This white paper is the result of a collaboration by those that attended a workshop at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), organized by the FRIB Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA), on Theoretical Justifications and Motivations for Early High-Profile FRIB Experiments. It covers a wide range of topics related to the science that will be explored at FRIB. During operation, the radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) of the LINAC4 at CERN is exposed to high electric fields, which can lead to vacuum breakdown. It is also subject to beam loss, which can cause surface modification, including blistering, which can result in reduced electric field holding and an increased breakdown rate. First, experiments to study the high-voltage conditioning process and electrical breakdown statistics have been conducted using pulsed high voltage DC systems in order to identify materials with high electric field handling capability and robustness to low-energy irradiation. In this paper, we discuss the results obtained for the different materials tested. To complement these, an investigation of their metallurgical properties using advanced microscopic techniques was done to observe and characterize the different materials and to compare results before and after irradiation and breakdown testing.

This work studies the suitability of a set of different materials for manufacturing of more efficient and durable Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) structures compared to that currently used in many linear particle accelerators, traditionally made out of copper. RFQs are susceptible to vacuum breakdowns caused by the exposure to high electric fields, resulting in surface degradation. Additionally, a further limitation of present-day copper RFQs is surface blistering under hydrogen ion beam exposure, due to beam halo losses. Irradiation is associated with a further reduction of the breakdown field strength of the metal surface thereby affecting the overall efficiency of the RFQ. The investigated materials, Cu-OFE, CuCr1Zr, CuBe2, Ti6Al4V, SS316LN, Nb and Ta, were submitted to low-energy (45 keV) H$^-$ irradiation and tested in a direct-current (DC) system with pulsed high voltage. For comparison, the maximum surface electric field was measured for both irradiated and pristine (non irradiated) surfaces of the same material. The effects of irradiation on the surface of the materials, before and after being submitted to high electric fields, were studied with the help of microscopic imaging and chemical analysis. Blistering caused by H$^-$ irradiation has been observed in all copper and copper alloy materials. Despite reductions in breakdown field strength post-irradiation, no indications were found that the blisters on the surface have a direct cause in triggering breakdowns during high electric field tests. SS316LN, Ti6Al4V, CuBe2 and CuCr1Zr showed maximum surface electric fields higher than copper, making these promising candidate materials for future RFQs manufacturing. This paper focuses on the results with CuCr1Zr, CuBe2, SS316LN and Ta, complementing and expanding previous work exploring Cu-OFE, Nb and Ti6Al4V.

We present an $L$-like construction that produces the minimal model of $\mathsf{AD}_\mathbb{R}+$"$\Theta$ is regular". In fact, our construction can produce any model of $\mathsf{AD}^++\mathsf{AD}_\mathbb{R}+V=L(\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}))$ in which there is no hod mouse with a measurable limit of Woodins.

Quantum computing has tremendous potential to overcome some of the fundamental limitations present in classical information processing. Yet, today's technological limitations in the quality and scaling prevent exploiting its full potential. Quantum computing based on superconducting quantum processing units (QPUs) is among the most promising approaches towards practical quantum advantage. In this article the basic technological approach of IQM Quantum Computers is described covering both the QPU and the rest of the full-stack quantum computer. In particular, the focus is on a 20-qubit quantum computer featuring the Garnet QPU and its architecture, which we will scale up to 150 qubits. We also present QPU and system-level benchmarks, including a median 2-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5% and genuinely entangling all 20 qubits in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state.

The development of quantum computers needs reliable quantum hardware and tailored software for controlling electronics specific to various quantum platforms. Middleware is a type of computer software program that aims to provide standardized software tools across the entire pipeline, from high level execution of quantum computing algorithms to low level driver instructions tailored to specific experimental setups, including instruments. This paper presents updates to Qibolab, a software library that leverages Qibo capabilities to execute quantum algorithms on self hosted quantum hardware platforms. Qibolab offers an application programming interface (API) for instrument control through arbitrary pulses and driver operations including sweepers. This paper offers an overview of the new features implemented in Qibolab, including the redefined boundaries between platform and channel classes, the integration of an emulator for simulating quantum hardware behaviour, and it shows updated execution times benchmarks for superconducting single qubit calibration routines., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, proceedings for ACAT24, code available at https://github.com/qiboteam/qibolab

We involve the galactic halo observational data to test the weak field General Relativity involving the cosmological constant. Using the data for 15 hydrogen (Hi) VLA super spirals and the Tully-Fisher relation we obtain constraints for each galaxy. The results are consistent with previous results for spiral galaxies, as well as with the scaling relations for the halos, thus confirming the efficiency of the use of dark halo data and Tully-Fisher relation, including the baryonic Tully{Fisher index (BTFR), for testing modified gravity models., Comment: 5 pages, 1 Table, MPLA (in press)

This study investigates the modulation of particle fluxes at the Earths surface influenced by the intensity and orientation of the Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) carried by the Coronal Mass Ejecta (ICME). We examine how IMF and its Bz component, opposing the magnetosphere, significantly enhance geomagnetic activity through magnetic reconnection. This reconnection facilitates increased penetration of solar wind particles into the magnetosphere, thus amplifying the fluxes registered by terrestrial particle detectors and enhancing particle fluxes through reduced cutoff rigidity (magnetospheric effect, ME). Conversely, the orientation of the Bz component is less crucial for a Forbush decrease (FD); instead, the strength of the ejecta's scalar magnetic field (B) predominates, potentially triggering a significant FD. The study explores how magnetic field variations influence the flux of neutrons and muons, effectively modifying the observed rates of cosmic ray influx. Comprehensive data from the WIND magnetometer and Aragats spectrometers underline the direct relationship between ICME magnetic configurations and variations in ground-level particle fluxes. Moreover, we discover that the energy spectra of additional particles during ME are limited to 10 MeV due to the low energy of solar protons entering the terrestrial atmosphere. In contrast, the energy spectra of the missing FD particles can extend up to 100 MeV, demonstrating that magnetic traps and cradles formed by interactions between ejecta and Earth's magnetic fields can also deflect medium-energy solar protons. These insights advance our understanding of geomagnetic modulation of particle fluxes and bolster predictive models of space weather impacts on particle detection technologies.

In 2023, a series of intense Thunderstorm Ground Enhancements (TGEs) were recorded on Mount Aragats in Armenia, with five events exceeding the fair-weather cosmic ray flux by more than 100 percent. This study comprehensively analyzes these TGEs, investigating the atmospheric conditions and electric fields contributing to their occurrence. Key insights include discovering relationships between TGEs and atmospheric electric fields, recovering electron and gamma-ray energy spectra, and the impact of nearby lightning activity. The findings offer a deeper understanding of TGEs' role in atmospheric physics and its synergy with high energy astrophysics.

We have investigated electromagnetically induced transparency in the spectrum of selective reflection at the interface of Rb atom vapors and a dielectric nanocell window. A nanocell with atomic vapor column thicknesses ranging from 150 to 1200 nm, as well as a 50~$\mu$m thickness microcell were used. We have compared electromagnetically induced transparency observed for the cases of the selective reflection and transmission. It was demonstrated that for the thicknesses of below $\leq 1000$ nm selective reflection technique is more favorable. In contrast, for wider cells and microcells, using transmitted radiation as probe field is more effective., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The impact of the optical field polarization on the spectrum of magnetically-induced transitions, a class of transitions forbidden at zero magnetic field, is studied with a weak-probe sub-Doppler technique. The high spectral resolution of the technique combined with the simplicity in interpreting the observed spectra\EK{,} allows to follow the behavior of individual transitions as a function of the magnetic field amplitude. We observe only one intense transition (out of $2F_g+1$) in the case of linear ($\pi$) polarization in the $F_g\rightarrow F_g+2$ manifolds of $^{85}$Rb, $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs for fields above a few hundreds of gauss. We show that this behavior is in agreement with a model based on the diagonalization of the Zeeman Hamiltonian matrix. With the rapid development of micro-machined vapor-cell-based sensors these results will be of use to magnetometers operating above Earth field, wide-range laser frequency stabilization systems and atomic Faraday filters.

In healthcare, clinical risks are crucial for treatment decisions, yet the analysis of their associations is often overlooked. This gap is particularly significant when balancing risks that are weighed against each other, as in the case of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients facing stroke and bleeding risks with anticoagulant medication. While traditional regression models are ill-suited for this task due to standard errors in risk estimation, a novel two-stage Deming regression framework is proposed to address this issue, offering a more accurate tool for analyzing associations between variables observed with errors of known or estimated variances. The first stage is to obtain the variable values with variances of errors either by estimation or observation, followed by the second stage that fits a Deming regression model potentially subject to a transformation. The second stage accounts for the uncertainties associated with both independent and response variables, including known or estimated variances and additional unknown variances from the model. The complexity arising from different scenarios of uncertainty is handled by existing and advanced variations of Deming regression models. An important practical application is to support personalized treatment recommendations based on clinical risk associations that were identified by the proposed framework. The model's effectiveness is demonstrated by applying it to a real-world dataset of AF-diagnosed patients to explore the relationship between stroke and bleeding risks, providing crucial guidance for making informed decisions regarding anticoagulant medication. Furthermore, the model's versatility in addressing data containing multiple sources of uncertainty such as privacy-protected data suggests promising avenues for future research in regression analysis.

We perform an uncertainty estimate of quadrupole moments and B(E2) transition rates that inform nuclear collectivity. In particular, we study the low-lying states of 6Li and 12C using the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model. For a narrow standard deviation of approximately 1% on the low-energy constants which parametrize high-precision chiral potentials, we find output standard deviations in the collective observables ranging from approximately 3-6%. Interest in magnetically induced (MI) transitions of alkali metal atoms is caused by the fact that their intensities can exceed the intensities of regular atomic transitions in a wide range of magnetic field (200 - 4000 G). The goal of this work was to form and study, for the first time, an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance in a strong magnetic field using a probe radiation tuned to |Fg = F; mF = 0-> Fe = F; mF = 0> MI transition, which is forbidden in zero magnetic field. Two narrow-band linearly-polarized cw diode lasers were used to form a EIT resonance on a lambda-type system of Cs atomic D2 line in a strong transverse magnetic field (up to 1000 G). The $N$-resonance process is an accessible and effective method for obtaining narrow (down to subnatural linewidth), and contrasted resonances, using two continuous lasers and an Rb vapor cell. In this article, we investigate the impact of buffer gas partial pressure on the contrast and linewidth of $N$-resonances formed in the $D_1$ line of an $^{85}$Rb thermal vapor. $N$-resonances are compared to usual EIT resonances, and we highlight their advantages and disadvantages. Several rounds of measurements were performed with five vapor cells, each containing Rb and Ne buffer gas with different partial pressures (ranging from 0 to 400 Torr). This reveals the existence of an optimum Ne partial pressure that yields the best contrast, for which we provide a qualitative description. We then study the behavior of the $N$-resonance components when a transverse magnetic field is applied to the vapor cell. Following \cite{bagaria2019large}, given cardinals $\kappa<\lambda$, we say $\kappa$ is a club $\lambda$-Berkeley cardinal if for every transitive set $N$ of size $<\lambda$ such that $\kappa\subseteq N$, there is a club $C\subseteq \kappa$ with the property that for every $\eta\in C$ there is an elementary embedding $j: N\rightarrow N$ with crit$(j)=\eta$. We say $\kappa$ is $\nu$-club $\lambda$-Berkeley if $C\subseteq \kappa$ as above is a $\nu$-club. We say $\kappa$ is $\lambda$-Berkeley if $C$ is unbounded in $\kappa$. We show that under AD$^+$, (1) every regular Suslin cardinal is $\omega$-club $\Theta$-Berkeley (see \rthm{main theorem}), (2) $\omega_1$ is club $\Theta$-Berkeley (see \rthm{main theorem lr} and \rthm{main theorem}), and (3) the ${\tilde\delta}^1_{2n}$'s are $\Theta$-Berkeley -- in particular, $\omega_2$ is $\Theta$-Berkeley (see \rrem{omega2}). Along the way, we represent regular Suslin cardinals in direct limits as cutpoint cardinals (see \rthm{char extenders}). This topic has been studied in \cite{MPSC} and \cite{jackson2022suslin}, albeit from a different point of view. We also show that, assuming $V=L(\mathbb{R})+{\mathrm{AD}}$, $\omega_1$ is not $\Theta^+$-Berkeley, so the result stated in the title is optimal (see \rthm{lr optimal} and \rthm{thetareg optimal}).

Recent progress in text-guided image inpainting, based on the unprecedented success of text-to-image diffusion models, has led to exceptionally realistic and visually plausible results. However, there is still significant potential for improvement in current text-to-image inpainting models, particularly in better aligning the inpainted area with user prompts and performing high-resolution inpainting. Therefore, we introduce HD-Painter, a training free approach that accurately follows prompts and coherently scales to high resolution image inpainting. To this end, we design the Prompt-Aware Introverted Attention (PAIntA) layer enhancing self-attention scores by prompt information resulting in better text aligned generations. To further improve the prompt coherence we introduce the Reweighting Attention Score Guidance (RASG) mechanism seamlessly integrating a post-hoc sampling strategy into the general form of DDIM to prevent out-of-distribution latent shifts. Moreover, HD-Painter allows extension to larger scales by introducing a specialized super-resolution technique customized for inpainting, enabling the completion of missing regions in images of up to 2K resolution. Our experiments demonstrate that HD-Painter surpasses existing state-of-the-art approaches quantitatively and qualitatively across multiple metrics and a user study. The Zeeman effect is an important topic in atomic spectroscopy. The induced change in transition frequencies and amplitudes finds applications in the Earth-field-range magnetometry. At intermediate magnetic field amplitude $B\sim B_0 = A_\text{hfs}/\mu_B$, where $A_\text{hfs}$ is the magnetic dipole constant of the ground state, and $\mu_B$ is the Bohr magneton ($B_0\approx 1.7$ kG for Cs), the rigorous rule $\Delta F = 0, \pm1$ is affected by the coupling between magnetic sub-levels induced by the field. Transitions satisfying $\Delta F = \pm2$, referred to as magnetically-induced transitions, can be observed. Here, we show that a significant redistribution of the Cs $6\text{S}_{1/2}\rightarrow 6\text{P}_{3/2}$ magnetically-induced transition intensities occurs with increasing magnetic field. We observe that the strongest transition in the group $F_g=3\rightarrow F_e=5$ ($\sigma^+$ polarization) for $B3 B_0$. On the other hand, the strongest transition in the group $F_g=2\rightarrow F_e=4$ ($\sigma^-$ polarization) remains so for all our measurements with magnetic fields up to 9 kG. These results are in agreement with a theoretical model. The model predicts that similar observations can be made for all alkali metals, including Na, K and Rb atoms. Our findings are important for magnetometers utilizing the Zeeman effect above Earth field, following the rapid development of micro-machined vapor-cell-based sensors.

The ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model naturally describes nuclear deformation and collectivity, and is therefore well-suited to studying the dynamics and coexistence of shapes in atomic nuclei. For the first time, we analyze how these features in low-lying states of 6Li and 12C are impacted by the underlying realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. We find that the interaction parametrization has a notable but limited effect on collective shapes in the lowest 6Li and 12C states, while collective structures in the excited 2+ state of 12C are significantly more sensitive to the interaction parameters and exhibits emergent shape coexistence., Comment: 4 pages + references, 3 figures, CGS17 (2023) conference proceedings contribution

Engineering and applied science rely on computational experiments to rigorously study physical systems. The mathematical models used to probe these systems are highly complex, and sampling-intensive studies often require prohibitively many simulations for acceptable accuracy. Surrogate models provide a means of circumventing the high computational expense of sampling such complex models. In particular, polynomial chaos expansions (PCEs) have been successfully used for uncertainty quantification studies of deterministic models where the dominant source of uncertainty is parametric. We discuss an extension to conventional PCE surrogate modeling to enable surrogate construction for stochastic computational models that have intrinsic noise in addition to parametric uncertainty. We develop a PCE surrogate on a joint space of intrinsic and parametric uncertainty, enabled by Rosenblatt transformations, and then extend the construction to random field data via the Karhunen-Loeve expansion. We then take advantage of closed-form solutions for computing PCE Sobol indices to perform a global sensitivity analysis of the model which quantifies the intrinsic noise contribution to the overall model output variance. Additionally, the resulting joint PCE is generative in the sense that it allows generating random realizations at any input parameter setting that are statistically approximately equivalent to realizations from the underlying stochastic model. The method is demonstrated on a chemical catalysis example model.

We show that in the $\mathbb{P}_{\max}$ extension of a certain Chang-type model of determinacy, if $\kappa\in\{\omega_1, \omega_2, \omega_3\}$, then the restriction of the club filter on $\kappa\cap\mathrm{Cof}(\omega)$ to HOD is an ultrafilter in HOD. Based on earlier work of the third author, we construct a Chang-type model with supercompact measures extending a derived model of a given hod mouse with a regular cardinal $\delta$ that is both a limit of Woodin cardinals and a limit of ${<}\delta$-strong cardinals. The existence of such a hod mouse is consistent relative to a Woodin cardinal that is a limit of Woodin cardinals. We argue that our Chang-type model satisfies $\mathsf{AD}^+ + \mathsf{AD}_{\mathbb{R}} + \Theta$ is regular + $\omega_1$ is ${<}\delta_{\infty}$-supercompact for some regular cardinal $\delta_{\infty}>\Theta$. This complements Woodin's generalized Chang model, which satisfies $\mathsf{AD}^+ + \mathsf{AD}_{\mathbb{R}}+\omega_1$ is supercompact, assuming a proper class of Woodin cardinals that are limits of Woodin cardinals., Comment: 22 pages

We combine the \textit{ab initio} symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM) with the single-particle Green's function approach to construct optical potentials rooted in first principles. Specifically, we show that total cross sections and phase shifts for neutron elastic scattering from a $^4$He target with projectile energies between 0.5 and 10 MeV closely reproduce the experiment. In addition, we discuss an important new development that resolves a long-standing issue with spurious center-of-mass motion in the Green's function formalism for many-body approaches. The new development opens the path for first-principle predictions of cross sections for elastic scattering of single-nucleon projectiles, nucleon capture and deuteron breakup reactions, feasible for a broad range of open-shell spherical and deformed nuclei in the SA-NCSM approach., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, to be submitted to Physical Review C

The goal of this paper is to present an approach to Hod Pair Capturing (HPC). $HPC$ is the most outstanding open problem of descriptive inner model theory. More specifically, we introduce two principles, the Direct Limit Independence and the Bounded Direct Limits, and show that they together imply HPC.

Magnetically induced (MI) transitions (F${}_{g}$ = 1 $\rightarrow$ F${}_{e}$= 3) of ${}^{87}$Rb D${}_{2}$ line are among the most promising atomic transitions for applications in laser physics. They reach their maximum intensity in the 0.2--2 kG magnetic field range and are more intense than many conventional atomic transitions. An important feature of MI transitions is their large frequency shift with respect to the unperturbed hyperfine transitions which reaches $\sim$12 GHz in magnetic fields of $\sim$ 3 kG, while they are formed on the high-frequency wing of the spectrum and do not overlap with other transitions. Some important peculiarities have been demonstrated for the MI 5S${}_{1/2}$$\rightarrow$ 5P${}_{3/2}$ transitions ($\lambda$=780 nm). Particularly, it was shown that using a nanocell with thickness $L= 100$~nm it is possible to realize 1 $\mu$m-spatial resolution which is important when determining magnetic fields with strong spatial gradient (of $>$~3G /$\mu$m). Earlier, our studies have been performed for 5S${}_{1/2}$ $\rightarrow$ $n$P${}_{3/2}$ transition with $n = 5$, while it is also theoretically shown to be promising for the transitions with $n = 6, 7, 8$ and $9$, corresponding to the transition wavelengths of 420.2~nm, 358.7~nm, 334.9~nm and 322.8~nm, respectively., Comment: None
