Regulating industrial chemicals in foodstuffs and consumer products is a major aspect of protecting populations against health risks. Non-animal testing methods are an essential part of the radical change to the framework for toxicity testing that is long overdue in global economies. This paper discusses reasons why the drive to reduce animal testing for chemical safety testing is so difficult to achieve, as perceived by those who are closely involved in chemicals regulations in different capacities. Progress is slow, despite the fact that the ethico-legal conditions for a move away from animal testing are largely in place, and despite scientific arguments for a radical change in the paradigm of toxicity testing, away from reliance on animal studies. I present empirical data drawn from two studies in a European Commission context promoting non-animal methods. The aim of the paper is modest. It is to foreground the voices of those who deal with the science and regulation of chemicals on a day-to-day basis, rather than to offer a theoretical framework for what I heard from them. I offer a synthesis of the main challenges faced by non-animal alternatives, as these are perceived by people in different stakeholder groups dealing with chemicals regulation. I show where there are pockets of agreement between different stakeholders, and where the main disagreements lie. In particular there is dispute and disagreement over what counts as validation of these alternative tests, and by implication of the traditional ‘gold standard’ of animal testing. Finally, I suggest that the shift to non-animal methods in chemicals regulation demonstrates the need for the concept of validation to be broadened from a purely techno-scientific definition, and be more explictly understood as a demand for trust and acceptance, with more attention given to the complex social, institutional and economic settings in which it operates.

During the last decades, non-destructive investigation approaches have played an essential role in preserving structural integrity, capacity, and finding early defects in reinforced concrete (RC) heritage affected by time-dependent degradation. One of the most widespread structural RC damages belongs to corrosion phenomena. Electro-chemical approaches stand out among the non-destructive techniques presently available for identifying corrosive problems in-situ. The latter gives some knowledge in terms of physical quantities aiming to evaluate structural conditions by collecting indirect measures. Nevertheless, results are correlated to strong interpretative scale codes, which may not always provide appropriate interpretation of the defect's identity. In the paper a probabilistic degradation model, based on a statistical interpretation of the in situ electro-chemical measurements, has been proposed with the aim to give a contribution for structural diagnosis. Finally, results are validated through structural visual inspection.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho é investigar o padrão de consumo das famílias brasileiras com ênfase no gênero e na raça do responsável da família. A depender do responsável pela família, gasta-se mais ou menos em determinados bens e serviços, não somente devido às preferências individuais, mas igualmente devido às percepções diversas sobre prioridades dentro da própria família. No que tange ao gênero, a literatura enfatiza que, para as mulheres, o maior peso dos gastos é no bem-estar de filhos, e, em termos de raça, há ainda uma discussão incipiente sobre gastos direcionados a questões identitárias, mas chama a atenção que grande parte dos gastos é dedicado à sobrevivência, dadas as piores condições de vida de pretos e pardos na sociedade brasileira. Para entender estas diferenças sobre o padrão de consumo de famílias cujos responsáveis são homens ou mulheres, com distintas cores/raças, este artigo analisa os determinantes das categorias de consumo das famílias separadamente para cada um destes grupos. Para tanto, foi estimado um sistema de demanda de forma simultânea para seis categorias agregadas de consumo (alimentação, habitação, transporte, saúde, educação e outras despesas). A análise foi feita com a Pesquisa de Orçamentos Familiares de 2017-2018. Os resultados mostram que as mulheres gastam mais em habitação do que os homens, enquanto estes investem seus recursos mais nas despesas de transporte. Os gastos com alimentação são maiores entre os negros do que brancos, independente do sexo da pessoa de referência. Nas despesas com saúde e educação, brancos gastam mais do que negros, sendo que, com relação à saúde, mulheres brancas tendem a gastar mais do que homens. Renda, educação, idade e filhos são importantes fatores que podem explicar diferenças destes resultados.

Essential oils (EOs) have antimicrobial properties, but their low solubility in water and strong flavor pose challenges for direct incorporation into food, as they can negatively impact organoleptic properties. To overcome these issues, strategies such as oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions have been developed to improve EO dispersion and protection while enhancing antimicrobial efficacy. The objective of this study was to create sodium alginate-pink pepper essential oil (PPEO) nanoemulsions using microfluidization. Various formulations were assessed for physicochemical, physical, and antimicrobial properties to evaluate their potential in food applications. The microfluidized emulsions and nanoemulsions had droplet sizes ranging from 160 to 443 nm, polydispersity index (PdI) ranging from 0.273 to 0.638, and zeta potential (ζ) ranging from −45.2 to 66.3 mV. The nanoemulsions exhibited Newtonian behavior and remarkable stability after 20 days of storage. Antimicrobial testing revealed effectiveness against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 200 µg/mL for both microorganisms and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) of 800 µg/mL and 400 µg/mL, respectively, proving that encapsulation of PPEO in nanoemulsions significantly increased its antibacterial activity. These results present the possibility of using PPEO nanoemulsions as a more effective natural alternative to synthetic preservatives in food systems.

Objective: To identify independent risk factors for placenta accreta spectrum among pregnancies conceived with assisted reproductive technology. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Tertiary hospital. Patient(s): Individuals who conceived with assisted reproductive technology and reached 20 weeks’ gestation or later from 2011 to 2017. Intervention(s): Patient and cycle data was abstracted from hospital records and supplemented with state-level data. Poisson regression was used for multivariate analyses and reported as adjusted relative risks (aRR). Main Outcome Measure(s): Clinical or histologic placenta accreta spectrum. Result(s): Of 1,975 qualifying pregnancies, 44 (2.3%) met criteria for accreta spectrum at delivery. In the multivariate model, significant risk factors included low-lying placenta at delivery (aRR, 15.44; 95% CI 7.76–30.72), uterine factor infertility or prior uterine surgery (aRR, 4.68; 95% CI, 2.72–8.05), initial low-lying placentation that resolved (aRR, 3.83; 95% CI, 1.90–7.73), and use of frozen embryos (aRR, 3.02; 95% CI, 1.66–5.48). When the fresh vs frozen variable was replaced with controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, the final model did not change (aRR, 2.40 for unstimulated cycles, 95% CI, 1.32–4.38). With frozen transfers, the accreta rate was 16% when the endometrial thickness was < 6mm vs 3.8% with thicker endometrium (P=.02). Conclusion(s): Among pregnancies conceived with assisted reproductive technology, accreta spectrum is associated with low placental implantation (even when resolved), uterine factor infertility and prior uterine surgery, and the use of frozen embryo transfer or unstimulated cycles.

In September 2019, the results of Wellcome’s call for proposals for PhD training programmes were announced. This funding call was notable for making contributions to positive research culture as important a selection criterion as scientific excellence in PhD training. Aware that it’s intervention on enhancing research culture was experimental, Wellcome also commissioned work to reflect on its processes. I undertook two studies of the early phases of the funding call, of the Wellcome’s internal processes in shaping and implementing the call, and of the experiences and reflections of all applicants to the call. This Open Letter is a summary of the cross cutting themes of these two studies: the difficulties of defining positive research culture and of balancing it with scientific excellence; the expectation that supervision of PhD students is a key way to effect research culture change; the need for coherence between funding calls; issues around evaluating the track records of programmes on research culture, which further feed into defining the criteria of evaluation and selection relating to research culture.

In this article, F. Tony Carusi considers the politics of instrumentalism performed between educational policy and research that figures the teacher as the primary means to raise student achievement. By reducing teachers to a means toward an end, policy and research work together to collapse what teachers are into what teachers are for, and in doing so, they enable discourses that privilege the instrumental specifically as ontological. In contrast to this collapse, Carusi highlights here the resistance of the ontological to the instrumental by considering what teachers are apart from what they are for. Thinking the ontological apart from the instrumental leads to a dark pedagogy in which the refusals and negations performed by teachers occur where the politics of instrumentalism that renders them as an "in-school factor" do not see.

The editors of APJTE invited a group of teacher education scholars to have a conversation about what is 'missing' from the journal and/ or the field. In line with our celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the journal, we thought that it would be interesting to think about what hasn't been in the journal but might have been. We worked with people who have been, or are becoming, influential in the field, and/ or have been editors of the journal before; to have a conversation about what's (been) missing from the journal and/ or perhaps from teacher education scholarship more generally; what's been excluded and why, and what that tells us about the current state of the field, and the future perhaps.

Abstract Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is characterized by abnormal attachment of the placenta to the uterus, and attempts at placental delivery can lead to catastrophic maternal hemorrhage and death. Multidisciplinary delivery planning can significantly improve outcomes; however, current diagnostics are lacking as approximately half of pregnancies with PAS are undiagnosed prior to delivery. This is a nested case–control study of 35 cases and 70 controls with the primary objective of identifying circulating microparticle (CMP) protein panels that identify pregnancies complicated by PAS. Size exclusion chromatography and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry were used for CMP protein isolation and identification, respectively. A two-step iterative workflow was used to establish putative panels. Using plasma sampled at a median of 26 weeks’ gestation, five CMP proteins distinguished PAS from controls with a mean area under the curve (AUC) of 0.83. For a separate sample taken at a median of 35 weeks’ gestation, the mean AUC was 0.78. In the second trimester, canonical pathway analyses demonstrate over-representation of processes related to iron homeostasis and erythropoietin signaling. In the third trimester, these analyses revealed abnormal immune function. CMP proteins classify PAS well prior to delivery and have potential to significantly reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.

This article examines the role of PhD training programmes in identifying and implementing positive interventions in research culture in the biosciences. Using a data set consisting of transcripts from interviews and group discussions with 179 participants from 18 of the current 23 (78%) UK-based Wellcome-funded PhD programmes, we apply a systems theory methodology to the system of higher education and PhD training. Using system mapping as an investigative tool, this approach identifies points of leverage within the system where policy interventions might be best targeted to affect changes to research culture in the global higher education sector. The results of this investigation highlight the student-supervisor relationship as a nexus for these interventions and recommends the programme structure as a global policy for PhD training.

In recent weeks, the rate of SARS-CoV-2 infections has been progressively increasing all over the globe, even in countries where vaccination programs have been strongly implemented. In these regions in 2021, a reduction in the number of hospitalizations and deaths compared to 2020 was observed. This decrease is certainly associated with the introduction of vaccination measures. The process of the development of effective vaccines represents an important challenge. Overall, the breakthrough infections occurring in vaccinated subjects are in most cases less severe than those observed in unvaccinated individuals. This review examines the factors affecting the immunogenicity of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and the possible role of nutrients in modulating the response of distinct immune cells to the vaccination.

IntroductionThe CIAO project was launched in Spring 2020 to address the need to make sense of the numerous and disparate data available on COVID-19 pathogenesis. Based on a crowdsourcing model of large-scale collaboration, the project has exploited the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) knowledge management framework built to support chemical risk assessment driven by mechanistic understanding of the biological perturbations at the different organizational levels. Hence the AOPs might have real potential to integrate data produced through different approaches and from different disciplines as experienced in the context of COVID-19. In this study, we aim to address the effectiveness of the AOP framework (i) in supporting an interdisciplinary collaboration for a viral disease and (ii) in working as the conceptual mediator of a crowdsourcing model of collaboration.MethodsWe used a survey disseminated among the CIAO participants, a workshop open to all interested CIAO contributors, a series of interviews with some participants and a self-reflection on the processes.ResultsThe project has supported genuine interdisciplinarity with exchange of knowledge. The framework provided a common reference point for discussion and collaboration. The diagram used in the AOPs assisted with making explicit what are the different perspectives brought to the knowledge about the pathways. The AOP-Wiki showed up many aspects about its usability for those not already in the world of AOPs. Meanwhile their use in CIAO highlighted needed adaptations. Introduction of new Wiki elements for modulating factors was potentially the most disruptive one. Regarding how well AOPs support a crowdsourcing model of large-scale collaboration, the CIAO project showed that this is successful when there is a strong central organizational impetus and when clarity about the terms of the collaboration is brought as early as possible.DiscussionExtrapolate the successful CIAO approach and related processes to other areas of science where the AOP could foster interdisciplinary and systematic organization of the knowledge is an exciting perspective.

Background and Objectives. A relatively small number of studies have investigated the characteristics, comorbidities and laboratory measures associated with prognosis in patients with COVID-19, admitted to Internal Medicine Units (IMU) in Italy. Therefore, we performed a retrospective multicentre study to identify baseline features, predisposing to severe disease and poor outcomes, in adult individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection, hospitalized in 5 IMUs in the Emilia-Romagna region (Italy). Materials and Methods. We included 129 consecutive patients (male 75, median age 68 years) from 1st March 2020 to 31st October 2021. Patients’ baseline characteristics, comorbidities, laboratory measures, and outcomes were collected. Results. At admission, the factors significantly associated with a higher risk of in-hospital mortality included: age (median 68 vs. 83 years in survived vs. dead patients, P=0.000), diabetes [Odds Ratio (OR) 4.00, P=0.016], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 4.60, P=0.022), cancer (OR 5.81, P=0.021), acute- (OR 9.88, P=0.000) and chronic-renal failure (OR 6.76, P=0.004). During the study period, 16 individuals died (12.4%), all over 70 years old. In deceased vs. non-deceased patients were detected: i) more elevated white blood cells and neutrophils-counts and lower lymphocytes count; ii) higher levels of total/direct bilirubin, creatinine, C-reactive-protein, lactate-dehydrogenase, ferritin, but only a slight Interleukin-6 increase; iii) a trend of lower vitamin D values. Conclusions. We proposed a new I index, a modified form of the Age-Adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index, by considering pO2/FiO2 ratio, to better characterize the severity of COVID-19. Furthermore, we critically discuss our results with the current assumption which considers COVID-19 as a pathological condition associated with cytokine storm.

RESUMO O plano econômico do governo brasileiro denominado “Real” afetou o mercado de trabalho dos setores comercializáveis e não comercializáveis de diferentes maneiras. A política cambial e o processo orientado para o livre mercado adotado provocaram mudanças nos preços relativos em favor do setor não comercializável. Este artigo mostra o aumento da força de trabalho neste setor e uma redução da diferença entre a renda do setor comercializável e não comercializável. Além disso, mostra a melhoria dos indicadores de pobreza da força de trabalho, especialmente aqueles relacionados ao setor informal. Este artigo é baseado em dados do PME-IBGE (região metropolitana de São Paulo, 1994, 1995 e 1996).

Theoretical approaches to policy have started considering the ontological dimensions of policy. Concern for the ontological work performed by policy has introduced questions about what policy is apart from its instrumentality. There exists some research in policy studies proposing the possibility of non-instrumental and ontological features of policy, but as of yet those possibilities remain suggestions. This article theorises policy in order to elicit the non-instrumental and ontological dimensions of policy. The approach taken here emphasizes the constitutive role of policy over the expressive by introducing ontological rhetorics to policy studies. After describing ontological rhetorics, the article turns to an analysis of US federal education policies as an example illustrating the continuous work of ontological rhetorics in constituting a marketised public education as an excess of the various instrumental expressions of education policy under consideration. Following the analysis, the article concludes with some speculative questions and comments about the status of the critical in non-instrumental policy studies, suggesting a new approach to critique that develops uncertainly and alongside its object.

Recent work in education research and policy studies has been critical of the view that sees education as a fix for social problems. This perspective invites a reconsideration of the relationship between education and society that breaks from the long held instrumental assumptions informing most education theory and policy, wherein education is a means to a fully reconciled society. Drawing on Ernesto Laclau's argument for the impossibility of society, this article considers the ontology of education in light of society's impossibility. Referring to previous work on rhetorics and tropes in education policy and theory, we discuss how 'ontological rhetorics' in the discourse of education create the objects on and through which it operates. By focusing on the ontology of education, we are able to theorize education as more than and different from its role as a means to an end. Expanding the way Laclau and Mouffe use Althusser's notion of overdetermination, we speak of education as beyond and excessive to the demands of the social, making education a tropological register of the social through which we continually encounter the impossibility of society. Rather than being effective means to current forms of political power, education contributes to the production of discursive resources necessary for the construction of any political entity, for configurations of the political understood as the ontological process of creating the frameworks of social life.

ImportanceCigarette marketing contributes to initiation of cigarette smoking among young people, which has led to restrictions on use of cigarette advertising. However, little is known about other tobacco advertising and progression to tobacco use in youth and young adults.ObjectiveTo investigate whether receptivity to tobacco advertising among youth and young adults is associated with progression (being a susceptible never user or ever user) to use of the product advertised, as well as conventional cigarette smoking.Design, setting, and participantsThe Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study at wave 1 (2013-2014) and 1-year follow-up at wave 2 (2014-2015) was conducted in a US population-based sample of never tobacco users aged 12 to 24 years from wave 1 of the PATH Study (N = 10 989). Household interviews using audio computer-assisted self-interviews were conducted.ExposuresAdvertising for conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), cigars, and smokeless tobacco products at wave 1.Main outcomes and measuresProgression to susceptibility or ever tobacco use at 1-year follow-up in wave 2.ResultsOf the 10 989 participants (5410 male [weighted percentage, 48.3%]; 5579 female [weighted percentage, 51.7%]), receptivity to any tobacco advertising at wave 1 was high for those aged 12 to 14 years (44.0%; 95% confidence limit [CL], 42.6%-45.4%) but highest for those aged 18 to 21 years (68.7%; 95% CL, 64.9%-72.2%). e-Cigarette advertising had the highest receptivity among all age groups. For those aged 12 to 17 years, susceptibility to use a product at wave 1 was significantly associated with product use at wave 2 for conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco products. Among committed never users aged 12 to 17 years at wave 1, any receptivity was associated with progression toward use of the product at wave 2 (conventional cigarettes: adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.43; 95% CL, 1.23-1.65; e-cigarettes: AOR, 1.62; 95% CL, 1.41-1.85; cigars: AOR, 2.01; 95% CL, 1.62-2.49; and smokeless [males only]: AOR, 1.42; 95% CL, 1.07-1.89) and with use of the product (conventional cigarettes: AOR, 1.54; 95% CL, 1.03-2.32; e-cigarettes: AOR, 1.45; 95% CL, 1.19-1.75; cigars: AOR, 2.07; 95% CL, 1.26-3.40). Compared with those not receptive to any product advertising, receptivity to e-cigarette advertising, but not to cigarette advertising, was independently associated with those aged 12 to 21 years having used a cigarette at wave 2 (AOR, 1.60; 95% CL, 1.08-2.38).Conclusions and relevanceReceptivity to tobacco advertising was significantly associated with progression toward use in adolescents. Receptivity was highest for e-cigarette advertising and was associated with trying a cigarette.

Soil and groundwater contamination by NAPLs (Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids) is certainly a big issue for protecting the environment. In situ clean-up actions are routinely applied to mitigate the risk and are supplemented by monitoring surveys to assess the degree, extension, and evolution of the contamination. Radon gas is here used as a tracer of contamination because of its high solubility in non-polar solvents that produce a reduced concentration of the gas in polluted soil and groundwater with reference to radon levels in adjacent “clean” areas. This approach was employed in two sites where gasoline and diesel spillage occurred, causing soil and groundwater contamination. The two case studies were chosen because of their difference in terms of the hydrogeological features, age of the spillage, composition of residual NAPLs, and clean-up measures to test the advantages and limits of this approach in a variety of settings. Radon data, NAPL concentration in the groundwater (mainly total hydrocarbons, Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether and Ethyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether) and the depth of the groundwater table were periodically collected in surveys that spanned a period of two years. This dataset was statistically processed using principal component analysis to unravel which factors and attenuation processes are working in the sites and the response of the radon deficit approach to this complex series of phenomena concurrently occurring there.

The purpose of this study was to investigate susceptibility and ever use of tobacco products among adolescents and young adults in the US. Cross-sectional analysis of Wave 1(2013-2014) adolescent (12-17year-olds; n=13,651) and young adult (18-24year-olds; n=9112) data from the nationally-representative Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study was conducted. At 12years, 5% were ever tobacco users and 36% were susceptible to use. Seventy percent were susceptible at age 17years, and the same proportion were ever users at age 22years. Susceptibility levels were comparable for cigarettes and e-cigarette (28.6% and 27.4%, respectively), followed by hookah (22.0%), pipes (17.5%), cigars (15.2%), and smokeless tobacco (9.7%). Non-Hispanic (NH) Black (Adjusted Odds Ratio [ORadj]=1.36; 95% Confidence Limit [CL], 1.18-1.56) and Hispanic (ORadj=1.34: 95% CL,1.19-1.49) adolescent never- users were more likely to be susceptible to future use of a tobacco product than NH Whites. Susceptibility was higher with age (15-17yrs. vs 12-14yrs.: ORadj=1.69; 95% CL, 1.55-1.85) and parental education (college graduates vs less than HS education: ORadj=1.22, 95% CL, 1.08-1.39). Compared to exclusive users of hookah, cigars, or smokeless products, larger proportions of exclusive e-cigarette ever users were also susceptible to cigarette use. Among adolescents, lower levels of ever use of tobacco products are often counterbalanced by higher levels of susceptibility for future use, which may suggest delayed initiation in some groups. Ever users of a given tobacco product were more susceptible to use other tobacco products, putting them at risk for future multiple tobacco product use.

PurposeYouth who engage with online tobacco marketing may be more susceptible to tobacco use than unengaged youth. This study examines online engagement with tobacco marketing and its association with tobacco use patterns.MethodsCross-sectional analysis of youths aged 12-17 years who participated in wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (N = 13,651). Engagement with tobacco marketing was based on 10 survey items including signing up for email alerts about tobacco products in the past 6 months. Logistic regression was used to examine the association of online engagement with tobacco marketing and susceptibility to use any tobacco product among never-tobacco users, ever having tried tobacco, and past 30-day tobacco use.ResultsAn estimated 2.94 million U.S. youth (12%) engaged with ≥ one forms of online tobacco marketing. Compared with no engagement, the odds of susceptibility to the use of any tobacco product among never-tobacco users was independently associated with the level of online engagement: adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.48 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.24-1.76) for one form of engagement and AOR = 2.37 (95% CI, 1.53-3.68) for ≥ two forms of engagement. The odds of ever having tried tobacco were also independently associated with the level of online engagement: AOR = 1.33 (95% CI: 1.11-1.60) for one form of engagement and AOR = 1.54 (95% CI, 1.16-2.03) for ≥ two forms of engagement. The level of online engagement was not independently associated with past 30-day tobacco use.ConclusionsOnline engagement with tobacco marketing may represent an important risk factor for the onset of tobacco use in youth.

BackgroundThis paper describes the methods and conceptual framework for Wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study data collection. The National Institutes of Health, through the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is partnering with the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products to conduct the PATH Study under a contract with Westat.MethodsThe PATH Study is a nationally representative, longitudinal cohort study of 45 971 adults and youth in the USA, aged 12 years and older. Wave 1 was conducted from 12 September 2013 to 15 December 2014 using Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing to collect information on tobacco-use patterns, risk perceptions and attitudes towards current and newly emerging tobacco products, tobacco initiation, cessation, relapse behaviours and health outcomes. The PATH Study's design allows for the longitudinal assessment of patterns of use of a spectrum of tobacco products, including initiation, cessation, relapse and transitions between products, as well as factors associated with use patterns. Additionally, the PATH Study collects biospecimens from consenting adults aged 18 years and older and measures biomarkers of exposure and potential harm related to tobacco use.ConclusionsThe cumulative, population-based data generated over time by the PATH Study will contribute to the evidence base to inform FDA's regulatory mission under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act and efforts to reduce the Nation's burden of tobacco-related death and disease.

Background and objectivesNon-cigarette tobacco marketing is less regulated and may promote cigarette smoking among adolescents. We quantified receptivity to advertising for multiple tobacco products and hypothesized associations with susceptibility to cigarette smoking.MethodsWave 1 of the nationally representative PATH (Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health) study interviewed 10 751 adolescents who had never used tobacco. A stratified random selection of 5 advertisements for each of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smokeless products, and cigars were shown from 959 recent tobacco advertisements. Aided recall was classified as low receptivity, and image-liking or favorite ad as higher receptivity. The main dependent variable was susceptibility to cigarette smoking.ResultsAmong US youth, 41% of 12 to 13 year olds and half of older adolescents were receptive to at least 1 tobacco advertisement. Across each age group, receptivity to advertising was highest for e-cigarettes (28%-33%) followed by cigarettes (22%-25%), smokeless tobacco (15%-21%), and cigars (8%-13%). E-cigarette ads shown on television had the highest recall. Among cigarette-susceptible adolescents, receptivity to e-cigarette advertising (39.7%; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 37.9%-41.6%) was higher than for cigarette advertising (31.7%; 95% CI: 29.9%-33.6%). Receptivity to advertising for each tobacco product was associated with increased susceptibility to cigarette smoking, with no significant difference across products (similar odds for both cigarette and e-cigarette advertising; adjusted odds ratio = 1.22; 95% CI: 1.09-1.37).ConclusionsA large proportion of US adolescent never tobacco users are receptive to tobacco advertising, with television advertising for e-cigarettes having the highest recall. Receptivity to advertising for each non-cigarette tobacco product was associated with susceptibility to smoke cigarettes.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é investigar os determinantes dos diferenciais salarias entre homens e mulheres cotejando os setores, público com o privado. Para tanto, serão usadas as informações da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílio (PNAD) de 2015 e as técnicas de decomposição com base em Oaxaca, Blinder e Firpo, Fortin e Lemieux. O principal objetivo da pesquisa é entender o diferencial salarial ao longo da distribuição, distinguindo os trabalhadores dos setores público e privado. Os resultados dos modelos evidenciam que a maior parcela do diferencial salarial entre homens e mulheres, no Brasil, não encontra amparo nas distintas características, podendo, em certa medida, sinalizar presença de discriminação de gênero no mercado de trabalho. O tempo trabalhado, a escolaridade, o tipo de ocupação e a área de atuação contribuem, em alguma medida, para a explicação do diferencial salarial. Os resultados apontam para desigualdades de rendimento maiores no setor público, com ênfase na parte superior da distribuição, embora haja indícios de maior discriminação no setor privado.
