This study investigates how parental language ideologies and attitudes shape Family Language Policy (FLP) in Italian transnational families in the UK. There has been an increasing interest in FLP research in recent years; however, the Italian community in the UK is under-studied. This exploratory study aimed at investigating how language ideologies in Italian transnational families affect language practices and management. The findings suggest that language ideologies such as the ‘bilingual advantage’ have a significant impact on language practices and management in the family domain. However, language ideologies are not always in line with language practices with conflicting language ideologies being more common in mixed marriage families. Additionally, the study offers new insights into the complexities of emotions surrounding FLP and bilingual upbringing as well as how parental future aspirations can shape FLP. Further research is suggested with regards to the role that siblings' dynamics can play on the negotiation of FLP as well as longitudinal research which will offer insights into the constantly evolving linguistic environment of transnational families.

Fishing tourism, a niche yet burgeoning sector within the broader tourism industry, presents a unique opportunity to explore the dynamics of the Experience Economy. This study delves into the intricacies of fishing tourism through the lens of data science, leveraging web crawling techniques to gather extensive data from reviewer profiles on TripAdvisor. By employing natural language processing (NLP) techniques, the study investigates the correlation between Experience Economy dimensions and user profiling aspects within this domain. The findings of this study shed light on the predominant dimensions of the Experience Economy within fishing tourism. “Entertainment” emerges as the primary dimension, closely followed by “Aesthetic”, “Educational”, and “Escapist” elements. Notably, the study reveals frequent co-occurrences of certain dimension pairs, such as “Entertainment”–“Aesthetic” and “Educational”–“Entertainment”, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the fishing tourism experience. The implications of this research extend beyond academic discourse to practical considerations for stakeholders in the fishing tourism sector. By highlighting the socioeconomic benefits inherent in fishing tourism for local communities and fishers, the study emphasizes the importance of governmental support. This support, in the form of infrastructure development, effective leadership, legislative measures, and financial backing, is deemed essential for fostering sustainable growth and development in this sector. This study stands as a pioneering endeavor within the realm of fishing tourism research, particularly in its focus on Experience Economy dimensions and user profiling. By drawing data from both business pages and user profiles on TripAdvisor, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between tourist experiences and the broader economic and social landscape of fishing tourism destinations.

Cette étude présente les résultats obtenus lors de l’utilisation de la sciure de bois pour l’élimination du plomb contenu dans les eaux usées. Les propriétés de sorption ont été déterminées en régime discontinu. Les résultats des essais montrent qu’un gramme de sciure de bois activé peut fixer 40,04 mg/g de plomb selon le modèle de Langmuir, 1er version, avec une cinétique du pseudo premier ordre, où le temps d’équilibre est de 10 minutes. Les mesures réalisées révèlent aussi, que la diffusion externe contrôle la vitesse du processus globale de la sorption. La diffusion dans les pores ne présente pas l’unique mécanisme réactionnel limitant cette cinétique, ce mécanisme est basé aussi sur l’échange cationique, où les ions de bases jouent un rôle très important. En dernier, on montre que cette sorption est spontanée (G < 0) jusqu'à 40 °C, exothermique (H < 0) et aucun changement n’a été effectué au niveau de la structure de la sciure de bois (S < 0).

(1) Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate preservice Physical Education (PE) teachers’ resistance to change during their school practicum based on their occupational orientation profiles (between-subject factors: type of sport experience and role orientation in teaching) after controlling their self-esteem. (2) Methods: 235 preservice PE teachers (male = 118), undergraduate students at the University of Athens, Greece, completed the resistance to change scale and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale online. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was conducted to establish the between-subject factor differences in the four dimensions of the resistance to change scale. (3) Results: The results showed that the preservice PE teachers with experience in individual sports reported higher levels of emotional response during practicum compared to those involved in team sports. No other differences proved statistically significant. The results of the present study should be used as a point of reference for shaping the discussion about the concept of resistance to change in teacher education programs.

Systemic inflammation has been recognized as the cause and consequence of metabolic dysregulation in diabetes mellitus (DM). Presepsin has recently emerged as a promising biomarker for the detection of bacterial infections and sepsis. There is evidence that gut dysbiosis results in the increased circulating concentrations of Gram-negative bacteria lipopolysaccharide, the linkage of presepsin, which in turn promotes insulin resistance and correlates with the risk of diabetic complications. Thus, we hypothesized that presepsin could reflect the magnitude of systemic inflammation and metabolic decompensation in patients with DM even in the absence of infection. In this cross-sectional pilot study, we included 75 infection-free individuals with well-controlled (n = 19) and uncontrolled (n = 23) type 2 diabetes (T2D), well-controlled (n = 10) and uncontrolled (n = 10) type 1 diabetes (T1D), and normoglycemic controls (n = 13). Presepsin levels were compared between the groups and potential associations with demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were explored. We observed that the duration of DM was associated with presepsin values (p = 0.008). When the participants were classified into the type of DM groups, the presepsin levels were found to be lower in the patients with T2D compared to those with T1D (p = 0.008). However, significance in that case was driven by the difference between the well-controlled groups. After adjusting for the effects of DM duration, presepsin was significantly lower in the well-controlled T2D group compared to the well-controlled T1D group [1.34 (2.02) vs. 2.22 (4.20) ng/mL, p = 0.01]. Furthermore, we adjusted our findings for various confounders, including age, body mass index, and waist circumference, and found that the difference in the presepsin values between the adequately controlled groups remained significant (p = 0.048). In conclusion, our findings suggest that presepsin could potentially serve as a surrogate marker of inflammation and metabolic control in people with DM.

The swift development of autonomous vehicles raises the necessity of semantically mapping the environment by producing distinguishable representations to recognise similar areas. To this end, in this article, we present an efficient technique to cut up a robot’s trajectory into semantically consistent communities based on graph-inspired descriptors. This allows an agent to localise itself in future tasks under different environmental circumstances in an urban area. The proposed semantic grouping technique utilizes the Leiden Community Detection Algorithm (LeCDA), which is a novel and efficient method of low computational complexity and exploits semantic and topometric information from the observed scenes. The presented experimentation was carried out on a novel dataset from the city of Xanthi, Greece (dubbed as Gryphonurban urban dataset), which was recorded by RGB-D, IMU and GNSS sensors mounted on a moving vehicle. Our results exhibit the formulation of a semantic map with visually coherent communities and the realisation of an effective localisation mechanism for autonomous vehicles in urban environments.

This research ventures into the critical public health challenge of childhood obesity by exploring the dynamic interplay between psychological well-being and Body Mass Index (BMI) throughout various developmental stages of childhood. It delves into how emotional regulation, attachment dynamics, and social relationships correlate with obesity from early childhood to adolescence. Highlighting key findings, such as the negative correlation between psychological resilience and higher BMI in young children, the impact of social relationships on obesity risk during pre-adolescence, and the link between adaptive emotional strategies and higher BMI in adolescents, this study brings to the fore the nuanced relationship between psychological factors and obesity. Psychological metrics in this study were obtained via referenced questionnaires, leading up to the utilization of the interdisciplinary process of bioinformatics. Utilizing the interdisciplinary process of bioinformatics, this research synergizes psychometric and biomedical data to unearth psychological markers critical for crafting targeted, age-appropriate interventions. This study advocates for a holistic healthcare approach, emphasizing the integration of psychological support within obesity prevention and management strategies, thereby underscoring the indispensable role of psychological factors in the fight against childhood obesity. The application of bioinformatics methods to analyze complex datasets demonstrates how collaboration across medical specialties can enrich our understanding and response to childhood obesity, contributing significantly to the development of comprehensive, bioinformatics-enhanced healthcare solutions.

Background: Development of insecticide resistance (IR) in sand fly populations is an issue of public health concern, threatening leishmaniasis mitigation efforts by insecticide-based vector control. There is a major knowledge gap in the IR status of wild populations worldwide, possibly attributed to the unavailability of specialized tools, such as bioassay protocols, species baseline susceptibility to insecticides and molecular markers, to monitor such phenomena in sand flies. Methodology/Principal findings: Sand fly populations from (semi-)rural regions of Greece, Turkey and Iran were sampled and identified to species, showing populations' structure in accordance with previously reported data. Genotyping of known pyrethroid resistance-associated loci revealed the occurrence of voltage-gated sodium channel (vgsc) mutations in all surveyed countries. Knock-down resistance (kdr) mutation L1014F was prevalent in Turkish regions and L1014F and L1014S were recorded for the first time in Iran, and in Turkey and Greece, respectively, yet in low frequencies. Moreover, CDC bottle bioassays against pyrethroids in mixed species populations from Greece indicated full susceptibility, using though the mosquito discriminating doses. In parallel, we established a novel individual bioassay protocol and applied it comparatively among distinct Phlebotomus species' populations, to detect any possible divergent species-specific response to insecticides. Indeed, a significantly different knock-down rate between P. simici and P. perfiliewi was observed upon exposure to deltamethrin. Conclusions/Significance: IR in sand flies is increasingly reported in leishmaniasis endemic regions, highlighting the necessity to generate additional monitoring tools, that could be implemented in relevant eco-epidemiological settings, in the context of IR management. Our molecular and phenotypic data add to the IR map in an area with otherwise limited data coverage. Author summary: Phlebotomine sand flies transmit leishmaniasis to humans and animals, a neglected tropical disease of the (sub-)tropics, currently expanding though in previously non-endemic regions. As leishmaniasis eradication largely relies on vectors' insecticidal control, regular monitoring of insecticide resistance (IR) is a core element of integrated vector management. IR data are limited in sand fly populations worldwide though, due to the unavailability of robust molecular diagnostic and phenotyping tools, as well as deficiencies in human resources, appropriate training and capacity building. Here, we aim to characterise the pyrethroid resistance status of populations originating from countries of the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East; i.e. Greece, Turkey and Iran. Pyrethroid resistance-associated mutations were detected in all three countries, while the populations from Greece exhibited susceptibility upon exposure to deltamethrin in CDC bioassays. We established an individual bioassay protocol to enable IR monitoring in settings with multi-species population structure, and applied it comparatively among three distinct Phlebotomus species, revealing that they respond differently to insecticide treatment. Our study contributes data for sustainable evidence-based sand fly control, and highlights the importance of systematic IR surveillance programs in leishmaniasis endemic regions. In this paper, I propose a way of systemic work through art and specifically through theatrical practice in order to prompt this kind of creative writing called spontaneous writing. In the Improvisational Experiential Theatre method that I practise, spontaneous writing is prompted by theatrical improvisations. The writings of the group members compose a play, which is brought before a theatre audience. Systemic practitioners often use writing in their work with people in order to help them to express themselves. Spontaneous writing which aims for the creation of a theatrical play triggers the group members to release their deeper thoughts, their feelings and their body, and to express themselves mostly poetically. It creates the space that helps them to connect with society, writing about social issues that touch everyone. And when these persons, who are not actors, present their own play on a stage, they see themselves as protagonists in their lives and at the same time as active members of society. I hope that this paper will motivate systemic practitioners to use the art, in any form, in their work with people. Στην μέθοδο Αυτοσχεδιαστικού Βιωματικού Θεάτρου που εφαρμόζω, η αυθόρμητη γραφή κινητοποιείται από θεατρικούς αυτοσχεδιασμούς. Τα κείμενα των μελών της ομάδας συνθέτουν ένα θεατρικό έργο, που το παρουσιάζουν στο κοινό.
