Abstract

An overview is presented of the progress since 2021 in the construction and scientific programme preparation of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Licensing for building construction has been granted at the end of 2021. Licensing for Cat. A radiologic source has been also granted in 2022. The construction of the toroidal field magnet system is progressing. The prototype of the 170 GHz gyrotron has been produced and it is now under test on the FALCON facility. The design of the vacuum vessel, the poloidal field coils and the civil infrastructures has been completed. The shape of the first DTT divertor has been agreed with EUROfusion to test different plasma and exhaust scenarios: single null, double null, X-divertor and negative triangularity plasmas. A detailed research plan is being elaborated with the involvement of the EUROfusion laboratories.

Abstract

This paper is dealing with the physics basis used for the design of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT), under construction in Frascati (DTT 2019 DTT interim design report (2019)) Italy, and with the description of the main target plasma scenarios of the device. The main goal of the facility will be the study of the power exhaust, intended as a fully integrated core-edge problem, and eventually to propose an optimized divertor for the European DEMO plant. The approach used to design the facility is described and their main features are reported, by using simulations performed by state-of-the-art codes both for the bulk and edge studies. A detailed analysis of MHD, including also the possibility to study disruption events and Energetic Particles physics is also reported. Eventually, a description of the ongoing work to build-up a Research Plan written and shared by the full EUROfusion community is presented.

Abstract

Plasmas with negative triangularity (NT) shape have been recently shown to be able to achieve H-mode levels of confinement in L-mode, avoiding detrimental edge localised modes. Therefore, this plasma geometry is now studied as a possible viable option for a future fusion reactor. Within this framework, an NT option is under investigation for the full power scenario of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility, under construction in Italy, with $\delta_\mathrm{top} = -0.32/\delta_\mathrm{bottom}\simeq0.02$ top/bottom triangularity values at the separatrix. The transport properties of this scenario are studied in this work. Gyrokinetic GENE simulations and integrated modelling using ASTRA with the quasi-linear trapped gyro-Landau fluid (TGLF) model have been performed. The emerging picture from the ASTRA-TGLF runs with boundary conditions at $\rho_\mathrm{tor} = 0.94$ is that, in the L-mode NT option, the larger peaking of the kinetic profiles in the edge region is not sufficient to recover the loss of the PT H-mode pedestal, and reach similar central temperature values. Two additional shapes are also considered, obtained by flipping the triangularity of the scenarios, to single out the effect of the triangularity sign. A negligible ‘direct’ effect of the triangularity is found for the L-mode, while a small beneficial effect is observed for the H-mode. The ASTRA-TGLF results are validated by GENE and TGLF stand-alone at two selected radii. GENE shows ITG dominant micro-instability and explains the small beneficial effect of the NT for the H-mode as due to a strong reduction of the heat fluxes, when reversing the triangularity, with a relatively high $T_\mathrm{i}$ stiffness. An improvement of the predicted performances of the NT DTT scenario could come from $\rho_\mathrm{tor}\gtrsim0.9$ , as indicated by some recent experiments at the tokamak à configuration variable (TCV) and ASDEX Upgrade.

Abstract

Experiments, gyrokinetic simulations and transport predictions were performed to investigate if a negative triangularity (NT) L-mode option for the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) full-power scenario would perform similarly to the positive triangularity (PT) H-mode reference scenario, avoiding the harmful edge localized modes (ELMs). The simulations show that a beneficial effect of NT coming from the edge/scrape-off layer (SOL) region $\rho_{\mathrm{tor}} \gt 0.9$ is needed to allow the actual NT L-mode option to perform like the PT H-mode. Dedicated experiments at TCV and AUG, with DTT-like shapes, show an optimistic picture. In TCV, experiments indicate that even with the relatively small triangularity of the DTT NT scenario, a large beneficial effect of NT comes from the plasma edge and SOL, allowing NT L-modes to outperform PT L-modes with the same power input, reaching the same central pressures as PT H-modes with twice as much applied heating power. For AUG, NT plasmas go into H-mode more easily than for TCV, but always present much smaller pedestals compared with PT plasmas with the same input power, showing a much weaker or absent ELM activity. However, NT has a smaller beneficial effect for AUG than for TCV, with NT pulses outperforming PT pulses with the same input power only for an ECRH-only case with relatively low input power. For the considered AUG cases, PT pulses perform better than NT ones at higher ECRH power or with mixed NBI and ECRH power. Based on this analysis, the NT option is a viable alternative for the DTT full power scenario, providing high performance plasmas with reduced or absent ELMs.

5. On Classical Determinate Truth

Abstract

{The paper studies classical, type-free theories of truth and determinateness. Recently, Volker Halbach and Kentaro Fujimoto proposed a novel approach to classical determinate truth, in which determinateness is axiomatized by a primitive predicate. In the paper we propose a different strategy to develop theories of classical determinate truth in Halbach and Fujimoto's sense featuring a \emph{defined} determinateness predicate. This puts our theories of classical determinate truth in continuity with a standard approach to determinateness by authors such as Feferman and Reinhardt. The theories entail all principles of Fujimoto and Halbach's theories, and are proof-theoretically equivalent to Halbach and Fujimoto's CD+. They will be shown to be logically equivalent to a class of natural theories of truth, the \emph{classical closures of Kripke-Feferman truth}. The analysis of the proposed theories will also provide new insights on Fujimoto and Halbach's theories: we show that the latter cannot prove most of the axioms of the classical closures of Kripke-Feferman truth. This entails that, unlike what happens in our theories of truth and determinateness, Fujimoto and Halbach's \emph{inner theories} -- the sentences living under two layers of truth -- cannot be closed under standard logical rules of inference.}

6. Design of a multi-configurations divertor for the DTT facility

Abstract

The standard positive triangularity H-mode tokamak operation with Single Null Divertor (SND) configuration and tungsten monoblocks targets can face some difficulties in providing a solution scalable towards the realization of the fusion reactor. To provide a safer solution, the adoption of alternative divertor magnetic configurations (ADCs) has been considered to provide on the targets a stationary heat load of less than 10 MW/m2 presently considered an upper technological limit for a nuclear fusion reactor and to reduce enough plasma temperature to avoid tungsten sputtering and its possible plasma contamination. Additionally, different plasma scenarios have been considered to avoid the huge transient energy released due to the type-I ELMs of the high confinement H-mode operation.The new high field superconducting divertor tokamak test facility (DTT) [1] is presently under construction to specifically study power exhaust solutions in reactor relevant regimes. The first DTT divertor will use the ITER-like technology based on full tungsten monoblocks bonded on CuCrZr cooling tubes. To test and compare a wide set of different power exhaust solutions, the divertor is being designed to be compatible with the standard single null (SND) configuration but also with some ADCs, like the X divertor (XD) and the hybrid Super-X/long leg SN. Additionally, the l-mode negative triangularity (NT) operation is considered important to explore as a solution to avoid ELMs.Two different closed divertors with the same grazing angle (α = 2°) for the reference SND configuration have been considered: a so called “narrow” one with normalized divertor parameters similar to those presently foreseen for DEMO divertor and the “wide” one with a 50 % wider target aperture which allows testing long legs configurations as well as snowflake divertor configurations (SFD). For the “wide” divertor different dome sizes have been also considered.The comparison between different shapes and their optimization have been done with the 2D edge fluid-kinetic code SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE. The code easily manages all magnetic configurations and can resolve the heat load on all components thanks the mesh filling the whole divertor and vessel volume.In a representative sub-set of all the possible magnetic equilibrium configurations that can be realized in DTT, the edge modelling shows a better performance of the “wide” divertor compared to the “narrow” one. In fact, the “wide” divertor allows to have lower plasma temperature at the targets in pure deuterium at low PSOL power and also lower impurity concentrations is required to achieve plasma detachment by impurity seeding at the reference full power DTT scenario. The results seem to indicate that the improvement due to the longer legs possible with the “wide” divertor can overcome its lower apparent closure compared to the “narrow” divertor solution.

Abstract

Abstract Background The sweat chloride test (ST) is the gold standard for cystic fibrosis (CF) diagnosis in symptomatic patients, within the newborn screening and in the follow-up of CF patients during molecular therapies. However, false positives have been reported in patients with different diseases. We describe and discuss 4 cases due to different clinical conditions in which we recorded false positive ST, and the test remained altered for a period of varying length. Cases presentation Case 1: Eight months old female child suffering from constipation, recurrent vomiting and failure to thrive, family history of recurrent pancreatitis without mutations in the PRSS1 and SPINK1 genes. Both ST and fecal elastase were altered although no CFTR gene mutations were found. Due to rapid clinical deterioration, celiac disease was suspected and diagnosed by laboratory tests and intestinal biopsy. After 2 weeks of gluten-free diet ST and fecal elastase normalized. Case 2: 14 months old male suffering from bilateral renal dysplasia, episodes of metabolic alkalosis, recurrent respiratory infections and recurrent vomiting. The child had more ST positives, but no CFTR mutations were found. During follow-up, he developed sensorineural hearing loss and an atrial septic defect was found. Finally, a diagnosis of Klinefelter was made, but the ST normalized several years later. Case 3 and 4: Two boys with stubborn constipation and fecal occlusion treated with Poly Ethylene Glycol (PEG) with salts showed pathological ST. The test returned normal a few days after stopping treatment. Conclusions We hypotesized the possible causes of ST alteration in these conditions: in celiac disease it could be due to a transient dysregulation of the aquaporins, rapidly reversed by the diet; in Klinefelter, it may be due to stable pubertal hypoandrogenism; while, the PEG formulation itself contains salts that can temporarily alter ST.

This research work is part of a PhD project aiming to design a new helicon plasma thruster for cargo space missions, within a collaboration between the School of Aerospace Engineering of La Sapienza University and the ENEA Frascati research center. A 0-D global design model of the thruster is first established to identify the main operational conditions of the thruster, starting from a targeted performance in terms of specific impulse and thrust. These operational conditions are tested with dedicated simulations on the electromagnetic plasma-wave interaction within the ionization chamber, and on the electrostatic plasma acceleration within the magnetic nozzle. The former are carried out with a finite element electromagnetic code and confirm the technical feasibility of the identified operational RF power with a predefined chamber geometry. The latter are obtained with an electrostatic particle-in-cell code, which allows to estimate more precisely the achieved thruster performance. A sub-optimal thruster with an absorbed plasma power of around 1 kW, a thrust of around 10 mN and a specific impulse higher than 1000 s is successfully simulated. The established simulation framework will serve as the basis for the next optimization of the thruster geometry and operational conditions, with the ultimate goal of building and testing a new helicon thruster prototype.

Abstract

The simulation of electronic properties is a pivotal issue in modern electronic structure theory, driving significant efforts over the past decades to develop protocols for computing energy derivatives. In this work, we address this problem by developing a strategy to integrate the quantum phase estimation algorithm within a fully differentiable framework. This is accomplished by devising a smooth estimator able to tackle arbitrary initial states. We provide analytical expressions to characterize the statistics and algorithmic cost of this estimator. Furthermore, we provide numerical evidence that the estimation accuracy is retained when an arbitrary state is considered and that it exceeds the one of standard majority rule. We explicitly use this procedure to estimate chemically relevant quantities, demonstrating our approach through ground-state and triplet excited state geometry optimization with simulations involving up to 19 qubits. This work paves the way for new quantum algorithms that combine interference methods and quantum differentiable programming.

10. Fast-forwarding molecular ground state preparation with optimal control on analog quantum simulators

Abstract

We show that optimal control of the electron dynamics is able to prepare molecular ground states, within chemical accuracy, with evolution times approaching the bounds imposed by quantum mechanics. We propose a specific parameterization of the molecular evolution only in terms of interaction already present in the molecular Hamiltonian. Thus, the proposed method solely utilizes quantum simulation routines, retaining their favourable scalings. Due to the intimate relationships between variational quantum algorithms and optimal control we compare, when possible, our results with state-of-the-art methods in literature. We found that the number of parameters needed to reach chemical accuracy and algorithmic scaling are in line with compact adaptive strategies to build variational ansatze. The algorithm, which is also suitable for quantum simulators, is implemented emulating a digital quantum processor (up to 16 qubits) and tested on different molecules and geometries spanning different degrees of electron correlation.

Abstract

One of the main challenges concerning next generation tokamaks (such as DEMO) will be the development of a heat and power exhaust system able to withstand the large loads expected in the divertor region. A dedicated Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility has been proposed in the EUROfusion Roadmap, with the aim of testing unconventional solutions, such as advanced magnetic configurations and liquid metal divertors. Magnetic control of alternative plasma configurations, such as the X-Divertor, will play a key role in the solution of the heat exhaust and yet can be a challenging point, due to increased sensitivity introduced by secondary x-points. To overcome the complications introduced by secondary x-points in advanced plasma shapes, magnetic control in DTT is achieved by resolving to the eXtreme Shape Controller, in order to control both the plasma shape and the secondary x-point position.

Abstract

The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility will be equipped with in-vessel divertor coils able to locally modify the flux surfaces in the divertor region. When the first DTT divertor had not been selected, four in-vessel divertor coils were considered, with 10 turns each, fed by independent 4-quadrant SCR (thyristor) 0.5 kV - 5 kA - power supplies. This configuration was able to meet the design criteria in terms of requested performance and operational constraints, but one of the coils is not compatible with the geometry of the first DTT divertor, and another coil, scarcely efficient, can be removed. This paper discusses the design criteria, illustrates the possible revised layout, and illustrates the performance that can be achieved.

We study a network formation game where $n$ players, identified with the nodes of a directed graph to be formed, choose where to wire their outgoing links in order to maximize their PageRank centrality. Specifically, the action of every player $i$ consists in the wiring of a predetermined number $d_i$ of directed out-links, and her utility is her own PageRank centrality in the network resulting from the actions of all players. We show that this is a potential game and that the best response correspondence always exhibits a local structure in that it is never convenient for a node $i$ to link to other nodes that are at incoming distance more than $d_i $ from her. We then study the equilibria of this game determining necessary conditions for a graph to be a (strict, recurrent) Nash equilibrium. Moreover, in the homogeneous case, where players all have the same number $d$ of out-links, we characterize the structure of the potential maximizing equilibria and, in the special cases $ d=1 $ and $ d=2 $, we provide a complete classification of the set of (strict, recurrent) Nash equilibria. Abstract

This paper contributes to the ongoing discussions on the scholarly access to social media data, discussing a case where this access is barred despite its value for understanding and countering online disinformation and despite the absence of privacy or copyright issues. Our study concerns YouTube's engagement metrics and, more specifically, the way in which the platform removes "fake views" (i.e., views considered as artificial or illegitimate by the platform). Working with one and a half year of data extracted from a thousand French YouTube channels, we show the massive extent of this phenomenon, which concerns the large majority of the channels and more than half the videos in our corpus. Our analysis indicates that most fakes news are corrected relatively late in the life of the videos and that the final view counts of the videos are not independent from the fake views they received. We discuss the potential harm that delays in corrections could produce in content diffusion: by inflating views counts, illegitimate views could make a video appear more popular than it is and unwarrantedly encourage its human and algorithmic recommendation. Unfortunately, we cannot offer a definitive assessment of this phenomenon, because YouTube provides no information on fake views in its API or interface. This paper is, therefore, also a call for greater transparency by YouTube and other online platforms about information that can have crucial implications for the quality of online public debate.

49. Ceramics and the economy of Late Antique Campania

Abstract

This thesis examines the ceramic productions circulating in Campania in Late Antiquity, providing a detailed synthesis of published data and a complete analysis of new unpublished pottery assemblages, answering a series of questions on the chronology of the various pottery classes circulating in Campania in Late Antiquity, identifying new ceramic classes and new production areas in the region, and shedding light on various territories unexplored by previous studies. A large part of this study focuses on creating a solid corpus of primary data giving a key role to the immense informative potential of pottery analysis. Rather than creating a new theoretical economic synthesis using the existing incomplete data for Campania, the present work chooses to focus on working with the primary data, producing five detailed specialist reports based on extensive new ceramic evidence from the case study areas of the region. This research aims to offer a more defined picture of the economy of Campania in Late Antiquity, filling the gaps in the current scholarship and providing new data for the current debate on regional archaeological studies. To fill these gaps, four late antique ceramic assemblages were analysed from the Vesuvian area, the Ager Nolanus and Hirpinia, dated between the second half of the 4th and the beginning of the 6th century AD. To these case studies is added a smaller study on the Burnished Ware from the Catacomb of S. Gennaro, included in Appendix 2, which provides essential archaeometric data on the Burnished Ware from Neapolis, which is missing to date. The first objective of the study is to create an extensive catalogue of the main ceramic classes and their forms and types circulating in Campania during Late Antiquity to offer a specialist regional synthesis of the topic. Besides this, another essential aim of this research is to clarify the chronology of the appearance and circulation of all the main ceramic classes, with particular attention to the Painted Ware and the Burnished Ware. The second objective is to identify the areas of production of the late antique ceramics from the pottery assemblages taken under consideration through an extensive study of fabrics, which were classified and sampled for the polarised light optical microscope and inductivity coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results of these analyses provide crucial data for identifying the production areas, understanding the extent of some productions, and offering significant insight into the exchange system and ceramic trade in the late antique Campania. Based on these new data, the final section of this thesis considers the important roles of all scales of trade, micro-regional, regional and long-distance, offering important information from the micro-areas of the region (small economic units) to the macro factors, including the role of the state-controlled trade in the import of ceramic products and its economic impact. The various factors influencing the economy of a region, such as the location of the producer/consumer site, the market integration of imported ceramics and their imitation, the regional demand for these products, their trade and distribution, and the specific historical frame are also considered.
