Abstract

A software system named AutoMRISimQA was developed to monitor the daily performance of a wide-bore 3T scanner(MRI) which was designed and dedicated to radiotherapy simulation. The system can monitor the performance of the MRI simulator not only by using image quality indices such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), uniformity, ghosting and contrast but also performing a quick check of geometry accuracy as well as the external lasers quantitatively. It was implemented into the daily clinically workflow in 2013 and has been used for more than 10 years. It was also seamlessly integrated with QAtrack, allowing continuous monitoring of the consistency of the MRI simulator's performance., Comment: Accepted by conference ICCR 2024

2. The average bond-length of diatomic molecules in thermodynamical equilibrium depends on the volume

Abstract

In the framework of classical statistical mechanics and assuming the electronic ground-state Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we show in this work that a dependence of the equilibrium bond-length on the available volume is to be expected for a dilute gas of diatomic molecules. In a nutshell, this dependence is controlled by the relation between the potential well depth $D$ (through the factor $e^{-\beta D}$) and the quotient $L/R$ of the linear size of the container $L$ and the potential well width $R$. Using simplified analytical estimations, we predict that the equilibrium bond-length $\langle \rho \rangle$ is independent of $L$ for a range of volumes which is exponentially large on $\beta D$. At some point of the $L$ axis, $\langle \rho \rangle$ starts to increase and it eventually diverges, as it is to be expected, when $L \to \infty$, thus describing dissociated atoms. According to our estimations, it is possible that some diatomic molecules, such as halogens, could present volume dependence of their equilibrium bond-lengths for laboratory-size volumes at room temperature., Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

We measure the thermal conductivity of solid and molten tungsten using Steady State Temperature Differential Radiometry. We demonstrate that the thermal conductivity can be well described by application of Wiedemann-Franz Law to electrical resistivity data, thus suggesting the validity of Wiedemann-Franz Law to capture the electronic thermal conductivity of metals in their molten phase. We further support this conclusion using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with a machine-learned potential. Our results show that at these high temperatures, the vibrational contribution to thermal conductivity is negligible compared to the electronic component.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Coat color is a phenotypic trait that is affected by many functional genes. In addition, coat color is an important characteristic of breeds in livestock. This study aimed to determine functional genes for coat color patterns in Sumatran native cattle in Indonesia using a genome-wide association study method. Materials and Methods: A bovine single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) 50K BeadChip was used for the investigation. A total of 46 Sumatran native cattle of three colors as follows: Brown (36 animals), white (9 animals), and black (1 animal), were used as experimental animals. Results: Results showed that the SNP markers ARS-BFGL-NGS-75486 (p = 2.46×10-7) and BTB-01992588 (p = 1.06×10-5) were selected as two genetic markers for coat color variation in animals under study, which were located at the cytoplasmic FMR1-interacting protein 2 (CYFIP2) gene at BTA7 and small G protein signaling modulator 1(SGSM1) genes at BTA17, respectively. The polymorphic informative content values of both SNP markers were 0.33 (ARS-BFGL-NGS-75486) and 0.13 (BTB-01992588). In this study, a genetic marker for coat color patterns in Sumatran native cattle was obtained based on the haplotypes of both SNP markers. Conclusion: It can be concluded that CYFIP2 and SGSM1 are two coloration genes that affect the phenotype characteristics of Sumatran native cattle.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Introducing crossbred cattle in both lowland and highland regions is anticipated to enhance the productivity of indigenous breeds. Tropical environments present challenges such as acclimatization problems and decreased productivity. This study aims to test the influence of the interaction between genetic factors (crossbred cattle and local breeds) and environmental factors. This study is unique in its contribution of valuable insights into the potential interplay between tropical climate conditions and the genetic makeup of crossbred cattle. It sheds light on how this interaction influences the physiological and reproductive capabilities of the cattle, as well as the alterations in reproductive hormone secretion within this specific population. The results will serve as the main consideration for the development of crossbred cattle in tropical climates.METHODS: A fully randomized design incorporating three variables was employed in this study: altitude (highland and lowland), cattle breed (crossbred and local), and observation time. The study involved 357 cattle: 116 crossbred in the lowland, 67 crossbred in the highland, 93 local breed in the lowland, and 81 local breed in the highland. The environmental conditions, physiological status, hormone concentration, and reproductive performance were all part of the observations. Data was gathered every other day during each month, except for the hormone data, which was collected based on the oestrus cycle. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method was utilized to analyze hormone concentrations. The data was analyzed using factorial patterns with SPSS 26, with Duncan''s multiple-range test analysis.FINDINGS: The main finding of this study indicates that altitude influences the genetic traits of cattle relevant to the journal''s scope. Variations in altitude and breed significantly affect physiological parameters such as sweating rate, respiration, and pulse frequency, as well as hormone levels including follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. Furthermore, reproductive metrics such as days open, service per conception, and calving interval are also impacted. The interaction between altitude, breed, and observation time, significantly affected physiological status, hormone concentration, and reproductive performances. In cattle with high body weight, the peak sweating rate occurs at 08:00 post meridiem – 02:00 ante meridiem (21.83-27.92 second per centimeter square); while the low body weight occurs at 12:00 ante meridiem – 06:00 ante meridiem (16.92-32.68 seconds per square meter). Crossbred cattle in lowland areas and at 02:00 ante meridiem – 02:00 post meridiem have the highest respiratory frequency (59.08-63.29 times per minutes), and during the day have the highest pulse rate (69.43 times per minutes). During peak estrus, crossbred cattle in highland areas demonstrate increased concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (15.82 ng/mL) and luteinizing hormone (70.91 ng/mL). Crossbred cattle in the lowlands have longer days open (5.75 months), higher service per conception (1.62 times), and longer calving intervals (15.94 months).CONCLUSION: Crossbred cattle reared in lowland settings may encounter a decline in both physiological and reproductive capabilities, while indigenous cattle have the ability to adapt, resulting in superior physiological and reproductive performance compared to crossbred cattle. The physiology and reproduction of cattle are shaped by genetic factors and the tropical environment, including 1) Genetic influence, 2). Adaptation to altitude and climate, 3) Stress zones and breed differences, 4) Body temperature, 5) Reproductive performance,6) Hormone concentrations. It is recommended that the development of crossbred cattle be carried out in the highlands.

Abstract

Abstract This narrative review delves into the intricate interplay between the lungs and the kidneys, with a focus on elucidating the pathogenesis of diseases influenced by immunological factors, acid–base regulation, and blood gas disturbances, as well as assessing the effects of various therapeutic modalities on these interactions. Key disorders, such as anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease, the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), and Anti-neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies (ANCA) associated vasculitis (AAV), are also examined to shed light on their underlying mechanisms. This review also explores the relationship between acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute kidney injury (AKI), emphasizing how inflammatory mediators can lead to systemic damage and impact multiple organs. In ARDS, fluid overload exacerbates pulmonary edema, while imbalances in blood volume, such as hypovolemia or hypervolemia, can precipitate renal dysfunction. The review highlights how mechanical ventilation strategies can compromise renal blood flow, trigger systemic inflammation, and induce hemodynamic and neurohormonal alterations, all contributing to lung and kidney damage. The impact of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) on lung–kidney interactions is evaluated, highlighting its role in severe respiratory failure and its renal implications. Emerging therapies, such as mesenchymal stem cells and extracellular vesicles, are discussed as promising avenues to mitigate organ damage and enhance outcomes in critically ill patients. Overall, this review offers a nuanced exploration of lung–kidney dynamics, bridging historical insights with contemporary perspectives. It underscores the clinical significance of these interactions in critically ill patients and advocates for integrated management approaches to optimize patient outcomes.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: There is little consensus and high heterogeneity on the optimal set of relevant clinical outcomes in research studies regarding extubation in neurocritical care patients with brain injury undergoing mechanical ventilation. The aims of this study are to: (1) develop a core outcome set (COS) and (2) reach consensus on a hierarchical composite endpoint for such studies. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study will include a broadly representative, international panel of stakeholders with research and clinical expertise in this field and will involve four stages: (1) a scoping review to generate an initial list of outcomes represented in the literature, (2) an investigator meeting to review the outcomes for inclusion in the Delphi surveys, (3) four rounds of online Delphi consensus-building surveys and (4) online consensus meetings to finalise the COS and hierarchical composite endpoint. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study received ethical approval from the French Society of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine Institutional Review Board (SFAR CERAR-IRB 00010254-2023-029). The study results will be disseminated through communication to stakeholders, publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and presentations at conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: This study is registered with the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) Initiative.

Abstract

Abstract The global prevalence rate for congenital hydrocephalus (CH) is approximately one out of every five hundred births with multifaceted predisposing factors at play. Genetic influences stand as a major contributor to CH pathogenesis, and epidemiological evidence suggests their involvement in up to 40% of all cases observed globally. Knowledge about an individual’s genetic susceptibility can significantly improve prognostic precision while aiding clinical decision-making processes. However, the precise genetic etiology has only been pinpointed in fewer than 5% of human instances. More occurrences of CH cases are required for comprehensive gene sequencing aimed at uncovering additional potential genetic loci. A deeper comprehension of its underlying genetics may offer invaluable insights into the molecular and cellular basis of this brain disorder. This review provides a summary of pertinent genes identified through gene sequencing technologies in humans, in addition to the 4 genes currently associated with CH (two X-linked genes L1CAM and AP1S2, two autosomal recessive MPDZ and CCDC88C). Others predominantly participate in aqueduct abnormalities, ciliary movement, and nervous system development. The prospective CH-related genes revealed through animal model gene-editing techniques are further outlined, focusing mainly on 4 pathways, namely cilia synthesis and movement, ion channels and transportation, Reissner’s fiber (RF) synthesis, cell apoptosis, and neurogenesis. Notably, the proper functioning of motile cilia provides significant impulsion for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation within the brain ventricles while mutations in cilia-related genes constitute a primary cause underlying this condition. So far, only a limited number of CH-associated genes have been identified in humans. The integration of genotype and phenotype for disease diagnosis represents a new trend in the medical field. Animal models provide insights into the pathogenesis of CH and contribute to our understanding of its association with related complications, such as renal cysts, scoliosis, and cardiomyopathy, as these genes may also play a role in the development of these diseases. Genes discovered in animals present potential targets for new treatments but require further validation through future human studies.

Abstract

In this paper, we look into the minimum obstacle displacement (MOD) planning problem from a mobile robot motion planning perspective. This problem finds an optimal path to goal by displacing movable obstacles when no path exists due to collision with obstacles. However this problem is computationally expensive and grows exponentially in the size of number of movable obstacles. Abstract

OBJECTIVES:. Anemia has been associated with an increased risk of both cardiac arrest and stroke, frequent complications of COVID-19. The effect of hemoglobin level at ICU admission on a composite outcome of cardiac arrest or stroke in an international cohort of COVID-19 patients was investigated. DESIGN:. Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected database. SETTING:. A registry of COVID-19 patients admitted to ICUs at over 370 international sites was reviewed for patients diagnosed with cardiac arrest or stroke up to 30 days after ICU admission. Anemia was defined as: normal (hemoglobin ≥ 12.0 g/dL for women, ≥ 13.5 g/dL for men), mild (hemoglobin 10.0–11.9 g/dL for women, 10.0–13.4 g/dL for men), moderate (hemoglobin ≥ 8.0 and < 10.0 g/dL for women and men), and severe (hemoglobin < 8.0 g/dL for women and men). PATIENTS:. Patients older than 18 years with acute COVID-19 infection in the ICU. INTERVENTIONS:. None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:. Of 6926 patients (median age = 59 yr, male = 65%), 760 patients (11.0%) experienced stroke (2.0%) and/or cardiac arrest (9.4%). Cardiac arrest or stroke was more common in patients with low hemoglobin, occurring in 12.8% of patients with normal hemoglobin, 13.3% of patients with mild anemia, and 16.7% of patients with moderate/severe anemia. Time to stroke or cardiac arrest by anemia status was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression with death as a competing risk. Covariates selected through clinical knowledge were age, sex, comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cardiac or neurologic conditions), pandemic era, country income, mechanical ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Moderate/severe anemia was associated with a higher risk of cardiac arrest or stroke (hazard ratio, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.05–1.67). CONCLUSIONS:. In an international registry of ICU patients with COVID-19, moderate/severe anemia was associated with increased hazard of cardiac arrest or stroke.
