of the spider genus Ochyrocera Fage, 1912 are described from iron caves in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Here we present the third anophtalmic and depigmented species of the genus, O. dorinha sp. nov., and three other depigmented species: O. monica sp. nov., O. magali sp. nov. and O. rosinha sp. nov. Only O. dorinha sp. nov. and O. rosinha sp. nov. are considered as troglobites due the ocular reduction or anophthalmia and elongated appendages, two troglomorphic features absent in the other species described.

Climate change is a well-documented driver of both wildlife extinction and disease emergence, but the negative impacts of climate change on parasite diversity are undocumented. We compiled the most comprehensive spatially explicit data set available for parasites, projected range shifts in a changing climate, and estimated extinction rates for eight major parasite clades. On the basis of 53,133 occurrences capturing the geographic ranges of 457 parasite species, conservative model projections suggest that 5 to 10% of these species are committed to extinction by 2070 from climate-driven habitat loss alone. We find no evidence that parasites with zoonotic potential have a significantly higher potential to gain range in a changing climate, but we do find that ectoparasites (especially ticks) fare disproportionately worse than endoparasites. Accounting for host-driven coextinctions, models predict that up to 30% of parasitic worms are committed to extinction, driven by a combination of direct and indirect pressures. Despite high local extinction rates, parasite richness could still increase by an order of magnitude in some places, because species successfully tracking climate change invade temperate ecosystems and replace native species with unpredictable ecological consequences.

The first two anophthalmic species of spiders of the genus Ochyrocera Simon, 1892, are described for caves located in the iron formation of Floresta Nacional (FLONA) de Carajás in southeastern Pará State, Brazil. The caves are located in the municipalities of Parauapebas and Canaã dos Carajás, in the eastern portion of the Amazon Forest domain. Ochyrocera ritxoco sp. nov. and O. ritxoo sp. nov. are described based on males and females. The species have similar body characteristics with the total absence of eyes and complete depigmentation, characteristics that indicate possible evolution in subterranean environments , and thus are classified as troglobites. Each species is associated with a single geomorphological unit (mountain range), with Ochyrocera ritxoco sp. nov. being restricted to caves of Serra Norte (North Mountain) and O. ritxoo sp. nov. to caves of Serra Sul (South Mountain). Both species were collected in aphotic zones of the caves. Small and tangled webs of O. ritxoco sp. nov. were observed under blocks of stone in the soil or in cracks of the walls.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common cardiac rhythm disturbance, often treated via electrical cardioversion. Following rhythm restoration, a period of depressed mechanical function known as atrial stunning occurs, suggesting that defects in contractility occur in AFib and are revealed upon restoration of rhythm. This project aims to define the contractile remodeling that occurs in AFib. To assess contractile function, we used a canine atrial tachypacing model of induced AFib. Mass spectrometry analysis showed dysregulation of contractile proteins in samples from AFib compared with sinus rhythm atria. Atrial cardiomyocytes show reduced force of contraction, decreased resting tension, and increased calcium sensitivity in skinned single cardiomyocyte studies. These alterations correlated with degradation of myofilament proteins including myosin heavy chain altering force of contraction, titin altering resting tension, and troponin I altering calcium sensitivity. We measured degradation of other myofilament proteins, including cardiac myosin binding protein C and actinin, that show degradation products in the AFib samples that are absent in the sinus rhythm atria. Many of the degradation products appeared as discrete cleavage products that are generated by calpain proteolysis. We assessed calpain activity and found it to be significantly increased. These results provide an understanding of the contractile remodeling that occurs in AFib and provide insight into the molecular explanation for atrial stunning and the increased risk of atrial thrombus and stroke in AFib. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac rhythm disorder, and remodeling during atrial fibrillation is highly variable between patients. This study has defined the biophysical changes in contractility that occur in atrial fibrillation along with identifying potential molecular mechanisms that may drive this remodeling. This includes proteolysis of several myofilament proteins including titin, troponin I, myosin heavy chain, myosin binding protein C, and actinin, which is consistent with the observed contractile deficits. Sex hormones, reproductive status, and pathogen load all affect stress. Together with stress, these factors can modulate the immune system and affect disease incidence. Thus, it is important to concurrently measure these factors, along with their seasonal fluctuations, to better understand their complex interactions. Using steroid hormone metabolites from fecal samples, we examined seasonal correlations among zebra and springbok stress, reproduction, gastrointestinal (GI) parasite infections, and anthrax infection signatures in zebra and springbok in Etosha National Park (ENP), Namibia, and found strong seasonal effects. Infection intensities of all three GI macroparasites examined (strongyle helminths, Strongyloides helminths, and Eimeria coccidia) were highest in the wet season, concurrent with the timing of anthrax outbreaks. Parasites also declined with increased acquired immune responses. We found hormonal evidence that both mares and ewes are overwhelmingly seasonal breeders in ENP, and that reproductive hormones are correlated with immunosuppression and higher susceptibility to GI parasite infections. Stress hormones largely peak in the dry season, particularly in zebra, when parasite infection intensities are lowest, and are most strongly correlated with host mid-gestation rather than with parasite infection intensity. Given the evidence that GI parasites can cause host pathology, immunomodulation, and immunosuppression, their persistence in ENP hosts without inducing chronic stress responses supports the hypothesis that hosts are tolerant of their parasites. Such tolerance would help to explain the ubiquity of these organisms in ENP herbivores, even in the face of their potential immunomodulatory trade-offs with anti-anthrax immunity.

BackgroundMost vertebrates experience coinfections, and many pathogen-pathogen interactions occur indirectly through the host immune system. These interactions are particularly strong in mixed micro-macroparasite infections because of immunomodulatory effects of helminth parasites. While these trade-offs have been examined extensively in laboratory animals, few studies have examined them in natural systems. Additionally, many wildlife pathogens fluctuate seasonally, at least partly due to seasonal host immune changes. We therefore examined seasonality of immune resource allocation, pathogen abundance and exposure, and interactions between infections and immunity in plains zebra (Equus quagga) in Etosha National Park (ENP), Namibia, a system with strongly seasonal patterns of gastrointestinal (GI) helminth infection intensity and concurrent anthrax outbreaks. Both pathogens are environmentally transmitted, and helminth seasonality is driven by environmental pressures on free living life stages. The reasons behind anthrax seasonality are currently not understood, though anthrax is less likely directly driven by environmental factors.ResultsWe measured a complex, interacting set of variables and found evidence that GI helminth infection intensities, eosinophil counts, IgE and IgGb antibody titers, and possibly IL-4 cytokine signaling were increased in wetter seasons, and that ectoparasite infestations and possibly IFN-γ cytokine signaling were increased in drier seasons. Monocyte counts and anti-anthrax antibody titers were negatively associated with wet season eosinophilia, and monocytes were negatively correlated with IgGb and IgE titers. Taken together, this supports the hypothesis that ENP wet seasons are characterized by immune resource allocation toward Th-2 type responses, while Th1-type immunity may prevail in drier seasons, and that hosts may experience Th1-Th2 trade-offs. We found evidence that this Th2-type resource allocation is likely driven by GI parasite infections, and that these trade-offs may render hosts less capable of concurrently mounting effective Th1-type immune responses against anthrax.ConclusionsThis study is one of the first to examine laboratory-demonstrated Th1-Th2 trade-offs in a natural system. It provides evidence that seasonally bound pathogens may affect, through immunology, transmission dynamics of pathogens that might otherwise not be seasonally distributed. It suggests that, by manipulating the internal host ecosystem, GI parasites may influence the external ecosystem by affecting the dynamics of another environmentally transmitted pathogen.

Few studies have examined host-pathogen interactions in wildlife from an immunological perspective, particularly in the context of seasonal and longitudinal dynamics. In addition, though most ecological immunology studies employ serological antibody assays, endpoint titre determination is usually based on subjective criteria and needs to be made more objective. Despite the fact that anthrax is an ancient and emerging zoonotic infectious disease found world-wide, its natural ecology is not well understood. In particular, little is known about the adaptive immune responses of wild herbivore hosts against Bacillus anthracis. Working in the natural anthrax system of Etosha National Park, Namibia, we collected 154 serum samples from plains zebra (Equus quagga), 21 from springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) and 45 from African elephants (Loxodonta africana) over 2-3 years, resampling individuals when possible for seasonal and longitudinal comparisons. We used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to measure anti-anthrax antibody titres and developed three increasingly conservative models to determine endpoint titres with more rigourous, objective mensuration. Between 52 and 87% of zebra, 0-15% of springbok and 3-52% of elephants had measurable anti-anthrax antibody titres, depending on the model used. While the ability of elephants and springbok to mount anti-anthrax adaptive immune responses is still equivocal, our results indicate that zebra in ENP often survive sublethal anthrax infections, encounter most B. anthracis in the wet season and can partially booster their immunity to B. anthracis. Thus, rather than being solely a lethal disease, anthrax often occurs as a sublethal infection in some susceptible hosts. Though we found that adaptive immunity to anthrax wanes rapidly, subsequent and frequent sublethal B. anthracis infections cause maturation of anti-anthrax immunity. By triggering host immune responses, these common sublethal infections may act as immunomodulators and affect population dynamics through indirect immunological and co-infection effects. In addition, with our three endpoint titre models, we introduce more mensuration rigour into serological antibody assays, even under the often-restrictive conditions that come with adapting laboratory immunology methods to wild systems. With these methods, we identified significantly more zebras responding immunologically to anthrax than have previous studies using less comprehensive titre analyses.

The family Microstigmatidae is composed of two subfamilies, Microstigmatinae and Micromygalinae, seven genera and 16 species. Micromygalinae is monotypic, comprising the species Micromygale diblemma Platnick & Forster, 1982 from Panama. A new genus, Tonton is described as a new member of the Micromygalinae. Masteria emboaba Pedroso, Baptista & Bertani, 2015, is transferred to the new genus and six new species from Brazil are described and attributed to Tonton gen. n.: the type species, T. itabirito sp. n., T. queca sp. n., T. matodentro sp. n. and T. sapalo sp. n., all from the state of Minas Gerais; T. ipiau sp. n. from the state of Bahia and T. quiteria sp. n. from the state of Maranhão. Among the cavernicolous species, only T. itabirito sp. n. is considered troglobitic by the total absence of eyes.

Cognitive skills predict academic performance, so schools that try to improve academic performance might also improve cognitive skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of achievements in mathematics on cognitive ability in primary school. Methods: Participants: 100 girls and 102 boys aged 9–10 years (the fourth grade) were selected from three schools. A diagnostic test of cognitive abilities (DTCA) was created by the authors of the article for the assessment of primary school students’ cognitive abilities. The diagnostic cognitive ability test was based on Reuven Feuerstein’s theory of dynamic cognitive modality assessment, the problem-solving model, and followed the mathematics curriculum for grade 4. The tasks of the test were distributed according to the cognitive function: systematic exploration, spatial orientation, sequencing, image recognition, recognizing and understanding relationships, collecting and processing information, algorithm development, data management (classification), and construction of combinations. Achievements in mathematics: they were collected systematically using short- and medium-term mathematics tests, and the levels of achaievement were defined of grade 4 primary school students to assess individual learner performance, anticipate their learning strengths and weaknesses, and shape their subsequent learning process. Results: With regard to the relationships between cognitive functions and achievement level, Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed the relationships between the following cognitive functions: systematic exploration and spatial orientation (Spearman q = 0.276, p = 0.022), systematic exploration and designing an algorithm development (Spearman q = 0.351, p = 0.003), spatial orientation and data management (Spearman q = 0.274, p = 0.023), sequencing and combination construction (Spearman q = 0.275, p = 0.022), and sequencing and recognizing and understanding relationships (Spearman q = 0.243, p = 0.044). Conclusions: (1) The internal validity of the diagnostic test of cognitive abilities was supported by significant correlations between cognitive functions and mathematics achievement. This suggests that this methodology of the diagnostic cognitive ability test can be used to assess the cognitive abilities of primary school students. (2) The diagnostic test of cognitive abilities showed that the majority of primary school students reached higher levels of achievement in a systematic inquiry (systematic, non-impulsive, planned behavior when collecting data or checking information). A difference was observed in the ability of students to navigate in space and follow directions for primary school students at a satisfactory or higher level. Primary school students’ performance in identifying the rule for the sequencing of elements, finding missing elements, and extending the sequences was at the basic and advanced levels. (3) The results of the study showed the reciprocal correlation between achievements in mathematics and cognitive function of primary school students. The two phases that caused difficulties for students were revealed: understanding the problem and carrying out the plan phase.

Background and objectives. Systematic pelvic lymphadenectomy (LND) is an essential part of lymph-node status evaluation in endometrial cancer (EC) patients to tailor the adjuvant treatment. However, it is associated with the post-operative lymphatic complications and does not improve the outcomes of the disease. Indocyanine green (ICG) mapped sentinel lymph-node biopsy (SLB) has recently been introduced into the clinical practice as an alternative for the surgical lymph-node evaluation in EC patients with the potential to decrease LND related complications. The aim of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of ICG mapped SLB in low, intermediate, and high-risk EC patients in a center with no previous experience on endoscopic SLB procedure. Materials and Methods: The prospective study was performed. 170 patients with histologically confirmed EC were included. Sentinel lymph-nodes (SLs) were mapped with ICG dye and removed ahead of the total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Low-risk patients received only SLB, while SLB and LND were performed for intermediate and high-risk patients. Results: The overall detection rate of SLs was 88.8%. Bilateral mapping was achieved in 68.2% of the patients. The overall detection rate for low-risk patients was 93.7%, 85.0% for the intermediate-risk group, and 100% for high-risk patients (p = 0.232). The most common anatomical sites of SLs were the external iliac (45.8% on the right and 46.6% on the left) and obturator regions (20.9% and 25.6%, respectively). Positive lymph-nodes were found in 8 (4.7%) patients. The sensitivity of SLB was 75.0% and negative predictive value (NPV)—97.2%. Conclusions: Even in the center with no previous experience, sentinel lymph-node biopsy using ICG mapping is feasible. However, the favorable outcomes might be associated with the learning process of newly established method.

Three new species of the genus Plato from caves in the states of Pará and Minas Gerais, Brazil, are described. P. novalima sp. n., from Minas Gerais, is the first record of the genus in the southeastern region of Brazil. P. ferriferus sp. n. and P. striatus sp. n., from Carajás, Pará, north of Brazil, are also described. The former is an extremely abundant species, whereas the latter has only one known male specimen. Cuacuba gen. n. is proposed and represented by two new species, C. mariana sp. n. (type species) and C. morrodopilar sp. n., both from the state of Minas Gerais. Morphology of genitalia in Cuacuba gen. n. is similar to other Theridiosomatidae genera and is herein discussed. None of the proposed species presents troglomorphic adaptations. They are widespread, abundant inside caves in different and large karst areas, and each genus prefers different lithologies.

Seven new species of the spider genus Ochyrocera from cave areas in Floresta Nacional de Carajás (state of Pará, northern Brazil) are described: Ochyrocera varys sp. n., Ochyrocera atlachnacha sp. n., Ochyrocera laracna sp. n., Ochyrocera aragogue sp. n., Ochyrocera misspider sp. n., Ochyrocera charlotte sp. n., and Ochyrocera ungoliant sp. n. Two groups of the species are discussed, the quinquivittata group that include specimens with an apparently bifid retrolateral apophysis in the cymbium of the male palp and the arietina group, here proposed, that include those specimens with an entire cymbium, with no retrolateral apophysis, in the male palp. Although these species were abundant inside caves, the examined specimens do not have troglomorphic characteristics and can be classified as edaphic troglophile species, capable of completing its life cycle in soil, shallow subterranean habitats, or caves.

The molecular mechanisms of sarcomere proteins underlie the contractile function of the heart. Although our understanding of the sarcomere has grown tremendously, the focus has been on ventricular sarcomere isoforms due to the critical role of the ventricle in health and disease. However, atrial-specific or -enriched myofilament protein isoforms, as well as isoforms that become expressed in disease, provide insight into ways this complex molecular machine is fine-tuned. Here, we explore how atrialenriched sarcomere protein composition modulates contractile function to fulfill the physiological requirements of atrial function. We review how atrial dysfunction negatively affects the ventricle and the many cardiovascular diseases that have atrial dysfunction as a comorbidity. We also cover the pathophysiology of mutations in atrial-enriched contractile proteins and how they can cause primary atrial myopathies. Finally, we explore what is known about contractile function in various forms of atrial fibrillation. The differences in atrial function in health and disease underscore the importance of better studying atrial contractility, especially as therapeutics currently in development to modulate cardiac contractility may have different effects on atrial sarcomere function. Background and objectives: ultrasound is considered to be the primary tool for preoperative assessment of ovarian masses; however, the discrimination of borderline ovarian tumours (BOTs) is challenging, and depends highly on the experience of the sonographer. The Assessment of Different NEoplasias in the adneXa (ADNEX) model is considered to be a valuable diagnostic tool for preoperative assessment of ovarian masses; however, its performance for BOTs has not been widely studied, due to the low prevalence of these tumours. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of ADNEX model for preoperative diagnosis of BOTs. Methods: retrospective analysis of preoperative ultrasound datasets of patients diagnosed with BOTs on the final histology after performed surgery was done at a tertiary oncogynaecology centre during the period of 2012–2018. Results: 85 patients were included in the study. The performance of ADNEX model based on absolute risk (AR) improved with the selection of a more inclusive cut-off value, varying from 47 (60.3%) correctly classified cases of BOTs, with the selected cut-off of 20%, up to 67 (85.9%) correctly classified cases of BOTs with the cut-off value of 3%. When relative risk (RR) was used to classify the tumours, 59 (75.6%) cases were identified correctly. Forty (70.2%) cases of serous and 16 (72.7%) cases of mucinous BOTs were identified when AR with a 10% cut-off value was applied, compared to 44 (77.2%) and 15 (68.2%) cases of serous and mucinous BOTs, correctly classified by RR. The addition of Ca125 improved the performance of ADNEX model for all BOTs in general, and for different subtypes of BOTs. However, the differences were insignificant. Conclusions: The International Ovarian Tumour Analysis (IOTA) ADNEX model performs well in discriminating BOTs from other ovarian tumours irrespective of the subtype. The calculation based on RR or AR with the cut-off value of at least 10% should be used when evaluating for BOTs.

Despite the number of virulent pathogens that are projected to benefit from global change and to spread in the next century, we suggest that a combination of coextinction risk and climate sensitivity could make parasites at least as extinction prone as any other trophic group. However, the existing interdisciplinary toolbox for identifying species threatened by climate change is inadequate or inappropriate when considering parasites as conservation targets. A functional trait approach can be used to connect parasites' ecological role to their risk of disappearance, but this is complicated by the taxonomic and functional diversity of many parasite clades. Here, we propose biological traits that may render parasite species particularly vulnerable to extinction (including high host specificity, complex life cycles and narrow climatic tolerance), and identify critical gaps in our knowledge of parasite biology and ecology. By doing so, we provide criteria to identify vulnerable parasite species and triage parasite conservation efforts.

Sex hormones, reproductive status, and pathogen load all affect stress. Together with stress, these factors can modulate the immune system and affect disease incidence. Thus, it is important to concurrently measure these factors, along with their seasonal fluctuations, to better understand their complex interactions. Using steroid hormone metabolites from fecal samples, we examined seasonal correlations among zebra and springbok stress, reproduction, gastrointestinal (GI) parasite infections, and anthrax infection signatures in zebra and springbok in Etosha National Park (ENP), Namibia, and found strong seasonal effects. Infection intensities of all three GI macroparasites examined (strongyle helminths, Strongyloides helminths, and Eimeria coccidia) were highest in the wet season, concurrent with the timing of anthrax outbreaks. Parasites also declined with increased acquired immune responses. We found hormonal evidence that both mares and ewes are overwhelmingly seasonal breeders in ENP, and that reproductive hormones are correlated with immunosuppression and higher susceptibility to GI parasite infections. Stress hormones largely peak in the dry season, particularly in zebra, when parasite infection intensities are lowest, and are most strongly correlated with host mid-gestation rather than with parasite infection intensity. Given the evidence that GI parasites can cause host pathology, immunomodulation, and immunosuppression, their persistence in ENP hosts without inducing chronic stress responses supports the hypothesis that hosts are tolerant of their parasites. Such tolerance would help to explain the ubiquity of these organisms in ENP herbivores, even in the face of their potential immunomodulatory trade-offs with anti-anthrax immunity.
