Accurate identification of geographical origin and species of wood is crucial for endorsing laws to combat illegal trade. Here, the multi-element profile of Ipê species of economic interest in Brazil was investigated by neutron activation analysis (NAA). Ba, Br, Ca, Ce, Co, Eu, Fe, K, La, Na, Rb, Sc, Sm, Sr and Zn were determined in the heartwood and sapwood tissues. The Random Forest algorithm identified Sr, Ba, Sm, La, Ce and Br as the most important elements for discriminating species. The analyses revealed significant differences between species and wood tissues, indicating that multi-element profile has great potential as a forensic tool. The establishment of comprehensive reference databases that cover large geographical areas and take into account the natural variability between species is fundamental to achieving this goal.

Therapeutic antibodies for reducing Aβ plaque load in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is currently making rapid progress. The diagnostic imaging of Aβ plaque load in AD has been underway and is now used in clinical studies. Here, we report our preliminary findings on imaging a therapeutic antibody, Lecanemab, in a postmortem AD brain anterior cingulate. [125I]5-iodo-3-pyridinecarboxamido-Lecanemab ([125I]IPC-Lecanemab) was prepared by coupling N-succinimidyl-5-([125I]iodo)-3-pyridinecarboxylate with Lecanemab in modest yields. The distinct binding of [125I]IPC-Lecanemab to Aβ-rich regions in postmortem human AD brains was higher in grey matter (GM) containing Aβ plaques compared to white matter (WM) (GM/WM was 1.6). Anti-Aβ immunostaining was correlated with [125I]IPC-Lecanemab regional binding in the postmortem AD human brains. [125I]IPC-Lecanemab binding was consistent with the binding of Aβ small molecules, [18F]flotaza and [125I]IBETA, in the same subjects. [18F]Flotaza and [125I]IBETA, however, exhibited significantly higher GM/WM ratios (>20) compared to [125I]IPC-Lecanemab. Our results suggest that radiolabeled [125I]IPC-Lecanemab retains the ability to bind to Aβ in human AD and may therefore be useful as a PET imaging radiotracer when labeled as [124I]IPC-Lecanemab. The ability to directly visualize in vivo a promising therapeutic antibody for AD may be useful in treatment planning and dosing and could be complimentary to small-molecule diagnostic imaging to assess outcomes of therapeutic interventions.

The accurate characterization of carbonate rocks is crucial for determining the potential for exploring outcrops in the oil industry. Modern remote sensing instruments have played an important role in estimating mineral characteristics in the most varied scales. However, mathematical expressions suggested for converting radiance values to mineral information are often designed to work in only one particular territory. At the same time, the few general solutions existing tend to achieve overall poor results. In this paper, we propose an adaptive approach to estimate subpixel amounts of carbonate rocks using OLI-Landsat 8 image data. The main formulation is derived from exhaustive analysis of the spectral behavior of several carbonate materials. The formulation is subsequently adapted through the use of a genetic algorithm to work on diverse situations. Experiments have demonstrated the adaptability of the method for different environments, as well as its higher performance when compared with existing carbonate indices.

In an effort to further understand the challenges facing in vivo imaging probe development for the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor ion channel, we have evaluated the effect of glutamate on the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain. Human post-mortem AD brain slices of the frontal cortex and anterior cingulate were incubated with [3H]MK-801 and adjacent sections were tested for Aβ and Tau. The binding of [3H]MK-801 was measured in the absence and presence of glutamate and glycine. Increased [3H]MK-801 binding in AD brains was observed at baseline and in the presence of glutamate, indicating a significant increase (>100%) in glutamate-induced NMDA ion channel activity in AD brains compared to cognitively normal brains. The glycine effect was lower, suggesting a decrease of the co-agonist effect of glutamate and glycine in the AD brain. Our preliminary findings suggest that the targeting of the NMDA ion channel as well as the glutamate site may be appropriate in the diagnosis and treatment of AD. However, the low baseline levels of [3H]MK-801 binding in the frontal cortex and anterior cingulate in the absence of glutamate and glycine indicate significant hurdles for in vivo imaging probe development and validation.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contribute to air pollution through the formation of secondary aerosols and ozone and extend the lifetime of methane in the atmosphere. Tropospheric VOCs originate to 90 % from biogenic sources on a global scale, mainly from forests. Crops are also a potentially large yet poorly characterized source of VOCs (30 % of the VOC emissions in Europe, mostly oxygenated). In this study, we investigated VOC fluxes over a winter wheat field by eddy covariance using a PTR-Qi-TOF-MS with high sensitivity and mass resolution. The study took place near Paris over a 5-week period and included flowering, crop maturity and senescence. We found a total of 123 VOCs with fluxes 3 times above the detection limit. Methanol was the most emitted compound with an average flux of 63 µg m−2 h−1, representing about 52 % of summed VOC emissions on a molar basis (36 % on a mass basis). We also identified ethanol, acetone, acetaldehyde and dimethyl sulfide among the six most emitted compounds. The third most emitted VOC corresponded to the ion m/z 93.033. It was tentatively identified as furan (C6H4O), a compound not previously reported to be strongly emitted by crops. The average summed VOC emissions were about 173 ± 6 µg m2 h−1, while the average VOC depositions were about 109 ± 2 µg m−2 h−1 and hence 63 % of the VOC emissions on a mass basis. The net ecosystem flux of VOCs was an emission of 64 ± 6 µg m−2 h−1 (0.5 ± 0.05 nmol m−2 s−1). The most deposited VOCs were identified as hydroxyacetone, acetic acid and fragments of oxidized VOCs. Overall, our results reveal that wheat fields represent a non-negligible source and sink of VOCs to be considered in regional VOC budgets and underline the usefulness and limitations of eddy covariance measurements with a PTR-Qi-TOF-MS.

Aim: The present systematic review aims to provide an overview about the impact of cover crops on vegetative growth and productive parameters of vineyards. Methods and results: A systematic review was made using Scopus-index journals along 20 years (1999-2018). The selection was independently done by two researchers, selecting a total of 272 published papers related to cover crops in vineyard. Each article was categorized according to its theme and a metadata was created, considering all relevant information from an agronomic point of view. Conclusion: It was observed that the use of cover crops can reduce vine vegetative growth that, in turn, could be used to keep the incidence of fungal diseases at a low level, like grey mould. In general, this practice does not clearly affect vineyard yield, nor grape juice parameters like total soluble solids (TSS) or titratable acidity (TA). Cover crops can decrease to some extent vineyard pests, especially Cicadellidae. Only and punctually in the central summer months the covers can sometimes cause water stress in the vineyard. Significance of the study: This review allows to systematically synthesize the information on cover crops and their effects on vineyard agronomic performance. Thus allowing using the most suitable cover for the objectives sought in the growing conditions that are had.

This study aims to evaluate the interest of using an under-vine cover crop as a sustainable management tool replacing herbicides or tillage to control weeds, evaluating its effects on yield and berry parameters in a semi-arid climate. The performance of Trifolium fragiferum as an under-vine cover crop was evaluated in 2018 and 2019 in a Merlot vineyard in Traibuenas (Navarra, Spain). This trial showed that the soil under the vines was covered by 80 % of the cover crop in August 2018 and 100 % in Aug 2019, with clover (T. fragiferum) comprising around 26 % and 70 % of the cover crop surface, respectively. The presence of the cover crop only reduced the number of shoots in the second year, although both years there was an increment in water stress. Neither yield, cluster weight nor berry weight were affected by the presence of the under-vine cover crop. Similarly, no changes in grape composition were observed. The use of T. fragiferum-like cover crops under the vine allows for better control of weeds, provided a good installation is achieved. In the first two years, this cover crop reduced vegetative growth and increased water deficit slightly. However, no changes in yield and grape composition were observed. In a context of herbicide suppression and search for sustainable management, under-vine clover cover crops constitute a viable alternative in semi-arid regions provided drip irrigation can be applied.

Mass migration from Venezuela has increased malaria resurgence risk across South America. During 2018, migrants from Venezuela constituted 96% of imported malaria cases along the Ecuador–Peru border. Plasmodium vivax predominated (96%). Autochthonous malaria cases emerged in areas previously malaria-free. Heightened malaria control and a response to this humanitarian crisis are imperative.

The need to determine pseudoperipheral vertices arises from several graph-theoretical approaches for ordering sparse matrix equations. Results of two algorithms for finding such vertices, namely, the George-Liu and Kaveh-Bondarabady algorithms, are evaluated in this work along with a variant of the Kaveh-Bondarabady algorithm. Experiments among these three algorithms in conjunction with the Reverse Cuthill-McKee method suggest that the modified algorithm is a suitable alternative for reducing bandwidth of matrices that arise from specific application area, but it is dominated by the well-know George-Liu algorithm mainly when considering the computational times of the algorithms.
