Abstract

This paper introduces an innovative dataset specifically crafted for challenging agricultural settings (a greenhouse), where achieving precise localization is of paramount importance. The dataset was gathered using a mobile platform equipped with a set of sensors typically used in mobile robots, as it was moved through all the corridors of a typical Mediterranean greenhouse featuring tomato crop. This dataset presents a unique opportunity for constructing detailed 3D models of plants in such indoor-like space, with potential applications such as robotized spraying. For the first time to the best knowledge of authors, a dataset suitable to put at test Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) methods is presented in a greenhouse environment, which poses unique challenges. The suitability of the dataset for such goal is assessed by presenting SLAM results with state-of-the-art algorithms. 2. A VM-Agnostic and Backwards Compatible Protected Modifier for Dynamically-Typed Languages

Abstract

In object-oriented languages, method visibility modifiers hold a key role in separating internal methods from the public API. Protected visibility modifiers offer a way to hide methods from external objects while authorizing internal use and overriding in subclasses. While present in main statically-typed languages, visibility modifiers are not as common or mature in dynamically-typed languages. In this article, we present ProtDyn, a self-send-based visibility model calculated at compile time for dynamically-typed languages relying on name-mangling and syntactic differentiation of self vs non self sends. We present #Pharo, a ProtDyn implementation of this model that is backwards compatible with existing programs, and its port to Python. Using these implementations we study the performance impact of ProtDyn on the method lookup, in the presence of global lookup caches and polymorphic inline caches. We show that our name mangling and double method registration technique has a very low impact on performance and keeps the benefits from the global lookup cache and polymorphic inline cache. We also show that the memory overhead on a real use case is between 2% and 13% in the worst-case scenario. Protected modifier semantics enforces encapsulation such as private but allow developers to still extend the class in subclasses. ProtDyn offers a VM-agnostic and backwards-compatible design to introduce protected semantics in dynamically-typed languages.

Abstract

Development of applications related to closed-loop control requires either testing on the field or on a realistic simulator, with the latter being more convenient, inexpensive, safe, and leading to shorter development cycles. To address that need, the present work introduces MVSim, a simulator for multiple vehicles or robots capable of running dozens of agents in simple scenarios, or a handful of them in complex scenarios. MVSim employs realistic physics-grounded friction models for tire-ground interaction, and aims at accurate and GPU-accelerated simulation of most common modern sensors employed in mobile robotics and autonomous vehicle research, such as depth and RGB cameras, or 2D and 3D LiDAR scanners. All depth-related sensors are able to accurately measure distances to 3D models provided by the user to define custom world elements. Efficient simulation is achieved by means of focusing on ground vehicles, which allows the use of a simplified 2D physics engine for body collisions while solving wheel-ground interaction forces separately. The core parts of the system are written in C++ for maximum efficiency, while Python, ROS 1, and ROS 2 wrappers are also offered for easy integration into user systems. A custom publish/subscribe protocol based on ZeroMQ (ZMQ) is defined to allow for multiprocess applications to access or modify a running simulation. Abstract

Macrophages are essential to muscle regeneration, as they regulate inflammation, carry out phagocytosis, and facilitate tissue repair. These cells exhibit phenotypic switching from pro-inflammatory (M1) to anti-inflammatory (M2) states during muscle repair, influencing myoblast proliferation, differentiation, and myofiber formation. In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), asynchronous muscle injuries disrupt the normal temporal stages of regeneration, leading to fibrosis and failed regeneration. Altered macrophage activity is associated with DMD progression and physiopathology. Gaining insight into the intricate relationship between macrophages and muscle cells is crucial for creating effective therapies aimed at treating this muscle disorder. This review explores the dynamic functions of macrophages in muscle regeneration and their implications in DMD.

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the degrees of dependence and presence of bacterial plaque in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the quality of life of children and their caregivers. Method and materials: This was a cross-sectional observational study. This study included 119 individuals with ASD and their caregivers. Data were collected through a sociodemographic questionnaire, WHOQOL-Bref, and Burden interview to measure quality of life and caregiver burden, respectively. The Autoquestionnaire Qualité de Vie Enfant Imagé questionnaire, adapted in game format, was applied to verify quality of life in children with ASD. An oral clinical examination evaluated the visible plaque index. The collected data were tabulated and organized for statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%. Results: It was observed that 52% of the children had a severity of ASD level 1; 70% were dependent for general activities, and 65% were dependent for oral hygiene. Of the 77 children who thoroughly answered the questionnaire about their quality of life, 64.9% had good quality of life, and 35.1% had scores below 48, that is, low quality of life. In general, the caregivers generally presented quality of life with a rate of 60.95 (good) points on the scale. It was observed that gingival bleeding greater than 30% is two (ASD 2 + ASD 3) to three (ASD 3) times more likely to occur in patients who have higher levels of ASD (P < .004). Conclusion: It was concluded that the quality of life of individuals with ASD was good, that most children are dependent for their daily activities and oral hygiene, and that they showed reasonable plaque control. In several domains it is crucial to store and manipulate data whose origin needs to be completely traceable to guarantee the consistency, trustworthiness and reliability on the data itself typically for ethical and legal reasons. It is also important to guarantee that such properties are also carried further when such data is composed and processed into new data. In this article we present the main requirements and theorethical problems that arise by the design of a system supporting data with such capabilities. We present an architecture for implementing a system as well as a prototype developed in Pharo.

15. Exploring the Relationship between MicroRNAs, Intratumoral Microbiota, and Breast Cancer Progression in Patients with and without Metastasis

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) continues to pose a significant burden on global cancer-related morbidity and mortality, primarily driven by metastasis. However, the combined influence of microRNAs (miRNAs) and intratumoral microbiota on BC metastasis remains largely unexplored. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the interplay between intratumoral microbiota composition, miRNA expression profiles, and their collective influence on metastasis development in BC patients by employing 16S rRNA sequencing and qPCR methodologies. Our findings revealed an increase in the expression of miR-149-5p, miR-20b-5p, and miR-342-5p in metastatic breast cancer (Met-BC) patients. The Met-BC patients exhibited heightened microbial richness and diversity, primarily attributed to diverse pathogenic bacteria. Taxonomic analysis identified several pathogenic and pro-inflammatory species enriched in Met-BC, contrasting with non-metastatic breast cancer (NonMet-BC) patients, which displayed an enrichment in potential probiotic and anti-inflammatory species. Notably, we identified and verified a baseline prognostic signature for metastasis in BC patients, with its clinical relevance further validated by its impact on overall survival. In conclusion, the observed disparities in miRNA expression and species-level bacterial abundance suggest their involvement in BC progression. The development of a prognostic signature holds promise for metastasis risk assessment, paving the way for personalized interventions and improved clinical outcomes in BC patients.

Abstract

Abstract Background Ips typographus (European spruce bark beetle) is the most destructive pest of spruce forests in Europe. As for other animals, it has been proposed that the microbiome plays important roles in the biology of bark beetles. About the bacteriome, there still are many uncertainties regarding the taxonomical composition, insect-bacteriome interactions, and their potential roles in the beetle ecology. Here, we aim to deep into the ecological functions and taxonomical composition of I. typographus associated bacteria. Results We assessed the metabolic potential of a collection of isolates obtained from different life stages of I. typographus beetles. All strains showed the capacity to hydrolyse one or more complex polysaccharides into simpler molecules, which may provide an additional carbon source to its host. Also, 83.9% of the strains isolated showed antagonistic effect against one or more entomopathogenic fungi, which could assist the beetle in its fight against this pathogenic threat. Using culture-dependent and -independent techniques, we present a taxonomical analysis of the bacteriome associated with the I. typographus beetle during its different life stages. We have observed an evolution of its bacteriome, which is diverse at the larval phase, substantially diminished in pupae, greater in the teneral adult phase, and similar to that of the larval stage in mature adults. Our results suggest that taxa belonging to the Erwiniaceae family, and the Pseudoxanthomonas and Pseudomonas genera, as well as an undescribed genus within the Enterobactereaceae family, are part of the core microbiome and may perform vital roles in maintaining beetle fitness. Conclusion Our results indicate that isolates within the bacteriome of I. typographus beetle have the metabolic potential to increase beetle fitness by proving additional and assimilable carbon sources for the beetle, and by antagonizing fungi entomopathogens. Furthermore, we observed that isolates from adult beetles are more likely to have these capacities but those obtained from larvae showed strongest antifungal activity. Our taxonomical analysis showed that Erwinia typographi, Pseudomonas bohemica, and Pseudomonas typographi species along with Pseudoxanthomonas genus, and putative new taxa belonging to the Erwiniaceae and Enterobacterales group are repeatedly present within the bacteriome of I. typographus beetles, indicating that these species might be part of the core microbiome. In addition to Pseudomonas and Erwinia group, Staphylococcus, Acinetobacter, Curtobacterium, Streptomyces, and Bacillus genera seem to also have interesting metabolic capacities but are present in a lower frequency. Future studies involving bacterial-insect interactions or analysing other potential roles would provide more insights into the bacteriome capacity to be beneficial to the beetle.

Abstract

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating degenerative disease of skeletal muscles caused by loss of dystrophin, a key protein that maintains muscle integrity, which leads to progressive muscle degeneration aggravated by chronic inflammation, muscle stem cells’ (MuSCs) reduced regenerative capacity and replacement of muscle with fibroadipose tissue. Previous research has shown that pharmacological GSK-3β inhibition favors myogenic differentiation and plays an important role in modulating inflammatory processes. Isolecanoric acid (ILA) is a natural product isolated from a fungal culture displaying GSK-3β inhibitory properties. The present study aimed to investigate the proregenerative and anti-inflammatory properties of this natural compound in the DMD context. Our results showed that ILA markedly promotes myogenic differentiation of myoblasts by increasing β-Catenin signaling and boosting the myogenic potential of mouse and human stem cells. One important finding was that the GSK-3β/β-Catenin pathway is altered in dystrophic mice muscle and ILA enhances the myofiber formation of dystrophic MuSCs. Treatment with this natural compound improves muscle regeneration of dystrophic mice by, in turn, improving functional performance. Moreover, ILA ameliorates the inflammatory response in both muscle explants and the macrophages isolated from dystrophic mice to, thus, mitigate fibrosis after muscle damage. Overall, we show that ILA modulates both inflammation and muscle regeneration to, thus, contribute to improve the dystrophic phenotype.

22. Sub-method, partial behavioral reflection with Reflectivity: Looking back on 10 years of use

Abstract

Context. Refining or altering existing behavior is the daily work of every developer, but that cannot be always anticipated, and software sometimes cannot be stopped. In such cases, unanticipated adaptation of running systems is of interest for many scenarios, ranging from functional upgrades to on-the-fly debugging or monitoring of critical applications. Inquiry. A way of altering software at run time is using behavioral reflection, which is particularly well-suited for unanticipated adaptation of real-world systems. Partial behavioral reflection is not a new idea, and for years many efforts have been made to propose a practical way of expressing it. All these efforts resulted in practical solutions, but which introduced a semantic gap between the code that requires adaptation and the expression of the partial behavior. For example, in Aspect-Oriented Programming, a pointcut description is expressed in another language, which introduces a new distance between the behavior expression (the Advice) and the source code in itself. Approach. Ten years ago, the idea of closing the gap between the code and the expression of the partial behavior led to the implementation of the Reflectivity framework. Using Reflectivity, developers annotate Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) nodes with meta-behavior which is taken into account by the compiler to produce behavioral variations. In this paper, we present Reflectivity, its API, its implementation and its usage in Pharo. We reflect on ten years of use of Reflectivity, and show how it has been used as a basic building block of many innovative ideas. Knowledge. Reflectivity brings a practical way of working at the AST level, which is a high-level representation of the source code manipulated by software developers. It enables a powerful way of dynamically add and modify behavior. Reflectivity is also a flexible mean to bridge the gap between the expression of the meta-behavior and the source code. This ability to apply unanticipated adaptation and to provide behavioral reflection led to many experiments and projects during this last decade by external users. Existing work use Reflectivity to implement reflective libraries or languages extensions, featherweight code instrumentation, dynamic software update, debugging tools and visualization and software analysis tools. Grounding. Reflectivity is actively used in research projects. During the past ten years, it served as a support, either for implementation or as a fundamental base, for many research work including PhD theses, conference, journal and workshop papers. Reflectivity is now an important library of the Pharo language, and is integrated at the heart of the platform. Importance. Reflectivity exposes powerful abstractions to deal with partial behavioral adaptation, while providing a mature framework for unanticipated, non-intrusive and partial behavioral reflection based on AST annotation. Furthermore, even if Reflectivity found its home inside Pharo, it is not a pure Smalltalk-oriented solution. As validation over the practical use of Reflectivity in dynamic object-oriented languages, the API has been ported to Python. Finally, the AST annotation feature of Reflectivity opens new experimentation opportunities about the control that developers could gain on the behavior of their own software.

Abstract

Transcriptional regulation constitutes a key step in gene expression regulation. Myocyte enhancer factor 2C (MEF2C) is a transcription factor of the MADS box family involved in the early development of several cell types, including muscle cells. Over the last decade, a novel layer of complexity modulating gene regulation has emerged as non-coding RNAs have been identified, impacting both transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation. microRNAs represent the most studied and abundantly expressed subtype of small non-coding RNAs, and their functional roles have been widely documented. On the other hand, our knowledge of the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms that drive microRNA expression is still incipient. We recently demonstrated that MEF2C is able to transactivate the long, but not short, regulatory element upstream of the miR-23a-miR-27a-miR-24-2 transcriptional start site. However, MEF2C over-expression and silencing, respectively, displayed distinct effects on each of the miR-23a-miR-27a-miR-24-2 mature cluster members without affecting pri-miRNA expression levels, thus supporting additional MEF2C-driven regulatory mechanisms. Within this study, we demonstrated a complex post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism directed by MEF2C in the regulation of miR-23a-miR-27a-miR-24-2 cluster members, distinctly involving different domains of the MEF2C transcription factor and the physical interaction with pre-miRNAs and Ksrp, HnRNPa3 and Ddx17 transcripts.

Abstract

Debugging is one of the most important and time consuming activities in software maintenance, yet mainstream debuggers are not well-adapted to several debugging scenarios. This has led to the research of new techniques covering specific families of complex bugs. Notably, recent research proposes to empower developers with scripting DSLs, plugin-based and moldable debuggers. However, these solutions are tailored to specific use-cases, or too costly for one-time-use scenarios. In this paper we argue that exposing a debugging scripting interface in mainstream debuggers helps in solving many challenging debugging scenarios. For this purpose, we present Sindarin, a scripting API that eases the expression and automation of different strategies developers pursue during their debugging sessions. Sindarin provides a GDB-like API, augmented with AST-bytecode-source code mappings and object-centric capabilities. To demonstrate the versatility of Sindarin, we reproduce several advanced breakpoints and non-trivial debugging mechanisms from the literature.

Abstract

Satellite cells (SCs), muscle stem cells, display functional heterogeneity, and dramatic changes linked to their regenerative capabilities are associated with muscle-wasting diseases. SC behavior is related to endogenous expression of the myogenic transcription factor MYF5 and the propensity to enter into the cell cycle. Here, we report a role for miR-106b reinforcing MYF5 inhibition and blocking cell proliferation in a subset of highly quiescent SC population. miR-106b down-regulation occurs during SC activation and is required for proper muscle repair. In addition, miR-106b is increased in dystrophic mice, and intramuscular injection of antimiR in injured mdx mice enhances muscle regeneration promoting transcriptional changes involved in skeletal muscle differentiation. miR-106b inhibition promotes the engraftment of human muscle stem cells. Furthermore, miR-106b is also high in human dystrophic muscle stem cells and its inhibition improves intrinsic proliferative defects and increases their myogenic potential. This study demonstrates that miR-106b is an important modulator of SC quiescence, and that miR-106b may be a new target to develop therapeutic strategies to promote muscle regeneration improving the regenerative capabilities of injured dystrophic muscle.

Campilobacteriose genital bovina (CGB) e Tricomonose bovina (TB) são doenças infectocontagiosas de transmissão venérea, assintomáticas nos touros, sendo consideradas como importantes enfermidades causadoras de falha reprodutiva, morte embrionária ou abortamento, ocasionando perdas econômicas significativas em rebanhos bovinos infectados. CGB é causada pela bactéria Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis e Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus, e TB pelo protozoário Tritrichomonas foetus. O estado de Mato Grosso é detentor do maior rebanho bovino do Brasil, envolve a região do Pantanal Mato-Grossense que possui grandes extensões de terra, com ciclo anual de enchentes e a reprodução dos animais realizada predominantemente por monta natural, condições estas, favoráveis a presença de CGB e TB no rebanho. Considerando a carência de informações recentes sobre a ocorrência dessas enfermidades no estado de Mato Grosso, o objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a presença de Campylobacter spp. e Tritrichomonas foetus em 100 touros provenientes dos municípios de Poconé, Santo Antônio de Leverger e Nossa Senhora do Livramento, localizados na região pantaneira do estado de Mato Grosso. Amostras de esmegma prepucial foram coletadas por meio de escarificação via swab prepucial e armazenadas em solução salina a -80ºC. Para a detecção de Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis, Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus, e Tritrichomonas foetus, foi realizada a reação em cadeia pela polimerase (PCR). Apesar do questionário aplicado nas propriedades revelar condições epidemiológicas que favorecem a manutenção e disseminação desses patógenos, este estudo não identificou a presença dos referidos agentes em touros avaliados nas propriedades rurais do pantanal Mato-Grossense.

Abstract

Aims: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been associated with altered expression of the transcription factor Pitx2c and a high incidence of calcium release-induced afterdepolarizations. However, the relationship between Pitx2c expression and defective calcium homeostasis remains unclear and we here aimed to determine how Pitx2c expression affects calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and its impact on electrical activity in isolated atrial myocytes. Methods: To address this issue, we applied confocal calcium imaging and patch-clamp techniques to atrial myocytes isolated from a mouse model with conditional atrial-specific deletion of Pitx2c. Results: Our findings demonstrate that heterozygous deletion of Pitx2c doubles the calcium spark frequency, increases the frequency of sparks/site 1.5-fold, the calcium spark decay constant from 36 to 42 ms and the wave frequency from none to 3.2 min−1. Additionally, the cell capacitance increased by 30% and both the SR calcium load and the transient inward current (ITI) frequency were doubled. Furthermore, the fraction of cells with spontaneous action potentials increased from none to 44%. These effects of Pitx2c deficiency were comparable in right and left atrial myocytes, and homozygous deletion of Pitx2c did not induce any further effects on sparks, SR calcium load, ITI frequency or spontaneous action potentials. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that heterozygous Pitx2c deletion induces defects in calcium homeostasis and electrical activity that mimic derangements observed in right atrial myocytes from patients with AF and suggest that Pitx2c deficiency confers cellular electrophysiological hallmarks of AF to isolated atrial myocytes.

Macrophages are essential to muscle regeneration, as they regulate inflammation, carry out phagocytosis, and facilitate tissue repair. These cells exhibit phenotypic switching from pro-inflammatory (M1) to anti-inflammatory (M2) states during muscle repair, influencing myoblast proliferation, differentiation, and myofiber formation. In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), asynchronous muscle injuries disrupt the normal temporal stages of regeneration, leading to fibrosis and failed regeneration. Altered macrophage activity is associated with DMD progression and physiopathology. Abstract

Melatonin is a molecule with different antitumor actions in breast cancer and has been described as an inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Despite the recognition of the key role exerted by VEGF in tumor angiogenesis, limitations arise when developing models to test new antiangiogenic molecules. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop rapid, economic, high capacity and easy handling angiogenesis assays to test the antiangiogenic effects of melatonin and demonstrate its most effective dose to neutralize and interfere with the angiogenic sprouting effect induced by VEGF and MCF-7. To perform this, 3D endothelial cell (HUVEC) spheroids and a chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay were used. The results showed that VEGF and MCF-7 were able to stimulate the sprouting of the new vessels in 3D endothelial spheroids and the CAM assay, and that melatonin had an inhibitory effect on angiogenesis. Specifically, as the 1 mM pharmacological dose was the only effective dose able to inhibit the formation of ramifications around the alginate in the CAM assay model, this inhibition was shown to occur in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, these techniques represent novel tools for the development of antiangiogenic molecules such as melatonin, with possible implications for the therapy of breast cancer.

Abstract

Campylobacters are zoonotic pathogens with extensive animal and environmental reservoirs in spite of their fastidious nature. Campylobacter jejuni is the main bacterial cause of human gastroenteritis worldwide. Epidemiological studies have identified chicken meat as the main vehicle for human infection in industrialised countries. In some countries in the developing world, however, there is little information about Campylobacter prevalence in poultry and poultry meat. The dynamics of Campylobacter colonisation of chickens remain poorly understood. It is agreed that in most cases Campylobacter is transmitted to chickens horizontally from the farm environment. Different sources have been recognised, but their actual contribution to Campylobacter epidemiology remains a matter of debate. Water has rarely been identified as a possible source of Campylobacter contamination of chickens, but represents an understudied source. Research suggests that natural microbial communities might promote the survival of Campylobacter in environmental reservoirs by enabling incorporation into biofilms or interaction with protozoa. The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of Campylobacter ecology and epidemiology at the chicken farm level. The main objectives were to unravel the microbial communities associated with the drinking water system of broiler farms and their dynamics through the rearing cycle; to investigate the aerobic survival of the pathogen in co-culture with Pseudomonas environmental isolates and Acanthamoeba polyphaga; and to study Campylobacter prevalence in chicken farms in Uganda. A longitudinal study was conducted in a commercial broiler farm in the UK during a whole rearing cycle. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding about the microbial communities that inhabit the drinking water system of the broiler farm, and their implication in Campylobacter ecology in the chicken farm. 16S and 18S rRNA profiling of bulk water and biofilm samples were carried out over a seven-week production cycle period. The same samples were screened for the presence of Campylobacter by culture-dependent methods and molecular techniques. Analysis of 16S and 18S rRNA profiles suggested that microbial communities in the water distribution system are niche specific. Biofilm and bulk water samples harboured distinct communities. Moreover, bulk water communities inside the broiler house were significantly different from those sampled from the source water (R=0.88, p < 0.05). Inside the broiler house, microbial communities were found to vary across the rearing cycle. Similar changes in the dynamics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities were observed. Bacterial communities were dominated by the phylum Proteobacteria with a shift to Firmicutes towards the end of the cycle, mainly due to an increase in relative abundance of the genera Staphylococcus and Lactobacillus. Eukaryotic communities included a diversity of yeasts, fungi and protozoa. Campylobacter spp. were not detected on the UK broiler farm by culture-dependent techniques. However, the emerging gastrointestinal pathogen Helicobacter pullorum was isolated by culture towards the end of the rearing cycle. Another emerging pathogen C. ureolyticus was detected by both 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and PCR in water samples and chicken faeces. This is the first report of C. ureolyticus in association with poultry. 16S rRNA reads belonging to the genus Campylobacter were also found in the sequencing data towards the end of the rearing cycle suggesting that the pathogen could be in a viable but non-culturable state in the water distribution system. Little information is available on the epidemiology of campylobacteriosis in Africa. In Uganda Campylobacter infections have been reported in children, and gorillas have been identified as carriers but no information is available on Campylobacter prevalence in chickens. Studies in neighbouring countries, however, have shown high Campylobacter prevalence in poultry. A pilot study, visiting three small-scale farms around Fort Portal, was conducted to investigate the prevalence of Campylobacter in chickens in W. Uganda. Through a combination of culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques Campylobacter was detected in all three farms with high prevalence. Mixed presence of C. jejuni and C. coli in the same farm were observed, suggesting that chickens and chicken meat can be a source of human infection in Uganda. Pseudomonas spp. and protozoa of the genus Acanthamoeba are ubiquitous organisms that commonly co-localise in water and in the farm environment with Campylobacter. In vitro assays were performed to investigate whether they could enhance C. jejuni survival under atmospheric conditions. Co-culture assays indicated that certain Pseudomonas ssp. and strains were able to enhance Campylobacter survival with an increase in viable cell recovery ranging from 0.8 LOG to 4.5 LOG depending on the strain after 24 hours of aerobic incubation, while others showed no interactive effect or even reduced Campylobacter survival. A. polyphaga was shown to internalize C. jejuni, protecting it from the oxygen in the atmosphere and thus enhancing its survival with an increase in viable cell recovery of 2 LOG. These studies have further shown the importance of chicken farms in Campylobacter ecology. It has been demonstrated that microorganisms that are capable of enhancing Campylobacter survival in vitro are found in the water distribution system of the farm studied in UK. The characterisation of these communities for a whole rearing cycle has led to the detection of emerging human pathogens in broiler chicken production showing how doing exploratory work targeting whole microbial communities can inform epidemiology.

Abstract

Cardiac arrhythmias are prevalent among humans across all age ranges, affecting millions of people worldwide. While cardiac arrhythmias vary widely in their clinical presentation, they possess shared complex electrophysiologic properties at cellular level that have not been fully studied. Over the last decade, our current understanding of the functional roles of non-coding RNAs have progressively increased. microRNAs represent the most studied type of small ncRNAs and it has been demonstrated that miRNAs play essential roles in multiple biological contexts, including normal development and diseases. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the functional contribution of non-coding RNAs, primarily microRNAs, to the normal configuration of the cardiac action potential, as well as their association to distinct types of arrhythmogenic cardiac diseases.
