Search

A common approach to detecting weak signals or minute quantities involves leveraging on the localized spectral features of resonant modes, where sharper lines (i.e. high Q-factors) enhance transduction sensitivity. However, maximizing the Q-factor often introduced technical challenges in fabrication and design. In this work, we propose an alternative strategy to achieve sharper spectral features by using interference and nonlinearity, all while maintaining a constant dissipation rate. Using far-infrared thermomechanical detectors as a test case, we demonstrate that signal transduction along an engineered response curve slope effectively reduces the detector's noise equivalent power (NEP). This method, combined with an optimized absorbing layer, achieves sub-pW NEP for electrical read-out detectors operating in the sub-THz range., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Controlling the symmetry of optical and mechanical waves is pivotal to their full exploitation in technological applications and topology-linked fundamental physics experiments. Leveraging on the control of orbital angular momentum, we introduce here a device forming super-high-frequency-modulated optical vortex beams via acousto-optic interaction of light with acoustic vortices. Originated by shape-engineering of a single-contact bulk acoustic wave resonator, we generate vortices in a wide band of frequencies around 4 GHz and with frequency/geometrically tunable topological charge from 1 to 13 and beyond. With all electrical control and on-chip integration our device offers new solutions for angular-momentum-based light communication, three-dimensional particle manipulation, as well as novel interaction schemes for optomechanical devices., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Nonlocal metasurfaces are currently emerging as advanced tools for the manipulation of electromagnetic radiation, going beyond the widely explored Huygens metasurface concept. Nonetheless, the lack of an unified approach for their fast and efficient tunability still represents a serious challenge to overcome. In this article we report on gigahertz modulation of a dielectric slab-based, nonlocal (i.e. angle-dispersive) metasurface, whose operation relies on the optomechanical coupling with a mechanical wave excited piezoelectrically by a transducer integrated on the same chip. Importantly, the metasurface region is free from any conductive material, thus eliminating optical losses, and making our device of potential interest for delicate environments such as high-power apparatuses or quantum optical systems.

On-chip technology based on acoustic waves is a strong asset in modern telecommunication with the prospects of becoming a cornerstone of next-generation devices. In this context, mapping and manipulating acoustic waves through coherent scattering is pivotal for a non-trivial control of the flow of acoustic energy, which could consequently enable advanced information manipulation. To this end, here a technique for mapping acoustic fields is introduced and used for characterizing $\mu$m-sized phononic crystals defined in GaAs slabs and excited by GHz surface acoustic waves (SAWs) based on atomic force microscopy. It is shown that incoherent scattering excites a wide distribution of modes, which enables the mapping of the dispersion relation of the two-dimensional structures, while the phononic crystal symmetry directly correlates with coherent scattering effects. Enabling the use of acoustic atomic force microscopy and understanding the role of scattering are of paramount importance for the versatile use of GHz acoustic waves in technological applications, setting the baseline for advanced operations like hyperspectral filtering, beam steering or spatial-division multiplexing., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The electronic and optical properties of graphene can be precisely tuned by generating deterministic arrangements of strain features. In this paper, we report the formation of widespread and controlled buckling delamination of monolayer graphene deposited on hexagonal boron-nitride promoted by a significant squeezing of the graphene flake and induced by polymeric micro-actuators. The flexibility of this method offers a promising technique to create arbitrary buckling geometries and arrays of wrinkles which could also be subjected to iterative folding-unfolding cycles. Further development of this method could pave the way to tune the properties of several kinds of other two-dimensional materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, by tailoring their surface topography.

Metamaterials are structures engineered at a small scale with respect to the wavelength of the excitations they interact with. These structures behave as artificial materials whose properties can be chosen by design, mocking and even outperforming natural materials and making them the quintessential tool for manipulation of wave systems. In this Letter we show how the acoustic properties of a silicon nitride membrane can be affected by nanopatterning. The degree of asymmetry in the pattern geometry induces an artificial anisotropic elasticity, resulting in the splitting of otherwise degenerate mechanical modes. The artificial material we introduce has a maximum Ledbetter-Migliori anisotropy of 1.568, favorably comparing to most bulk natural crystals. With an additional freedom in defining arbitrary asymmetry axes by pattern rotation, our approach can be useful for fundamental investigation of material properties as well as for devising improved sensors of light, mass or acceleration based on micromechanical resonators.

Elusive features in photonic and electronic devices can be detected by means of advanced, time-domain spectroscopic techniques. In this letter we introduce a novel kind of modulation spectroscopy, based on the optomechanical interaction of photonic and mechanical modes. Applying the technique to a Si metasurface and its drum-like mechanical modes, we detect narrow-band quasi-Bound-State-in-the-Continuum (q-BIC) modes close to normal incidence, where their measurement can be hindered by a high symmetry protection and undesired background modes. Showing a visibility enhancement of more than one order of magnitude, the optomechanical modulation spectroscopy can be an innovative tool for precise spectroscopy of a wide set of photonic devices, including the goal of measuring purely symmetry protected BIC resonances., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Nano-electro-opto-mechanical systems enable the synergistic coexistence of electrical, mechanical, and optical signals on a chip to realize new functions. Most of the technology platforms proposed for the fabrication of these systems so far are not fully compatible with the mainstream CMOS technology, thus hindering mass-scale utilization. We have developed a CMOS technology platform for nano-electro-opto-mechanical systems that includes piezoelectric interdigitated transducers for electronic driving of mechanical signals and nanocrystalline silicon nanobeams for enhanced optomechanical interaction. Room temperature operation of devices at 2 GHz and with peak sensitivity down to 2.6 cavity phonons is demonstrated. Our proof-of-principle technology platform can be integrated and interfaced with silicon photonics, electronics, and MEMS devices and may enable multiple functions for coherent signal processing in the classical and quantum domains., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. We demonstrate a graphene-MoS2 architecture integrating multiple field-effect transistors and we independently probe and correlate the conducting properties of van der Waals coupled graphene-MoS2 contacts with the ones of the MoS2 channels. Devices are fabricated starting from high-quality single-crystal monolayers grown by chemical vapor deposition and characterized by scanning Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Transconductance curves of MoS2 are compared with the current-voltage characteristics of graphene contact stripes, revealing a significant suppression of transport on the n-side of the transconductance curve. Based on ab-initio modeling, the effect is understood in terms of trapping by sulfur vacancies, which counter-intuitively depends on the field-effect, even though the graphene contact layer is positioned between the backgate and the MoS2 channel.

Fast, room temperature imaging at THz and sub-THz frequencies is an interesting feature which could unleash the full potential of plenty applications in security, healthcare and industrial production. In this Letter we introduce micromechanical bolometers based on silicon nitride trampoline membranes as broad-range detectors, down to the sub-THz frequencies. They show, at the largest wavelengths, room-temperature noise-equivalent-powers comparable to state-of-the-art commercial devices (~100 pW Hz-1/2); adding the good operation speed and the easy, large-scale fabrication process, the trampoline membrane could be the next candidate for cheap, room temperature THz imaging and related applications., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Pseudo-magnetic field (PMF) in deformed graphene has been proposed as a promising and flexible method to quantum-confine electronic states and create gaps in the local density of states. Motivated by this perspective, we numerically analyze various different configurations leading to electronic localization and band flattening in periodically strained graphene. In particular, we highlight the existence of a fine structure in the pseudo-Landau levels confined in large-PMF regions, the emergence of states confined to PMF nodes as well as of snake-like orbits. In our paper, we further analyze the importance of the relative rotation and asymmetry of the strain lattice with respect to the atomic lattice and show how it can be used to modulate the PMF periodicity and to create localized orbits far from the strain points. Possible implementations and applications of the simulated structures are discussed.

Spontaneous locking of the phase of a coherent phonon source to an external reference is demonstrated in an optomechanical oscillator based on a self-triggered free-carrier/temperature limit cycle. Synchronization is observed when the pump laser driving the mechanical oscillator to a self-sustained state is modulated by a radiofrequency tone. We employ a pump-probe phonon detection scheme based on an independent optical cavity to observe only the mechanical oscillator dynamics. The lock range of the oscillation frequency, i.e., the Arnold tongue, is experimentally determined over a range of external reference strengths, evidencing the possibility to tune the oscillator frequency for a range up to 350 kHz. The stability of the coherent phonon source is evaluated via its phase noise, with a maximum achieved suppression of 44 dBc/Hz at 1kHz offset for a 100 MHz mechanical resonator. Introducing a weak modulation in the excitation laser reveals as a further knob to trigger, control and stabilise the dynamical solutions of self-pulsing based optomechanical oscillators, thus enhancing their potential as acoustic wave sources in a single layer silicon platform.

Actuation of thin polymeric films via electron irradiation is a promising avenue to realize devices based on strain engineered two dimensional (2D) materials. Complex strain profiles demand a deep understanding of the mechanics of the polymeric layer under electron irradiation; in this article we report a detailed investigation on electron-induced stress on poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) thin film material. After an assessment of stress values using a method based on dielectric cantilevers, we directly investigate the lateral shrinkage of PMMA patterns on epitaxial graphene, which reveals a universal behavior, independent of the electron acceleration energy. By knowing the stress-strain curve, we finally estimate an effective Young's modulus of PMMA on top of graphene which is a relevant parameter for PMMA based electron-beam lithography and strain engineering applications.

A strong trend for quantum based technologies and applications follows the avenue of combining different platforms to exploit their complementary technological and functional advantages. Micro and nano-mechanical devices are particularly suitable for hybrid integration due to the easiness of fabrication at multi-scales and their pervasive coupling with electrons and photons. Here, we report on a nanomechanical technological platform where a silicon chip is combined with an aluminum nitride layer. Exploiting the AlN piezoelectricity, Surface Acoustic Waves are injected in the Si layer where the material has been localy patterned and etched to form a suspended nanostring. Characterizing the nanostring vertical displacement induced by the SAW, we found an external excitation peak efficiency in excess of 500 pm/V at 1 GHz mechanical frequency. Exploiting the long term expertise in silicon photonic and electronic devices as well as the SAW robustness and versatility, our technological platform represents a strong candidate for hybrid quantum systems.

Microelectromechanical systems and integrated photonics provide the basis for many reliable and compact circuit elements in modern communication systems. Electro-opto-mechanical devices are currently one of the leading approaches to realize ultra-sensitive, low-loss transducers for an emerging quantum information technology. Here we present an on-chip microwave frequency converter based on a planar aluminum on silicon nitride platform that is compatible with slot-mode coupled photonic crystal cavities. We show efficient frequency conversion between two propagating microwave modes mediated by the radiation pressure interaction with a metalized dielectric nanobeam oscillator. We achieve bidirectional coherent conversion with a total device efficiency of up to ~ 60 %, a dynamic range of $2\times10^9$ photons/s and an instantaneous bandwidth of up to 1.7 kHz. A high fidelity quantum state transfer would be possible if the drive dependent output noise of currently $\sim14$ photons$\ \cdot\ $s$^{-1}\ \cdot\ $Hz$^{-1}$ is further reduced. Such a silicon nitride based transducer is in-situ reconfigurable and could be used for on-chip classical and quantum signal routing and filtering, both for microwave and hybrid microwave-optical applications., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

The resonant enhancement of mechanical and optical interaction in optomechanical cavities enables their use as extremely sensitive displacement and force detectors. In this work we demonstrate a hybrid magnetometer that exploits the coupling between the resonant excitation of spin waves in a ferromagnetic insulator and the resonant excitation of the breathing mechanical modes of a glass microsphere deposited on top. The interaction is mediated by magnetostriction in the ferromagnetic material and the consequent mechanical driving of the microsphere. The magnetometer response thus relies on the spectral overlap between the ferromagnetic resonance and the mechanical modes of the sphere, leading to a peak sensitivity better than 900 pT Hz$^{-1/2}$ at 206 MHz when the overlap is maximized. By externally tuning the ferromagnetic resonance frequency with a static magnetic field we demonstrate sensitivity values at resonance around a few nT Hz$^{-1/2}$ up to the GHz range. Our results show that our hybrid system can be used to build high-speed sensor of oscillating magnetic fields.

Photonic band structures are a typical fingerprint of periodic optical structures, and are usually observed in spectroscopic quantities such as transmission, reflection and absorption. Here we show that also the chiro-optical response of a metasurface constituted by a lattice of non-centrosymmetric, L-shaped holes in a dielectric slab shows a band structure, where intrinsic and extrinsic chirality effects are clearly recognized and connected to localized and delocalized resonances. Superchiral near-fields can be excited in correspondence to these resonances, and anomalous behaviors as a function of the incidence polarization occur. Moreover, we introduce a singular value decomposition (SVD) approach to show that the above mentioned effects are connected to specific fingerprints of the SVD spectra. Finally, we demonstrate by means of an inverse design technique that the metasurface based on an L-shaped hole array is a minimal one. Indeed, its unit cell geometry depends on the smallest number of parameters needed to implement arbitrary transmission matrices compliant with the general symmetries for 2d-chiral structures. These observations enable more powerful wave operations in a lossless photonic environment.

The effectiveness of self-mixing interferometry has been demonstrated across the electromagnetic spectrum, from visible to microwave frequencies, in a plethora of sensing applications, ranging from distance measurement to material analysis, microscopy and coherent imaging. Owing to their intrinsic stability to optical feedback, quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) represent a source that offers unique and versatile characteristics to further improve the self-mixing functionality at mid infrared and terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we show the feasibility of detecting with nanometer precision deeply subwalength (< {\lambda}/6000) mechanical vibrations of a suspended Si3N4-membrane used as the external element of a THz QCL feedback interferometric apparatus. Besides representing a platform for the characterization of small displacements, our self-mixing configuration can be exploited for the realization of optomechanical systems, where several laser sources can be linked together through a common mechanical microresonator actuated by radiation pressure., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The control of the local strain profile in 2D materials offers an invaluable tool for tailoring the electronic and photonic properties of solid-state devices. In this paper, we demonstrate a local engineering of the exciton photoluminescence (PL) energy of monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) by means of strain. We apply a local uniaxial stress to WS2 by exploiting electron-beam patterned and actuated polymeric micrometric artificial muscles (MAMs), which we implement onto monolithic synthetic WS2/graphene heterostructures. We show that MAMs are able to induce an in-plane stress to the top WS2 layer of the van der Waals heterostructure and that the latter can slide on the graphene underneath with negligible friction. As a proof of concept for the local strain-induced PL shift experiments, we exploit a two-MAM configuration in order to apply uniaxial tensile stress on well-defined micrometric regions of WS2. Remarkably, our architecture does not require the adoption of fragile suspended microstructures. We observe a spatial modulation of the excitonic PL energy of the WS2 monolayers under stress, which agrees with the expected strain profile and attains a maximum redshift of about 40 meV at the maximum strain intensity point. After the actuation, a time-dependent PL blueshift is observed in agreement with the viscoelastic properties of the polymeric MAMs. Our approach enables inducing local and arbitrary deformation profiles and circumvents some key limitations and technical challenges of alternative strain engineering methods requiring the 2D material transfer and production of suspended membranes., Comment: This article may be downloaded for personal use only. The synchronization of coupled oscillators is a phenomenon found throughout nature. Mechanical oscillators are paradigmatic among such systems, but realising them at the nanoscale is challenging. We report synchronization of the mechanical dynamics of a pair of optomechanical crystal cavities that are intercoupled with a mechanical link and support independent optical modes. In this regime they oscillate in anti-phase, which is in agreement with the predictions of our numerical model that considers reactive coupling. Finally, we show how to temporarily disable synchronization of the coupled system by actuating one of the cavities with a heating laser, so that both cavities oscillate independently. Our results can be upscaled to more than two cavities and are thus the first step towards realizing integrated networks of synchronized optomechanical oscillators. Electromagnetic fields coupled with mechanical degrees of freedom have recently shown exceptional and innovative applications, ultimately leading to mesoscopic optomechanical devices operating in the quantum regime of motion. Simultaneously, micromechanical elements have provided new ways to enhance and manipulate the optical properties of passive photonic elements. Following this concept, in this article we show how combining a chiral metasurface with a GaAs suspended micromembrane can offer new scenarios for controlling the polarization state of near-infrared light beams. Starting from the uncommon properties of chiral metasurface to statically realize target polarization states and circular and linear dichroism, we report mechanically induced, ~300 kHz polarization modulation, which favorably compares, in terms of speed, with liquid-crystals commercial devices. Moreover, we demonstrate how the mechanical resonance can be non-trivially affected by the input light polarization (and chiral state) via a thermoelastic effect triggered by intracavity photons. This work inaugurates the field of Polarization Optomechanics, which could pave the way to fast polarimetric devices, polarization modulators and dynamically tunable chiral state generators and detectors, as well as giving access to new form of polarization nonlinearities and control.

The control of strain in two-dimensional materials opens exciting perspectives for the engineering of their electronic properties. While this expectation has been validated by artificial-lattice studies, it remains elusive in the case of atomic lattices. Remarkable results were obtained on nanobubbles and nano-wrinkles, or using scanning probes; microscale strain devices were implemented exploiting deformable substrates or external loads. These devices lack, however, the flexibility required to fully control and investigate arbitrary strain profiles. Here, we demonstrate a novel approach making it possible to induce strain in graphene using polymeric micrometric artificial muscles (MAMs) that contract in a controllable and reversible way under an electronic stimulus. Our method exploits the mechanical response of poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) to electron-beam irradiation. Inhomogeneous anisotropic strain and out-of-plane deformation are demonstrated and studied by Raman, scanning-electron and atomic-force microscopy. These can all be easily combined with the present device architecture. The flexibility of the present method opens new opportunities for the investigation of strain and nanomechanics in two-dimensional materials.

We use micro-Raman spectroscopy to study strain profiles in graphene monolayers suspended over SiN membranes micropatterned with holes of non-circular geometry. We show that a uniform differential pressure load $\Delta P$ over elliptical regions of free-standing graphene yields measurable deviations from hydrostatic strain conventionally observed in radially-symmetric microbubbles. The top hydrostatic strain $\bar{\varepsilon}$ we observe is estimated to be $\approx0.7\%$ for $\Delta P = 1\,{\rm bar}$ in graphene clamped to elliptical SiN holes with axis $40$ and $20\,{\rm \mu m}$. In the same configuration, we report a $G_\pm$ splitting of $10\,{\rm cm^{-1}}$ which is in good agreement with the calculated anisotropy $\Delta\varepsilon \approx 0.6\%$ for our device geometry. Our results are consistent with the most recent reports on the Gr\"uneisen parameters. We have developed terahertz frequency quantum cascade lasers that exploit a double-periodicity distributed feedback grating to control the emission frequency and the output beam direction independently. The spatial refractive index modulation of the gratings necessary to provide optical feedback at a fixed frequency and, simultaneously, a far-field emission pattern centered at controlled angles, was designed through use of an appropriate wavevector scattering model. Single mode THz emission at angles tuned by design between 0{\deg} and 50{\deg} was realized, leading to an original phase-matching approach, lithographically independent, for highly collimated THz QCLs.

We demonstrate the use of a compound optical cavity as linear displacement detector, by measuring the thermal motion of a silicon nitride suspended membrane acting as the external mirror of a near-infrared Littrow laser diode. Fluctuations in the laser optical power induced by the membrane vibrations are collected by a photodiode integrated within the laser, and then measured with a spectrum analyzer. The dynamics of the membrane driven by a piezoelectric actuator is investigated as a function of air pressure and actuator displacement in a homodyne configuration. The high Q-factor ($\sim 3.4\cdot 10^4$ at $8.3 \cdot 10^{-3}$ mbar) of the fundamental mechanical mode at $\sim 73$ kHz guarantees a detection sensitivity high enough for direct measurement of thermal motion at room temperature ($\sim 87$ pm RMS). The compound cavity system here introduced can be employed as a table-top, cost-effective linear displacement detector for cavity optomechanics. Furthermore, thanks to the strong optical nonlinearities of the laser compound cavity, these systems open new perspectives in the study of non-Markovian quantum properties at the mesoscale.

We present a platform based upon silicon nitride nanomembranes for integrating superconducting microwave circuits with planar acoustic and optical devices such as phononic and photonic crystals. Utilizing tensile stress and lithographic patterning of a silicon nitride nanomembrane we are able to reliably realize planar capacitors with vacuum gap sizes down to $s \approx 80$nm. In combination with spiral inductor coils of micron pitch, this yields microwave ($\approx 8$GHz) resonant circuits of high impedance ($Z_{0} \approx 3.4$k$\Omega$) suitable for efficient electromechanical coupling to nanoscale acoustic structures. We measure an electromechanical vacuum coupling rate of $g_{0}/2\pi = 41.5$~Hz to the low frequency ($4.48$MHz) global beam motion of a patterned phononic crystal nanobeam, and through parametric microwave driving reach a backaction cooled mechanical mode occupancy as low as $n_{m} = 0.58$., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

This work reports the dynamical thermal behavior of lasing microspheres placed on a dielectric substrate while they are homogeneously heated-up by the top-pump laser used to excite the active medium. The lasing modes are collected in the far-field and their temporal spectral traces show characteristic lifetimes of about 2 ms. The latter values scale with the microsphere radius and are independent of the pump power in the studied range. Finite-Element Method simulations reproduce the experimental results, revealing that the thermal dynamics is dominated by the heat dissipated towards the substrate through the medium surrounding the contact point. The characteristic system scale regarding thermal transport is of few hundreds of nanometers, thus enabling an effective toy model for investigating heat conduction in non-continuum gaseous media and near-field radiative energy transfer., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We fabricate and characterize a microscale silicon electro-opto-mechanical system whose mechanical motion is coupled capacitively to an electrical circuit and optically via radiation pressure to a photonic crystal cavity. To achieve large electromechanical interaction strength, we implement an inverse shadow mask fabrication scheme which obtains capacitor gaps as small as 30 nm while maintaining a silicon surface quality necessary for minimizing optical loss. Using the sensitive optical read-out of the photonic crystal cavity, we characterize the linear and nonlinear capacitive coupling to the fundamental 63 MHz in-plane flexural motion of the structure, showing that the large electromechanical coupling in such devices may be suitable for realizing efficient microwave-to-optical signal conversion., Comment: 8 papers, 4 figures

Optical forces can set tiny objects into states of coherent mechanical oscillation, also known as mechanical or phonon lasing. We present a novel pumping mechanism in an opto-mechanical photonic crystal that realizes mechanical lasing with relaxed requirements for the optical-mechanical modes and their inter-coupling. It derives from a spontaneously triggered thermal/free carrier self-pulsing and the anharmonic modulation of the radiation pressure force that comes as a consequence. Moreover, the feedback of the mechanics on the self-pulsing frequency-entrains both oscillators, creating a self-stabilized indecomposable system. A manifold of frequency-entrained regions with two different mechanical modes (at 54 and 122 MHz) are observed as a result of the wide tuneability of the natural frequency of the self-pulsing. The system operates at ambient conditions of pressure and temperature in a silicon compatible platform, which enables its exploitation in sensing, intra-chip metrology or time-keeping applications., Comment: 23 pages including supplementary material

We report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of the optical coupling between a microdisk resonator and a waveguide laying on different planes. While the lateral coupling between a planar resonator and a waveguide is characterized by a unique distance at which the resonant waveguide transmission vanishes because of destructive interference, the vertical coupling geometry exhibits an oscillatory behavior in the coupling amplitude as a function of the vertical gap. This effect manifests experimentally as oscillations in both the waveguide transmission and the mode quality factor. An analytical description based on coupled-mode theory and a two-port beam-splitter model of the waveguide-resonator coupling is developed, which compares successfully both to experimental data and numerical simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Owing to their ability to confine electromagnetic energy in ultrasmall dielectric volumes, micro-disk, ring and toroid resonators hold interest for both specific applications and fundamental investigations. Generally, contributions from various loss channels within these devices lead to limited spectral windows (Q-bands) where highest mode Q-factors manifest. Here we describe a strategy for tuning Q-bands using a new class of micro-resonators, named micro-kylix resonators, in which engineered stress within an initially flat disk results in either concave or convex devices. To shift the Q-band by 60nm towards short wavelengths in flat micro-disks a 50% diameter reduction is required, which causes severe radiative losses suppressing Q's. With a micro-kylix, we achieve similar tuning and even higher Q's by two orders of magnitude smaller diameter modification (0.4%). The phenomenon relies on geometry-induced smart interplay between modified dispersions of material absorption and radiative loss-related Q-factors. We report on visible light emission from Si-nanocrystal based optically active microdisk resonators. The room temperature photoluminescence (PL) from single microdisks shows the characteristic modal structure of whispering-gallery modes. The emission is both TE and TM-polarized in 300 nm thick microdisks, while thinner ones (135 nm) support only TE-like modes. Thinner disks have the advantage to filter out higher order radial mode families, allowing for measuring only the most intense first order modal structure. We reveal subnanometer linewidths and corresponding quality factors as high as 2800, limited by the spectral resolution of the experimental setup. Moreover,we observe a modification of mode linewidth by a factor 13 as a function of pump power.
