Salicylic acid (SA) is widely used in food storage, preservatives, additives, healthcare, and the pharmaceutical industry. However, various poisoning symptoms are frequently reported upon ingestion of a large amount of SA. Therefore, discovering new tools for sensing SA with fast, simple, and portable performance is imperative. Herein, five rhodamine-based fluorescent sensors were constructed, and investigated their SA detection profiles. Probe 1 was excellent selective with a rapid response, highly sensitive (LOD = 2.5 μM), good interference resistance, and unaided eye recognition. The spray experiment and paper-based test strips indicating that probe 1 enables to the on-site and quantitatively detect SA on actual food surfaces by using a smartphone identifying the RGB values. The sensing performance was validated in soil samples, water, and various agricultural food samples. Overall, the constructed SA sensor can function as a promising, convenient, and affordable tool for point-of-care detection of SA in diversiform environmental samples.

Abstract The bottom-up molecular science research paradigm has greatly propelled the advancement of materials science. However, some organic molecules can exhibit markedly different properties upon aggregation. Understanding the emergence of these properties and structure-property relationship has become a new research hotspot. In this work, by taking the unique closed-form rhodamines-based aggregation-induced emission (AIE) system as model compounds, we investigated their luminescent properties and the underlying mechanism deeply from a top-down viewpoint. Interestingly, the closed-form rhodamine-based AIE system did not display the expected emission behavior under high-viscosity or low-temperature conditions. Alternatively, we finally found that the molecular conformation change upon aggregation induced intramolecular charge transfer emission and played a significant role for the AIE phenomenon of these closed-form rhodamine derivatives. The application of these closed-form rhodamine-based AIE probe in food spoilage detection was also explored.

Cytokine storms are an important mechanism of sepsis. TNF-α is an important cytokine. As a regulator of TNF superfamily receptors, RIPK1 not only serves as the basis of the scaffold structure in complex I to promote the activation of the NF-κB and MAPK pathways but also represents an important protein in complex II to promote programmed cell death. Ubiquitination of RIPK1 is an important regulatory function that determines the activation of cellular inflammatory pathways or the activation of death pathways. In this paper, we introduce the regulation of RIPK1, RIPK1 PANoptosome’s role in Inflammatory and sepsis, and perspectives.

Background: The incidence and mortality of sepsis are increasing year by year, and there is still a lack of specific biomarkers to predict its prognosis. Prognostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in predicting the severity and mortality of sepsis has been gradually discovered.Methods: Literature was searched through Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) and Cochrane Library databases in March 2022. Observational studies, evaluating the impact of VEGF in sepsis outcomes (mortality and severity) are included in this meta-analysis. Risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Sensitivity and publication bias analyses were also assessed. Meta-regression analysis were performed to identify the potential sources of heterogeneity.Result: A total of 1,574 articles were retrieved from the systematic literature search. We included 20 studies for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Deceased and critically ill patients had higher baseline VEGF levels than survivors and non-severe patients. The pooled sensitivity and specificity for VEGF predicts sepsis mortality were 0.79and 0.76, respectively. the area under the SROC curve was 0.83.Conclusion: High VEGF are associated with poor clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with sepsis. The behavior and controlling factors of natural gas adsorption in the Jurassic continental shale in the northeastern Sichuan Basin are studied based on the organic geochemical features, mineral compositions and pore structure parameters through a series of experiments on samples from the shale. Results show that the total gas content of the shale measured on-site is 0.1–5.3 cm3/g, with an average of 0.7 cm3/g. The methane isothermal adsorption curves show a trend of increasing first and then decreasing, indicating an obvious excessive adsorption. The shale has a maximum adsorption capacity (VL) of 0.44–3.59 cm3/g, with an average of 1.64 cm3/g, lower than that of marine shale in the same basin. The organic matter content and pore structure characteristics are identified as the two main factors controlling the adsorption capacity of the shale. Micropores in the shale are the main storage space for gas to be adsorbed. Due to well developed shell laminae and interlayers in the shale, calcite plays a more important role than clay minerals in affecting the adsorption of gas to the rock. The formation temperature and water content also significantly inhibit the gas adsorption to the shale. Compared with marine shale in the basin, the Jurassic continental shale is more heterogeneous and lower in TOC values. Furthermore, with a more widely developed clayey shale lithofacies and shell limy shale lithofacies as well as relatively less developed organic pores and micropores, the continental shale is inferior to marine shale in terms of gas adsorption capacity.

Abstract Although tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) improve the prognosis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients, resistance to TKIs and residual leukemia stem cells (LSCs) inevitably become the bottleneck of cure. Therefore, we need to explore novel treatment strategies based on conventional treatment strategies. Our previous study found that CML cell senescence may be one of the main factors to achieve clinical cure of CML. Studies have shown that lipid metabolism plays a key role in cellular senescence. Here, we found that long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase 1 (ACSL1) was significantly up-regulated in senescent CML cells. Furthermore, we demonstrated that overexpression of ACSL1 induces senescence and inhibits cell growth in K562 cells by altering cell cycle progression, and enhances the proliferation-inhibiting effect of imatinib. Overexpression of ACSL1 enhances imatinib-induced tumorigenic decline in K562 cells in vivo. Knockdown of ACSL1 reverses imatinib-induced senescence in K562 cells. Mechanistically, overexpression of ACSL1 induced senescence in K562 cells via the SIRT1/p53/p21 axis. Collectively, our study showed that ACSL1 promotes imatinib-induced K562 cells senescence and tumor growth by regulating SIRT1/p53/p21 pathway. The ACSL1/SIRT1/p53 signal axis is a novel mechanism of cell senescence in CML and a new potential target for eradication of CML LSCs.

Abstract Background The social network of the core members of elderly care service social organizations could affect the performance of the organization, while studies concerning its related factors are limited. We aimed to explore factors that are associated with the social network of core members from elderly care service social organizations and provide references and suggestions for improving elderly care services. Methods This cross-sectional study employed a multi-stage stratified sampling method, and collected data concerning social network, demographic information and occupation. Univariate analysis and binary logistic regression were used to analyze factors that could affect the social network of the core members. Results Our results demonstrated that there is low social network of core members of elderly care social organizations. Out of the total membership, men (AOR = 1.708; 95%CI: 1.034–2.823), those with senior high school education (AOR = 1.923; 95%CI: 1.053–3.511), those with a college degree and above (AOR = 3.010; 95%CI: 1.591–5.692) and those that receive awards related to elderly care services (AOR = 2.260; 95%CI: 1.285–3.976) were associated with higher social network scores. Conclusions Our data successfully characterized the social status of core members of elderly care organizations. Therefore, health care professionals and policy makers in social organizations should use this knowledge in the care and service provision to the elderly; and implement actions that would promote networking in social organizations.

Vitamin D3 (VD3), an essential nutrient for animals, has been demonstrated to stimulate the uptake of certain amino acids. However, the role of VD3 in the intestine, the primary site for digestion and absorption of nutrients, remains poorly characterized. Here, the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) was studied to assess the influence of different doses of VD3 (15.2, 364.3, 782.5, 1,167.9, 1,573.8, and 1,980.1 IU/kg) on growth performance, intestinal morphology, digestive absorption, amino acid transport, and potential signaling molecule levels in a feeding experiment. As a result, dietary VD3 improved growth performance, intestinal structure, and digestive and brush border enzyme activities. Additionally, most intestinal free amino acids and their transporters were upregulated after VD3 intake, except for Ala, Lys, Asp, Leu, solute carrier (SLC) 7A7, SLC1A5, and SLC1A3 mRNA in different segments, Leu and SLC6A14 mRNA in the proximal intestine, and SLC7A5 mRNA in the mid and distal intestine. In the crucial target of rapamycin (TOR) signal pathway of amino acid transport, the gene and protein expression of TOR, S6 kinase 1, and activating transcription factor 4 were elevated, whereas 4E-binding protein 1 was decreased, further suggesting an advanced amino acid absorption capacity in the fish due to VD3 supplementation. Based on percentage weight gain, feed efficiency, and trypsin activity, the VD3 requirements of on-growing grass carp were estimated to be 968.33, 1,005.00, and 1,166.67 IU/kg, respectively. Our findings provide novel recommendations for VD3 supplementation to promote digestion and absorption capacities of fish, contributing to the overall productivity of aquaculture.

Abstract Background Demoralization is a psychological response that is frequently observed in patients with cancer or advanced diseases. It is affected by national characteristics, culture, disease characteristics and general conditions of the patient such as individual cultural features, nature of stress, personal expression preferences and social behavior. Compared with the results of previous studies on demoralization syndrome, patients with cancer in Taiwan exhibit a higher prevalence of demoralization. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of high demoralization and the changes in the level of demoralization in cancer patients during radiotherapy to explore the associated factors and the contributing factors to the high level of demoralization. Methods We used the Demoralization Scale-Mandarin Version to evaluate the demoralization level at six-time points in patients admitted for radiotherapy in a 3-month observational period. 101 patients allocated to three groups by cancer region completed the study. We applied the generalized estimating equation (GEE) to analyze the changes in the demoralization level among the three groups. The variables associated with the changes in the demoralization level were also investigated. Results In the analysis using univariate GEE, only patients in the chest and breast group exhibited significant changes at two different time points. The results obtained using multivariate GEE revealed that sociodemographic variables, stage of disease and use of surgery or chemotherapy had no impact on the changes in demoralization across three months. Conclusion The demoralization level certainly fluctuated in an extremely high range. The higher prevalence of demoralized patients may indicate that if medical staff neglect the importance of demoralization, demoralized patients with cancer may not receive appropriate care.

Abstract Background Nutrient regulation has been proven to be an effective way to improve the flesh quality in fish. As a necessary nutrient for fish growth, protein accounts for the highest proportion in the fish diet and is expensive. Although our team found that the effect of protein on the muscle hardness of grass carp was probably related to an increased collagen content, the mechanism for this effect has not been deeply explored. Moreover, few studies have explored the protein requirements of sub-adult grass crap (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Therefore, the effects of different dietary protein levels on the growth performance, nutritional value, muscle hardness, muscle fiber growth, collagen metabolism and related molecule expression in grass carp were investigated. Methods A total of 450 healthy grass carp (721.16 ± 1.98 g) were selected and assigned randomly to six experimental groups with three replicates each (n = 25/replicate), and were fed six diets with 15.91%, 19.39%, 22.10%, 25.59%, 28.53% and 31.42% protein for 60 d. Results Appropriate levels of dietary protein increased the feed intake, percentage weight gain, specific growth rate, body composition, unsaturated fatty acid content in muscle, partial free amino acid content in muscle, and muscle hardness of grass carp. These protein levels also increased the muscle fiber density, the frequency of new muscle fibers, the contents of collagen and IGF-1, and the enzyme activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylases and lysyloxidase, and decreased the activity of matrix metalloproteinase-2. At the molecular level, the optimal dietary protein increased collagen type I α1 (Colα1), Colα2, PI3K, Akt, S6K1, La ribonucleoprotein domain family member 6a (LARP6a), TGF-β1, Smad2, Smad4, Smad3, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2, MyoD, Myf5, MyoG and MyHC relative mRNA levels. The levels of the myostatin-1 and myostatin-2 genes were downregulated, and the protein expression levels of p-Smad2, Smad2, Smad4, p-Akt, Akt, LARP6 and Smad3 were increased. Conclusions The appropriate levels of dietary protein promoted the growth of sub-adult grass carp and improved muscle hardness by promoting the growth of muscle fibers, improving collagen synthesis and depressing collagen degradation. In addition, the dietary protein requirements of sub-adult grass carp were 26.21% and 24.85% according to the quadratic regression analysis of growth performance (SGR) and the muscle hardness (collagen content), respectively.

The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is an important insect pest of cotton crops worldwide. The objectives of this study were to determine the acute toxicity of afidopyropen and whether there are any effects of sublethal concentrations of afidopyropen on the biological characteristics of A. gossypii. The results showed that afidopyropen possesses high acute toxicity to adult A. gossypii with a 72 h LC50 value of 1.062 mg L–1. A sublethal concentration (LC10) of afidopyropen significantly decreased adult longevity, fecundity and oviposition days of female adults in both F0 and F1 generations. The total pre-adult survival of F1 progeny was also significantly reduced by 30% at the LC10 of afidopyropen. In addition, the nymph developmental time, pre-adult period, adult pre-reproductive period (APRP), and total pre-reproductive period (TPRP) of the F1 progeny were significantly prolonged compared with the control. Several population parameters, including the net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r) and finite rate of increase (λ) of F1 progeny were significantly decreased by a sublethal afidopyropen concentration exposure. These results indicated that sublethal concentration of afidopyropen can significantly suppress A. gossypii population growth. It would be useful for assessing the overall effects of afidopyropen on A. gossypii.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: A nosocomial salmonellosis outbreak caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Goldcoast occurred in a respiratory care ward (RCW) of a hospital in central Taiwan between December 24, 2020, and January 21, 2021. Ten isolates recovered from 10 RCW residents were resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins. The resistance mechanism needs to be investigated. Methods: Whole-genome sequencing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were conducted to determine the genetic resistance determinants and the phenotypic resistance in the isolates. Results: Each of the 10 outbreak isolates harbored an IncHI2 plasmid that carried 15 antimicrobial resistance genes aac(3)-IId, aadA22, aph(3’)-Ia, aph(6)-Id, arr-2, blaCTX-M-55, blaLAP-2, blaTEM-1, dfrA14, floR, lnu(F), qnrS13, sul2, sul3, tet(A), an efflux pump regulatory gene ramAp and an IncL plasmid carried a blaOXA-48. The outbreak strains were expected to be resistant to numerous antimicrobials, including aminoglycosides, b-lactams /inhibitors, tetracycline, rifamycin, lincosamide, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, phenicols, fluoroquinolones, and carbapenems. Two outbreak isolates displayed higher minimum inhibitory concentrations than the other eight isolates to cefmetazole and carbapenems, which was linked to a deficiency of a major facilitator superfamily transporter in the two isolates. Conclusion: The carbapenem-resistant outbreak strains could have been derived from extensively drug-resistant S. enterica Goldcoast strains, which have been a major pathogen in Taiwan since 2018, through the acquisition of a blaOXA-48-carrying plasmid. Special efforts are needed in Taiwan to monitor the spread of extremely resistant strains.

Abstract Background Pneumonia is a common complication of influenza and closely related to mortality in influenza patients. The present study examines cytokines as predictors of the prognosis of influenza-associated pneumonia. Methods This study included 101 inpatients with influenza (64 pneumonia and 37 non-pneumonia patients). 48 cytokines were detected in the serum samples of the patients and the clinical characteristics were analyzed. The correlation between them was analyzed to identify predictive biomarkers for the prognosis of influenza-associated pneumonia. Results Seventeen patients had poor prognosis and developed pneumonia. Among patients with influenza-associated pneumonia, the levels of 8 cytokines were significantly higher in those who had a poor prognosis: interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-γ (IFN-γ), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), monocyte colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-3, Interleukin-2 receptor subunit alpha and Hepatocyte growth factor. Correlation analysis showed that the IL-6, G-CSF, M-CSF, IFN-γ, and MCP-1 levels had positive correlations with the severity of pneumonia. IL-6 and G-CSF showed a strong and positive correlation with poor prognosis in influenza-associated pneumonia patients. The combined effect of the two cytokines resulted in the largest area (0.926) under the receiver-operating characteristic curve. Conclusion The results indicate that the probability of poor prognosis in influenza patients with pneumonia is significantly increased. IL-6, G-CSF, M-CSF, IFN-γ, and MCP-1 levels had a positive correlation with the severity of pneumonia. Importantly, IL-6 and G-CSF were identified as significant predictors of the severity of influenza-associated pneumonia.

Background: Social support, which is a crucial external resource for cancer patients, was demonstrated to be a positive predictor of learned helplessness (LH). But it is far from clear whether and how social support decreases the LH in cancer patients. The purpose of present study is to detect the association between social support and LH and the role of individual resilience and selfefficacy in mediating this relationship. Methods: The convenience sampling method was utilized. From August 2022 to February 2024, a total of 537 lung cancer patients (Mage = 60.25 years, SDage = 9.85 years) from five tertiary hospitals in one municipalities (Chongqing), and two provinces (Sichuan and Yunnan) were recruited, among which 389 were males and 148 were females. LH, social support, individual resilience, and self-efficacy were assessed by using standard scales. A structural equation model was constructed employing AMOS 23.0 to examine the interrelationships among social support, individual resilience, self-efficacy, and LH of lung cancer patients. Results: A total of 537 lung cancer patients were finally included. Social support, individual resilience, and self-efficacy were positively related to LH (r = -0.299 to -0.451, p < 0.01). The mediation model revealed that the direct effect of social support on LH was significant (ß = -0.407, p < 0.001). Besides, social support could also affect LH through three pathways: (1) the mediating effect of individual resilience (ß = -0.075, p < 0.001); (2) the mediating effect of self-efficacy (ß = -0.060, p < 0.05); (3) the chain mediating effect of individual resilience and self-efficacy (ß = -0.011, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate that social support alleviates lung cancer patients' LH, and that individual resilience and self-efficacy mediate the correlation between social support and LH. Besides providing adequate social support, intervention strategies built on individual resilience and self-efficacy should be applied to reduce LH in lung cancer patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lung cancer is a malignant tumor with the highest incidence and mortality in China, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plays a unique advantage in the treatment and rehabilitation of lung cancer. In order to standardize TCM diagnosis and treatment and disease management of clinical medical workers, the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine issued the “Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer by Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine” in August 2021. Experts' recommendations were made on the clinical staging and syndrome differentiation and classification of lung cancer, characteristic TCM therapies, and nursing care of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. This article interpreted the Consensus on the above aspects from a nursing perspective, hoping to provide references for clinical medical workers in the treatment and nursing care of lung cancer.

Objective: The objective of this study is to explore the current situation, clinical research hot spots, and trends of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) nursing technology in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), to draw a panorama of clinical research, to provide the basis and clues for subsequent high-level evidence integration and further in-depth research. Materials and Methods: Seven databases including China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP), Wanfang Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (Sino-Med), PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched. The bibliometric method and visualization software CiteSpace were used to conduct a multi-dimensional analysis of the included literature. Results: A total of 805 pieces of literature were included (of them, one was written in German and four in English), and the number of published literature showed an increasing trend year by year. There were only 30 (3.73%) pieces of literature published in nursing journals. The hot spots of the co-occurrence map were concentrated in: (1) the nursing of fumigation in RA; (2) the efficacy evaluation of TCM nursing technology on pain, joint malformation, and joint dysfunction caused by RA. The included literature themes focused on five TCM technologies: fumigation, moxibustion, acupoint patching, acupoint injection, and Chinese herbal soaking. The beginning year and strength in TCM fumigation were 2012 and 5.2, and those in moxibustion were 2011 and 3.38. Conclusion: The related studies are on the rise. It has entered the field of international readers with clear research hot spots. However, there are still shortcomings such as little literature published in Chinese nursing core journals, few non-Chinese-related documents, and a lack of international exchanges and cooperation. The current research hot spots in this field are TCM fumigation, and the cutting-edge trend of future research may be fumigation and moxibustion technology. It is suggested that further research can focus on evidence integration and original research on the self-optimization of these two techniques.

Core body temperature (CBT) is increasingly attracting attention as crucial data during target temperature management (TTM). Accurate and continuous measurement of human CBT can effectively identify and monitor central high fever, and provide a basis for the effective implementation during TTM, which is therefore of great significance for human health care and disease monitoring. The reliable core measurement sites are nasopharynx, esophagus, bladder, rectum, pulmonary artery, etc., but the measurement methods in these sites are all invasive. At present, the medical field is more inclined to noninvasive data collection methods through monitoring an appropriate site (such as forehead, mouth, or axilla) depending on clinical circumstances, so as to ensure the comfort and security of patients to the greatest extent. This review will provide reference choosing more safe and accurate temperature measurement methods for patients during TTM by reviewing the sites and accuracy of invasive and noninvasive CBT measurements.

We studied the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the amount of nutrients, flavour substances, and healthcare fatty acids, the physicochemical properties, and the potential molecular mechanisms in the muscles of sub-adult grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). In recent years, mannose oligosaccharide (MOS) as a functional additive is widely used in aquaculture, to enhance fish immunity. An evaluation of the effect of dietary MOS supplementation on the immune barrier function and related signaling molecules mechanism of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) was undertaken in the present study. Six diets with graded amounts of MOS supplementation (0, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 mg/kg) were fed to 540 grass carp over 60 days. To examine the immune response and potential mechanisms of MOS supplementation on the intestine, a challenge test was conducted using injections of Aeromonas hydrophila for 14 days. Results of the study on the optimal supplementation with MOS were found as follows (1) MOS enhances immunity partly related to increasing antibacterial substances content and antimicrobial peptides expression; (2) MOS attenuates inflammatory response partly related to regulating the dynamic balance of intestinal inflammatory cytokines; (3) MOS regulates immune barrier function may partly be related to modulating TLRs/MyD88/NFκB and TOR/S6K1/4EBP signalling pathways. Finally, the current study concluded that MOS supplementation could improve fish intestinal immune barrier function under Aeromonas hydrophila infected conditions.

Abstract Background Chimeric antigen receptor T‐cell (CAR‐T) therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) has thus far been elusive, in part due to target restriction and phenotypic heterogeneity of AML cells. Mutations of the FMS‐like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) and DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) genes are common driver mutations that present with a poor prognosis in AML patients. We found that AML patients with FLT3 or DNMT3A mutations had higher expression of CD44 isoform 6 (CD44v6) compared to normal specimens. Therefore, we intended to demonstrate CD44v6 could be a specific option for AML with FLT3 or DNMT3A mutations. Methods Internal tandem duplication (ITD) mutations of FLT3 (FLT3/ITD) knock‐in clone and DNMT3A‐R882H mutant clones of SKM‐1 cells were generated using CRISPR/Cas9 and lentiviral transfection, respectively. CD44v6 CAR‐T cells were constructed by transfecting T cells with lentivirus containing CD44v6 CAR. CD44v6 expression in AML cell lines, AML patients and healthy donors was evaluated by flow cytometry. DNA methylation assays were used to analyse the mechanisms of FLT3 and DNMT3A mutations affecting CD44v6 expression. Results Aberrant overexpression of CD44v6 was observed in AML cell lines with FLT3 or DNMT3A mutations compared to the wild‐type SKM‐1 or K562 cells. AML patients with FLT3 or DNMT3A mutations had higher expression of CD44v6 compared to normal specimens. Then we constructed CD44v6 CAR‐T cells and found that CD44v6 CAR‐T specifically lysed CD44v6+ cells, accompanied by cytokines release. No significant killing effect was observed from CD44v6‐ AML cells and normal cells after co‐culture with CD44v6 CAR‐T. These results were also observed in vivo. Furthermore, we found that FLT3 or DNMT3A mutations induced CD44v6 overexpression by downregulating the CpG methylation of CD44 promoter. Conclusions Collectively, CD44v6 is a promising target of CAR‐T for AML patients with FLT3 or DNMT3A mutations.

Highly toxic pollutants such as dioxins and metals emitted from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration have caused a serious not-in-my-backyard social phenomenon. However, relatively few studies have comprehensively analyzed the contaminant characteristics, coexistence relationships and potential health risks of dioxins and metals in soils near MSW incinerator. Therefore, this study monitors 17 dioxin homologues and 13 metals in soils around MSW incinerator to evaluate their contaminant and coexistence characteristics as well as associated potential health risks. The empirical study focused on Hainan Province, a relatively pure area with no heavy industry and low population density in southern China. The contamination characteristics analysis shows that the total International Toxic Equivalence Quantity (I-TEQ) concentrations of dioxins are comparatively lower than the risk control standards and that in previous studies, whereas the concentrations of specific metals (e.g., Ni, Cu, Cd and Cr) are higher than the risk control standards. To explore the coexistence relationships, the statistical analysis is conducted and indicates that Sb, Cd, Zn and Pb metals (extracted as principal components, with a variance contribution rate of 30.89%) and most dioxin homologues (accounting for 82.83% of the total I-TEQ values) are clustered into one group, suggesting that they may have similar distribution characteristics and origins. Furthermore, the health risk analysis of two toxic pollutants reveals that the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of dioxins and most metals (except for Ni and Cr) are all below the acceptable levels, implying that the studied incinerator posed no obvious health effect to the surrounding residents.

Nitrite poses a serious threat to intensive aquaculture. Protein, as a major nutrient in animals, is vital for protecting animal tissues from damage. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of dietary protein on gill tissue structure and the underlying mechanisms in sub-adult grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) exposed to nitrite stress. Six iso-energetic semi-purified diets containing different protein levels (16–31 %) were formulated, and fed to fish for 60 d. The fish were then exposed to a nitrite solution for 4 d. Histopathological observation and determination of related indices (serum glucose, serum cortisol, nitric oxide, peroxynitrite, reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and protein carbonyl) showed that 22–25 % dietary protein significantly alleviated the nitrite-induced stress response, gill tissue damage and oxidative damage. Further research found that a suitable dietary protein suppressed the nitrite-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78) related signaling pathway which possibly activated autophagy and apoptosis. Interestingly, we discovered that proper dietary protein reduced autophagy, probably through unc-51-like kinase 1 (Ulk1), BCL-2-interacting myosin-like coiled-coil protein (Beclin1), autophagy-related gene 5 (Atg5), Atg12, microtubule-associated protein1 light chain 3 (LC3), BCL-2 interacting protein 3 (BNIP3) and autophagy receptor P62 (p62). We also found that an appropriate dietary protein inhibited nitrite-induced apoptosis via mitochondrial and death receptor pathways. In summary, our findings are the first to demonstrate that 22–25 % of dietary protein levels can play a protective role against nitrite-induced gill injury.

Catharanthus roseus receptor-like kinase 1-like (CrRLK1L) proteins constitute a subfamily of receptor-like kinases (RLKs) that play diverse roles during fertilization, vegetative development and plant pathogen interactions. CrRLK1Ls possess a unique malectin-like domain at N-terminal that bind to oligo- or polysaccharides from cell wall polymers, byproducts of cell wall degradation, or membrane-associated or secreted glycosylated proteins. CrRLK1L members have been identified in many organisms, however, the study of this gene family in resurrection plant species has not been reported to date. Resurrection plants are a kind of extremophiles that can survive extreme drought stress (desiccation) and recover rapidly after rehydration, and display specific and reversible cell wall structure and component changes during dehydration and rehydration. Here, we identified 18 CrRLK1L protein members in the resurrection plant Boea hygrometrica genome and classified them into 9 clades based on the conserved amino acid sequences. Phylogenetic analysis reveals the expansion of FER clade, the absence of MEDOS and CVY clades and the emergence of a new Bh-specific clade in BhCrRLK1L protein family. Analysis of cis-regulatory elements has predicted several types of drought induced elements and/or drought related hormone responsiveness elements in the promoter regions of all BhCrRLK1Ls. In agreement, we found 15 members of BhCrRLK1Ls change their expression pattern in response to drought stress, based on a previous transcriptome survey. Subsequent qRT-PCR validation of selected 7 BhCrRLK1L genes confirmed that BhFER1, BhCrRLK1L14 and BhCrRLK1L15 are induced by desiccation, and BhFER3, BhCrRLK1L17 and BhCrRLK1L18 are repressed by desiccation. Our study systematically identified the CrRLK1L members in B. hygrometrica, and analyzed the gene expression profiles in response to desiccation stresses, which lays a foundation for exploring the function of BhCrRLK1Ls in desiccation signal transduction in B. hygrometrica.

Emerging evidence shows a striking link between periodontal diseases and various human cancers including oral cancer. And periodontal pathogens, leading to periodontal diseases development, may serve a crucial role in oral cancer. This review elucidated the molecular mechanisms of periodontal pathogens in oral cancer. The pathogens directly engage in their own unique molecular dialogue with the host epithelium to acquire cancer phenotypes, and indirectly induce a proinflammatory environment and carcinogenic substance in favor of cancer development. And functional, rather than compositional, properties of oral microbial community correlated with cancer development are discussed. The effect of periodontal pathogens on periodontal diseases and oral cancer will further detail the pathogenesis of oral cancer and intensify the need of maintaining oral hygiene for the prevention of oral diseases including oral cancer.

Summary: Acute myocardial infarction is a leading cause of death worldwide. We have previously identified two cardioprotective molecules — FGF1 and CHIR99021— that confer cardioprotection in mouse and pig models of acute myocardial infarction. Here, we aimed to determine if improved myocardial metabolism contributes to this cardioprotection. Nanofibers loaded with FGF1 and CHIR99021 were intramyocardially injected to ischemic myocardium of adult mice immediately following surgically induced myocardial infarction. Animals were euthanized 3 and 7 days later. Our data suggested that FGF1/CHIR99021 nanofibers enhanced the heart’s capacity to utilize glycolysis as an energy source and reduced the accumulation of branched-chain amino acids in ischemic myocardium. The impact of FGF1/CHIR99021 on metabolism was more obvious in the first three days post myocardial infarction. Taken together, these findings suggest that FGF1/CHIR99021 protects the heart against ischemic injury via improving myocardial metabolism which may be exploited for treatment of acute myocardial infarction in humans.

Objective: The objective of this study is to comprehensively understand the psychological experience of primiparous women during breastfeeding while dealing with lactating mastitis and to establish a reliable foundation for tailored support measures. Methods: Twenty primiparous mothers from a tertiary hospital in Beijing between January and March 2023 were chosen using purposive sampling for semi-structured interviews. After conducting 20 interviews, data saturation was achieved. The Colaizzi's seven-step analytical approach was employed to analyze, summarize, and refine the identified themes. Results: Among primiparous women afflicted by lactating mastitis, the primary themes regarding breastfeeding attitudes included three key aspects: (1) uncertainty during the initial diagnosis phase, (2) intricate emotional journey during treatment, and (3) positive psychological outlook during the recovery stage. Conclusion: Primiparous women undergoing lactating mastitis experience substantial physical and psychological strain. It is crucial for medical personnel, family caregivers, and society at large to be attuned to the emotions of these patients. Tailored support measures should be offered to enhance patients' physical and mental well-being and facilitate disease recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
