1. Characterization of Conventional Endovascular Devices in Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

Abstract

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) are often repaired through an Endovascular approach known as EVAR. The success and duration of these challenging procedures are primarily attributable to the accuracy and reliability of navigating corresponding interventional devices. This study investigates the performance of conventional non-steerable and steerable catheters in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) procedures, focusing on two primary metrics: reachable workspace and gate cannulation success. We developed two abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) phantoms using patient CT images for our experiments. Under X-ray fluoroscopy guidance, the reachable workspace was quantified, and gate cannulation success rates, cannulation time, and fluoroscopy times were recorded for both non-steerable and steerable catheters and were compared. We were unable to observe statistically significant differences between the two catheter types in overall cannulation success rates or fluoroscopy time. However, in challenging anatomical scenarios (particularly a more challenging gate location), the steerable catheter showed statistically significant advantages in success rates and cannulation times. While there were no statistical differences in reachable workspace between non-steerable and steerable catheters when considering the whole aneurysm, segmented analysis showed that the steerable catheter performed better in the central region, and non-steerable catheters performed better in the peripheral region. This study provides a systematic method for quantifying the performance of endovascular devices. The findings suggest that while steerable catheters may offer advantages in complex anatomical conditions, non-steerable catheters are preferable in peripheral areas of the aneurysm. These insights can inform catheter selection in EVAR, potentially influencing device design and clinical practice.

2. SideEye: A Side-Looking Catheter for Fenestrated Endovascular Aneurysm Repair Procedures

Abstract

Fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair remains a technically challenging procedure in the presence of complex anatomy, as it increases the difficulty of target vessel cannulation and prolongs procedure time and fluoroscopy radiation exposure. This paper aims to design, develop, and assess a novel steerable catheter, the SideEye, and compare its performance with conventional catheters in a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm phantom model. Users were asked to perform target vessel cannulation under fluoroscopic guidance using the SideEye and conventional non-steerable and steerable catheters. The experiment was divided into two cases based on the stent graft orientation (aligned and misaligned). Total procedure times, individual target vessel cannulation times, and exposure times were analyzed and compared in each case. In the misaligned case, the average cannulation times of all target vessels were $703 \pm 274$ s using the non-steerable catheter, $517 \pm 309$ s using the steerable catheter, and $199 \pm 91.0$ s using the SideEye. The average exposure times were $12 \pm 4.6$ min using the non-steerable catheter, $8.6 \pm 4.1$ min using the steerable catheter, and $3.0 \pm 1.1$ min using the SideEye. Target vessel cannulation using the SideEye significantly reduced procedure time and overall exposure time, compared to conventional devices.

Abstract

Gyrokinetic tokamak plasmas can exhibit intrinsic toroidal rotation driven by the residual stress. While most studies have attributed the residual stress to the parallel-momentum flux from the turbulent $\boldsymbol{E}\times\boldsymbol{B}$ motion, the parallel-momentum flux from the drift-orbit motion (denoted $\Pi_\parallel^D$) and the $\boldsymbol{E}\times\boldsymbol{B}$-momentum flux from the $\boldsymbol{E}\times\boldsymbol{B}$ motion (denoted $\Pi_{E\times B}$) are often neglected. Here, we use the global total-$f$ gyrokinetic code XGC to study the residual stress in the core and the edge of a DIII-D H-mode plasma. Numerical results show that both $\Pi_\parallel^D$ and $\Pi_{E\times B}$ make up a significant portion of the residual stress. In particular, $\Pi_\parallel^D$ in the core is higher than the collisional neoclassical level in the presence of turbulence, while in the edge it represents an outflux of counter-current momentum even without turbulence. Using a recently developed ``orbit-flux'' formulation, we show that the higher-than-neoclassical-level $\Pi_\parallel^D$ in the core is driven by turbulence, while the outflux of counter-current momentum from the edge is mainly due to collisional ion orbit loss. These results suggest that $\Pi_\parallel^D$ and $\Pi_{E\times B}$ can be important for the study of intrinsic toroidal rotation.

Abstract

PurposeChronic inflammation is integral to myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) pathogenesis. JAK inhibitors reduce cytokine levels, but not without significant side effects. Nutrition is a low-risk approach to reduce inflammation and ameliorate symptoms in MPN. We performed a randomized, parallel-arm study to determine the feasibility of an education-focused Mediterranean diet intervention among patients with MPN.Experimental designWe randomly assigned patients with MPN to either a Mediterranean diet or standard U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans (USDA). Groups received equal but separate education with registered dietician counseling and written dietary resources. Patients were prospectively followed for feasibility, adherence, and symptom burden assessments. Biological samples were collected at four timepoints during the 15-week study to explore changes in inflammatory biomarkers and gut microbiome.ResultsThe Mediterranean diet was as easy to follow for patients with MPN as the standard USDA diet. Approximately 80% of the patients in the Mediterranean diet group achieved a Mediterranean Diet Adherence Score of ≥8 throughout the entire active intervention period, whereas less than 50% of the USDA group achieved a score of ≥8 at any timepoint. Improvement in symptom burden was observed in both diet groups. No significant changes were observed in inflammatory cytokines. The diversity and composition of the gut microbiome remained stable throughout the duration of the intervention.ConclusionsWith dietician counseling and written education, patients with MPN can adhere to a Mediterranean eating pattern. Diet interventions may be further developed as a component of MPN care, and potentially incorporated into the management of other hematologic conditions.SignificanceDiet is a central tenant of management of chronic conditions characterized by subclinical inflammation, such as cardiovascular disease, but has not entered the treatment algorithm for clonal hematologic disorders. Here, we establish that a Mediterranean diet intervention is feasible in the MPN patient population and can improve symptom burden. These findings warrant large dietary interventions in patients with hematologic disorders to test the impact of diet on clinical outcomes.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an increasingly recognized cause of acute coronary syndromes. Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is an idiopathic, nonatherosclerotic, and noninflammatory arterial disease that affects small- to medium-sized arteries that can result in multifocal aneurysms, stenosis, tortuosity, and dissections. Extracoronary FMD has been identified in approximately 70% of SCAD patients and it is recommended that all SCAD patients undergo screening for FMD once in their lifetime using computed tomography angiography from head to pelvis. This focused review for cardiologists outlines current approaches to diagnosis and management of patients with FMD. Résumé: La dissection spontanée de l’artère coronaire (DSAC) est une cause de plus en plus reconnue du syndrome coronarien aigu. La dysplasie fibromusculaire (DFM) est une maladie idiopathique, non athéroscléreuse et non inflammatoire qui affecte les petites et moyennes artères et peut entraîner des anévrismes multifocaux, une sténose, une tortuosité et des dissections. Une DFM extracoronarienne a été observée chez environ 70 % des patients présentant une DSAC. Il est recommandé que tous les patients présentant une DSAC devraient une fois dans leur vie subir un test de dépistage de la DFM au moyen d’une angiographie par tomodensitométrie de la tête au bassin. Abstract

The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm recently became a popular method to compute quantum chemical properties of molecules on noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices. In order to avoid noise accumulation from the NISQ device in the circuit, it is important to keep the so-called quantum depth of the circuit at a minimum, defined as the minimum number of quantum gates that need to be operated sequentially. In the present work, we introduce a modular 2-qubit cluster circuit that allows for the design of a shallow-depth quantum circuit compared to previously proposed architectures without loss of chemical accuracy. Moreover, by virtue of the simplicity of the cluster circuit, it is possible to assign a valence bond chemical interpretation to the cluster circuit. The article is framed by an introduction and conclusion contextualising the issues raised in relation to a selection of prior contributions to "Music Education Research" and comparing approaches to music literacy and theory teaching as represented in recent music theory conferences in the UK and the United States.

14. Effects of collisional ion orbit loss on tokamak radial electric field and toroidal rotation in an L-mode plasma

Abstract

Ion orbit loss has been used to model the formation of a strong negative radial electric field $E_r$ in the tokamak edge, as well as edge momentum transport and toroidal rotation. To quantitatively measure ion orbit loss, an orbit-flux formulation has been developed and numerically applied to the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code XGC. We study collisional ion orbit loss in an axisymmetric DIII-D L-mode plasma using gyrokinetic ions and drift-kinetic electrons. Numerical simulations, where the plasma density and temperature profiles are maintained through neutral ionization and heating, show the formation of a quasisteady negative $E_r$ in the edge. We have measured a radially outgoing ion gyrocenter flux due to collisional scattering of ions into the loss orbits, which is balanced by the radially incoming ion gyrocenter flux from confined orbits on the collisional time scale. This suggests that collisional ion orbit loss can shift $E_r$ in the negative direction compared to that in plasmas without orbit loss. It is also found that collisional ion orbit loss can contribute to a radially outgoing (counter-current) toroidal-angular-momentum flux, which is not balanced by the toroidal-angular-momentum flux carried by ions on the confined orbits. Therefore, the edge toroidal rotation shifts in the co-current direction on the collisional time scale.

17. Developing a fit-for-purpose composite symptom score as a symptom burden endpoint for clinical trials in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma

Abstract

Abstract We developed a composite symptom score (CSS) representing disease-related symptom burden over time in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Longitudinal data were collected from an open-label Phase IIB study in which 239 patients completed the validated MD Anderson Symptom Inventory for MPM (MDASI-MPM). A blinded, independent review committee of external patient-reported outcomes experts advised on MDASI-MPM symptoms to include in the CSS. Through iterative analyses of potential symptom-item combinations, 5 MPM symptoms (pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, coughing) were selected. The CSS correlated strongly with the full MDASI-MPM symptom set (0.92–0.94) and the Lung Cancer Symptom Scale-Mesothelioma (0.79–0.87) at each co-administration of the scales. The CSS also had good sensitivity to worsening disease and global quality-of-life ratings. The MDASI-MPM CSS can be used as an outcome in MPM clinical trials, including in responder analyses and at the individual patient level. It is brief enough to administer frequently, including electronically, to better capture symptom trajectories during and after a trial and in clinical practice. As a single score, the CSS addresses multiplicity issues that can arise when several symptoms increase due to worsening disease. Our process can be adapted to produce a CSS for other advanced-cancer trials.

Abstract

Summary: Early phase clinical trials provide an initial evaluation of therapies’ risks and benefits to patients, including safety and tolerability, which typically relies on reporting outcomes by investigator and laboratory assessments. Use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to inform risks (tolerability) and benefits (improvement in disease symptoms) is more common in later than early phase trials. We convened a two-day expert roundtable covering: (1) the necessity and feasibility of a universal PRO core conceptual model for early phase trials; (2) the practical integration of PROs in early phase trials to inform tolerability assessment, guide dose decisions, or as real-time safety alerts to enhance investigator-reported adverse events. Participants (n = 22) included: patient advocates, regulators, clinicians, statisticians, pharmaceutical representatives, and PRO methodologists working across diverse clinical areas. In this manuscript, we report major recommendations resulting from the roundtable discussions corresponding to each theme. Additionally, we highlight priority areas necessitating further investigation.

Abstract

The Liberal government of Canada, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, suffers from persistently low approval ratings that are worsening over time. Trudeau must call the next federal election by October 2025 at the latest, and if current trends continue, it appears he is headed for defeat. The Conservative Party of Canada, led by Pierre Poilievre, has surged in polls over the past year and is well positioned to win the next federal election. Foreign observers may therefore be interested to know the state of conservative politics in Canada and what this party stands for. Unlike so many other center-right parties throughout the Western world, Canada's Conservative Party has not been torn apart by populist-nationalist pressures over the past decade. But this is not because Canada is immune to populism or nationalism. Rather, it is because those forces express themselves differently north of the border. The modern Conservative, or Tory, Party's base lies in western Canada, a region periodically subject to waves of populist discontent. This discontent has long been aimed at the traditional political establishment located around the great urban centers of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Liberal Party dominates those Laurentian centers and is commonly viewed as Canada's natural ruling party, going back generations. As a result, western populists and 'small c' conservatives make common cause against Liberal federal dominance. One threat to this informal alliance is when Tory leaders pay insufficient attention to the interests or concerns of western populists. This is exactly what occurred during the early 1990s, when the Progressive Conservatives, as they were then known, lost western rural support to the upstart Reform Party. Tories were then confined to opposition for over a decade. Only when these two parties successfully merged, some 20 years ago under the leadership of Stephen Harper, were the Tories able to recapture power at the federal level. Ever since that time, Canada's Conservative Party leaders have tended to their base while attempting to reach beyond it. And on matters of great controversy inside other center-right parties worldwide, Tory voters and Tory leaders have remained largely aligned. On issues such as immigration, entitlement spending, free trade, and foreign policy, Canada's Conservatives have not split apart or radically changed direction. Again, this is not because Tories are necessarily more liberal or less populist than other center-right parties in leading democracies. Rather, it is because nationally specific conditions have not lent themselves to any great intra-conservative divide during recent years. Nationalism is a more powerful force in Canadian politics than most Americans realize. This may be because Canadian nationalism is quietly directed against the United States. The Dominion of Canada was built to resist US annexation. English Canadian Tory Loyalists forged their national identity on ties to Britain rather than America. Beginning in the late 1960s, that older form of Canadian nationalism was replaced by a new one. The Liberals under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau encouraged a new sense of Canada's national identity, linked to progressive values at home and implemented through constitutional, socioeconomic, and administrative reforms. The sense of America as counterpoint remained, but the center of gravity for anti-US resistance shifted from right to left. This all creates delicate foreign policy challenges for Canada's next Conservative prime minister. Most Canadian citizens expect their leaders to maintain a certain dignified sense of national independence, especially when vital national interests are at risk. At the same time, given international conditions, the case for better coordination with the United States and other leading allies over a wide range of security and economic issues is strong. A prudent Tory government would embrace a bold vision of enhanced continental defense with the US, encompassing trade relations, ballistic missile defenses, Arctic security, counter-narcotics efforts, maritime safeguards, North American energy independence, military spending increases, counterterrorism, and border security related to illegal migration. A prudent American president would do the same. This report begins by surveying the current strengths, weaknesses, and historical bases of Canada's leading political parties. It also examines the issue of Quebec nationalism. I describe in some detail the lineage of various forms of conservatism in Canada. This includes a description of how Canadian conservatives have avoided being torn apart in the current era of populist-nationalist upheaval--and how they now look to capture a majority in Parliament, region by region. I offer specific foreign policy recommendations for better US-Canada relations. And I suggest that Canada's Tories are best understood as that nation's 'Country Party,' even while the Liberals have long since taken up the role of 'Court Party.' 30. Effects of collisional ion orbit loss on neoclassical tokamak radial electric fields

Abstract

Ion orbit loss is considered important for generating the radially inward electric field $E_r$ in a tokamak edge plasma. In particular, this effect is emphasized in diverted tokamaks with a magnetic X point. In neoclassical equilibria, Coulomb collisions can scatter ions onto loss orbits and generate a radially outward current, which in steady state is balanced by the radially inward current from viscosity. To quantitatively measure this loss-orbit current in an edge pedestal, an ion-orbit-flux diagnostic has been implemented in the axisymmetric version of the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code XGC. As the first application of this diagnostic, a neoclassical DIII-D H-mode plasma is studied using gyrokinetic ions and adiabatic electrons. The validity of the diagnostic is demonstrated by studying the collisional relaxation of $E_r$ in the core. After this demonstration, the loss-orbit current is numerically measured in the edge pedestal in quasisteady state. In this plasma, it is found that the radial electric force on ions from $E_r$ approximately balances the ion radial pressure gradient in the edge pedestal, with the radial force from the plasma flow term being a minor component. The effect of orbit loss on $E_r$ is found to be only mild. How ion orbit loss will affect $E_r$ in the full-current ITER plasma pedestal is left as a subsequent study topic.

Abstract

The current paper investigated underlying mechanisms that produce culture and gender differences in social anxiety. European-Canadian (n = 99; 47% female) and Asian-Canadian (n = 94; 54% female) undergraduate students completed questionnaires measuring levels of independence, interdependence, masculinity, femininity, and social anxiety. Asian Canadians reported a similar level of social anxiety to European Canadians, and females reported higher social anxiety than males. Mediational analyses revealed that levels of independence, interdependence, and masculinity mediated the association between culture and social anxiety, whereas levels of masculinity mediated the association between gender and social anxiety. Cultural differences in social anxiety are explained by the extent to which individuals define themselves as independent and interdependent, while gender differences in social anxiety are explained by the extent to which individuals identify themselves with a masculine gender role. Our findings suggest the orthogonal impact of culture and gender on individuals' social anxiety. Implications and limitations of the findings are discussed., Author(s): Kristen E. 37. The digital transformation of marketer identities in figured worlds

Abstract

The digital transformation of marketing has been ongoing for more than three decades but the breadth and depth of change in the last five years has been unprecedented. We know from extensive research on identities in organisations that change in work practices can prompt identity work, yet there has been relatively little prior research about marketer identities. Moreover, there has been even less research about marketer identities relating to digital transformation. This thesis addresses these gaps; however, it does so by looking at the intersection of marketer identities and digital transformation via a Pragmatist reading of Holland et al.'s (1998) concept of Figured Worlds, a social practice theory of identity with roots in Vygotsky, Bakhtin, Mead, and Bourdieu. This approach enabled the study of processes of transformation in relation to the various artefacts which make up figured worlds, such as vocabularies, practices, and materialities which come together to construct understandings about 'how things work' or what is considered 'normal' by the people who inhabit them. The main body of the thesis centres on an ethnographically-oriented case study of the marketing department of a large Canadian NGO (Canango) in the process of shifting from a traditional 'NGO helper' culture to a so-called 'Agile marketing' culture based on project management practices originating in software development that have been growing in popularity among practitioners. The thesis identifies a number of 'classes' of marketer identities: managerially supplied ; technologically afforded ; socially afforded ; emergent ; and, performed along with what each type enables one to do. Using ideas from Figured Worlds theory and multimodal discourse analysis, a heuristic framework is then developed made of the elements ' matter ' (phenomena), ' meaning ', mediators , ' me ' (identity) and ' motion ' (action) to study how these identities are used to accomplish contextual goals. This framework is then applied to study the way that three people variously appropriated or resisted a particular supplied identity: the 'Agile organiser'. Finally the ideas developed through the first three phases of the thesis are applied in a final phase in which Canango begins using a new digital collaborative work platform. The study looks at the identity implications of this move, evidencing the ways in which the work platform serves as a 'bridge' between worlds and how such bridges may be used to change worlds and make new ones.

The Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE) provides insight for capturing treatment tolerability within trials. Tolerability summary measures, such as the maximum score, are often used to communicate the potential negative symptoms both in the medical literature and directly to patients. Commonly, the proportions of present and severe symptomatic adverse events are used and reported between treatment arms among adverse event types. The toxicity index is also a summary measure previously applied to clinician-reported CTCAE data.ObjectivesApply the toxicity index to PRO-CTCAE data from the COMET-2 trial alongside the maximum score, then present and discuss considerations for using the toxicity index as a summary measure for communicating tolerability to patients and clinicians.MethodsProportions of maximum PRO-CTCAE severity levels and median toxicity index were computed by arm using all trial data and adjusting for baseline symptoms.ResultsGroup-wise statistical differences were similar whether using severity level proportions or the toxicity index. The impact of adjusting for baseline symptoms was equivalently seen when comparing arms using severity rates or the toxicity index.ConclusionThe toxicity index is a useful method when ranking patients from those with the least to most symptomatic adverse event burden. This study showed the toxicity index can be applied to PRO-CTCAE data. Though as a tolerability summary measure, further study is needed to provide a clear clinical or patient-facing interpretation of the toxicity index.

Abstract

PURPOSE: Palbociclib is a cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitor approved for advanced breast cancer. In the adjuvant setting, the potential value of adding palbociclib to endocrine therapy for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer has not been confirmed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the prospective, randomized, phase III PALLAS trial, patients with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative early breast cancer were randomly assigned to receive 2 years of palbociclib (125 mg orally once daily, days 1-21 of a 28-day cycle) with adjuvant endocrine therapy or adjuvant endocrine therapy alone (for at least 5 years). The primary end point of the study was invasive disease-free survival (iDFS); secondary end points were invasive breast cancer-free survival, distant recurrence-free survival, locoregional cancer-free survival, and overall survival. RESULTS: Among 5,796 patients enrolled at 406 centers in 21 countries worldwide over 3 years, 5,761 were included in the intention-to-treat population. At the final protocol-defined analysis, at a median follow-up of 31 months, iDFS events occurred in 253 of 2,884 (8.8%) patients who received palbociclib plus endocrine therapy and in 263 of 2,877 (9.1%) patients who received endocrine therapy alone, with similar results between the two treatment groups (iDFS at 4 years: 84.2% v 84.5%; hazard ratio, 0.96; CI, 0.81 to 1.14; P = .65). No significant differences were observed for secondary time-to-event end points, and subgroup analyses did not show any differences by subgroup. There were no new safety signals for palbociclib in this trial. CONCLUSION: At this final analysis of the PALLAS trial, the addition of adjuvant palbociclib to standard endocrine therapy did not improve outcomes over endocrine therapy alone in patients with early hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

40. Pre-Service Teachers' Reflections on Personal Responsibility for Student Motivation: A Video Vignette Study

Abstract

Teachers assume personal responsibility in four domains: student motivation, student achievement, relationships with students, and the quality of their own teaching. In all existing research, pre-service and practicing teachers score lowest in the motivation domain. This may be because some teachers view motivation as a shared responsibility or one that is contingent on external factors. Thus, the purpose of this research was to examine pre-service teachers' reflections on two different perspectives on personal responsibility for student motivation - one that reflected high internal unmitigated responsibility and one that reflected shared and contextualized responsibility. Pre-service teachers watched two video vignettes, and then reflected on the perspectives in an open-ended written format. The descriptive statistics confirmed that responsibility for motivation was the lowest of the four domains. Moreover, the percentage pre-service teacher felt responsible for student motivation predicted which video vignette they selected. Thematic analysis of pre-service teachers' reflection revealed four themes that give insight to how pre-service teachers make sense of responsibility for student motivation: people responsible, external factors, strategies to support motivation, and emotions. The results are discussed in light of methodological, theoretical, and practical implications.

Abstract

Let $G$ be a connected graph and $u,v$ and $w$ vertices of $G$. Then $w$ is said to {\em strongly resolve} $u$ and $v$, if there is either a shortest $u$-$w$ path that contains $v$ or a shortest $v$-$w$ path that contains $u$. A set $W$ of vertices of $G$ is a {\em strong resolving set} if every pair of vertices of $G$ is strongly resolved by some vertex of $W$. A smallest strong resolving set of a graph is called a {\em strong basis} and its cardinality, denoted $\beta_s(G)$, the {\em strong dimension} of $G$. The {\em threshold strong dimension} of a graph $G$, denoted $\tau_s(G)$, is the smallest strong dimension among all graphs having $G$ as spanning subgraph. A graph whose strong dimension equals its threshold strong dimension is called $\beta_s$-{\em irreducible}. In this paper we establish a geometric characterization for the threshold strong dimension of a graph $G$ that is expressed in terms of the smallest number of paths (each of sufficiently large order) whose strong product admits a certain type of embedding of $G$. We demonstrate that the threshold strong dimension of a graph is not equal to the previously studied threshold dimension of a graph. Graphs with strong dimension $1$ and $2$ are necessarily $\beta_s$-irreducible. It is well-known that the only graphs with strong dimension $1$ are the paths. We completely describe graphs with strong dimension $2$ in terms of the strong resolving graphs introduced by Oellermann and Peters-Fransen. We obtain sharp upper bounds for the threshold strong dimension of general graphs and determine exact values for this invariant for certain subclasses of trees., Comment: 25 pages

Abstract

Previous limiter-biasing experiments on the Texas Helimak, a simple magnetized torus, have been inconclusive on the effect of flow shear on turbulence levels. To investigate this, the first gyrokinetic simulations of limiter biasing in the Helimak using the plasma physics code Gkeyll have been carried out, and results are presented here. For the scenarios considered, turbulence is mostly driven by the interchange instability, which depends on gradients of equilibrium density profiles. An analysis of both experimental and simulation data demonstrates that shear rates are mostly less than than local linear growth rates, and not all requirements for shear stabilization are met. Rather, the mostly vertical shear flow has an important effect on bulk transport and experimental equilibrium density profiles, and changes to the gradients correspond to changes in turbulence levels.
