Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck gilt als "fondateur de la doctrine de l'évolution" (1809). Sein Transformationskonzept war Basis eines vielgestaltigen Lamarckismus, der – als Gegenentwurf zum ultra-selektionistischen Neo-Darwinismus – v.a. im deutschen Sprachraum reüssierte. Das lamarckistische Prinzip lautet: Die Umwelt hat im Evolutionsgeschehen primär Instruktions-, nicht Selektionsfunktion. Stammesgeschichtlicher Formenwandel beginnt mit gerichteten Entwicklungsänderungen ("arrival of the fittest"), die milieuunabhängig transgenerational rekonstruierbar sind; eine derartige "Vererbung erworbener Eigenschaften" (VEE) verknüpft Onto- und Phylogenese. Als es bis Mitte der 1930er Jahre immer besser gelang, empirische Befunde angeblich umweltabhängiger erblicher Variabilität mendel- und populationsgenetisch zu deuten, erklärten Neo-Darwinisten jegliche VEE für inexistent – womöglich zu Unrecht: Besseres Verstehen schon längst bekannter und die Kenntnis neuer epigenetischer Entwicklungs- und Vererbungssysteme auf verschiedenen Ebenen biologischer Organisation lassen heute lamarckistisches, d.h. entwicklungsorientiertes Evolutionsdenken in neuem Licht erscheinen.

We report the ongoing development of a Rydberg atom-based detector for sensing terahertz radiation. It will be used to characterize the emission properties of a superconducting terahertz emitter and a terahertz quantum-cascade laser.

Additive manufacturing is an emerging technology that enables new product design. However, major inhibitors are long building times and a fixed build direction of the workpieces. In this article, new optimization and path planning methods for multi-axis additive manufacturing are presented going beyond conventional three-axis systems. This includes an adaptation of the building direction and an algorithm for the special case of cylindrical axes. These methods can reduce the production time drastically by avoiding support structures and by using the integration of predefined building blocks to substitute the infill. We present both, the new manufacturing process and the necessary computation methods for optimal process and path planning. Decreasing the building time and the amount of support structures paves the way for new application domains of additive manufacturing in the future.

Der Eurasische Luchs ist nach Braunbar und Wolf der groste autochthone Beutegreifer Europas. Historisch dort fast flachendeckend verbreitet, wurde er bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts bis auf Restbestande in schwer zuganglichen Gebieten vollstandig ausgerottet. Aus zahlreichen, meist erfolglosen Wiederansiedlungsversuchen ab den 1970er Jahren gingen zwar funf kleine Populationen in den Alpen, dem Jura, Bohmerwald, den Vogesen und dem Harz hervor, doch sind diese stark gefahrdet. Fur ihr langfristiges Uberleben ist ein Anschluss an die groseren Populationen insbesondere der Karpaten und des Balkans unerlasslich. Die Perspektiven dafur sind aber skeptisch zu berurteilen: Zwar findet der Luchs inzwischen in vielen Gebieten Mitteleuropas ausreichend gute Lebensbedingungen vor, doch ruft er als Reh- und Schafjager insbesondere bei Jagern und Viehzuchtern oft grundsatzliche Vorbehalte hervor – Wilderei ist deshalb eine Hauptmortalitatsursache. In historical times lynx covered an area nearly all over Europe, but until the beginning of the 20th century this species was totally exterminated apart from small populations in hardly accessible regions in the periphery of Europe. Since 1970 there were several artificial resettlements, most of them were illegal and without any success. Nevertheless few measurements under scientific control resulted to date in five very small populations: in the Alps, the Jura Mountains, the Bohemian Forest, the Voges and the Harz. All of them are highly vulnerable. For a long lasting survival probability connections to larger, indigenous populations mainly in the Carpathian Mountains and the Balkan peninsula are absolutely essential. But according to actual monitoring studies there are only poor perspectives for achieving this objective. In the present even though large areas in Central Europe provide acceptable living conditions for lynx, their survival in the future ist highly uncertain: the central issue is the insuffcient tolerance especially of hunters and stock holders because of the fact, that lynx prey primarily on roe deer and if accessible on sheep.
