Benchmarks are important tools for tracking the rapid advancements in large language model (LLM) capabilities. However, benchmarks are not keeping pace in difficulty: LLMs now achieve over 90\% accuracy on popular benchmarks like MMLU, limiting informed measurement of state-of-the-art LLM capabilities. In response, we introduce Humanity's Last Exam (HLE), a multi-modal benchmark at the frontier of human knowledge, designed to be the final closed-ended academic benchmark of its kind with broad subject coverage. HLE consists of 3,000 questions across dozens of subjects, including mathematics, humanities, and the natural sciences. HLE is developed globally by subject-matter experts and consists of multiple-choice and short-answer questions suitable for automated grading. Each question has a known solution that is unambiguous and easily verifiable, but cannot be quickly answered via internet retrieval. State-of-the-art LLMs demonstrate low accuracy and calibration on HLE, highlighting a significant gap between current LLM capabilities and the expert human frontier on closed-ended academic questions. In molecular systems, the ultrafast motion of electrons initiates the process of chemical change. Tracking this electronic motion across molecules requires coupling attosecond time resolution to atomic-scale spatial sensitivity. In this work, we employ a pair of attosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to follow electron motion resulting from the sudden removal of an electron from a prototypical aromatic system, para-aminophenol. X-ray absorption enables tracking this motion with atomic-site specificity. Our measurements are compared with state-of-the-art computational modeling, reproducing the observed response across multiple timescales. Sub-femtosecond dynamics are assigned to states undergoing non-radiative decay, while few-femtosecond oscillatory motion is associated with electronic wavepacket motion in stable cation states, that will eventually couple to nuclear motion. Our work provides insight on the ultrafast charge motion preceding and initiating chemical transformations in moderately complex systems, and provides a powerful benchmark for computational models of ultrafast charge motion in matter.

We report tele-seismic waves detection from multiple earthquakes on an operational subsea cable from Iceland to Ireland. This paper addresses the problem of ranking Content Providers for Content Recommendation System. Content Providers are the sources of news and other types of content, such as lifestyle, travel, gardening. We propose a framework that leverages explicit user feedback, such as clicks and reactions, and content-based features, such as writing style and frequency of publishing, to rank Content Providers for a given topic. We also use language models to engineer prompts that help us create a ground truth dataset for the previous unsupervised ranking problem. Using this ground truth, we expand with a self-attention based network to train on Learning to Rank ListWise task. We evaluate our framework using online experiments and show that it can improve the quality, credibility, and diversity of the content recommended to users.

We describe the design and performance of a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer~(MBES) for high-energy electron spectroscopy. Our design features a ${\sim2}$~m long electron drift tube and electrostatic retardation lens, achieving sub-electronvolt (eV) electron kinetic energy resolution for high energy (several hundred eV) electrons with close to 4$\pi$ collection efficiency. A segmented anode electron detector enables the simultaneous collection of photoelectron spectra in high resolution and high collection efficiency modes. This versatile instrument is installed at the TMO endstation at the LCLS x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). In this paper, we demonstrate its high resolution, collection efficiency and spatial selectivity in measurements where it is coupled to an XFEL source. These combined characteristics are designed to enable high-resolution time-resolved measurements using x-ray photoelectron, absorption, and Auger-Meitner spectroscopy. We also describe the pervasive artifact in MBES time-of-flight spectra that arises from a periodic modulation in electron detection efficiency, and present a robust analysis procedure for its removal.

We address the problem of the best uniform approximation of a continuous function on a convex domain. The approximation is by linear combinations of a finite system of functions (not necessarily Chebyshev) under arbitrary linear constraints. By modifying the concept of alternance and of the Remez iterative procedure we present a method, which demonstrates its efficiency in numerical problems. The linear rate of convergence is proved under some favourable assumptions. A special attention is paid to systems of complex exponents, Gaussian functions, lacunar algebraic and trigonometric polynomials. Applications to signal processing, linear ODE, switching dynamical systems, and to Markov-Bernstein type inequalities are considered.

Attosecond photoemission or photoionization delays are a unique probe of the structure and the electronic dynamics of matter. However, spectral congestion and spatial delocalization of valence electron wave functions set fundamental limits to the complexity of systems that can be studied and the information that can be retrieved, respectively. Using attosecond X-ray pulses from LCLS, we demonstrate the key advantages of measuring core-level delays: the photoelectron spectra remain atom-like, the measurements become element specific and the observed scattering dynamics originate from a point-like source. We exploit these unique features to reveal the effects of electronegativity and symmetry on attosecond scattering dynamics by measuring the photoionization delays between N-1s and C-1s core shells of a series of aromatic azabenzene molecules. Remarkably, the delays systematically increase with the number of nitrogen atoms in the molecule and reveal multiple resonances. We identify two previously unknown mechanisms regulating the associated attosecond dynamics, namely the enhanced confinement of the trapped wavefunction with increasing electronegativity of the atoms and the decrease of the coupling strength among the photoemitted partial waves with increasing symmetry. This study demonstrates the unique opportunities opened by measurements of core-level photoionization delays for unravelling attosecond electron dynamics in complex matter.

The enormous demand for seafood products has led to exploitation of marine resources and near-extinction of some species. In particular, overfishing is one the main issues in sustainable marine development. In alignment with the protection of marine resources and sustainable fishing, this study proposes to advance fish classification techniques that support identifying protected fish species using state-of-the-art machine learning. We use a custom modification of the MobileNet model to design a lightweight classifier called M-MobileNet that is capable of running on limited hardware. As part of the study, we compiled a labeled dataset of 37,462 images of fish found in the waters of the Indonesian archipelago. The proposed model is trained on the dataset to classify images of the captured fish into their species and give recommendations on whether they are consumable or not. Our modified MobileNet model uses only 50\% of the top layer parameters with about 42% GTX 860M utility and achieves up to 97% accuracy in fish classification and determining its consumability. Given the limited computing capacity available on many fishing vessels, the proposed model provides a practical solution to on-site fish classification. In addition, synchronized implementation of the proposed model on multiple vessels can supply valuable information about the movement and location of different species of fish.

If a linear switching system with frequent switches is stable, will it be stable under arbitrary switches? In general, the answer is negative. Nevertheless, this question can be answered in an explicit form for any concrete system. This is done by finding the mode-dependent critical lengths of switching intervals after which any enlargement does not influence the stability. The solution is given in terms of the exponential polynomials of least deviation from zero on a segment (``Chebyshev-like'' polynomials). By proving several theoretical results on exponential polynomial approximation we derive an algorithm for finding such polynomials and for computing the critical switching time. The convergence of the algorithm is estimated and numerical results are provided.

Hafnia-based nanostructures and other high-k dielectrics are promising wide-gap materials for developing new opto- and nanoelectronics devices. They possess a unique combination of physical and chemical properties such as insensitivity to electrical and optical degradation, radiation damage stability, a high specific surface area, and an increased concentration of the appropriate active electron-hole centers. The present paper aims to investigate the structural, optical, and luminescent properties of anodized non-stoichiometric $HfO_2$ nanotubes. As-grown amorphous hafnia nanotubes and nanotubes annealed at 700{\deg}C with a monoclinic crystal lattice served as samples. It has been shown that the bandgap $E_g$ for direct allowed transitions amounts to $5.65\pm0.05$ eV for amorphous and $5.51\pm0.05$ eV for monoclinic nanotubes. For the first time, we have studied the features of the intrinsic cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence of the obtained nanotubular $HfO_2$ structures with an atomic deficiency in the anion sublattice at temperatures of 10 and 300 K. A broad emission band with a maximum of 2.3-2.4 eV has been revealed. We have also conducted an analysis of the kinetic dependencies of the observed photoluminescence for synthesized $HfO_2$ samples in the millisecond range at room temperature. It showed that there are several types of optically active capture and emission centers based on vacancy states in the $O_{3f}$ and $O_{4f}$ positions with different coordination numbers and a varied number of localized charge carriers ($V^0$, $V^-$, and $V^{2-}$). The recent high performance of ChatGPT on several standardized academic tests has thrust the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) into the mainstream conversation about the future of education. As deep learning is poised to shift the teaching paradigm, it is essential to have a clear understanding of its effects on the current education system to ensure sustainable development and deployment of AI-driven technologies at schools and universities. This research aims to investigate the potential impact of AI on education through review and analysis of the existing literature across three major axes: applications, advantages, and challenges. Our review focuses on the use of artificial intelligence in collaborative teacher--student learning, intelligent tutoring systems, automated assessment, and personalized learning. We also report on the potential negative aspects, ethical issues, and possible future routes for AI implementation in education. The photon spectrum from free-electron laser (FEL) light sources offers valuable information in time-resolved experiments and machine optimization in the spectral and temporal domains. We have developed a compact single-shot photon spectrometer to diagnose soft X-ray spectra. The spectrometer consists of an array of off-axis Fresnel zone plates (FZP) that act as transmission-imaging gratings, a Ce-YAG scintillator, and a microscope objective to image the scintillation target onto a two-dimensional imaging detector. This spectrometer operates in an energy range which covers absorption edges associated with several atomic constituents carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and neon. The spectrometer's performance is demonstrated at a repetition rate of 120 Hz, but our detection scheme can be easily extended to 200 kHz spectral collection by employing a fast complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) line-scan camera to detect the light from the scintillator. In this work we demonstrate an FPGA-based coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry setup for cable monitoring. Using coherent detection for averaging and narrowband filtering, we significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to traditional intensity-only techniques while also enabling continuous monitoring of phase and polarization. In addition, the probe signal has constant power, avoiding the nonlinear distortions and thereby enabling continuous use without interfering with data channels. We perform a field demonstration over a trans-oceanic cable using loopback configurations present in each repeater, demonstrating measurement SNR exceeding 30 dB for all about 80 repeaters with an averaging window of 1 second. We furthermore compare cable monitoring using coherent processing to today's solutions using power-only measurements. Quadruped robots are currently used in industrial robotics as mechanical aid to automate several routine tasks. However, presently, the usage of such a robot in a domestic setting is still very much a part of the research. This paper discusses the understanding and virtual simulation of such a robot capable of detecting and understanding human emotions, generating its gait, and responding via sounds and expression on a screen. To this end, we use a combination of reinforcement learning and software engineering concepts to simulate a quadruped robot that can understand emotions, navigate through various terrains and detect sound sources, and respond to emotions using audio-visual feedback. This paper aims to establish the framework of simulating a quadruped robot that is emotionally intelligent and can primarily respond to audio-visual stimuli using motor or audio response. The emotion detection from the speech was not as performant as ERANNs or Zeta Policy learning, still managing an accuracy of 63.5%. The video emotion detection system produced results that are almost at par with the state of the art, with an accuracy of 99.66%. Due to its "on-policy" learning process, the PPO algorithm was extremely rapid to learn, allowing the simulated dog to demonstrate a remarkably seamless gait across the different cadences and variations. This enabled the quadruped robot to respond to generated stimuli, allowing us to conclude that it functions as predicted and satisfies the aim of this work.

Optical clock comparison via optical fibre links has been achieved over continental scales, but has not yet been demonstrated intercontinentally. The transfer of ultra-stable optical frequencies over transoceanic distances is a challenging task, as the seafloor cable architecture prevents the use of environmental noise suppression techniques currently employed on land-based metrological links. As a fundamental first step towards devising suitable frequency transfer techniques to enable future clock comparison on a global scale, here we show the free-running frequency stability and phase noise measurements of a transatlantic seafloor optical link between the UK and Canada. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first ever measurements of an intercontinental optical fibre link.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can trigger geomagnetic storms and induce geoelectric currents that degrade the performance of terrestrial power grid operations; in particular, CMEs are known for causing large-scale outages in electrical grids. Submarine internet cables are powered through copper conductors spanning thousands of kilometers and are vulnerable to damage from CMEs, raising the possibility of a large-scale and long-lived internet outage. To better understand the magnitude of these risks, we monitor voltage changes in the cable power supply of four different transoceanic cables during time periods of high solar activity. We find a strong correlation between the strength of the high-frequency geomagnetic field at the landing sites of the systems and the line voltage change. We also uncover that these two quantities exhibit a near-linear power law scaling behavior that allows us to estimate the effects of once-in-a-century CME events. Our findings reveal that long-haul submarine cables, regardless of their length and orientation, will not be damaged during a solar superstorm, even one as large as the 1859 Carrington event., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Feature selection is an important and active field of research in machine learning and data science. Our goal in this paper is to propose a collection of synthetic datasets that can be used as a common reference point for feature selection algorithms. Synthetic datasets allow for precise evaluation of selected features and control of the data parameters for comprehensive assessment. The proposed datasets are based on applications from electronics in order to mimic real life scenarios. To illustrate the utility of the proposed data we employ one of the datasets to test several popular feature selection algorithms. The datasets are made publicly available on GitHub and can be used by researchers to evaluate feature selection algorithms.

The linear switching system is a system of ODE with the time-dependent matrix taking values from a given control matrix set. The system is (asymptotically) stable if all its trajectories tend to zero for every control function. We consider possible mode-dependent restrictions on the lengths of switching intervals which keeps the stability of the system. When the stability of trajectories with short switching intervals implies the stability of all trajectories? To answer this question we introduce the concept of "cut tail points" of linear operators and study them by the convex analysis tools. We reduce the problem to the construction of Chebyshev-type exponential polynomials, for which we derive an algorithm and present the corresponding numerical results.

High throughput and low latency data processing is essential for systems requiring live decision making, control, and machine learning-optimized data reduction. We focus on two distinct use cases for in-flight streaming data processing for a) X-ray pulse reconstruction at SLAC's LCLS-II Free-Electron Laser and b) control diagnostics at the DIII-D tokamak fusion reactor. Both cases exemplify high throughput and low latency control feedback and motivate our focus on machine learning at the edge where data processing and machine learning algorithms can be implemented in field programmable gate array based hardware immediately after the diagnostic sensors. We present our recent work on a data preprocessing chain which requires fast featurization for information encoding. We discuss several options for such algorithms with the primary focus on our discrete cosine and sine transform-based approach adapted for streaming data. The rapid advances in technology over the last decade have significantly altered the nature of engineering knowledge and skills required in the modern industries.
