Abstract Background Standard approaches to the treatment of chronic post-radiation proctitis are associated with a high risk of complications and a high percentage of unsatisfactory results due to the reduced regenerative potential of irradiated tissues. Regenerative surgery techniques using the stromal-vascular cell fraction (SVF) based on the patient’s autologous adipose tissue are a promising direction for study. Clinical case description A 76-year-old patient suffering from chronic post-radiation erosive-ulcerative proctitis, grade 4 according to RTOG–EORTC, complicated by recurrent profuse rectal bleeding, underwent local autotransplantation of SVF into the submucosal layer of the rectum and pararectal connective tissue. The follow-up colonoscopies 1 and 6 months after the surgery and histological examination showed the complete epithelialization of ulcerative defects and a decrease in proctitis activity. There were no bleeding episodes during the 12-month postoperative observation period. Conclusion The proangiogenic, wound-healing, and anti-apoptotic effects of the SVF cell suspension provided reduction of inflammation activity, epithelialization of ulcers, and elimination of defecation-associated hemorrhage, following the SVF injection into the submucosal layer of the rectal wall and pararectal connective tissue in a patient with post-radiation proctitis with ulcers and recurrent bleeding.

Planktonic unicellular cyanobacteria are the dominant biomass producers and carbon fixers in the global ocean ecosystem, but they are not abundant in polar seawater. The interseasonal dynamics of picocyanobacterial (PC) abundance, picophytoplankton primary production, and phylogenetic diversity of PC Synechococcus were studied in the sub-Arctic White Sea. The PC abundance varied from 0.2–0.3 × 106 cells/L in February to 5.2–16.7 × 106 cells/L in July. Picophytoplankton primary production ranged from 0.22 mg C/m3 per day in winter to 11.32 mg C/m3 per day in summer. Synechococcus abundance positively correlated with water temperature and river discharge that increased in recent years in the White Sea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and ITS region clone libraries from the White Sea and Barents Sea eDNA revealed picocyanobacterial sequences related to marine Synechococcus subclusters 5.1-I, 5.I-IV, 5.2, and 5.3. All Synechococcus S5.1-I were common in the White and Barents seas and were consistently present in the picophytoplankton composition throughout the year. Synechococcus S5.2 and S5.3 appear in the PC community in summer, suggesting their river origin, and Synechococcus S5.1-IV inhabits only the Barents Sea and was not detected in the White Sea. A unique Synechococcus phylotype was revealed. It is expected that the increase in the abundance of PC and their increasing role in ecosystem functioning, as well as the enrichment of the species composition with new phylotypes in the semi-enclosed sub-Arctic White Sea, which is vulnerable to the effects of climate change, will be characteristic of all Arctic seas in general.

The article studies importance of marketing analysis of electric power industry on the example the Ural Federal District. A brief characteristic of the region under consideration has been given and prevailing branches of specialization and territories of their location reflected. Electricity consumption indicators in dynamics for the decade (2012–2022) for all groups of consumers in the region (industrial consumers, population, non-industrial consumers, budgetary consumers, and agricultural producers) have been analyzed, and electricity consumption structure considered, i.e. electricity shares that fall on each group of consumers have been revealed. Forecasts of electricity consumption have been made and dynamics of such an important indicator as electricity intensity of gross regional product analyzed. Dynamics of electricity tariffs for urban and rural population, non-industrial consumers, as well as for large and small industrial enterprises, has been analyzed. Consumers’ ability to pay for electricity has been studied by identifying the share of electricity costs in expenditures of households and enterprises of different energy intensity structure. The indebtedness of consumers to guaranteeing suppliers and power grid companies has been given. Effective measures to combat the indebtedness of some large guaranteeing suppliers from the district under consideration have been analyzed.

An analysis of the phylogeny of Cephaloziellaceae was carried out based on trees constructed for previously and newly obtained sequences of five genes: nuclear ITS1–2 and chloroplast trnL–F, trnG, rbcL, and psbA. Phylogenetic trees inferred from different genes are congruent for the main details; however, the position of several taxa is variable. As a result, a new phylogenetic system of the family was proposed. The narrow genus concept seems to be more appropriate for the family. Cephaloziella spinicaulis is segregated into the new genus Douiniella, the generic status for Prionolobus and Metacephalozia is confirmed, and the dubious generic status of Kymatocalyx is substantiated. The generic independence of Cylindrocolea from Cephaloziella s. str. is confirmed. The small amount of data hinders the description of two more genera from Cephaloziella s.l.

Oil and gas complex is a common name for a group of industries for the extraction, transportation and processing of oil and gas and the distribution of products of their processing. Oil and gas complex plays a significant role in the development of the economy both in the domestic and foreign markets. The article focuses on the contribution of the industry to the country’s economy, in addition, the resource base of minerals of the Russian Federation is considered. The dependence of the Russian economy on oil and gas is clearly demonstrated. The analysis of the current situation on the oil and gas market is carried out, the impact of the oil and gas complex on the economic indicators of Russia is assessed. The article examines and analyses the leading vertically integrated oil companies. This analysis allows us to see the developing and increasing indicators of companies in terms of progress.

Abstract Vitamin D as an immunomodulator has not been studied in patients with severe COVID-19. This study aimed to estimate the efficacy of vitamin D3 supplementation on cellular immunity and inflammatory markers in patients with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). A single-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial was conducted (N = 110). Patients were randomly assigned to receive a weekly oral dose of 60,000 IU of vitamin D3 followed by daily maintenance doses of 5000 IU (n = 55) or placebo (n = 55). Primary outcomes were lymphocyte counts, natural killer (NK) and natural killer T (NKT) cell counts, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and serum levels of inflammatory markers on 7th day of treatment. On day 7, patients in the vitamin D3 group displayed significantly higher NK and NKT cell counts and NLR than those in the placebo group did. The mortality rate (37% vs 50%, P = 0.16), need for mechanical ventilation (63% vs 69%, P = 0.58), incidence of nosocomial infection (60% vs 41%, P = 0.05) did not significantly differ between groups. Vitamin D3 supplementation, compared with placebo, significantly increased lymphocyte counts, but did not translate into reduced mortality in ICU. Lophocolea sikkimensis, a little-known Sino-Himalayan species, was collected in North Vietnam and its taxonomic position was identified by molecular genetic techniques. The species is characterized by generally narrowly pointed leaves, which are not seen in other representatives of Lophocoleaceae. We found that it belongs to the recently described genus Cryptolophocolea, although it is clearly morphologically dissimilar to other members of the genus. We propose a corresponding nomenclature combination: Cryptolophocolea sikkimensis comb. nov. This species is the only one in its genus with a predominantly Sino-Himalayan distribution; the vast majority of congeners are distributed in the Southern Hemisphere (mostly in Australasia). Reports of this species in Vietnam further confirm the close phytogeographic relationships of the flora of northern Indochina with those of the Sino-Himalayas and suggest that this species is found in other parts of the Hoang Lien Range and the southern Hengduan Range.

Lophozia pallida, the commonly used name for a rare and little-known Sino-Himalayan species, was found to be a synonym of Lophozia dubia, a forgotten and previously misinterpreted species known in Indonesia. A comparative study of herbarium materials and our collections made it possible to ‘extend’ the distribution of Lophozia s. str. southward to Indonesia. The description of oil bodies from the species is provided for the first time. The position of the species in the Lophozia phylogenetic system demonstrates its clear differences from the morphologically similar Lophozia guttulata and its phylogenetic relationship with the Japanese–Korean Lophozia koreana.

Single-cell cyanobacteria, being an integral part of picoplankton in marine ecosystems, have been suggested to be important contributors to primary production and carbon cycles in the global ocean. The spatial distribution, abundance and diversity of natural communities of picocyanobacteria (PC) in estuaries of Khatanga, Indigirka and Kolyma rivers and adjacent shelves of the Laptev and East Siberian seas were studied in September 2017. The PC concentrations were higher in the estuaries than in the shelf stations of the seas. The abundance of PC was 1.25 × 106 cells/L, 0.42 × 106 cells/L and 1.58 × 106 cells/L in the surface layer of Khatanga, Indigirka and Kolyma estuaries, respectively. The contribution of PC to total autumn picophytoplankton abundance averaged 6% and 3% in the Khatanga and Indigirka estuaries and reached 5% in the Kolyma estuary. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and ITS region clone libraries revealed picocyanobacterial sequences related to marine Synechococcus subclusters 5.1-I, 5.2 and 5.3. Of the phylotypes from Synechococcus S5.1-I and S5.2 that were found, only several were discovered earlier, while the remaining clones were unique. Two groups of phylotypes (clades A and E) were found that were not closely similar to those previously described in both marine and freshwater habitats. It can be expected that a more detailed study of the phytoplankton of the Arctic seas will further expand our understanding of the diversity of these key components of the food chains of oceanic biocenoses.

The advancement of neutrino observatories has sparked a surge in multi-messenger astronomy. Multiple neutrino associations among blazars are reported while neutrino production sites are located within their central (sub)parsecs. Yet, many questions remain on the nature of those processes. The next generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) is uniquely positioned for these studies, as its high frequency and resolution can probe both the accretion disk region and the parsec-scale jet. This opens up new opportunities for connecting the two regions and unraveling the proton acceleration and neutrino production in blazars. We outline observational strategies for ngEHT and highlight what it can contribute to the multi-messenger study of blazars.

Background. The lack of effective etiotropic therapy for COVID-19 has prompted researchers around the globe to seekr various methods of SARS-CoV-2 elimination, including the use of convalescent plasma. Aim. The aim of this work was to study the safety and efficacy of the convalescence plasma treatment of severe COVID-19 using the plasma containing specific antibodies to the receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 S protein in a titer of at least 1:1000. Methods. A single-center, randomized, prospective clinical study was performed at the FRCC FMBA of Russia with the participation of 86 patients who were stratified in two groups. The first group included 20 critically ill patients who were on mechanical ventilation the second group included 66 patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 and with spontaneous respiration. The patients in the second group were randomized into two cohorts in a ratio of 2:1. In the first cohort (46 patients), pathogen-reduced convalescent plasma was transfused (twice, 320 ml each), in the second cohort (20 patients) a similar amount of non-immune freshly frozen plasma was transfused to the patients. Results. The use of plasma of convalescents in patients with severe COVID-19 being on mechanical ventilation does not affect the disease outcome in these patients. The mortality rate in this group was 60%, which corresponds to the average mortality of COVID patients on mechanical ventilation in our hospital. In the second group, clinical improvement was detected in 75% and 51%, for convalescent and non-immune plasma, respectively. Of the 46 people who received convalescent plasma, three patients (6.5%) were transferred to mechanical ventilation, two of them died. In the group receiving non-immune plasma, the need for mechanical ventilation also arose in three patients (15%), of which two died. The hospital mortality in the group of convalescent plasma was 4.3%, which is significantly lower than the average COVID-19 hospital mortality at our Center (6.73%) and more than two times lower than the hospital mortality in the control group (n=150), matched by age and by the disease severity. Conclusions. Thus, we demonstrated a relative safety of convalescent plasma transfusion and the effectiveness of such therapy for COVID-19 at least in terms of the survival of hospitalized patients with severe respiratory failure without mechanical ventilation. In the absence of bioengineered neutralizing antibodies and effective etiotropic therapy, the use of hyperimmune convalescent plasma is the simplest and most effective method of specific etiopathogenetic therapy of severe forms of COVID-19.

Background. Providing an efficient care to the patients of the most severely affected category ICU patients has become one of the serious problems appearing in the COVID-19 pandemics. A typical patients clinical portrait in ICUs of COVID centers is very similar in different countries, however, the key to improve the treatment results for critically ill patients has not yet been found. Currently, 160 patients have been treated in the ICU of the FRCC of the FMBA of Russia. To May 16, 2020, the lethality in the ICU was 48.9% by the closed cases, the lethality among the patients on ventilation was 57.9%. The aim of the study is to identify predictors of the severe pneumonia caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and to describe the clinical characteristics of patients admitted to an intensive care unit of the COVID-center of the Federal Research Clinical Center of FMBA of Russia. Methods. In this report, we describe the clinical, laboratory and instrumental data of 70 patients admitted to the ICU, and discuss the found predictors of the severe COVID-19 pneumonia course. Results. The following factors have been determined which contribute to the development of the severe course of the disease and to the risk of the unfavorable outcome: male gender, age older than 70.5 years, initial lymphocytopenia of lower than 0.98109/l, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio of higher than 7.75, D-dimer level of higher than 0.85 g/ml, IL-6 of higher than 184.7 pg/ml, procalcitonin of higher than 0.22 ng/ml, hyperglycemia of higher than 9 mmol/l, signs of myocardial damage (high-sensitive troponin Т of higher than 22 pg/ml, echocardiography data), signs of the presence of a secondary bacterial infection and a severe vitamin D deficiency (lower than 9.9 ng/ml). The pathophysiological basics for the contribution of each factor to the severe course of the disease are provided. Conclusions. Clinical features of the patients change in course of pandemia. These influenced by changes in treatment approaches and new discoveries in disease pathophysiology. Above mentioned predictors of severe course of disease is partly modifiable and we are able to influence them and perhaps achieve better results in treatment of severe patients with COVID-19

It has been found in experiments at the SURA mid-latitude heating facility that the modification of the ionospheric F2 layer by powerful HF radio waves gives rise to artificial injection of energetic electrons from the Earth’s radiation belt into the atmosphere. The spectral, energy, and spatial characteristics of such an injection are presented in the paper. It is significant that the energetic electrons excite the atoms and molecules of the atmosphere to Rydberg energy levels, followed by the transition of the excited atoms and molecules to lower energy states, accompanied by the radiation of the microwave electromagnetic emissions. It has been shown that the artificial injection of energetic electrons can be considered as an independent powerful source of generation of secondary artificial turbulence, the effect of which manifests itself at ionospheric and mesospheric heights both near the heating facility and at a large distance from it up to a thousand or more kilometers. Examples of such generation are given.

The study analyzes the expression of protein genes involved in intracellular signaling pathways associated with a profibrotic response, activation of epithelial-mesenchymal and endothelial-mesenchymal transitions, in modeling tuberculous granulomatosis and pharmaceutical effects. Material and methods. The study was performed on male BALB/c mice aged two months and weighing 18–22 g. Generalized tuberculous granulomatosis was simulated by a single intravenous (retro-orbital) injection of 0.5 mg BCG vaccine in 0.2 ml of isotonic aqueous NaCl solution (SS), after 4 months a part of mice started to receive treatment drugs, after 2 months the animals were sacrificed by decapitation (6 months after BCG vaccine administration) and their lung tissues were collected. Mice were divided into 6 groups, 5 males in each: intact, which were intravenously into the retro-orbital sinus injected with 0.2 ml SS (C); infected with BCG and receiving SS intraperitoneal injections (BS); infected with BCG and received intraperitoneal injections of isonicotinic acid hydrazide solution (INAH) (BI); infected with BCG and received intraperitoneal injections of dextrazide solution (conjugate of 40 kDa oxidized dextran and INAH) (BD); infected with BCG and received intraperitoneal or inhalation injections of solution of molecular-nanosomal pharmaceutical compositions of oxidized dextran (MNPC) (BMP and BMH, respectively). Finally, the expression of mRNA of matrix metalloproteinase 9, type III procollagen, TGF-β, and transcription factors ZEB1 and Snai1 was determined by real-time PCR in mice lung tissue. Results. The modeling of generalized tuberculous granulomatosis was found to be accompanied by the induction of epithelial-mesenchymal transition and the activation of profibrotic processes, which after 6 months was manifested in increase of the type III collagen α1-chain and TGF-β mRNA expression. Administration of traditional (INAH) and original (dextrazide, MNPC) preparations with anti-tuberculosis activity within two months has inhibitory activity of varying severity in relation to various markers of these processes.

Calypogeia is a genus in Pacific Asia that is difficult to classify taxonomically. These difficulties arise from (1) considering the presence of oil bodies as anatomical characters for taxonomic differentiation, (2) the wide occurrence of sibling, semicryptic and geographical vicariant taxa and (3) the inevitable need to organize new datasets for molecular genetic revision of the genus. The present study uses an integrative approach, including molecular genetic, morphological, chorological and ecological methods, to understand the taxonomy of the genus in Amphi-Pacific Asia. As a result, a set of new-to-science taxa was revealed, and the suite of morphological features necessary for reliable discrimination of the taxa was revised. These results are based on the study of a large set of ‘fresh’ collections suitable for molecular analysis and morphological comparison and include data on oil bodies. The most basal branch in Calypogeia s.l. is segregated into a new genus, Asperifolia. Descriptions of the new taxa and the key to Calypogeia in Vietnam are provided.

Intraoperative aneurysmal rupture (IAR) is one of the most dramatic complications of intracranial intervention. Its frequency, depending on the aneurysms localization and anatomical features, may reach 50%. IAR leads to the increase of unfavorable outcomes by 1.53 times. There exists a variety of techniques aimed to reduce the frequency of this complication, however, all of them have essential limitations. The review presents analyses of the basic risk factors for IAR and techniques of its prevention, as well as modern approaches directed at the alleviation of this complications consequences.

Abstract It has been shown previously that in a relativistic constituent-quark model, predictions for the electromagnetic form factor of the $$\pi $$ π meson match not only experimental data but also, in the limit of large momentum transfers, the asymptotics derived from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This is remarkable since no parameters are introduced to provide for this infrared-ultraviolet link. Here, we follow this approach, going beyond QCD. We obtain numerical relations between the gauge coupling constant, the decay constant and the charge radius of the pion-like meson in general strongly-coupled theories. These relations are compared to published lattice results for SU(2) gauge theory with two fermion flavours, and a good agreement is demonstrated. Further applications of the approach, to be explored elsewhere, include composite Higgs and dark-matter models.

Aim: to perform a comparative analysis of the effi cacy of the inhaled and intravenous delivery of equivalent doses of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) in rabbits according to the standard model of bleomycin pulmonary fi brosis.Materials and methods. After bronchoscopic instillation of bleomycin, 5 rabbits received intravenous transplantation of 2 × 106 allogeneic BMMSCs, other 5 rabbits – 2 × 107 MSCs inhaled via compressor nebulizer; control healthy and bleomycin group included 5 animals each.Results. Both groups treated with BMMSCs had a signifi cantly lower Ashcroft fi brosis index than the bleomycin control group. Expression of collagen in lung tissue in all groups with bleomycin injury was superior to healthy controls, but in animals underwent intravenous BMMSC transplantation collagen score was 0.74 points, and in inhaled treated group – 0.51 points, while in bleomycin controls – 2.1 point. Levels of TNF-α and TGF-β1 in BAL fl uids tended to decrease in treatment groups, but did not differ signifi cantly from control. A similar picture was observed in the cytological analysis of BAL.Conclusion. In general, both methods of delivering of BMMSCs to the lungs demonstrated similar therapeutic effects in inhibiting the development of experimental fi brosis, indicating that both intravenous and inhalational way of introduction can be used for subsequent clinical studies.

This survey is the first to explore the seasonal cycle of microbial eukaryote diversity (Micromonas polaris was constantly present throughout the September–June period in the PE community. The obtained results determine the seasonal dynamics of picoplankton in order to improve our understanding of their role in polar ecosystems.

Abstract Starting from a successful model of the $$\pi $$ π -meson electromagnetic form factor, we calculate a similar form factor, $$F_{K}(Q^{2})$$ F K ( Q 2 ) , of the charged K meson for a wide range of the momentum transfer squared, $$Q^{2}$$ Q 2 . The only remaining free parameter is to be determined from the measurements of the K-meson charge radius, $$r_{K}$$ r K . We fit this single parameter to the published data of the NA-7 experiment which measured $$F_{K}(Q^{2})$$ F K ( Q 2 ) at $$Q^{2}\rightarrow 0$$ Q 2 → 0 and determine our preferred range of $$r_{K}$$ r K , which happens to be close to recent lattice results. Still, the accuracy in the determination of $$r_{K}$$ r K is poor. However, future measurements of the K-meson electromagnetic form factor at $$Q^{2}\lesssim 5.5$$ Q 2 ≲ 5.5 GeV $$^{2}$$ 2 , scheduled in Jefferson Laboratory for 2017, will test our approach and will reduce the uncertainty in $$r_{K}$$ r K significantly.

Abstract Operational taxonomic units 94%–95% similar to the known Pedinophyceae were found as a result of high‐through sequencing of 18S rDNA V4 amplicons of environmental DNA from the summer picophytoplankton samples from the White Sea. Partial sequence of a ribosomal operon (the 5,298 bp includes partial 18S and 28S rDNA, complete 5.8S rDNA, ITS1, and ITS2 sequences) and a partial 2,112 bp chloroplast 23S rDNA sequence White Sea Pedinophyceae was amplified from metagenomic DNA by specific primers and sequenced. A new phylotype was designated as uncultured Pedinophyceae WS. On Chlorophyta phylogenetic trees the discovered phylotype occupies a basal position in the Marsupiomonadales clade. The synapomorphic base substitutions in rRNA hairpins confirm the relationship of Pedinophyceae WS to Marsupiomonadales and its difference from known genera of the order. The obtained results extend knowledge of picophytoplankton diversity in subarctic waters.

The Nt-4/1 protein of unknown function has been shown to be alpha-helical and predominantly expressed in conductive tissues of tobacco plants. So far, obvious Nt-4/1 orthologs were found only in flowering plants. We report the analysis of 4/1 genes and the encoded proteins of lower land plants (Morozov et al., 2015) [1]. In this data article, we present two phylogenetic trees of angiosperm 4/1 proteins together with orthologs from liverworts, lycophytes, ferns and gymnosperms.

An early-branched moss Polytrichum commune is a widely accepted model object for ecological, environmental, physiological, and genetic studies. Its mitochondrial genome has been sequenced and annotated. The genome contains 67 genes in total and has a length equal to 114,831 bp, which exceeds the length of most known mitochondrial genomes for mosses. A phylogenetic tree based on 33 coding sequences of mitochondrial genome was constructed, and the pairwise identity of whole mitogenome sequences was estimated for 44 Bryophyta species. Based on the analysis of pairwise identity, it was shown that mitogenomes of Tetraphis pellucida and Buxbaumia aphylla sufficiently differ from those of other Bryophyta species. The first known Bryophyta mitogenome rearrangement was identified in Pogonatum inflexum within Polytrichopsida. Based on the intergenic repeats occurrence in 44 bryophyte mitochondrial genomes and available data on repetitive elements content in other Viridiplantae groups, it was noted for the first time that greater stability of the moss’s mitogenomes is probably associated mainly with the absence of long (>1 kb) repeats. The phenomenon of absence of the intergenic repetitive elements in the terminal clades species was discovered.

The taxonomic diversity center of Schistochilopsis is in East Asia, where the genus also shows the highest genetic diversity and morphological plasticity. The integrative survey of Schistochilopsis in East Asia was the main goal of the present account. Plant materials were obtained from recent collections made by authors in various parts of amphi-Pacific Asia; several types of specimens were also studied. The study includes phylogenetic reconstructions from nuclear ITS1,2, chloroplast trnL and trnG sequences, and anatomo-morphological, biogeographical, and taxonomical analyses. As a result, it was concluded that S. obscura should be transferred to Lophozia s. str. and S. grandiretis to the newly described genus Protochilopsis. Lophozia boliviensis was found to be part of the Andean–Sino-Himalayan taxon belonging to Schistochilopsis. The species status of S. hyperarctica and S. opacifolia was not confirmed. Substantial genetic variation is observed within S. incisa with possible cryptic sympatric distributed entities. The taxonomical section of the paper provides a discussion on the status, distinctive morphological traits, distribution, and ecology supplemented with the morphological description for poorly understood taxa. In the vast majority of cases, the illustrations and photographs made from the types and living material are provided.

The White Sea is a unique basin combining features of temperate and arctic seas. The current state of its biocenoses can serve as a reference point in assessing the expected desalination of the ocean as a result of climate change. A metagenomic study of under-ice ice photosynthetic picoeukaryotes (PPEs) was undertaken by Illumina high-throughput sequencing of the 18S rDNA V4 region from probes collected in March 2013 and 2014. The PPE biomass in samples was 0.03−0.17 µg C·L−1 and their abundance varied from 10 cells·mL−1 to 140 cells·mL−1. There were representatives of 16 algae genera from seven classes and three supergroups, but Chlorophyta, especially Mamiellophyceae, dominated. The most represented genera were Micromonas and Mantoniella. For the first time, the predominance of Mantoniella (in four samples) and Bolidophyceae (in one sample) was observed in under-ice water. It can be assumed that a change in environmental conditions will lead to a considerable change in the structure of arctic PPE communities.

Trans-acting small interfering RNAs (ta-siRNAs) are transcribed from protein non-coding genomic TAS loci and belong to a plant-specific class of endogenous small RNAs. These siRNAs have been found to regulate gene expression in most taxa including seed plants, gymnosperms, ferns and mosses. In this study, bioinformatic and experimental PCR-based approaches were used as tools to analyze TAS3 and TAS6 loci in transcriptomes and genomic DNAs from representatives of evolutionary distant non-vascular plant taxa such as Bryophyta, Marchantiophyta and Anthocerotophyta. We revealed previously undiscovered TAS3 loci in plant classes Sphagnopsida and Anthocerotopsida, as well as TAS6 loci in Bryophyta classes Tetraphidiopsida, Polytrichopsida, Andreaeopsida and Takakiopsida. These data further unveil the evolutionary pathway of the miR390-dependent TAS3 loci in land plants. We also identified charophyte alga sequences coding for SUPPRESSOR OF GENE SILENCING 3 (SGS3), which is required for generation of ta-siRNAs in plants, and hypothesized that the appearance of TAS3-related sequences could take place at a very early step in evolutionary transition from charophyte algae to an earliest common ancestor of land plants.

The mitochondrial genome of moss Mielichhoferia elongata has been sequenced and assembled with Spades genome assembler. It consists of 100,342 base pairs and has practically the same gene set and order as in other known bryophyte chondriomes. The genome contains 66 genes including three rRNAs, 24 tRNAs, and 40 conserved mitochondrial proteins genes. Unlike the majority of previously sequenced bryophyte mitogenomes, it lacks the functional nad7 gene. The phylogenetic reconstruction and scrutiny analysis of the primary structure of nad7 gene carried out in this study suggest its independent pseudogenization in different bryophyte lineages. Evaluation of the microsatellite (simple sequence repeat) content of the M. elongata mitochondrial genome indicates that it could be used as a tool in further studies as a phylogenetic marker. The strongly supported phylogenetic tree presented here, derived from 33 protein coding sequences of 40 bryophyte species, is consistent with other reconstructions based on a number of different data sets.
