1. Rethinking category-selectivity in human visual cortex

Abstract: A wealth of studies report evidence that occipitotemporal cortex tessellates into "category-selective" brain regions that are apparently specialized for representing ecologically important visual stimuli like faces, bodies, scenes, and tools. Here, we argue that while valuable insights have been gained through the lens of category-selectivity, a more complete view of visual function in occipitotemporal cortex requires centering the behavioral relevance of visual properties in real-world environments rather than stimulus category. Focusing on behavioral relevance challenges a simple mapping between stimulus and visual function in occipitotemporal cortex because the environmental properties relevant to a behavior are visually diverse and how a given property is represented is modulated by our goals. Grounding our thinking in behavioral relevance rather than category-selectivity raises a host of theoretical and empirical issues that we discuss while providing proposals for how existing tools can be harnessed in this light to better understand visual function in occipitotemporal cortex.

2. Examining the structure functions of nucleons by introducing new Ansatz and their consequences on parton distribution functions in higher approximation

Abstract: By introducing ansatz and using a PDF at the $N^3LO$ approximation in this paper, we have studied the structure of the nucleons in generalized parton distributions (GPDs). For this purpose, the form factors and the electric radius of nucleons, as well as the quark's form factors, are calculated in this paper. These calculations give important new information about the nucleons and the distribution of partons within them. The results are analyzed, and to validate them, the abstract emphasizes the importance of comparing the results with existing research and experimental data. By varying the free appropriate parameters of the new ansatz, the study seeks to optimize the model, ensure its suitability for accurately describing the nucleon's internal structure, and provide valuable insights about the distribution of partons.

3. PDL: A Declarative Prompt Programming Language

Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have taken the world by storm by making many previously difficult uses of AI feasible. LLMs are controlled via highly expressive textual prompts and return textual answers. Unfortunately, this unstructured text as input and output makes LLM-based applications brittle. This motivates the rise of prompting frameworks, which mediate between LLMs and the external world. However, existing prompting frameworks either have a high learning curve or take away control over the exact prompts from the developer. To overcome this dilemma, this paper introduces the Prompt Declaration Language (PDL). PDL is a simple declarative data-oriented language that puts prompts at the forefront, based on YAML. PDL works well with many LLM platforms and LLMs. It supports writing interactive applications that call LLMs and tools, and makes it easy to implement common use-cases such as chatbots, RAG, or agents. We hope PDL will make prompt programming simpler, less brittle, and more enjoyable.

4. Optimal Inferential Control of Convolutional Neural Networks

Abstract: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved remarkable success in representing and simulating complex spatio-temporal dynamic systems within the burgeoning field of scientific machine learning. However, optimal control of CNNs poses a formidable challenge, because the ultra-high dimensionality and strong nonlinearity inherent in CNNs render them resistant to traditional gradient-based optimal control techniques. To tackle the challenge, we propose an optimal inferential control framework for CNNs that represent a complex spatio-temporal system, which sequentially infers the best control decisions based on the specified control objectives. This reformulation opens up the utilization of sequential Monte Carlo sampling, which is efficient in searching through high-dimensional spaces for nonlinear inference. We specifically leverage ensemble Kalman smoothing, a sequential Monte Carlo algorithm, to take advantage of its computational efficiency for nonlinear high-dimensional systems. Further, to harness graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate the computation, we develop a new sequential ensemble Kalman smoother based on matrix variate distributions. The smoother is capable of directly handling matrix-based inputs and outputs of CNNs without vectorization to fit with the parallelized computing architecture of GPUs. Numerical experiments show that the proposed approach is effective in controlling spatio-temporal systems with high-dimensional state and control spaces. Abstract: This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

6. Accelerated Algorithms for Source Orientation Detection (AORI) and Spatiotemporal LCMV (ALCMV) Beamforming in EEG Source Localization

Abstract: This paper illustrates the development of two efficient source localization algorithms for electroencephalography (EEG) data, aimed at enhancing real-time brain signal reconstruction while addressing the computational challenges of traditional methods. Accurate EEG source localization is crucial for applications in cognitive neuroscience, neurorehabilitation, and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). To make significant progress toward precise source orientation detection and improved signal reconstruction, we introduce the Accelerated Linear Constrained Minimum Variance (ALCMV) beamforming toolbox and the Accelerated Brain Source Orientation Detection (AORI) toolbox. The ALCMV algorithm speeds up EEG source reconstruction by utilizing recursive covariance matrix calculations, while AORI simplifies source orientation detection from three dimensions to one, reducing computational load by 66% compared to conventional methods. Using both simulated and real EEG data, we demonstrate that these algorithms maintain high accuracy, with orientation errors below 0.2% and signal reconstruction accuracy within 2%. These findings suggest that the proposed toolboxes represent a substantial advancement in the efficiency and speed of EEG source localization, making them well-suited for real-time neurotechnological applications.

7. The spatial impact of a Western diet in enriching Galectin-1-regulated Rho, ECM, and SASP signaling in a novel MASH-HCC mouse model.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) arising from metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) presents a significant clinical challenge, particularly given the prevalence of the Western diet (WD). The influence of diet on the tumor microenvironment remains poorly understood. Galectin-1 (Gal-1) is a biomarker for HCC and has a crucial role in liver carcinogenesis. Our previous studies demonstrated that silencing Gal-1 effectively treats mouse HCC. However, the impacts of a WD on Gal-1 signaling on MASH to HCC progression are unknown, and this study addresses these knowledge gaps. METHODS: We developed a novel MASH-HCC mouse model. Using spatial transcriptomics and multiplex immunohistochemistry (IHC), we studied the effects of a WD on the liver and tumor microenvironment. By modulating Gal-1 expression through silencing and overexpression, we explored the location-specific impacts of WD on Gal-1 signaling. RESULTS: Pathways such as Rho signaling, extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, and senescence-associated secretory phenotypes (SASP) were prominently activated in WD-induced metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and MASH-HCC, compared to healthy livers controls. Furthermore, Rho GTPase effectors, ECM remodeling, neutrophil degranulation, cellular stress, and cell cycle pathways were consistently enriched in human and mouse MASH-HCC. Spatially, these pathways were enriched in the tumor and tumor margins of mouse MASH-HCC. Additionally, there was a notable increase in CD11c and PD-L1-positive cells from non-tumor tissues to the tumor margin and inside the tumor of MASH-HCC, suggesting compromised immune surveillance due to WD intake. Moreover, MASH-HCC exhibited significant Gal-1 induction in N-Cadherin-positive cells, indicating enhanced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Modulating Gal-1 expression in MASH-HCC further established its specific roles in regulating Rho signaling and SASP in the tumor margin and non-tumor tissues in MASH-HCC. CONCLUSION: WD intake significantly influences vital cellular processes involved in Gal-1-mediated signaling, including Rho signaling and ECM remodeling, in the tumor microenvironment, thereby contributing to the development of MASH-HCC.

Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

10. HENNC: Hardware Engine for Artificial Neural Network-based Chaotic Oscillators

Abstract: This letter introduces a framework for the automatic generation of hardware cores for Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based chaotic oscillators. The framework trains the model to approximate a chaotic system, then performs design space exploration yielding potential hardware architectures for its implementation. The framework then generates the corresponding synthesizable High-Level Synthesis code and a validation testbench from a selected solution. The hardware design primarily targets FPGAs. The proposed framework offers a rapid hardware design process of candidate architectures superior to manually designed works in terms of hardware cost and throughput. Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

12. Extraction, purification and characterization of peroxidase from Vitis vinifera wastes

Abstract: The proper consumption of plant wastes could not only provide a possible source of natural products, but it also is an environmental friendly research. The aim of this study was to use grape wastes as a source of peroxidase. In practice, one isoenzyme of peroxidase (POD1) was partially purified from Vitis vinifera wastes, the plant which is widely harvested in Iran. The activity of this novel peroxidase was determined using guaiacol as its substrate. The new peroxidase was partially purified and its kinetic parameters determined. The values of Km and Vmax of peroxidase for guaiacol were 83.2 mM and 0.35 M/min respectively. Optimum pH and temperature were determined for guaiacol to be 6.2 and 60°C respectively. According to SDS-PAGE results, the molecular weight of isozymes was 38-40 KD. The results indicate that agricultural leftovers from Vitis vinifera are a considerable source for a peroxidase with reliable kinetic behaviors.

13. Targeting Lactobacillus johnsonii to reverse chronic kidney disease.

Abstract: Accumulated evidence suggested that gut microbial dysbiosis interplayed with progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, no available therapy is effective in suppressing progressive CKD. Here, using microbiomics in 480 participants including healthy controls and patients with stage 1-5 CKD, we identified an elongation taxonomic chain Bacilli-Lactobacillales-Lactobacillaceae-Lactobacillus-Lactobacillus johnsonii correlated with patients with CKD progression, whose abundance strongly correlated with clinical kidney markers. L. johnsonii abundance reduced with progressive CKD in rats with adenine-induced CKD. L. johnsonii supplementation ameliorated kidney lesion. Serum indole-3-aldehyde (IAld), whose level strongly negatively correlated with creatinine level in CKD rats, decreased in serum of rats induced using unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) and 5/6 nephrectomy (NX) as well as late CKD patients. Treatment with IAld dampened kidney lesion through suppressing aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) signal in rats with CKD or UUO, and in cultured 1-hydroxypyrene-induced HK-2 cells. Renoprotective effect of IAld was partially diminished in AHR deficiency mice and HK-2 cells. Our further data showed that treatment with L. johnsonii attenuated kidney lesion by suppressing AHR signal via increasing serum IAld level. Taken together, targeting L. johnsonii might reverse patients with CKD. This study provides a deeper understanding of how microbial-produced tryptophan metabolism affects host disease and discovers potential pathways for prophylactic and therapeutic treatments for CKD patients.

14. The Limit Space of Self-similar Groups and Schreier graphs

Abstract: The present paper investigates the limit $G$-space $\mathcal{J}_{G}$ generated by the self-similar action of automatic groups on a regular rooted tree. The limit space $\mathcal{J}_{G}$ is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the family of Schreier graphs $\Gamma_{n}$; therefore, $\mathcal{J}_{G}$ can be approximated by Schreier graphs on level $n$-th when $n$ tends to infinity. We propose a computer program whose code is written in Wolfram language computes the adjacency matrix of Schreier graph $\Gamma_{n}$ at each specified level of the regular rooted tree. In this paper, the Schreier graphs corresponding to each automatic group is computed by applying the program to some collection of automata groups, including classic automatic groups.

Abstract: The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. 19. Investigation of Punicic Acid Effects on Matrix Metalloproteinase Genes Expression in Bovine Fibroblast like-Synoviocytes as a Model of Osteoarthritis

Abstract: Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive, age-associated disease that is characterized with cartilage destruction, subchondral bone remodeling and inflammation of the synovial membrane. Considering the complications of common treatments of OA, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids, investigating new treatments for this disorder is crucial. Recently, the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) expression in pathogenesis of OA has attracted attention. Objective: This study aimed to explore the effect of punicic acid (PA) in inhibition of MMPs gene expression in LPS-stimulated Bovine Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (BFLS) as a model of OA. Methods: In the first stage, the toxicity of PA was measured using MTT assay on BFLS cells. Afterward, the cells were stimulated by LPS (Lipopolysaccharide) and MMPs (Matrix Metalloproteinase) expression level in the BFLS cells were investigated using Real-Time PCR, in vitro Migration and Gelatin Zymography, Western Blot Analysis, ELISA Assay and Invasion Assay. Results: The results showed that PA significantly decreased MMP-9 expression levels in LPS-stimulated BFLS cells; also, it suppressed migration and invasion of the mentioned cells. However, PA had no significant effect on MMP-1-2-3. Conclusion: Based on our results PA could significantly reduce the activity and inflammatory effect of MMP-9 in OA, its potential role as a supplementary agent to common NSAIDs and corticosteroids was confirmed. Nonetheless, cellular modeling does not significantly confirm the beneficial effect of OA in patients.

20. Phytoremediation of the soils contaminated with cyanide by Vetiveria zizanioides

Abstract: Background and Objective: In the field of environmental risk assessment, Cyanide is one of the most important pollutants of water, soil and air that has an important impact on the ecosystem and environment of the contaminated area. Therefore, the present study aimed to prove the biological effectiveness of Vetiveria zizanioides in phytoremediation of soils contaminated with cyanide. Materials and Methods: This research study was conducted on a gold mine wastewater. The dried effluent samples amended with soil with various cyanide concentrations. Seven treatments with different concentrations of cyanide were obtained (mean cyanide content in G soil, 14.77 mg/kg, F soil, 10.13 mg/kg, E soil, mg/kg 8.09, D soil, mg/kg 7.53, C soil, 3.32 mg/kg, B soil, 2.52 mg/kg and A soil without cyanide (as control). After two months, the amount of cyanide in the soil, roots and leaves of the plant, as well as the total protein and proline content, and the number and length of the leaves of the plant were measured and then statistically evaluated by SPSS15 Tukey and t Paired Samples T Tests. Results: The results of this study showed that the increase of cyanide had a significant effect on the amount of proline (proline in the plant increased), total protein (in the plant increased), number of leaves (decrease in number) and the length (length reduction) of the leaves of the vetiver. The amount of cyanide in the leaves and roots of the plant was increased. Cyanide content was decreased in the different treatments. Cyanide content was decreased in G 50.93%, F 38.20%, E 27.19%, D 38.37%, C 17.77% and B 16.66%. Conclusion: The results indicated that increase of the amount of cyanide in soil resulted in observational changes in the morphological and biochemical characteristics of the plant. However, Vetiveria zizanioides exhibited very high resistance to soil cyanide and the planting of vetiver in highly contaminated soils can lead to a reduction of cyanide up to 50 percent. Vetiveria zizanioides had higher resistance to cyanide and showed better phytoremediation than the other plants.

Abstract: Doping of liquid argon TPCs (LArTPCs) with a small concentration of xenon is a technique for light-shifting and facilitates the detection of the liquid argon scintillation light. In this paper, we present the results of the first doping test ever performed in a kiloton-scale LArTPC. From February to May 2020, we carried out this special run in the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype (ProtoDUNE-SP) at CERN, featuring 720 t of total liquid argon mass with 410 t of fiducial mass. A 5.4 ppm nitrogen contamination was present during the xenon doping campaign. The goal of the run was to measure the light and charge response of the detector to the addition of xenon, up to a concentration of 18.8 ppm. The main purpose was to test the possibility for reduction of non-uniformities in light collection, caused by deployment of photon detectors only within the anode planes. Light collection was analysed as a function of the xenon concentration, by using the pre-existing photon detection system (PDS) of ProtoDUNE-SP and an additional smaller set-up installed specifically for this run. In this paper we first summarize our current understanding of the argon-xenon energy transfer process and the impact of the presence of nitrogen in argon with and without xenon dopant. We then describe the key elements of ProtoDUNE-SP and the injection method deployed. Two dedicated photon detectors were able to collect the light produced by xenon and the total light. The ratio of these components was measured to be about 0.65 as 18.8 ppm of xenon were injected. We performed studies of the collection efficiency as a function of the distance between tracks and light detectors, demonstrating enhanced uniformity of response for the anode-mounted PDS. 22. Volatile working memory representations crystallize with practice.

Abstract: Working memory, the process through which information is transiently maintained and manipulated over a brief period, is essential for most cognitive functions1-4. However, the mechanisms underlying the generation and evolution of working-memory neuronal representations at the population level over long timescales remain unclear. Here, to identify these mechanisms, we trained head-fixed mice to perform an olfactory delayed-association task in which the mice made decisions depending on the sequential identity of two odours separated by a 5 s delay. Optogenetic inhibition of secondary motor neurons during the late-delay and choice epochs strongly impaired the task performance of the mice. Mesoscopic calcium imaging of large neuronal populations of the secondary motor cortex (M2), retrosplenial cortex (RSA) and primary motor cortex (M1) showed that many late-delay-epoch-selective neurons emerged in M2 as the mice learned the task. Working-memory late-delay decoding accuracy substantially improved in the M2, but not in the M1 or RSA, as the mice became experts. During the early expert phase, working-memory representations during the late-delay epoch drifted across days, while the stimulus and choice representations stabilized. In contrast to single-plane layer 2/3 (L2/3) imaging, simultaneous volumetric calcium imaging of up to 73,307 M2 neurons, which included superficial L5 neurons, also revealed stabilization of late-delay working-memory representations with continued practice. Thus, delay- and choice-related activities that are essential for working-memory performance drift during learning and stabilize only after several days of expert performance.

23. BCG as an Innovative Option for HCC Treatment: Repurposing and Mechanistic Insights.

Abstract: This study investigates Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) as a potential treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a condition often associated with unfavorable treatment outcomes. Exploiting BCGs recognized immune-boosting properties, preclinical trials are conducted using HCC mice, with a single subcutaneous dose of BCG administered post-tumor formation. Results indicate that BCG treatment effectively diminishes tumor burden and extends survival in both male and female HCC mice. Positive influences on hepatic fibrosis and metabolism are observed, leading to a reduction in lipid levels. Spatial analysis underscores BCGs tumor-specific effects, inducing the enrichment of metabolic pathways and inhibiting various cancer-related pathways. Furthermore, BCG promotes immune cell infiltration, including CD4+, CD8+ T cells, and M1 macrophages, in both v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homolog 1(AKT)/neutoblastoma RAS viral oncogene homolog (RAS) and β-catenin positive HCC models. Interestingly, blocking T cells, trained immunity, and Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) function reverses BCGs anti-HCC effects. In conclusion, BCG emerges as a promising treatment option for HCC, characterized by a favorable safety profile and efficacy in inhibiting fibrosis, improving metabolism, and engaging both trained immunity and T cells in therapeutic mechanisms.

Abstract: DUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precision measurements of the PMNS matrix parameters, including the CP-violating phase. It will also stand ready to observe supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector implements liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, and combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with the sub-centimeter spatial resolution required to image those events with high precision. The addition of a photon detection system enhances physics capabilities for all DUNE physics drivers and opens prospects for further physics explorations. Given its size, the far detector will be implemented as a set of modules, with LArTPC designs that differ from one another as newer technologies arise. In the vertical drift LArTPC design, a horizontal cathode bisects the detector, creating two stacked drift volumes in which ionization charges drift towards anodes at either the top or bottom. The anodes are composed of perforated PCB layers with conductive strips, enabling reconstruction in 3D. Light-trap-style photon detection modules are placed both on the cryostat's side walls and on the central cathode where they are optically powered. 25. Towards English Language Learners' Wellbeing: Contributing Factors and Stressors

Abstract: Understanding and enhancing wellbeing are at the heart of positive psychology. Both ELT teachers and researchers have recently been urged to prioritize wellbeing in their teaching and research. However, far too little attention has been paid to wellbeing among ELT learners, especially from their own perspective. Accordingly, this study aimed at developing an understanding of ELT learners' perceptions of their stressors in class and recommendations to improve their wellbeing. Out of eighty survey participants, we selected nine participants with the highest and nine participants with the lowest scores on a wellbeing measure. Then, we conducted oral survey interviews with each of these participants, and the data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The findings indicated four main stressors for ELT learners: lack of preparation, assessment, speaking English, and lack of understanding. Participants also made several recommendations to teachers, the university, and for themselves which they believe would help enhance their wellbeing.

Abstract: Abstract Background The incidence of various mood disorders and temperaments in ADHD patients is well-documented, irrespective of age. These temperamental differences cause emotional and behavioral instability, impacting individual and social functioning, and overall quality of life. This study evaluates different temperaments in adults with ADHD compared to those without ADHD. Methods This case–control study was performed on 75 adult ADHD patients as the case group and 75 adults without ADHD as the control group. A demographic questionnaire and a shortened Persian version of the TEMPS-A questionnaire were given and completed to the people included in the study to assess different mood temperaments. Results Comparing different components of mood temperaments between the patients with and without ADHD showed significantly higher mean scores for irritable, anxious, depressed, and cyclothymic temperaments in those with ADHD as compared to a control group. In the group suffering from ADHD, women had significantly higher mean scores for dysthymic and anxious temperaments as compared to men, while the mean score for cyclothymic temperaments was significantly higher in men than in women. A high academic degree was associated with lower scores for mood temperaments, while mood temperaments were independent of patients’ age. Conclusions The higher score of various mood temperaments in patients with ADHD compared to people without this disorder is completely predictable, and this score can potentially affect the gender of the patients as well as their education level. Given the higher scores of temperamental traits in patients with adult ADHD, implementing screening programs aimed at identifying temperamental disorders in these patients is highly emphasized.

Abstract: This paper explores a previously uncharted automaton group generated by a 5-state automaton $(\Pi, A)$ acts by self-similarity on the regular rooted tree $A^{*}$ over a 2-letter alphabet set $A$. Group $G$ has been subjected to several observations that reveal the self-similar $G$-action possesses several notable characteristics: it is a weak branch, contracting, fractal group, and satisfies the open set condition with an exponential growth rate in activity. The corresponding Schreier graphs $\Gamma$ of the group action on the binary rooted tree, for $n\leq 12$, are presented. Abstract: Multipliers are widely-used arithmetic operators in digital signal processing and machine learning circuits. Due to their relatively high complexity, they can have high latency and be a significant source of power consumption. One strategy to alleviate these limitations is to use approximate computing. This paper thus introduces an original FPGA-based approximate multiplier specifically optimized for machine learning computations. It utilizes dynamically reconfigurable lookup table (LUT) primitives in AMD-Xilinx technology to realize the core part of the computations. The paper provides an in-depth analysis of the hardware architecture, implementation outcomes, and accuracy evaluations of the multiplier proposed in INT8 precision. Implementation results on an AMD-Xilinx Kintex Ultrascale+ FPGA demonstrate remarkable savings of 64% and 67% in LUT utilization for signed multiplication and multiply-and-accumulation configurations, respectively, when compared to the standard Xilinx multiplier core. Accuracy measurements on four popular deep learning (DL) benchmarks indicate a minimal average accuracy decrease of less than 0.29% during post-training deployment, with the maximum reduction staying less than 0.33%. 41. Targeting stroma and tumor, silencing galectin 1 treats orthotopic mouse hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract: This study examines inhibiting galectin 1 (Gal1) as a treatment option for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Gal1 has immunosuppressive and cancer-promoting roles. Our data showed that Gal1 was highly expressed in human and mouse HCC. The levels of Gal1 positively correlated with the stages of human HCC and negatively with survival. The roles of Gal1 in HCC were studied using overexpression (OE) or silencing using Igals1 siRNA delivered by AAV9. Prior to HCC initiation induced by RAS and AKT mutations, lgals1-OE and silencing had opposite impacts on tumor load. The treatment effect of lgals1 siRNA was further demonstrated by intersecting HCC at different time points when the tumor load had already reached 9% or even 42% of the body weight. Comparing spatial transcriptomic profiles of Gal1 silenced and OE HCC, inhibiting matrix formation and recognition of foreign antigen in CD45+ cell-enriched areas located at tumor-margin likely contributed to the anti-HCC effects of Gal1 silencing. Within the tumors, silencing Gal1 inhibited translational initiation, elongation, and termination. Furthermore, Gal1 silencing increased immune cells as well as expanded cytotoxic T cells within the tumor, and the anti-HCC effect of lgals1 siRNA was CD8-dependent. Overall, Gal1 silencing has a promising potential for HCC treatment.

Abstract: This study aimed to implement a multimodal 1H/HP-13C imaging protocol to augment the serial monitoring of patients with glioma, while simultaneously pursuing methods for improving the robustness of HP-13C metabolic data. A total of 100 1H/HP [1-13C]-pyruvate MR examinations (104 HP-13C datasets) were acquired from 42 patients according to the comprehensive multimodal glioma imaging protocol. Serial data coverage, accuracy of frequency reference, and acquisition delay were evaluated using a mixed-effects model to account for multiple exams per patient. Serial atlas-based HP-13C MRI demonstrated consistency in volumetric coverage measured by inter-exam dice coefficients (0.977 ± 0.008, mean ± SD; four patients/11 exams). The atlas-derived prescription provided significantly improved data quality compared to manually prescribed acquisitions (n = 26/78; p = 0.04). The water-based method for referencing [1-13C]-pyruvate center frequency significantly reduced off-resonance excitation relative to the coil-embedded [13C]-urea phantom (4.1 ± 3.7 Hz vs. 9.9 ± 10.7 Hz; p = 0.0007). Significantly improved capture of tracer inflow was achieved with the 2-s versus 5-s HP-13C MRI acquisition delay (p = 0.007). This study demonstrated the implementation of a comprehensive multimodal 1H/HP-13C MR protocol emphasizing the monitoring of steady-state/dynamic metabolism in patients with glioma.

Abstract: Multiphoton microscopy can resolve fluorescent structures and dynamics deep in scattering tissue and has transformed neural imaging, but applying this technique in vivo can be limited by the mechanical and optical constraints of conventional objectives. Short working distance objectives can collide with compact surgical windows or other instrumentation and preclude imaging. Here we present an ultra-long working distance (20 mm) air objective called the Cousa objective. It is optimized for performance across multiphoton imaging wavelengths, offers a more than 4 mm2 field of view with submicrometer lateral resolution and is compatible with commonly used multiphoton imaging systems. A novel mechanical design, wider than typical microscope objectives, enabled this combination of specifications. We share the full optical prescription, and report performance including in vivo two-photon and three-photon imaging in an array of species and preparations, including nonhuman primates. The Cousa objective can enable a range of experiments in neuroscience and beyond.

Abstract: PurposeTo investigate high-resolution hyperpolarized (HP) 13 C pyruvate MRI for measuring cerebral perfusion in the human brain.MethodsHP [1-13 C]pyruvate MRI was acquired in five healthy volunteers with a multi-resolution EPI sequence with 7.5 × 7.5 mm2 resolution for pyruvate. Perfusion parameters were calculated from pyruvate MRI using block-circulant singular value decomposition and compared to relative cerebral blood flow calculated from arterial spin labeling (ASL). To examine regional perfusion patterns, correlations between pyruvate and ASL perfusion were performed for whole brain, gray matter, and white matter voxels.ResultsHigh resolution 7.5 × 7.5 mm2 pyruvate images were used to obtain relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) values that were significantly positively correlated with ASL rCBF values (r = 0.48, 0.20, 0.28 for whole brain, gray matter, and white matter voxels respectively). Whole brain voxels exhibited the highest correlation between pyruvate and ASL perfusion, and there were distinct regional patterns of relatively high ASL and low pyruvate normalized rCBF found across subjects.ConclusionAcquiring HP 13 C pyruvate metabolic images at higher resolution allows for finer spatial delineation of brain structures and can be used to obtain cerebral perfusion parameters. Pyruvate perfusion parameters were positively correlated to proton ASL perfusion values, indicating a relationship between the two perfusion measures. This HP 13 C study demonstrated that hyperpolarized pyruvate MRI can assess cerebral metabolism and perfusion within the same study.

Abstract: Abstract Background Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a lethal acute viral zoonosis with a case fatality rate of 5–50%. Due to the potential of human-to human transmission of the disease, healthcare workers (HCWs) are at risk of occupational exposure to CCHF virus. Little is known about CCHF virus route of transmission and risks in Iranian HCWs. Therefore this study was designed to identify the routes of exposure to the CCHF virus among Iranian HCWs. Methods From Oct 2000 to Feb 2023, 96 CCHF suspected healthcare workers referred to national reference laboratory were tested for CCHF virus infection by the use of RT-PCR and IgM Capture Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (MAC-ELISA) and exposure history of cases were investigated to determine the CCHF virus routes of transmission in nosocomial settings. Results Twelve CCHF confirmed cases were identified including seven nurses and five physicians, with the median age of 32.5 years (range 23–53 years) and the median incubation period of 6.8 days (range from 1 to 22 days). None of the cases reported a history of tick bite or close contact with tissues or animal blood. The cases were from Razavi Khorasan (seven cases), Sistan and Baluchistan (two cases), Isfahan (one case), South Khorasan (one case) and Fars (one case). Percutaneous exposure (needle stick) (three cases), mucosal exposure (blood splash in to face) (three cases) and skin contact with blood (three cases) constituted the most prevalent routes of transmission. Since 2013, no CCHF cases have been identified among Iranian HCWs. Conclusions In healthcare settings, physicians and nurses are at risk of nosocomial CCHF virus infection. The routes of transmission mainly include direct exposures via needle-stick, mucosal or direct contact with the skin to infected blood. Continuous education and implementation of infection prevention and control measures are key factors to minimize the incidence of healthcare related CCHF.

49. Correlation between intestinal microbiota and urolithin metabolism in a human walnut dietary intervention

Abstract: Abstract This study is to investigate the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and urine levels of the ellagic acid-derived polyphenols, the urolithins, in a cohort of subjects following a three-week walnut dietary intervention. We longitudinally collected fecal and urine samples from 39 subjects before and after walnut consumption (2 oz per day for 21 days). 16S RNA gene sequencing was performed on fecal DNA to study the association between microbiota composition and the levels of nine urolithin metabolites, which were measured using UHPLC/Q-TOF–MS/MS. Fecal microbial composition was found to be significantly different between pre- and post-walnut intervention (beta diversity, FDR-p = 0.018; alpha diversity, p = 0.018). Roseburia, Rothia, Parasutterella, Lachnospiraceae UCG-004, Butyricicoccus, Bilophila, Eubacterium eligens, Lachnospiraceae UCG-001, Gordonibacter, Paraprevotella, Lachnospira, Ruminococcus torques, and Sutterella were identified as the 13 most significantly enriched genera after daily intake of walnuts. We observed 26 genera that were significantly associated with 7 urolithin metabolites, with 22 genera positively correlating after walnut supplementation (FDR-p ≤ 0.05). PICRUSt analysis showed that several inferred KEGG orthologs were associated with 4 urolithin metabolites after walnut intake. In this study, we found that walnut supplementation altered urolithin metabolites, which associates with specific changes in bacterial taxa and inferred functional contents.
