This study aims to describe movement disorders secondary to cocaine use. To our knowledge, while these presentations have been previously reported in the literature, a comprehensive review has not been published yet. We searched six databases from 1986 to 2022 without language restriction. Case reports, case series, and literature reviews have been analysed to find associations between cocaine use and movement disorders. The present study encompasses epidemiology, clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, and diagnostic challenges of abnormal movements associated with cocaine use. This review highlights the importance of proper initial evaluation and investigation taking into account the broad spectrum of differential diagnoses and exclusion of primary movement disorders. The role of the dopaminergic system in movement disorders is reviewed. Cocaine use is associated with movement disorders such as dystonia, parkinsonism, akathisia, and tics. The complex interaction of multiple factors, including other neurological conditions, such as Tourette syndrome, and additional substances of abuse is discussed. The presentation of these manifestations is often heterogeneous and does not follow a specific pattern. In this way, future research is needed to improve our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms and develop novel drug targets for these disorders. Increased awareness among the general public and policymakers could translate into reduced stigma and improved care.

Abstract Anisotropic transport properties have been assessed in a number of cuprate superconductors, providing evidence for a nematic state. We have recently shown that in ultra-thin YBa2Cu3O7−δ films, where nematicity is induced via strain engineering, there is a suppression of charge density wave scattering along the orthorhombic a-axis and a concomitant enhancement of strange metal behavior along the b-axis. Here we develop a microscopic model, that is based on the strong interaction between the substrate facets and the thin film, to account for the unconventional phenomenology. Based on the atomic force microscopy imaging of the substrates’ surface, the model is able to predict the absence (presence) of nematicity and the resulting transport properties in films grown on SrTiO3 (MgO) substrates. Our result paves the way to new tuning capabilities of the ground state of high-temperature superconductors by substrate engineering.

Belly dancer’s dyskinesia (BDD) is characterized by involuntary abdominal wall movements that are rhythmic, repetitive, and dyskinetic. The present study aims to review BDD’s etiology, pathophysiology, and management. We searched six databases to locate existing reports on BDD published from 1990 to October 2023 in electronic form. A total of 47 articles containing 59 cases were found. The majority of the patients affected by BDD were female, accounting for 61.01% (36/59) of the cases. The mean and median ages were 49.8 (standard deviation: 21.85) and 52 years (range: 7–85), respectively. The BDD was unilateral in only 3.38% (2/59). The most commonly reported causes associated with BDD were 17 idiopathic, 11 drug-induced, 11 postsurgical procedures, 5 pregnancies, and 4 Vitamin B12 deficiencies. BDD is a diagnosis of exclusion, and other more common pathologies with similar presentation should be ruled out initially. Differential diagnostic reasoning should include diaphragmatic myoclonus, cardiac conditions, truncal dystonia, abdominal motor seizures, propriospinal myoclonus, and functional or psychiatric disorders.

Abstract Recruitment of fibroblasts to tumors and their activation into cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) is a strategy used by tumor cells to direct extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, invasion, and metastasis, highlighting the need to investigate the molecular mechanisms driving CAF function. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) regulates the communication between cancer and stroma and facilitates the progression of serous ovarian cancer (SOC). By binding to Endothelin A (ETA) and B (ETB) receptors, ET-1 enables the recruitment of β-arrestin1 (β-arr1) and the formation of signaling complexes that coordinate tumor progression. However, how ET-1 receptors might “educate” human ovarian fibroblasts (HOFs) to produce altered ECM and promote metastasis remains to be elucidated. This study identifies ET-1 as a pivotal factor in the activation of CAFs capable of proteolytic ECM remodeling and the generation of heterotypic spheroids containing cancer cells with a propensity to metastasize. An autocrine/paracrine ET-1/ETA/BR/β-arr1 loop enhances HOF proliferation, upregulates CAF marker expression, secretes pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increases collagen contractility, and cell motility. Furthermore, ET-1 facilitates ECM remodeling by promoting the lytic activity of invadosome and activation of integrin β1. In addition, ET-1 signaling supports the formation of heterotypic HOF/SOC spheroids with enhanced ability to migrate through the mesothelial monolayer, and invade, representing metastatic units. The blockade of ETA/BR or β-arr1 silencing prevents CAF activation, invadosome function, mesothelial clearance, and the invasive ability of heterotypic spheroids. In vivo, therapeutic inhibition of ETA/BR using bosentan (BOS) significantly reduces the metastatic potential of combined HOFs/SOC cells, associated with enhanced apoptotic effects on tumor cells and stromal components. These findings support a model in which ET-1/β-arr1 reinforces tumor/stroma interaction through CAF activation and fosters the survival and metastatic properties of SOC cells, which could be counteracted by ETA/BR antagonists.

Il c.d. superamento della personalità giuridica è uno strumento che la dottrina e la giurisprudenza hanno elaborato per offrire tutela contro particolari ipotesi di abuso del diritto. Le soluzioni normative sono molto diversificate nella legislazione degli Stati nazionali (e nel diritto dell’UE). Nel codice civile italiano non si prevede un generale divieto di abuso, ma con la riforma del diritto societario (2003) e con la riforma del diritto fallimentare (2019), si sono introdotti istituti nuovi utili a contrastare l’abuso del diritto, senza prevedere il superamento della persona giuridica. Nella presente indagine si vuole verificare se: i) le nuove disposizioni previste dal diritto italiano lascino ancora spazio per ricorrere al superamento della personalità giuridica al fine di sanzionare l’abuso della responsabilità limitata; ii) è utile una disciplina di diritto positivo che tipicizzi le fattispecie di abuso. Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by paroxysmal and transient events of unilateral or bilateral paresis, usually occurring before 18 months of age. Mutations in the ATP1A3 gene, mainly p.Asp801Asn, p.Glu815Lys, and p.Gly947Arg at the protein level, are found in around 80% of the individuals with AHC. Interestingly, these mutations reflect the degree of severity of the neurological symptoms (p.Glu815Lys > p.Asp801Asn > p.Gly947Arg). Some channels involved in this disorder are N-type voltage-gated calcium channels, ATP-sensitive potassium channels, and the sodium/calcium exchanger. In this context, the management of AHC should be divided into the treatment of attacks, prophylactic treatment, and management of comorbidities commonly found in this group of individuals, including epilepsy, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, aggressive behavior, cognitive impairment, movement disorders, and migraine. The importance of an integrated approach with a multidisciplinary team, such as neuropsychologists and dietitians, is worth mentioning, as well as the follow-up with a neurologist. In the present study, we propose new diagnostic criteria for AHC, dividing it into clinical, laboratory, supporting, and atypical features. Also, we review the location of the mutations in the ATP1A3 protein of individuals with AHC, rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP) variants, and early infantile epileptic encephalopathy (variants with hemiplegic attack). We also include a section about the animal models for ATP1A3 disorders.

The aim of this article is to analyse the poetic work La Sicilia, il suo cuore by Leonardo Sciascia. In particular, the study aims to present the first Spanish translation (Sicilia, su corazón) of the 1952 work published by Bardi Editore, translated by Lorenzo Cittadini and Giovanni Caprara for El Toro Celeste in Malaga, with a prior study by Prof. Miguel Ángel Cuevas and an interview with Gigi Restivo of Casa Sciascia. The volume, twenty-four poems divided into two main sections, offers the reader the intimate poetic debut of the racalmutese author, a distilled overview of the questions on Sciascia’s most pressing issues, such as justice, truth, silence, death, the interiority of Sicily and being Sicilian, to which, subsequently and in prose form, the author tried to answer. The poetic form of the collection, rarely the subject of study, in fact tends significantly towards prose and bears witness, perhaps, to the first and last case in which Sciascia resorts to himself, disguised as poet-reporter, to decipher the enigma of being Sicilian, the «sicilitudine». Finally, the study intends to reinforce that cultural bridge with his beloved Spain, leading Sciascia’s verses to that part of the world that he confessed to having in his heart, now making the poetic sentiment that bound him to his land fully comprehensible: the deep, inland Sicily, the one far from the sea, which has become the pulsating centre, the observatory on the world.

Abstract The universality of the strange metal phase in many quantum materials is often attributed to the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP), a zero-temperature phase transition ruled by quantum fluctuations. In cuprates, where superconductivity hinders direct QCP observation, indirect evidence comes from the identification of fluctuations compatible with the strange metal phase. Here we show that the recently discovered charge density fluctuations (CDF) possess the right properties to be associated to a quantum phase transition. Using resonant x-ray scattering, we studied the CDF in two families of cuprate superconductors across a wide doping range (up to p = 0.22). At p* ≈ 0.19, the putative QCP, the CDF intensity peaks, and the characteristic energy Δ is minimum, marking a wedge-shaped region in the phase diagram indicative of a quantum critical behavior, albeit with anomalies. These findings strengthen the role of charge order in explaining strange metal phenomenology and provide insights into high-temperature superconductivity.

Neuroimaging can provide significant benefits in evaluating patients with movement disorders associated with drugs. This literature review describes neuroimaging techniques performed to distinguish Parkinson’s disease from drug-induced parkinsonism. The dopaminergic radiotracers already reported to assess patients with drug-induced parkinsonism are [123I]-FP-CIT, [123I]-β-CIT, [99mTc]-TRODAT-1, [18F]-DOPA, [18F]-AV-133, and [18F]-FP-CIT. The most studied one and the one with the highest number of publications is [123I]-FP-CIT. Fludeoxyglucose (18F) revealed a specific pattern that could predict individuals susceptible to developing drug-induced parkinsonism. Another scintigraphy method is [123I]-MIBG cardiac imaging, in which a relationship between abnormal cardiac imaging and normal dopamine transporter imaging was associated with a progression to degenerative disease in individuals with drug-induced parkinsonism. Structural brain magnetic resonance imaging can be used to assess the striatal region. A transcranial ultrasound is a non-invasive method with significant benefits regarding costs and availability. Optic coherence tomography only showed abnormalities in the late phase of Parkinson’s disease, so no benefit in distinguishing early-phase Parkinson’s disease and drug-induced parkinsonism was found. Most methods demonstrated a high specificity in differentiating degenerative from non-degenerative conditions, but the sensitivity widely varied in the studies. An algorithm was designed based on clinical manifestations, neuroimaging, and drug dose adjustment to assist in the management of patients with drug-induced parkinsonism.

Background and Objectives: Vertical rhythmic dyskinetic movements that are primarily drug-induced and affect solely the jaw, mouth, and lips without involving the tongue have been historically described as “rabbit” syndrome (RS). Evidence on the unique features and implications of this disorder remains limited. This literature review aims to evaluate the clinical–epidemiological profile, pathological mechanisms, and management of this movement disorder. Materials and Methods: Two reviewers identified and assessed relevant reports in six databases without language restriction published between 1972 and 2024. Results: A total of 85 articles containing 146 cases of RS were found. The mean frequency of RS among adults in psychiatric hospitals was 1.2% (range 0–4.4%). The mean age of affected patients was 49.2 (SD: 17.5), and 63.6% were females. Schizophrenia was the most frequent comorbidity found in 47.6%, followed by bipolar disorder (17.8%), major depressive disorder (10.3%), and obsessive–compulsive disorder (3.7%). Five cases were idiopathic. The most common medications associated with RS were haloperidol (17%), risperidone (14%), aripiprazole (7%), trifluoperazine (5%), and sulpiride (5%). The mean duration of pharmacotherapy before RS was 21.4 weeks (SD: 20.6). RS occurred in association with drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) in 27.4% and with tardive dyskinesia (TD) in 8.2% of cases. Antipsychotic modification and/or anticholinergic drugs resulted in full or partial recovery in nearly all reported cases in which they were prescribed. Conclusions: RS occurs as a distinct drug-induced syndrome associated primarily but not exclusively with antipsychotics. Distinguishing RS from TD is important because the treatment options for the two disorders are quite different. By contrast, RS may be part of a spectrum of symptoms of DIP with similar course, treatment outcomes, and pathophysiology.

Background: Pisa syndrome, also known as pleurothotonus, is a neurological condition characterized by more than ten degrees of constant lateral curvature of the spine when upright. In this way, the present manuscript aims to systematically review Pisa syndrome secondary to drugs. Methods: Two reviewers identified and assessed relevant reports in six databases without language restriction between January 1990 and June 2024. Results: The prevalence of Pisa syndrome varied from 0.037 to 9.3%. We found 109 articles containing 191 cases of drug-induced Pisa syndrome reported in the literature. The mean and median ages were 59.70 (SD = 19.02) and 67 (range = 12–98 years). The most prevalent sex was female, 56.91% (107/188). The most frequent medications associated with Pisa syndrome were acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in 87 individuals. Of 112 individuals in which the onset time from the medication to the movement disorder occurrence was reported, 59 took place within a month. In this way, a return to baseline was observed in 45.50% of the cases, and partial recovery was observed in 14.28%. Conclusion: We proposed new diagnostic criteria for Pisa syndrome based on previous findings in the literature. Moreover, multiple mechanisms are probably involved in balance control and the development of lateral trunk flexions.

The purpose of this scoping review is to isolate and investigate the existing data and research that identifies if the synchronous face-to-face visual presence of a teacher in a virtual learning environment (VLE) is a significant factor in a student's ability to maintain good mental health. While the present research on this explicit interaction among VLE implementation and student mental health is limited, the material suggests a framework for strong utilization of VLEs. Overall, our research has shown that authentic, high quality VLEs are ones that have as their primary focus the communication between students and their teachers and between students and their peers. This communication is best generated through synchronous connections where there exists the ability to convey the student's immediate needs in real-time. Our research results and discussion will outline how a team approach that brings together teachers, students, administration, counsellors, mental health support staff, instructional designers, and ICT specialists is necessary to create a genuinely enriching VLE where both learning and social-emotional needs can be met. The authors present a case for further study in order to reveal the nature of the interaction among VLEs and student mental health.

In Los Angeles, 45,021 people experiencing unsheltered homelessness received street outreach services between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020. Supporting and housing unsheltered residents is an urgent priority in Los Angeles, and it is imperative to better understand the challenges that individuals are facing. Questions persist about the size and unique needs of the group of individuals who are unsheltered and diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI). This is because unsheltered individuals experiencing serious mental illness, and particularly those individuals with a diagnosis of a psychotic spectrum disorder (“PSD”), may experience symptoms that could cause or contribute to losing housing and that could lengthen the duration of homelessness. This group often needs intensive, specialized, and coordinated care in order to exit homelessness. To better understand the prevalence of psychotic spectrum disorders (“PSD”) among those who are unsheltered, the California Policy Lab (CPL) linked homeless outreach service records found in the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s (LAHSA) Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) to service records at the LA County Department of Mental Health (DMH) and the LA County Department of Health Services (DHS). We used the linked data to estimate the number of people who are enrolled in a street outreach program and who had a service visit for serious mental illness (“SMI”) in the five years prior to their street outreach enrollment. We then stratified this group into two distinct groups: those with service visits with a diagnosis of PSD and those with service visits with a diagnosis of a serious mental illness without psychotic symptoms (“Other SMI”). We analyzed these data to show how many people in these groups were enrolled in interim or permanent housing within one year of their enrollment in street outreach services, and we break down interim and permanent housing enrollments by race and ethnicity. Our analysis also shows how many street outreach participants did not have service records for PSD or Other SMI within the five years prior to enrolling in street outreach.This work has been supported, in part, by the University of California Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives grants MRP-19-600774 and M21PR3278.

O objetivo deste artigo é situar a biografia como método relevante de pesquisa, atualizando sua validade para além de uma dimensão individualista ou subjetivista. Nessa direção, o texto resgata as contribuições da sociologia compreensiva e da fenomenologia para o emprego de dados biográficos no trabalho científico. Depois, apresenta a crítica de Pierre Bourdieu ao uso desses materiais, apontando a proposta de biografias sociológicas de Bernard Lahire como uma via metodológica com potencial revigorado para a utilização de relatos biográficos. Por fim, posiciona o argumento de que uma abordagem em escala individual, como a designada por Lahire, pode dialogar com alguns dos principais dilemas epistemológicos da atualidade.
