We prove local and global inverse theorems for general $3$-wise correlations over pairwise-connected distributions. Let $\mu$ be a distribution over $\Sigma \times \Gamma \times \Phi$ such that the supports of $\mu_{xy}$, $\mu_{xz}$, and $\mu_{yz}$ are all connected, and let $f: \Sigma^n \to \mathbb{C}$, $g: \Gamma^n \to \mathbb{C}$, $h: \Phi^n \to \mathbb{C}$ be $1$-bounded functions satisfying \[ \left|\mathbb{E}_{(x,y,z) \sim \mu^{\otimes n}}[f(x)g(y)h(z)]\right| \geq \varepsilon. \] In this setting, our local inverse theorem asserts that there is $\delta :=\textsf{exp}(-\varepsilon^{-O_{\mu}(1)})$ such that with probability at least $\delta$, a random restriction of $f$ down to $\delta n$ coordinates $\delta$-correlates to a product function. To get a global inverse theorem, we prove a restriction inverse theorem for general product functions, stating that if a random restriction of $f$ down to $\delta n$ coordinates is $\delta$-correlated with a product function with probability at least $\delta$, then $f$ is $2^{-\textsf{poly}(\log(1/\delta))}$-correlated with a function of the form $L\cdot P$, where $L$ is a function of degree $\textsf{poly}(1/\delta)$, $\|L\|_2\leq 1$, and $P$ is a product function. We show applications to property testing and to additive combinatorics. In particular, we show the following result via a density increment argument. Let $\Sigma$ be a finite set and $S \subseteq \Sigma \times \Sigma \times \Sigma$ such that: (1) $(x, x, x) \in S$ for all $x \in S$, and (2) the supports of $S_{xy}$, $S_{xz}$, and $S_{yz}$ are all connected. Then, any set $A \subseteq \Sigma^n$ with $|\Sigma|^{-n}|A| \geq \Omega((\log \log \log n)^{-c})$ contains $x, y, z \in A$, not all equal, such that $(x_i,y_i,z_i) \in S$ for all $i$. This gives the first reasonable bounds for the restricted 3-AP problem over finite fields.

We prove that any subset $A \subseteq [3]^n$ with $3^{-n}|A| \ge (\log\log\log\log n)^{-c}$ contains a combinatorial line of length $3$, i.e., $x, y, z \in A$, not all equal, with $x_i=y_i=z_i$ or $(x_i,y_i,z_i)=(0,1,2)$ for all $i = 1, 2, \dots, n$. This improves on the previous best bound of $3^{-n}|A| \ge \Omega((\log^* n)^{-1/2})$ of [D.H.J. Polymath, Ann. of Math. 2012].

We propose a framework of algorithm vs. hardness for all Max-CSPs and demonstrate it for a large class of predicates. This framework extends the work of Raghavendra [STOC, 2008], who showed a similar result for almost satisfiable Max-CSPs. Our framework is based on a new hybrid approximation algorithm, which uses a combination of the Gaussian elimination technique (i.e., solving a system of linear equations over an Abelian group) and the semidefinite programming relaxation. We complement our algorithm with a matching dictator vs. quasirandom test that has perfect completeness. The analysis of our dictator vs. quasirandom test is based on a novel invariance principle, which we call the mixed invariance principle. Our mixed invariance principle is an extension of the invariance principle of Mossel, O'Donnell and Oleszkiewicz [Annals of Mathematics, 2010] which plays a crucial role in Raghavendra's work. The mixed invariance principle allows one to relate 3-wise correlations over discrete probability spaces with expectations over spaces that are a mixture of Guassian spaces and Abelian groups, and may be of independent interest., Comment: 85 pages

In a $3$-$\mathsf{XOR}$ game $\mathcal{G}$, the verifier samples a challenge $(x,y,z)\sim \mu$ where $\mu$ is a probability distribution over $\Sigma\times\Gamma\times\Phi$, and a map $t\colon \Sigma\times\Gamma\times\Phi\to\mathcal{A}$ for a finite Abelian group $\mathcal{A}$ defining a constraint. The verifier sends the questions $x$, $y$ and $z$ to the players Alice, Bob and Charlie respectively, receives answers $f(x)$, $g(y)$ and $h(z)$ that are elements in $\mathcal{A}$ and accepts if $f(x)+g(y)+h(z) = t(x,y,z)$. The value, $\mathsf{val}(\mathcal{G})$, of the game is defined to be the maximum probability the verifier accepts over all players' strategies. We show that if $\mathcal{G}$ is a $3$-$\mathsf{XOR}$ game with value strictly less than $1$, whose underlying distribution over questions $\mu$ does not admit Abelian embeddings into $(\mathbb{Z},+)$, then the value of the $n$-fold repetition of $\mathcal{G}$ is exponentially decaying. That is, there exists $c=c(\mathcal{G})>0$ such that $\mathsf{val}(\mathcal{G}^{\otimes n})\leq 2^{-cn}$. This extends a previous result of [Braverman-Khot-Minzer, FOCS 2023] showing exponential decay for the GHZ game. Our proof combines tools from additive combinatorics and tools from discrete Fourier analysis.

We construct 2-query, quasi-linear size probabilistically checkable proofs (PCPs) with arbitrarily small constant soundness, improving upon Dinur's 2-query quasi-linear size PCPs with soundness $1-\Omega(1)$. As an immediate corollary, we get that under the exponential time hypothesis, for all $\epsilon>0$ no approximation algorithm for $3$-SAT can obtain an approximation ratio of $7/8+\epsilon$ in time $2^{n/\log^C n}$, where $C$ is a constant depending on $\epsilon$. Our result builds on a recent line of independent works by Bafna, Lifshitz and Minzer, and Dikstein, Dinur and Lubotzky, that showed the existence of linear size direct product testers with small soundness. The main new ingredient in our proof is a technique that embeds a given 2-CSP into a 2-CSP on a prescribed graph, provided that the latter is a graph underlying a sufficiently good high-dimensional expander (HDX). We achieve this by establishing a novel connection between PCPs and fault-tolerant distributed computing, more precisely, to the almost-everywhere reliable transmission problem introduced by Dwork, Peleg, Pippenger and Upfal (1986). We instantiate this connection by showing that graphs underlying HDXs admit routing protocols that are tolerant to adversarial edge corruptions, also improving upon the state of the art constructions of sparse edge-fault-tolerant networks in the process. Our PCP construction requires variants of the aforementioned direct product testers with poly-logarithmic degree. We show that for all $\varepsilon>0$, for sufficiently large prime power $q$, for all $\delta>0$, it is NP-hard to distinguish whether a 2-Prover-1-Round projection game with alphabet size $q$ has value at least $1-\delta$, or value at most $1/q^{(1-\epsilon)}$. This establishes a nearly optimal alphabet-to-soundness tradeoff for 2-query PCPs with alphabet size $q$, improving upon a result of [Chan 2016]. Our result has the following implications: 1) Near optimal hardness for Quadratic Programming: it is NP-hard to approximate the value of a given Boolean Quadratic Program within factor $(\log n)^{(1 - o(1))}$ under quasi-polynomial time reductions. This result improves a result of [Khot-Safra 2013] and nearly matches the performance of the best known approximation algorithm [Megrestki 2001, Nemirovski-Roos-Terlaky 1999 Charikar-Wirth 2004] that achieves a factor of $O(\log n)$. 2) Bounded degree 2-CSP's: under randomized reductions, for sufficiently large $d>0$, it is NP-hard to approximate the value of 2-CSPs in which each variable appears in at most d constraints within factor $(1-o(1))d/2$ improving upon a recent result of [Lee-Manurangsi 2023]. 3) Improved hardness results for connectivity problems: using results of [Laekhanukit 2014] and [Manurangsi 2019], we deduce improved hardness results for the Rooted $k$-Connectivity Problem, the Vertex-Connectivity Survivable Network Design Problem and the Vertex-Connectivity $k$-Route Cut Problem., Comment: STOC 2024, 91 pages

The (low soundness) linearity testing problem for the middle slice of the Boolean cube is as follows. Let $\varepsilon>0$ and $f$ be a function on the middle slice on the Boolean cube, such that when choosing a uniformly random quadruple $(x,y,z ,x\oplus y\oplus z)$ of vectors of $2n$ bits with exactly $n$ ones, the probability that $f(x\oplus y \oplus z) = f(x) \oplus f(y) \oplus f(z)$ is at least $1/2+\varepsilon$. The linearity testing problem, posed by David, Dinur, Goldenberg, Kindler and Shinkar, asks whether there must be an actual linear function that agrees with $f$ on $1/2+\varepsilon'$ fraction of the inputs, where $\varepsilon' = \varepsilon'(\varepsilon)>0$. We solve this problem, showing that $f$ must indeed be correlated with a linear function. To do so, we prove a dense model theorem for the middle slice of the Boolean hypercube for Gowers uniformity norms. Specifically, we show that for every $k\in\mathbb{N}$, the normalized indicator function of the middle slice of the Boolean hypercube $\{0,1\}^{2n}$ is close in Gowers norm to the normalized indicator function of the union of all slices with weight $t = n\pmod{2^{k-1}}$. Using our techniques we also give a more general `low degree test' and a biased rank theorem for the slice.

Let $X$ be a $d$-dimensional simplicial complex. A function $F\colon X(k)\to \{0,1\}^k$ is said to be a direct product function if there exists a function $f\colon X(1)\to \{0,1\}$ such that $F(\sigma) = (f(\sigma_1), \ldots, f(\sigma_k))$ for each $k$-face $\sigma$. In an effort to simplify components of the PCP theorem, Goldreich and Safra introduced the problem of direct product testing, which asks whether one can test if $F\colon X(k)\to \{0,1\}^k$ is correlated with a direct product function by querying $F$ on only $2$ inputs. Dinur and Kaufman conjectured that there exist bounded degree complexes with a direct product test in the small soundness regime. We resolve their conjecture by showing that for all $\delta>0$, there exists a family of high-dimensional expanders with degree $O_{\delta}(1)$ and a $2$-query direct product tester with soundness $\delta$. We use the characterization given by a subset of the authors and independently by Dikstein and Dinur, who showed that some form of non-Abelian coboundary expansion (which they called "Unique-Games coboundary expansion") is a necessary and sufficient condition for a complex to admit such direct product testers. Our main technical contribution is a general technique for showing coboundary expansion of complexes with coefficients in a non-Abelian group. This allows us to prove that the high dimensional expanders constructed by Chapman and Lubotzky satisfies the necessary conditions, thus admitting a 2-query direct product tester with small soundness.

If $G$ is a group, we say a subset $S$ of $G$ is product-free if the equation $xy=z$ has no solutions with $x,y,z \in S$. For $D \in \mathbb{N}$, a group $G$ is said to be $D$-quasirandom if the minimal dimension of a nontrivial complex irreducible representation of $G$ is at least $D$. Gowers showed that in a $D$-quasirandom finite group $G$, the maximal size of a product-free set is at most $|G|/D^{1/3}$. This disproved a longstanding conjecture of Babai and S\'os from 1985. For the special unitary group, $G=SU(n)$, Gowers observed that his argument yields an upper bound of $n^{-1/3}$ on the measure of a measurable product-free subset. In this paper, we improve Gowers' upper bound to $\exp(-cn^{1/3})$, where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. In fact, we establish something stronger, namely, product-mixing for measurable subsets of $SU(n)$ with measure at least $\exp(-cn^{1/3})$; for this product-mixing result, the $n^{1/3}$ in the exponent is sharp. Our approach involves introducing novel hypercontractive inequalities, which imply that the non-Abelian Fourier spectrum of the indicator function of a small set concentrates on high-dimensional irreducible representations. Our hypercontractive inequalities are obtained via methods from representation theory, harmonic analysis, random matrix theory and differential geometry. We generalize our hypercontractive inequalities from $SU(n)$ to an arbitrary $D$-quasirandom compact connected Lie group for $D$ at least an absolute constant, thereby extending our results on product-free sets to such groups. We also demonstrate various other applications of our inequalities to geometry (viz., non-Abelian Brunn-Minkowski type inequalities), mixing times, and the theory of growth in compact Lie groups., Comment: References updated

In the $t$-online-erasure model in property testing, an adversary is allowed to erase $t$ values of a queried function for each query the tester makes. This model was recently formulated by Kalemaj, Raskhodnikova andVarma, who showed that the properties of linearity of functions as well as quadraticity can be tested in$O_t(1)$ many queries: $O(\log (t))$ for linearity and $2^{2^{O(t)}}$ for quadraticity. They asked whether the more general property of low-degreeness can be tested in the online erasure model, whether better testers exist for quadraticity, and if similar results hold when ``erasures'' are replaced with ``corruptions''. We show that, in the $t$-online-erasure model, for a prime power $q$, given query access to a function $f: \mathbb{F}_q^n \xrightarrow[]{} \mathbb{F}_q$, one can distinguish in $\mathrm{poly}(\log^{d+q}(t)/\delta)$ queries between the case that $f$ is degree at most $d$, and the case that $f$ is $\delta$-far from any degree $d$ function (with respect to the fractional hamming distance). This answers the aforementioned questions and brings the query complexity to nearly match the query complexity of low-degree testing in the classical property testing model. Our results are based on the observation that the property of low-degreeness admits a large and versatile family of query efficient testers. Our testers operates by querying a uniformly random, sufficiently large set of points in a large enough affine subspace, and finding a tester for low-degreeness that only utilizes queries from that set of points. We believe that this tester may find other applications to algorithms in the online-erasure model or other related models, and may be of independent interest., Comment: 18 pages

A $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $X$ is said to support a direct product tester if any locally consistent function defined on its $k$-faces (where $k\ll d$) necessarily come from a function over its vertices. More precisely, a direct product tester has a distribution $\mu$ over pairs of $k$-faces $(A,A')$, and given query access to $F\colon X(k)\to\{0,1\}^k$ it samples $(A,A')\sim \mu$ and checks that $F[A]|_{A\cap A'} = F[A']|_{A\cap A'}$. The tester should have (1) the ``completeness property'', meaning that any assignment $F$ which is a direct product assignment passes the test with probability $1$, and (2) the ``soundness property'', meaning that if $F$ passes the test with probability $s$, then $F$ must be correlated with a direct product function. Dinur and Kaufman showed that a sufficiently good spectral expanding complex $X$ admits a direct product tester in the ``high soundness'' regime where $s$ is close to $1$. They asked whether there are high dimensional expanders that support direct product tests in the ``low soundness'', when $s$ is close to $0$. We give a characterization of high-dimensional expanders that support a direct product tester in the low soundness regime. We show that spectral expansion is insufficient, and the complex must additionally satisfy a variant of coboundary expansion, which we refer to as \emph{Unique-Games coboundary expanders}. Conversely, we show that this property is also sufficient to get direct product testers. This property can be seen as a high-dimensional generalization of the standard notion of coboundary expansion over non-Abelian groups for 2-dimensional complexes. It asserts that any locally consistent Unique-Games instance obtained using the low-level faces of the complex, must admit a good global solution.

For a prime $p$, a restricted arithmetic progression in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ is a triplet of vectors $x, x+a, x+2a$ in which the common difference $a$ is a non-zero element from $\{0,1,2\}^n$. What is the size of the largest $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ that is free of restricted arithmetic progressions? We show that the density of any such set is at most $\frac{C}{(\log\log\log n)^c}$, where $c,C>0$ depend only on $p$, giving the first reasonable bounds for the density of such sets. Previously, the best known bound was $O(1/\log^{*} n)$, which follows from the density Hales-Jewett theorem.

We prove a stability result for general $3$-wise correlations over distributions satisfying mild connectivity properties. More concretely, we show that if $\Sigma,\Gamma$ and $\Phi$ are alphabets of constant size, and $\mu$ is a pairwise connected distribution over $\Sigma\times\Gamma\times\Phi$ with no $(\mathbb{Z},+)$ embeddings in which the probability of each atom is $\Omega(1)$, then the following holds. Any triplets of $1$-bounded functions $f\colon \Sigma^n\to\mathbb{C}$, $g\colon \Gamma^n\to\mathbb{C}$, $h\colon \Phi^n\to\mathbb{C}$ satisfying \[ \left|\mathbb{E}_{(x,y,z)\sim \mu^{\otimes n}}\big[f(x)g(y)h(z)\big]\right|\geq \varepsilon \] must arise from an Abelian group associated with the distribution $\mu$. More specifically, we show that there is an Abelian group $(H,+)$ of constant size such that for any such $f,g$ and $h$, the function $f$ (and similarly $g$ and $h$) is correlated with a function of the form $\tilde{f}(x) = \chi(\sigma(x_1),\ldots,\sigma(x_n)) L (x)$, where $\sigma\colon \Sigma \to H$ is some map, $\chi\in \hat{H}^{\otimes n}$ is a character, and $L\colon \Sigma^n\to\mathbb{C}$ is a low-degree function with bounded $2$-norm. En route we prove a few additional results that may be of independent interest, such as an improved direct product theorem, as well as a result we refer to as a ``restriction inverse theorem'' about the structure of functions that, under random restrictions, with noticeable probability have significant correlation with a product function. In companion papers, we show applications of our results to the fields of Probabilistically Checkable Proofs, as well as various areas in discrete mathematics such as extremal combinatorics and additive combinatorics.

The theory of influences in product measures has profound applications in theoretical computer science, combinatorics, and discrete probability. This deep theory is intimately connected to functional inequalities and to the Fourier analysis of discrete groups. Originally, influences of functions were motivated by the study of social choice theory, wherein a Boolean function represents a voting scheme, its inputs represent the votes, and its output represents the outcome of the elections. Thus, product measures represent a scenario in which the votes of the parties are randomly and independently distributed, which is often far from the truth in real-life scenarios. We begin to develop the theory of influences for more general measures under mixing or correlation decay conditions. More specifically, we prove analogues of the KKL and Talagrand influence theorems for Markov Random Fields on bounded degree graphs with correlation decay. We show how some of the original applications of the theory of in terms of voting and coalitions extend to general measures with correlation decay. Our results thus shed light both on voting with correlated voters and on the behavior of general functions of Markov Random Fields (also called ``spin-systems") with correlation decay.

We prove that there exists a constant $\gamma_{\mathrm{crit}}\approx .17566$ such that if $G\sim \mathbb{G}(n,1/2)$ then for any $\varepsilon > 0$ with high probability $G$ has a equipartition such that each vertex has $(\gamma_{\mathrm{crit}}-\varepsilon)\sqrt{n}$ more neighbors in its own part than in the other part and with high probability no such partition exists for a separation of $(\gamma_{\mathrm{crit}}+\varepsilon)\sqrt{n}$. The proof involves a number of tools ranging from isoperimetric results on vertex-transitive sets of graphs coming from Boolean functions, switchings, degree enumeration formulas, and the second moment method. Our results substantially strengthen recent work of Ferber, Kwan, Narayanan, and the last two authors on a conjecture of F\"uredi from 1988 and in particular prove the existence of fully-friendly bisections in $\mathbb{G}(n,1/2)$, Comment: 51 pages

We study the complexity of affine Unique-Games (UG) over globally hypercontractive graphs, which are graphs that are not small set expanders but admit a useful and succinct characterization of all small sets that violate the small-set expansion property. This class of graphs includes the Johnson and Grassmann graphs, which have played a pivotal role in recent PCP constructions for UG, and their generalizations via high-dimensional expanders. Our algorithm shows how to round "low-entropy" solutions to sum-of-squares (SoS) semidefinite programs, broadly extending the algorithmic framework of [BBKSS'21]. We give a new rounding scheme for SoS, which eliminates global correlations in a given pseudodistribution so that it retains various good properties even after conditioning. Getting structural control over a pseudodistribution after conditioning is a fundamental challenge in many SoS based algorithms. Due to these challenges, [BBKSS] were not able to establish strong algorithms for globally hypercontractive graphs, and could only do so for certifiable small-set expanders. Our results improve upon the results of [BBKSS] in various aspects: we are able to deal with instances with arbitrarily small (but constant) completeness, and most importantly, their algorithm gets a soundness guarantee that degrades with other parameters of the graph (which in all PCP constructions grow with the alphabet size), whereas our doesn't. Our result suggests that UG is easy on globally hypercontractive graphs, and therefore highlights the importance of graphs that lack such a characterization in the context of PCP reductions for UG.

A local tester for an error correcting code $C\subseteq \Sigma^{n}$ is a tester that makes $Q$ oracle queries to a given word $w\in \Sigma^n$ and decides to accept or reject the word $w$. An optimal local tester is a local tester that has the additional properties of completeness and optimal soundness. By completeness, we mean that the tester must accept with probability $1$ if $w\in C$. By optimal soundness, we mean that if the tester accepts with probability at least $1-\epsilon$ (where $\epsilon$ is small), then it must be the case that $w$ is $O(\epsilon/Q)$-close to some codeword $c\in C$ in Hamming distance. We show that Generalized Reed-Muller codes admit optimal testers with $Q = (3q)^{\lceil{ \frac{d+1}{q-1}\rceil}+O(1)}$ queries. Here, for a prime power $q = p^{k}$, the Generalized Reed-Muller code, RM[n,q,d], consists of the evaluations of all $n$-variate degree $d$ polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Previously, no tester achieving this query complexity was known, and the best known testers due to Haramaty, Shpilka and Sudan(which is optimal) and due to Ron-Zewi and Sudan(which was not known to be optimal) both required $q^{\lceil{\frac{d+1}{q-q/p} \rceil}}$ queries. Our tester achieves query complexity which is polynomially better than by a power of $p/(p-1)$, which is nearly the best query complexity possible for generalized Reed-Muller codes. The tester we analyze is due to Ron-Zewi and Sudan, and we show that their basic tester is in fact optimal. Our methods are more general and also allow us to prove that a wide class of testers, which follow the form of the Ron-Zewi and Sudan tester, are optimal. This result applies to testers for all affine-invariant codes (which are not necessarily generalized Reed-Muller codes)., Comment: 42 pages, 8 page appendix

We prove that there exists a constant $c_0$ such that for any $t \in \mathbb{N}$ and any $n\geq c_0 t$, if $A \subset S_n$ is a $t$-intersecting family of permutations then$|A|\leq (n-t)!$. Furthermore, if $|A|\ge 0.75(n-t)!$ then there exist $i_1,\ldots,i_t$ and $j_1,\ldots,j_t$ such that $\sigma(i_1)=j_1,\ldots,\sigma(i_t)=j_t$ holds for any $\sigma \in A$. This shows that the conjectures of Deza and Frankl (1977) and of Cameron (1988) on $t$-intersecting families of permutations hold for all $t \leq c_0 n$. Our proof method, based on hypercontractivity for global functions, does not use the specific structure of permutations, and applies in general to $t$-intersecting sub-families of `pseudorandom' families in $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}^n$, like $S_n$.

We show that the value of the $n$-fold repeated GHZ game is at most $2^{-\Omega(n)}$, improving upon the polynomial bound established by Holmgren and Raz. Our result is established via a reduction to approximate subgroup type questions from additive combinatorics.

A regular graph $G = (V,E)$ is an $(\varepsilon,\gamma)$ small-set expander if for any set of vertices of fractional size at most $\varepsilon$, at least $\gamma$ of the edges that are adjacent to it go outside. In this paper, we give a unified approach to several known complexity-theoretic results on small-set expanders. In particular, we show: 1. Max-Cut: we show that if a regular graph $G = (V,E)$ is an $(\varepsilon,\gamma)$ small-set expander that contains a cut of fractional size at least $1-\delta$, then one can find in $G$ a cut of fractional size at least $1-O\left(\frac{\delta}{\varepsilon\gamma^6}\right)$ in polynomial time. 2. Improved spectral partitioning, Cheeger's inequality and the parallel repetition theorem over small-set expanders. The general form of each one of these results involves square-root loss that comes from certain rounding procedure, and we show how this can be avoided over small set expanders. Our main idea is to project a high dimensional vector solution into a low-dimensional space while roughly maintaining $\ell_2^2$ distances, and then perform a pre-processing step using low-dimensional geometry and the properties of $\ell_2^2$ distances over it. This pre-processing leverages the small-set expansion property of the graph to transform a vector valued solution to a different vector valued solution with additional structural properties, which give rise to more efficient integral-solution rounding schemes.

The Cube versus Cube test is a variant of the well-known Plane versus Plane test of Raz and Safra, in which to each $3$-dimensional affine subspace $C$ of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, a polynomial of degree at most $d$, $T(C)$, is assigned in a somewhat locally consistent manner: taking two cubes $C_1, C_2$ that intersect in a plane uniformly at random, the probability that $T(C_1)$ and $T(C_2)$ agree on $C_1\cap C_2$ is at least some $\epsilon$. An element of interest is the soundness threshold of this test, i.e. the smallest value of $\epsilon$, such that this amount of local consistency implies a global structure; namely, that there is a global degree $d$ function $g$ such that $g|_{C} \equiv T(C)$ for at least $\Omega(\epsilon)$ fraction of the cubes. We show that the cube versus cube low degree test has soundness ${\sf poly}(d)/q$. This result achieves the optimal dependence on $q$ for soundness in low degree testing and improves upon previous soundness results of ${\sf poly}(d)/q^{1/2}$ due to Bhangale, Dinur and Navon., Comment: SODA 2023, 19 pages

We show improved monotonicity testers for the Boolean hypercube under the $p$-biased measure, as well as over the hypergrid $[m]^n$. Our results are: 1. For any $p\in (0,1)$, for the $p$-biased hypercube we show a non-adaptive tester that makes $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n}/\varepsilon^2)$ queries, accepts monotone functions with probability $1$ and rejects functions that are $\varepsilon$-far from monotone with probability at least $2/3$. 2. For all $m\in\mathbb{N}$, we show an $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n}m^3/\varepsilon^2)$ query monotonicity tester over $[m]^n$. We also establish corresponding directed isoperimetric inequalities in these domains. Previously, the best known tester due to Black, Chakrabarty and Seshadhri had $\Omega(n^{5/6})$ query complexity. Our results are optimal up to poly-logarithmic factors and the dependency on $m$. Our proof uses a notion of monotone embeddings of measures into the Boolean hypercube that can be used to reduce the problem of monotonicity testing over an arbitrary product domains to the Boolean cube. The embedding maps a function over a product domain of dimension $n$ into a function over a Boolean cube of a larger dimension $n'$, while preserving its distance from being monotone; an embedding is considered efficient if $n'$ is not much larger than $n$, and we show how to construct efficient embeddings in the above mentioned settings.

A subset $A$ of a group $G$ is called product-free if there is no solution to $a=bc$ with $a,b,c$ all in $A$. It is easy to see that the largest product-free subset of the symmetric group $S_n$ is obtained by taking the set of all odd permutations, i.e. $S_n \setminus A_n$, where $A_n$ is the alternating group. By contrast, it is a long-standing open problem to find the largest product-free subset of $A_n$. We solve this problem for large $n$, showing that the maximum size is achieved by the previously conjectured extremal examples, namely families of the form $\{\pi~|~\pi(x)\in I, \pi(I)\cap I=\emptyset\}$ and their inverses. Moreover, we show that the maximum size is only achieved by these extremal examples, and we have stability: any product-free subset of $A_n$ of nearly maximum size is structurally close to an extremal example. Our proof uses a combination of tools from Combinatorics and Non-abelian Fourier Analysis, including a crucial new ingredient exploiting some recent theory developed by Filmus, Kindler, Liftshitz and Minzer for global hypercontractivity on the symmetric group.

We give an alternative, simple method to prove isoperimetric inequalities over the hypercube. In particular, we show: 1. An elementary proof of classical isoperimetric inequalities of Talagrand, as well as a stronger isoperimetric result conjectured by Talagrand and recently proved by Eldan and Gross. 2. A strengthening of the Friedgut junta theorem, asserting that if the $p$-moment of the sensitivity of a function is constant for some $1/2 + \varepsilon\leq p\leq 1$, then the function is close to a junta. In this language, Friedgut's theorem is the special case that $p=1$.

The problem of testing low-degree polynomials has received significant attention over the years due to its importance in theoretical computer science, and in particular in complexity theory. The problem is specified by three parameters: field size $q$, degree $d$ and proximity parameter $\delta$, and the goal is to design a tester making as few as possible queries to a given function, which is able to distinguish between the case the given function has degree at most $d$, and the case the given function is $\delta$-far from any degree $d$ function. A tester is called optimal if it makes $O(q^d+1/\delta)$ queries (which are known to be necessary). For the field of size $q$, the natural $t$-flat tester was shown to be optimal first by Bhattacharyya et al. for $q=2$, and later by Haramaty et al. for all prime powers $q$. The dependency on the field size, however, is a tower-type function. We improve the results above, showing that the dependency on the field size is polynomial. Our approach also applies in the more general setting of lifted affine invariant codes, and is based on studying the structure of the collection of erroneous subspaces. i.e. subspaces $A$ such that $f|_{A}$ has degree greater than $d$. Towards this end, we observe that these sets are poorly expanding in the affine version of the Grassmann graph and use that to establish structural results on them via global hypercontractivity. We then use this structure to perform local correction on $f$.

Given an alphabet size $m\in\mathbb{N}$ thought of as a constant, and $\vec{k} = (k_1,\ldots,k_m)$ whose entries sum of up $n$, the $\vec{k}$-multi-slice is the set of vectors $x\in [m]^n$ in which each symbol $i\in [m]$ appears precisely $k_i$ times. We show an invariance principle for low-degree functions over the multi-slice, to functions over the product space $([m]^n,\mu^n)$ in which $\mu(i) = k_i/n$. This answers a question raised by Filmus et al. As applications of the invariance principle, we show: 1. An analogue of the "dictatorship test implies computational hardness" paradigm for problems with perfect completeness, for a certain class of dictatorship tests. Our computational hardness is proved assuming a recent strengthening of the Unique-Games Conjecture, called the Rich $2$-to-$1$ Games Conjecture. Using this analogue, we show that assuming the Rich $2$-to-$1$ Games Conjecture, (a) there is an $r$-ary CSP $\mathcal{P}_r$ for which it is NP-hard to distinguish satisfiable instances of the CSP and instances that are at most $\frac{2r+1}{2^r} + o(1)$ satisfiable, and (b) hardness of distinguishing $3$-colorable graphs, and graphs that do not contain an independent set of size $o(1)$. 2. A reduction of the problem of studying expectations of products of functions on the multi-slice to studying expectations of products of functions on correlated, product spaces. In particular, we are able to deduce analogues of the Gaussian bounds from \cite{MosselGaussian} for the multi-slice. 3. In a companion paper, we show further applications of our invariance principle in extremal combinatorics, and more specifically to proving removal lemmas of a wide family of hypergraphs $H$ called $\zeta$-forests, which is a natural extension of the well-studied case of matchings.

For a function $g\colon\{0,1\}^m\to\{0,1\}$, a function $f\colon \{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}$ is called a $g$-polymorphism if their actions commute: $f(g(\mathsf{row}_1(Z)),\ldots,g(\mathsf{row}_n(Z))) = g(f(\mathsf{col}_1(Z)),\ldots,f(\mathsf{col}_m(Z)))$ for all $Z\in\{0,1\}^{n\times m}$. The function $f$ is called an approximate polymorphism if this equality holds with probability close to $1$, when $Z$ is sampled uniformly. We study the structure of exact polymorphisms as well as approximate polymorphisms. Our results include: - We prove that an approximate polymorphism $f$ must be close to an exact polymorphism; - We give a characterization of exact polymorphisms, showing that besides trivial cases, only the functions $g = \mathsf{AND}, \mathsf{XOR}, \mathsf{OR}, \mathsf{NXOR}$ admit non-trivial exact polymorphisms. We also study the approximate polymorphism problem in the list-decoding regime (i.e., when the probability equality holds is not close to $1$, but is bounded away from some value). We show that if $f(x \land y) = f(x) \land f(y)$ with probability larger than $s_\land \approx 0.815$ then $f$ correlates with some low-degree character, and $s_\land$ is the optimal threshold for this property. Our result generalize the classical linearity testing result of Blum, Luby and Rubinfeld, that in this language showed that the approximate polymorphisms of $g = \mathsf{XOR}$ are close to XOR's, as well as a recent result of Filmus, Lifshitz, Minzer and Mossel, showing that the approximate polymorphisms of AND can only be close to AND functions., Comment: 43 pages

The hypercontractive inequality on the discrete cube plays a crucial role in many fundamental results in the Analysis of Boolean functions, such as the KKL theorem, Friedgut's junta theorem and the invariance principle. In these results the cube is equipped with the uniform measure, but it is desirable, particularly for applications to the theory of sharp thresholds, to also obtain such results for general $p$-biased measures. However, simple examples show that when $p = o(1)$, there is no hypercontractive inequality that is strong enough. In this paper, we establish an effective hypercontractive inequality for general $p$ that applies to `global functions', i.e. functions that are not significantly affected by a restriction of a small set of coordinates. This class of functions appears naturally, e.g. in Bourgain's sharp threshold theorem, which states that such functions exhibit a sharp threshold. We demonstrate the power of our tool by strengthening Bourgain's theorem, thereby making progress on a conjecture of Kahn and Kalai and by establishing a $p$-biased analog of the invariance principle. Our results have significant applications in Extremal Combinatorics. Here we obtain new results on the Tur\'an number of any bounded degree uniform hypergraph obtained as the expansion of a hypergraph of bounded uniformity. These are asymptotically sharp over an essentially optimal regime for both the uniformity and the number of edges and solve a number of open problems in the area. In particular, we give general conditions under which the crosscut parameter asymptotically determines the Tur\'an number, answering a question of Mubayi and Verstra\"ete. We also apply the Junta Method to refine our asymptotic results and obtain several exact results, including proofs of the Huang--Loh--Sudakov conjecture on cross matchings and the F\"uredi--Jiang--Seiver conjecture on path expansions., Comment: Subsumes arXiv:1906.05568

Determining the maximum size of a $t$-intersecting code in $[m]^n$ was a longstanding open problem of Frankl and F\"uredi, solved independently by Ahlswede and Khachatrian and by Frankl and Tokushige. We extend their result to the setting of forbidden intersections, by showing that for any $m>2$ and $n$ large compared with $t$ (but not necessarily $m$) that the same bound holds for codes with the weaker property of being $(t-1)$-avoiding, i.e.\ having no two vectors that agree on exactly $t-1$ coordinates. Our proof proceeds via a junta approximation result of independent interest, which we prove via a development of our recent theory of global hypercontractivity: we show that any $(t-1)$-avoiding code is approximately contained in a $t$-intersecting junta (a code where membership is determined by a constant number of co-ordinates). In particular, when $t=1$ this gives an alternative proof of a recent result of Eberhard, Kahn, Narayanan and Spirkl that symmetric intersecting codes in $[m]^n$ have size $o(m^n)$.

We obtain new separation results for the two-party external information complexity of boolean functions. The external information complexity of a function $f(x,y)$ is the minimum amount of information a two-party protocol computing $f$ must reveal to an outside observer about the input. We obtain the following results: 1. We prove an exponential separation between external and internal information complexity, which is the best possible; previously no separation was known. 2. We prove a near-quadratic separation between amortized zero-error communication complexity and external information complexity for total functions, disproving a conjecture of \cite{Bravermansurvey}. 3. We prove a matching upper showing that our separation result is tight.

Working in the multi-type Galton-Watson branching-process framework we analyse the spread of a pandemic via a general multi-type random contact graph. Our model consists of several communities, and takes, as input, parameters that outline the contacts between individuals in distinct communities. Given these parameters, we determine whether there will be an outbreak and if yes, we calculate the size of the giant connected component of the graph, thereby, determining the fraction of the population of each type that would be infected before it ends. We show that the pandemic spread has a natural evolution direction given by the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector of a matrix whose entries encode the average number of individuals of one type expected to be infected by an individual of another type. The corresponding eigenvalue is the basic reproduction number of the pandemic. We perform numerical simulations that compare homogeneous and heterogeneous spread graphs and quantify the difference between them. We elaborate on the difference between herd immunity and the end of the pandemic and the effect of countermeasures on the fraction of infected population., Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures
