Abstract The optical, photoluminescence, and electrical properties of Poly(Z)-PTI and Poly(E)-PTI, two Poly-Pyrrol-Thiazol-Imine polymers with comparable chemical structures but distinct configurations, were examined. Using the dip-casting method, polymer films were deposited on ITO substrates. UV-VIS spectroscopy revealed that both polymers diverged between 500 and 800 nm, showing the impact of molecular arrangement, but showed similar absorption behavior for wavelengths shorter than 500 nm. For Poly(Z)-PTI, the direct optical energy gaps were 2.06 eV, while for Poly(E)-PTI, they were 1.78 eV. Poly(Z)-PTI displayed an emission peak at 610 nm (red) according to laser photoluminescence spectra, while Poly(E)-PTI peaked at 563 nm (green-yellow). The capacitance behavior was revealed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Nyquist plots suggested an equivalent circuit model of Rs (CRct)(QR)(CR) for both polymers, and the relaxation times were 15.9 ns for Poly(Z)-PTI and 89.5 ns for Poly(E)-PTI. The Mott-Schottky analysis verified the n-type conductivity, revealing 2.18 × 1016 cm− 3 carrier densities for Poly(Z)-PTI and 1.78 × 1016 cm− 3 for Poly(E)-PTI. At lower frequencies, both polymers exhibited limited conductivity and large dielectric constants. Insights into the possible uses of Poly-Pyrrol-Thiazol-Imine polymers in electrical and optoelectronic devices are provided by this study, which emphasizes the influence of molecular configuration on these polymers’ characteristics.

Abstract Background The transition to college life is a highly demanding period for all students, especially when enrolling into an academically-challenging field as that of medicine. First-generation medical students represent an overlooked demographic and are thought to be more vulnerable to the stressors of college. This study’s aim is to explore the differences between first and continuing-generation medical students in Egypt regarding their academic performance, extracurricular training opportunities and future expectations. Methods Two identical 24-item online questionnaires, in English and Arabic were distributed with five main themes: general demographics, academic performance, extracurricular training opportunities (outpatient clinics, hospitals and operating rooms), future expectations and if participants have relatives in the medical field. Results Responses from 1652 eligible respondents from all 36 medical universities in Egypt were received. Continuing-generation medical students achieved a higher cumulative grade, with 46.1% getting an “Excellent” grade compared to only 38.4% in the first-generation. Abstract Background Cirrhotic refractory ascites (RA) patients have few alternatives for treatment. Empagliflozin is now known to have natriuretic and neurohormonal modulatory effects. This research investigated the safety and efficacy of empagliflozin in the management of RA when added to the standard of care (SoC) compared to SoC alone. Methods Patients were randomized to receive either a fixed dose of 10 mg of empagliflozin plus standard of care (SoC) or SoC alone. Patients were followed up for 3 months. The primary endpoint was achieving no need for large-volume paracentesis (LVP). Results Forty-two patients were randomized equally, and intention-to-treat was performed. Abstract Background In light of the ongoing monkeypox (MPOX) epidemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have been in contact with various diseases. Therefore, they should take appropriate preventive and control measures to maintain their health. This study assessed Egyptian HCWs’ intentions to take MPOX vaccines. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted using social media platforms between September 27 and November 4, 2022. An anonymous online survey using the 5C scale was conducted using convenience and snowball sampling methods to assess the five psychological antecedents of vaccination (i.e., confidence, constraints, complacency, calculation, and collective responsibility). Results A total of 399 HCWs with a mean age of 32.6 ± 5.7 participated in this study. Of them, 89.7% were female. The five C psychological antecedents of vaccination were as follows: 55.9% were confident about vaccination, 50.6% were complacent, 56.6% experienced constraints, 60.7% calculated the risk and benefit, and 58.4% had collective responsibility. Multivariate analysis showed that high income level and having information about MPOX were significant predictors of confidence in the MPOX vaccines (adjusted odds ratio ((AOR) = 4.19, 95% CI (1.12– 15.59), P = 0.032). Participants aged 31–45 years and 19–30 years showed significant association (AOR = 2.46, 95% CI (0.85–7.15), P = 0.096) and (AOR = 4.19, 95% CI (1.39–12.64), P = 0.011), respectively. Having an idea about the MPOX vaccines significantly predicted the complacency domain (AOR = 3.77, 95%CI (1.47–9.65, P = 0.006). Moreover, precollege/undergraduate education and having an idea about MPOX vaccination were significant predictors of the constraint domain (AOR = 1.81.95% CI (1.09–2.99, P = 0.020), (AOR = 2.70, 95% CI (1.05–6.95, P = 0.038), respectively). Female sex, having a diploma, postgraduate studies, and having an idea about MPOX vaccine significantly predicted calculation domain (AOR = 2.06, 95% CI (1.05–4.04, P = 0.035), (AOR = 3.98,95% CI (1.33–11.87, P = 0.013), (AOR = 2.02, 95% CI (1.25–3.26, P = 0.004) & (AOR = 2.75. 95% CI (1.05–7.18, P = 0.039), respectively. The only significant predictor of collective responsibility was having a diploma and postgraduate studies (AOR = 3.44, 95% CI (1.21–9.78, P = 0.020), (AOR = 1.90,95% CI (1.17–3.09, P = 0.009). Conclusions Efforts to control MPOX should focus on promoting protective measures such as the vaccination of HCWs as well as raising their awareness about the updated information regarding the virus and the approved vaccines.

Abstract In the rice-based system of mid-latitudes, mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer serves as the largest source of the N cycle due to an insufficient supply of N from organic sources causing higher N losses due to varying soil and environmental factors. However, aiming to improve soil organic matter (OM) and nutrients availability using the best environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable cultural and agronomic management practices are necessary. This study aimed to enhance nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and grain yield in rice-based systems of mid-latitudes by partially replacing inorganic N fertilizer with organic inputs. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) was employed to evaluate the effects of sole mineral N fertilizer (urea) and its combinations with organic sources—farmyard manure (FYM) and poultry compost—on different elite green super rice (GSR) genotypes and were named as NUYT-1, NUYT-2, NUYT-3, NUYT-4, NUYT-5, and NUYT-6. The study was conducted during the 2022 and 2023 rice growing seasons at the Rice Research Program, Crop Sciences Institute (CSI), National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), Islamabad, one of the mid-latitudes of Pakistan. The key objective was to determine the most effective N management strategy for optimizing plant growth, N content in soil and plants, and overall crop productivity. The results revealed that the combined application of poultry compost and mineral urea significantly enhanced soil and leaf N content (1.36 g kg− 1 and 3.06 mg cm− 2, respectively) and plant morphophysiological traits compared to sole urea application. Maximum shoot dry weight (SDW) and root dry weight (RDW) were observed in compost-applied treatment with the values of 77.62 g hill− 1 and 8.36 g hill− 1, respectively. The two-year mean data indicated that applying 150 kg N ha⁻1, with half provided by organic sources (10 tons ha⁻1 FYM or poultry compost) and the remainder by mineral urea, resulted in the highest N uptake, utilization, and plant productivity. Thus, integrated management of organic carbon sources and inorganic fertilizers may sustain the productivity of rice-based systems more eco-efficiently. Further research is recommended to explore root and shoot morphophysiological, molecular, and biochemical responses under varying N regimes, aiming to develop N-efficient rice varieties through advanced breeding programs.

Abstract Background The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a widely utilised framework for understanding vaccination behaviour against COVID-19. This study assessed the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine booster doses in Ghana and identified predictors using HBM domains, including perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action. Additionally, it examined the sources of information about COVID-19 vaccines. Methods We employed a cross-sectional quantitative design, using convenient and snowball sampling methods to recruit participants. Between March 20 and May 10, 2023, 822 Ghanaians completed a predesigned self-administered online survey via commonly used social media platforms (WhatsApp, Facebook, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn). The study used a binary logistic regression to predict COVID-19 booster dose acceptance. Results The respondents had a mean age of 29.3 ± 6.2, with 55.5 being males, 53.0% being single/never married, 93.7% having tertiary education, 83.0% being Christians, 59.1% were healthcare workers, 57.8% residing in urban areas, 95.5% having no chronic disease, 90.6% reporting negative COVID-19 history, and 78.3% reporting no reported relative/friend infected with COVID-19. The study showed that 81.1% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 78.4 − 83.8%] of respondents received the COVID-19 vaccine, and 58.3% [95% CI = 54.2 − 62.5%] of respondents were willing to accept the COVID-19 booster dose. The main reasons for non-acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine booster doses were personal reasons (41.7%) and experienced side effects or fear of side effects (32.4%). Regression analysis revealed that perceived benefits and perceived barriers (specifically worrying about serious risk factors) were the significant predictors of accepting COVID-19 booster doses in Ghana. Conclusions Many respondents were willing to receive the COVID-19 booster dose. Personal reasons, fear of side effects, and experienced side effects were the main reasons for refusing COVID-19 booster doses. Perceived benefits and perceived barriers predicted COVID-19 booster dose acceptance in Ghana. Policymakers should consider these factors in designing public health interventions to increase the patronage of COVID-19 booster doses.

Abstract Introduction Obesity is a known risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the impact of obesity severity and duration on CKD incidence is unclear. Methods Cumulative Excess Weight (CEW) and Cumulative Excess Waist Circumference (CEWC) scores were calculated, which represent the accumulation of deviations from expected body mass index and waist circumference values over time until the development of CKD or the end of the follow-up period. Time-dependent Cox models were used to investigate the sex-stratified association of CEW and CEWC with CKD incidence while controlling for confounding variables. Results Out of the 8697 participants who were evaluated in this study, 56% (4865) were women and the mean age was 40 ± 14. During the 15-year follow-up period, 41.7% (3629) of the participants developed CKD. Among the CKD patients, 65.4% (829) of men and 77.9% (1839) of women had a BMI higher than 25, and high WC was found to be 73.7% (934) and 55.3% (1306) for men and women, respectively. We found a significant association between one standard deviation change of CEW and the development of CKD in both sexes (fully adjusted hazard ratios and 95% CI of CEW in men and women were 1.155 [1.081–1.232) and 1.105 (1.047–1.167)]. However, the association between CEWC and CKD development was only significant among men participants [HR = 1.074 (1.006–1.147)]. Conclusion Over a 15-year follow-up, the accumulation of general and central obesity was associated with an increased incidence of CKD development.

Abstract Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are biologically inspired algorithms designed to simulate the way in which the human brain processes information. In sample preparation for bioanalysis, liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) represents an important step with the extraction solvent selection is the key laborious step. In the current work, a robust and reliable ANNs model for LLE solvent prediction was generated which could predict the suitable solvent for analyte extraction. The developed ANNs model takes a set of chosen descriptors for the cited analyte as an input and predicts the corresponding Hansen solubility parameters of the suitable extraction solvent as a model output. Then, from the solvent combination’s appendix, the analyst can identify the proposed extraction solvents' combination for the cited analyte easily and efficiently. For the experimental validation of the model prediction capabilities, twenty structurally diverse drugs belonging to different pharmacological classes were extracted from human plasma. The extraction process was performed using the predicted extraction solvent combination for each drug and quantitively estimated by HPLC/UV methods to assess their extraction recovery. The developed LLE solvent prediction model is in- line with the global trend towards green chemistry since it limits the consumption of organic solvents.

Abstract Background Historically, epidemics have been accompanied by the concurrent emergence of stigma, prejudice, and xenophobia. This scoping review aimed to describe and map published research targeting ethical values concerning monkeypox (mpox). In addition, it aimed to understand the research gaps related to mpox associated stigma. Methods We comprehensively searched databases (PubMed Central, PubMed Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Ovid, and Google Scholar) to identify published literature concerning mpox ethical issues and stigma from May 6, 2022, to February 15, 2023. The key search terms used were “monkeypox”, “ethics”, “morals”, “social stigma”, “privacy”, “confidentiality”, “secrecy”, “privilege”, “egoism”, and “metaethics”. This scoping review followed the framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley in 2005 and was further improved by the recommendations of Levac et al. in 2010. Results The search strategies employed in the scoping review yielded a total of 454 articles. We analyzed the sources, types, and topics of the retrieved articles/studies. The authors were able to identify 32 studies that met inclusion criteria. Six of the 32 included studies were primary research. The study revealed that the ongoing mpox outbreak is contending with a notable surge in misinformation and societal stigma. It highlights the adverse impacts of stigma and ethical concerns associated with mpox, which can negatively affect people with the disease. Conclusion The study’s findings underscore the imperative need to enhance public awareness; involve civil society; and promote collaboration among policymakers, medical communities, and social media platforms. These collective endeavors are crucial for mitigating stigma, averting human-to-human transmission, tackling racism, and dispelling misconceptions associated with the outbreak.

Abstract Background Female breast cancer stands as the prime type of cancer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), with a high incidence and mortality rates. This study assessed the burden of female breast cancer in KSA by analyzing and forecasting its incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Methods We retrieved data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) about female breast cancer from 1990 to 2021. Time-series analysis used the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to forecast female breast cancer statistics from 2022 to 2026. Results From 1990 to 2021, KSA reported 77,513 cases of female breast cancer. The age groups with the highest number of cases are 45–49 years, followed by 40–44 years, 50–54 years, and 35–39 years. The analysis also showed fewer cases in the younger age groups, with the lowest number in the less than 20-year-old age group. From 1990 to 2021, KSA reported 19,440 deaths due to breast cancer, increasing from 201 cases in 1990 to 1,190 cases in 2021. The age-standardized incidence rate/100,000 of breast cancer increased from 15.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 11.2–21.0) in 1990 to 46.0 (95%CI 34.5–61.5) in 2021. The forecasted incidence rate of female breast cancer will be 46.5 (95%CI 45.8–46.5) in 2022 and 49.6 (95%CI 46.8–52.3) in 2026. The age-standardized death rate per 100,000 Saudi women with breast cancer increased from 6.73 (95%CI 6.73–9.03) in 1990 to 9.77 (95%CI 7.63–13.00) in 2021. The forecasted female breast cancer death rate will slightly decrease to 9.67 (95%CI 9.49–9.84) in 2022 and to 9.26 (95%CI 8.37–10.15) in 2026. DALYs increased from 229.2 (95%CI 165.7–313.6) in 1990 to 346.1 (95%CI 253.9–467.2) in 2021. The forecasted DALYs of female breast cancer will slightly decrease to 343.3 (95%CI 337.2–349.5) in 2022 reaching 332.1 (95%CI 301.2–363.1) in 2026. Conclusions Female breast cancer is still a significant public health burden that challenges the health system in KSA, current policies and interventions should be fashioned to alleviate the disease morbidity and mortality and mitigate its future burden.

Abstract Bedaquiline (BDQ), an innovative anti-tuberculous (TB) agent, has attracted attention for its potential effectiveness against drug-resistant TB. This study investigated the impact of BDQ-containing regimens on treatment success rates among multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients in Egypt. We conducted a prospective cohort study that included all adult non-pregnant patients treated in MDR-TB centers in Egypt from April 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021, with follow-up extended until December 31, 2022. The study compared patients prescribed BDQ according to national protocols with those receiving conventional treatments for MDR-TB. Treatment success rates, mortality rates, and adverse events were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, logistic regression, and Kaplan–Meier survival curves. Adjustment for potential confounders was conducted using propensity score matching and Cox-hazard regressions. A total of 84 patients were included in this study. The median age of the study participants was 39 years; 22.6% were women, 57.1% were unemployed or housewives, and 1.2% had human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Regarding the treatment regimen, 67.8% were exposed to BDQ-based treatment. Among the 55 patients (65.5%) with treatment success, a significantly higher success rate was observed in the BDQ group (73.7%) compared to the conventional group (48.1%), P = 0.042. Bisphenol A (BPA) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) are emerging contaminants of soils due to their wide presence in agricultural and industrial products. Thus, the present study aimed to integrate morpho-physiological, ionic homeostasis, and defense- and antioxidant-related genes in the response of tomato plants to BPA or PNP stress, an area of research that has been scarcely studied. In this work, increasing the levels of BPA and PNP in the soil intensified their drastic effects on the biomass and photosynthetic pigments of tomato plants. Moreover, BPA and PNP induced osmotic stress on tomato plants by reducing soluble sugars and soluble proteins relative to control. The soil contamination with BPA and PNP treatments caused a decline in the levels of macro- and micro-elements in the foliar tissues of tomatoes while simultaneously increasing the contents of non-essential micronutrients. The Fourier transform infrared analysis of the active components in tomato leaves revealed that BPA influenced the presence of certain functional groups, resulting in the absence of some functional groups, while on PNP treatment, there was a shift observed in certain functional groups compared to the control. At the molecular level, BPA and PNP induced an increase in the gene expression of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase, with the exception of POD gene expression under BPA stress. The expression of the thaumatin-like protein gene increased at the highest level of PNP and a moderate level of BPA without any significant effect of both pollutants on the expression of the tubulin (TUB) gene. The comprehensive analysis of biochemical responses in tomato plants subjected to BPA and PNP stress illustrates valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying tolerance to these pollutants.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is one of the most important diseases causing great economic losses in live animals stock industry of affected countries. It is an infectious vector borne viral illness considered one of major trans-boundary animal diseases affecting cattle and Asian domestic buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). The aim of the current review is to clarify the current status of LSD epidemiology and to throw light on the methods of LSD diagnosis, prevention, treatment and control. LSD is rarely fatal, characterised by nodules on the entire skin of the affected animals, and has a high morbidity rate. The disease has severe direct adverse effects on cattle production, milk yields and animal body condition from damage of hides, abortions, infertility and other indirect effects resulted from restriction of ani-mal movements and trade. The first recorded outbreak was in Zambia in 1929. It is considered an endemic disease in African continent. First report of LSD in Egypt was in Suez Canal governorate in 1988. Diagnosis of LSD virus depends on the highly characteristic clinical signs in severely infected cases. In mild cases the diagnosis depends on the detection and isolation of the virus on different cell lines and on chorio-allantoic membranes of embryonated chicken eggs. Viral nucleic acid detection by molecular techniques as real time PCR is considered the test of priority because it is rapid, sensi-tive and quantitative. Prevention of the disease depends mainly on vaccination programmes for the entire cattle and buffalo populations, restriction of animals’ movement inside the country and through country borders, controlling insect vectors, in addition to symptomatic treatment of infected animals.
