La evaluación de las intenciones y competencias emprendedoras de los estudiantes de modalidad a distancia no se ha tenido demasiado en cuenta, por lo que se aplicó el cuestionario GUESSS a 2458 discentes de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. Los objetivos fueron: a) describir las intenciones y competencias emprendedoras, las experiencias en emprendimiento y la valoración de la universidad como ecosistema emprendedor; b) detectar agrupamientos respecto al perfil emprendedor; c) identificar variables influyentes de la intención emprendedora. Se llevó a cabo una investigación cuantitativa, no experimental, transversal y de encuesta. Se implementaron análisis multivariante de conglomerados y de regresión lineal múltiple, las pruebas U de Mann-Whitney, H de Kruskal-Wallis y el coeficiente de Spearman. La intención emprendedora fue relativamente baja y las competencias emprendedoras estaban considerablemente desarrolladas. Valoraron favorablemente a la universidad como ecosistema emprendedor, requiriendo mejoras en cuanto al fomento de los emprendimientos. Se identificaron dos conglomerados de estudiantes: alto/bajo potencial emprendedor. La variable que mejor predijo la intención emprendedora fue la actitud; el peso de las competencias emprendedoras no resultó despreciable. El control conductual percibido y las normas subjetivas no mostraron una relación fuerte con la misma. El modelo predictivo mostró gran capacidad explicativa. Puesto que la educación emprendedora permite mejorar las competencias e intenciones emprendedoras, conocer los antecedentes psicosociales que llevan a los sujetos a emprender puede contribuir al diseño de programas formativos para el emprendimiento más realistas y viables, adaptados a los distintos perfiles de alumnos.

Objective To evaluate cognitive function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and inflammatory activity.Patients and methods We performed a cross-sectional study of a cohort of patients with RA initiating their first biological treatment due to moderate-to-high inflammation and a healthy control group (no inflammatory diseases) matched for age, sex and educational level. Recent studies point to intestinal permeability as an important factor in the establishment and development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Tight junctions (TJs) play a major role in intestinal homeostasis. The alteration of this homeostasis is related to RA. Furthermore, RA patients present dysbiosis and a lower microbiota diversity compared to healthy individuals. A cross-sectional study including RA patients and sex- and age-matched healthy controls was performed. The quantification of TJ proteins was carried out by ELISA. Gut microbiota was evaluated by NGS platform Ion Torrent S. The inflammatory variables included were DAS28, CRP, inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1, TNF-α) and oxidised LDL. Claudin-1 levels showed significant differences between groups. Results evidenced a correlation between claudin-1 values and age (r: −0.293; p < 0.05), IL6 (r: −0.290; p < 0.05) and CRP (r: −0.327; p < 0.05), and between zonulin values and both age (r: 0.267; p < 0.05) and TNFα (r: 0.266; p < 0.05). Moreover, claudin-1 and CRP levels are related in RA patients (β: −0.619; p: 0.045), and in patients with high inflammatory activity, the abundance of the genus Veillonella is positively associated with claudin-1 levels (β: 39.000; p: 0.004).

Background/Objectives: Glucocorticoids are drugs that are increasingly used in oral surgery to reduce trismus, inflammation, and postoperative pain, three frequent complications after the surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of 8 mg dexamethasone versus 40 mg methylprednisolone in the prevention of postoperative complications after third molar surgery. Methods: A randomized double-blind clinical trial was conducted following CONSORT guidelines. In detail, 84 patients were included in the study, who randomly received a single preoperative submucosal dose of dexamethasone (8 mg) or methylprednisolone (40 mg). The variables analyzed, as primary outcomes, were trismus, inflammation, and postoperative pain. The measurements were performed at baseline (0 h), 3 h, 7 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 7 th day using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Verbal Rating Scale (VRS), and the Gabka–Matsumara method. Results: Dexamethasone reduced trismus, inflammation, and postoperative pain significantly better than methylprednisolone. Conclusions: Preoperative submucosal administration of 8 mg dexamethasone is effective and safe in reducing the severity of postoperative complications following surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars.

Patients with long COVID syndrome present with various symptoms affecting multiple organs. Vaccination before or after SARS-CoV-2 infection appears to reduce the incidence of long COVID or at least limit symptom deterioration. However, the impact of vaccination on the severity and extent of multi-organ long COVID symptoms and the relationship between the circulating anti-spike protein antibody levels and the severity and extent of multi-organ symptoms are unclear. This prospective cohort study included 198 patients with previous PCR-verified SARS-CoV-2 infection who met the criteria for long COVID syndrome. Patients were divided into vaccinated (n = 138, 69.7%) or unvaccinated (n = 60, 30.3%) groups. Anti-spike protein antibody levels were determined at initial clinical presentation and compared between the groups. Long COVID symptoms were quantified on the basis of the number of affected organs: Class I (mild) with symptoms in three organs, Class II (moderate) with symptoms in four to five organs, and Class III (severe) with symptoms in six or more organ systems. Associations between time to infection and vaccination with anti-spike protein antibody levels were assessed. The anti-spike protein antibody levels were 1925 ± 938 vs. 481 ± 768 BAU/mL (p < 0.001) in the vaccinated vs. unvaccinated patients. The circulating anti-spike antibody cutoff of 665.5 BAU/mL allowed us to differentiate the vaccinated from the unvaccinated patients. Vaccinated patients had fewer class II and class III multi-organ symptoms (Class II 39.9% vs. 45.0%; Class III 10.1% vs. 23.3%, p-value 0.014). Anti-spike antibody level correlated negatively with multi-organ symptom classes (p = 0.016; 95% CI −1.229 to −0.126). Anti-spike antibody levels in unvaccinated patients declined markedly with time, in contrast to the persistence of high anti-spike antibody levels in the vaccinated patients. Multi-organ symptoms were lower in vaccinated long-COVID patients, especially in those with higher anti-spike antibody levels (≥665.5 BAU/mL). Classifying the symptoms on the basis of the number of affected organs enables a more objective symptom quantification.

Agricultural systems are currently facing significant issues, primarily due to population growth rates in the context of global climate change. Rising temperatures cause plant heat stress and impact crop yield, which in turn compromises global food production and safety. Climate change is also having a significant impact on water availability around the world, and droughts are becoming more frequent and severe in many regions. The combined effect of both heat and drought stresses increases plant damage, resulting in reduced plant development and productivity loss. Therefore, developing heat–drought-tolerant crop varieties is crucial for enhancing yield under these challenging conditions. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), a major vegetable crop highly appreciated for its nutritional qualities, is particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures, which have a significant negative impact on tomato fruit setting and cause male gametophyte abortion. In this work, a classical genetic approach was employed to identify tomato genotypes showing a resilient response to combined heat and drought stress conditions. A phenotype screening of a natural germplasm collection and an ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenized population resulted in the identification of a significant number of tomato lines tolerant to combined heat and drought conditions, specifically 161 EMS lines and 24 natural accessions as tolerant. In addition, TILLING and Eco-TILLING analyses were used as proof-of-concept to isolate new genetic variants of genes previously reported as key regulators of abiotic stress responses in different species. The identification of these variants holds the potential to provide suitable plant material for breeding programs focused on enhancing tomato resilience to adverse climate conditions.

Introduction: Glycaemic variability (GV) refers to variations in blood glucose levels, and may affect stroke outcomes. This study aims to assess the effect of GV on acute ischaemic stroke progression. Methods: We performed an exploratory analysis of the multicentre, prospective, observational GLIAS-II study. Capillary glucose levels were measured every 4 hours during the first 48 hours after stroke, and GV was defined as the standard deviation of the mean glucose values. The primary outcomes were mortality and death or dependency at 3 months. Secondary outcomes were in-hospital complications, stroke recurrence, and the impact of the route of insulin administration on GV. Results: A total of 213 patients were included. Higher GV values were observed in patients who died (n = 16; 7.8%; 30.9 mg/dL vs 23.3 mg/dL; p = 0.05). In a logistic regression analysis adjusted for age and comorbidity, both GV (OR = 1.03; 95% CI, 1.003-1.06; p = 0.03) and stroke severity (OR = 1.12; 95% CI, 1.04-1.2; p = 0.004) were independently associated with mortality at 3 months. Resumen: Introducción: La variabilidad glucémica (VG) hace referencia a las oscilaciones en los niveles de glucosa en sangre y podría influir en el pronóstico del ictus. Objetivo: Analizar el efecto de la VG en la evolución del infarto cerebral agudo (IC). Métodos: Análisis exploratorio del estudio GLIAS-II (multicéntrico, prospectivo y observacional). Se midieron los niveles de glucemia capilar cada cuatro horas durante las primeras 48 horas y la VG se definió como la desviación estándar de los valores medios. Variables principales: mortalidad y muerte o dependencia a los tres meses. Variables secundarias: porcentaje de complicaciones intrahospitalarias y de recurrencia de ictus, e influencia de la vía de administración de insulina sobre la VG. Resultados: Se incluyeron 213 pacientes. Los pacientes que fallecieron (N = 16;7,8%) presentaron mayores valores de VG (30,9 mg/dL vs. 23,3 mg/dL; p = 0,05). En el análisis de regresión logística ajustado por edad y comorbilidad, tanto la VG (OR = 1,03; IC del 95%: 1,003-1,06: p = 0,03) como la gravedad del IC (OR = 1,12; IC del 95%: 1,04-1,2; p = 0,004) se asociaron de forma independiente con la mortalidad a los tres meses. No se encontró asociación entre la VG y las demás variables de estudio. La mancha urbana de la ciudad de Mérida (Yucatán, México) ha crecido en las últimas décadas de manera muy destacada, como ocurre en otras urbes de América Latina. Se percibe la expansión de forma nítida en la zona norte, en detrimento de su zona sur, una circunstancia que ratifica la segregación social en función del nivel socioeconómico de sus pobladores. Tal diferenciación se analiza en este artículo a través del estudio de los gimnasios privados distribuidos por la ciudad, establecimientos que, mediante sus instalaciones y la oferta y demanda de actividades físico-deportivas, confirman esa disparidad urbana, la cual también se refleja en la concepción del cuerpo que ofrecen los gimnasios y que se relaciona con la imagen corporal normalizada por su clientela.

La escasa atención prestada en la historiografía chiapaneca a la pandemia conocida como “influenza española”, no impide reconocer su afectación en vidas humanas en el estado del sureste mexicano, en concreto a finales del año 1918 y principios de 1919. Ante el desconocimiento del virus causante de los rápidos fallecimientos, en la época se recurrió a los remedios conocidos de anteriores epidemias de influenza, así como a los saberes de los escasos médicos que vivían en Chiapas. En tal sentido, en el presente artículo se ofrece la extensa respuesta que el doctor Gustavo Gómez Azcárate hizo a la solicitud del gobierno estatal para establecer medidas preventivas y antídotos destinados a enfrentar la enfermedad. Una respuesta que se contextualiza históricamente para entender las dificultades a la hora de atender una emergencia sanitaria, como la que ocasionó la pandemia de influenza, debido a las carencias materiales y científicas del momento.

ABSTRACTVitamin D, microbiota, and the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) have been the focus of recent research due to their potential role in maintaining overall health. We hypothesize that MedDiet may alter the gut microbiota profile through changes in vitamin D levels. We aimed to investigate changes in gut microbiota and serum vitamin D levels after a MedDiet within a lifestyle intervention. The study included 91 patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome, who were categorized based on their serum vitamin D levels as having either optimal or low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D levels]. The profile of the gut microbiota was analyzed by the 16S rRNA sequencing, inferring its functionality through PICRUsT. Participants underwent a hypocaloric MedDiet and change in their lifestyle for 1 year, and the profile and functionality of their gut microbiota were evaluated by analyzing inter-individual differences in time. At baseline, gut microbiota profiles qualitatively differed between participants with Optimal or Low 25(OH)D levels [Unweighted (p = 0.016)]. Concentrating solar power (CSP) technology with thermal energy storage (TES) could contribute to achieving a net zero emissions scenario by 2050. Calcium looping (CaL) is one of the potential TES processes for the future generation of CSP plants coupled with highly efficient power cycles. Research on CaL as a system for thermochemical energy storage (TCES) has focused on efficiency enhancement based on hybridization with other renewable technologies. This work proposes a novel solid management system to improve the efficiency of a CaL TCES system. The inclusion of a solid–solid separation unit after the carbonation step could lead to energy and size savings. The role of segregation between carbonated and calcined material on plant requirements is assessed, given the experimental evidence on the potential classification between more and less carbonated particles. The results show lower energy (up to 12%) and size (up to 76%) demands when the circulation of less carbonated material through the CaL TCES system diminishes. Moreover, under a classification effectiveness of 100%, the retrieval energy could increase by 32%, and the stored energy is enhanced by five times. The present work can be a proper tool to set the design and size of a CaL TCES system with a partial separation of the carbonated material.

Primary pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH) is a clinical diagnosis that requires the exclusion of other underlying causes of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Increased pulmonary artery (PA) pressure and subsequent right ventricular (RV) pressure overload often result in a flattening of the curved interventricular septum, leading to a D-shaped left ventricle (LV), as observed in echocardiographic short-axis views. A similar finding may be also observed on myocardial perfusion SPECT images, the so-called Movahed's sign. We present a clinical case of a female patient with PAH and progression of exertional dyspnea that underwent myocardial perfusion SPECT to investigate LV myocardial ischemia. The SPECT images revealed enhanced tracer uptake in the dilated right ventricle. Additionally, we observed a D-shaped LV or Movahed's sign, which may serve as a potential marker of RV pressure overload, along with a small stress-induced perfusion defect on the LV septal wall. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the presence of a D-shaped LV and signs of RV pressure overload, as they can alter the interpretation of LV perfusion deficits on SPECT images. This case report aims to emphasize the complex nature of right heart abnormalities in pathologies such as PAH and the consideration of the RV implications in myocardial SPECT images—which typically focus solely on the LV.

The article is dedicated to Pietro Fancelli’s work. It has been taking shape through a progressive reevaluation of the artist’s career since the beginning of the twentieth century with the studies on the seventeenth century in Bologna by Renato Roli until the latest papers by Angelo Mazza. Besides, the essential reference to the manuscript written by Fancelli, has allowed to link the preparatory drawing representing Alessandro e Timoteo to the much praised curtain which has been lost.

Mérida presenta un modelo de ciudad horizontal y dispersa, que ha experimentado un gran crecimiento de su mancha urbana en las últimas décadas, sobre todo en su zona norte. Tiene una población muy segmentada por el nivel socioeconómico, que es menor en el sur y mayor en el norte. Se analizan las características de las diferentes zonas de la ciudad desde el punto de vista urbanístico, del tipo de centro de fitness presente en las mismas, y del concepto e imagen de cuerpo relacionado con la oferta concreta de las prácticas físico-deportivas, en una investigación desde la perspectiva de la antropología social, con un diseño plurimetodológico basado en la etnografía y el trabajo de campo. Los resultados obtenidos permiten configurar un modelo de relaciones entre la diversidad de la oferta de fitness comercial, los cambios en la morfología urbana y la estructura social de la población de la ciudad de Mérida.

Global waste generation is expected to continue to grow due to economic development and population growth. Therefore, sustainable waste management is mandatory if a sustainable world is desired in which the objectives of the circular economy concept are met, where recovery is the last step to be taken when reduce, reuse or recycle have already been carried out. Waste-to-energy processes could constitute a way to recover energy from waste, helping the access to renewable energy to the world population, in addition to a waste management system. The present review describes different wastes that can be employed in waste-to-energy processes, using thermo-chemical, biochemical and chemical processes. The energy produced can be in the form of heat, electricity or biofuels. For each of these processes, the feedstock used, the state-of-the-art in recent years and the expected trends for the coming years are briefly discussed.
