The Erasmus + Project Initiative began for the first time in 2014, but this was not the first time that the Erasmus project strategy came into being. This publication aims to understand its origins and the reasoning behind this particular initiative. It analyses the fundamental steps taken towards the creation of the Erasmus + Project Strategy and how it has helped shape a European Identity.

In relation to a thesis put forward by Marx Wartofsky, we seek to show that a historiography of mathematics requires an analysis of the ontology of the part of mathematics under scrutiny. Following Ian Hacking, we point out that in the history of mathematics the amount of contingency is larger than is usually thought. As a case study, we analyze the historians' approach to interpreting James Gregory's expression ultimate terms in his paper attempting to prove the irrationality of pi. Here Gregory referred to the last or ultimate terms of a series. More broadly, we analyze the following questions: which modern framework is more appropriate for interpreting the procedures at work in texts from the early history of infinitesimal analysis? as well as the related question: what is a logical theory that is close to something early modern mathematicians could have used when studying infinite series and quadrature problems? We argue that what has been routinely viewed from the viewpoint of classical analysis as an example of an "unrigorous" practice, in fact finds close procedural proxies in modern infinitesimal theories. Did Leibniz exploit infinitesimals and infinities `a la rigueur, or only as shorthand for quantified propositions that refer to ordinary Archimedean magnitudes? Chapter 5 in (Ishiguro 1990) is a defense of the latter position, which she reformulates in terms of Russellian logical fictions. Ishiguro does not explain how to reconcile this interpretation with Leibniz's repeated assertions that infinitesimals violate the Archimedean property, viz., Euclid's Elements, V.4. We present textual evidence from Leibniz, as well as historical evidence from the early decades of the calculus, to undermine Ishiguro's interpretation. Leibniz frequently writes that his infinitesimals are useful fictions, and we agree; but we shall show that it is best not to understand them as logical fictions; instead, they are better understood as pure fictions. In On Local Motion in the Two New Sciences, Galileo distinguishes between ‘time’ and ‘quanto time’ to justify why a variation in speed has the same properties as an interval of time. In this essay, I trace the occurrences of the word quanto to define its role and specific meaning. The analysis shows that quanto is essential to Galileo’s mathematical study of infinitesimal quantities and that it is technically defined. In the light of this interpretation of the word quanto, Evangelista Torricelli’s theory of indivisibles can be regarded as a natural development of Galileo’s insights about infinitesimal magnitudes, transformed into a geometrical method for calculating the area of unlimited plane figures.

article i nfo Mitral valve (MV) is composed of several structures working in synchrony to open during diastole and close in systole within the high-pressure systemic environment. Its morphological features ensure a normal leaflet closure that prevents regurgitation of blood back into the left atrium causing loss of ventricular pressure and forward flow. The complex interactions of the normal MV are reliant on each component playing a complete role for the efficient working of the valve. In this review we firstly discuss the overall MV structure in terms of a complex make up of the annulus, the leaflets, their tendinous cords, and the supporting papillary muscles, and then the anatomical changes of each MV components due to left ventricular geometry and function alterations, underlying functional mitral regurgitation.

Objective The main objective of the study was to examine the relation of different biological markers to a variety of pleasant and unpleasant psychobiosocial (PBS) states in response to precompetitive stress in sport. Design A longitudinal design was adopted to assess biological markers and PBS states before several games. Method A whole team of high-level professional basketball players (9 men, aged from 23 to 37 years) took part in the study. The biological measures included the salivary concentration of testosterone, cortisol, aamylase, and chromogranin A. The psychological measures involved emotional, cognitive, motivational, bodily, kinesthetic, performance, and communicative components of PBS states assessed according to the dimensions of their intensity, frequency, and direction (i.e., perceived effect on performance). Assessment was conducted within 1 h prior to competition on an approximately weekly basis across the whole championship for a total of 12 games played at the team's home. Results A series of canonical correlation analyses showed that an increase in the salivary concentration of biological variables was associated with enhanced intensity and frequency scores of pleasant PBS states, as well as enhanced directional values (i.e., perception of facilitative effects) of a range of both pleasant and unpleasant PBS states. Conclusion Findings suggest that elevation of testosterone, cortisol, α-amylase, and chromogranin A in basketball players prior to competition can have a perceived functional effect with respect to the upcoming performance.

Summary Introduction Several studies have shown that activation of the sympathetic nervous system results in the increased secretion of a-amylase (sAA), an enzyme produced by salivary glands. Recently, chromogranin A (CgA), a soluble protein costored and coreleased with catecholamines from the adrenal medulla and sympathetic nerve endings, has been proposed as a marker of sympathoadrenal medullary system (SAM) activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the behaviour of salivary chromogranin A (sCgA) and sAA during high-intensity exercise and to analyse their possible correlation with cardiovascular and psychological parameters. Methods Before and during a standardized treadmill stress test, and at 5, 15 and 30 min during the recovery phase, sCgA and sAA were monitored in 21 healthy men. The double product (DP) of blood pressure and heart rate responses, and the product of the subjective ratings of perceived exertion recorded at the final step (RPE) and the exercise duration were used as indices of cardiovas- cular and exercise intensity, respectively. A blood glucose (BG) fall after an oral glucose load has never been described previously at a population level. This study was aimed at looking for a plasma glucose trend after an oral glucose load for possible blood glucose fall if any, and for its impact on coronary mortality at a population level.In subjects from an unselected general population, BG and insulin were detected before and 1 and 2h after a 75-g oral glucose load for insulin sensitivity and β-cell function determination. Blood pressure, blood examinations and left ventricular mass were measured, and mortality was monitored for 18.8±7.7 years. According to discriminant analysis, the population was stratified into cluster 0 (1-h BGfasting BG; n=497) and cluster 1 (1-h BG ≥ fasting BG; n=1733). To avoid any interference of age and sex, statistical analysis was limited to two age-gender-matched cohorts of 490 subjects from each cluster (n=940). Subjects in cluster 0 showed significantly higher insulin sensitivity and β-cell function, lower visceral adiposity and lower blood pressure values. Adjusted coronary mortality was 8 times lower in cluster 0 than 1 (p0.001). The relative risk of belonging to cluster 1 was 5.40 (95% CI 2.22-13.1).It seems that two clusters exist in the general population with respect to their response to an oral glucose load, independent of age and gender. Subjects who respond with a BG decrease could represent a privileged sub-population, where insulin sensitivity and β-cell function are better, some risk factors are less prevalent, and coronary mortality is lower.

The protein kinase C (PKC) family of enzymes is a regulator of transmembrane signal transduction, and involvement of some PKC isoforms in T-cell activation has been demonstrated. Nevertheless, very little is known about their involvement in the Amyloid beta (Abeta)-dependent molecular signals in the T lymphocytes of Alzheimer disease (AD) patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of PKC-alpha, PKC-delta and PKC-zeta expression and activity in the signaling machinery activated in Abeta-reactive T cells, in adult healthy individuals, elderly healthy subjects, and from patients with AD. The results show that in peripheral T-cells from early AD patients, Abeta(1-42) produced a distinct subpopulation highly expressing P-PKC-delta, while in severe AD patients the same treatment induced two distinct P-PKC-delta and P-PKC-zeta T-cell subpopulations. Such subpopulations were not noticeable following CD3/CD28 treatment of the same samples or after treatment of peripheral T cells from healthy adult or elderly subjects with Abeta(1-42) or with CD3/CD28. We believe that these findings may be of help in possible attempts to develop further diagnostic strategies useful for the characterization of AD.

The question on whether the electrocardiographic criteria are reliable for detection of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and play a role in predicting outcome is open. Answer can only proceed from population-based studies over unselected people followed up for years. In this study, 1,699 subjects from general population underwent echocardiogram and standard electrocardiogram (ECG) codified for LVH with Minnesota code and with other five methods. Other items were also recorded and used as covariables. Left ventricular mass index (LVMI) was 127.6 +/- 44.9 g m(-2) in men and 120.8 +/- 41.2 g m(-2 )in women, and correlated directly with age in both genders. Prevalence of echocardiographic LVH was 36.6% in men and 53.4% in women. LVMI correlated directly with the Sokolow-Lyon score in both genders at any age, with the Romhilt-Estes, Cornell and R(aVL) scores in all subjects but elderly men, and with the Lewis score in men and women agedor =69 years. Sensitivity and the predictive value of electrocardiographic tests, as well as the prevalence of LVH diagnosed with electrocardiographic criteria, were always low. Specificity was high for all the tests, and in particular for the Cornell index. Only when diagnosed with echocardiogram or with the Sokolow-Lyon criterion, LVH was an independent predictor of mortality. We conclude that electrocardiographic tests cannot be used as a surrogate of echocardiogram in detecting LVH in the general population because their positive predictive value (PPV) is unacceptably low. On the contrary, they could replace echocardiography in the follow up and for prediction of outcome, when LVH has previously been correctly diagnosed with other methods.

OBJECTIVES: The 825T allele of the GNB3 gene is implicated in adipose distribution, predisposing to obesity and hypertension. Menopause is also considered a condition leading to excess adiposity and hypertension. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether the effects of menopause on body weight and blood pressure are influenced by the C825T polymorphism of the GNB3 gene. METHODS: The study involved 1339 subjects (43% men) aged 18-95 years, genotyped at the GNB3 825 locus, undergoing, in an epidemiological population-based frame, questionnaire, anthropometrics and blood examinations. RESULTS: Mean skinfold thickness (MST), truncal obesity and excess subcutaneous adiposity (MST greater than median) were higher in women than in men. A significant interaction was detected between menopausal status and the C825T polymorphism (Pint > 0.0001). MST, truncal obesity and excess subcutaneous adiposity were lower in CC fertile than menopausal women, but were comparable in TT fertile and menopausal women. In a multivariate logistic model for excess subcutaneous adiposity, the relative risk of menopause was 4.12 (95% confidence interval 2.35-7.22) in CC women but was insignificant in the other two genotypes. In fertile women only, higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) was detected in TT than in CC genotypes. CONCLUSION: An interaction exists between the C825T polymorphism and menopause in controlling body adiposity and blood pressure in women. Adiposity and SBP are higher in menopausal than in fertile women, provided they have the CC genotype. TT fertile women show the same adiposity as those in menopause. Men have the same excess adiposity as menopausal women, independent of the GNB3 genotype.

The protein kinase C (PKC) family of enzymes is a regulator of transmembrane signal transduction. There is evidence demonstrating altered activity of some PKC isoforms (PKC-α, PKC-δ and PKC-ζ) in the neurons of brains of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) sufferers, but little is known about their involvement in the intracellular machinery of amyloid β protein-reactive T lymphocytes in AD. By applying a modified “split-well culture system” for Aβ1–42 reactivity, we carried out flow cytometry analysis and biochemical investigations on the possible involvement of PKC-α, PKC-δ and PKC-ζ in the signalling system activated in Aβ-reactive T cells purified from peripheral blood mononucleate cells (PBMC) from healthy subjects and patients with AD. Flow cytometry analysis of Aβ1–42 activated T lymphocytes in the majority of AD patients highlighted a distinct cellular cluster highly expressing phospho-PKC-δ (P-PKC-δ), while most full-blown AD patients highly expressed two distinct P-PKC-δ and phospho-PKC-ζ (P-PKC-ζ) bright sub-populations. The same investigation performed in freshly purified peripheral T lymphocytes, did not highlight any subpopulation, suggesting that the detection of P-PKC-δ and P-PKC-ζ bright subpopulations is specifically linked to Aβ1–42 activated T lymphocytes. The data presented here, therefore, suggest possible novel hallmarks to discriminate between healthy elderly subjects and beginning or full-blown Alzheimer's Disease patients.

Menopausal transition leads to increased risk of non-communicable chronic diseases, which are characterized by endothelial disruption and dysfunction. Aerobic physical exercise determines an increase of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a signal protein that stimulates angiogenesis, and recent studies suggest a direct correlation between exercise intensity and VEGF production (1). However, high intensity training is often not recommended for postmenopausal women as a result of cardiovascular and orthopaedic contraindications. The aim of the study was to determine if exercising at the same intensity (i.e. moderate intensity) but involving a more extended muscle mass might induce higher circulating levels of VEGF. Nordic Walking (NW), a form of physical activity where the active use of a pair of dedicated poles is added to regular walking, was compared to walking training (WT). Thirty postmenopausal women were enrolled in the study (57.93±3.55 years old) and randomly assigned to WT (n=15) and NW (n=15). Serum VEGF levels were determined by ELISA before and after exercise training, consisting in three workouts of 40-50 minutes for 13 weeks at intensity between 11 and 13 of a 15-category scale of the ratings of the perceived exertion. The only difference was the use of poles with appropriated technique in NW group. RM-ANOVA with repeated measure for the factor time revealed an effect for time (P=.01) and an interaction effect time x group (P=.041). Post-hoc analysis, consisting in a paired sample t-test for each group, showed that NW increased VEGF whereas WT showed only a tendency (WT: T0=39.68±2.90 T1=40.22±2.56, P=.012; NW: T0=38.22±1.60 T1=42.52±5.97, P=.57). In conclusion, independently from exercise intensity, NW seems to increase VEGF more efficiently than WT, probably as a result of a larger capillary bed actively involved by exercising muscles.
