RESUMO Objetivo Comparar os valores de ganho do reflexo vestíbulo-ocular (RVO), simetria de ganho entre os canais semicirculares (CSCs) e parâmetros sacádicos em pacientes com diagnóstico nosológico de doença de Méniere (DM) e migrânea vestibular (MV). Método Estudo observacional, descritivo, transversal e retrospectivo, aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, sob parecer: 4.462.519. O estudo foi realizado a partir da análise de prontuários de indivíduos que realizaram o vídeo teste do impulso cefálico (vHIT). Foram incluídos prontuários de 33 pacientes, divididos em dois grupos: G1, 18 pacientes com diagnóstico nosológico de MV, G2, 15 pacientes com diagnóstico de DM. Foram coletadas informações sobre idade, gênero, diagnóstico nosológico, sintomas, comorbidades associadas e resultados do vHIT. Os dados obtidos foram analisados estatisticamente, por meio do Teste t-student e Modelo de regressão linear. Foi adotado o nível de significância de 0,05 (95%). Resultados O sexo prevalente foi o feminino (75,76%), com idade média de 50,18 anos. Observou- se predomínio do ganho do RVO dentro dos padrões de normalidade para o grupo MV (44,44%) e da hipofunção vestibular para o grupo DM (40%). Não houve diferença significativa entre a média de ganho por CSC, dos grupos, nem entre os CSCs direito e esquerdo, dos grupos. Quanto aos parâmetros sacádicos, o G1 apresentou maior percentual de sacadas evidentes e da dispersão sacádica. Conclusão Embora não se tenha encontrado diferença significativa entre o ganho do RVO no vHIT entre os grupos, observou-se predomínio da hipofunção vestibular no grupo DM e de resultados dentro da normalidade no grupo MV.

Introduction: The systematic analysis of cancer markers and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on early detection and therapeutic approach are crucial in today’s medical field. Cancer represents a significant global burden of morbidity and mortality, making early identification of markers a priority for effective disease management. This study aims to explore recent advancements in the identification and characterization of cancer indicators, including genetic, molecular, protein, and imaging biomarkers. Objective: To analyze the latest advances in identifying and characterizing cancer indicators, covering a variety of biomarker types. Additionally, to investigate the role of AI in improving and applying methods for cancer detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, highlighting its significant contributions to enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of these approaches. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted, selecting relevant studies addressing the identification of cancer biomarkers and the use of AI in this context based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The results of this systematic analysis highlight recent advances in identifying and characterizing cancer indicators, as well as the impact of AI on enhancing detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment approaches. Conclusion: This study offers valuable insights into the role of cancer indicators and AI in disease prevention and management, supporting evidence-based clinical practices and promoting the development of more efficient and personalized healthcare approaches.

This narrative review explores texture analysis as a valuable technique in dentomaxillofacial diagnosis, providing an advanced method for quantification and characterization of different image modalities. The traditional imaging techniques rely primarily on visual assessment, which may overlook subtle variations in tissue structure. In contrast, texture analysis uses sophisticated algorithms to extract quantitative information from imaging data, thus offering deeper insights into the spatial distribution and relationships of pixel intensities. This process identifies unique “texture signatures”, serving as markers for accurately characterizing tissue changes or pathological processes. The synergy between texture analysis and radiomics allows radiologists to transcend traditional size-based or semantic descriptors, offering a comprehensive understanding of imaging data. This method enhances diagnostic accuracy, particularly for the assessment of oral and maxillofacial pathologies. The integration of texture analysis with radiomics expands the potential for precise tissue characterization by moving beyond the limitations of human eye evaluations. This article reviews the current trends and methodologies in texture analysis within the field of dentomaxillofacial imaging, highlights its practical applications, and discusses future directions for research and dental clinical practice.

Introdução: As infecções sexualmente transmissíveis (IST) são um grande problema de saúde pública, ao qual os jovens apresentam alta exposição, sendo necessário um maior conhecimento sobre as vulnerabilidades que os acometem. Objetivo: Avaliar o conhecimento sobre as IST e o comportamento sexual de uma população universitária na cidade de Sorocaba/SP. Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo descritivo, de corte transversal, com a coleta de dados realizada por meio de aplicação online de questionário com características qualitativas e quantitativas. Resultados: Quatrocentos e setenta e sete (477) universitários de diferentes áreas de conhecimento foram avaliados. A maioria dos relatos apontou para o início da vida sexual entre 15 e 18 anos. As informações sobre educação sexual foram obtidas principalmente por intermédio dos pais e/ou responsáveis, enquanto pouco conhecimento adicional foi obtido após o ingresso no Ensino Superior. Estudantes de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde alcançaram o maior score no questionário sobre conhecimento e apresentaram chances menores (0,391) de contrair IST, quando comparados aos estudantes de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas ou Engenharias (2,8 e 2,9 mais chances, respectivamente). Conclusão: Os estudantes que demonstraram maior conhecimento sobre as IST e que adquiriram mais informações sobre o tema durante a graduação apresentaram chances menores de se infectar, o que sugere que campanhas destinadas ao público universitário são essenciais para a prevenção e o controle desses patógenos.

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a global respiratory syndrome with high mortality rates. Vaccination is currently the only proven method to prevent the disease, although the role of lab data in assessing efficacy remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess spike-binding and neutralizing antibody levels following full vaccination with Oxford/AstraZeneca (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) or CoronaVac in healthcare workers in southeastern Brazil. ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and CoronaVac induced IgG antibodies against trimeric spike glycoproteins in 99.5% and 80.9% of individuals, respectively. Neutralizing antibodies were produced against two viral strains groups: variants group 1 (Wuhan-Hu-1, Alpha) and variants group 2 (Beta, Gamma) with neutralization rates of 88.3% and 78.2% for ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, and 68.1% and 48.9% for CoronaVac. No associations were found between neutralizing levels and comorbidities, age, or side effects. A positive correlation was observed between IgG antibody concentrations against trimeric spike glycoproteins and neutralizing levels for both vaccines and variants. These findings indicate that both vaccines induced reasonable levels of neutralizing antibodies against variants group 1, but only ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 maintained acceptable levels against a variant strain. The study suggests that evaluating vaccine responses to different pathogen strains can aid in managing healthcare workforce concerns and improve vaccine selection, thereby enhancing overall vaccination strategies.

O aumento da expectativa de vida dos animais torna maior a incidência de neoplasmas. A neoplasia mamária está entre as enfermidades mais ocorrentes na espécie canina, sendo que 35 a 50 % das cadelas os tumores de mama são malignos. A maior importância das neoplasias malignas é a capacidade de gerar metástase, o que aumenta a possibilidade de óbito. O estadiamento clínico faz parte do atendimento oncológico, e visa estipular o prognóstico e o melhor tratamento. Sabendo-se da importância das neoplasias mamárias, objetiva-se realizar uma revisão sobre os principais aspectos desta afecção nas cadelas, bem como, prognóstico, tratamentos e terapias adjuvantes.

RESUMO A Esclerose Múltipla (EM) é uma doença autoimune crônica e inflamatória que afeta o sistema nervoso central (SNC). A disfunção do equilíbrio corporal também é um sintoma comum e pode estar relacionada às lesões neurológicas decorrentes desta doença. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar os achados neurológicos e vestibulares de três casos clínicos com diagnóstico de EM. Dados sobre a avaliação neurológica e do exame de ressonância magnética de crânio foram coletados dos prontuários. Os pacientes responderam a uma entrevista inicial e foram submetidos à avaliação clínica do equilíbrio corporal e ao Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT). Observou-se presença de sintomas vestibulares e alterações em pelo menos uma das provas clínicas do equilíbrio corporal e função cerebelar. No vHIT, obteve-se alterações em testes oculomotores, como presença de nistagmo semi-espontâneo e em parâmetros do teste sacádico, e ganho reduzido em um ou mais canais verticais. Foram verificadas lesões, na ressonância magnética de crânio, em áreas centrais que processam as informações vestibulares, como cerebelo e tronco encefálico. A associação destes achados sugere a presença de disfunção vestibular central, compatível com as lesões detectadas nos exames de imagem.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar se existe associação entre a avaliação clínica do equilíbrio e o ganho do reflexo vestíbulo-ocular com o avanço da idade em pacientes com insuficiência cardíaca. Métodos estudo transversal analítico-descritivo, de caráter observacional, que incluiu pacientes com diagnóstico de insuficiência cardíaca, divididos em dois grupos, por idade (G1, menos de 60 anos e G2, 60 anos ou mais). Os pacientes foram avaliados por meio de anamnese, avaliação cardiológica, avaliação clínica do equilíbrio corporal (triagem da função cerebelar e avaliação do equilíbrio estático e dinâmico) e instrumental da função vestibular (Video Head Impulse Test-vHIT). Os achados obtidos foram descritos e comparados por meio de análise estatística inferencial. Resultados foram avaliados 34 pacientes com média de idade de 55 anos e 9 meses, a maioria homens (71,49%). Não houve associação do ganho do reflexo vestíbulo-ocular, simetria dos canais semicirculares e avaliações do equilíbrio corporal com o avanço da idade. Observaram-se associações entre os resultados da prova de Unterberger-Fukuda com o ganho do reflexo vestíbulo-ocular do canal semicircular lateral direito e posterior esquerdo e com os percentuais de simetria dos canais semicirculares anteriores para os pacientes do Grupo 2. Para os indivíduos do Grupo 1, foi observada associação entre os resultados da prova de Unterberger-Fukuda com os valores de simetria dos canais semicirculares anteriores e do ganho de reflexo vestíbulo-ocular dos canais semicirculares anterior esquerdo e posterior direito. Conclusão não houve associação entre os resultados da avaliação clínica do equilíbrio corporal e dos achados do vHIT com o avanço da idade, em pacientes com insuficiência cardíaca. Entretanto, observou-se diferença entre o ganho do reflexo vestíbulo-ocular específico para alguns canais semicirculares, com maiores índices de alteração na prova de equilíbrio dinâmico, em ambos os grupos. Os resultados dos testes aplicados permitiram caracterizar o predomínio da hipofunção vestibular crônica de origem periférica nos pacientes com insuficiência cardíaca, independentemente da faixa etária.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar a relação entre o risco de queda, o nível de confiança nas atividades que envolvem equilíbrio e a idade com os valores de ganho e simetria dos canais semicirculares (CSCs), por meio do Vídeo Teste do Impulso Cefálico (vHIT), em pacientes com disfunção vestibular periférica. Método estudo transversal, composto por 12 indivíduos submetidos à avaliação funcional por meio da Activities-specific Balance Confidance Scale (ABC Scale) e do Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) e avaliação vestibular com o vHIT. Os resultados foram comparados por meio do Coeficiente de Correlação de Spearman. Resultados observou-se predomínio do gênero feminino (75%), com média de idade de 59 anos e 8 meses. A média de escore no DGI foi de 19,70 pontos e 43,65% na ABC Scale, característico de baixo nível de confiança. Observou-se correlação de grau moderado entre os parâmetros idade com o DGI, DGI e ABC Scale com os valores de ganho e simetria dos CSCs do vHIT. Conclusão Observaram-se relações entre o maior risco de queda em pacientes com hipofunção vestibular e idade avançada e entre o baixo nível de confiança para realizar atividades diárias diante da assimetria de ganho dos CSCs.

Abstract Background Mastitis is one of the major diseases in dairy cattle, as it causes great economic losses to producers due to the reduction of milk production and changes in the quality of the product. The disease is mainly caused by bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus spp., these microorganisms can express various virulence factors, such as biofilms for example. In herds with organic management, producers and technicians use unconventional ways to treat and control the disease, such as homeopathy. However, it is not known if this type of treatment is able to control pathogenic bacteria such as those of the genus Staphylococcus, of relevance to animal and human health. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the production of biofilm in vitro and its genes by Staphylococcus spp. isolated in the milk of cows treated with homeopathy, as well as the persistence of microorganisms in animals. Methods Ninety-nine isolates of Staphylococcus spp. from cows treated and not treated with homeopathy were identified by internal transcribed space-polymerase chain reaction and investigated for the presence of the icaABCD, bap, aap, atlE, and bhp genes and in vitro biofilm production using the adhesion method on polystyrene plates. The enzyme restriction profile was determined by Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis. Clusters of S. aureus and S. epidermidis with three or more isolates had an isolate selected for Multilocus Sequence Typing. Results The frequency of S. aureus isolations was similar in treated and untreated cows, while 71.4% of the coagulase-negative identified were isolated in cows treated with homeopathy. The distribution of the operon ica genes was similar in animals with and without treatment, except for the icaD gene, more frequent in treated cows. Production of biofilm was associated with presence of one or more genes from the icaADBC operon. S. aureus revealed a greater diversity and greater dissemination in cows treated and not treated with homeopathy. Sequence Types ST1, ST5, and ST126 were identified in S. aureus. Conclusions The presence of biofilm-associated genes and the in vitro production of biofilms, combined with the persistence of clonal profiles of Staphylococcus spp. demonstrate other forms of control for bovine mastitis should be researched for organic production herds.

We report genome-wide ancient DNA from 49 individuals forming four parallel time transects in Belize, Brazil, the Central Andes, and the Southern Cone, each dating to at least ∼9,000 years ago. The common ancestral population radiated rapidly from just one of the two early branches that contributed to Native Americans today. We document two previously unappreciated streams of gene flow between North and South America. One affected the Central Andes by ∼4,200 years ago, while the other explains an affinity between the oldest North American genome associated with the Clovis culture and the oldest Central and South Americans from Chile, Brazil, and Belize. However, this was not the primary source for later South Americans, as the other ancient individuals derive from lineages without specific affinity to the Clovis-associated genome, suggesting a population replacement that began at least 9,000 years ago and was followed by substantial population continuity in multiple regions.

A presente revisão tem por objetivo aprimorar os conhecimentos sobre o estresse em gatos, visando a compreensão da natureza felina, seu histórico de domesticação e a influência do estresse em parâmetros comportamentais e exames complementares. Apesar da relação “gato-humano” ser antiga, este é considerado o animal mais recentemente domesticado dentre as demais espécies domésticas. Por não exercerem um papel na sociedade que exigisse ganho ou melhoramento genético, sua seleção artificial foi extremamente sutil, o que permitiu que sua morfofisiologia e comportamento permanecessem semelhantes à dos seus ancestrais selvagens. Os gatos domésticos são animais naturalmente mais susceptíveis ao estresse, e ao serem levados para a consulta veterinária o animal se torna ansioso e assustado por diversos fatores ambientais. Frente a essa situação, são ativados mecanismos de defesa, que se caracterizam por excitação emocional com aumento na produção e liberação de catecolaminas e glicocorticoides, provocando manifestações sistêmicas que cursam com distúrbios fisiológicos e psicológicos no animal. É comumente observado alteração em parâmetros físicos como taquipneia, hipertermia e taquicardia. Os resultados de exames complementares também sofrem alterações, podendo haver irregularidade na concentração das células sanguíneas no hemograma, aumento na dosagem de glicose e pressão arterial sistêmica, o que dificulta um diagnóstico preciso pelo médico veterinário.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to identify which types of skin reactions are associated with slime toys and which of their ingredients are most frequently involved in cases of poisoning. Data source: Between January and July 2021, articles were selected using PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases. The following descriptors were used: (dermatitis OR rash OR eczema OR inflammation) AND slime. Inclusion criteria were articles available in full, in either Portuguese, English, or Spanish, published between January 2000 and July 31, 2021, and articles reporting cases of contact dermatitis or eczema potentially or directly attributed to slime toys. Articles not meeting these criteria and duplicate texts in the databases were excluded. Data synthesis: In total, 65 publications were identified, of which 16 were included in this review. This resulted in a total of 22 children (2 males, 20 females), aged between 4 and 13 years, who were reportedly intoxicated by slime toys, most of these being linked to homemade preparations. Studies reported the occurrence of contact or allergic dermatitis on hands, fingers, nails, forearms, and cheeks. The most allergenic and/or irritant ingredients included liquid detergent and soap. Additionally, patch tests identified positive reactions to methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone, the preservatives used by chemical industries on preparation of glue, soap, detergents, etc. Conclusions: Although slime toys might be important for improving motor development and parental relationships, homemade slime toy recipes include several allergenic and irritant ingredients which might be exposed to vulnerable children and cause intoxications. Therefore, homemade slime toys preparations should be used cautiously and under the supervision of adults.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify the association of self-reported feelings of disability and physical activity with the impact of vestibular symptoms on the quality of life of patients with vestibular dysfunction. Methods: a retrospective, cross-sectional, analytical, documentary study approved by the Research Ethics Committee (evaluation report no. 4.462.519), with 50 selected medical records of patients diagnosed with peripheral vestibular dysfunction, including a survey of their medical history and results of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). Results: the sample’s mean age was 55.38 years, and the majority were females (70%). The DHI revealed a moderate impact of dizziness. Physically active patients perceived less impact of the disease (p-value = 0.0167), while patients with feelings of disability, due to vestibular symptoms, had a greater damage of their quality of life (p-value = 0.0468). Conclusion: physical activity was associated with less damage of dizziness to the quality of life; also, a greater impact on the quality of life was associated with feelings of disability related to vestibular complaints.
