Abstract Background In Latin America, interventions aimed at adolescents’ health suffer from a shortfall of investment and lack of sustainability. Nurses, as an integral part of health services and systems, can lead the implementation and development of public health policies to improve adolescent health. Objective To identify and analyze the role of nurses in the development and implementation of public policies and in the provision of health care to adolescents in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Methods The research was carried out in three phases: a documentary analysis, an online survey, and semi-structured focus groups. A total of 48 documents were analyzed, 288 nurses participated in the survey, and 29 nurses participated in the focus groups. Results State policies aim to guarantee rights, with special protection for children and adolescents. It is an incremental process, with greater involvement of civil society and governments. Participants reported a lack of synergy between law and practice, as well as differences in regulatory compliance in rural areas and in populations of different ethnicities and cultures. Their perception was that the protection of adolescents is not specifically enshrined in the legal bases and regulatory structures of the countries, meaning that there are both protective factors and tensions in the regulatory framework. While nurses are highly committed to different actions aimed at adolescents, their participation in policy development and implementation is low, with barriers related to a lack of specialized training and working conditions. Conclusions Given nurses’ involvement in different actions aimed at adolescents, they could play a fundamental role in the development of policies for adolescents and ensure their effective implementation. Policymakers should consider revising the budget to make compliance viable, incorporating and using monitoring indicators, and increasing the involvement of educational institutions and the community.

4. 'Second Chances' for Adolescent Mothers: Four Decades of Insights and Lessons on Effectiveness and Scale-Up of Jamaica's PAM

The Women's Center of Jamaica Foundation's (WCJF) Programme for Adolescent Mothers)--has supported pregnant girls and adolescent mothers to have uninterrupted access to education and allied services since 1978. This paper analyzes the conception, establishment, scale up and sustainability of the Programme. The Programme evolved from a small, local initiative into a national and international model. Repeat pregnancy has remained under 2% among programme beneficiaries since inception. While the core package of interventions has remained for the past 40 years, some new dimensions have been added, with the most recent one being support for transition to higher education, all of which are aimed at strengthening the impact of the Programme. The achievements of the Programme were propelled prominently by a progressive national policy environment with the support of several non-state actors. The PAM demonstrates the value of sustained cross-sectoral support, spearheaded, or fully supported by the state in providing opportunities for adolescent mothers.

Integration of multi-omics data improved prediction accuracies of oat agronomic and seed nutritional traits in multi-environment trials and distantly related populations in addition to the single-environment prediction. Multi-omics prediction has been shown to be superior to genomic prediction with genome-wide DNA-based genetic markers (G) for predicting phenotypes. However, most of the existing studies were based on historical datasets from one environment; therefore, they were unable to evaluate the efficiency of multi-omics prediction in multi-environment trials and distantly related populations. To fill those gaps, we designed a systematic experiment to collect omics data and evaluate 17 traits in two oat breeding populations planted in single and multiple environments. In the single-environment trial, transcriptomic BLUP (T), metabolomic BLUP (M), G + T, G + M, and G + T + M models showed greater prediction accuracy than GBLUP for 5, 10, 11, 17, and 17 traits, respectively, and metabolites generally performed better than transcripts when combined with SNPs. In the multi-environment trial, multi-trait models with omics data outperformed both counterpart multi-trait GBLUP models and single-environment omics models, and the highest prediction accuracy was achieved when modeling genetic covariance as an unstructured covariance model. We also demonstrated that omics data can be used to prioritize loci from one population with omics data to improve genomic prediction in a distantly related population using a two-kernel linear model that accommodated both likely casual loci with large-effect and loci that explain little or no phenotypic variance. We propose that the two-kernel linear model is superior to most genomic prediction models that assume each variant is equally likely to affect the trait and can be used to improve prediction accuracy for any trait with prior knowledge of genetic architecture.

9. Effect of Non-Native Endophytic Bacteria on Oat (Avena sativa L.) Growth

Endophytic bacteria are known to influence vital activities of host plants. Endophytes can promote plant growth and provide a defense response against pathogens. The use of endophytes in crop production has the potential to reduce the application of fertilizer and pesticide input and thus improve the sustainability of crop production. In this study, we investigated the effects of seed inoculation with non-native endophytic bacteria, harvested from Brassica carinata, on oat (Avena sativa L.) growth with root vigor assays and greenhouse experiments. For root vigor assay experiments, seeds of two different oat cultivars were treated with 16 endophytic bacteria previously shown to promote growth benefits on multiple crop species. For the greenhouse experiments, the effect of seed inoculation with bacterial isolates was evaluated on ten oat cultivars at two fertilization levels. The root vigor assay showed that multiple isolates, including Bacillus licheniformis, Enterobacter kobei, B. halotolerans, B. cereus, B. aryabhattai, and Lysinibacillus fusiformis, had a positive effect on seedling root growth in one of the two oat cultivars. In the other cultivar, the bacterial isolates had either no effect or a negative effect on root growth. Greenhouse studies showed that the magnitude and direction of the effect of bacterial inoculation on oat growth varied with fertilization levels, bacterial strain, and oat cultivar. However, we identified two cultivars that were more responsive to bacterial inoculation than the others and for which bacterial inoculation of seed resulted in enhanced growth in several traits under both reduced and full nitrogen levels, and this response was observed for the two isolates tested. Our results show that inoculating oat seeds with non-native bacterial endophytes can promote root and shoot growth in oats. Developing biofertilizers that are effective across crop species, crop cultivars, and environmental conditions may be possible if cultivars are selected for their responsiveness across multiple bacterial isolates and in multiple growing environments. Overall, this study indicates that non-native endophytes could be considered for the development of biofertilizers with effectiveness across crop species.

Objective. To examine the homicide trends among young people (10–24 years), adolescents (10–19 years), and young adults (20–24 years) in 33 countries in the Americas between 2000 and 2019, with a focus on inequalities between countries in the burden of homicides. Methods. An ecological study was performed using estimated deaths from 33 countries. Age-adjusted rates, percentage change (PC), average annual percentage change (AAPC), and relative risk (RR) were estimated; besides, analysis on social inequalities was performed. Results. In the Americas between 2000 and 2019, homicide has been the leading cause of death with 54 515 deaths on average each year and an age-adjusted rate of 23.6 per 100 000 among young people. The highest rate was found in the Andean subregion (41.1 per 100 000 young people), which also produced the highest decrease (PC = –37.1% and AAPC = –2.4%) in the study period. The risk of homicide in young men is 8.1 times the risk in young women, and the risk in young adults is 2.5 times the risk in adolescents. The three countries with highest risk of homicide for young people are Venezuela (relative risk [RR] = 35.1), El Salvador (RR = 28.1), and Colombia (RR = 26.7). The estimated excess mortality was 26.8 homicides per 100 000 in the poorest 20% of countries compared to the richest 20% of countries in the period 2000–2009, and it decreased to 13.9 in the period 2010–2019. Conclusions. The results of this study add to the knowledge of homicide among young people and can be used to inform policy and programming in countries. Given the great burden of homicide on young people in the region, it is critical that prevention opportunities are maximized, beginning early in life.

AbstractPregnancy-related complications are a substantial source of morbidity and mortality among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. While the youngest adolescents (those aged 10–14) are considered to be at particularly high risk of adverse outcomes, there is little empirical data available on their sexual and reproductive health. Using a unique dataset of clinical records drawn from a regional network of sentinel centres providing legal abortion and comprehensive post-abortion care in 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries, we described the population of adolescents aged 10–14 seeking legal abortion and post-abortion care and calculated institutional rates of complications, using older adolescents (aged 15–19) and young adults (aged 20–24) as comparator groups. We also assessed the quality of care provided as compared to WHO recommendations. Nearly 17% (89 out of 533) of young adolescents sought care when they were already at 15 or more weeks’ gestation. Young adolescents were at higher risk of pre-procedure and intra-operative complications than older adolescents and young adults, though the trend is less clear for the most severe complications. In general, the quality of care provided by centres in the network was aligned with WHO recommendations for safe abortion and comprehensive post-abortion care. Taken together, these findings provide insight into the challenges facing the global health community in assuring the sexual and reproductive health and rights of the youngest adolescents, and outline avenues for future research, advocacy, and evidence-based policymaking.

AbstractA new public policy was instituted in Argentina for free distribution of subdermal contraceptive implants to women aged 15–24 years old in the public healthcare system. The objective of this study is to determine the extent to which this population adhered to the implant, as well as predictors of continuation. The retrospective cohort study was based on a telephone survey of a random sample of 1101 Ministry of Health-registered implant users concerning the continuation of use, satisfaction with the method and side-effects, and reasons for removal. Descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analysis were used to explore the association between adherence and having received contraceptive counselling, satisfaction, and side effects. We found high levels of adherence (87%) and satisfaction (94%). Common reported side effects were amenorrhoea or infrequent bleeding, perceived weight gain, increased menstrual bleeding and headaches. Multivariate regression analysis indicates that, among adolescents, having received contraceptive counselling increased comfort, while frequent bleeding at six months hindered trust. Participants who had a history of a prior delivery or who had themselves primarily chosen the method were less likely to request the removal of the implant. Our results support the public policy of free implant distribution in the public health sector. This is a sustainable public policy that contributes to equity and access to effective contraception. It is appropriate for adolescents and young women and will also reduce unintended pregnancies. Our results suggest that counselling patients is key prior to insertion of the implant, as it improves acceptability and continuation.

Abstract Selection for more nutritious crop plants is an important goal of plant breeding to improve food quality and contribute to human health outcomes. While there are efforts to integrate genomic prediction to accelerate breeding progress, an ongoing challenge is identifying strategies to improve accuracy when predicting within biparental populations in breeding programs. We tested multiple genomic prediction methods for 12 seed fatty acid content traits in oat (Avena sativa L.), as unsaturated fatty acids are a key nutritional trait in oat. Using two well‐characterized oat germplasm panels and other biparental families as training populations, we predicted family mean and individual values within families. Genomic prediction of family mean exceeded a mean accuracy of 0.40 and 0.80 using an unrelated and related germplasm panel, respectively, where the related germplasm panel outperformed prediction based on phenotypic means (0.54). Within family prediction accuracy was more variable: training on the related germplasm had higher accuracy than the unrelated panel (0.14–0.16 and 0.05–0.07, respectively), but variability between families was not easily predicted by parent relatedness, segregation of a locus detected by a genome‐wide association study in the panel, or other characteristics. When using other families as training populations, prediction accuracies were comparable to the related germplasm panel (0.11–0.23), and families that had half‐sib families in the training set had higher prediction accuracy than those that did not. Overall, this work provides an example of genomic prediction of family means and within biparental families for an important nutritional trait and suggests that using related germplasm panels as training populations can be effective.

Parascaris spp es el parásito de mayor prevalencia e importancia en potrillos de todo el mundo. Puede causar síndromes de mala absorción y retardos en el crecimiento en animales severamente parasitados. Sin embargo, la manifestación clínica más importante es la impactación del intestino delgado que puede ocurrir en una pequeña proporción de potrillos infectados y es asociado a un pronóstico reservado de sobrevida. Los animales adultos presentan inmunidad sólida luego de los dos años de vida y puede ser hallado ocasionalmente en esta categoría siendo de baja importancia clínica salvo casos excepcionales. El control se basa en la administración de antihelmínticos, pero la resistencia a las lactonas macrocíclicas es actualmente común en todo el mundo. En nuestro país no existen estudios sobre la prevalencia de estos fenómenos y los casos documentados pertenecen a dos establecimientos puntuales de la provincia de Córdoba1,2. El objetivo de este informe es expandir y actualizar datos y evidencias sobre la ineficacia de las lactonas macrocíclicas para el control de Parascaris spp en el área central de Argentina e informar sobre alternativas terapéuticas y nuevas herramientas para complementar los análisis coproparasitológicos con el fin de mejorar la sensibilidad diagnóstica y el control de este parásito.

La piroplasmosis canina es una hemoparasitosis distribuida mundialmente y transmitida por garrapatas. Babesia vogeli es el piroplasma de mayor distribución debido a la naturaleza cosmopolita de su principal vector, la garrapata Rhipicephalus sanguineus. El uso de la microscopia a partir de frotis de sangre capilar es un método simple, accesible y de fácil implementación en la clínica diaria para el diagnóstico de piroplasmas y hemopatogenos asociados. Los objetivos de este trabajo son: a) determinar la presencia de piroplasmas en frotis sanguíneos de perros con garrapatas procedentes de la ciudad de Córdoba; b) identificar las garrapatas presentes en los casos positivos y c) establecer la presencia de coinfecciones con otros hemopatogenos transmitidos por garrapatas.

17. Uso de antihelmínticos en grandes establecimientos de producción equina de la Argentina

En el contexto actual de la resistencia a los antihelmínticos, el conocimiento sobre las prácticas de control parasitario y el uso de las drogas por parte de los veterinarios en el campo, es indispensable para formular estrategias sustentables para el manejo y el control de los principales nematodes intestinales que afectan a los equinos. Con este objetivo se desarrolló una encuesta entrevistando personalmente o telefónicamente a 80 veterinarios especializados en medicina equina y que asesoran y son responsables de la sanidad general de 85 establecimientos equinos que producen caballos de silla en el área centro y norte de la Argentina. El control parasitario fue estudiado en 17.711 equinos (con 48 a 1860 animales por establecimiento). En más del 65% de los establecimientos fueron tratados con una frecuencia de entre 3 y 4 veces al año. La ivermectina fue el antihelmíntico más empleado (99% de los establecimientos), seguido por los benzimidazoles (44%), pirantel (13%) y combinaciones de moxidectina/ oxfendazole (6%). A pesar de la información documentada en el país indicando la resistencia de Parascaris spp a las lactonas macrocíclicas y de los pequeños estróngilos a los bencimidazoles, el uso de estas drogas para controlar estos parásitos continúa siendo una práctica en la región estudiada. Los veterinarios involucrados con la especie equina deberían monitorear y conocer la eficacia de los antihelmínticos en cada establecimiento antes de instaurar programas de control parasitario. Esta información es crítica ya que la resistencia antihelmíntica debería considerarse como probable en potrillos y, adultos y ninguno los dos grupos químicos más usados en el área central de la Argentina pueden ser considerados como antihelmínticos de amplio espectro sin evidencias previas de su eficacia.

Objetivo. Develar las experiencias y determinantes de la participación de adolescentes y jóvenes en mecanismos formales de participación durante la pandemia por SARS-CoV-2 en Chile. Métodos. Estudio transversal, descriptivo de enfoque cualitativo, adscrito al paradigma constructivista de investigación. Se realizaron 3 grupos focales con informantes claves, adolescentes y jóvenes, quienes participan regularmente en consejos consultivos del Ministerio de Salud (MINSAL) en Chile. Se aplicó la técnica de análisis de contenido para categorías teóricas y emergentes del estudio. Los relatos fueron transcritos y estudiados con técnica de análisis de datos y hermenéutica. Este estudio fue realizado durante la pandemia de COVID-19, entre los meses de marzo y noviembre del 2021. Resultados. Durante la pandemia, las experiencias de participación en salud de adolescentes y jóvenes se vieron afectadas; no obstante, los mecanismos de participación formales, como los consejos consultivos, permitieron dar continuidad. En este contexto, adolescentes y jóvenes dentro de sus experiencias destacaron algunos factores que facilitaron o limitaron la participación, de acuerdo con tres niveles de gestión: individual, relacional y estructural, destacándo la comunicación virtual, el uso de redes sociales y la salud digital como excelentes herramientas para la participación de jóvenes y adolescentes en tiempos de pandemia en Chile. Conclusión. La pandemia ha afectado a los mecanismos de participación de adolescentes y jóvenes en Chile. No obstante, dentro de las experiencias destacadas por los jóvenes han surgido aspectos como la comunicación virtual, la salud digital y otras estrategias que han facilitado la participación. Por otro lado, en esta crisis sanitaria mundial se han acrecentado algunas brechas en la participación en salud, como el acceso principalmente en poblaciones rurales.

La iniciativa Todas las Mujeres Todos los Niños América Latina y el Caribe (EWEC-LAC, por su sigla en inglés) se estableció en el 2017 como un mecanismo interinstitucional regional. Coordina la implementación regional de la Estrategia Mundial para la Salud de la Mujer, el Niño y el Adolescente 2016-2030 en América Latina y el Caribe (ALC), lo que incluye su adaptación a necesidades específicas de la Región, para poner fin a las muertes evitables, garantizar la salud y el bienestar, y ampliar los entornos propicios para la salud y el bienestar de mujeres, niños y adolescentes. Para promover el logro equitativo de estos objetivos, los tres grupos de trabajo de EWEC-LAC apoyan colectivamente a los países de ALC en la medición y el monitoreo de las desigualdades sociales en la salud, la promoción de la disminución de estas y el diseño e implementación de estrategias, políticas e intervenciones orientadas a la equidad. Este apoyo para cerrar las brechas actuales asegura que nadie se quede atrás. Los miembros de la iniciativa EWEC-LAC incluyen al UNFPA, la OPS, ONU-Mujeres, ONUSIDA, UNICEF, el Banco Mundial, el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, USAID, la Alianza Regional Neonatal para ALC y el Grupo de Trabajo Regional para la Reducción de la Mortalidad Materna. A la fecha, EWEC-LAC ha desarrollado y recopilado herramientas y recursos innovadores, y ha comenzado a colaborar con los países para utilizarlos a fin de reducir las brechas en la equidad. Estos incluyen un marco de medición de las desigualdades sociales en la salud, herramientas de promoción de datos, como un tablero de datos para visualizar tendencias en las desigualdades sociales en la salud, una metodología para establecer metas en la disminución de las desigualdades, y un compendio de herramientas y métodos para identificar y abordar las desigualdades sociales en la salud. Introduction Comprehensive local data on adolescent health are often lacking, particularly in lower resource settings. Furthermore, there are knowledge gaps around which interventions are effective to support healthy behaviours. This study generates health information for students from cities in four middle-income countries to plan, implement and subsequently evaluate a package of interventions to improve health outcomes.Methods and analysis We will conduct a cluster randomised controlled trial in schools in Fez, Morocco; Jaipur, India; Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica; and Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. In each city, approximately 30 schools will be randomly selected and assigned to the control or intervention arm. Baseline data collection includes three components. First, a Global School Health Policies and Practices Survey (G-SHPPS) to be completed by principals of all selected schools. Second, a Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) to be administered to a target sample of n=3153 13–17 years old students of randomly selected classes of these schools, including questions on alcohol, tobacco and drug use, diet, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviours, violence and injury. Third, a study validating the GSHS physical activity questions against wrist-worn accelerometry in one randomly selected class in each control school (n approximately 300 students per city). Intervention schools will develop a suite of interventions using a participatory approach driven by students and involving parents/guardians, teachers and community stakeholders. Interventions will aim to change existing structures and policies at schools to positively influence students’ behaviour, using the collected data and guided by the framework for Making Every School a Health Promoting School. Objetivo. Describir los resultados en salud de los hombres a partir del análisis sobre la interrelación de estos con las masculinidades, que permitirá la identificación de acciones para mejorar los resultados de salud de hombres, mujeres y niños. Métodos. Actualización y expansión de los hallazgos del informe Masculinidades y Salud en las Américas publicado por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud en el 2019, el cual se realizó a partir de una búsqueda intencionada y actualizada de datos secundarios sobre la salud masculina y otras investigaciones que abordan la temática. Resultados. La salud de los hombres y de las mujeres es distinta, no solo por los factores biológicos, sino también por la construcción y las desigualdades de género, y la intersección de los determinantes sociales. Existen importantes diferencias en los patrones de mortalidad y morbilidad por sexo a lo largo del curso de vida, incluida la sobremortalidad de los hombres por causas prevenibles como las muertes violentas, los accidentes viales y el consumo de alcohol y otras drogas (cocaína, cannabis y anfetaminas, entre otras). Varias de las causas de la mortalidad y la morbilidad se encuentran vinculadas con la expresión del modelo hegemónico de masculinidad y esto representa un riesgo para la salud integral de los hombres y para las personas cercanas. Conclusiones. Proponemos que se deben políticas coordinadas e intersectoriales con perspectiva de género relacional e interseccional que incluyan a los hombres para generar acciones de salud en todas las políticas para la diversidad de hombres con consecuencias positivas también para niños, adolescentes y mujeres.

26. A systematic review of the prevalence of selected sexually transmitted infections in young people in Latin America

Objective. To estimate the burden of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), Treponema pallidum (TP), and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among people aged 10 to 25 in Latin America and the Caribbean. Methods. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and LILACS databases were searched, as well as documents from regional organizations or national health Institutions. Population-based studies that reported prevalence or incidenceof CT, NG, TP, and HPV detected through confirmatory tests in adolescents and young people were included. Two reviewers independently selected studies and extracted data. The quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Pooled estimators were calculated in cases where heterogeneity was 70%), it was not possible to pool frequency estimators. Among the general population, the prevalence of CT infection ranged between 2.1% and 30.1% (9 studies, 5 670 participants); for NG, prevalence ranged between 0% and 2.9% (8 studies, 5 855 participants); for TP, prevalence varied between 0% and 0.7% (3 studies, 11 208 participants), and for HPV infection, prevalence ranged between 25.1% and 55.6% (8 studies, 3 831 participants). Conclusions. Reliable, population-based data on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents and youth in Latin America and the Caribbean are limited. Additional studies are needed to better understand the burden of STIs in this population. However, given the substantial prevalence of STIs detected, countries need public health policies for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of STIs in young people.

27. Evaluation of Morpho-Physiological Traits of Oat (Avena sativa L.) under Drought Stress

The increase in intensity and frequency of drought due to global climate change has increased the urgency of developing crop cultivars suitable for dry environments. Drought tolerance is a complex trait that involves numerous physiological, biochemical, and morphological responses. A better understanding of those mechanisms is critical to develop drought tolerant cultivars. In this study, we aimed to understand the morphophysiological changes at the shoot and root levels in response to drought stress of ten oat genotypes with diverse root morphological characteristics. Twenty-one-day old plants were subjected to drought stress in a greenhouse by withholding water for two weeks. Several characteristics including chlorophyll content, relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance, stomata number, shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW), root-to-shoot biomass ratio (RSR), root length, root area, and root volume were measured on well-watered, and drought-stressed plants. Grain yield was evaluated by continuing the drought treatment with a drying and rewatering cycle every 15 days until physiological maturity. The water regime had a significant impact on all traits evaluated. A significant interaction between genotype and water treatment was observed for RWC, chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, stomata number, and grain yield but not for root traits, suggesting that the root system of all genotypes responded similarly to drought stress. Hayden, the cultivar with the lowest reduction in grain yield from the drought treatment, was among the genotypes with the lowest reduction in RWC and chlorophyll content but with a sharp decrease in stomata number, thus indicating that regulating the plant water status and maintaining the photosynthesis level are important for oat plants to maintain grain yield under drought stress. The size of the root system was not correlated with grain yield under drought, but the RWC and grain yield were significantly correlated under drought, thus suggesting that maintaining the RWC is an important characteristic for oat plants to maintain yield under drought stress.

28. Utilizing Spectral, Structural and Textural Features for Estimating Oat Above-Ground Biomass Using UAV-Based Multispectral Data and Machine Learning

Accurate and timely monitoring of biomass in breeding nurseries is essential for evaluating plant performance and selecting superior genotypes. Traditional methods for phenotyping above-ground biomass in field conditions requires significant time, cost, and labor. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer a rapid and non-destructive approach for phenotyping multiple field plots at a low cost. While Vegetation Indices (VIs) extracted from remote sensing imagery have been widely employed for biomass estimation, they mainly capture spectral information and disregard the 3D canopy structure and spatial pixel relationships. Addressing these limitations, this study, conducted in 2020 and 2021, aimed to explore the potential of integrating UAV multispectral imagery-derived canopy spectral, structural, and textural features with machine learning algorithms for accurate oat biomass estimation. Six oat genotypes planted at two seeding rates were evaluated in two South Dakota locations at multiple growth stages. Plot-level canopy spectral, structural, and textural features were extracted from the multispectral imagery and used as input variables for three machine learning models: Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Random Forest Regression (RFR). The results showed that (1) in addition to canopy spectral features, canopy structural and textural features are also important indicators for oat biomass estimation; (2) combining spectral, structural, and textural features significantly improved biomass estimation accuracy over using a single feature type; (3) machine learning algorithms showed good predictive ability with slightly better estimation accuracy shown by RFR (R2 = 0.926 and relative root mean square error (RMSE%) = 15.97%). This study demonstrated the benefits of UAV imagery-based multi-feature fusion using machine learning for above-ground biomass estimation in oat breeding nurseries, holding promise for enhancing the efficiency of oat breeding through UAV-based phenotyping and crop management practices.

A better understanding of the work environment factors and its impact on Korean American nurse and primary care provider (PCP) burnout may guide the development of targeted strategies to help mitigate burnout and workplace stressors, which is critical for the retention of Korean American nurses and PCPs to promote better alignment of national demographic trends and meet patients’ preference for cultural congruence with their health care providers (HCPs). Although there is a growing number of studies on HCP burnout, a limited number of studies specifically focus on the experience of ethnic minority HCPs, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. ObjectiveIn light of these gaps in literature, the aim of this study was to assess burnout among Korean American HCPs and to identify work conditions during a pandemic that may be associated with Korean American nurse and PCP burnout. MethodsA total of 184 Korean American HCPs (registered nurses [RNs]: n=97; PCPs: n=87) practicing in Southern California responded to a web-based survey between February and April 2021. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, Areas of Worklife Survey, and Pandemic Experience & Perceptions Survey were used to measure burnout and work environment factors during the pandemic. Summary: Background: Afrodescendants are systematically affected by discrimination in the Americas and few multi-country studies addressed ethnic inequalities in health and wellbeing in the region. We aimed to investigate gaps in coverage of key health outcomes and socioeconomic inequalities between Afrodescendants and non-Afrodescendants populations in Latin American and Caribbean countries. Methods: Using national household surveys (2011–2019) from ten countries, we analyzed absolute inequalities between Afrodescendants and a comparison group that includes non-Afrodescendants and non-Indigenous individuals (henceforth non-Afrodescendants) across 17 indicators in the continuum of reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. These include indicators of family planning, antenatal care, delivery assistance, child nutrition, immunization coverage, child protection, access to improved water, sanitation and hygiene, adolescent fertility, and early childhood mortality. Inequalities between country-specific subgroups of Afrodescendants were also explored. The slope index of inequality was used to assess wealth-based inequalities within each ethnic group. Findings: Afrodescendants represented from 2·8% (Honduras) to 59·1% (Brazil) of the national samples. Of the 128 combinations of country and indicators with data, Afrodescendants fared worse in 78 (of which 33 were significant) and performed better in 50 (15 significant). More systematic disadvantages for Afrodescendants were found for demand for family planning satisfied, early marriage, and household handwashing and sanitation facilities. In contrast, Afrodescendants tended to present lower c-section rates and lower stunting prevalence. Honduras was the only country where Afrodescendants performed better than non-Afrodescendants in several indicators. Wealth gaps among Afrodescendants were wider than those observed for non-Afrodescendants for most indicators and across all countries. Interpretation: Gaps in health outcomes between Afrodescendants and non-Afrodescendants were observed in most countries, with more frequent disadvantages for the former although, in many cases, the gaps were reversed. 37. Probabilistic Volcanic Hazard Assessment of the 22.5–28°S Segment of the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes

Evaluation of volcanic hazards typically focusses on single eruptive centres or spatially restricted areas, such as volcanic fields. Expanding hazard assessments across wide regions (e.g., large sections of a continental margin) has rarely been attempted, due to the complexity of integrating temporal and spatial variability in tectonic and magmatic processes. In this study, we investigate new approaches to quantify the hazards of such long-term active and complex settings, using the example of the 22.5–28°S segment of the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes. This research is based on the estimation of: 1) spatial probability of future volcanic activity (based on kernel density estimation using a new volcanic geospatial database), 2) temporal probability of future volcanic events, and 3) areas susceptible to volcanic flow and fall processes (based on computer modeling). Integrating these results, we produce a set of volcanic hazard maps. We then calculate the relative probabilities of population centres in the area being affected by any volcanic phenomenon. Touristic towns such as La Poma (Argentina), Toconao (Chile), Antofagasta de la Sierra (Argentina), Socaire (Chile), and Talabre (Chile) are exposed to the highest relative volcanic hazard. In addition, through this work we delineate five regions of high spatial probability (i.e., volcanic clusters), three of which correlate well with geophysical evidence of mid-crustal partial melt bodies. Many of the eruptive centres within these volcanic clusters have poorly known eruption histories and are recommended to be targeted for future work. We hope this contribution will be a useful approach to encourage probabilistic volcanic hazard assessments for other arc segments.

Abstract Plant metabolites are important traits for plant breeders seeking to improve nutrition and agronomic performance yet integrating selection for metabolomic traits can be limited by phenotyping expense and degree of genetic characterization, especially of uncommon metabolites. As such, developing generalizable genomic selection methods based on biochemical pathway biology for metabolites that are transferable across plant populations would benefit plant breeding programs. We tested genomic prediction accuracy for >600 metabolites measured by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC‐MS) in oat (Avena sativa L.) seed. Using a discovery germplasm panel, we conducted metabolite genome‐wide association study (mGWAS) and selected loci to use in multikernel models that encompassed metabolome‐wide mGWAS results or mGWAS from specific metabolite structures or biosynthetic pathways. Metabolite kernels developed from LC‐MS metabolites in the discovery panel improved prediction accuracy of LC‐MS metabolite traits in the validation panel consisting of more advanced breeding lines. No approach, however, improved prediction accuracy for GC‐MS metabolites. We ranked model performance by metabolite and found that metabolites with similar polarity had consistent rankings of models. Overall, testing biological rationales for developing kernels for genomic prediction across populations contributes to developing frameworks for plant breeding for metabolite traits.

O objetivo deste artigo foi divulgar o resultado da investigação sobre a constituição dos saberes da Lógica no curso de formação de professores de matemática da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana. Para isso, realizamos um estudo das ferramentas teórico-metodológicas apresentadas por Hofstetter e Schneuwly (2017) sobre os saberes profissionais constituídos para o ensino e a formação de professores. A discussão foi pautada por uma análise dos projetos político-pedagógicos desta Universidade desde a implantação do curso de Licenciatura Plena em 1976, passando pelo currículo 314 até o currículo 318-atualizado em 2018. A disciplina que trata dos saberes da Lógica pelos professores neste curso de formação de professores foi constituída no Departamento de Ciências Humanas e Filosofia sob o título de Tópicos Especiais em Lógica migrando para o Departamento de Ciências Exatas com o nome de Lógica Matemática e Teoria dos Conjuntos implantada no currículo 318. Sendo educadores matemáticos, entendemos que os conteúdos transversais da Lógica são tratados nas demais disciplinas do curso o método dedutivo com teoria dos conjuntos como linguagem ou mesmo quando utilizados testes matemáticos, saberes de lógica proposicional e lógica de predicados.

Oat (Avena sativa L.) production worldwide is constrained by crown rust (caused by Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae), which can cause significant yield losses. The disease is often controlled by spraying fungicides or planting resistant cultivars. Developing host resistance, however, is a challenge due to the high genetic variability of the pathogen. Race‐specific resistance usually succumbs to new races in just a few years. As such, the USDA‐ARS Cereal Disease Laboratory developed mapping populations to identify adult plant resistance (APR) loci from Avena sativa donors. Resistant lines from the mapping populations were selected and crossed with buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica L.) nursery selection lines BT1020‐1‐1 and BT1021‐1‐1, which possess a different gene for crown rust resistance derived from Avena strigosa. From the crosses, CDL‐111 (Reg. no. GP‐122, PI 702639) and CDL‐167 (Reg. no. GP‐123, PI 702640), both containing three APR quantitative trait loci, were selected as germplasm for resistance breeding. High‐throughput markers for selection were developed and implemented in pyramiding the APR loci. Context: Long-term multi-environment trials (METs) could improve genomic prediction models for plant breeding programs by better representing the target population of environments (TPE). However, METs are generally highly unbalanced because genotypes are routinely dropped from trials after a few years. Furthermore, in the presence of genotype × environment interaction (GEI), selection of the environments to include in a prediction set becomes critical to represent specific TPEs. Aims: The goals of this study were to compare strategies for modelling GEI in genomic prediction, using large METs from oat (Avena sativa L.) breeding programs in the Midwest United States, and to develop a variety decision tool for farmers and plant breeders. Methods: The performance of genotypes in TPEs was predicted by using different strategies for handling GEI in genomic prediction models including systematic and/or random GEI components. These strategies were also used to build the variety decision tool for farmers. Key results: Genomic prediction for unknown genotypes, locations and years within TPEs had moderate to high predictive ability, accuracy and reliability. Modelling GEI was beneficial in small, but not in large, mega-environments. The latest 3 years were highly predictive of performance in an upcoming year for most years but not for years with unusual weather patterns. High predictive ability, accuracy and reliability were obtained when large datasets were used in TPEs. Conclusions: Deployment of historical datasets can be accomplished through meaningful delineation and prediction for TPEs. Implications: We have shown the performance of a simple modelling strategy for handling prediction for TPEs when deploying large historical datasets. Rankings of genotypic performance may change from one environment to the next, creating genotype × environment interaction (GEI), which can impact genomic prediction and complicate identification of superior genotypes. We compared strategies for predicting the performance of individuals in the presence of GEI. The results provide useful tools for the optimisation of training populations and testing environments for the prediction of individuals in the targeted populations of environments.
