1. Prognostic peripheral blood biomarkers at ICU admission predict COVID-19 clinical outcomes

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge the capacities of hospital ICUs which currently lack the ability to identify prospectively those patients who may require extended management. In this study of 90 ICU COVID-19 patients, we evaluated serum levels of four cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNFα) as well as standard clinical and laboratory measurements. On 42 of these patients (binned into Initial and Replication Cohorts), we further performed CyTOF-based deep immunophenotyping of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with a panel of 38 antibodies. All measurements and patient samples were taken at time of ICU admission and retrospectively linked to patient clinical outcomes through statistical approaches. These analyses resulted in the definition of a new measure of patient clinical outcome: patients who will recover after short ICU stays (< 6 days) and those who will subsequently die or recover after long ICU stays (≥6 days). Based on these clinical outcome categories, we identified blood prognostic biomarkers that, at time of ICU admission, prospectively distinguish, with 91% sensitivity and 91% specificity (positive likelihood ratio 10.1), patients in the two clinical outcome groups. This is achieved through a tiered evaluation of serum IL-10 and targeted immunophenotyping of monocyte subsets, specifically, CD11clow classical monocytes. Both immune biomarkers were consistently elevated ( ≥15 pg/ml and ≥2.7 x107/L for serum IL-10 and CD11clow classical monocytes, respectively) in those patients who will subsequently die or recover after long ICU stays. This highly sensitive and specific prognostic test could prove useful in guiding clinical resource allocation.

Abstract: Background Increased understanding of whether individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 are protected from future SARS-CoV-2 infection is an urgent requirement. We aimed to investigate whether antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were associated with a decreased risk of symptomatic and asymptomatic reinfection. Methods A large, multicentre, prospective cohort study was done, with participants recruited from publicly funded hospitals in all regions of England. All health-care workers, support staff, and administrative staff working at hospitals who could remain engaged in follow-up for 12 months were eligible to join The SARS-CoV-2 Immunity and Reinfection Evaluation study. Participants were excluded if they had no PCR tests after enrolment, enrolled after Dec 31, 2020, or had insufficient PCR and antibody data for cohort assignment. Participants attended regular SARS-CoV-2 PCR and antibody testing (every 2–4 weeks) and completed questionnaires every 2 weeks on symptoms and exposures. At enrolment, participants were assigned to either the positive cohort (antibody positive, or previous positive PCR or antibody test) or negative cohort (antibody negative, no previous positive PCR or antibody test). The primary outcome was a reinfection in the positive cohort or a primary infection in the negative cohort, determined by PCR tests. Potential reinfections were clinically reviewed and classified according to case definitions (confirmed, probable, or possible) and symptom-status, depending on the hierarchy of evidence. Primary infections in the negative cohort were defined as a first positive PCR test and seroconversions were excluded when not associated with a positive PCR test. A proportional hazards frailty model using a Poisson distribution was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRR) to compare infection rates in the two cohorts. Findings From June 18, 2020, to Dec 31, 2020, 30 625 participants were enrolled into the study. 51 participants withdrew from the study, 4913 were excluded, and 25 661 participants (with linked data on antibody and PCR testing) were included in the analysis. Data were extracted from all sources on Feb 5, 2021, and include data up to and including Jan 11, 2021. 155 infections were detected in the baseline positive cohort of 8278 participants, collectively contributing 2 047 113 person-days of follow-up. This compares with 1704 new PCR positive infections in the negative cohort of 17 383 participants, contributing 2 971 436 person-days of follow-up. The incidence density was 7·6 reinfections per 100 000 person-days in the positive cohort, compared with 57·3 primary infections per 100 000 person-days in the negative cohort, between June, 2020, and January, 2021. The adjusted IRR was 0·159 for all reinfections (95% CI 0·13–0·19) compared with PCR-confirmed primary infections. The median interval between primary infection and reinfection was more than 200 days. Interpretation A previous history of SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with an 84% lower risk of infection, with median protective effect observed 7 months following primary infection. This time period is the minimum probable effect because seroconversions were not included. This study shows that previous infection with SARS-CoV-2 induces effective immunity to future infections in most individuals. Abstract: Summary Background BNT162b2 mRNA and ChAdOx1 nCOV-19 adenoviral vector vaccines have been rapidly rolled out in the UK from December, 2020. We aimed to determine the factors associated with vaccine coverage for both vaccines and documented the vaccine effectiveness of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a cohort of health-care workers undergoing regular asymptomatic testing. Methods The SIREN study is a prospective cohort study among staff (aged ≥18 years) working in publicly-funded hospitals in the UK. Participants were assigned into either the positive cohort (antibody positive or history of infection [indicated by previous positivity of antibody or PCR tests]) or the negative cohort (antibody negative with no previous positive test) at the beginning of the follow-up period. Baseline risk factors were collected at enrolment, symptom status was collected every 2 weeks, and vaccination status was collected through linkage to the National Immunisations Management System and questionnaires. Participants had fortnightly asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing and monthly antibody testing, and all tests (including symptomatic testing) outside SIREN were captured. Data cutoff for this analysis was Feb 5, 2021. The follow-up period was Dec 7, 2020, to Feb 5, 2021. The primary outcomes were vaccinated participants (binary ever vacinated variable; indicated by at least one vaccine dose recorded by at least one of the two vaccination data sources) for the vaccine coverage analysis and SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by a PCR test for the vaccine effectiveness analysis. We did a mixed-effect logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with vaccine coverage. We used a piecewise exponential hazard mixed-effects model (shared frailty-type model) using a Poisson distribution to calculate hazard ratios to compare time-to-infection in unvaccinated and vaccinated participants and estimate the impact of the BNT162b2 vaccine on all PCR-positive infections (asymptomatic and symptomatic). This study is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN11041050, and is ongoing. Findings 23 324 participants from 104 sites (all in England) met the inclusion criteria for this analysis and were enrolled. Included participants had a median age of 46·1 years (IQR 36·0–54·1) and 19 692 (84%) were female; 8203 (35%) were assigned to the positive cohort at the start of the analysis period, and 15 121 (65%) assigned to the negative cohort. Total follow-up time was 2 calendar months and 1 106 905 person-days (396 318 vaccinated and 710 587 unvaccinated). Vaccine coverage was 89% on Feb 5, 2021, 94% of whom had BNT162b2 vaccine. Significantly lower coverage was associated with previous infection, gender, age, ethnicity, job role, and Index of Multiple Deprivation score. During follow-up, there were 977 new infections in the unvaccinated cohort, an incidence density of 14 infections per 10 000 person-days; the vaccinated cohort had 71 new infections 21 days or more after their first dose (incidence density of eight infections per 10 000 person-days) and nine infections 7 days after the second dose (incidence density four infections per 10 000 person-days). In the unvaccinated cohort, 543 (56%) participants had typical COVID-19 symptoms and 140 (14%) were asymptomatic on or 14 days before their PCR positive test date, compared with 29 (36%) with typical COVID-19 symptoms and 15 (19%) asymptomatic in the vaccinated cohort. A single dose of BNT162b2 vaccine showed vaccine effectiveness of 70% (95% CI 55–85) 21 days after first dose and 85% (74–96) 7 days after two doses in the study population. In response, a monitoring program to track water quality and a winter drawdown program to mitigate growth of M. spicatum were initiated in 1985. Abstract: The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a 1000 T D 2 O Cerenkov detector that is sensitive to 8 B solar neutrinos. The energy, radius, and direction with respect to the sun is measured for each neutrino event; these distributions are used to separately determine the rates of the charged current, neutral current and electron scattering reactions of neutrinos on deuterium. Assuming an undistorted 8 B spectrum, the ν e component of the 8 B solar flux is φ e = 1.76 +0.05 −0.05 (stat.) +0.09 −0.09 (syst.) × 10 6 cm −2 s −1 based on events with a measured kinetic enegy above 5 MeV. The non- ν e component is φ μτ = 3.41 +0.45 −0.45 (stat.) +0.48 −0.45 (syst.) × 10 6 cm −2 s −1 , 5.3 σ greater than zero, providing strong evidence for solar ν e flavor transformation. The total flux measured with the NC reaction is φ NC = 5.09 +0.044 −0.43 (stat.) +0.46 −0.43 (syst.) × 10 6 cm −2 s −1 , consistent with solar models. The night minus day rate is 14.0% ± 6.3% +1.5 −1.4 % of the average rate. If the total flux of active neutrinos is additionally constrained to have no asymmetry, the ν e asymmetry is found to be 7.0% ± 4.9% +1.3 −1.2 %. A global solar neutrino analysis is terms of matter-enhanced oscillations of two active flavors strongly favors the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) solution.

Abstract: Data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory have been used to constrain the lifetime for nucleon decay to ``invisible'' modes, such as n -> 3 nu. The analysis was based on a search for gamma-rays from the de-excitation of the residual nucleus that would result from the disappearance of either a proton or neutron from O16. A limit of tau_inv > 2 x 10^{29} years is obtained at 90% confidence for either neutron or proton decay modes. Abstract: A paleolimnological study was used in conjunction with ten years of monitoring data to assess the timing and magnitude of historical water quality changes in Candlewood Lake, a large pumped-storage reservoir in western Connecticut, USA. The paleolimnological aspect of the study supported much of the current literature on both reservoir development and die effects of land-use alterations of watersheds on waterbodies. Water quality trends gleaned from the monitoring database confirmed recent conditions inferred from fossil assemblages. Monitoring data also provided evidence supporting an improvement in trophic conditions beginning around 1988, but a continued increase in dissolved salt levels. The paleolimnological study and die long-term monitoring effort complemented each other in that the former provided quantitative insight beyond die temporal scope of monitoring, while die resolution of die latter enabled managers to assess effective strategies.

Abstract: Herschel cryogenics instrument (HIFI, PACS, SPIRE) flight models have been delivered to ESA & Prime contractor Thales Alenia Space mid 2007, to be integrated and tested on the Herschel spacecraft, for a launch mid May 2009.The instrument integration and test campaign at spacecraft level was performed between mid 2007 and end 2008 in Astrium GmbH, Immenstadt (Gernany) and later in ESA’s test facilities at Estec, Noordwijk (Nederland). The objective of these tests was to demonstrate full operability and performances of the instruments in spacecraft configuration, and their compatibility with the launch and space environment, while maintaining full compliance with the underlying requirements. A set of short functional tests were developed and used repeatedly to quickly check the health of each instrument at key points in the test campaign. Abstract: The seasonal periodicity of taxa of Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae from a small New England lake is described for the period September 1983 through June 1988. We found 51 taxa, including 29 that accounted for over 10% of the total in at least one collection. The taxa were fitted into one of five seasonal patterns. Patterns I and II represented taxa restricted to warm (pattern I) or cold (pattern II) months, respectively. Pattern HI represented organisms that began growth in the summer, persisted through autumn and disappeared with the onset of an ice cover. Pattern IV was an extension of pattern III, in which the taxon remained in the plankton throughout the winter and disappeared soon after ice out. Species without a clear seasonal pattern were grouped as pattern V. The seasonal periodicity of the flora, as examined with ordination analyses, was found to remain remarkedly similar during the 58–month study. Except for episodes of low pH during spring snow melt and unseasonally warm or cold weather, sample scores followed a fairly consistent pattern along the first and second primary axes. Water temperature, specific conductance, and pH were important variables that controlled changes in the species composition during the course of a given year. The flora was used to develop an inference model for water temperature. According to the analyses, the remains of a surface sediment sample represented a flora that grew primarily during the late autumn period at 7.6 ° C. Ways in which seasonal data could be utilized to improve paleolimnological inference work are discussed.

Abstract: A new species, Mallomonas duerrschmidtiae, with characteristics common to both Mallomonas crassisquama (Asmund) Fott and Mallomonas pseudocoronata Prescott, is described from acidic lakes low in specific conductance and total phosphorus concentration. Characteristics of scales, bristles and spines serve to separate the three taxa. The length and area of scales of M. duerrschmidtiae are significantly larger than those of M. crassisquama but smaller than those of M. pseudocoronata. Although the anterior submarginal ribs of scales of M. duerrschmidtiae may become extended to form short wings, the scales lack the large forward projecting anterior wings characteristic of scales of M. pseudocoronata. Features of the dome and junction between the arms of the V-rib and anterior submarginal ribs also serve to distinguish between the three species. Cells of M. duerrschmidtiae also possess long, smooth and thick spines on their posterior scales and lack helmet bristles. M. duerrschmidtiae has different maxima along pH, temperature, specific conductance, total phosphorus and seasonal gradients than either M. crassisquama or M. pseudocoronata. Discriminant analysis, based on nine morphological characters, was used to successfully classify body scales of the three species. The importance of M. duerrschmidtiae as a bioindicator in future lake monitoring and paleolimnological inference studies is discussed.

Abstract: Abundance of living populations of scaled chrysophytes were used to develop multiple regression models for inferring lakewater pH. Until now, all such inference models had been prepared with surface sediment remains and used to reconstruct historical (down-core) changes. We demonstrate that highly significant models can be prepared from living populations of scaled-chrysophytes which could be valuable for monitoring chronic, episodic and/or long-term changes in lakewater pH. Average weighted-mean pH and a cluster analysis technique were used to divide 33 taxa found in 26 Connecticut lakes into groups according to their distribution along a pH gradient. Two calculations of average weighted-mean pH were made; one based on data from this study and one from literature records. Inference models were developed using a single sample from each lake as well as for multiple samples collected throughout the year. The best model based on a single discrete sample yielded an R2 = 0.58 (p 2 values, (between 0.75 and 0.83). Scaled chrysophytes appear to be a very valuable assemblage of indicator organisms for the long-term monitoring of lakes.

Abstract: This article provides the complete description of resultsfrom the Phase I data set of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). ThePhase I data set is based on a 0.65 kt-year exposure of heavy water tothe solar 8B neutrino flux. Included here are details of the SNO physicsand detector model, evaluations of systematic uncertainties, andestimates of backgrounds. Also discussed are SNO's approach tostatistical extraction of the signals from the three neutrino reactions(charged current, neutral current, and elastic scattering) and theresults of a search for a day-night asymmetry in the ?e flux. Under theassumption that the 8B spectrum is undistorted, the measurements fromthis phase yield a solar ?e flux of ?(?e) =1.76+0.05?0.05(stat.)+0.09?0.09 (syst.) x 106 cm?2 s?1, and a non-?ecomponent ?(? mu) = 3.41+0.45?0.45(stat.)+0.48?0.45 (syst.) x 106 cm?2s?1. The sum of these components provides a total flux in excellentagreement with the predictions of Standard Solar Models. The day-nightasymmetry in the ?e flux is found to be Ae = 7.0 +- 4.9 (stat.)+1.3?1.2percent (sys.), when the asymmetry in the total flux is constrained to bezero.

Abstract: Upper limits on the \nuebar flux at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory have been set based on the \nuebar charged-current reaction on deuterium. The reaction produces a positron and two neutrons in coincidence. This distinctive signature allows a search with very low background for \nuebar's from the Sun and other potential sources. Both differential and integral limits on the \nuebar flux have been placed in the energy range from 4 -- 14.8 MeV. For an energy-independent ��_e --> \nuebar conversion mechanism, the integral limit on the flux of solar \nuebar's in the energy range from 4 -- 14.8 MeV is found to be ��_\nuebar, submitted to Phys. Abstract: The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory has precisely determined the total active (nu(x)) B-8 solar neutrino flux without assumptions about the energy dependence of the nu(e) survival probability. The measurements were made with dissolved NaCl in heavy water to enhance the sensitivity and signature for neutral-current interactions. The flux is found to be 5.21+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.38(syst)x10(6) cm(-2) s(-1), in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of these and other solar and reactor neutrino results yields Deltam(2)=7.1(-0.6)(+1.2)x10(-5) eV(2) and theta= 32.5(-2.3)(+2.4) degrees. Maximal mixing is rejected at the equivalent of 5.4 standard deviations.

Abstract: The observation that subjects who have a striking oral exostosis, called torus palatinus, also tended to have normal or high bone densities prompted us to examine an unselected population referred for bone density assessment for a possible correlation with torus palatinus. Subjects referred from community physicians had a visual examination of the open mouth to estimate the size of any torus palatinus (0 for none/trace to 5 for very large) before undergoing a bone density measurement by dual energy x-ray absortiometry. Bone density T- and z-scores were correlated with the size of each subject's torus palatinus. Torus size groups were also correlated with other variables affecting bone density. About 20% of 370 postmenopausal female subjects, >90% Caucasian, had a moderate to large torus palatinus. Regression correlations for torus size were modest, but significantly related to T- and z-scores of lumbar vertebrae and left hip (P < 0.01 for each). Differences due to medication, body mass index, smoking, parity, and several other factors that affect bone density did not diminish the relation to torus size. This study shows a small, but significant, positive relation for postmenopausal, Caucasian women between bone mineral density and torus size after controlling for several variables known to affect bone density were examined. Torus prominence, in association with other factors, can be considered in decisions for testing bone density in otherwise normal postmenopausal women.

Abstract: A calibration source employing 8Li (t_1/2 = 0.838s) has been developed for use with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). This source creates a spectrum of beta particles with an energy range similar to that of the SNO 8B solar neutrino signal. The source is used to test the SNO detector's energy response, position reconstruction and data reduction algorithms. The 8Li isotope is created using a deuterium-tritium neutron generator in conjunction with a 11B target, and is carried to a decay chamber using a gas/aerosol transport system. The decay chamber detects prompt alpha particles by gas scintillation in coincidence with the beta particles which exit through a thin stainless steel wall. Abstract: Observations of neutral current neutrino interactions on deuterium in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are reported. Using the neutral current, elastic scattering, and charged current reactions and assuming the standard 8B shape, the electron-neutrino component of the 8B solar flux is 1.76 +/-0.05(stat.)+/-0.09(syst.) x10^6/(cm^2 s), for a kinetic energy threshold of 5 MeV. The non-electron neutrino component is 3.41+/-0.45(stat.)+0.48,-0.45(syst.) x10^6/(cm^2 s), 5.3 standard deviations greater than zero, providing strong evidence for solar electron neutrino flavor transformation. Abstract: The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is a 1,000 tonne heavy water Cerenkov‐based neutrino detector situated 2,000 meters underground in INCO’s Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. For the neutrinos from 8B decay in the Sun SNO observes the Charged Current neutrino reaction sensitive only to electron neutrinos and others (Neutral Current and Elastic Scattering) sensitive to all active neutrino types and thereby can search for direct evidence of neutrino flavor change. Using these reactions and assuming the standard 8B shape, the ve component of the 8B solar flux is φe = 1.76−0.05+0.05(stat.)−0.09+0.09 (syst.) × 106 cm−2s−1 for a kinetic energy threshold of 5 MeV. The non‐ve component is φμτ = 3.41−0.45+0.45(stat.)−0.45+0.48 (syst.) × 106 cm−2s−1, 5.3σ greater than zero, providing strong evidence for solar ve flavor transformation. The total flux measured with the NC reaction is φNC = 5.09−0.43+0.44(stat.)−0.43+0.46 (syst.) × 106 cm−2s−1, consistent with solar models. For charged current events, ...

Abstract: The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) has measured day and night solar neutrino energy spectra and rates. For charged current events, assuming an undistorted $^8$B spectrum, the night minus day rate is $14.0% \pm 6.3% ^{+1.5}_{-1.4}%$ of the average rate. If the total flux of active neutrinos is additionally constrained to have no asymmetry, the $\nu_e$ asymmetry is found to be $7.0% \pm 4.9% ^{+1.3}_{-1.2}%$. Abstract: Solar neutrinos from the decay of 8B have been detected at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) via the charged current (CC) reaction on deuterium and by the elastic scattering (ES) of electrons. The CC reaction is sensitive exclusively to νe, while the ES reaction also has a small sensitivity to νμ and ντ. The flux of νe from 8B decay measured by the CC reaction rate is φCC(ν e )=[1.75±0.07(stat.) −0.11 +0.12 (syst.)×0.05(theor.)]×106cm−2s−1. Assuming no flavor transformation, the flux inferred from the ES reaction rate is φES(ν x )=[2.39±0.34(stat.) −0.14 +0.16 (syst.)]×106cm−2s−1. Comparison of φCC(νe) to the Super-Kamiokande collaboration’s precision value of φES(νx) yields a 3.3σ difference, assuming the systematic uncertainties are normally distributed, providing evidence that there is a nonelectron flavor active neutrino component in the solar flux. The total flux of active 8B neutrinos is thus determined to be (5.44±0.99)×106 cm−2 s−1, in close agreement with the predictions of solar models.

Abstract: Background Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a common condition with a reported 1:50 sexually active women in the UK developing it annually. An estimated 1:5 will consequently become infertile. Use of the 2011 BASHH guidelines provides an excellent tool in improving uniformity in treatment and advice provided. Aim To assess improvement in care from two cohorts of patient9s with PID attending a District General Hospital clinic, at two points, 3 years apart by introduction of a PID tick-box sticker. Method Using a BASHH guideline based proforma, data were recorded and compared between 2 cohorts, the 1st from June to December 2008 (27pts), the 2nd from 2011 (25pts). Results In 2011: STI detection was increased at 48%, from 37% previously, reflecting national trends. 88% received 2 weeks of metronidazole and doxycycline (12% had erythromycin due to risk of pregnancy). None had ceftriaxone as per local guidelines based on this and an additional audit, which revealed very low prevalence of infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the local PID population. Improvements with the introduction of the sticker included number of pregnancy tests performed—80% up from 26% and documentation of provision of written information which rose from 3.7% to 88%. 60% saw the HA at their clinic visit compared to 44% in 2008. Partner notification rates were unaffected with 51.6% of male contacts screened with a STI detected in 44% as opposed to 67% in 2008 with a STI in 37%. N gonorrhoeae was not identified in any presenting woman, nor any screened contact in 2011 and in only one contact in 2008. Conclusion Introduction of a simple measure such as a PID sticker can aid documentation and adherence to correct management. Striving to improve better partner notification with subsequent screening and treatment, should remain a priority. Of note, there were no Gonococcal infections detected in any of our 2011 cohort and this reflects the local prevalence.

Abstract: We compared contrast sensitivity, measured by a four-alternative forced choice (4AFC) objective printed test, and colour vision, measured by the Farnsworth-Munsell (FM) 100-hue and Farnsworth Panel D-15 tests. At least 15 normal subjects in each decade to age 80 were examined. Except for a small peak near 20–30, contrast sensitivity was stable until about age 50 after which losses first appeared at the highest spatial frequencies tested (4.8 cy/deg). The 4AFC scores were similar to those found in the UK. A well corrected aphake gave similar results as did the average scores for other normals, tested with a similar commercial test (Vistech). Vistech losses were less marked with a 4.8 m test distance. One man of 82, by contrast, had no high spatial frequency loss. In three age matched groups with and without small cataracts and drusen, cataract associated loss increased at mid and high spatial frequencies but the effect of drusen did not reach significance. FM 100-hue averages were much less constant across age. Twenty year olds had the best scores. Colour confusions were distributed randomly in children. Systematic blue-yellow losses appeared only after age 75. The data demonstrate the need for good test design to minimise age dependence in diagnostic tests. The high spatial frequency specific losses found in all contrast sensitivity tests are more likely to be due to physiological than optical factors since they are not universal, and they can occur without colour vision loss, with far viewing, without cataract or with intraocular lenses plus good correction.

Abstract: A total of 332 collections from 62 water bodies was analyzed for scaled chrysophytes with electron microscopy and correlated with limnological characteristics. The pH and specific conductance were the most important factors controlling the distribution of scaled chrysophytes; temperature and total phosphorus were of lesser importance. A mean of nine and seven taxa per collection were recorded at a pH of 5.5-6.0 and a specific conductance ~40 $S, respectively. Significantly fewer taxa per collection were found as the pH lowered below 5.5 or raised above 6.0 or as the specific conductance increased above 40 $S. Similar distributional patterns were found for the genera Mallomonas, Synura, and Spiniferomonas. A two-factor principal component model explained 70% of the total variance within the data set (n = 1,355). The first principal component explained 80 and 83% of the total variance within the pH and specific conductance variables. The pH and specific conductance also dominated the first principal component for each genus and for 23 of the 25 species tested. A cluster analysis, using within-group linkages, produced five groups of organisms that differed primarily with respect to their distribution along a pH gradient.

Abstract: A short PR interval, a delta wave, and attacks of paroxysmal tachycardia are the principal features of the WPW syndrome. A grossly irregular rhythm with bizzare QRS complexes at rates exceeding 180 per minute is one of the paroxysmal tachycardias characteristic of the WPW syndrome. This arrhythmia deserves special attention, because it is often misinterpretated as ventricular tachycardia. The interpretation is atrial fibrillation with varying degrees of ventricular fusion and phasic ventricular aberration. Prompt electrical cardioversion is indicated because, at times, ventricular fibrillation may result. Quinidine sulfate used prophylactically because of its negative dromotropic effect on the accessory pathway promotes A-V transmission via the A-V node.

Abstract: An example of junctional premature beats with concealed conduction has been presented. The arrhythmia mimics Mobitz Type II second-degree A-V block. Awareness of this arrhythmia when added to the fact that Mobitz Type II block is rarely seen with IWMI will prevent an improper or hasty diagnosis. Cardiac arrhythmias should be interpreted and managed in context of the clinical setting.
