Visual impairment affects the ability of people to live a life like normal people. Such people face challenges in performing activities of daily living, such as reading, writing, traveling and participating in social gatherings. Many traditional approaches are available to help visually impaired people; however, these are limited in obtaining contextually rich environmental information necessary for independent living. In order to overcome this limitation, this paper introduces a novel wearable vision assistance system that has a hat-mounted camera connected to a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (8GB RAM) with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to deliver real-time feedback to a user through a sound beep mechanism. The key features of this system include a user-friendly procedure for the recognition of new people or objects through a one-click process that allows users to add data on new individuals and objects for later detection, enhancing the accuracy of the recognition over time. The system provides detailed descriptions of objects in the user's environment using a large vision language model (LVLM). In addition, it incorporates a distance sensor that activates a beeping sound using a buzzer as soon as the user is about to collide with an object, helping to ensure safety while navigating their environment. A comprehensive evaluation is carried out to evaluate the proposed AI-based solution against traditional support techniques. Quantum Machine Learning (QML) has shown promise in diverse applications such as environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and financial modeling. However, the practical application of QML faces challenges, such as the limited availability of quantum hardware and the complexity of integrating quantum algorithms with classical systems. This paper introduces a novel Bayesian approach using Quantum Bayesian Networks (QBNs) to classify imbalanced datasets, focusing on differentiating ``oil-spill'' from ``non-spill'' classes in satellite-derived data. By employing QBNs, which combine probabilistic reasoning with quantum state preparation, we effectively address the challenge of integrating quantum enhancements with classical machine learning architectures. While the integration improves key performance metrics, it also uncovers areas for refinement, highlighting the need for customized strategies to address specific challenges and optimize outcomes. Articulated 3D object generation is fundamental for creating realistic, functional, and interactable virtual assets which are not simply static. We introduce MeshArt, a hierarchical transformer-based approach to generate articulated 3D meshes with clean, compact geometry, reminiscent of human-crafted 3D models. We approach articulated mesh generation in a part-by-part fashion across two stages. First, we generate a high-level articulation-aware object structure; then, based on this structural information, we synthesize each part's mesh faces. Key to our approach is modeling both articulation structures and part meshes as sequences of quantized triangle embeddings, leading to a unified hierarchical framework with transformers for autoregressive generation. Object part structures are first generated as their bounding primitives and articulation modes; a second transformer, guided by these articulation structures, then generates each part's mesh triangles. To ensure coherency among generated parts, we introduce structure-guided conditioning that also incorporates local part mesh connectivity. Full-vectorial finite difference method with perfectly matched layers boundaries is used to identify the single mode operation region of submicron rib waveguides fabricated using sili-con-on-insulator material system. Achieving high mode power confinement factors is emphasized while maintaining the single mode operation. As opposed to the case of large cross-section rib waveguides, theoretical single mode conditions have been demonstrated to hold for sub-micron waveguides with accuracy approaching 100%. Both, the deeply and the shallowly etched rib waveguides have been considered and the single mode condition for entire sub-micrometer range is presented while adhering to design specific mode confinement requirements.

Technological advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled the development of large vision language models (LVLMs) that are trained on millions of paired image and text samples. Subsequent research efforts have demonstrated great potential of LVLMs to achieve high performance in medical imaging use cases (e.g., radiology report generation), but there remain barriers that hinder the ability to deploy these solutions broadly. These include the cost of extensive computational requirements for developing large scale models, expertise in the development of sophisticated AI models, and the difficulty in accessing substantially large, high-quality datasets that adequately represent the population in which the LVLM solution is to be deployed. The HOPPR Medical-Grade Platform addresses these barriers by providing powerful computational infrastructure, a suite of foundation models on top of which developers can fine-tune for their specific use cases, and a robust quality management system that sets a standard for evaluating fine-tuned models for deployment in clinical settings. The HOPPR Platform has access to millions of imaging studies and text reports sourced from hundreds of imaging centers from diverse populations to pretrain foundation models and enable use case-specific cohorts for fine-tuning. All data are deidentified and securely stored for HIPAA compliance. Additionally, developers can securely host models on the HOPPR platform and access them via an API to make inferences using these models within established clinical workflows. Overfitting remains a significant challenge in deep learning, often arising from data outliers, noise, and limited training data. To address this, we propose Divide2Conquer (D2C), a novel technique to mitigate overfitting. D2C partitions the training data into multiple subsets and trains identical models independently on each subset. To balance model generalization and subset-specific learning, the model parameters are periodically aggregated and averaged during training. This process enables the learning of robust patterns while minimizing the influence of outliers and noise. Empirical evaluations on benchmark datasets across diverse deep-learning tasks demonstrate that D2C significantly enhances generalization performance, particularly with larger datasets. Our analysis includes evaluations of decision boundaries, loss curves, and other performance metrics, highlighting D2C's effectiveness both as a standalone technique and in combination with other overfitting reduction methods. We further provide a rigorous mathematical justification for D2C's underlying principles and examine its applicability across multiple domains. Finally, we explore the trade-offs associated with D2C and propose strategies to address them, offering a holistic view of its strengths and limitations. This paper aims to uncover needs of adult learners when using pedagogical technologies such as intelligent tutoring systems. Further, our aim with this work is to understand the usability challenges when deploying tutors at scale within the adult learning audience. As educational technologies become more ubiquitous within k-12 education, this paper aims to bridge the gap in understanding on how adult users might utilize intelligent tutors. In pursuit of this, we built four intelligent tutors, and deployed them to 110 classrooms at a state technical college for an entire academic year. Following this deployment, we conducted focus groups amongst users to gather data to understand how learners perceived the optional educational technology during their academic journey. We further analyzed this data using foundational HCI methodologies to extract leanings and design recommendations on how developers might craft educational technologies for adoption at scale for the adult learning population.

This study aims to mitigate these biases and enhance QA analysis by applying a path-length correction (PLC) correction, followed by singular value decomposition (SVD)-based deconvolution, to angiograms obtained through both in-silico and in-vitro methods. We utilized DSA data from in-silico and in-vitro patient-specific intracranial aneurysm models. To remove projection bias, PLC for various views were developed by co-registering the pre-existing 3D vascular geometry mask with the DSA projections, followed by ray tracing to determine paths across 3D vessel structures. These maps were used to normalize the logarithmic angiographic images, correcting for projection-induced foreshortening across different angles. Subsequently, we focused on eliminating injection bias by analyzing the corrected angiograms under varied projection views, injection rates, and flow conditions. Regions of interest at the aneurysm dome and inlet were placed to extract Time Density Curves for the lesion and the arterial input function, respectively. Using three standard SVD methodologies, we extracted the aneurysm Impulse Response function (IRF) and its associated parameters Peak Height (PHIRF), Area Under the Curve (AUCIRF), and Mean Transit Time (MTT). Our methodology employing PLC and SVD-based deconvolution ensures reliable quantitative angiographic measurements across varying conditions, supporting consistent assessments of disease severity and treatment efficacy. With the recent exhibited strength of generative diffusion models, an open research question is if images generated by these models can be used to learn better visual representations. While this generative data expansion may suffice for easier visual tasks, we explore its efficacy on a more difficult discriminative task: clothes-changing person re-identification (CC-ReID). CC-ReID aims to match people appearing in non-overlapping cameras, even when they change their clothes across cameras. Not only are current CC-ReID models constrained by the limited diversity of clothing in current CC-ReID datasets, but generating additional data that retains important personal features for accurate identification is a current challenge. To address this issue we propose DLCR, a novel data expansion framework that leverages pre-trained diffusion and large language models (LLMs) to accurately generate diverse images of individuals in varied attire. We generate additional data for five benchmark CC-ReID datasets (PRCC, CCVID, LaST, VC-Clothes, and LTCC) and increase their clothing diversity by 10X, totaling over 2.1M images generated. DLCR employs diffusion-based text-guided inpainting, conditioned on clothing prompts constructed using LLMs, to generate synthetic data that only modifies a subject's clothes while preserving their personally identifiable features. With this massive increase in data, we introduce two novel strategies - progressive learning and test-time prediction refinement - that respectively reduce training time and further boosts CC-ReID performance. On the PRCC dataset, we obtain a large top-1 accuracy improvement of 11.3% by training CAL, a previous state of the art (SOTA) method, with DLCR-generated data. The unpredictability of random numbers is fundamental to both digital security and applications that fairly distribute resources. However, existing random number generators have limitations-the generation processes cannot be fully traced, audited, and certified to be unpredictable. The algorithmic steps used in pseudorandom number generators are auditable, but they cannot guarantee that their outputs were a priori unpredictable given knowledge of the initial seed. Device-independent quantum random number generators can ensure that the source of randomness was unknown beforehand, but the steps used to extract the randomness are vulnerable to tampering. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a fully traceable random number generation protocol based on device-independent techniques. Our protocol extracts randomness from unpredictable non-local quantum correlations, and uses distributed intertwined hash chains to cryptographically trace and verify the extraction process. This protocol is at the heart of a public traceable and certifiable quantum randomness beacon that we have launched. Over the first 40 days of operation, we completed the protocol 7434 out of 7454 attempts -- a success rate of 99.7%. Each time the protocol succeeded, the beacon emitted a pulse of 512 bits of traceable randomness. The bits are certified to be uniform with error times actual success probability bounded by $2^{-64}$. Intraoperative 2D quantitative angiography (QA) for intracranial aneurysms (IAs) has accuracy challenges due to the variability of hand injections. Despite the success of singular value decomposition (SVD) algorithms in reducing biases in computed tomography perfusion (CTP), their application in 2D QA has not been extensively explored. This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating the potential of SVD-based deconvolution methods in 2D QA, particularly in addressing the variability of injection durations. The study included three internal carotid aneurysm (ICA) cases. Virtual angiograms were generated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for three physiologically relevant inlet velocities to simulate contrast media injection durations. Time-density curves (TDCs) were produced for both the inlet and aneurysm dome. Various SVD variants, including standard SVD (sSVD) with and without classical Tikhonov regularization, block-circulant SVD (bSVD), and oscillation index SVD (oSVD), were applied to virtual angiograms. The method was applied on virtual angiograms to recover the aneurysmal dome impulse response function (IRF) and extract flow related parameters such as Peak Height PHIRF, Area Under the Curve AUCIRF, and Mean transit time MTT. Furthermore, we found that SVD can effectively reduce QA parameter variability across various injection durations, enhancing the potential of QA analysis parameters in neurovascular disease diagnosis and treatment. Implementing SVD-based deconvolution techniques in QA analysis can enhance the precision and reliability of neurovascular diagnostics by effectively reducing the impact of injection duration on hemodynamic parameters.

Chest X-rays (X-ray images) have been proven to be effective for the diagnosis of chest diseases, including Pneumonia, Lung Opacity, and COVID-19. However, relying on traditional medical methods for diagnosis from X-ray images is prone to delays and inaccuracies because the medical personnel who evaluate the X-ray images may have preconceived biases. For this reason, researchers have proposed the use of deep learning-based techniques to facilitate the diagnosis process. The preeminent method is the use of sophisticated Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In this paper, we propose a novel detection model named \textbf{AttCDCNet} for the task of X-ray image diagnosis, enhancing the popular DenseNet121 model by adding an attention block to help the model focus on the most relevant regions, using focal loss as a loss function to overcome the imbalance of the dataset problem, and utilizing depth-wise convolution to reduce the parameters to make the model lighter. Through extensive experimental evaluations, the proposed model demonstrates exceptional performance, showing better results than the original DenseNet121. The proposed model achieved an accuracy, precision and recall of 94.94%, 95.14% and 94.53%, respectively, on the COVID-19 Radiography Dataset.

The linear canonical transform (LCT) serves as a powerful generalization of the Fourier transform (FT), encapsulating various integral transforms within a unified framework. This versatility has made it a cornerstone in fields such as signal processing, optics, and quantum mechanics. Extending this concept to quaternion algebra, the Quaternion Fourier Transform (QFT) emerged, enriching the analysis of multidimensional and complex-valued signals. The Quaternion Linear Canonical Transform (QLCT), a further generalization, has now positioned itself as a central tool across various disciplines, including applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, and statistics. In this paper, we introduce the Two Dimensional Quaternion Linear Canonical Transform (2DQLCT) as a novel framework for probability modeling. By leveraging the 2DQLCT, we aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding of probability distributions, particularly in the context of multi-dimensional and complex-valued signals. Despite tremendous progress in developing deep-learning-based weather forecasting systems, their design space, including the impact of different design choices, is yet to be well understood. This paper aims to fill this knowledge gap by systematically analyzing these choices including architecture, problem formulation, pretraining scheme, use of image-based pretrained models, loss functions, noise injection, multi-step inputs, additional static masks, multi-step finetuning (including larger stride models), as well as training on a larger dataset. We study fixed-grid architectures such as UNet, fully convolutional architectures, and transformer-based models, along with grid-invariant architectures, including graph-based and operator-based models. Our results show that fixed-grid architectures outperform grid-invariant architectures, indicating a need for further architectural developments in grid-invariant models such as neural operators. We therefore propose a hybrid system that combines the strong performance of fixed-grid models with the flexibility of grid-invariant architectures. We further show that multi-step fine-tuning is essential for most deep-learning models to work well in practice, which has been a common practice in the past. Pretraining objectives degrade performance in comparison to supervised training, while image-based pretrained models provide useful inductive biases in some cases in comparison to training the model from scratch. Interestingly, we see a strong positive effect of using a larger dataset when training a smaller model as compared to training on a smaller dataset for longer. Larger models, on the other hand, primarily benefit from just an increase in the computational budget. We believe that these results will aid in the design of better weather forecasting systems in the future.

Recent works have successfully applied Large Language Models (LLMs) to function modeling tasks. However, the reasons behind this success remain unclear. In this work, we propose a new evaluation framework to comprehensively assess LLMs' function modeling abilities. By adopting a Bayesian perspective of function modeling, we discover that LLMs are relatively weak in understanding patterns in raw data, but excel at utilizing prior knowledge about the domain to develop a strong understanding of the underlying function. Our findings offer new insights about the strengths and limitations of LLMs in the context of function modeling.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are rapidly becoming commodity components of larger software systems. This poses natural security and privacy problems: poisoned data retrieved from one component can change the model's behavior and compromise the entire system, including coercing the model to spread confidential data to untrusted components. One promising approach is to tackle this problem at the system level via dynamic information flow (aka taint) tracking. Unfortunately, the traditional approach of propagating the most restrictive input label to the output is too conservative for applications where LLMs operate on inputs retrieved from diverse sources. In this paper, we propose a novel, more permissive approach to propagate information flow labels through LLM queries. The key idea behind our approach is to propagate only the labels of the samples that were influential in generating the model output and to eliminate the labels of unnecessary input. We implement and investigate the effectiveness of two variations of this approach, based on (i) prompt-based retrieval augmentation, and (ii) a $k$-nearest-neighbors language model. We compare these with the baseline of an introspection-based influence estimator that directly asks the language model to predict the output label. The results obtained highlight the superiority of our prompt-based label propagator, which improves the label in more than 85% of the cases in an LLM agent setting. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more popular in various sectors, offering many benefits, yet introducing significant challenges to privacy and safety. This paper investigates state-of-the-art solutions for detecting and tracking quadrotor UAVs to address these concerns. Cutting-edge deep learning models, specifically the YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 series, are evaluated for their performance in identifying UAVs accurately and quickly. Additionally, robust tracking systems, BoT-SORT and Byte Track, are integrated to ensure reliable monitoring even under challenging conditions. Our tests on the DUT dataset reveal that while YOLOv5 models generally outperform YOLOv8 in detection accuracy, the YOLOv8 models excel in recognizing less distinct objects, demonstrating their adaptability and advanced capabilities. Furthermore, BoT-SORT demonstrated superior performance over Byte Track, achieving higher IoU and lower center error in most cases, indicating more accurate and stable tracking. This study investigates the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for improved depression detection from users social media data. Through the use of fine-tuned GPT 3.5 Turbo 1106 and LLaMA2-7B models and a sizable dataset from earlier studies, we were able to identify depressed content in social media posts with a high accuracy of nearly 96.0 percent. The comparative analysis of the obtained results with the relevant studies in the literature shows that the proposed fine-tuned LLMs achieved enhanced performance compared to existing state of the-art systems. This demonstrates the robustness of LLM-based fine-tuned systems to be used as potential depression detection systems. Network slicing in 5G and the future 6G networks will enable the creation of multiple virtualized networks on a shared physical infrastructure. This innovative approach enables the provision of tailored networks to accommodate specific business types or industry users, thus delivering more customized and efficient services. However, the shared memory and cache in network slicing introduce security vulnerabilities that have yet to be fully addressed. In this paper, we introduce a reinforcement learning-based side-channel cache attack framework specifically designed for network slicing environments. Unlike traditional cache attack methods, our framework leverages reinforcement learning to dynamically identify and exploit cache locations storing sensitive information, such as authentication keys and user registration data. We assume that one slice network is compromised and demonstrate how the attacker can induce another shared slice to send registration requests, thereby estimating the cache locations of critical data. By formulating the cache timing channel attack as a reinforcement learning-driven guessing game between the attack slice and the victim slice, our model efficiently explores possible actions to pinpoint memory blocks containing sensitive information. Experimental results showcase the superiority of our approach, achieving a success rate of approximately 95\% to 98\% in accurately identifying the storage locations of sensitive data. In Generalized Zero-Shot Learning (GZSL), we aim to recognize both seen and unseen categories using a model trained only on seen categories. In computer vision, this translates into a classification problem, where knowledge from seen categories is transferred to unseen categories by exploiting the relationships between visual features and available semantic information, such as text corpora or manual annotations. However, learning this joint distribution is costly and requires one-to-one training with corresponding semantic information. We present a reversed conditional Diffusion-based model (RevCD) that mitigates this issue by generating semantic features synthesized from visual inputs by leveraging Diffusion models' conditional mechanisms. Our RevCD model consists of a cross Hadamard-Addition embedding of a sinusoidal time schedule and a multi-headed visual transformer for attention-guided embeddings. The proposed approach introduces three key innovations. First, we reverse the process of generating semantic space based on visual data, introducing a novel loss function that facilitates more efficient knowledge transfer. Second, we apply Diffusion models to zero-shot learning - a novel approach that exploits their strengths in capturing data complexity. Predicting and reasoning how a video would make a human feel is crucial for developing socially intelligent systems. Although Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have shown impressive video understanding capabilities, they tend to focus more on the semantic content of videos, often overlooking emotional stimuli. Hence, most existing MLLMs fall short in estimating viewers' emotional reactions and providing plausible explanations. To address this issue, we propose StimuVAR, a spatiotemporal Stimuli-aware framework for Video Affective Reasoning (VAR) with MLLMs. StimuVAR incorporates a two-level stimuli-aware mechanism: frame-level awareness and token-level awareness. Frame-level awareness involves sampling video frames with events that are most likely to evoke viewers' emotions. Token-level awareness performs tube selection in the token space to make the MLLM concentrate on emotion-triggered spatiotemporal regions. Furthermore, we create VAR instruction data to perform affective training, steering MLLMs' reasoning strengths towards emotional focus and thereby enhancing their affective reasoning ability. To thoroughly assess the effectiveness of VAR, we provide a comprehensive evaluation protocol with extensive metrics. StimuVAR is the first MLLM-based method for viewer-centered VAR. Experiments demonstrate its superiority in understanding viewers' emotional responses to videos and providing coherent and insightful explanations.

The emergence of digital technology has fundamentally transformed all facets of human existence, posing important queries about the safeguarding and implementation of human rights in the digital domain. The research focuses on important topics including privacy, freedom of speech, and information access. The methodology involves an extensive review of existing literature, legal frameworks, and relevant case studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between technology and human rights. The paper highlights the challenges posed by surveillance, data breaches, and the digital divide while also exploring the role of international law and policy in safeguarding digital rights. The review highlights the significance of modifying human rights frameworks for the digital era, pointing out gaps in existing research and offering recommendations for future investigations.

Current backdoor defense methods are evaluated against a single attack at a time. This is unrealistic, as powerful machine learning systems are trained on large datasets scraped from the internet, which may be attacked multiple times by one or more attackers. We demonstrate that simultaneously executed data poisoning attacks can effectively install multiple backdoors in a single model without substantially degrading clean accuracy. Furthermore, we show that existing backdoor defense methods do not effectively prevent attacks in this setting. Finally, we leverage insights into the nature of backdoor attacks to develop a new defense, BaDLoss, that is effective in the multi-attack setting. With minimal clean accuracy degradation, BaDLoss attains an average attack success rate in the multi-attack setting of 7.98% in CIFAR-10 and 10.29% in GTSRB, compared to the average of other defenses at 64.48% and 84.28% respectively.

Breast ultrasound is essential for detecting and diagnosing abnormalities, with radiology reports summarizing key findings like lesion characteristics and malignancy assessments. Extracting this critical information is challenging due to the unstructured nature of these reports, with varied linguistic styles and inconsistent formatting. While proprietary LLMs like GPT-4 are effective, they are costly and raise privacy concerns when handling protected health information. This study presents a pipeline for developing an in-house LLM to extract clinical information from radiology reports. We first use GPT-4 to create a small labeled dataset, then fine-tune a Llama3-8B model on it. Evaluated on clinician-annotated reports, our model achieves an average F1 score of 84.6%, which is on par with GPT-4. New medical treatment development requires multiple phases of clinical trials. Despite the significant human and financial costs of bringing a drug to market, less than 20% of drugs in testing will make it from the first phase to final approval. Recent literature indicates that the design of the trial protocols significantly contributes to trial performance. We investigated Clinical Trial Outcome Prediction (CTOP) using trial design documents to predict phase transitions automatically. We propose CTP-LLM, the first Large Language Model (LLM) based model for CTOP. We also introduce the PhaseTransition (PT) Dataset; which labels trials based on their progression through the regulatory process and serves as a benchmark for CTOP evaluation. Our fine-tuned GPT-3.5-based model (CTP-LLM) predicts clinical trial phase transition by analyzing the trial's original protocol texts without requiring human-selected features. CTP-LLM achieves a 67% accuracy rate in predicting trial phase transitions across all phases and a 75% accuracy rate specifically in predicting the transition from Phase~III to final approval. Our experimental performance highlights the potential of LLM-powered applications in forecasting clinical trial outcomes and assessing trial design.

In recent years, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been utilized for various applications ranging from drug discovery to network design and social networks. In many applications, it is impossible to observe some properties of the graph directly; instead, noisy and indirect measurements of these properties are available. These scenarios are coined as Graph Inverse Problems (GRIP). In this work, we introduce a framework leveraging GNNs to solve GRIPs. The framework is based on a combination of likelihood and prior terms, which are used to find a solution that fits the data while adhering to learned prior information. Specifically, we propose to combine recent deep learning techniques that were developed for inverse problems, together with GNN architectures, to formulate and solve GRIP. We study our approach on a number of representative problems that demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework.

Compared to contact fingerprint images, contactless fingerprint images exhibit four distinct characteristics: (1) they contain less noise; (2) they have fewer discontinuities in ridge patterns; (3) the ridge-valley pattern is less distinct; and (4) they pose an interoperability problem, as they lack the elastic deformation caused by pressing the finger against the capture device. These properties present significant challenges for the enhancement of contactless fingerprint images. In this study, we propose a novel contactless fingerprint identification solution that enhances the accuracy of minutiae detection through improved frequency estimation and a new region-quality-based minutia extraction algorithm. In addition, we introduce an efficient and highly accurate minutiae-based encoding and matching algorithm. We validate the effectiveness of our approach through extensive experimental testing. Our method achieves a minimum Equal Error Rate (EER) of 2.84\% on the PolyU contactless fingerprint dataset, demonstrating its superior performance compared to existing state-of-the-art techniques. The proposed fingerprint identification method exhibits notable precision and resilience, proving to be an effective and feasible solution for contactless fingerprint-based identification systems.

For decades, satellites have facilitated remote internet of things (IoT) services. However, the recent proliferation of increasingly capable sensors and a surge in the number deployed, has led to a substantial growth in the volume of data that needs to be transmitted via satellites. In response to this growing demand, free space optical communication systems have been proposed, as they allow for the use of large bandwidths of unlicensed spectrum, enabling high data rates. However, optical communications are highly vulnerable to weather-induced disruptions, thereby limiting their high potential. This paper proposes the use of high altitude platform station (HAPS) systems in conjunction with delay-tolerant networking techniques to increase the amount of data that can be transmitted to the ground from satellites when compared to the use of traditional ground station network architectures. Considering the ever-evolving threat landscape and rapid changes in software development, we propose a risk assessment framework called SAFER (Software Analysis Framework for Evaluating Risk). This framework is based on the necessity of a dynamic, data-driven, and adaptable process to quantify security risk in the software supply chain. Usually, when formulating such frameworks, static pre-defined weights are assigned to reflect the impact of each contributing parameter while aggregating these individual parameters to compute resulting security risk scores. This leads to inflexibility, a lack of adaptability, and reduced accuracy, making them unsuitable for the changing nature of the digital world. We adopt a novel perspective by examining security risk through the lens of trust and incorporating the human aspect. Moreover, we quantify security risk associated with individual software by assessing and formulating risk elements quantitatively and exploring dynamic data-driven weight assignment. This enhances the sensitivity of the framework to cater to the evolving security risk factors associated with software development and the different actors involved in the entire process. The devised framework is tested through a dataset containing 9000 samples, comprehensive scenarios, assessments, and expert opinions. Furthermore, a comparison between scores computed by the OpenSSF scorecard, OWASP risk calculator, and the proposed SAFER framework has also been presented. Large machine-learning training datasets can be distilled into small collections of informative synthetic data samples. These synthetic sets support efficient model learning and reduce the communication cost of data sharing. Thus, high-fidelity distilled data can support the efficient deployment of machine learning applications in distributed network environments. A naive way to construct a synthetic set in a distributed environment is to allow each client to perform local data distillation and to merge local distillations at a central server. However, the quality of the resulting set is impaired by heterogeneity in the distributions of the local data held by clients. To overcome this challenge, we introduce the first collaborative data distillation technique, called CollabDM, which captures the global distribution of the data and requires only a single round of communication between client and server. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art one-shot learning method on skewed data in distributed learning environments. We also show the promising practical benefits of our method when applied to attack detection in 5G networks.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are not only resource-intensive to train but even more costly to deploy in production. Therefore, recent work has attempted to prune blocks of LLMs based on cheap proxies for estimating block importance, effectively removing 10% of blocks in well-trained LLaMa-2 and Mistral 7b models without any significant degradation of downstream metrics. In this paper, we explore different block importance metrics by considering adaptive metrics such as Shapley value in addition to static ones explored in prior work. We show that adaptive metrics exhibit a trade-off in performance between tasks i.e., improvement on one task may degrade performance on the other due to differences in the computed block influences. Furthermore, we extend this analysis from a complete block to individual self-attention and feed-forward layers, highlighting the propensity of the self-attention layers to be more amendable to pruning, even allowing removal of upto 33% of the self-attention layers without incurring any performance degradation on MMLU for Mistral 7b (significant reduction in costly maintenance of KV-cache). Finally, we look at simple performance recovery techniques to emulate the pruned layers by training lightweight additive bias or low-rank linear adapters. Performance recovery using emulated updates avoids performance degradation for the initial blocks (up to 5% absolute improvement on MMLU), which is either competitive or superior to the learning-based technique.

We introduce the Multi-Motion Discrete Diffusion Models (M2D2M), a novel approach for human motion generation from textual descriptions of multiple actions, utilizing the strengths of discrete diffusion models. This approach adeptly addresses the challenge of generating multi-motion sequences, ensuring seamless transitions of motions and coherence across a series of actions. The strength of M2D2M lies in its dynamic transition probability within the discrete diffusion model, which adapts transition probabilities based on the proximity between motion tokens, encouraging mixing between different modes. Complemented by a two-phase sampling strategy that includes independent and joint denoising steps, M2D2M effectively generates long-term, smooth, and contextually coherent human motion sequences, utilizing a model trained for single-motion generation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that M2D2M surpasses current state-of-the-art benchmarks for motion generation from text descriptions, showcasing its efficacy in interpreting language semantics and generating dynamic, realistic motions.

Understanding how light modifies long-range order is key to improve our ability to control material functionality on an ultrafast timescale. Transient spatial heterogeneity has been proposed in many materials, but isolating the dynamics of different regions experimentally has been challenging. Here we address this issue and measure the dynamics of orbital order melting in the layered manganite, La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, and isolate the surface dynamics from the bulk for the first time. Bulk measurements show orbital order is rapidly suppressed, but the correlation length surprisingly increases. However, the surface dynamics, show a stronger suppression and a significant decrease in correlation length. By isolating the surface changes, we find that light preferentially melts a less ordered surface and the loss of long-range order is likely driven by the formation of local and disordered polarons. Melting the disordered surface effectively increases the average correlation of the bulk probed volume, resolving the contradictory response. These results show that surface scattering methods are necessary to understand both surface and bulk dynamics in heterogeneous materials., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

We introduce Meta 3D Gen (3DGen), a new state-of-the-art, fast pipeline for text-to-3D asset generation. 3DGen offers 3D asset creation with high prompt fidelity and high-quality 3D shapes and textures in under a minute. It supports physically-based rendering (PBR), necessary for 3D asset relighting in real-world applications. Additionally, 3DGen supports generative retexturing of previously generated (or artist-created) 3D shapes using additional textual inputs provided by the user. 3DGen integrates key technical components, Meta 3D AssetGen and Meta 3D TextureGen, that we developed for text-to-3D and text-to-texture generation, respectively. By combining their strengths, 3DGen represents 3D objects simultaneously in three ways: in view space, in volumetric space, and in UV (or texture) space. The integration of these two techniques achieves a win rate of 68% with respect to the single-stage model. We compare 3DGen to numerous industry baselines, and show that it outperforms them in terms of prompt fidelity and visual quality for complex textual prompts, while being significantly faster.

We present Meta 3D AssetGen (AssetGen), a significant advancement in text-to-3D generation which produces faithful, high-quality meshes with texture and material control. Compared to works that bake shading in the 3D object's appearance, AssetGen outputs physically-based rendering (PBR) materials, supporting realistic relighting. AssetGen generates first several views of the object with factored shaded and albedo appearance channels, and then reconstructs colours, metalness and roughness in 3D, using a deferred shading loss for efficient supervision. It also uses a sign-distance function to represent 3D shape more reliably and introduces a corresponding loss for direct shape supervision. This is implemented using fused kernels for high memory efficiency. After mesh extraction, a texture refinement transformer operating in UV space significantly improves sharpness and details. AssetGen achieves 17% improvement in Chamfer Distance and 40% in LPIPS over the best concurrent work for few-view reconstruction, and a human preference of 72% over the best industry competitors of comparable speed, including those that support PBR. The relaxation of atomic positions to their optimal structural arrangement is crucial for understanding the emergence of new physical behavior in long scale superstructures in twisted bilayers of two-dimensional materials. The amount of deviation from a rigid moir\'e structure will depend on the elastic properties of the constituent monolayers which for the twisted bilayer - the more flexible the monolayers are, the lower the energy required to deform the layers to maximize the areas with an energetically optimal interlayer arrangement of atoms. We investigate this atomic reconstruction for twisted bilayers of highly flexible InSe. Results using two methods are demonstrated - first we train a machine-learned interatomic potential (MLIP) to enable fully atomistic relaxations of small-twist-angle large-length-scale moir\'e supercells while retaining density functional theory (DFT) level accuracy. We find substantial out-of-plane corrugation and in-plane domain formation for a wide range of twist angles and moir\'e length scales. We then adapt an existing continuum approach and show that it can reproduce some, but not all, features of the fully atomistic calculations., Comment: 11 pages

Partial-order plans in AI planning facilitate execution flexibility and several other tasks, such as plan reuse, modification, and decomposition, due to their less constrained nature. A Partial-Order Plan (POP) allows two actions with no ordering between them, thus providing the flexibility of executing actions in different sequences. This flexibility can be further extended by enabling parallel execution of actions in a POP to reduce its overall execution time. While extensive studies exist on improving the flexibility of a POP by optimizing its action orderings through plan deordering and reordering, there has been limited focus on the flexibility of executing actions concurrently in a plan. Execution concurrency in a POP can be achieved by incorporating action non-concurrency constraints, specifying which actions can not be executed in parallel. This work formalizes the conditions for non-concurrency constraints to transform a POP into a parallel plan. We also introduce an algorithm to enhance the plan's concurrency by optimizing resource utilization through substitutions of its subplans with respect to the corresponding planning task. Our algorithm employs block deordering that eliminates orderings in a POP by encapsulating coherent actions in blocks, and then exploits blocks as candidate subplans for substitutions. Pluggable type systems allow programmers to extend the type system of a programming language to enforce semantic properties defined by the programmer. Pluggable type systems are difficult to deploy in legacy codebases because they require programmers to write type annotations manually. This paper investigates how to use machine learning to infer type qualifiers automatically. We propose a novel representation, NaP-AST, that encodes minimal dataflow hints for the effective inference of type qualifiers. We evaluate several model architectures for inferring type qualifiers, including Graph Transformer Network, Graph Convolutional Network and Large Language Model. We further validated these models by applying them to 12 open-source programs from a prior evaluation of the NullAway pluggable typechecker, lowering warnings in all but one unannotated project. We discovered that GTN shows the best performance, with a recall of .89 and precision of 0.6. Furthermore, we conduct a study to estimate the number of Java classes needed for good performance of the trained model. For our feasibility study, performance improved around 16k classes, and deteriorated due to overfitting around 22k classes.

Optimal experimental design is a well studied field in applied science and engineering. Techniques for estimating such a design are commonly used within the framework of parameter estimation. Nonetheless, in recent years parameter estimation techniques are changing rapidly with the introduction of deep learning techniques to replace traditional estimation methods. This in turn requires the adaptation of optimal experimental design that is associated with these new techniques. In this paper we investigate a new experimental design methodology that uses deep learning. We show that the training of a network as a Likelihood Free Estimator can be used to significantly simplify the design process and circumvent the need for the computationally expensive bi-level optimization problem that is inherent in optimal experimental design for non-linear systems. Furthermore, deep design improves the quality of the recovery process for parameter estimation problems. As proof of concept we apply our methodology to two different systems of Ordinary Differential Equations.

Due to popularization of internet and e-commerce, more and more people getting involved in online shopping market. A large number of companies have been transferred to the internet where online customers have been increased due to easy access. The online business facilitates people to communicate without knowing each other. The e-commerce systems are the combination of commerce behavior and internet technologies. Therefore, trust aspects are positive elements in buyer-seller transactions and a potential source of competitive e-commerce industry. There are two different approaches to handle the trust. The first approach has a solid authentication set of rules where decisions are made on some digital or logical rules called policy based trust mechanism. The second approach is a decentralized trust approach where reputation assembled and shared in distributed environment called reputation based trust mechanism. Objectives: In this thesis, the strengths and weaknesses of policy and reputation based trust mechanisms have been identified through systematic literature review and industrial interviews. Furthermore, the process of integrated trust mechanism has been proposed. The integrated trust mechanism is proposed through mapping process, weakness of one mechanism with the strength of other. The proposed integrated trust mechanism was validated by conducting experiment with buyer/seller scenario in auction system. The analysis of collected results indicated that proposed integrated trust mechanism improved the trust of buyer against eBay and Tradera. At the end, we have discussed some key points that may affect trust relationship between seller and buyer. Furthermore, there is a need for further validation of proposed trust mechanism in auction system/e-commerce industry.

Deep learning has been constantly improving in recent years and a significant number of researchers have devoted themselves to the research of defect detection algorithms. Detection and recognition of small and complex targets is still a problem that needs to be solved. The authors of this research would like to present an improved defect detection model for detecting small and complex defect targets in steel surfaces. During steel strip production mechanical forces and environmental factors cause surface defects of the steel strip. Therefore the detection of such defects is key to the production of high-quality products. Moreover surface defects of the steel strip cause great economic losses to the high-tech industry. So far few studies have explored methods of identifying the defects and most of the currently available algorithms are not sufficiently effective. Therefore this study presents an improved real-time metallic surface defect detection model based on You Only Look Once (YOLOv5) specially designed for small networks. For the smaller features of the target the conventional part is replaced with a depth-wise convolution and channel shuffle mechanism. Then assigning weights to Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN) output features and fusing them increases feature propagation and the networks characterization ability. The experimental results reveal that the improved proposed model outperforms other comparable models in terms of accuracy and detection time. Recently, outstanding identification rates in image classification tasks were achieved by convolutional neural networks (CNNs). to use such skills, selective CNNs trained on a dataset of well-known images of metal surface defects captured with an RGB camera. Defects must be detected early to take timely corrective action due to production concerns. For image classification up till now, a model-based method has been utilized, which indicated the predicted reflection characteristics of surface defects in comparison to flaw-free surfaces. The problem of detecting steel surface defects has grown in importance as a result of the vast range of steel applications in end-product sectors such as automobiles, households, construction, etc. The manual processes for detections are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and expensive. Different strategies have been used to automate manual processes, but CNN models have proven to be the most effective rather than image processing and machine learning techniques. By using different CNN models with fine-tuning, easily compare their performance and select the best-performing model for the same kinds of tasks. However, it is important that using different CNN models either from fine tuning can be computationally expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, our study helps the upcoming researchers to choose the CNN without considering the issues of model complexity, performance, and computational resources. In this article, the performance of various CNN models with transfer learning techniques are evaluated. These models were chosen based on their popularity and impact in the field of computer vision research, as well as their performance on benchmark datasets. According to the outcomes, DenseNet201 outperformed the other CNN models and had the greatest detection rate on the NEU dataset, falling in at 98.37 percent.

3D object recognition is a challenging task for intelligent and robot systems in industrial and home indoor environments. It is critical for such systems to recognize and segment the 3D object instances that they encounter on a frequent basis. The computer vision, graphics, and machine learning fields have all given it a lot of attention. Traditionally, 3D segmentation was done with hand-crafted features and designed approaches that did not achieve acceptable performance and could not be generalized to large-scale data. Deep learning approaches have lately become the preferred method for 3D segmentation challenges by their great success in 2D computer vision. However, the task of instance segmentation is currently less explored. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for efficient 3D instance segmentation using red green blue and depth (RGB-D) data based on deep learning. The 2D region based convolutional neural networks (Mask R-CNN) deep learning model with point based rending module is adapted to integrate with depth information to recognize and segment 3D instances of objects. In order to generate 3D point cloud coordinates (x, y, z), segmented 2D pixels (u, v) of recognized object regions in the RGB image are merged into (u, v) points of the depth image. Moreover, we conducted an experiment and analysis to compare our proposed method from various points of view and distances. The experimentation shows the proposed 3D object recognition and instance segmentation are sufficiently beneficial to support object handling in robotic and intelligent systems.

The process of segmenting point cloud data into several homogeneous areas with points in the same region having the same attributes is known as 3D segmentation. Segmentation is challenging with point cloud data due to substantial redundancy, fluctuating sample density and lack of apparent organization. The research area has a wide range of robotics applications, including intelligent vehicles, autonomous mapping and navigation. A number of researchers have introduced various methodologies and algorithms. Deep learning has been successfully used to a spectrum of 2D vision domains as a prevailing A.I. methods. However, due to the specific problems of processing point clouds with deep neural networks, deep learning on point clouds is still in its initial stages. This study examines many strategies that have been presented to 3D instance and semantic segmentation and gives a complete assessment of current developments in deep learning-based 3D segmentation. In these approaches benefits, draw backs, and design mechanisms are studied and addressed. This study evaluates the impact of various segmentation algorithms on competitiveness on various publicly accessible datasets, as well as the most often used pipelines, their advantages and limits, insightful findings and intriguing future research directions.

The e-commerce systems are being tackled from commerce behavior and internet technologies. Therefore, trust aspect between buyer-seller transactions is a potential element which needs to be addressed in competitive e-commerce industry. The e-commerce industry is currently handling two different trust approaches. First approach consists on centralized mechanism where digital credentials/set of rules assembled, called Policy based trust mechanisms . Second approach consists on decentralized trust mechanisms where reputation, points assembled and shared, called Reputation based trust mechanisms. The difference between reputation and policy based trust mechanism will be analyzed and recommendations would be proposed to increase trust between buyer and seller in e-commerce industry. The integration of trust mechanism is proposed through mapping process, strength of one mechanism with the weakness of other. The proposed model for integrated mechanism will be presented and illustrated how the proposed model will be used in real world e-commerce industry.
