Since cosmic shear was first observed in 2000, it has become a key cosmological probe and promises to deliver exquisite dark energy constraints. However, shear is inferred from coherent distortions of galaxy shapes, and the relation between galaxy ellipticities and gravitational shear is a serious potential source of bias. To address this, we are developing a shear estimation method that makes no assumption on galaxy shapes, in order to avoid the shortcomings of a simulation-based shear calibration. Our method relies on the estimation of second moments on the image, and the evaluation of how second moments respond to a shear applied to the coordinate system, without altering the image itself, at variance with the Metacalibration method. We also evaluate analytically the noise bias due to the non-linearity of the estimator, and confront it with the bias derived from noisy image simulations, which allows a fast and precise noise bias correction.

The first systematic experimental study of the neutron-rich Br isotopes with two complementary state-of-the-art techniques is presented. These isotopes have been populated in the fission process at two different facilities, GANIL and ILL. New spectroscopic information has been obtained for odd-even $^{87-93}$Br isotopes and the experimental results have been compared with state-of-the-art Large-Scale Shell-Model and DNO Shell-Model calculations. As a result of such theoretical approaches, a transition from prolate ($^{87,89}$Br) to oblate ($^{91,93}$Br) shapes is obtained from the subtle balance between proton and neutron quadrupole deformations, as a clear signature of pseudo-SU3 quadrupole regime., Comment: 17 pages, 24 figures, 5 tables

PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is the ESA M3 space mission dedicated to detect and characterise transiting exoplanets including information from the asteroseismic properties of their stellar hosts. The uninterrupted and high-precision photometry provided by space-borne instruments such as PLATO require long preparatory phases. An exhaustive list of tests are paramount to design a mission that meets the performance requirements, and as such, simulations are an indispensable tool in the mission preparation. To accommodate PLATO's need of versatile simulations prior to mission launch - that at the same time describe accurately the innovative but complex multi-telescope design - we here present the end-to-end PLATO simulator specifically developed for the purpose, namely PlatoSim. We show step-by-step the algorithms embedded into the software architecture of PlatoSim that allow the user to simulate photometric time series of CCD images and light curves in accordance to the expected observations of PLATO. In the context of the PLATO payload, a general formalism of modelling, end-to-end, incoming photons from the sky to the final measurement in digital units is discussed. We show the strong predictive power of PlatoSim through its diverse applicability and contribution to numerous working groups within the PLATO Mission Consortium. This involves the on-going mechanical integration and alignment, performance studies of the payload, the pipeline development and assessments of the scientific goals. PlatoSim is a state-of-the-art simulator that is able to produce the expected photometric observations of PLATO to a high level of accuracy. We demonstrate that PlatoSim is a key software tool for the PLATO mission in the preparatory phases until mission launch and prospectively beyond., Comment: 30 pages, 22 figures

The brighter-fatter effect affects all CCD sensors to various degrees. Deep-depleted thick sensors are seriously affected and the measurement of galaxy shapes for cosmic shear measurements requires an accurate correction of the effect in science images. We describe the whole correction chain we have implemented for the CCDs of the Hyper Suprime-Cam imager on the Subaru Telescope. We derive non linearity corrections from a new sequence of flat field images, and measure their statistics, namely their two-pixel function. We constrain an electrostatic model from flat field statistics that we use to correct science images. We find evidence that some fraction of the observed variance and some covariances is not due to the combination of Poisson statistics and electrostatics -- and the cause remains elusive. We then have to ignore some measurements when deriving the electrostatic model. Over a wide range of image qualities and in the 5 bands of the imager, stars in corrected science images exhibit size variations with flux small enough to predict the point spread function for faint objects to an accuracy better than $10^{-3}$ for the trace of second moments -- and even better for the ellipticity and the fourth radial moment. We prove Pfister's local-global principle for hermitian forms over Azumaya algebras with involution over semilocal rings, and show in particular that the Witt group of nonsingular hermitian forms is $2$-primary torsion. Our proof relies on a hermitian version of Sylvester's law of inertia, which is obtained from an investigation of the connections between a pairing of hermitian forms extensively studied by Garrel, signatures of hermitian forms, and positive semidefinite quadratic forms., Comment: 37 pages. The structure of $^{83}$As, $^{85}$As and $^{87}$As have been studied in fusion-fission reaction $^{238}$U+$^9$Be. Fission fragments were identified in mass and atomic number using the VAMOS++ spectrometer and the coincident $\gamma$-rays were detected in the $\gamma$-ray tracking array AGATA. New transitions in $^{83}$As and $^{85}$As are reported and placed in the level schemes. A level scheme of the excited states in $^{87}$As is proposed for the first time. The data are interpreted in frame of Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations, SU3 symmetries and Beyond Mean-Field frameworks. A spherical regime at magic number $N$=50 is predicted and the location of the proton $g_{9/2}$ orbital is proposed for the first time. Development of collectivity in a prolate deformed, $\gamma$-soft regime in the open shell cases $^{85}$As and $^{87}$As, most neutron-rich isotopes beyond $N$=50, is concluded. Data and theoretical calculations give confidence to a relatively high extrapolated excitation energy about 4 MeV of the $9/2^+$ state in $^{79}$Cu, one proton above $^{78}$Ni.

Scope: To study the effect of variation in dietary vitamin A (VA) content on its hepatic and intestinal metabolism. Methods and results: Adult female and male rats were fed with diets containing 400, 2300, or 9858 IU/kg VA for 31-33 weeks. VA concentrations were measured in plasma and liver. Bioavailability and intestinal conversion efficiency of $\beta$-carotene to VA were assessed by measuring postprandial plasma $\beta$-carotene and retinyl palmitate concentrations after force-feeding rats with $\beta$-carotene. Expression of genes involved in VA metabolism, together with concentrations of RBP4, BCO1 and SR-BI proteins, were measured in the intestine and liver of female rats. Plasma retinol concentrations were lower and hepatic free retinol concentrations were higher in females than in males. There was no effect of dietary VA content on $\beta$-carotene bioavailability and its conversion efficiency, but bioavailability was higher and conversion efficiency was lower in females than in males. The expression of most genes exhibited a U-shaped dose response curve depending on VA intake. Main conclusions: $\beta$-Carotene bioavailability and conversion efficiency to VA are affected by the sex of rats. Results of gene expression suggest a hormetic regulation of VA metabolism in female rats.

In [4] we developed the theory of positive cones on finite-dimensional simple algebras with involution, inspired by the classical Artin-Schreier theory of orderings on fields, and based on the notion of signatures of hermitian forms [1]. In a subsequent paper [3], we developed the associated "valuation theory", based on Tignol-Wadsworth gauges [7, 8, 9]. In this short note, we present the following two additional results: (1) Whereas positive cones on fields correspond to total order relations, positive cones on algebras with involution only give rise to partial order relations. We show that the order relation defined by a positive cone is as close to total as possible, cf. Theorem 2.5. (2) Positive cones are maximal prepositive cones, which begs the question if there are prepositive cones that are not maximal. We answer this question in the affirmative in Section 3, using techniques that illustrate the interplay between positive cones and gauges., Comment: Section 3 contains an error that invalidates the example. We think this particular example cannot be made to work at all

In order to allow for a comparison with the measurements from other antenna systems, the voltage power spectral density measured by the Radio and Plasma waves receiver (RPW) on board Solar Orbiter needs to be converted into physical quantities that depend on the intrinsic properties of the radiation itself.The main goal of this study is to perform a calibration of the RPW dipole antenna system that allows for the conversion of the voltage power spectral density measured at the receiver's input into the incoming flux density. We used space observations from the Thermal Noise Receiver (TNR) and the High Frequency Receiver (HFR) to perform the calibration of the RPW dipole antenna system. Observations of type III bursts by the Wind spacecraft are used to obtain a reference radio flux density for cross-calibrating the RPW dipole antennas. The analysis of a large sample of HFR observations (over about ten months), carried out jointly with an analysis of TNR-HFR data and prior to the antennas' deployment, allowed us to estimate the reference system noise of the TNR-HFR receivers. We obtained the effective length of the RPW dipoles and the reference system noise of TNR-HFR in space, where the antennas and pre-amplifiers are embedded in the solar wind plasma. The obtained $l_{eff}$ values are in agreement with the simulation and measurements performed on the ground. By investigating the radio flux intensities of 35 type III bursts simultaneously observed by Solar Orbiter and Wind, we found that while the scaling of the decay time as a function of the frequency is the same for the Waves and RPW instruments, their median values are higher for the former. This provides the first observational evidence that Type III radio waves still undergo density scattering, even when they propagate from the source, in a medium with a plasma frequency that is well below their own emission frequency.

The electromagnetic character of the $\Delta I=1$ transitions connecting the one- to zero-phonon and the two- to one-phonon wobbling bands should be dominated by an $E2$ component, due to the collective motion of the entire nuclear charge. In the present work it is shown, based on combined angular correlation and linear polarization measurements, that the mixing ratios of all analyzed connecting transitions between low-lying bands in $^{135}$Pr interpreted as zero-, one-, and two-phonon wobbling bands, have absolute values smaller than one. This indicates predominant $M1$ magnetic character, which is incompatible with the proposed wobbling nature. All experimental observables are instead in good agreement with quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations, which describe the bands as resulting from a rapid re-alignment of the total angular momentum from the short to the intermediate nuclear axis.

We study astrometric residuals from a simultaneous fit of Hyper Suprime-Cam images. We aim to characterize these residuals and study the extent to which they are dominated by atmospheric contributions for bright sources. We use Gaussian process interpolation, with a correlation function (kernel), measured from the data, to smooth and correct the observed astrometric residual field. We find that Gaussian process interpolation with a von K\'arm\'an kernel allows us to reduce the covariances of astrometric residuals for nearby sources by about one order of magnitude, from 30 mas$^2$ to 3 mas$^2$ at angular scales of ~1 arcmin, and to halve the r.m.s. residuals. Those reductions using Gaussian process interpolation are similar to recent result published with the Dark Energy Survey dataset. We are then able to detect the small static astrometric residuals due to the Hyper Suprime-Cam sensors effects. We discuss how the Gaussian process interpolation of astrometric residuals impacts galaxy shape measurements, in particular in the context of cosmic shear analyses at the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

Two new bands have been identified in $^{137}$Nd from a high-statistics JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment. Constrained density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations are used to assign configurations and investigate the band properties, which are well described and understood. It is demonstrated that these two new bands can be interpreted as chiral partners of previously known three-quasiparticle positive- and negative-parity bands. The newly observed chiral doublet bands in $^{137}$Nd represent an important support to the existence of multiple chiral bands in nuclei. The present results constitute the missing stone in the series of Nd nuclei showing multiple chiral bands, which becomes the most extended sequence of nuclei presenting multiple chiral bands in the Segr\'e chart.

Understanding how efforts to limit exposure to COVID-19 have altered electricity demand provides insights not only into how dramatic restrictions shape electricity demand but also about future electricity use in a post-COVID-19 world. We develop a unified modeling framework to quantify and compare electricity usage changes in 58 countries and regions around the world from January-May 2020. We find that daily electricity demand declined as much as 10% in April 2020 compared to modelled demand, controlling for weather, seasonal and temporal effects, but with significant variation. Clustering techniques show that four impact groups capture systematic differences in timing and depth of electricity usage changes, ranging from a mild decline of 2% to an extreme decline of 26%. These groupings do not align with geography, with almost every continent having at least one country or region that experienced a dramatic reduction in demand and one that did not. Instead, we find that such changes relate to government restrictions and mobility. Government restrictions have a non-linear effect on demand that generally saturates at its most restrictive levels and sustains even as restrictions ease. Mobility offers a sharper focus on electricity demand change with workplace and residential mobility strongly linked to demand changes at the daily level. Steep declines in electricity usage are associated with workday hourly load patterns that resemble pre-COVID weekend usage. Quantifying these impacts is a crucial first step in understanding the impacts of crises like the pandemic and the associated societal response on electricity demand.

Type Ia Supernovae have yet again the opportunity to revolutionize the field of cosmology as the new generation of surveys are acquiring thousands of nearby SNeIa opening a new era in cosmology: the direct measurement of the growth of structure parametrized by $fD$. This method is based on the SNeIa peculiar velocities derived from the residual to the Hubble law as direct tracers of the full gravitational potential caused by large scale structure. With this technique, we could probe not only the properties of dark energy, but also the laws of gravity. In this paper we present the analytical framework and forecasts. We show that ZTF and LSST will be able to reach 5\% precision on $fD$ by 2027. Our analysis is not significantly sensitive to photo-typing, but known selection functions and spectroscopic redshifts are mandatory. We finally introduce an idea of a dedicated spectrograph that would get all the required information in addition to boost the efficiency to each SNeIa so that we could reach the 5\% precision within the first two years of LSST operation and the few percent level by the end of the survey., Comment: White paper CNRS/IN2P3 Prospectives 2020

One new pair of positive-parity chiral doublet bands have been identified in the odd-$A$ nucleus $^{135}$Nd which together with the previously reported negative-parity chiral doublet bands constitute a third case of multiple chiral doublet (M$\chi$D) bands in the $A\approx130$ mass region. The properties of the M$\chi$D bands are well reproduced by constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. The newly observed M$\chi$D bands in $^{135}$Nd represents an important milestone in supporting the existence of M$\chi$D in nuclei.

The Photon Transfer Curve (PTC) of a CCD depicts the variance of uniform images as a function of their average. It is now well established that the variance is not proportional to the average, as Poisson statistics would indicate, but rather flattens out at high flux. This "variance deficit", related to the brighter-fatter effect, feeds correlations between nearby pixels, that increase with flux, and decay with distance. We propose an analytical expression for the PTC shape, and for the dependence of correlations with intensity, and relate both to some more basic quantities related to the electrostatics of the sensor, that are commonly used to correct science images for the brighter-fatter effect. We derive electrostatic constraints from a large set of flat field images acquired with a CCD e2v 250, and eventually question the generally-admitted assumption that boundaries of CCD pixels shift by amounts proportional to the source charges. Our results show that the departure of flat field statistics from Poisson law is entirely compatible with charge redistribution during the drift in the sensor., Comment: 16 pages. Several new bands have been identified in 130Ba, among which there is one with band-head spin 8+. Its properties are in agreement with the Fermi-aligned \nu h11/2^2 , 7/2+[523] \otimes 9/2-[514] Nilsson configuration. This is the first observation of a two-quasiparticle t-band in the A=130 mass region. The t-band is fed by a dipole band involving two additional h11/2 protons. The odd-spin partners of the proton and neutron S-bands and the ground-state band at high spins are also newly identified. The observed bands are discussed using several theoretical models, which strongly suggest the coexistence of prolate and oblate shapes polarized by rotation aligned two-proton and two-neutron configurations, as well as prolate collective rotations around axes with different orientations. With the new results, 130Ba presents one of the best and most complete sets of collective excitations that a gamma-soft nucleus can manifest at medium and high spins, revealing a diversity of shapes and rotations for the nuclei in the A = 130 mass region., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures
