1. Machine Learning-Driven Analytical Models for Threshold Displacement Energy Prediction in Materials

Abstract: Understanding the behavior of materials under irradiation is crucial for the design and safety of nuclear reactors, spacecraft, and other radiation environments. The threshold displacement energy (Ed) is a critical parameter for understanding radiation damage in materials, yet its determination often relies on costly experiments or simulations. This work leverages the machine learning-based Sure Independence Screening and Sparsifying Operator (SISSO) method to derive accurate, analytical models for predicting Ed using fundamental material properties. The models outperform traditional approaches for monoatomic materials, capturing key trends with high accuracy. While predictions for polyatomic materials highlight challenges due to dataset complexity, they reveal opportunities for improvement with expanded data. This study identifies cohesive energy and melting temperature as key factors influencing Ed, offering a robust framework for efficient, data-driven predictions of radiation damage in diverse materials., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. Abstract: The ductile-brittle transition behaviour of organo modified montmorillonite-based Poly(lactic acid) films (PLA/o-MMT) was analysed using the Essential Work of Fracture (EWF) methodology, Small Punch Tests (SPT) and Enthalpy relaxation analysis. While the EWF methodology could only be applied successfully to de-aged samples, small punch test (SPT) was revealed as more effective for a mechanical characterization during the transient behaviour from ductile to brittle. According to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results, physical aging at 30°C of PLA/o-MMT samples exhibited slower enthalpy relaxation kinetics as compared to the pristine polymer. Although all samples exhibited an equivalent thermodynamic state after being stored one week at 30°C, significant differences were observed in the mechanical performances. These changes could be attributed to the toughening mechanisms promoted by o-MMT.

Abstract: Operating Si quantum dot (QD) arrays requires homogeneous and ultra-dense structures with aggressive gate pitch. Such a density is necessary to separately control the QDs chemical potential (i.e. charge occupation of each QD) from the exchange interaction (i.e. tunnel barriers between each QD). We present here a novel Si quantum device integration that halves the effective gate pitch and provides full controllability in 1D FDSOI QD arrays. The major advantages of this architecture are explored through numerical simulations. Functionality of the fabricated structure is validated via 300K statistical electrical characterization, while tunnel-coupling control is demonstrated at cryogenic temperature.

5. Vaccination with Leishmania mexicana LPG induces PD-1 in CD8+ and PD-L2 in macrophages thereby suppressing the immune response: A model to assess vaccine efficacy

Abstract: Leishmania lipophosphoglycan is a molecule that has been used as a vaccine candidate, with contradictory results. Since unsuccessful protection could be related to suppressed T cell responses, we analyzed the expression of inhibitory receptor PD-1 in CD8+ and CD4+ lymphocytes and it is ligand PD-L2 in macrophages of BALB/c mice immunized with various doses of Leishmania mexicana LPG and re-stimulated in vitro with different concentrations of LPG. Vaccination with LPG enhanced the expression of PD-1 in CD8+ cells. Activation molecules CD137 were reduced in CD8+ cells from vaccinated mice. In vitro re-stimulation enhanced PD-L2 expression in macrophages of healthy mice in a dose-dependent fashion. The expression of PD-1, PD-L2, and CD137 is modulated according to the amount of LPG used during immunization and in vitro re-stimulation. We analyzed the expression of these molecules in mice infected with 1 x 10'4 or 1 x 10'5 L. mexicana promastigotes and re-stimulated in vitro with LPG. Infection with 1 x 10'5 parasites increased the PD-1 expression in CD8+ and diminished PD-L2 in macrophages. When these CD8+ cells were re-stimulated in vitro with LPG, simulating a second exposure to parasite antigens, PD-1 expression increased significantly more, in a dose-dependent fashion. We conclude that CD8+ T lymphocytes and macrophages express inhibition molecules according to the concentrations of Leishmania LPG and to the parasite load. Vaccination with increased amounts of LPG or infections with higher parasite numbers induces enhanced expression of PD-1 and functional inactivation of CD8+ cells, which can have critical consequences in leishmaniasis since these cells are crucial for disease control., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

6. Natural Hazards, Social Policy, and Electoral Performance: Evidence from the 2017 Earthquake in Mexico City

Abstract: Do large-scale and unexpected events, such as natural disasters, affect elections? This article studies the political dimension of the 19-S earthquake that hit Mexico City in 2017, a few months before the 2018 elections. Using fine-grained geospatial data, the results show that candidates from the city-level incumbent Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) had a small increase in vote share in 2018 compared to the previous election in precincts more exposed to damaged caused by the earthquake (in terms of both distance-based and per capita measures), accounting for the seismic profile and socioeconomic characteristics of the neighborhood. The article shows that the implementation of disaster-recovery policy explains part of this relationship. Moreover, voters were as electorally responsive to a future risk reduction strategy as to a reconstruction credit.

7. Determinants and evolution of financial inclusion in Latin America: A demand side analysis

Abstract: The benefits of financial inclusion could be particularly important in Latin America, where the levels of ownership and use of different instruments lag behind those of developed countries. An improvement in the ownership and use of formal financial instruments could result in a reduction in informality, the promotion of formal savings and productive credit, and, therefore, an inclusive economic growth. The objective of this paper is to analyze the financial inclusion of a group of Latin American countries in order to detect the most used financial instruments and the main socioeconomic determinants that explain their ownership or use. At the same time, the evolution of the main variables was also studied for the years 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2021. Micro-data from the Global Findex database was examined (except for 2021, in which only macro-data are available). Statistical models and multivariate econometrics are applied to understand the individual socioeconomic characteristics of people who are still very unlikely to own and use formal financial instruments. Finally, the main reasons for not having an account were analyzed in order to delve into the main restrictions on which the financial market must focus to achieve greater financial inclusion.

9. Biomass yield, soil cover and minerals accumulation by two green manures species grown in soils of Chiapas Mexico

Abstract: The aim of the current study was to assess the performance of Canavalia ensiformis and Mucuna deeringiana (Leguminosae) as a green manure in the agricultural soil of the Frailesca region of Chiapas, México, in terms of aboveground biomass accumulation, plant height, number of leaves, canopy coverage, and the accumulation of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Each species was sowed at two population densities under a randomized complete block design with three replications. Every 30 days after sowing (DAS), the following variables were quantified: plant length, number of leaves, canopy coverage, biomass yield, and N, P, and K content. A variance analysis and mean comparison test (Tukey 0.05) were performed for each variable. The biomass yield in M. deeringiana fluctuated from 9150 to 33,160 kg ha-1 on a fresh basis and from 4490 to 15,890 kg ha-1 on a dry basis, whereas the yield in C. ensiformis varied from 9343 to 26,390 kg ha-1 and from 4513 to 13,150 kg ha-1, respectively. The longest recorded plant length was 513.00 cm in M. deeringiana and 155 cm in C. ensiformis, with a total of 353 and 322 leaves, respectively. The accumulation of N, P, and K was 463.99 kg ha-1, 84.22 kg ha-1, and 49.26 kg ha-1 in M. deeringiana and 341.90 kg ha-1, 43.40 kg ha-1, and 36.82 kg ha-1 in C. ensiformis, respectively. Both C. ensiformis and M. deeringiana have potential as green manure for the Frailesca region of Chiapas in terms of biomass production and N accumulation.

10. PheWAS and cross-disorder analysis reveal genetic architecture, pleiotropic loci and phenotypic correlations across 11 autoimmune disorders

Abstract: IntroductionAutoimmune disorders (ADs) are a group of about 80 disorders that occur when self-attacking autoantibodies are produced due to failure in the self-tolerance mechanisms. ADs are polygenic disorders and associations with genes both in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region and outside of it have been described. Previous studies have shown that they are highly comorbid with shared genetic risk factors, while epidemiological studies revealed associations between various lifestyle and health-related phenotypes and ADs.MethodsHere, for the first time, we performed a comparative polygenic risk score (PRS) - Phenome Wide Association Study (PheWAS) for 11 different ADs (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, Celiac Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, Myasthenia Gravis, Type 1 Diabetes, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Vitiligo Late Onset, Vitiligo Early Onset) and 3,254 phenotypes available in the UK Biobank that include a wide range of socio-demographic, lifestyle and health-related outcomes. Additionally, we investigated the genetic relationships of the studied ADs, calculating their genetic correlation and conducting cross-disorder GWAS meta-analyses for the observed AD clusters.ResultsIn total, we identified 508 phenotypes significantly associated with at least one AD PRS. 272 phenotypes were significantly associated after excluding variants in the HLA region from the PRS estimation. Through genetic correlation and genetic factor analyses, we identified four genetic factors that run across studied ADs. Cross-trait meta-analyses within each factor revealed pleiotropic genome-wide significant loci.DiscussionOverall, our study confirms the association of different factors with genetic susceptibility for ADs and reveals novel observations that need to be further explored.

Abstract: Summary: Background: Low rates of postnatal retention in HIV care and viral suppression have been reported in women living with HIV (WLWH) despite viral suppression at delivery. At the same time, postpartum follow-up is of crucial importance in light of the increasing support offered in many resource-rich countries including Switzerland to WLWH choosing to breastfeed their infant, if optimal scenario criteria are met. Methods: We longitudinally investigated retention in HIV care, viral suppression, and infant follow-up in a prospective multicentre HIV cohort study of WLWH in the optimal scenario who had a live birth between January 2000 and December 2018. Risk factors for adverse outcomes in the first year postpartum were assessed using logistic and proportional hazard models. Findings: Overall, WLWH were retained in HIV care for at least six months after 94.2% of the deliveries (694/737). Late start of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) during the third trimester was found to be the main risk factor for failure of retention in HIV care (crude odds ratio [OR] 3.91; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.50–10.22; p = 0.005). Among mothers on cART until at least one year after delivery, 4.4% (26/591) experienced viral failure, with illicit drugs use being the most important risk factor (hazard ratio [HR], 13.2; 95% CI, 2.35–73.6; p = 0.003). The main risk factors for not following the recommendations regarding infant follow-up was maternal depression (OR, 3.52; 95% CI, 1.18–10.52; p = 0.024). Interpretation: Although the results are reassuring, several modifiable risk factors for adverse postpartum outcome, such as late treatment initiation and depression, were identified. These factors should be addressed in HIV care of all WLWH, especially those opting to breastfeed in resource-rich countries. 12. Oil Theft and Violence in Mexico

Abstract: Around the world, non-state armed actors have been linked to the illegal extraction of energy resources. This research note explores the case of Mexico. Anecdotal evidence suggests that criminal groups have been gaining control of energy infrastructure across the country. At the same time, oil tapping has been directly associated with criminal violence. Yet, there has not been a systematic effort to causally identify the relationship between illegal extraction and criminal violence. In this research note, we use the exogenous variation in international oil prices—as a measure of potential profits—to assess the effect of access to energy infrastructure on criminal-related violence. Our results show that increases in oil prices are associated with higher levels of homicide rates in municipalities with pipelines and in neighboring municipalities. Specifically, a standard price increase during this period is associated with approximately 20% more homicides per year in municipalities with gasoline pipelines. A locality-level analysis suggests a non-linear distance effect. Finally, we also explore criminal fragmentation as the mechanism connecting access to resources and violence. We find that access to pipelines is associated with higher presence of organized crime groups, but not necessarily with more fragmentation.

14. A United States HIV provider survey of antiretroviral therapy management in people living with HIV with co-occurring conditions.

Abstract: Introduction: Simplified HIV treatment guidelines favor integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs). However, non-infectious comorbidities and co-occurring conditions (i.e. pregnancy) often necessitate individualized antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens. This study aimed to characterize United States HIV provider strategies for ART selection when faced with concomitant health conditions. Methods: A survey of US HIV providers was conducted using hypothetical patient cases. Standardized clinical case-vignettes were developed and providers were asked to select their preferred regimen. Eleven cases focused on cardiometabolic syndrome, renal dysfunction, weight gain, and pregnancy. Results: 119 providers responded across all cases (with a median 57 responses [interquartile range 55.5–72] per case), and were primarily Infectious Diseases physicians in academic settings from across the continental United States. Bictegravir/tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine was most commonly prescribed for three case-scenarios of cardiometabolic disease (62.3%). Diverse regimens were recommended for a case involving weight gain, with 98.5% switching from dolutegravir plus tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine, most commonly to doravirine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/lamivudine. Dolutegravir-based regimens were selected in case-scenarios of pregnancy (77.3%), with some use of bictegravir/tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine (13.6%). For two case-scenarios renal disease with worsening creatinine clearance to < 30 mL/minute, many providers used lamivudine or emtricitabine in fixed-dose combination (43.3%). Conclusion: This study reveals varied ART approaches for people living with HIV and non-infectious conditions, often diverging from standard regimens. While guidelines provide a framework, providers adapt treatment based on patient needs. Further research is crucial to optimize ART management in these complex situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Objective: Overweight and obesity are endemic in developed countries, with a substantial negative impact on human health. Medications developed to treat obesity include agonists for the G-protein coupled receptors glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1R; e.g. liraglutide), serotonin 2C (5-HT2CR; e.g, lorcaserin), and melanocortin4 (MC4R) which reduce body weight primarily by suppressing food intake. However, the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic food intake suppressive effects are still being defined and were investigated here. Methods: We profiled PPG neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract (PPGNTS) using single nucleus RNA sequencing (Nuc-Seq) and histochemistry. We next examined the requirement of PPGNTS neurons for obesity medication effects on food intake by virally ablating PPGNTS neurons. Finally, we assessed the effects on food intake of the combination of liraglutide and lorcaserin. Results: We found that 5-HT2CRs, but not GLP-1Rs or MC4Rs, were widespread in PPGNTS clusters and that lorcaserin significantly activated PPGNTS neurons. Accordingly, ablation of PPGNTS neurons prevented the reduction of food intake by lorcaserin but not MC4R agonist melanotan-II, demonstrating the functional significance of PPGNTS 5-HT2CR expression. Finally, the combination of lorcaserin with GLP-1R agonists liraglutide or exendin-4 produced greater food intake reduction as compared to either monotherapy. Conclusions: These findings identify a necessary mechanism through which obesity medication lorcaserin produces its therapeutic benefit, namely brainstem PPGNTS neurons. Moreover, these data reveal a strategy to augment the therapeutic profile of the current frontline treatment for obesity, GLP-1R agonists, via coadministration with 5-HT2CR agonists.

Abstract: Cholesterol is the precursor of all steroid hormones, and the entry of cholesterol into the mitochondria is the rate-limiting step of steroidogenesis. Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC1) is an outer mitochondrial protein part of a multiprotein complex that imports cholesterol. We previously reported that intratesticular administration of a 25 amino acid peptide blocking the interaction between 14-3-3ϵ with VDAC1 increased circulating levels of testosterone. This fusion peptide was composed of a HIV-1 transactivator of transcription (TAT) protein transduction domain cell-penetrating peptide, a glycine linker, and amino acids 159-172 of VDAC1 (TV159-172). Here, we describe the development of a family of small molecules that increase circulating testosterone levels after an oral administration. We first characterized an animal model where TV159-172 was delivered subcutaneously. This subcutaneous model allowed us to study the interactions between TV159-172 and the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG) and identify the biologically active core of TV159-172. The core consisted of the tetrapeptide RVTQ, which we used as a platform to design synthetic peptide derivatives that can be administered orally. We developed a second animal model to test various derivatives of RVTQ and found 11 active compounds. Dose-response experiments identified 4 synthetic peptides that robustly increased androgen levels in a specific manner. We selected RdVTQ as the leading VDAC1-core derivative and profiled the response across the lifespan of Brown-Norway rats. In summary, we present the development of a new class of therapeutics that act within the HPG axis to increase testosterone levels specifically. This new class of small molecules self-regulates, preventing abuse.

Abstract: Abstract Urban Solid Waste Management (USWM) is one of the components that influences in the sustainable cities. It is a fundamental factor in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 2030 agenda. This paper work aims to validate a mathematical model for solid waste generation and to estimate the economic loss due lack of recycling in the city of Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul/Brazil. The model adopted was developed by Dias et. al. (2012), which allows projecting the mass of waste to be generated by the inhabitants from socioeconomic indicators, such as per capita income, social classes and size of population in a specific urban territory. Besides, waste composition was analyzed to determinate the value and share of the gravimetric characterization, in order to estimate the economic loss in areas, which there are no selective collection of Household Solid Waste (HSW). The model showed strong adherence, when compared to the real mass of HSW collected. The economic loss due to selective collection approaches nearly 9.6 million US$, or about 11 US$ per person per year. The study can provide support for economic evaluation of project sand public policies related to USWM executed in any other city with similar characteristics.

Abstract: Abstract Background In Nicaragua, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women. Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, primarily using self-sampling, was introduced between 2014 and 2018 in three provinces. We analyzed data from the HPV screening program with the goal of describing key characteristics including reach, HPV prevalence, triage and treatment, and factors associated with follow-up completion. Methods We analyzed individual-level data from routinely collected forms for women attending HPV-based cervical cancer screening. HPV-positive women were triaged with Pap or visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) prior to treatment. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with receiving triage and treatment; analyses were adjusted for province, age, and self- vs. provider-collected sampling. Results Forty-four thousand six hundred thirty-five women were screened with HPV testing; 96.6% of women used self-sampling. Six thousand seven hundred seventy-six women were HPV positive (15.2%), 54.0% of screen-positive women received triage, and 53.1% of triage-positive women were treated, primarily with cryotherapy. If women lost at triage are included, the overall treatment percentage was 27.8%. Province and provider sampling were significantly associated with completing triage. Province and triage type were significantly associated with receiving treatment. Abstract: Background: Mortality among people with HIV declined with the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy. We investigated trends over time in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in people with HIV from 1999-2020. Methods: Data were collected from the D:A:D cohort from 1999 through January 2015 and RESPOND from October 2017 through 2020. Age-standardized all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates, classified using Coding Causes of Death in HIV (CoDe), were calculated. Poisson regression models were used to assess mortality trends over time. Results: Among 55716 participants followed for a median of 6 years (IQR 3-11), 5263 participants died (crude mortality rate [MR] 13.7/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 13.4-14.1). Changing patterns of mortality were observed with AIDS as the most common cause of death between 1999- 2009 (n = 952, MR 4.2/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 4.0-4.5) and non-AIDS defining malignancy (NADM) from 2010 -2020 (n = 444, MR 2.8/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 2.5-3.1). In multivariable analysis, all-cause mortality declined over time (adjusted mortality rate ratio [aMRR] 0.97 per year; 95%CI 0.96, 0.98), mostly from 1999 through 2010 (aMRR 0.96 per year; 95%CI 0.95-0.97), and with no decline shown from 2011 through 2020 (aMRR 1·00 per year; 95%CI 0·96-1·05). Mortality due all known causes except NADM also declined over the entire follow-up period. Conclusion: Mortality among people with HIV in the D:A:D and/or RESPOND cohorts decreased between 1999 and 2009 and was stable over the period from 2010 through 2020. The decline in mortality rates was not fully explained by improvements in immunologic-virologic status or other risk factors.

22. Numerical investigation of spallation neutrons generated from petawatt-scale laser-driven proton beams

Abstract: Laser-driven neutron sources could offer a promising alternative to those based on conventional accelerator technologies in delivering compact beams of high brightness and short duration. We examine this through particle-in-cell and Monte Carlo simulations that model, respectively, the laser acceleration of protons from thin-foil targets and their subsequent conversion into neutrons in secondary lead targets. Laser parameters relevant to the 0.5 PW LMJ-PETAL and 0.6–6 PW Apollon systems are considered. Owing to its high intensity, the 20-fs-duration 0.6 PW Apollon laser is expected to accelerate protons up to above 100 MeV, thereby unlocking efficient neutron generation via spallation reactions. As a result, despite a 30-fold lower pulse energy than the LMJ-PETAL laser, the 0.6 PW Apollon laser should perform comparably well both in terms of neutron yield and flux. Notably, we predict that very compact neutron pulses, of ∼10 ps duration and ∼100 μm spot size, can be released provided the lead convertor target is thin enough (∼100 μm). These sources are characterized by extreme fluxes, of the order of 1023 n cm−2 s−1, and even ten times higher when using the 6 PW Apollon laser. Such values surpass those currently achievable at large-scale accelerator-based neutron sources (∼1016 n cm−2 s−1), or reported from previous laser experiments using low-Z converters (∼1018 n cm−2 s−1). By showing that such laser systems can produce neutron pulses significantly brighter than existing sources, our findings open a path toward attractive novel applications, such as flash neutron radiography and laboratory studies of heavy-ion nucleosynthesis.

25. UnB-AV: An Audio-Visual Database for Multimedia Quality Research

Abstract: In this paper we present the UnB-AV database, which is a database of audio-visual sequences and quality scores aimed at multimedia quality research. The database contains a total of 140 source content, with a diverse semantic content, both in terms of the video and audio components. It also contains 2,320 test sequences with audio and video degradations, along with the corresponding quality and content subjective scores. The subjective scores were collected by performing 3 different psycho-physical experiments using the Immersive Methodology. The three experiments have been presented individually in previous studies. In the first experiment, only the video component of the audio-visual sequences were degraded with compression (H.264 and H.265) and transmission (packet-loss and frame freezing) distortions. In the second experiment, only the audio component of the audio-visual sequences were degraded with common audio distortions (clip, echo, chop, and background noise). Finally, in the third experiment the audio and video degradations were combined to degrade both audio and video components. The UnB-AV database is available for download from the site of the Laboratory of Digital Signal Processing of the University of Brasilia and The Consumer Digital Video Library (CDVL).

Abstract: El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar las decisiones de financiamiento de dos subsectores específicos del segmento de tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC): el de desarrollo de videojuegos (VG) y el de software y servicios informáticos (SSI). Los datos utilizados incluyen 80 empresas argentinas relevadas durante el 2017. Los resultados muestran que la fuente principal de financiamiento en las diferentes etapas del ciclo de negocio son los fondos propios para todas las empresas de la muestra. Sin embargo, la participación de dichos fondos se reduce a medida que las empresas transitan las etapas de start up y de crecimiento. Además, se encuentra que la tipología de las fuentes externas con las que sustituyen el financiamiento propio difiere de acuerdo con el subsector analizado. En la etapa de start up, las empresas de SSI sustituyen fondos propios por subsidios públicos, a diferencia de las empresas de VG que utilizan el financiamiento de prestamistas privados. En la etapa de crecimiento, las empresas de SSI utilizan en mayor proporción financiamiento bancario, y las empresas de VG, subsidios públicos.

Abstract: Abstract Background Migrant mothers in high-income countries often encounter more complications during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. To enlighten health care providers concerning potential barriers, the objective of this study was to explore positive and negative experiences with maternal health services in the University Hospitals of Geneva and Zurich and to describe barriers to maternity services from a qualitative perspective. Methods In this qualitative study, six focus groups (FGs) were conducted involving 33 women aged 21 to 40 years. All FG discussions were audio-recorded and later transcribed. Data were analysed using a thematic analysis approach assisted by the Atlas.ti qualitative data management software. Results Positive experiences included not only the availability of maternity services, especially during emergency situations and the postpartum period, but also the availability of specific maternity services for undocumented migrants in Geneva. Negative experiences were classified into either personal or structural barriers. On the personal level, the main barriers were a lack of social support and a lack of health literacy, whereas the main themes on the structural level were language barriers and a lack of information. Conclusion Structural adaptation is necessary to meet the needs of the extremely diverse population. The needs include (1) the provision of specific information for migrant women in multiple languages, (2) the availability of trained interpreters who are easily accessible to health care providers, (3) specifically trained nurses or social assistance providers to guide migrants through the health system, and (4) a cultural competence-training programme for health care providers.

30. Breastfeeding increases microbial community resilience

Abstract: Objective: Since the present group had already described the composition of the intestinal microbiota of Brazilian infants under low social economic level, the aim of the present study was to analyze the microbial community structure changes in this group of infants during their early life due to external factors. Methods: Fecal samples were collected from 11 infants monthly during the first year of life. The infants were followed regarding clinical and diet information and characterized according to breastfeeding practices. DNA was extracted from fecal samples of each child and subjected to Polymerase Chain Reaction - Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis analysis. Results: The results revealed a pattern of similarity between the time points for those who were on exclusive breastfeeding or predominant breastfeeding. Although there were changes in intensity and fluctuation of some bands, the Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis patterns in the one‐year microbial analysis were stable for breastfeeding children. There was uninterrupted ecological succession despite the influence of external factors, such as complementary feeding and antibiotic administration, suggesting microbiota resilience. This was not observed for those children who had mixed feeding and introduction of solid food before the 5th month of life. Conclusion: These results suggested an intestinal microbiota pattern resilient to external forces, due to the probiotic and prebiotic effects of exclusive breastfeeding, reinforcing the importance of exclusive breastfeeding until the 6th month of life. Resumo: Objetivo: Como nosso grupo já havia descrito a composição da microbiota intestinal de neonatos brasileiros em baixo nível socioeconômico, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar alterações estruturais da comunidade microbiana desse grupo de neonatos no início de sua vida devido a fatores externos. Métodos: Amostras fecais foram coletadas mensalmente de 11 neonatos durante o primeiro ano de vida. Os neonatos foram acompanhados com relação a informações clínicas e nutricionais e caracterizados de acordo com práticas de amamentação. O DNA foi extraído das amostras fecais de cada criança e submetido a análise através da técnica de Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase – Eletroforese em Gel de Gradiente Desnaturante. Resultados: Os resultados revelaram um padrão de similaridade entre seus próprios pontos temporais em indivíduos em aleitamento materno exclusivo ou predominante. Apesar de variações na intensidade e flutuação de algumas bandas, o padrão Eletroforese em Gel de Gradiente Desnaturante na análise microbiana de um ano foi estável em crianças em aleitamento materno. Houve sucessão ecológica ininterrupta apesar da influência de fatores externos, como alimentação complementar e administração de antibióticos, sugeriu resiliência da microbiota. Isso não foi observado nas crianças com alimentação heterogênea e introdução de alimentos sólidos antes do quinto mês de vida. Conclusão: Nossos resultados sugerem um padrão de microbiota intestinal resiliente a forças externas, devido a efeitos probióticos e prebióticos do aleitamento materno exclusivo, reforçam a importância do aleitamento materno exclusivo até o sexto mês de vida. Abstract: El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el efecto del grado de intensidad tecnológica asociado a las Pymes en el acceso al financiamiento. Por lo tanto, se estima un modelo Logit ordenado considerando un conjunto de variables independientes como el tamaño de la empresa, la antigüedad, la capacidad exportadora y la intensidad tecnológica asociada al sector. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la intensidad tecnológica de la empresa resulta ser la variable que más impacta en la probabilidad de financiarse en el sector bancario. Esta conclusión es relevante para Argentina, dado que, a diferencia de otros países emergentes, las empresas no cuentan con instrumentos alternativos al financiamiento bancario que se adapten a las características propias de las Pymes de alta tecnología.

39. Comparison of OpenFOAM and EllipSys3D for neutral atmospheric flow over complex terrain

Abstract: The flow solvers OpenFOAM and EllipSys3D are compared in the case of neutral atmospheric flow over terrain using the test cases of Askervein and Bolund hills. Both solvers are run using the steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes k–ϵ turbulence model. One of the main modeling differences between the two solvers is the wall-function approach. The OpenFOAM v.1.7.1 uses a Nikuradse's sand roughness model, while EllipSys3D uses a model based on the atmospheric roughness length. It is found that Nikuradse's model introduces an error dependent on the near-wall cell height. To mitigate this error the near-wall cells should be at least 10 times larger than the surface roughness. It is nonetheless possible to obtain very similar results between EllipSys3D and OpenFOAM v.1.7.1. The more recent OpenFOAM v.2.2.1, which includes the atmospheric roughness length wall-function approach, has also been tested and compared to the results of OpenFOAM v.1.7.1 and EllipSys3D. The numerical results obtained using the same wall-modeling approach in both EllipSys3D and OpenFOAM v.2.1.1 proved to be almost identical. Two meshing strategies are investigated using HypGrid and SnappyHexMesh. The performance of OpenFOAM on SnappyHexMesh-based low-aspect-ratio unstructured meshes is found to be almost an order of magnitude faster than on HypGrid-based structured and high-aspect-ratio meshes. However, proper control of boundary layer resolution is found to be very difficult when the SnappyHexMesh tool is utilized for grid generation purposes. The OpenFOAM is generally found to be 2–6 times slower than EllipSys3D in achieving numerical results of the same order of accuracy on similar or identical computational meshes, when utilization of EllipSys3D default grid sequencing procedures is included.

Abstract: To determine pertussis and influenza vaccination coverage during pregnancy among women delivering in all the maternities of Geneva (Switzerland), during the COVID-19 pandemic.All women delivering in all the maternity centres of the canton of Geneva from 1st November 2020 to 30th November 2020 (beginning of the flu vaccination season) and from 8th March 2021 to 7th April 2021 (end of the flu vaccination season) had their records checked upon admission to the labour ward regarding pertussis and influenza vaccination during pregnancy. Reasons for non-vaccination were recorded. Univariate and multivariate analyses were done to identify predictors of vaccine uptake.951 women delivered in Geneva during the two study periods, of which 950 were included in the study. 86.2% were vaccinated against pertussis, with no significant difference between the study periods (87.5% vs 85% at the beginning and end of the flu vaccination season respectively). 49.8% were vaccinated against influenza, with no significant difference between the study periods (48.8% vs 50.7% beginning and end of the flu vaccination season respectively). The influenza vaccine was 5 times more likely not to be proposed (8.9% vs. 1.7%) and 3 times more likely to be refused (26.6% vs. 8%) than the pertussis vaccine. Main reason for refusal was a lack of maternal desire for both vaccines, but not vaccine fear. Maternal parity ≥ 1 was significantly associated with pertussis vaccine uptake at univariate analysis. Women were significantly more likely to accept the influenza vaccine if they had a university degree or if they did not deliver in a midwife-only run delivery unit in both univariate and multivariate analysis.In Geneva, most gynaecologists offer pertussis immunization during antenatal care and uptake is high, but more efforts must be done to increase influenza vaccination coverage. Education level impacts maternal flu vaccination uptake, but other social disparities did not.

41. Adherence to cardiac rehabilitation: prevalence, barriers, predictors and potential solutions

Background Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a key component in the continuum of care for patients with CVD that reduces mortality, morbidity and rehospitalization. Clinical practice guidelines strongly recommend and encourage CR participation for eligible patients with CVD. Although there are multiple studies on barriers and solutions to improve the initiation rates of CR, a limited number of studies have explored the barriers and solutions to increase the degree of adherence to CR. Purpose The aim of this study was to define those characteristics that predict adherence to CR with special focus on women and employed patients, since these groups are generally understudied. Methods We performed a retrospective electronic medical record review of the Mayo Clinic CR program, Rochester to identify patients who had started the Mayo Clinic program between January 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015. Among patients who met the inclusion criteria, we conducted a telephone survey with the aim of defining barriers to participation and possible solutions proposed by patients to increase CR adherence. The survey included factors previously identified in the literature as possible barriers, as well as other hypothetical factors; including closed and open-ended questions. The study was approved by the Mayo Clinic institutional review board. Results 376 patients met the inclusion criteria. 257 patients completed the survey. 240 (63.8%) returned the HIPAA (Health Information Use Authorization) document. 72 (30%) were women with a mean age of 66.4 ±12.4 years. Forty-seven percent (n = 113) of the participants did not complete the recommended course of 36 sessions of CR. Among the most important barriers, we found that schedule conflicts were more frequently noted to be a barrier to CR participation among employed patients compared to non-employed patients (p=0.04). Lack of motivation and an inadequate awareness of the importance of completing CR were significantly reported as barriers from employed and non-employed patients. Among the proposed solutions, the participants suggested the potential benefit of alternative delivery models for CR programs; as well efforts to improve awareness of the importance of CR adherence among patients and professionals. Conclusions This study has great relevance because it addressed barriers and potential solutions to CR adherence. Barriers such as mental stress and motivation, as well as a lack of knowledge about CR benefits highlight the role of patient counseling and education as keys to help improve CR adherence. Alternative CR delivery models are attractive options to help facilitate participation, with special focus on the employed population and women, as they more frequently report logistical barriers to CR compared to non-employed patients and men. Further research and advocacy work are needed to help identify and implement strategies that address barriers to CR adherence and completion.

42. A brainstem to hypothalamic arcuate nucleus GABAergic circuit drives feeding

Abstract: The obesity epidemic is principally driven by the consumption of more calories than the body requires. It is therefore essential that the mechanisms underpinning feeding behavior are defined. The brainstem nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) receives direct information from the digestive system and projects to second order regions including the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC). Here we reveal that selective activation of NTS γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABANTS) neurons is sufficient to significantly control food intake and body weight. Optogenetic interrogation of GABANTScircuitry identified GABANTS→ARC projections as appetite suppressive without creating aversion. Electrophysiological analysis revealed GABANTS→ARC stimulation inhibits hunger promoting agouti-related protein/neuropeptide Y (AgRP/NPY) neurons via GABA release. Adopting an intersectional genetics strategy, we clarify that the GABANTS→ARC circuit induces satiety. Abstract: CD161 is a C-type lectin-like receptor expressed on the majority of natural killer (NK) cells; however, the significance of CD161 expression on NK cells has not been comprehensively investigated. Recently, we found that CD161 expression identifies a transcriptional and innate functional phenotype that is shared across various T cell populations. Using mass cytometry and microarray experiments, we demonstrate that this functional phenotype extends to NK cells. CD161 marks NK cells that have retained the ability to respond to innate cytokines during their differentiation, and is lost upon cytomegalovirus-induced maturation in both healthy and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. These pro-inflammatory NK cells are present in the inflamed lamina propria where they are enriched for integrin CD103 expression. Thus, CD161 expression identifies NK cells that may contribute to inflammatory disease pathogenesis and correlates with an innate responsiveness to cytokines in both T and NK cells.

47. The Extension Services and the Level of Productivity of Sugarcane Farmers in the Visayas, Philippines

Abstract: Agricultural extension has been an essential strength in agricultural development and social innovation factor. The word “extension” in the modern meaning was first used which refers to informal public education in England in the second half of the 19th century (Demiryurek, 2014). This descriptive method of research aid at determining the effectivity of extension services and the productivity of sugarcane farmers in the Visayas, Philippines. The 400 sugarcane farmers randomly identified at the 10 locations in the Visayas area of the Philippines. An instrument used was the agency Extension Program Guidelines that measures productivity of the farmers, farm profile and extent of services, among others. The result shows that the level of productivity of sugarcane farms in the Visayas area was high and a significant difference indicates on the level of productivity of sugarcane farms when grouped as to location. The level of productivity of sugarcane farming in the Visayas in terms of indicators such as size of farm, type of soil, land topography, average rainfall received, distance of the farm to the sugar mill, farming innovations, workers’ availability and expenses per hectare was at low productivity. Significant difference in the productivity of sugarcane farming at the different locations in the Visayas area in terms of size of farm, land topography, distance of the farm to the sugar mill, farming innovations, workers’ availability, and expenses per hectare except for the type of soil and average rainfall. The extent of services does not significantly related to the productivity. Relatively, there is no significant relationship existed between the extent of services and farm profile. Farm profile does not influence the level of productivity, too.
