1. Ab initio study of Proximity-Induced Superconductivity in PbTe/Pb heterostructures

Abstract

Semiconductor-superconductor hybrid devices have been proposed as promising platforms for detecting and analyzing Majorana zero modes, which find applications in topological quantum computing. In this work, we solve the Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to describe the normal and superconducting properties of a PbTe/Pb heterostructure. We resolve a proximity-induced superconducting gap on the PbTe side. The hybridization between PbTe and Pb causes the emergence of a soft Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like superconducting gap. We compute the anomalous charge density in real space, estimating its decay length and showing that the pairing potential is anisotropic, which is a necessary condition for unconventional superconductivity. Contrary to the models that predict Majorana zero modes in these interfaces, we find a significantly large Schottky barrier in the normal state preventing the emergence of zero modes. Our findings strengthen the understanding of the physics governing PbTe/Pb hybrid devices and their viability for Majorana zero modes applications.

Abstract

ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the effect of diets with Ganoderma lucidum mushroom powder and zinc-bacitracin on growth performance, carcass traits, lymphoid organ weights, and intestinal characteristics in broilers, a total of 600 one-day-old unsexed broilers from Cobb 500 MV × Cobb 500 FF genotype was analyzed for 28 days, following a completely randomized design with three dietary treatments, five replicates and 40 birds per replicate. The dietary treatments consisted of a basal diet (BD) without additives (T0) and the dietary inclusion of 2.5 g/kg of Ganoderma lucidum (T1) and 350 mg/kg of zinc bacitracin antibiotic (T2). The experimental groups did not change (p>0.05) the performance of the broilers. However, G. lucidum powder increased (p≤0.05) the carcass and breast yields (p≤0.05) and decreased the abdominal fat and liver yields (p≤0.05), although with no notable differences with the antibiotic group for the latter organ (liver) (p>0.05). Both additives (G. lucidum and antibiotic) increased breast meat moisture, protein, and redness; however, these treatments reduced L* (lightness), and the zinc-bacitracin reduced breast yellowness (p≤0.05). Likewise, this medicinal mushroom (G. lucidum) increased the relative weight of bursa of Fabricius and the morphometry of the small intestine (p≤0.05), although with no changes for other immune and digestive organs or for the content of cecal lactic acid bacteria (p>0.05). The dietary inclusion with 2.5 g/kg of Ganoderma lucidum powder is recommended to improve breast yield, protein, and colorimetry without affecting performance and cecal traits of fast-growing broilers.

Abstract

We demonstrate that a fully metallic and air-filled geodesic waveguide can be employed as an analog electromagnetic model of a static and spherically symmetric gravitational field. By following the Plebanski formalism, a space-time metric of the aforementioned type is firstly encoded into the electromagnetic properties of a flat space-time region in the form of an isotropic and radially varying refractive index distribution. Then, a three-dimensional, air-filled, and axially symmetric waveguide, composed of two equally spaced and curved metallic surfaces, is employed. Its shape is tailored such that the effective paths, followed by transverse electromagnetic beams of microwave radiation within this waveguide, result equivalent to null-geodesics taking place in the aforementioned refractive medium. This strategy avoids the need for a refractive medium, although it only allows to reproduce the space-time metric on the invariant plane. Two analog electromagnetic models of gravity, using the proposed approach, are designed to reproduce the metric of both a Schwarzschild black hole and a Morris-Thorne wormhole. Abstract

We developed SaludConectaMX as a comprehensive system to track and understand the determinants of complications throughout chemotherapy treatment for children with cancer in Mexico. SaludConectaMX is unique in that it integrates patient clinical indicators with social determinants and caregiver mental health, forming a social-clinical perspective of the patient's evolving health trajectory. The system is composed of a web application (for hospital staff) and a mobile application (for family caregivers), providing the opportunity for cooperative patient monitoring in both hospital and home settings. This paper presents the system's preliminary design and usability evaluation results from a 1.5-year pilot study. Our findings indicate that while the hospital web app demonstrates high completion rates and user satisfaction, the family mobile app requires additional improvements for optimal accessibility; statistical and qualitative data analysis illuminate pathways for system improvement. Based on this evidence, we formalize suggestions for health system development in LMICs, which HCI researchers may leverage in future work.

Abstract

Integrated frequency comb generators based on Kerr parametric oscillation have led to chip-scale, gigahertz-spaced combs with new applications spanning hyperscale telecommunications, low-noise microwave synthesis, LiDAR, and astrophysical spectrometer calibration. Recent progress in lithium niobate (LN) photonic integrated circuits (PICs) has resulted in chip-scale electro-optic (EO) frequency combs, offering precise comb-line positioning and simple operation without relying on the formation of dissipative Kerr solitons. However, current integrated EO combs face limited spectral coverage due to the large microwave power required to drive the non-resonant capacitive electrodes and the strong intrinsic birefringence of Lithium Niobate. Here, we overcome both challenges with an integrated triply resonant architecture, combining monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) with PICs based on the recently emerged thin-film lithium tantalate. With resonantly enhanced EO interaction and reduced birefringence in Lithium Tantalate, we achieve a four-fold comb span extension and a 16-fold power reduction compared to the conventional non-resonant microwave design. Driven by a hybrid-integrated laser diode, the comb spans over 450nm (60THz) with >2000 lines, and the generator fits within a compact 1cm^2 footprint. We additionally observe that the strong EO coupling leads to an increased comb existence range approaching the full free spectral range of the optical microresonator. The ultra-broadband comb generator, combined with detuning-agnostic operation, could advance chip-scale spectrometry and ultra-low-noise millimeter wave synthesis and unlock octave-spanning EO combs. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was designed to determine the effect of a combination of propionic-acetic acid on body weight, the relative weight of some organs, lactic acid bacteria, and intestinal pH of neonatal broilers. A total of 60 1-day-old Ross 308® broiler chickens were randomly placed in metabolic cages to two treatments, three replicates, and ten birds per replicates. The treatments consisted of a control diet (CD) and CD + 0.03% of propionic acid and acetic acid in the drinking water at a rate of 4 ml/L of water. The combination of organic acids depressed the body weight in neonatal broilers (p0.05) between treatments. The combined use in the diet and drinking water of the propionic and acetic organic acids, respectively, reduced the bodyweight of neonatal broilers (10 days) and the cecal pH, as well as modified the relative weights of some digestive organs and the growth of some morphological groups of lactic acid bacteria.

Abstract

We present an analysis of high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of the symbiotic system R Aquarii (R Aqr) obtained with the Manchester Echelle Spectrograph (MES) at the 2.1 m telescope of the San Pedro M\'artir Observatory (Mexico). An interpretation of these data is presented by means of the shape software to disclose the morpho-kinematics of the nebulosities associated with R Aqr. The best model that reproduces narrow-band images and position-velocity diagrams is composed by three structures: an outer (large) hourglass structure surrounding an inner bipolar with a spiral-like filament entwined around the later. Different expansion velocity patterns are predefined for each structure, which predict kinematic ages of $\tau_{1}$=450$\pm$25 yr (outer hourglass), $\tau_{2}$=240$\pm$20 yr (inner bipolar) and $\tau_{3}$=215$\pm$20 yr (spiral-like filament). We suggest that the spiral-like filament is tracing the regions of interaction of the precessing jet with the circumstellar material, which simultaneously carves the inner bipolar structure. If a similar process created the large hourglass structure, it means that the action of the jet ceased for about 230 yr. 11. Excitonic response in TMD heterostructures from first-principles: impact of stacking, twisting, and interlayer distance

Abstract

Van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides provide a unique platform to engineer optoelectronic devices tuning their optical properties via stacking, twisting, or straining. Using ab initio Many-Body Perturbation Theory, we predict the electronic and optical (absorption and photoluminescence spectra) properties of MoS$_2$/WS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ hetero-bilayers with different stacking and twisting. We analyse the valley splitting and optical transitions, and explain the enhancement or quenching of the inter- and intra-layer exciton states. Contrary to established models, that focus on transitions near the high-symmetry point K, our results include all possible transitions across the Brillouin Zone. This result, for a twisted Se-based heterostructures, in an interlayer exciton with significant electron density in both layers and a mixed intralayer exciton distributed over both MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We propose that it should be possible to produce an inverted order of the excitonic states in some MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures, where the energy of the intralayer WSe$_2$ exciton is lower than that in MoSe$_2$. We predict the variability of the exciton peak positions ($\sim$100 meV) and the exciton radiative lifetimes, from pico- to nano-seconds, and even micro-seconds in twisted bilayers. The control of exciton energies and lifetimes paves the way towards applications in quantum information technologies and optical sensing.

12. ANTERIOR CINGULATE CORTEX DYSFUNCTION IN FRAGILE X SYNDROME

Abstract

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is often accompanied by sensory hyperarousal andhypersensitivity, leading to cognitive impairments in attention, learning, and memory. To betterunderstand the neural mechanisms underlying hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli, weinvestigated how these atypical sensory processes influence goal-directed behavior by using ananimal model of FXS- Fmr1 Knockout (FMR1 KO) mice. Compared to wild-type (WT) mice,Fmr1 KO mice displayed greater vulnerability to distracting auditory and visual stimuli whenperforming the same visual discrimination task, suggesting hypersensitivity and inability toignore distractors. Prior studies have found that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is involvedin increasing cortical responses to behaviorally relevant information (Zhang et al, 2014; Fiser etal., 2016; Norman et al. 2021). We propose that dysfunction in inputs from ACC→V1 maycontribute to the ability to ignore sensory distractors and selectively attend to behaviorallyrelevant stimuli in Fmr1 KO mice. This is supported by in vivo two-photon calcium imaging ofACC axon terminals in V1, which shows reduced modulation of ACC→V1 input duringdistractor susceptibility in Fmr1 KO. Inactivation of ACC prevents WT mice from overcomingdistractors and elevating ACC function using Methylphenidate showed trends for reduceddistractibility in Fmr1 KO mice. Identifying disruptions in these long-range inputs to V1 willprovide knowledge about the mechanistic understanding of sensory hypersensitivity in a range ofneurodevelopmental disorders.

13. Exploring the Impact of a Fraction Sense Intervention in Authentic School Environments: An Initial Investigation

Abstract

A solid understanding of fractions is the cornerstone for acquiring proficiency with rational numbers and paves the way for learning advanced mathematical concepts, such as algebra. Fraction difficulties limit not only students' educational and vocational opportunities but also their ability to solve everyday problems. Students who exit 6th grade with inadequate understanding of fractions may experience far-reaching repercussions that lead to lifelong avoidance of mathematics. This paper presents the results of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) focusing on the first two cohorts of a larger efficacy investigation aimed at building fraction sense in students with mathematics difficulties. Teachers implemented an evidence-informed fraction sense intervention (FSI) within their 6th-grade intervention classrooms. The lessons draw from research in cognitive science as well as mathematics education research. Employing random assignment at the classroom level, multilevel modeling revealed a significant effect of the intervention on posttest fractions scores, after controlling for pretest fractions scores, working memory, vocabulary, proportional reasoning, and classroom attentive behavior. Students in the FSI group outperformed their counterparts in the control group with noteworthy effect sizes on most fraction measures. Abstract

The twisted hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) bilayer has demonstrated exceptional properties, particularly the existence of electronic flat bands without needing a magic angle, suggesting strong excitonic effects. Therefore, a systematic approach is presented to study the excitonic properties of twisted AA' hBN using the Bethe-Salpeter equation based on single-particle tight-binding wave functions. These are provided by a one-particle Hamiltonian that is parameterized to describe the main features of {\it ab initio} calculations. The Bethe-Salpeter equation is then solved in the so-called excitonic transition representation, which significantly reduces the problem dimensionality by exploiting the system's symmetries. Consequently, the excitonic energies and the excitonic wave functions are obtained from the direct diagonalization of the effective two-particle Hamiltonian of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We have studied rotation angles as low as $7.34^{\circ}$. The model allows the study of commensurate and incommensurate moir\'e patterns at much lower computational cost than the {\it ab initio} version of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Here, using the model and effective screening of the Keldysh type, we could obtain the absorption spectra and characterize the excitonic properties of twisted hBN bilayers for different rotation angles, demonstrating how this property affects the excitonic energies and localizations of their wavefunctions., Comment: 32 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

We present the analysis of archival XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of CH Cyg, one of the most studied symbiotic stars (SySts). The combination of the high-resolution XMM-Newton RGS and Chandra HETG X-ray spectra allowed us to obtain reliable estimates of the chemical abundances and to corroborate the presence of multi-temperature X-ray-emitting gas. Spectral fitting of the medium-resolution XMM-Newton MOS (MOS1+MOS2) spectrum required the use of an additional component not seen in previous studies in order to fit the 2.0-4.0 keV energy range. Detailed spectral modelling of the XMM-Newton MOS data suggests the presence of a reflection component, very similar to that found in active galactic nuclei. The reflection component is very likely produced by an ionised disk (the accretion disk around the white dwarf) and naturally explains the presence of the fluorescent Fe emission line at 6.4 keV while also contributing to the soft and medium energy ranges. The variability of the global X-ray properties of CH Cyg are discussed as well as the variation of the three Fe lines around the 6-7 keV energy range. Abstract

"So what do you do? I mean, what do you actually do?" This is one of the most common questions one theoretical physicist receives from her students, and is representative of a common curiosity among aspiring physicists. Students often misunderstand what different types of physicists actually do. For many, the term "theoretical physicist" likely conjures mental images of Einstein, Feynman, or Sheldon Cooper discerning the underlying operating principles of the universe, armed with only pencil and paper. Such imagery is representative of the "lone genius" stereotype many students ascribe to physicists. However, this common perception of physicists is known to discourage students, particularly underrepresented gender and racial groups, from pursuing it as a career. Moreover, students of all demographic backgrounds may avoid physics if they feel they do not understand what different kinds of physicists do on a daily basis. Therefore, providing students with an accurate depiction of the skills, practices, motivations, and daily routines in different types physics careers is essential for helping them make decisions about their future. In this article, we offer students a glimpse into what a career in theoretical physics is like. Through interviews with 11 practicing theoretical physics faculty, we reveal a variety of misconceptions theorists believe students hold about their work. Abstract

In this manuscript, we present an alternative method for calculating null geodesics in General Static Isotropic Metrics in General Relativity and Extended Theories of Gravity. By applying a conformal transformation, we are able to consider an analogue gravity model, where curvature is encoded in the dielectric and magnetic properties of a medium. In other words, we pass from curved to flat space-times, where instead of the Einstein field equations, the Maxwell equations are solved. Within this geometrical background, the photon geodesics are calculated. Then, given different black hole and wormhole metrics, we apply this method obtaining an excellent agreement with respect to the exact solutions in the original gravity framework by committing angular deviations below $3^\circ$. Finally, we provide the image of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin accretion disk, and the apparent image of a Morris & Thorne-like wormhole within an angular discrepancy below $4^\circ$., Comment: 9 pages, 8 Figures. Abstract

We study the interaction among gravitational and electromagnetic plane waves by means of an analogue electromagnetic model of gravity, where the gravitational properties are encoded in the electromagnetic properties of a material in flat space-time. In this setup, the variations in the metric tensor produced by the gravitational waves are codified as space-time-varying electromagnetic properties. We used an in-housed code based in the finite-difference time domain method to conduct numerical experiments, where we found that, when a monochromatic gravitational plane wave interacts with a narrow-band electromagnetic plane wave, an infinite number of sidebands, equally separated between themselves, are induced by the gravitational wave. Abstract

Even if to mainstream psychologists fear is one of the seven universal emotions, discrete, measurable and with clearly distinct features, in the humanities we consider fear as a widespread concept we associate with more complex prompts than the physiological response to a hazard. This research explores various ways we describe FEAR in Spanish. For this we have made use of digital humanities tools and methods, mainly corpus linguistics and natural language processing, which enable us to explore, present and visualize linguistic elements that define fear in Mexican society. Thus we have explored this emotion (and its family: anxiety, horror, apprehension, dread, panic, terror) by examining the way it is verbalized in an ad hoc corpus covering four genres/domains: chronicle, essay, the press, and social media, specifically, tweets. A set of semantic similarity and ranking metrics were applied to the texts to identify each genre’s characteristics in association with fear. The results show that fear is an emotion that, even if it differs depending on the genre, responds to the prompts of a modern society in which danger is still being represented by illness, violence, power, or an out-group.

Abstract

We present the analysis of archival XMM-Newton observations of the symbiotic stars HM Sge, NQ Gem, and PU Vul. The EPIC-pn spectra hint at the presence of emission lines, which are further confirmed in the 1st order RGS spectra of the three sources. Spectral modeling of the EPIC-pn data disclose unprecedented characteristics, for instance, the best fit to the EPIC-pn spectrum of the $\beta$-type symbiotic star PU Vul reveals the presence of two plasma components. We report the discovery of an extremely soft spectral component in the EPIC-pn spectrum of the $\beta$-type symbiotic star HM Sge which we suggest is produced by periodic mass ejections such as jets. Consequently, we suggest that a simple $\beta$-type classification no longer applies to HM Sge. Finally, the spectrum of the $\beta/\delta$-type symbiotic star NQ Gem can not be fitted by a two-temperature plasma model as performed by previous authors. The model requires extra components to fit the 1.0-4.0 keV energy range. Abstract

Microwave receivers using electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in Rydberg atoms have recently demonstrated improved sensitivities. It is not evident how their state-of-the-art electric field sensitivities compare to those achieved using standard electronic receivers consisting of low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) and mixers. In this paper, we show that conventional room-temperature electronic receivers greatly outperform the best demonstrated sensitivities of room-temperature Rydberg electrometers in standard free-space coupled configurations. However, Rydberg-atom receivers can surpass the sensitivity of conventional receivers if resonant or confining microwave structures are designed to enhance the electric fields sensed by the atoms. For a given microwave resonator, the external (coupling) quality factor must be carefully chosen to minimize their thermal and quantum noise contributions. Abstract

Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic when teachers might have found or created videos for students to watch, flipped classroom methodology has interested many secondary-level chemistry teachers. However, as the secondary coauthor teachers here found, most of the research on the effectiveness of flipped classroom methodology has been performed at the collegiate level. To help fill this gap, six high school teachers from different schools present their research and experience with flipped classroom methodologies in their classes. Taken as a collective, their research, aligning with previous research, suggests that there likely will not be gains on exam scores or course grades for high school students when a classroom is "flipped", but there are other positive reasons that flipped classroom methodology might be a useful tool in the secondary-level chemistry classroom.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, an accurate diagnosis contributes to timely treatment, reducing its adverse consequences. The aim of this research was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the molecular test Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert Ultra) for the diagnosis of pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB compared to Löwenstein-Jensen culture. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of diagnostic accuracy. We included samples from patients who attended a Peruvian laboratory between 2011 and 2022. The index test was the Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra and the reference standard was Löwenstein-Jensen solid culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative likelihood ratios. Results: We evaluated 1023 samples, of which 737 were pulmonary samples, 197 tested positive for the Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra tests; and 151 tested positive for culture. The Xpert (MTB/RIF and Ultra) showed a joint sensitivity and specificity of: 97 % (95%CI: 93–99) and 93 % (95%CI: 91–95) in pulmonary samples, 100 % (95%CI: 29.2–100) and 98.3 % (95%CI: 94.1–99.8) in cerebrospinal fluid, 66.7 % (95%CI: 22.3–95.7) and 96.8 % (95%CI: 91–99.3) in pleural fluid, 100 % (95%CI: 15.8–100) and 94.3 % (95%CI: 80.8–99.3) in urine. For the detection of pulmonary TB, the Xpert MTB/RIF had a sensitivity and specificity of 97.1 % (95%CI: 89.9–99.6) and 95.6 % (95%CI: 92.9–97.5) and the Xpert Ultra of 97 % (95%CI: 88.5–99.6) 89.5 % (95%CI: 84.9–93.1) respectively. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the Xpert MTB/RIF and the Xpert Ultra are tests with high diagnostic performance for the detection of pulmonary TB and adequate specificity in pulmonary, cerebrospinal fluid, pleural, and urine samples. However, the results for other samples were imprecise.

Abstract

Achieving high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency concomitant with long-term durability using low-cost, scalable photo-absorbers is a long-standing challenge. Here we report the design and fabrication of a conductive adhesive-barrier (CAB) that translates >99% of photoelectric power to chemical reactions. The CAB enables halide perovskite-based photoelectrochemical cells with two different architectures that exhibit record STH efficiencies. The first, a co-planar photocathode-photoanode architecture, achieved an STH efficiency of 13.4% and 16.3 h to t60, solely limited by the hygroscopic hole transport layer in the n-i-p device. The second was formed using a monolithic stacked silicon-perovskite tandem, with a peak STH efficiency of 20.8% and 102 h of continuous operation before t60 under AM 1.5G illumination. These advances will lead to efficient, durable, and low-cost solar-driven water-splitting technology with multifunctional barriers.
