Background: Gari and eba, forms of cassava semolina, are mainly consumed in Nigeria and other West African countries. This study aimed to define the critical quality traits of gari and eba, to measure their heritability, to define medium and high throughput instrumental methods for use by breeders, and to link the traits with consumer preferences. The definition of a food product's profiles, including its biophysical, sensory, and textural qualities, and the identification of the characteristics that determine its acceptability, are important if new genotypes are to be adopted successfully. Results: Eighty cassava genotypes and varieties (three different sets) from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) research farm were used for the study. Participatory processing and consumer testing data on different types of gari and eba products were integrated to prioritize the traits preferred by processors and consumers. The color, sensory, and instrumental textural properties of these products were determined using standard analytical methods, and standard operating protocols (SOPs) developed by the RTBfoods project (Breeding Roots, Tubers, and Banana Products for End-user Preferences, https://rtbfoods.cirad.fr). There were significant (P < 0.05) correlations between instrumental hardness and sensory hardness and between adhesiveness and sensory moldability. Principal component analysis showed broad discrimination amongst the cassava genotypes and the association of the genotypes concerning the color and textural properties. Conclusions: The color properties of gari and eba, together with instrumental measures of hardness and cohesiveness, are important quantitative discriminants of cassava genotypes.

BACKGROUND: Cassava processing is a crucial source of livelihood for rural farmers and processors in Nigeria and Cameroon. This study investigated the varietal effect on the processing productivity of women farmer processors within their working environment and compared this with the food product quality as evaluated by the processors and the field yield. Field trials were established in Nigeria (Benue and Osun state) and Cameroon (Littoral region). Eight cassava genotypes were evaluated. These eight varieties included newly bred genotypes, commercial checks and varieties provided and preferred by the processors. The roots of these genotypes were harvested and processed into gari and eba by processors. The time of each processing step was recorded. Processors assessed the quality of the roots and food products using pairwise ranking. RESULTS: In the field trials in Cameroon and Nigeria (Benue state), the newly bred genotypes showed superior performance in terms of dry matter content and fresh and dry yield. During processing, genotypes showed significant variation for most assessed parameters in both countries. Some newly bred varieties exhibited lower productivity that can make them more prone to drudgery than the local commercial checks and the varieties provided and preferred by the processors. Newly bred varieties were mostly ranked higher or equal to processors' preferred varieties concerning fresh root and food product quality. In the Cameroon location there were significant varietal differences in processing productivity and drudgery index which suggest that the particular processing methods there - such as pressing methods and fermentation time - cause these varietal differences to matter more. CONCLUSIONS: The varieties that were tested were observed to differ in yield, product quality, processing productivity, and potential drudgery levels. Despite the fact that using social media for arranging trips is becoming increasingly important, community-based tourism (CBT) of Malaysian rural homestay operators still heavily rely on traditional marketing platforms and third parties’ assistance to gain tourist attraction. Previous studies found a lack of awareness constraining social media marketing adoption in small enterprises. Hence, this study aims at exploring the awareness of homestay operators regarding the use of social media as a marketing tool in CBT of rural homestay operators in Malaysia. A survey study was done by using a semi-structured interview involving nine respondents from nine homestays across Johor, Malaysia. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings show that the community still has low awareness of the digital divide as well as the unavailability of relevant human resources and technical expertise. It also indicated that the homestays’ operators still use Malay rather than English on their social media promotion and interaction, which restricts their chances to access global markets. It is critical for operators of homestays to improve their competencies to maintain their businesses and increase their level of market competitiveness. Therefore, this study constitutes an essential call for stakeholders’ attention to enhance CBT rural homestay operators’ awareness through effective training. Accordingly, it closes the digital gaps that challenge social media marketing awareness and hence encourages technology adoption in the community.

Importance: Both elective sigmoid resection and conservative treatment are options for patients with recurrent, complicated, or persistent painful diverticulitis; understanding outcomes following each can help inform decision-making. Objective: To compare outcomes of elective sigmoid resection and conservative treatment for patients with recurrent, complicated, or persistent painful diverticulitis at 2-year follow-up. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter parallel open-label individually randomized clinical trial comparing elective sigmoid resection to conservative treatment in patients with recurrent, complicated, or persistent painful diverticulitis was carried out in 5 Finnish hospitals between September 2014 and October 2018. Follow-up up to 2 years is reported. Of 85 patients randomized and included, 75 and 70 were available for QOL outcomes at 1 year and 2 years, respectively, and 79 and 78 were available for the recurrence outcome at 1 year and 2 years, respectively. The present analysis was conducted from September 2015 to June 2022. Interventions: Laparoscopic elective sigmoid resection vs conservative treatment (patient education and fiber supplementation). Main Outcomes and Measures: Prespecified secondary outcomes included Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) score, complications, and recurrences within 2 years. Results: Ninety patients (28 male [31%]; mean [SD] age, 54.11 [11.9] years and 62 female [69%]; mean [SD] age, 57.13 [7.6] years) were randomized either to elective sigmoid resection or conservative treatment. After exclusions, 41 patients in the surgery group and 44 in the conservative group were included in the intention-to-treat analyses. Eight patients (18%) in the conservative treatment group underwent sigmoid resection within 2 years. The mean GIQLI score at 1 year was 9.51 points higher in the surgery group compared to the conservative group (mean [SD], 118.54 [17.95] vs 109.03 [19.32]; 95% CI, 0.83-18.18

A cement board is a composite material mostly comprised natural fibre and cement. Cement board is mainly used in roofing, raised floors, dropped ceilings, prefabricated structures, office containers, and other building components. Fibres in cement composites from discarded palm oil fruit bunches have been used to increase the quality of construction materials. Therefore, the impact density of the natural fibre cement board is essential to enhance the physical and mechanical properties. However, research on untreated fibre at various densities has not been compressively discussed in previous studies. Therefore, this research used empty fruit bunch (EFB) fibre in manufacturing empty fruit bunch cement boards (EFBCB) with a cement-to-fibre ratio of 3:1 and thickness of 12 mm. Three target density variations, 1100 kg/m3 , 1200 kg/m3 and 1300 kg/m3 , were applied in this study to obtain their effect on physical and mechanical properties. The results revealed EFBCB sample with a target density of 1300 kg/m3 showed the most promising results. This sample’s average thickness is 12.38 mm after a 28-day curing period. Besides, at 1300 kg/m3 target density, EFBCB achieved the lowest thickness swelling (TS) value at 1.82%, highest internal bonding (IB) at 0.164 N/mm2 , highest modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) at 1398 N/mm2 and 3.51 N/mm2 , respectively. Thus, increasing the cement board density and improving the physical and mechanical properties of EFBCB. This study demonstrates that EFB has the capacity to be one of the potential natural fibres for green building materials.

A pre-treatment of graphene with bleach is considered one of the possible purification methods after liquid-phase exfoliation. However, the effect of this treatment on the mechanical reinforcement strategy for polymer film is yet to be investigated to date. In this full work, the influence of the C/O ratio, ID/IG, and volume of graphene after combination with cellulose tissue on the resulting stiffness of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite film has been extensively studied. It is noticed that the incorporation of 30 ml graphene that had been pre-treated for 3 h into PVA had produced the best increment in elastic modulus (1.6 GPa against 0.4 GPa) while a shorter pre-treatment duration of graphene (1 h) would require more graphene volume (40 ml) to match the previous stiffness improvement level. By using the collected experimental data (90 samples), we further modeled the effect of tissue and PVA mass, C/O ratio, ID/IG, and graphene volume on modulus using machine learning (ML) algorithms.
