Introduction Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) represent a major public health concern on a global scale. The increasing prevalence of ASD worldwide, coupled with the arising demand for treatments, underscores its important role in the public mental health discourse. Ensuring the equitable integration of children with ASD and their families into all aspects of society becomes an imperative task, in order to eradicate the stigma associated with the broad spectrum of autism, encompassing both visible and concealed dimensions. Objectives The primary objective of this study was to determine the crude prevalence of ASD in Greece nationwide, while also examining regional disparities in both prevalence and therapies. The study spanned a three-year period from February 2019 to February 2022 and relied on retrospective data sourced from the Greek National Organization for Healthcare Services Provision (EOPYY). Methods EOPYY provided de-identified data, including information such as sex, age, diagnosis, and treatment for each child, facilitated by hashed social security numbers. Statistical analysis of the dataset was performed using the open-source statistical program R. Results A total of 18,245 children aged 2 -17 years were diagnosed with ASD in Greece, representing a nationwide crude prevalence rate of 1.16%. Regional disparities were evident, with prevalence rates ranging from 0.49% in the North Aegean to 1.57% in Crete. Over the three-year study period, a total of 15,328,327 non-medical therapies were prescribed, corresponding to an annual average of 264 therapies per child. Statistically significant differences between the thirteen regions in Greece were observed, ranging from 230 to 323 annual therapies per child. Conclusions Our findings align Greece’s ASD prevalence with the global estimate of 1 in 100 children, as per the World Health Organization. Disparities between rural and urban areas in Greece may be attributed to differences in diagnostic procedures and the availability and accessibility of specialized services for autistic individuals. Thus, the establishment of a national surveillance system for ASD is recommended to enhance our understanding of the autism spectrum, monitor changes in prevalence, and identify potential contributing factors to autism conditions. Furthermore, these evidence-based results offer invaluable insights for crafting policies concerning healthcare, education, and employment for individuals with ASD in order to ensure the development of people with autism, their wellbeing, and a good quality of life. This study sought to comprehensively evaluate the diagnosis, therapeutic interventions, and outcomes of individuals afflicted with malignant parotid tumors at a tertiary care otolaryngology department in Heilbronn, Germany, spanning the years 2010–2018. The primary objective was to juxtapose this dataset with findings from analogous single and multicenter investigations. We conducted a meticulous analysis of electronic medical records pertaining to 45 patients subjected to primary parotid cancer treatment. The male‐to‐female ratio was 3:2, with an average age of 61 years. Predominant histological types included mucoepidermoid and squamous cell carcinomas, with ultrasound emerging as the predominant diagnostic modality (97.8% sensitivity). Intraoperative frozen sections exhibited a high level of sensitivity. Notably, lymph node metastasis was prevalent in T3 tumors, frequently located intraparotid and at Neck level II. Solely one patient exhibited distant metastases (pulmonary). All patients underwent parotidectomy, and 29% necessitated a secondary procedure due to positive resection margins. Postoperative complications encompassed facial nerve palsy, seromas, and salivary fistulas. Adjuvant radiotherapy (38%) was recommended for high‐grade tumors, T3/T4 stage, N+, perineural invasion (PNI), and positive or uncertain surgical margins. Neck dissection was executed in 67% of instances, with 20% revealing occult lymph node metastases. Recurrence manifested in 22% of patients, primarily as locoregional recurrence (80%) and distant metastases (20%). The 3‐year recurrence‐free survival (RFS), cancer‐specific survival (CSS), and overall survival (OS) rates stood at 72.1%, 91.9%, and 87.5%, respectively. Noteworthy factors influencing RFS included preoperative facial palsy, T stage, resection margins, and PNI. In summary, the management of parotid cancer involving surgical interventions, neck dissection, and radiotherapy in high‐risk patients yielded commendable outcomes with minimal complications, showcasing survival rates exceeding 70%. Timely diagnosis at an early stage is imperative for achieving tumor‐free margins and enhancing survival rates. More assertive therapeutic strategies are advocated for cases presenting with preoperative facial nerve palsy and PNI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the multifactorial pathogenesis of sarcopenia, it is crucial to identify biomarkers that are risk factors for sarcopenia, and which therefore have a prognostic function. Aim: This narrative review aims to define a set of biomarkers associated with nutrition and sarcopenia. These biomarkers could contribute to individualized monitoring and enable preventive and therapeutic methods. Methods: Two electronic databases, PubMed and Google Scholar, were used. The search strategy was based on a controlled vocabulary (MeSH) and includes studies published up to February 2022. Discussion: Higher levels of serum uric acid are associated with higher handgrip strength and better muscle function in elderly people and, thus, may slow the progression of sarcopenia. Leptin, an adipokine secreted by adipose tissue, promotes the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which in turn lead to sarcopenia. This makes leptin a significant indirect biomarker for physical disability and sarcopenic obesity. Additionally, creatinine is a reliable biomarker for muscle mass status because of its easy accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Vitamin D status acts as a useful biomarker for predicting total mortality, hip fractures, early death, and the development of sarcopenia. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in dietary antioxidants and their effects on age-related losses of muscle mass and function. On the other hand, 3-Methylhistidine is a valuable biomarker for detecting increased muscle catabolism, as it is excreted through urine during muscle degradation. In addition, IGF-1, whose concentration in plasma is stimulated by food intake, is associated with the loss of skeletal muscle mass, which probably plays a crucial role in the progression of sarcopenia. Conclusions: Many nutritional biomarkers were found to be associated with sarcopenia, and can therefore be used as prognostic indexes and risk factors. Nutrition plays an important role in the prevention and management of sarcopenia, affecting muscle mass, strength, and function in elderly people.

Genetic polymorphisms in β1-, β2- and β3-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) have been associated with chronic non-communicable disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obesity, as well as β-agonists and antagonists response and toxicity. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency distribution of ADRB1 genetic variants Ser49Gly and Arg389Gly, ADRB2 variants Gly16Arg and Gln27Glu, ADRB3 variant Trp64Arg in a Southeastern European Caucasian (SEC) population sample and to establish a comparison with existing data from other human populations. A sample of 431 men and 590 women volunteered to participate in this genotyping analysis after anonymization and de-identification. Real Time PCR (Melting Curve Analysis) followed DNA extraction from buccal swabs and statistical analysis of the results was performed. The allele frequencies in the SEC population were Ser49 (90.3%), Arg389 (69.49%), Gly16 (61.61%), Gln27 (65.72%), and Trp64 (94.52%), while a Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) was detected in the population studied. Comparisons for the Ser49Gly, Gln27Glu, and Trp64Arg allele distributions demonstrated significant differences between SEC and the European group. European subgroups comparisons showed that allele distributions were similar for four of the five SNPs between SEC and Southwestern European Caucasians (SWC), while they were quite distinct from the Northwestern European Caucasians (NWC). These data underline the importance of interethnic variability of β-ARs genetic polymorphisms.

Background: Managing mental disorders in the perinatal period is a challenge. The most common mental disorders encountered in this period are major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and psychotic disorders. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the neurodevelopmental effects in children born to mothers who were on antipsychotic medication, during pregnancy. Methodology: Databases MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, PsychInfo, Google Scholar and Scopus searched according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The studies involved mothers with preconception or relapsed mental illness receiving antipsychotic medication during the perinatal period and their children were screened for any neurodevelopmental disorders. From the initial search of the literature, 277 articles emerged and applying the criteria, according to the methodology, we identified 15 articles. Results: Three studies were identified in which children were exposed and developed ADHD with a pooled odds ratio of 2.33 (95% CI = 1.69 - 3.20, p<0.001) indicating that children exposed to antipsychotics are more likely to develop ADHD than unexposed children. Regarding socio-emotional and mental development, it was found that the pooled odds ratio was 2.33 (95% CI = 1.68 - 3.22, p<0.001) indicating that exposed children are more likely to show delay compared to unexposed children. This relationship was statistically significant. Finally, it was found that children who were exposed and showed a delay in motor development had a pooled odds ratio of 2.93 (95% CI = 1.86 - 4.61, p<0.001). Discussion: Fetal exposure to antipsychotic medication can cause short-term developmental delays in motor, social-emotional, and adaptive behavior. Malignant melanoma involving the respiratory tract is nearly always metastatic in origin, and primary tumors are extremely rare. Published data on primary pulmonary malignant melanomas are limited. Up to now 40 relevant cases have been reported in the English literature. Herein, we report a case of a 56-year-old female patient who presented with intracranial metastases due to primary pulmonary melanoma. She underwent bronchoscopy and died 5 months after the initial diagnosis despite the administered biochemotherapy and subsequent immunotherapy. To establish the diagnosis of primary pulmonary malignant melanoma, any extrapulmonary origin was excluded by detailed examination and radiographic imaging. Moreover, an extensive review of the literature regarding this rare entity has been performed.
