In the present work, a new hydrazone compound, namely N'-[(Z)-(4-chlorophenyl)methylidene]-2-(5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)acetohydrazide, noted HTH, was selected to protect carbon steel against corrosion in 1.0 mol/L HCl. Different chemical, electrochemical, and surface characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscope coupled with X-ray energy dispersion (SEM/EDX) were used to investigate the corrosion inhibition performance. Electrochemical data showed that the effectiveness of the inhibitor improved with increasing concentration, reaching 98% at the optimal concentration of 10-3 mol/L. The results of potentiodynamic polarization measurements showed that hydrazone acted as a mixed-type inhibitor. The EIS results showed an increase in polarization resistance accompanied by a noticeable decrease in Ceff,dl values. In the temperature range of 303 K-333 K, hydrazone protected carbon steel by 89%, showing high resistance to temperature effect. The analysis of the steel surface by SEM/EDX confirmed that the effectiveness of the hydrazone was attributed to the formation of a protective layer on the surface of the metal. Quantum chemical calculations revealed insights into the chemical reactivity of the tested hydrazone while first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation supported the experimental conclusions and showed outstanding adsorption ability of HTH on the Fe(110) surface. First-principles DFT simulations showed that the HTH molecule was more stable in a parallel adsorption mode.

In this study, 1,5-diallyl-1H-pyrazolo [3,4-d] pyrimidin-4 (5H)-one (PPD) was evaluated as an anticorrosion agent for mild steel (MS) in 1 M HCl. The analysis was performed by weight loss (WL), potentiodynamic polarization measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The Tafel polarization showed that PPD is a mixed-type inhibitor and reaches 94% of the protective efficiency at 10−3 M. EIS results indicated that the resistance to charge transfer increases with increasing inhibitor concentration and the corrosion of MS is controlled by a charge transfer process. The inhibitor adsorption on the MS surface obeyed the Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated to elaborate the corrosion inhibition mechanism. The micrographic analysis revealed the existence of a barrier layer on the electrode surface with the presence of PPD. Theoretical examinations performed by electronic/atomic computer simulations confirmed that the obtained results were found to be consistent with experimental findings.

Essential oil from aerial parts of Artemisia herba-alba from Morocco was hydrodistilled and its chemical composition oil was investigated by capillary GC and GC/MS. The major components were 1,8-cineole (35.6%) and camphor (24.1%). Artemisia herba-alba essential oil AHAO was tested as corrosion inhibitor of stainless steel (SS) in 1M H3PO4 using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements (EIS) and scanning electronically microscopy (SEM) studies. The results obtained showed that the essential oil of Artemisia reduces the corrosion rate. Tafel polarization method indicates that the plant extract behaves as a mixed type inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency increased with inhibitor concentration to attain 88% at 1 g.L−1 of oil at 298 K. Nyquist diagrams obtained from impedance studies provide results confirming the anti-corrosion effect of the studied plant. The temperature effect on the corrosion behavior of (SS) in 1M H3PO4 without and with AHAO at 1 g.L−1 was studied in the temperature range from 298 to 353 K. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that the adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic process and support physical adsorption mechanism. The experimental data fits well into the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. SEM/EDS studies provide the confirmatory evidence for the protection of (SS) by the green inhibitor. The influence of temperature (20–80°C) on the electrochemical behaviour of passive films anodically formed on UB6 stainless steel in phosphoric acid solution (5.5 M H3PO4) has been examined by using potentiodynamic curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and Mott-Schottky analysis. UB6 stainless steel in contaminated phosphoric acid is characterised by high interfacial impedance, thereby, illustrating its high corrosion resistance. The obtained results show that the films behave as n-type and p-type semiconductors in the potential range above and below the flat band potential, respectively. This behaviour is assumed to be the consequence of the semiconducting properties of the iron oxide and chromium oxide regions which compose the passive film.

Phytochemical-rich natural extracts have recently attracted intense attention as green corrosion inhibitors and costly benign coating components for the protection of metallic structures of immense commercial importance. Herein, various methods were applied to assess the corrosion protection efficiency of a methanolic extract of parsley (Petroselinum crispum) (PCE) on carbon steel C37 in 1 M HCl. Initially, the chemical profile of PCE was analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and myristicin and apiol were identified as the main components. The results from the weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) techniques revealed a substantial reduction in the corrosion rate upon the use of PCE, with a maximum inhibition efficiency of 92% at 1 g L−1 PCE. To optimize the performance, the corrosion behavior was investigated over a temperature range of 303–333 K and for concentrations of 0.1–1 g L−1. The inhibition effectiveness increased at higher concentrations of PCE, whilst it decreased when the temperature was elevated. The query suggests that the adsorption process involves both physical and chemical mechanisms. The adsorption of PCE onto C37 was well described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The data were used to determine the activation energy and thermodynamic parameters. The PCE coating acted as a mixed-type inhibitor, hampering both cathodic and anodic corrosion reactions. SEM further confirmed the formation of a protective coating film on the steel surface when exposed to PCE. UV-Vis and XRD were implemented to understand the inhibition mechanism and formed products at the microscopic and spectroscopic levels. Hence, the green PCE inhibitor may potentially be applied in corrosion mitigation due to its high corrosion protection efficacy and its environmentally benign nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
