The rapid development of mega-constellations risks multiple tragedies of the commons, including tragedies to ground-based astronomy, Earth orbit, and Earth’s upper atmosphere. Moreover, the connections between the Earth and space environments are inadequately taken into account by the adoption of a consumer electronic model applied to space assets. For example, we point out that satellite re-entries from the Starlink mega-constellation alone could deposit more aluminum into Earth’s upper atmosphere than what is done through meteoroids; they could thus become the dominant source of high-altitude alumina. Using simple models, we also show that untracked debris will lead to potentially dangerous on-orbit collisions on a regular basis due to the large number of satellites within mega-constellation orbital shells. The total cross-section of satellites in these constellations also greatly increases the risk of impacts due to meteoroids. De facto orbit occupation by single actors, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and the possibility of free-riding exacerbate these risks. International cooperation is urgently needed, along with a regulatory system that takes into account the effects of tens of thousands of satellites.

The development of large constellations of satellites (i.e., so-called megaconstellations or satcons) is poised to increase the number of LEO satellites by more than an order of magnitude in the coming decades. Such a rapid growth of satellite numbers makes the consequences of major fragmentation events ever more problematic. In this study, we investigate the collisional risk to on-orbit infrastructure from kinetic anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon tests, using the 2019 Indian test as a model. We find that the probability of one or more collisions occurring over the lifetime of ASAT fragments increases significantly in a satcon environment compared with the orbital environment in 2019. For the case of 65,000 satellites in LEO, we find that the chance of one or more satellites being struck by ASAT fragments of size 1 cm or larger is more than 25% for a single test. Including sizes down to 3 mm in our models suggests that impacts will occur for any such event. Finally, we apply our methods to examine the November 2021 Russian ASAT test, also finding a significant collision probability over the lifetime of the fragments. We present observations of 23 Starlink satellites in the $g'$ bandpass, obtained from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory's Plaskett 1.8 metre telescope. The targets include a mixture of satellites with and without brightness mitigation measures (i.e., visors). At the time of the observations (16 July 2021), Starlink satellites were sunlight throughout the night, and even with strict elevation and azimuth limits, there were over 800 candidate Starlink arcs. The satellites altogether have a median absolute brightness (550 km) of $\overline{H}_g^{550} =5.3$ mag. Dividing the targets into those without and with visors, their median absolute magnitudes are $\overline{H}_g^{550}(no~visor)=5.1$ and $\overline{H}^{550}_g(visor)=5.7$ mag, respectively. While the visor sample is dimmer in aggregate, the absolute brightness distribution ranged from $H_g^{550}=4.3$ mag to 9.4 mag, with the brightest being a visored satellite and the dimmest a satellite with no mitigation. International audience; Many advancements in planetary science are achieved by seizing upon the opportunity created by rare natural events (e.g. comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 Jupiter impact; 1994) and by planned physical interactions (e.g. Deep Impact into comet Tempel 1; 2005). A forthcoming opportunity to seize upon a natural physical “experiment” occurs on April 13, 2029 with the unprecedentedly close Earth encounter by the large 340m asteroid (99942) Apophis. On that date, nature is performing the “experiment” of subjecting the physical body of Apophis to Earth’s tidal torques as it approaches to within 31,000 km of Earth’s surface, a distance that is closer than orbiting geosynchronous satellites.A potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) as large as Apophis encountering Earth this closely (within 0.1 lunar distances) is, on average, a once-per-thousand year event. (In context, Apophis is 7 times larger and 350 times more massive than the Tunguska 1908 impactor; 5000 times more massive than Chelyabinsk 2013.) Because of this event’s incredible rarity, knowledge gained through measurements and outcomes of the Apophis 2029 “natural experiment” are clearly a decadal, if not millennial, opportunity for planetary science. Most specifically, this knowledge opportunity is for the science supporting planetary defense. Further, on April 13, 2029 all of Earth will be watching: Apophis will be visible to the naked eye speeding across the evening sky for an estimated 2 billion people spanning western Europe and northern Africa.In this White Paper we outline our current best understanding, and uncertainties, for scientific advances in the physical study of potentially hazardous asteroids that may be achievable by measuring physical changes of Apophis’ spin, surface structure, and/or shape configuration inresponse to Earth’s tidal torques. If tidal torques themselves, or surface configuration changes induce any measurable seismic vibration signal inside Apophis, a new field of asteroid seismology has the potential to be born. Over six decades of planetary science, seismology has been achieved beyond Earth for only two planetary worlds: Moon and Mars.With this White Paper, we take no position on how to implement specific investigations capable of achieving the science advances offered by the Apophis 2029 opportunity. Instead we advocate that competitive selection of investigations, be they theoretical or observational (ground-based, space-based, or in situ), be executed under the direction of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, with a projected and perhaps necessarily augmented budget capable of supporting them. International collaboration is strongly encouraged.Thus, summarizing in four specific points, we urge the framers of the Decadal Survey to:• Recognize the decadal, if not millennial, opportunity for the science of planetary defense presented by the Apophis 2029 once-per-thousand-year “natural experiment.”• Prioritize as a top-level planetary defense science goal modeling and measuring the physical outcome on Apophis exerted by Earth’s tidal torques so as to achieve the greatest possible new insights into the physical nature, including the internal structure, of PHAs.• Recognize that time is of the essence for defining and implementing investigations of physical effects on Apophis, particularly if in situ measurements are to be considered. An Apophis 2029 Science Definition Team may be prescribed.• Recognize that the achievable knowledge of PHAs presented by the Apophis 2029 opportunity could have immeasurable benefits to the future of humanity, in the highly unlikely, but not impossible necessity to mitigate a future impact threat

Megaconstellations of thousands to tens of thousands of artificial satellites (satcons) are rapidly being developed and launched. These satcons will have negative consequences for observational astronomy research, and are poised to drastically interfere with naked-eye stargazing worldwide should mitigation efforts be unsuccessful. Here we provide predictions for the optical brightnesses and on-sky distributions of several satcons, including Starlink, OneWeb, Kuiper, and StarNet/GW, for a total of 65,000 satellites on their filed or predicted orbits. We develop a simple model of satellite reflectivity, which is calibrated using published Starlink observations. We use this model to estimate the visible magnitudes and on-sky distributions for these satellites as seen from different places on Earth, in different seasons, and different times of night. For latitudes near 50 degrees North and South, satcon satellites make up a few percent of all visible point sources all night long near the summer solstice, as well as near sunrise and sunset on the equinoxes. Altering the satellites' altitudes only changes the specific impacts of the problem. In circumstellar discs, collisional grinding of planetesimals produces second-generation dust. While it remains unclear whether this ever becomes a major component of the total dust content, the presence of such dust, and potentially the substructure within, it can be used to explore a disc's physical conditions. A perturbing planet produces nonaxisymmetric structures and gaps in the dust, regardless of its origin. The dynamics of planetesimals, however, will be very different than that of small dust grains due to weaker gas interactions. Therefore, planetesimal collisions could create dusty disc structures that would not exist otherwise. In this work, we use N-body simulations to investigate the collision rate profile of planetesimals near mean-motion resonances. We find that a distinct bump or dip feature is produced in the collision profile, the presence of which depends on the libration width of the resonance and the separation between the peri- and apocenter distances of the edges of the resonance. The presence of one of these two features depends on the mass and eccentricity of the planet. Assuming that the radial dust emission traces the planetesimal collision profile, the presence of a bump or dip feature in the dust emission at the 2:1 mean-motion resonance can constrain the orbital properties of the perturbing planet. This assumption is valid, so long as radial drift does not play a significant role during the collisional cascade process. Promoting national regulation of space mining rather than multilateral governance risks a “race to the bottom”

We present VLA 9 mm (33 GHz) observations of the HD 141569 system from semester 16A. The observations achieve a resolution of 0.25 arcsec ($\sim28$ au) and a sensitivity of $4.7~\mu \rm Jy~beam^{-1}$. We find (1) a $52\pm 5~\mu$Jy point source at the location of HD 141569A that shows potential variability, (2) the detected flux is contained within the SED-inferred central clearing of the disc meaning the spectral index of the dust disc is steeper than previously inferred, and (3) the M dwarf companions are also detected and variable. Previous lower-resolution VLA observations (semester 14A) found a higher flux density, interpreted as solely dust emission. When combined with ALMA observations, the VLA 14A observations suggested the spectral index and grain size distribution of HD 141569's disc was shallow and an outlier among debris systems. Using archival ALMA observations of HD 141569 at 0.87 mm and 2.9 mm we find a dust spectral index of $\alpha_{\rm mm} = 1.81\pm 0.20$. The VLA 16A flux corresponds to a brightness temperature of $\sim5\times10^{6}$ K, suggesting strong non-disc emission is affecting the inferred grain properties. The VLA 16A flux density of the M2V companion HD 141569B is $149\pm9~\mu$Jy, corresponding to a brightness temperature of $\sim2\times10^{8}$ K and suggesting significant stellar variability when compared to the VLA14A observations, which are smaller by a factor of $\sim6$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 8 pages, 6 figures

Surprisingly strong CO emission has been observed from more than a dozen debris disks around nearby main-sequence stars. The origin of this CO is unclear, in particular whether it is left over from the protoplanetary disk phase or is second-generation material released from collisions between icy bodies like debris dust. The primary unexplored avenue for distinguishing the origin of the material is understanding its molecular composition. Here we present a deep search for five molecules (CN, HCN, HCO+, SiO, and CH3OH) in the debris disk around 49 Ceti. We take advantage of the high sensitivity of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at Band 7 to integrate for 3.2 hours at modest spatial (1") and spectral (0.8 km/s) resolution. Our search yields stringent upper limits on the flux of all surveyed molecular lines, which imply abundances relative to CO that are orders of magnitude lower than those observed in protoplanetary disks and Solar System comets, and also those predicted in outgassing models of second-generation material. However, if CI shielding is responsible for extending the lifetime of any CO produced in second-generation collisions, as proposed by Kral et al. (2018), then the line ratios do not reflect true ice phase chemical abundances, but rather imply that CO is shielded by its own photodissociation product, CI, but other molecules are rapidly photodissociated by the stellar and interstellar radiation field., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Gravitational mass movements, such as rockfalls or landslides, represent geo-risks that require geotechnical safety measures in order to avert monetary damage and to protect human life. For the targeted stabilization and consolidation of rock masses, the gluing of rock which is known from mining and tunnel construction, is ideal. Here, an adhesive is grouted into the rock fissures which, when cured, hold the rock together by means of adhesive and cohesive forces. The selection of the right adhesive is of great importance, as it has a decisive influence on the mechanical properties of the rock and thus determines the success of the securing measure. Various adhesives such as resins and acrylate gel were examined in an extensive experimental laboratory program which was expanded to include numerical simulations with FLAC3D. The subject of the laboratory tests are jointed sandstone samples. The test program of the rock mechanical standard tests was supplemented by special tests, such as adhesive tensile strength tests to determine the adhesion between adhesive and sandstone. In order to assess the effectiveness of the adhesive bond, glued and intact sandstone samples were compared. Based on the experimental and numerical investigations, the application possibilities and limits of different polymer-based adhesives are shown and an application recommendation is given.

Empirical trends in stellar X-ray and radio luminosities suggest that low mass ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) should not produce significant radio emission. Defying these expectations, strong non-thermal emission has been observed in a few UCDs in the 1-10 GHz range, with a variable component often attributed to global aurorae and a steady component attributed to other processes such as gyrosynchrotron emission. While both auroral and gyrosynchrotron emission peak near the critical frequency, only the latter radiation is expected to extend into millimeter wavelengths. We present ALMA 97.5 GHz and VLA 33 GHz observations of a small survey of 5 UCDs. LP 349-25, LSR J1835+3259, and NLTT 33370 were detected at 97.5 GHz, while LP 423-31 and LP 415-20 resulted in non-detections at 33 GHz. A significant flare was observed in NLTT 33370 that reached a peak flux of 4880 +/- 360 microJy, exceeding the quiescent flux by nearly an order of magnitude, and lasting 20 seconds. These ALMA observations show bright 97.5 GHz emission with spectral indices ranging from alpha = -0.76 to alpha = -0.29, suggestive of optically thin gyrosynchrotron emission. If such emission traces magnetic reconnection events, then this could have consequences for both UCD magnetic models and the atmospheric stability of planets in orbit around them. In this paper, we model the chemical evolution of a 0.25 M$_{\odot}$ protoplanetary disc surrounding a 1 M$_{\odot}$ star that undergoes fragmentation due to self-gravity. We use Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics including a radiative transfer scheme, along with time-dependent chemical evolution code to follow the composition of the disc and resulting fragments over approximately 4000 yrs. Initially, four quasi-stable fragments are formed, of which two are eventually disrupted by tidal torques in the disc. From the results of our chemical modelling, we identify species that are abundant in the fragments (e.g. H$_{\rm 2}$O, H$_{\rm 2}$S, HNO, N$_{\rm 2}$, NH$_{\rm 3}$, OCS, SO), species that are abundant in the spiral shocks within the disc (e.g. CO, CH$_{\rm 4}$, CN, CS, H$_{\rm 2}$CO), and species which are abundant in the circumfragmentary material (e.g. HCO$^{\rm +}$). Our models suggest that in some fragments it is plausible for grains to sediment to the core before releasing their volatiles into the planetary envelope, leading to changes in, e.g., the C/O ratio of the gas and ice components. We would therefore predict that the atmospheric composition of planets generated by gravitational instability should not necessarily follow the bulk chemical composition of the local disc material., 17 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery of an extreme flaring event from Proxima Cen by ASKAP, ALMA, HST, TESS, and the du Pont Telescope that occurred on 2019 May 1. In the millimeter and FUV, this flare is the brightest ever detected, brightening by a factor of >1000 and >14000 as seen by ALMA and HST, respectively. The millimeter and FUV continuum emission trace each other closely during the flare, suggesting that millimeter emission could serve as a proxy for FUV emission from stellar flares and become a powerful new tool to constrain the high-energy radiation environment of exoplanets. Surprisingly, optical emission associated with the event peaks at a much lower level with a time delay. We agree with Gilbert et al. that “environmental management and standards are essential to space mining.” However, we do not agree that national legislation is sufficient for regulating space mining, nor do we inherently expect national laws to help “facilitate sustainable space mining innovation.” In the case of terrestrial mining, differing national laws and regulations, along with weak enforcement, have led to human rights abuses, environmental damage, and adverse health impacts, particularly in the Global South. National regulation of space activity with little to no international involvement has already led to a low Earth orbit debris crisis ([ 1 ][1], [ 2 ][2]), which will likely be exacerbated by the construction of mega-constellations of communications satellites, again under national regulation ([ 3 ][3]). Gilbert et al. argue that the Artemis Accords set the stage for global cooperation and access to space resources for all countries, but these bilateral agreements with just seven close U.S. allies have so far left out the vast majority of nations. The four treaties that make up the core of international space law, to which Gilbert et al. positively refer, were negotiated through a multilateral process. The U.S. approach leaves out Russia, China, and India—all powerful space actors. As for deep seabed mining, the greatest challenge has not been multilateralism, but prohibitively high costs. So far, the International Seabed Authority created under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea has issued exploratory contracts for over 1.3 million square kilometers of the high seas ([ 4 ][4]). Sundahl focuses exclusively on the Artemis Accords without acknowledging the multiple components we discussed that now make up U.S. Space Policy, including the September 2020 announcement that NASA would purchase lunar regolith from a private company. Such a purchase would set a precedent for the U.S. view that commercial space mining is legal—a view not supported by most other nations. Our Policy Forum examines the concerted U.S. effort to secure widespread acceptance of the U.S. preferred interpretation of space law as the international interpretation of space law. We are pleased that NASA partner states ultimately chose not to make the Artemis Accords legally binding. As explicitly non-binding political documents, their effect on existing international law will be limited. At the same time, this means that—legally speaking—the United States might continue to act unilaterally in space, for instance, by pursuing the planned purchase of regolith. Although the Accords make multiple references to an eventual multilateral process, this is not guaranteed and would take place against the backdrop of any U.S. unilateralism. As for the safety zones foreseen in the Artemis Accords, we appreciate that the zones are only meant to be advisory; however, notifying the United Nations of any such zone will have no legitimizing effect in the absence of a multilateral regime for space mining. It also raises the question of how China and other spacefaring nations might regard any safety zones that they choose to establish, now that the United States has opened this door. 1. A planet's orbital orientation relative to an observer's line of sight determines the chord length for a transiting planet, i.e., the projected distance a transiting planet travels across the stellar disc. For a given circular orbit, the chord length determines the transit duration. Changes in the orbital inclination, the direction of the ascending node, or both, can alter this chord length and thus result in transit duration variations (TDVs). Variation of the full orbital inclination vector can even lead to de-transiting or newly transiting planets for a system. We use Laplace-Lagrange secular theory to estimate the fastest nodal eigenfrequencies for over 100 short-period planetary systems. The highest eigenfrequency is an indicator of which systems should show the strongest TDVs. We further explore five cases (TRAPPIST-1, Kepler-11, K2-138, Kepler-445, and Kepler-334) using direct N-body simulations to characterize possible TDVs and to explore whether de-transiting planets could be possible for these systems. A range of initial conditions are explored, with each realization being consistent with the observed transits. We find that tens of percent of multiplanet systems have fast enough eigenfrequencies to expect large TDVs on decade timescales. Among the directly integrated cases, we find that de-transiting planets could occur on decade timescales and TDVs of 10 minutes per decade should be common., To appear in AJ

At the time of formation, protoplanetary discs likely contain a comparable mass to their host protostars. As a result, gravitational instabilities (GIs) are expected to play a pivotal role in the early phases of disc evolution. However, as these young objects are heavily embedded, confirmation of GIs has remained elusive. Therefore, we use the radiative transfer code LIME to produce line images of a $0.17\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ self-gravitating protosolar-like disc. We note the limitations of using LIME and explore methods to improve upon the default gridding. We synthesise noiseless observations to determine the sensitivities required to detect the spiral flux, and find that the line flux distribution does not necessarily correlate to the abundance density distribution; hence performing radiative transfer calculations is imperative. Moreover, the spiral features are seen in absorption, due to the GI-heated midplane and high extinction, which could be indicative of GI activity. If a small beamsize and appropriate molecular line are used then spatially resolving spirals in a protosolar-like disc should be possible with ALMA for an on-source time of 30 hr. Spectrally resolving non-axisymmetric structure takes only a tenth as long for a reasonable noise level, but attributing this structure to GI-induced activity would be tentative. Finally, we find that identifying finger-like features in PV diagrams of nearly edge-on discs, which are a direct indicator of spirals, is feasible with an on-source time of 19 hr, and hence likely offers the most promising means of confirming GI-driven spiral structure in young, embedded protoplanetary discs., Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 23 pages, 25 figures and 2 tables

Recent laboratory efforts (Fu et al., 2014) have constrained the remanent magnetizations of chondrules and the magnetic field strengths at which the chondrules were exposed to as they cooled below their Curie points. An outstanding question is whether the inferred paleofields represent the background magnetic field of the solar nebula or were unique to the chondrule-forming environment. We investigate the amplification of the magnetic field above background values for two proposed chondrule formation mechanisms, large-scale nebular shocks and planetary bow shocks. Behind large-scale shocks, the magnetic field parallel to the shock front is amplified by factors $\sim 10-30$, regardless of the magnetic diffusivity. Therefore, chondrules melted in these shocks probably recorded an amplified magnetic field. Behind planetary bow shocks, the field amplification is sensitive to the magnetic diffusivity. We compute the gas properties behind a bow shock around a 3000 km-radius planetary embryo, with and without atmospheres, using hydrodynamics models. We calculate the ionization state of the hot, shocked gas, including thermionic emission from dust, and thermal ionization of gas-phase potassium atoms, and the magnetic diffusivity due to Ohmic dissipation and ambipolar diffusion. We find that the diffusivity is sufficiently large that magnetic fields have already relaxed to background values in the shock downstream where chondrules acquire magnetizations, and that these locations are sufficiently far from the planetary embryos that chondrules should not have recorded a significant putative dynamo field generated on these bodies. Gravitational instabilities (GIs) are most likely a fundamental process during the early stages of protoplanetary disc formation. Recently, there have been detections of spiral features in young, embedded objects that appear consistent with GI-driven structure. It is crucial to perform hydrodynamic and radiative transfer simulations of gravitationally unstable discs in order to assess the validity of GIs in such objects, and constrain optimal targets for future observations. We utilise the radiative transfer code LIME to produce continuum emission maps of a $0.17\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ self-gravitating protosolar-like disc. We note the limitations of using LIME as is and explore methods to improve upon the default gridding. We use CASA to produce synthetic observations of 270 continuum emission maps generated across different frequencies, inclinations and dust opacities. We find that the spiral structure of our protosolar-like disc model is distinguishable across the majority of our parameter space after 1 hour of observation, and is especially prominent at 230$\,$GHz due to the favourable combination of angular resolution and sensitivity. Disc mass derived from the observations is sensitive to the assumed dust opacities and temperatures, and therefore can be underestimated by a factor of at least 30 at 850$\,$GHz and 2.5 at 90$\,$GHz. As a result, this effect could retrospectively validate GIs in discs previously thought not massive enough to be gravitationally unstable, which could have a significant impact on the understanding of the formation and evolution of protoplanetary discs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 22 pages, 24 figures and 1 table

The growth and migration of planetesimals in a young protoplanetary disc are fundamental to planet formation. In all models of early growth, there are several processes that can inhibit grains from reaching larger sizes. Nevertheless, observations suggest that growth of planetesimals must be rapid. If a small number of 100 km sized planetesimals do manage to form in the disc, then gas drag effects could enable them to efficiently accrete small solids from beyond their gravitationally focused cross-section. This gas drag-enhanced accretion can allow planetesimals to grow at rapid rates, in principle. We present self-consistent hydrodynamics simulations with direct particle integration and gas drag coupling to estimate the rate of planetesimal growth due to pebble accretion. Wind tunnel simulations are used to explore a range of particle sizes and disc conditions. We also explore analytic estimates of planetesimal growth and numerically integrate planetesimal drift due to the accretion of small solids. Our results show that, for almost every case that we consider, there is a clearly preferred particle size for accretion that depends on the properties of the accreting planetesimal and the local disc conditions. For solids much smaller than the preferred particle size, accretion rates are significantly reduced as the particles are entrained in the gas and flow around the planetesimal. Solids much larger than the preferred size accrete at rates consistent with gravitational focusing. Our analytic estimates for pebble accretion highlight the timescales that are needed for the growth of large objects under different disc conditions and initial planetesimal sizes., To appear in MNRAS

TRAPPIST-1 is an ultracool dwarf (UCD) with a system of 7 terrestrial planets, at least three of which orbit in the habitable zone. The radio emission of such low-mass stars is poorly understood; few UCDs have been detected at radio frequencies at all, and the likelihood of detection is only loosely correlated with stellar properties. Relative to other low-mass stars, UCDs with slow rotation such as TRAPPIST-1 tend to be radio dim, whereas rapidly rotating UCDs tend to have strong radio emission - although this is not always the case. We present radio observations of TRAPPIST-1 using ALMA at 97.5 GHz and the VLA at 44 GHz. TRAPPIST-1 was not detected at either frequency and we place $3 \sigma$ upper flux limits of 10.6 and 16.2 $\mu$Jy, respectively. We use our results to constrain the magnetic properties and possible outgoing high energy particle radiation from the star. The presence of radio emission from UCDs is indicative of a stellar environment that could pose a threat to life on surrounding planets. Gyrosynchrotron emission, discernible at frequencies between 20 and 100 GHz, is one of the only processes that can be used to infer the presence of high energy particles released during magnetic reconnection events. Since M dwarfs are frequent hosts of terrestrial planets, characterizing their stellar emission is a crucial part of assessing habitability. Exposure to outgoing high energy particle radiation - traceable by radio flux - can erode planetary atmospheres. While our results do not imply that the TRAPPIST-1 planets are suitable for life, we find no evidence that they are overtly unsuitable due to proton fluxes., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJ

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate a unique sample of orthodontically treated subjects ( N = 114; post-retention = 11.97 years). All subjects were treated by one clinician utilizing a consistent diagnostic and treatment protocol. Subjects were grouped into two distinct groups according to the lower incisor irregularity: group 1, "moderate change" and group 2, "minor change." Statistical analyses were performed at a level of r ≥0.6, p 2 ), posterior face height (at T 2 ), the mandibular plane angle SN-GoGn (at T 2 ), anterior crowding (at T 2 ), and starting age (at T 1 ). It is clearly noted that the vertical dimension features in the equation.

We present Swarm-NG, a C++ library for the efficient direct integration of many n-body systems using highly-parallel Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), such as NVIDIA's Tesla T10 and M2070 GPUs. While previous studies have demonstrated the benefit of GPUs for n-body simulations with thousands to millions of bodies, Swarm-NG focuses on many few-body systems, e.g., thousands of systems with 3...15 bodies each, as is typical for the study of planetary systems. Swarm-NG parallelizes the simulation, including both the numerical integration of the equations of motion and the evaluation of forces using NVIDIA's "Compute Unified Device Architecture" (CUDA) on the GPU. Swarm-NG includes optimized implementations of 4th order time-symmetrized Hermite integration and mixed variable symplectic integration, as well as several sample codes for other algorithms to illustrate how non-CUDA-savvy users may themselves introduce customized integrators into the Swarm-NG framework. To optimize performance, we analyze the effect of GPU-specific parameters on performance under double precision. Applications of Swarm-NG include studying the late stages of planet formation, testing the stability of planetary systems and evaluating the goodness-of-fit between many planetary system models and observations of extrasolar planet host stars (e.g., radial velocity, astrometry, transit timing). We present 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of the collapse of clumps formed through gravitational instability in the outer part of a protoplanetary disc. The initial conditions are taken directly from a global disc simulation, and a realistic equation of state is used to follow the clumps as they contract over several orders of magnitude in density, approaching the molecular hydrogen dissociation stage. The effects of clump rotation, asymmetries, and radiative cooling are studied. Rotation provides support against fast collapse, but non-axisymmetric modes develop and efficiently transport angular momentum outward, forming a circumplanetary disc. This transport helps the clump reach the dynamical collapse phase, resulting from molecular hydrogen dissociation, on a thousand-year timescale, which is smaller than timescales predicted by some previous spherical 1D collapse models. Extrapolation to the threshold of the runaway hydrogen dissociation indicates that the collapse timescales can be shorter than inward migration timescales, suggesting that clumps could survive tidal disruption and deliver a proto-gas giant to distances of even a few AU from the central star.

We use radiation hydrodynamics with direct particle integration to explore the feasibility of chondrule formation in planetary embryo bow shocks. The calculations presented here are used to explore the consequences of a Mars-size planetary embryo traveling on a moderately excited orbit through the dusty, early environment of the solar system. The embryo's eccentric orbit produces a range of supersonic relative velocities between the embryo and the circularly orbiting gas and dust, prompting the formation of bow shocks. Temporary atmospheres around these embryos, which can be created via volatile outgassing and gas capture from the surrounding nebula, can non-trivially affect thermal profiles of solids entering the shock. We explore the thermal environment of solids that traverse the bow shock at different impact radii, the effects that planetoid atmospheres have on shock morphologies, and the stripping efficiency of planetoidal atmospheres in the presence of high relative winds. Simulations are run using adiabatic and radiative conditions, with multiple treatments for the local opacities. Shock speeds of 5, 6, and 7 km/s are explored. We find that a high-mass atmosphere and inefficient radiative conditions can produce peak temperatures and cooling rates that are consistent with the constraints set by chondrule furnace studies. For most conditions, the derived cooling rates are potentially too high to be consistent with chondrule formation., 28 pages, 19 figures

Recent high-resolution, near-infrared images of protoplanetary disks have shown that these disks often present spiral features. Spiral arms are among the structures predicted decades ago by numerical simulations of disk-planet interaction and thus it is tempting to suspect that planetary perturbers are responsible for the observed signatures. However, such interpretation is not free of problems. The spirals are found to have large pitch angles, and in at least one case (HD 100546) the spiral feature appears effectively unpolarized, which implies thermal emission of the order of 1000K (465$\pm$40K at closer inspection). We have recently shown in two-dimensional models that shock dissipation in the supersonic wake of high-mass planets can lead to significant heating if the disk is sufficiently adiabatic. In this paper we extend this analysis to three dimensions in thermodynamically evolving disks. We use the Pencil Code in spherical coordinates for our models, with a prescription for thermal cooling based on the optical depth of the local vertical gas column. We use a 5$M_J$ planet, and show that shocks in the region around the planet where the Lindblad resonances occur heat the gas to substantially higher temperatures than the ambient disk gas at that radius. The gas is accelerated vertically away from the midplane by the shocks to form shock bores, and the gas falling back toward the midplane breaks up into a turbulent surf near the Lindblad resonances. This turbulence, although localized, has high $\alpha$ values, reaching 0.05 in the inner Lindblad resonance, and 0.1 in the outer one. We also find evidence that the disk regions heated up by the planetary shocks eventually becomes superadiabatic, generating convection far from the planet's orbit., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. We present ALMA band 7 (345 GHz) continuum and $^{12}$CO(J = 3-2) observations of the circumstellar disk surrounding HD141569. At an age of about 5 Myr, the disk has a complex morphology that may be best interpreted as a nascent debris system with gas. Our $870\rm~��m$ ALMA continuum observations resolve a dust disk out to approximately $ 56 ~\rm au$ from the star (assuming a distance of 116 pc) with $0."38$ resolution and $0.07 ~ \rm mJy~beam^{-1}$ sensitivity. We measure a continuum flux density for this inner material of $3.8 \pm 0.4 ~ \rm mJy$ (including calibration uncertainties). The $^{12}$CO(3-2) gas is resolved kinematically and spatially from about 30 to 210 au. The integrated $^{12}$CO(3-2) line flux density is $15.7 \pm 1.6~\rm Jy~km~s^{-1}$. We estimate the mass of the millimeter debris and $^{12}$CO(3-2) gas to be $\gtrsim0.04~\rm M_{\oplus}$ and $\sim2\times 10^{-3}~\rm M_{\oplus}$, respectively. If the millimeter grains are part of a collisional cascade, then we infer that the inner disk ($, 35 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ

Until now, axisymmetric, alpha-disc models have been adopted for calculations of the chemical composition of protoplanetary discs. While this approach is reasonable for many discs, it is not appropriate when self-gravity is important. In this case, spiral waves and shocks cause temperature and density variations that affect the chemistry. We have adopted a dynamical model of a solar-mass star surrounded by a massive (0.39 Msun), self-gravitating disc, similar to those that may be found around Class 0 and early Class I protostars, in a study of disc chemistry. We find that for each of a number of species, e.g. H2O, adsorption and desorption dominate the changes in the gas-phase fractional abundance; because the desorption rates are very sensitive to temperature, maps of the emissions from such species should reveal the locations of shocks of varying strengths. The gas-phase fractional abundances of some other species, e.g. CS, are also affected by gas-phase reactions, particularly in warm shocked regions. We conclude that the dynamics of massive discs have a strong impact on how they appear when imaged in the emission lines of various molecular species.

We present high-resolution 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of the formation and evolution of protostellar discs in a turbulent molecular cloud. Using a piecewise polytropic equation of state, we perform two sets of simulations. In both cases we find that isolated systems undergo a fundamentally different evolution than members of binary or multiple systems. When formed, isolated systems must accrete mass and increase their specific angular momentum, leading to the formation of massive, extended discs, which undergo strong gravitational instabilities and are susceptible to disc fragmentation. Fragments with initial masses of 5.5 M_jup, 7.4 M_jup and 12 M_jup are produced in our simulations. In binaries and small clusters, we observe that due to competition for material from the parent core, members do not accrete significant amounts of high specific angular momentum gas relative to isolated systems. We find that discs in multiple systems are strongly self-gravitating but that they are stable against fragmentation due to disc truncation and mass profile steeping by tides, accretion of high specific angular momentum gas by other members, and angular momentum being redirected into members' orbits. In general, we expect disc fragmentation to be less likely in clusters and to be more a feature of isolated systems.

In the early stages of planet formation, small dust grains grow to become millimeter-sized particles in debris disks around stars. These disks can in principle be characterized by their emission at submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths. Determining both the occurrence and abundance of debris in unresolved circumstellar disks of A-type main-sequence stars requires that the stellar photospheric emission be accurately modeled. To better constrain the photospheric emission for such systems, we present observations of Sirius A, an A-type star with no known debris, from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, Submillimeter Array, and Jansky Very Large Array at 0.45, 0.85, 0.88, 1.3, 6.7, and 9.0 mm. We use these observations to inform a PHOENIX model of Sirius A's atmosphere. We find the model provides a good match to these data and can be used as a template for the submillimeter/millimeter emission of other early A-type stars where unresolved debris may be present. The observations are part of an ongoing observational campaign entitled Measuring the Emission of Stellar Atmospheres at Submillimeter/millimeter wavelengths.

We present archival ALMA observations of the HD 141569 circumstellar disk at 345, 230, and 100 GHz. These data detect extended millimeter emission that is exterior to the inner disk. We find through simultaneous visibility modeling of all three data sets that the system's morphology is described well by a two-component disk model. The inner disk ranges from approximately 16 to 45 au with a spectral index of 1.81 (q = 2.95) and the outer disk ranges from 95 to 300 au with a spectral index of 2.28 (q = 3.21). Azimuthally averaged radial emission profiles derived from the continuum images at each frequency show potential emission that is consistent with the visibility modeling. The analysis presented here shows that at ~5 Myr HD 141569's grain size distribution is steeper, and therefore more evolved, in the outer disk than in the inner disk., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ on April 23rd 2018

We explore the initial conditions for fragments in the extended regions ($r\gtrsim 50$ AU) of gravitationally unstable disks. We combine analytic estimates for the fragmentation of spiral arms with 3D SPH simulations to show that initial fragment masses are in the gas giant regime. These initial fragments will have substantial angular momentum, and should form disks with radii of a few AU. We show that clumps will survive for multiple orbits before they undergo a second, rapid collapse due to H$_2$ dissociation and that it is possible to destroy bound clumps by transporting them into the inner disk. The consequences of disrupted clumps for planet formation, dust processing, and disk evolution are discussed. We explore the effects of an undetected outer giant planet on the dynamics, observability, and stability of Systems with Tightly-packed Inner Planets (STIPs). We use direct numerical simulations along with secular theory and synthetic secular frequency spectra to analyze how analogues of Kepler-11 and Kepler-90 behave in the presence of a nearly co-planar, Jupiter-like outer perturber with semi-major axes between 1 and 5.2 au. Most locations of the outer perturber do not affect the evolution of the inner planetary systems, apart from altering precession frequencies. However, there are locations at which an outer planet causes system instability due to, in part, secular eccentricity resonances. In Kepler-90, there is a range of orbital distances for which the outer perturber drives planets b and c, through secular interactions, onto orbits with inclinations that are $\sim16^\circ$ away from the rest of the planets. Kepler-90 is stable in this configuration. Such secular resonances can thus affect the observed multiplicity of transiting systems. We also compare the synthetic apsidal and nodal precession frequencies with the secular theory and find some misalignment between principal frequencies, indicative of strong interactions between the planets (consistent with the system showing TTVs). First-order libration angles are calculated to identify MMRs in the systems, for which two near-MMRs are shown in Kepler-90, with a 5:4 between b and c, as well as a 3:2 between g and h., 17 pages, accepted for publication in AJ

Recent observations of HL Tau revealed remarkably detailed structure within the system's circumstellar disc. A range of hypotheses have been proposed to explain the morphology, including, e.g., planet-disc interactions, condensation fronts, and secular gravitational instabilities. While embedded planets seem to be able to explain some of the major structure in the disc through interactions with gas and dust, the substructure, such as low-contrast rings and bands, are not so easily reproduced. Here, we show that dynamical interactions between three planets (only two of which are modelled) and an initial population of large planetesimals can potentially explain both the major and minor banded features within the system. In this context, the small grains, which are coupled to the gas and reveal the disc morphology, are produced by the collisional evolution of the newly-formed planetesimals, which are ubiquitous in the system and are decoupled from the gas., Comment: To appear in ApJ

Using analytic arguments and numerical simulations, we examine whether chondrule formation and the FU Orionis phenomenon can be caused by the burst-like onset of gravitational instabilities (GIs) in dead zones. At least two scenarios for bursting dead zones can work, in principle. If the disk is on the verge of fragmention, GI activation near $r\sim4$ to 5 AU can produce chondrule-forming shocks, at least under extreme conditions. Mass fluxes are also high enough during the onset of GIs to suggest that the outburst is related to an FU Orionis phenomenon. This situation is demonstrated by numerical simulations. In contrast, as supported by analytic arguments, if the burst takes place close to $r\sim1$ AU, then even low pitch angle spiral waves can create chondrule-producing shocks and outbursts. We also study the stability of the massive disks in our simulations against fragmentation and find that although disk evolution is sensitive to changes in opacity, the disks we study do not fragment, even at high resolution and even for extreme assumptions., To appear in ApJ

Recent three-dimensional radiative hydrodynamics simulations of protoplanetary disks report disparate disk behaviors, and these differences involve the importance of convection to disk cooling, the dependence of disk cooling on metallicity, and the stability of disks against fragmentation and clump formation. To guarantee trustworthy results, a radiative physics algorithm must demonstrate the capability to handle both the high and low optical depth regimes. We develop a test suite that can be used to demonstrate an algorithm's ability to relax to known analytic flux and temperature distributions, to follow a contracting slab, and to inhibit or permit convection appropriately. We then show that the radiative algorithm employed by Mejia and Boley et al. and the algorithm employed by Cai et al. pass these tests with reasonable accuracy. In addition, we discuss a new algorithm that couples flux-limited diffusion with vertical rays, we apply the test suite, and we discuss the results of evolving the Boley et al. disk with this new routine. Although the outcome is significantly different in detail with the new algorithm, we obtain the same qualitative answers. Our disk does not cool fast due to convection, and it is stable to fragmentation. We find an effective α ≈ 10-2. In addition, transport is dominated by low-order modes.

The treatment effects and the short-term (0.9 +/- 0.45 years) relapse potential of phase I slow maxillary expansion, with a bonded palatal expander or a quad-helix appliance combined with a mandibular banded Crozat/lip bumper and followed by 12 to 15 months of retention, were examined.Pretreatment (8.8 +/- 1.7 years) and posttreatment (11.1 +/- 1.7 years) models of 54 patients were used to evaluate treatment effects. Posttreatment (11.0 +/- 1.3 years) and follow-up (11.9 +/- 1.4 years) models of 23 patients who returned for phase II treatment were used to evaluate relapse over the 11 months, during which no retention was used. The models were digitized, and 15 measures were computed.Significant treatment increases were observed for all measurements in both arches. Treatment gains in arch perimeter (6%-8%) were due more to increases in intermolar width (11%-15%) than to increases in arch depth (5%). Posttreatment relapse was significant (P.05) for all measures except mandibular intercanine width and maxillary molar arch depth. After accounting for normal growth, net changes (pretreatment to follow-up) indicated significant increases for all measures except maxillary molar arch depth. In addition to maintaining leeway space, the maxilla and the mandible showed net perimeter gains of 2.9 and 1.0 mm, respectively.Slow maxillary expansion combined with a mandibular banded Crozat/lip bumper during the early mixed dentition produced clinically useful increases in arch dimensions that subsequently underwent mild-to-moderate amounts of relapse after removal of all retention appliances.

The gas equation of state may be one of the critical factors for the disk instability theory of gas giant planet formation. This letter addresses the treatment of H$_2$ in hydrodynamical simulations of gravitationally unstable disks. In our discussion, we point out possible consequences of erroneous specific internal energy relations, approximate specific internal energy relations with discontinuities, and assumptions of constant $\Gamma_1$. In addition, we consider whether the ortho/para ratio for H$_2$ in protoplanetary disks should be treated dynamically as if the species are in equilibrium. Preliminary simulations indicate that the correct treatment is particularly critical for the study of gravitational instability when $T = 30$-50 K., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. To appear in ApJL

To date, most simulations of the chemistry in protoplanetary discs have used 1+1D or 2D axisymmetric $\alpha$-disc models to determine chemical compositions within young systems. This assumption is inappropriate for non-axisymmetric, gravitationally unstable discs, which may be a significant stage in early protoplanetary disc evolution. Using 3D radiative hydrodynamics, we have modelled the physical and chemical evolution of a 0.17 M$_{\odot}$ self-gravitating disc over a period of 2000 yr. The 0.8 M$_{\odot}$ central protostar is likely to evolve into a solar-like star, and hence this Class 0 or early Class I young stellar object may be analogous to our early Solar System. Shocks driven by gravitational instabilities enhance the desorption rates, which dominate the changes in gas-phase fractional abundances for most species. We find that at the end of the simulation, a number of species distinctly trace the spiral structure of our relatively low-mass disc, particularly CN. We compare our simulation to that of a more massive disc, and conclude that mass differences between gravitationally unstable discs may not have a strong impact on the chemical composition. We find that over the duration of our simulation, successive shock heating has a permanent effect on the abundances of HNO, CN and NH$_3$, which may have significant implications for both simulations and observations. We also find that HCO$^+$ may be a useful tracer of disc mass. We conclude that gravitational instabilities induced in lower mass discs can significantly, and permanently, affect the chemical evolution, and that observations with high-resolution instruments such as ALMA offer a promising means of characterising gravitational instabilities in protosolar discs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 19 pages, 17 figures and 5 tables

Recent observations of gaps and non-axisymmetric features in the dust distributions of transition disks have been interpreted as evidence of embedded massive protoplanets. However, comparing the predictions of planet-disk interaction models to the observed features has shown far from perfect agreement. This may be due to the strong approximations used for the predictions. For example, spiral arm fitting typically uses results that are based on low-mass planets in an isothermal gas. In this work, we describe two-dimensional, global, hydrodynamical simulations of disks with embedded protoplanets, with and without the assumption of local isothermality, for a range of planet-to-star mass ratios 1-10 M_jup for a 1 M_sun star. We use the Pencil Code in polar coordinates for our models. We find that the inner and outer spiral wakes of massive protoplanets (M>5 M_jup) produce significant shock heating that can trigger buoyant instabilities. These drive sustained turbulence throughout the disk when they occur. The strength of this effect depends strongly on the mass of the planet and the thermal relaxation timescale; for a 10 M_jup planet embedded in a thin, purely adiabatic disk, the spirals, gaps, and vortices typically associated with planet-disk interactions are disrupted. We find that the effect is only weakly dependent on the initial radial temperature profile. The spirals that form in disks heated by the effects we have described may fit the spiral structures observed in transition disks better than the spirals predicted by linear isothermal theory., 10 pages, 8 figures. We propose that two of the most surprising results so far among exoplanet discoveries are related: the existences of both hot Jupiters and the high frequency of multi-planet systems with periods $P\lesssim200$~days. In this paradigm, the vast majority of stars rapidly form along with multiple close-in planets in the mass range of Mars to super-Earths/mini-Neptunes. Such systems of tightly-packed inner planets (STIPs) are metastable, with the time scale of the dynamical instability having a major influence on final planet types. In most cases, the planets consolidate into a system of fewer, more massive planets, but long after the circumstellar gas disk has dissipated. This can yield planets with masses above the traditional critical core of $\sim$10 $M_\oplus$, yielding short-period giants that lack abundant gas. A rich variety of physical states are also possible given the range of collisional outcomes and formation time of the close-in planets. However, when dynamical consolidation occurs before gas dispersal, a critical core can form that then grows via gas capture into a short-period gas giant. In this picture the majority of Hot and Warm Jupiters formed locally, rather than migrating down from larger distances., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Observational studies show that the probability of finding gas giant planets around a star increases with the star's metallicity. Our latest simulations of disks undergoing gravitational instabilities (GIs) with realistic radiative cooling indicate that protoplanetary disks with lower metallicity generally cool faster and thus show stronger overall GI-activity. More importantly, the global cooling times in our simulations are too long for disk fragmentation to occur, and the disks do not fragment into dense protoplanetary clumps. Our results suggest that direct gas giant planet formation via disk instabilities is unlikely to be the mechanism that produced most observed planets. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the long-term differences in soft tissue profile changes between extraction and nonextraction patients who had been treated to the same incisor position and lip line.Twenty extraction and 20 matched nonextraction patients, with posttreatment and long-term follow-up (average 15 years) records, were selected from a single private orthodontic practice. Posttreatment and long-term follow-up profile photos of the patients' nose, lip, and chin areas were evaluated by 105 orthodontists and 225 laypeople, who indicated their preferences and the amount of change they perceived among the 40 profiles. The patients had similar dental protrusion, soft tissue profile measurements, and ages at the posttreatment observation.No significant cephalometric differences between the extraction and nonextraction groups were found at long-term follow-up; both groups showed similar long-term changes. Significant (P.05) differences were found between males and females at long-term follow-up; male lips became relatively more retrusive, and their profiles became flatter. Significant (P.05) changes in the profiles were also perceived over time, but there was no relationship between the amount of change perceived and profile changes measured cephalometrically. There were also no significant (P.05) differences in preferences between orthodontists and laypeople, between extraction and nonextraction patients, or between males and females.If extraction and nonextraction patients are treated to the same incisor position and lip line, the treatment modality does not affect long-term soft tissue profile changes. Furthermore, the amounts of change perceived by either orthodontists or laypeople were not related to the amount of change measured cephalometrically.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term postretention stability of rapid palatal expansion-lip bumper therapy followed by full fixed appliances.The sample included 20 treated patients (11 women and 9 men) who were recalled to obtain postretention records. The subjects were out of retention for a minimum of 4 years and an average of 7.9 years. They had begun treatment in the late mixed dentition at a mean age of 11.1 with considerable incisor crowding but, on average, no tooth size-arch length discrepancies. Pretreatment, posttreatment (mean age, 13.6 years), and postretention (mean age, 24.3 years) models were digitized, and the computed measurements were compared with untreated reference data.The majority of treatment increases in maxillary and mandibular arch dimensions were statistically significant (P.05) and greater than expected for untreated controls. Although many measurements decreased postretention, net gains were maintained for 21 of the 30 measurements evaluated. The notable exception was arch perimeter, which decreased to less than pretreatment values. Postretention incisor irregularity increased 0.5 +/- 1.2 mm in the maxillary arch and 1.1 +/- 1.5 mm in the mandibular arch.Based on the good long-term stability observed in this study, we concluded that use of rapid palatal expansion-lip bumper expansion therapy in the late mixed dentition followed by full fixed appliances is an effective form of treatment for patients with up to moderate tooth size-arch length discrepancies.

The large number of detected giant exoplanets offers the opportunity to improve our understanding of the formation mechanism, evolution, and interior structure of gas giant planets. The two main models for giant planet formation are core accretion and disk instability. There are substantial differences between these formation models, including formation timescale, favorable formation location, ideal disk properties for planetary formation, early evolution, planetary composition, etc. First, we summarize the two models including their substantial differences, advantages, and disadvantages, and suggest how theoretical models should be connected to available (and future) data. We next summarize current knowledge of the internal structures of solar- and extrasolar- giant planets. Finally, we suggest the next steps to be taken in giant planet exploration.
