Abstract: Abstract In this paper, we present the physics performance of the ESSnuSB experiment in the standard three flavor scenario using the updated neutrino flux calculated specifically for the ESSnuSB configuration and updated migration matrices for the far detector. Taking conservative systematic uncertainties corresponding to a normalization error of $$5\%$$ 5 % for signal and $$10\%$$ 10 % for background, we find that there is $$10\sigma $$ 10 σ $$(13\sigma )$$ ( 13 σ ) CP violation discovery sensitivity for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km) at $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = \pm 90^\circ $$ δ CP = ± 90 ∘ . The corresponding fraction of $$\delta _\mathrm{CP}$$ δ CP for which CP violation can be discovered at more than $$5 \sigma $$ 5 σ is $$70\%$$ 70 % . Regarding CP precision measurements, the $$1\sigma $$ 1 σ error associated with $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = 0^\circ $$ δ CP = 0 ∘ is around $$5^\circ $$ 5 ∘ and with $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = -90^\circ $$ δ CP = - 90 ∘ is around $$14^\circ $$ 14 ∘ $$(7^\circ )$$ ( 7 ∘ ) for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km). For hierarchy sensitivity, one can have $$3\sigma $$ 3 σ sensitivity for 540 km baseline except $$\delta _\mathrm{CP} = \pm 90^\circ $$ δ CP = ± 90 ∘ and $$5\sigma $$ 5 σ sensitivity for 360 km baseline for all values of $$\delta _\mathrm{CP}$$ δ CP . The octant of $$\theta _{23}$$ θ 23 can be determined at $$3 \sigma $$ 3 σ for the values of: $$\theta _{23} > 51^\circ $$ θ 23 > 51 ∘ ( $$\theta _{23} < 42^\circ $$ θ 23 < 42 ∘ and $$\theta _{23} > 49^\circ $$ θ 23 > 49 ∘ ) for baseline of 540 km (360 km). Regarding measurement precision of the atmospheric mixing parameters, the allowed values at $$3 \sigma $$ 3 σ are: $$40^\circ< \theta _{23} < 52^\circ $$ 40 ∘ < θ 23 < 52 ∘ ( $$42^\circ< \theta _{23} < 51.5^\circ $$ 42 ∘ < θ 23 < 51 . 5 ∘ ) and $$2.485 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2.485 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2< \varDelta m^2_{31} < 2.545 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2 < Δ m 31 2 < 2.545 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2$$ 2 ( $$2.49 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2.49 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2< \varDelta m^2_{31} < 2.54 \times 10^{-3}$$ 2 < Δ m 31 2 < 2.54 × 10 - 3 eV $$^2$$ 2 ) for the baseline of 540 km (360 km).

Abstract: ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the second maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, and the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization.

Abstract: Abstract We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

Abstract: Many future particle colliders require beam crabbing to recover geometric luminosity loss from the nonzero crossing angle at the interaction point (IP). A first demonstration experiment of crabbing with hadron beams was successfully carried out with high energy protons. This breakthrough result is fundamental to achieve the physics goals of the high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and the future circular collider (FCC). The expected peak luminosity gain (related to collision rate) is 65% for HL-LHC and even greater for the FCC. Novel beam physics experiments with proton beams in CERN’s Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) were performed to demonstrate several critical aspects for the operation of crab cavities in the future HL-LHC including transparency with a pair of cavities, a full characterization of the cavity impedance with high beam currents, controlled emittance growth from crab cavity induced rf noise.

Abstract: ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. 6. Prediction of beam losses during crab cavity quenches at the high luminosity LHC

Abstract: Studies of the crab cavities at KEKB revealed that the rf phase could shift by up to 50° within ∼50 μs during a quench; while the cavity voltage is still at approximately 75% of its nominal amplitude. If such a failure were to occur on the HL-LHC crab cavities, it is likely that the machine would sustain substantial damage to the beam line and surrounding infrastructure due to uncontrolled beam loss before the machine protection system could dump the beam. We have developed a low-level rf system model, including detuning mechanisms and beam loading, and use this to simulate the behavior of a crab cavity during a quench, modeling the low-level rf system, detuning mechanisms and beam loading. We supplement this with measurement data of the actual rf response of the proof of principle double-quarter wave crab cravity during a quench. Extrapolating these measurements to the HL-LHC, we show that Lorentz force detuning is the dominant effect leading to phase shifts in the crab cavity during quenches; rather than pressure detuning which is expected to be dominant for the KEKB crab cavities. The total frequency shift for the HL-LHC crab cavities during quenches is expected to be about 460 Hz, leading to a phase shift of no more than 3°. The results of the quench model are read into a particle tracking simulation, SixTrack, and used to determine the effect of quenches on the HL-LHC beam. The quench model has been benchmarked against the KEKB experimental measurements. In this paper we present the results of the simulations on a crab cavity failure for HL-LHC as well as for the SPS and show that beam loss is negligible when using a realistic low-level rf response.

Abstract: This conceptual design report provides a detailed account of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESS$\nu$SB) feasibility study. This facility has been proposed after the measurements reported in 2012 of a relatively large value of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, which raised the possibility of observing potential CP violation in the leptonic sector with conventional neutrino beams. The measured value of $\theta_{13}$ also privileges the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum for the discovery of CP violation instead of the more typically studied $1^{st}$ maximum. The sensitivity at this $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum is about three times higher than at the $1^{st}$ one, which implies a reduced influence of systematic errors. Working at the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum requires a very intense neutrino beam with an appropriate energy. The world's most intense pulsed spallation neutron source, the European Spallation Source (ESS), will have a proton linac operating at 5\,MW power, 2\,GeV kinetic energy and 14~Hz repetition rate (3~ms pulse duration, 4\% duty cycle) for neutron production. In this design study it is proposed to double the repetition rate and compress the beam pulses to the level of microseconds in order to provide an additional 5~MW proton beam for neutrino production. The physics performance has been evaluated for such a neutrino super beam, in conjunction with a megaton-scale underground water Cherenkov neutrino detector installed at a distance of 360--550\,km from ESS. The ESS proton linac upgrades, the accumulator ring required for proton-pulse compression, the target station design and optimisation, the near and far detector complexes, and the physics potential of the facility are all described in this report. Abstract: In this Snowmass 2021 white paper, we summarise the Conceptual Design of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESSvSB) experiment and its synergies with the possible future muon based facilities, e.g. a Low Energy nuSTORM and the Muon Collider. The ESSvSB will benefit from the high power, 5 MW, of the European Spallation Source (ESS) LINAC in Lund-Sweden to produce the world most intense neutrino beam, enabling measurements to be made at the second oscillation maximum. Assuming a ten-year exposure, physics simulations show that the CP-invariance violation can be established with a significance of 5 sigma over more than 70% of all values of delta CP and with an error in the measurement of the delta CP angle of less than 8 degree for all values of delta CP. However, several technological and physics challenges must be further studied before achieving a final Technical Design. Measuring at the 2nd oscillation maximum necessitates a very intense neutrino beam with the appropriate energy. For this, the ESS proton beam LINAC, which is designed to produce the world's most intense neutron beam, will need to be upgraded to 10 MW power, 2.5 GeV energy and 28 Hz beam pulse repetition rate. An accumulator ring will be required for the compression of the ESS LINAC beam pulse from 2.86 ms to 1.3 mus. A high power target station facility will be needed to produce a well-focused intense (super) mu-neutrino beam. The physics performance of that neutrino Super Beam in conjunction with a megaton underground Water Cherenkov neutrino far detector installed at a distance of either 360 km or 540 km from the ESS, the baseline, has been evaluated., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract: In this paper, we present the physics performance of the ESSnuSB experiment in the standard three flavor scenario using the updated neutrino flux calculated specifically for the ESSnuSB configuration and updated migration matrices for the far detector. Taking conservative systematic uncertainties corresponding to a normalization error of $5\%$ for signal and $10\%$ for background, we find that there is $10\sigma$ $(13\sigma)$ CP violation discovery sensitivity for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km) at $\delta_{\rm CP} = \pm 90^\circ$. The corresponding fraction of $\delta_{\rm CP}$ for which CP violation can be discovered at more than $5 \sigma$ is $70\%$. Regarding CP precision measurements, the $1\sigma$ error associated with $\delta_{\rm CP} = 0^\circ$ is around $5^\circ$ and with $\delta_{\rm CP} = -90^\circ$ is around $14^\circ$ $(7^\circ)$ for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km). For hierarchy sensitivity, one can have $3\sigma$ sensitivity for 540 km baseline except $\delta_{\rm CP} = \pm 90^\circ$ and $5\sigma$ sensitivity for 360 km baseline for all values of $\delta_{\rm CP}$. The octant of $\theta_{23}$ can be determined at $3 \sigma$ for the values of: $\theta_{23} > 51^\circ$ ($\theta_{23} < 42^\circ$ and $\theta_{23} > 49^\circ$) for baseline of 540 km (360 km). Regarding measurement precision of the atmospheric mixing parameters, the allowed values at $3 \sigma$ are: $40^\circ < \theta_{23} < 52^\circ$ ($42^\circ < \theta_{23} < 51.5^\circ$) and $2.485 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2 < \Delta m^2_{31} < 2.545 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ ($2.49 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2 < \Delta m^2_{31} < 2.54 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$) for the baseline of 540 km (360 km)., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: The properties of the neutrino provide a unique window on physics beyond that described by the standard model. The study of subleading effects in neutrino oscillations, and the race to discover CP-invariance violation in the lepton sector, has begun with the recent discovery that θ_{13}>0. The measured value of θ_{13} is large, emphasizing the need for a facility at which the systematic uncertainties can be reduced to the percent level. The neutrino factory, in which intense neutrino beams are produced from the decay of muons, has been shown to outperform all realistic alternatives and to be capable of making measurements of the requisite precision. Its unique discovery potential arises from the fact that only at the neutrino factory is it practical to produce high-energy electron (anti)neutrino beams of the required intensity. This paper presents the conceptual design of the neutrino factory accelerator facility developed by the European Commission Framework Programme 7 EUROν Design Study consortium. EUROν coordinated the European contributions to the International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) collaboration. The EUROν baseline accelerator facility will provide 10^{21} muon decays per year from 12.6 GeV stored muon beams serving a single neutrino detector situated at a source-detector distance of between 1 500 km and 2 500 km. A suite of near detectors will allow definitive neutrino-scattering experiments to be performed.

The pions decay to muons and pass through a capture channel known as the muon front end, before acceleration to 12.6 GeV. Abstract: The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ^{+} and μ^{-} beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular ^{6}He and ^{18}Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive.

18. Prediction of Beam Losses during Crab Cavity Quenches at the HL-LHC

Abstract: Studies of the crab cavities at KEKB revealed that the RF phase could shift by up to 50o within ~50 us during a quench; while the cavity voltage is still at approximately 75% of its nominal amplitude. If such a failure were to occur on the HL-LHC crab cavities, it is likely that the machine would sustain substantial damage to the beam line and surrounding infrastructure due to uncontrolled beam loss before the machine protection system could dump the beam. We have developed a low-level RF system model, including detuning mechanisms and beam loading, and use this to simulate the behaviour of a crab cavity during a quench, modeling the low-level RF system, detuning mechanisms and beam loading. We supplement this with measurement data of the actual RF response of the proof of principle Double-Quarter Wave Crab Cravity during a quench. Extrapolating these measurements to the HL-LHC, we show that Lorentz Force detuning is the dominant effect leading to phase shifts in the crab cavity during quenches; rather than pressure detuning which is expected to be dominant for the KEKB crab cavities. The total frequency shift for the HL-LHC crab cavities during quenches is expected to be about 460 Hz, leading to a phase shift of no more than 3o. The results of the quench model are read into a particle tracking simulation, SixTrack, and used to determine the effect of quenches on the HL-LHC beam. The quench model has been benchmarked against the KEKB experimental measurements. Abstract: The Double Triple Bend Achromat (DTBA) lattice~\cite{DTBAipac16} is a novel lattice design for a next generation 3 GeV Synchrotron Light Source. Starting from a modification of the Hybrid Multi Bend Achromat (HMBA) lattice~\cite{ESRF} developed at ESRF and inspired by the Double-Double Bend Achromat (DDBA) lattice~\cite{Diamond1, Diamond2} developed at Diamond, DTBA combines the advantages of both cells. The typical MBA lattice cells have one straight section dedicated to an insertion device, whereas this new cell layout has two such drifts, thus increasing the fraction of available space for the installation of insertion devices. The DTBA lattice achieves an emittance of $\sim\mathrm{132~pm}$, a dynamic aperture of $\mathrm{\sim\pm10\pm1~mm}$ (calculated at the injection point), an injection efficiency of $\mathrm{\sim\mathrm88\pm5\%}$ and a lifetime of $\mathrm{1.4\pm0.2~h}$ with errors. The characteristics of DTBA, the methodology and results of the linear and non-linear optics optimisations, with and without the presence of errors, are presented in detail.

Abstract: In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100 km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the third volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the hadron collider FCC-hh. It summarizes the FCC-hh physics discovery opportunities, presents the FCC-hh accelerator design, performance reach, and staged operation plan, discusses the underlying technologies, the civil engineering and technical infrastructure, and also sketches a possible implementation. Combining ingredients from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and adding novel technologies and approaches, the FCC-hh design aims at significantly extending the energy frontier to 100 TeV. Its unprecedented centre of-mass collision energy will make the FCC-hh a unique instrument to explore physics beyond the Standard Model, offering great direct sensitivity to new physics and discoveries.

Abstract: In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched, as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. This study covers a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee) and an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), which could, successively, be installed in the same 100 km tunnel. The scientific capabilities of the integrated FCC programme would serve the worldwide community throughout the 21st century. The FCC study also investigates an LHC energy upgrade, using FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the second volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the electron-positron collider FCC-ee. After summarizing the physics discovery opportunities, it presents the accelerator design, performance reach, a staged operation scenario, the underlying technologies, civil engineering, technical infrastructure, and an implementation plan. FCC-ee can be built with today’s technology. Most of the FCC-ee infrastructure could be reused for FCC-hh. Combining concepts from past and present lepton colliders and adding a few novel elements, the FCC-ee design promises outstandingly high luminosity. This will make the FCC-ee a unique precision instrument to study the heaviest known particles (Z, W and H bosons and the top quark), offering great direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics.

Abstract: The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a systematic investigation of ionization cooling with muon beams of momentum between 140 and 240\,MeV/c at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory ISIS facility. The measurement of ionization cooling in MICE relies on the selection of a pure sample of muons that traverse the experiment. To make this selection, the MICE Muon Beam is designed to deliver a beam of muons with less than $\sim$1\% contamination. To make the final muon selection, MICE employs a particle-identification (PID) system upstream and downstream of the cooling cell. The PID system includes time-of-flight hodoscopes, threshold-Cherenkov counters and calorimetry. The upper limit for the pion contamination measured in this paper is $f_\pi < 1.4\%$ at 90\% C.L., including systematic uncertainties. Therefore, the MICE Muon Beam is able to meet the stringent pion-contamination requirements of the study of ionization cooling., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a detailed study of ionization cooling to evaluate the feasibility of the technique. To carry out this program, MICE requires an efficient particle-identification (PID) system to identify muons. The Electron-Muon Ranger (EMR) is a fully-active tracking-calorimeter that forms part of the PID system and tags muons that traverse the cooling channel without decaying. The detector is capable of identifying electrons with an efficiency of 98.6%, providing a purity for the MICE beam that exceeds 99.8%. The EMR also proved to be a powerful tool for the reconstruction of muon momenta in the range 100-280 MeV/$c$., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures

Abstract: The proposed Long Baseline Neutrino Observatory (LBNO) initially consists of $\sim 20$ kton liquid double phase TPC complemented by a magnetised iron calorimeter, to be installed at the Pyh\"asalmi mine, at a distance of 2300 km from CERN. The conventional neutrino beam is produced by 400 GeV protons accelerated at the SPS accelerator delivering 700 kW of power. The long baseline provides a unique opportunity to study neutrino flavour oscillations over their 1st and 2nd oscillation maxima exploring the $L/E$ behaviour, and distinguishing effects arising from $\delta_{CP}$ and matter. In this paper we show how this comprehensive physics case can be further enhanced and complemented if a neutrino beam produced at the Protvino IHEP accelerator complex, at a distance of 1160 km, and with modest power of 450 kW is aimed towards the same far detectors. We show that the coupling of two independent sub-MW conventional neutrino and antineutrino beams at different baselines from CERN and Protvino will allow to measure CP violation in the leptonic sector at a confidence level of at least $3\sigma$ for 50\% of the true values of $\delta_{CP}$ with a 20 kton detector. With a far detector of 70 kton, the combination allows a $3\sigma$ sensitivity for 75\% of the true values of $\delta_{CP}$ after 10 years of running. Running two independent neutrino beams, each at a power below 1 MW, is more within today's state of the art than the long-term operation of a new single high-energy multi-MW facility, which has several technical challenges and will likely require a learning curve., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: One of the main goals of the Long Baseline Neutrino Observatory (LBNO) is to study the $L/E$ behaviour (spectral information) of the electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance probabilities, in order to determine the unknown CP-violation phase $\delta_{CP}$ and discover CP-violation in the leptonic sector. The result is based on the measurement of the appearance probabilities in a broad range of energies, covering t he 1st and 2nd oscillation maxima, at a very long baseline of 2300 km. The sensitivity of the experiment can be maximised by optimising the energy spectra of the neutrino and anti-neutrino fluxes. Such an optimisation requires exploring an extended range of parameters describing in details the geometries and properties of the primary protons, hadron target and focusing elements in the neutrino beam line. In this paper we present a numerical solution that leads to an optimised energy spectra and study its impact on the sensitivity of LBNO to discover leptonic CP violation. In the optimised flux both 1st and 2nd oscillation maxima play an important role in the CP sensitivity. The studies also show that this configuration is less sensitive to systematic errors (e.g. on the total event rates) than an experiment which mainly relies on the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry at the 1st maximum to determine the existence of CP-violation., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures

Abstract: The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a systematic investigation of ionization cooling with muon beams of momentum between 140 and 240 MeV/c at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory ISIS facility. The measurement of ionization cooling in MICE relies on the selection of a pure sample of muons that traverse the experiment. To make this selection, the MICE Muon Beam is designed to deliver a beam of muons with less than ∼1% contamination. To make the final muon selection, MICE employs a particle-identification (PID) system upstream and downstream of the cooling cell. The PID system includes time-of-flight hodoscopes, threshold-Cherenkov counters and calorimetry. The upper limit for the pion contamination measured in this paper is fπ < 1.4% at 90% C.L., including systematic uncertainties. Therefore, the MICE Muon Beam is able to meet the stringent pion-contamination requirements of the study of ionization cooling.

Abstract: The next generation neutrino observatory proposed by the LBNO collaboration will address fundamental questions in particle and astroparticle physics. The experiment consists of a far detector, in its first stage a 20 kt LAr double phase TPC and a magnetised iron calorimeter, situated at 2300 km from CERN and a near detector based on a high-pressure argon gas TPC. The long baseline provides a unique opportunity to study neutrino flavour oscillations over their 1st and 2nd oscillation maxima exploring the $L/E$ behaviour, and distinguishing effects arising from $\delta_{CP}$ and matter. In this paper we have reevaluated the physics potential of this setup for determining the mass hierarchy (MH) and discovering CP-violation (CPV), using a conventional neutrino beam from the CERN SPS with a power of 750 kW. We use conservative assumptions on the knowledge of oscillation parameter priors and systematic uncertainties. The impact of each systematic error and the precision of oscillation prior is shown. We demonstrate that the first stage of LBNO can determine unambiguously the MH to $>5\sigma$C.L. over the whole phase space. We show that the statistical treatment of the experiment is of very high importance, resulting in the conclusion that LBNO has $\sim$ 100% probability to determine the MH in at most 4-5 years of running. Since the knowledge of MH is indispensable to extract $\delta_{CP}$ from the data, the first LBNO phase can convincingly give evidence for CPV on the $3\sigma$C.L. using today's knowledge on oscillation parameters and realistic assumptions on the systematic uncertainties., Comment: 35 pages, 22 figures, added authors

Abstract: Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world's brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

Abstract: ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the second maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, and the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization.

Abstract: The next generation of lepton flavor violation experiments need high intensity and high quality muon beams. Production of such beams requires sending a short, high intensity proton pulse to the pion production target, capturing pions and collecting the resulting muons in the large acceptance transport system. The substantial increase of beam quality can be obtained by applying the RF phase rotation on the muon beam in the dedicated FFAG ring, which was proposed for the PRISM project.This allows to reduce the momentum spread of the beam and to purify from the unwanted components like pions or secondary protons. A PRISM Task Force is addressing the accelerator and detector issues that need to be solved in order to realize the PRISM experiment. The parameters of the required proton beam, the principles of the PRISM experiment and the baseline FFAG design are introduced. The spectrum of alternative designs for the PRISM FFAG ring are shown. Progress on ring main systems like injection and RF are presented. Abstract: A novel single-particle technique to measure emittance has been developed and used to characterise seventeen different muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE). The muon beams, whose mean momenta vary from 171 to 281 MeV/c, have emittances of approximately 1.5--2.3 \pi mm-rad horizontally and 0.6--1.0 \pi mm-rad vertically, a horizontal dispersion of 90--190 mm and momentum spreads of about 25 MeV/c. There is reasonable agreement between the measured parameters of the beams and the results of simulations. Abstract: The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fr\'ejus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of {\mu}+ and {\mu}- beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular 6He and 18Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fr\'ejus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive., Comment: Results from the Framework Programme 7 project EUROnu, which studied three possible accelerator facilities for future high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe

Abstract: This conceptual design report provides a detailed account of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESS$\nu$SB) feasibility study. This facility has been proposed after the measurements reported in 2012 of a relatively large value of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, which raised the possibility of observing potential CP violation in the leptonic sector with conventional neutrino beams. The measured value of $\theta_{13}$ also privileges the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum for the discovery of CP violation instead of the more typically studied $1^{st}$ maximum. The sensitivity at this $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum is about three times higher than at the $1^{st}$ one, which implies a reduced influence of systematic errors. Working at the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum requires a very intense neutrino beam with an appropriate energy. The world's most intense pulsed spallation neutron source, the European Spallation Source (ESS), will have a proton linac operating at 5\,MW power, 2\,GeV kinetic energy and 14~Hz repetition rate (3~ms pulse duration, 4\% duty cycle) for neutron production. In this design study it is proposed to double the repetition rate and compress the beam pulses to the level of microseconds in order to provide an additional 5~MW proton beam for neutrino production. The physics performance has been evaluated for such a neutrino super beam, in conjunction with a megaton-scale underground water Cherenkov neutrino detector installed at a distance of 360--550\,km from ESS. The ESS proton linac upgrades, the accumulator ring required for proton-pulse compression, the target station design and optimisation, the near and far detector complexes, and the physics potential of the facility are all described in this report. The ESS linac will be operational by 2025, at which point the implementation of upgrades for the neutrino facility could begin., Comment: 216 pages

Abstract: The International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) was established by the community at the ninth "International Workshop on Neutrino Factories, super-beams, and beta- beams" which was held in Okayama in August 2007. The IDS-NF mandate is to deliver the Reference Design Report (RDR) for the facility on the timescale of 2012/13. In addition, the mandate for the study [3] requires an Interim Design Report to be delivered midway through the project as a step on the way to the RDR. This document, the IDR, has two functions: it marks the point in the IDS-NF at which the emphasis turns to the engineering studies required to deliver the RDR and it documents baseline concepts for the accelerator complex, the neutrino detectors, and the instrumentation systems. The IDS-NF is, in essence, a site-independent study. Example sites, CERN, FNAL, and RAL, have been identified to allow site-specific issues to be addressed in the cost analysis that will be presented in the RDR. The choice of example sites should not be interpreted as implying a preferred choice of site for the facility.

49. Ionisation cooling lattices for the neutrino factory

Abstract: The future accelerator complex of the Neutrino Factory will have an excellent precision and outstanding discovery reach, and is therefore a facility of choice for precise neutrino oscillation measurements. In the Neutrino Factory, muons are accumulated into storage rings and decay to neutrinos. However, due to the fact that the muon beam is produced occupying a large transverse phase-space, it is essential that its emittance is decreased using ionisation cooling. The reference ionisation cooling lattice of the Neutrino Factory has a large magnetic field at the position of the RF cavities, and there is a strong concern this can lead to RF breakdown. Therefore, there lies a great necessity for alternative cooling lattices to be found. This thesis presents several cooling lattices that were designed aiming to mitigate the problem of the RF breakdown in the presence of a magnetic field, that the reference lattice suffers from. In particular, amongst these lattices, a promising new configuration which makes use of a pair of opposite polarity and homocentric coils, named “Bucked Coils”, is presented. The Bucked Coils lattice not only manages to successfully achieve a virtually zero longitudinal magnetic field at the position of the RF cavities, but also obtains a better transmission than the reference lattice. A detailed comparison between the reference and the new lattices is presented with respect to the magnetic field, transmission and cooling efficiency. A possible extension of the work is also discussed. A six-dimensional cooling could be used at a Neutrino Factory but is essential for a Muon Collider. Another novel configuration, which aims to achieve 6D ionisation cooling, is presented in this thesis. This new lattice creates dispersion with the use of dipoles, and a correlation between energy loss and position with the use of wedge absorbers. A detailed description of this lattice configuration and analysis is given, together with preliminary results.

Abstract: A novel single-particle technique to measure emittance has been developed and used to characterise seventeen different muon beams for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE). The muon beams, whose mean momenta vary from 171 to 281 MeV/c, have emittances of approximately 1.2-2.3 π mm-rad horizontally and 0.6-1.0 π mm-rad vertically, a horizontal dispersion of 90-190 mm and momentum spreads of about 25 MeV/c. There is reasonable agreement between the measured parameters of the beams and the results of simulations. The beams are found to meet the requirements of MICE. © 2013 The Author(s).
