Fractures of long bones in limbs are rare traumatic events in horses. This study investigates whether the incidence and types of fractures can be related to the histomorphometric features of the radius and tibia, which experience different biomechanical stresses and exhibit varying incidences and types of fractures. Clinical observations suggest that, in adults, slightly transverse and comminuted fractures are present in the radius, while the tibia shows a higher frequency of longitudinal and spiral fractures. Microscopic observations reveal no apparent distinctive characteristics between the radius and tibia, whereas the histomorphometric data highlight differences in the osteon density, eccentricity, and diameters of the osteons and Haversian canals. To sum up, tibial osteons are more numerous and smaller than those in the radius, resulting in a 15% higher total extension of the cement line in the tibia compared to the radius. These histomorphometric differences are an evolutionary adaptation to the different biomechanical stresses that involve the thoracic and pelvic limbs. Our results could help better understand numerous clinical realities detectable through retrospective analyses and aid in evaluating a specific bone's predisposition towards traumatic events in all mammals, including humans.

In this contribution, new data concerning algae, bryophytes, fungi and lichens of the Italian flora are presented. It includes new records and confirmations for the algal genera Chara and Nitella, the bryophyte genera Brachythecium, Didymodon, Fissidens, Physcomitrium, and Riccia, the fungal genera Biatoropsis, Cantharellus, Coprinellus, Dacrymyces, Inosperma, Nigropuncta, Urocystis, and Xanthoriicola, and the lichen genera Arthonia, Bellemerea, Circinaria, Lecania, Lecanora, Lecidella, Mycobilimbia, Naetrocymbe, Parmelia, Peltigera, Porpidia, Scytinium, and Usnea.

A model based on conservation laws was developed to simulate the continuous, non-isothermal CO2 adsorption on porous materials in a packed bed. A set of parameters inferred from correlations between dimensionless numbers was used to mathematically solve the problem. The developed rigorous model includes a set of partial differential equations with proper boundary conditions. By adapting the equations for numerical solutions, it describes the process under unsteady state conditions, enabling the derivation of temperature and concentration profiles essential for process analysis. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to assess the effect of parameters on the model's solution.

In this paper, we analyzed the role of credit consortia in supporting SMEs of the Italian region of Sardinia around and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic crisis. Credit consortia (or credit guarantee schemes) are financial companies whose institutional role is to support small firms needing bank lending who are individually weak in the bank–firm relationship. Credit consortia are particularly relevant in Italy, where they mitigate credit restrictions for SMEs by supplying guarantees to the bank, allowing for partial coverage of potential losses, providing peer-monitoring activity, and collectively negotiating more favorable interest rates and other conditions with banks. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, credit consortia had a crucial role in supporting Sardinian SMEs with guarantees and obtaining government financial support. The evolution of Sardinian companies’ financial structures during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic shows that the confidi-supported firms have low capitalization and are financially fragile yet capable of good returns. The liquidity provided by the government during the pandemic loosened these constraints, boosting the available liquidity, which translated, in short, into higher investment and higher sales. The demographics of Sardinian companies in 2019–2022 and the volumes of loans and savings showed a strengthening of debt capital payments, increased collections, and a progressive improvement of the Sardinian companies’ net financial positions.

Every human body is characterized by many signs, marks, features, that make it unique and form it like a text. In order to interpret this peculiar writing it’s helpful to resort to hermeneutical view, very useful to go beyond the appearance and to deeply understand the person and his/her past life. Reading of physical text cannot exclude the context; moreover, it is to prefer the hermeneutical instead of the epistemological view. Skill in reading other people’s body is very useful in educative professions.

Postcolonial education gets theoretic benefit by holding a dialogue with comparative education, that can give it hints and suggestions of method and contents. Comparative education studied educative systems of ex-colonies, where it was quite normal to transfer school systems from motherland, without respect for uses, tradition and local context. Studies and researches about colonial past are very useful to realize present difficulties of multicultural community and, moreover, they offer new notions to postcolonial reflection.

Brain aging in mammals is characterized by morphological and functional changes in neural cells. Macroscopically, this process, leading to progressive cerebral volume loss and functional decline, includes memory and motor neuron deficits, as well as behavioral disorders. Morphologically, brain aging is associated with aged neurons and astrocytes, appearing enlarged and flattened, and expressing enhanced pH-dependent β-galactosidase activity. Multiple mechanisms are considered hallmarks of cellular senescence in vitro, including cell cycle arrest, increased lysosomal activity, telomere shortening, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. The most common markers for senescence identification were identified in (i) proteins implicated in cell cycle arrest, such as p16, p21, and p53, (ii) increased lysosomal mass, and (iii) increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) expression. Finally, dysfunctional autophagy, a process occurring during aging, contributes to altering brain homeostasis. The brains of mammals can be studied at cellular and subcellular levels to elucidate the mechanisms on the basis of age-related and degenerative disorders. The aim of this review is to summarize and update the most recent knowledge about brain aging through a comparative approach, where similarities and differences in some mammalian species are considered.

Abstract Joint inhumations of adults and children are an intriguing aspect of the shift from collective to single burial rites in third millennium BC Western Eurasia. Here, we revisit two exceptional Beaker period adult–child graves using ancient DNA: Altwies in Luxembourg and Dunstable Downs in Britain. Ancestry modelling and patterns of shared IBD segments between the individuals examined, and contemporary genomes from Central and Northwest Europe, highlight the continental connections of British Beakers. Although simultaneous burials may involve individuals with no social or biological ties, we present evidence that close blood relations played a role in shaping third millennium BC social systems and burial practices, for example a biological mother and her son buried together at Altwies. Extended family, such as a paternal aunt at Dunstable Downs, could also act as ‘substitute parents’ in the grave. Hypotheses are explored to explain such simultaneous inhumations. Whilst intercommunity violence, infectious disease and epidemics may be considered as explanations, they fail to account for both the specific, codified nature of this particular form of inhumation, and its pervasiveness, as evidenced by a representative sample of 131 adult–child graves from 88 sites across Eurasia, all dating to the third and second millennia BC.

Background: The paper discusses the sandwich generation (SG) using a literature review approach. Longer life spans and the delayed economic and psychological independence of children mean that middle-aged parents find themselves caring for parents and children at the same period in their lives, at times this care may extend to grandchildren and grandparents. Results: The type of care varies depending on each person’s need but also on the gender of the individual who looks after their parents while taking care of their own children. Cultural factors can also come into play. Conclusion: Complications in the lives of those who are part of the SG may arise affecting the quality of their time, their psyche, physical and financial situation. Having the necessary skills and strategies to cope with these complications is extremely important.
