The damping of built-up structures stems largely from the microscopic dry frictional interactions in the contact interfaces. The accurate prediction of friction damping has been an important scientific aim of the past several decades. Recent research indicates that very good agreement with vibration measurements is to be expected if the actual contact surface topography is sufficiently well known and finely resolved, and frictional-unilateral interactions are modeled in terms of the Coulomb-Signorini conditions. Resolving all relevant length scales in one finite element model leads to enormous or even prohibitive computation effort and regularization of the set-valued contact laws might be needed to ensure numerical stability. In this work, we propose a multi-scale approach: The stress and deformation field in the contact region is modeled using elastic half-space theory, implemented on a regular and fine grid of boundary elements (BE), so that the compliance matrix can be expressed in closed form. The vibration behavior of the remaining region is described using a relatively coarse finite element (FE) model, which is further reduced via component mode synthesis. The two models are coupled by enforcing compatibility and equilibrium conditions in the far field. The set-valued Coulomb-Signorini conditions are enforced robustly and efficiently using a projected over-relaxation scheme in conjunction with an appropriate active-set strategy. For the S4 beam benchmark, very good agreement with regard to the amplitude-dependent frequency and damping ratio of the first few modes is achieved, while the computation effort is reduced by several orders of magnitude compared to the full-FE reference. The proposed multi-scale method permits a very fine resolution of the contact surface topography without suffering from numerical instability.

The symmetry requirements for realizing unconventional compensated magnets with spin-polarized bands such as altermagnets have recently been uncovered. The most recent addition to this family of magnets is parity-odd or $p$-wave magnets. We demonstrate that $p$-wave magnets are perfectly compatible with superconductivity due to the spin polarization of their electron bands and that they induce unexpected spin transport phenomena. We first show that $p$-wave magnetism can coexist with conventional superconductivity regardless of the magnitude of the spin splitting. We then predict that $p$-wave magnets induce a charge-to-spin conversion, which can be strongly enhanced by the presence of superconductivity providing a way to probe the coexistence in experiments. It has recently been realized that magnetic systems with coplanar magnetic order that are invariant under the combined operation of time-reversal and translation with half a unit cell feature energy bands with a symmetry-protected $p$-wave spin polarization. Such $p$-wave magnets are a sought-after spin analogy of unconventional triplet superconducting pairing and show promise for use in spintronics. Metallic helimagnets provide a realization of $p$-wave magnetism, but such order often occurs in systems lacking inversion symmetry so that Rashba spin-orbit interactions can be prominent. An important question is therefore how the magnitude and the existence of $p$-wave spin polarization is affected by Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Here, we prove that while the $p$-wave symmetry of the spin-polarized bands is strictly speaking removed by spin-orbit interactions in helimagnets unless the period of the helix is fine-tuned, the actual quantitative deviation from $p$-wave symmetry is extremely weak unless the period of the helix is only a few lattice sites. Thereafter, we show that the $p$-wave magnetism becomes completely robust in pairs of antiferromagnetically coupled helices. More precisely, the $p$-wave spin-polarization of the bands then appears regardless of the periodicity and regardless of the strength of the spin-orbit interactions. This shows that antiferromagnetically coupled helimagnetic chains produce robust $p$-wave spin polarization free of fine-tuning requirements, making them attractive for potential spintronic applications.

Letting free polymers diffuse from solution into a crosslinked polymer gel is often a crucial processing step in the synthesis of multiphase polymer-based gels, e.g., core-shell microgels. Here we use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to obtain molecular insights into this process. We consider idealized situations where the gel is modeled as a regular polymer network with the topology of a diamond lattice, and all free polymers and strands have the same length and consist of the same type of monomer. After bringing the gel and the polymer solution into contact, two time regimes are observed: An initial compression of the gel caused by the osmotic pressure of the solution, followed by an expansion due to swelling. We characterize the time evolution of density profiles, the penetration of free polymers into the gel and the connection between the gel and solution phase. The interfacial structure locally equilibrates after roughly 100 chain relaxation times. At late times, the free chains inside the gel undergo a percolation transition if the polymer concentration in the gel exceeds a critical value, which is of the same order as the overlap concentration. The fluctuations of the interface can be described by a capillary wave model that accounts for the elasticity of the gel. Based on this, we extract the interfacial tension of the gel-solution interface. Interestingly, both the interfacial tension and the local interfacial width increase with increasing free polymer concentration - in contrast to liquid-liquid interfaces, where these two quantities are typically anticorrelated.

We study property testing with incomplete or noisy inputs. The models we consider allow for adversarial manipulation of the input, but differ in whether the manipulation can be done only offline, i.e., before the execution of the algorithm, or online, i.e., as the algorithm runs. The manipulations by an adversary can come in the form of erasures or corruptions. We compare the query complexity and the randomness complexity of property testing in the offline and online models. Kalemaj, Raskhodnikova, and Varma (Theory Comput `23) provide properties that can be tested with a small number of queries with offline erasures, but cannot be tested at all with online erasures. We demonstrate that the two models are incomparable in terms of query complexity: we construct properties that can be tested with a constant number of queries in the online corruption model, but require querying a significant fraction of the input in the offline erasure model. We also construct properties that exhibit a strong separation between the randomness complexity of testing in the presence of offline and online adversaries: testing these properties in the online model requires exponentially more random bits than in the offline model, even when they are tested with nearly the same number of queries in both models. We theoretically investigate the supercurrent flow in a Josephson junction consisting of two spin-split superconductors combined by a normal metal weak link. The normal metal may be driven out of equilibrium, thus modifying the electron and hole occupation and consequently the supercurrent through the system. Considering first an equilibrium normal metal, we find that increasing the spin-splitting field can enhance the supercurrent strongly for long junctions at low temperatures. In contrast to previous work, this is a much larger enhancement (over 100%) and it is achieved for both parallel and antiparallel spin-splitting field configurations, making the effect robust. On the other hand, when a gate voltage is applied to drive the system out of equilibrium, we demonstrate a more efficient $\pi$-transition of the supercurrent in terms of a lower transition voltage by tuning the spin-splitting. Moreover, we find the application of temperature bias strongly suppresses the supercurrent, resulting in very sharp supercurrent jumps as outputs., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Dark energy away from a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ -- like early universe inflation that ends -- can be understood in terms of well defined physical behaviors. These guide dark energy into thawing or freezing classes, with $w_0$--$w_a$ arising as a physical calibration of the phase space. Other regions of phase space -- zones of avoidance -- require violation of some basic principle. We explore these cases, drawing a direct analogy with how nonGaussianity in inflation can add physics beyond standard dynamics. We examine the physics implications if the best fit of current data is taken to be truth, outlining four properties, and investigate the reality of phantom crossing $w=-1$, finding it significantly favored., Comment: 6 pages

The superconducting version of a diode effect has been the subject of extensive research in the last few years. So far, the focus has almost exclusively been on charge transport, but a natural question is if it is possible to obtain a dissipationless diode effect for spin transport. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to generate an electrically tunable spin-diode effect with ideal efficiency by using superconductor/ferromagnet multilayers: the system completely forbids spin transport in one direction whereas it transport spins with zero energy loss in the other direction. Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is a process that creates entanglement between spatially separated electrons and holes. Such entangled pairs have potential applications in quantum information processing, and it is therefore relevant to determine how the probability for CAR can be increased. CAR competes with another non-local process called elastic cotunneling (EC), which does not create entanglement. In conventional normal metal/superconductor/normal metal heterostructures, earlier theoretical work predicted that EC dominates over CAR. Nevertheless, we show numerically that when the Keldysh-Usadel equations are solved self-consistently in the superconductor, CAR can dominate over EC. Self-consistency is necessary both for the conversion from a quasiparticle current to a supercurrent and to describe the spatial variation of the order parameter correctly. A requirement for the CAR probability to surpass the EC probability is that the inverse proximity effect is small. Otherwise, the subvoltage density of states becomes large and EC is strengthened by quasiparticles flowing through the superconductor. Therefore, CAR becomes dominant in the non-local transport with increasing interface resistance and length of the superconducting region. Our results show that even the simplest possible experimental setup with easily accessible normal metals and superconductors can provide dominant CAR by designing the experimental parameters correctly. We also find that spin-splitting in the superconductor increases the subvoltage density of states, and thus always favors EC over CAR. Finally, we tune the chemical potential in the leads such that transport is governed by electrons of one spin type. This can increase the CAR probability at finite values of the spin-splitting compared to using a spin-degenerate voltage bias, and provides a way to control the spin of the conduction electrons electrically., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

The Majorana fermion offers fascinating possibilities such as non-Abelian statistics and non-local robust qubits, and hunting it is one of the most important topics in current condensed matter physics. Most of the efforts have been focused on the Majorana bound state at zero energy in terms of scanning tunneling spectroscopy searching for the quantized conductance. On the other hand, a chiral Majorana edge channel appears at the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator when engineering an interface between proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetism. Recent advances in microwave spectroscopy of topological edge states open a new avenue for observing signatures of such Majorana edge states through the local optical conductivity. As a guide to future experiments, we show how the local optical conductivity and density of states present distinct qualitative features depending on the symmetry of the superconductivity, that can be tuned via the magnetization and temperature. NEO Surveyor will detect asteroids and comets using mid-infrared thermal emission, however ground-based followup resources will require knowledge of the expected visible light brightness in order to plan characterization observations. Here we describe the range of visual-to-infrared colors that the NEOs detected by Surveyor will span, and demonstrate that for objects that have no previously reported Visual band observations, estimates of the Johnson Visual-band brightness based on infrared flux alone will have significant uncertainty. Incidental or targeted photometric followup of objects discovered by Surveyor enables predictions of the fraction of reflected light visible and near-infrared wavelengths, supporting additional detailed characterization., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Despite a plethora of research dedicated to designing HITs for non-workstations, there is a lack of research looking specifically into workers' perceptions of the suitability of these devices for managing and completing work. In this work, we fill this research gap by conducting an online survey of 148 workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk to explore 1. how crowdworkers currently use their non-workstation devices to complete and manage crowdwork, 2. what challenges they face using those devices, and 3. to what extent they wish they could use those devices if their concerns were addressed. Our results show that workers unanimously favor using a desktop to complete and manage crowdwork. While workers occasionally use smartphones or tablets, they find their suitability marginal at best and have little interest in smart speakers and smartwatches, viewing them as unsuitable for crowdwork. When investigating the reason for these views, we find that the key issue is that non workstation devices lack the tooling necessary to automatically find and accept HITs, tooling that workers view as essential in their efforts to compete with bots in accepting high paying work. To address this problem, we propose a new paradigm for finding, accepting, and completing crowdwork that puts crowdworkers on equal footing with bots in these tasks. We also describe future research directions for tailoring HITs to non workstation devices and definitely answering whether smart speakers and smartwatches have a place in crowdwork.

Crowdsourcing platforms have traditionally been designed with a focus on workstation interfaces, restricting the flexibility that crowdworkers need. Recognizing this limitation and the need for more adaptable platforms, prior research has highlighted the diverse work processes of crowdworkers, influenced by factors such as device type and work stage. However, these variables have largely been studied in isolation. Our study is the first to explore the interconnected variabilities among these factors within the crowdwork community. Through a survey involving 150 Amazon Mechanical Turk crowdworkers, we uncovered three distinct groups characterized by their interrelated variabilities in key work aspects. The largest group exhibits a reliance on traditional devices, showing limited interest in integrating smartphones and tablets into their work routines. The second-largest group also primarily uses traditional devices but expresses a desire for supportive tools and scripts that enhance productivity across all devices, particularly smartphones and tablets. The smallest group actively uses and strongly prefers non-workstation devices, especially smartphones and tablets, for their crowdworking activities. We translate our findings into design insights for platform developers, discussing the implications for creating more personalized, flexible, and efficient crowdsourcing environments. Additionally, we highlight the unique work practices of these crowdworker clusters, offering a contrast to those of more traditional and established worker groups.

We investigate the Friedel oscillations of the local density of states (LDOS) induced by a single impurity with both a spin-independent potential and an exchange coupling to the electrons in altermagnets and unconventional $p$-wave magnets. We identify features that make the Friedel oscillations and magnetization distinct from other materials with nontrivial spin texture such as Rashba metals. Because time-reversal symmetry is broken in altermagnets, both magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities lead to local magnetization with the spatial pattern that reflects the symmetry of the altermagnetic splitting. The period of the corresponding oscillations provides an alternative way to quantify the altermagnetic spin splitting and the shape of the altermagnetic bands. The LDOS pattern in $p$-wave magnets, which respect combined time-reversal and translation symmetries, is rich. It reveals anisotropy related directly to the spin splitting, but surprisingly also features LDOS oscillations with a doubled period in the proximity of the impurity. The latter effect is also observed in a Rashba metal with an exchange field and originates from the interplay of propagating and evanescent waves. Interacting impurity spins adsorbed on surfaces have been suggested as basic components for applications in quantum computation and spintronics. Such spins usually prefer a parallel or antiparallel configuration, but weakly non-collinear alignments are possible due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that arises in the presence of relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Here, we show that an effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-type interaction (DMTI) can emerge purely from superconducting correlations without any spin-orbit interaction. We give an analytical proof and provide a numerical study which shows that DMTI arises in mixed-parity superconductors solely from the superconducting pairing. Moreover, we show that the same effect can be realized in Josephson junctions between s-wave and p-wave superconductors, where a phase bias toggles the DMTI entirely on and off. Utilizing the electron orbital degree of freedom in heterostructures is attracting increasing attention due to the possibility of achieving much larger conversion rates between charge and orbital angular momentum flow compared to the intrinsic electron spin. Here, we consider orbital angular momentum currents in a tight-binding multiorbital lattice model and derive their continuity equation. From it, we observe that the current is not conserved and apply similar considerations to the recently discovered altermagnets. We find nonzero orbital torque terms, elucidate their physical mechanism, and show numerically that they contribute to dampening the orbital angular momentum current flowing in multiorbital heterostructures. Moreover, we compute the orbital RKKY interaction and find it exhibits similar characteristics as the orbital angular momentum current mediating it, thus serving as a direct experimental probe of such currents., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Altermagnets is a class of antiferromagnetic materials which has electron bands with lifted spin degeneracy in momentum space but vanishing net magnetization and no stray magnetic fields. Because of these properties, altermagnets have attracted much attention for potential use in spintronics. We here show that despite the absence of bulk magnetization, the itinerant electrons in altermagnets can generate a magnetization close to edges and vacuum interfaces. We find that surface-induced magnetization can also occur for conventional antiferromagnets with spin-degenerate bands, where the magnetization from the itinerant electrons originates from a subtle yet nonvanishing redistribution of the probability density on the unit-cell level. An intuitive explanation of this effect in a phenomenological model is provided. In the altermagnetic case, the induced magnetization has a different spatial dependence than in the antiferromagnetic case due to the anisotropy of the spin-polarized Fermi surfaces, causing the edge-induced Friedel oscillations of the spin-up and -down electron densities to have different periods. We employ both a low-energy effective continuum model and lattice tight-binding calculations. New unconventional compensated magnets with a $p$-wave spin polarization protected by a composite time-reversal translation symmetry have been proposed in the wake of altermagnets. To facilitate the experimental discovery and applications of these unconventional magnets, we construct an effective analytical model. The effective model is based on a minimal tight-binding model for unconventional $p$-wave magnets that clarifies the relation to other magnets with $p$-wave spin-polarized bands. One of the most prominent advantages of our analytical model is the possibility to employ various analytical approaches while capturing essential features of $p$-wave magnets. We illustrate the effective model by evaluating the tunneling conductance in junctions with $p$-wave magnets, revealing a large magnetoresistance, spin filtering, and anisotropic bulk spin conductivity beyond linear response despite the absence of a net magnetization. Baryon acoustic oscillation data from the first year of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) provide near percent-level precision of cosmic distances in seven bins over the redshift range $z=0.1$-$4.2$. We use this data, together with other distance probes, to constrain the cosmic expansion history using some well-motivated physical classes of dark energy. In particular, we explore three physics-focused behaviors of dark energy from the equation of state and energy density perspectives: the thawing class (matching many simple quintessence potentials), emergent class (where dark energy comes into being recently, as in phase transition models), and mirage class (where phenomenologically the distance to CMB last scattering is close to that from a cosmological constant $\Lambda$ despite dark energy dynamics). All three classes fit the data at least as well as $\Lambda$CDM, and indeed can improve on it by $\Delta\chi^2\approx -5$ to $-17$ for the combination of DESI BAO with CMB and supernova data, while having one more parameter. The mirage class does essentially as well as $w_0w_a$CDM while having one less parameter. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. The interaction between two impurity spins provides vital information about the host system and has been suggested to form a building block in quantum computation and spintronic devices. We here determine this Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in recently discovered altermagnetic materials, including the presence of a Zeeman field, in a two- and three-dimensional altermagnet. In two dimensions, we also study the effect of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Our results reveal that the momentum-resolved spin-polarization of the itinerant carriers in the altermagnet changes the RKKY interaction qualitatively from the isotropic spin-splitting in a ferromagnet. The Ising-contribution directed parallel with the altermagnetism is found to exhibit a beating pattern reflecting the shape of the Fermi surface of the system and may thus be further influenced by an out-of-plane Zeeman field. However, the exchange interaction for in-plane impurity spins deviates only slightly from that of a normal metal. On shorter length scales, we find that the Ising, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya terms, and other non-collinear interaction terms in the RKKY interaction acquire a rapidly oscillating behavior as a function of the relative angle between the impurity spins, which is not present in the ferromagnetic case. We determine how this new length scale depends on the system parameters analytically. We implement Crossing Statistics to reconstruct in a model-agnostic manner the expansion history of the universe and properties of dark energy, using DESI Data Release 1 (DR1) BAO data in combination with one of three different supernova compilations (PantheonPlus, Union3, and DES-SN5YR) and Planck CMB observations. Our results hint towards an evolving and emergent dark energy behaviour, with negligible presence of dark energy at $z\gtrsim 1$, at varying significance depending on the data sets combined. In all these reconstructions, the cosmological constant lies outside the $95\%$ confidence intervals for some redshift ranges. This dark energy behaviour, reconstructed using Crossing Statistics, is in agreement with results from the conventional $w_0$--$w_a$ dark energy equation of state parametrization reported in the DESI Key cosmology paper. Our results add an extensive class of model-agnostic reconstructions with acceptable fits to the data, including models where cosmic acceleration slows down at low redshifts. Internal kinematics of galaxies, traced through the stellar rotation curve or two dimensional velocity map, carry important information on galactic structure and dark matter. With upcoming surveys, the velocity map may play a key role in the development of kinematic lensing as an astrophysical probe. We improve techniques for extracting velocity information from integral field spectroscopy at low signal-to-noise ($S/N$), without a template, and demonstrate substantial advantages over the standard Penalized PiXel-Fitting method (pPXF) approach. Strongly gravitationally lensed supernovae (LSNe) are promising probes for providing absolute distance measurements using gravitational-lens time delays. Spatially unresolved LSNe offer an opportunity to enhance the sample size for precision cosmology. We predict that there will be approximately three times as many unresolved as resolved LSNe Ia in the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) by the {\it Rubin} Observatory. In this article, we explore the feasibility of detecting unresolved LSNe Ia from a pool of preclassified SNe Ia light curves using the shape of the blended light curves with deep-learning techniques. We find that $\sim 30\%$ unresolved LSNe Ia can be detected with a simple 1D convolutional neural network (CNN) using well-sampled $rizy$-band light curves (with a false-positive rate of $\sim 3\%$). Even when the light curve is well observed in only a single band among $r$, $i$, and $z$, detection is still possible with false-positive rates ranging from $\sim 4$ to $7\%$ depending on the band. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these unresolved cases can be detected at an early stage using light curves up to $\sim20$ days from the first observation with well-controlled false-positive rates, providing ample opportunity to trigger follow-up observations. Additionally, we demonstrate the feasibility of time-delay estimations using solely LSST-like data of unresolved light curves, particularly for doubles, when excluding systems with low time delays and magnification ratios. However, the abundance of such systems among those unresolved in LSST poses a significant challenge. We consider the multi-frequency inverse source problem in the presence of a non-homogeneous medium using passive measurements. Precisely, we derive stability estimates for determining the source from the knowledge of only the imaginary part of the radiated field on the boundary for multiple frequencies. The proof combines a spectral decomposition with a quantification of the unique continuation of the resolvent as a holomorphic function of the frequency. The obtained results show that the inverse problem is well posed when the frequency band is larger than the spatial frequency of the source.

In a superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid, a magnetically controlled singlet-to-triplet Cooper pair conversion can modulate the superconducting critical temperature. In these triplet superconducting spin valves, such control usually requires inhomogeneous magnetism. However, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling from an interfacial heavy-metal layer, the singlet/triplet conversion rate and thus the critical temperature, can be controlled via the magnetization direction of a single homogeneous ferromagnet. Here, we report significantly enhanced controllable pair conversion to a triplet state in a Nb/Pt/Co/Pt superconducting spin valve in which Pt/Co/Pt is homogeneously magnetized and proximity-coupled to a superconducting layer of Nb. The Co/Pt interface furthest away from Nb is modified by a sub-nanometer-thick layer of Cu or Au. We argue that the enhancement is most likely associated from an improvement of the Co/Pt interface due to the insertion of Cu and Au layers. Additionally, the higher normalized orbital moments in Au measured using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows that increasing spin-orbit coupling enhances the triplet proximity effect - an observation supported by our theoretical calculations. We propose altermagnet-superconductor junctions as a way to achieve a thermoelectric response in metals free of external or stray magnetic fields. We combine qualitative analysis in a simplified model with a more rigorous approach based on the inverse proximity effect in the functional-integral formulation. We show that coupling an altermagnet to a superconductor in a bilayer induces a momentum-dependent spin-splitting in the superconductor. When tunneling occurs between this bilayer and a different altermagnet, a spin-dependent particle-hole symmetry breakdown arises in the transport, which leads to a thermoelectric response. Our results show that the altermagnet-superconductor junctions may achieve comparable thermoelectric performance to ferromagnet-superconductor junctions, featuring a nonmonotonic dependence of the figure of merit on the strength of the altermagnetic splitting. We also point out an often overlooked fact regarding the inverse proximity effect in superconductors, namely that even in a normal metal-superconductor junction there is a minigap in the superconductor, which gives rise to a four-peak structure in the DOS reminiscent of spin-split superconductors. We present cosmological results from the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in galaxy, quasar and Lyman-$\alpha$ forest tracers from the first year of observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), to be released in the DESI Data Release 1. DESI BAO provide robust measurements of the transverse comoving distance and Hubble rate, or their combination, relative to the sound horizon, in seven redshift bins from over 6 million extragalactic objects in the redshift range $0.1-1$ and $w_a<0$. This preference is 2.6$\sigma$ for the DESI+CMB combination, and persists or grows when SN~Ia are added in, giving results discrepant with the $\Lambda$CDM model at the $2.5\sigma$, $3.5\sigma$ or $3.9\sigma$ levels for the addition of Pantheon+, Union3, or DES-SN5YR datasets respectively. For the flat $\Lambda$CDM model with the sum of neutrino mass $\sum m_\nu$ free, combining the DESI and CMB data yields an upper limit $\sum m_\nu < 0.072$ $(0.113)$ eV at 95% confidence for a $\sum m_\nu>0$ $(\sum m_\nu>0.059)$ eV prior. These neutrino-mass constraints are substantially relaxed in models beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We present the measurement of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest of high-redshift quasars with the first-year dataset of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Our analysis uses over $420\,000$ Ly$\alpha$ forest spectra and their correlation with the spatial distribution of more than $700\,000$ quasars. An essential facet of this work is the development of a new analysis methodology on a blinded dataset. We conducted rigorous tests using synthetic data to ensure the reliability of our methodology and findings before unblinding. Additionally, we conducted multiple data splits to assess the consistency of the results and scrutinized various analysis approaches to confirm their robustness. For a given value of the sound horizon ($r_d$), we measure the expansion at $z_{\rm eff}=2.33$ with 2\% precision, $H(z_{\rm eff}) = (239.2 \pm 4.8) (147.09~{\rm Mpc} /r_d)$ km/s/Mpc. Similarly, we present a 2.4\% measurement of the transverse comoving distance to the same redshift, $D_M(z_{\rm eff}) = (5.84 \pm 0.14) (r_d/147.09~{\rm Mpc})$ Gpc. Binary neutron star mergers are expected to produce fast dynamical ejecta, with mildly relativistic velocities extending to $\beta=v/c>0.6$. In a preceding paper, we derived an analytic description of the time-dependent radio to X-ray synchrotron flux produced by collisionless shocks driven by such fast ejecta into the interstellar medium, for spherical ejecta with broken power-law mass (or energy) distributions, $M(>\gamma\beta)\propto(\gamma\beta)^{-s}$ with $s=s_\text{KN}$ at $\gamma\beta<\gamma_0\beta_0$ and $s=s_\text{ft}$ at $\gamma\beta>\gamma_0\beta_0$ (where $\gamma$ is the Lorentz factor). Here, we extend our analysis and provide analytic expressions for the self-absorption frequency, the cooling frequency, and the observed angular size of the emitting region (which appears as a ring in the sky). For parameter values characteristic of merger calculation results -- a "shallow" mass distribution, $15$, "fast tail" mass distribution -- the analytic results reproduce well (to tens of percent accuracy) the results of detailed numeric calculations, a significant improvement over earlier order-of-magnitude estimates (based on extrapolations of results valid for $\gamma\beta\ll1$)., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Conducting altermagnets have recently emerged as intriguing materials supporting strongly spin-polarized currents without magnetic stray fields. We demonstrate that altermagnets enable three key functionalities, merging superconductivity and spintronics. The first prediction is a controllable supercurrent-induced edge magnetization, which acts like a dissipationless spin-splitter effect. The second and third predictions are a Cooper pair spin-splitter and a filtering effect, respectively. These effects allow for spatial separation of triplet pairs with opposite spin-polarizations and spin-selective tunneling of Cooper pairs. We derive a quasiclassical theory with associated boundary conditions that describe these phenomena and explain how they can be experimentally verified. Our results open a new path for spatial control of spin signals via triplet Cooper pairs using hybrid superconductor-altermagnet devices.
