1. Comparative analysis of 3D-CNN models, GARCH-ANN, and VAR models for determining equity prices

Abstract

Financial models have increasingly become popular in recent times, and the focus of researchers has been to find the perfect model which fits all circumstances; however, this has not been thoroughly achieved, and as a result, many financial models have been created. Artificial Intelligence modelling has increasingly become more popular in the financial space as an answer to the weakness of the advanced mathematical models studied in Economics. This paper introduces three commonly used models and tests them on the S&P500 to give a strong projection as to the future values of the prices. It then introduces various error metrics like the root mean square error (RMSE) to ascertain the viability of the models. The results show that a longer-term forecast indeed has more arduous consequences as there is a veer between the actual and the forecasted readings. The models can produce a strong growth estimate for businesses and policymakers to plan more appropriately in the short term. Overall, the GARCH-LSTM model produced the least RMSE which also shows that complex models tend to perform better than simpler models

8. Uninsured Motorists’ Risk Attitudes and Pedestrian Road Safety: Evidence from Metropolitan Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract

With the increasing prevalence of uninsured vehicles in urban areas, motorists’ behaviours on pedestrian safety are crucial for developing effective road safety strategies. This study investigated the happenings around uninsured motorists’ risk attitudes and pedestrian road safety in metropolitan Lagos, Nigeria. Using the survey approach cum the two-way sampling techniques comprised of purposive and convenience, data were gathered to analyse the behavioural dispositions of uninsured motorists and their implications on pedestrian road safety. The study adopted a structured questionnaire as a research instrument for data collection from a sample population of 209. The data analytical employed was descriptive statistics comprised of simple frequency percentages presented in tabular form and bar chart description. Findings revealed, based on pedestrian opinions, that uninsured motorists display riskier driving behaviours, such speeding and reckless driving pattern; which was found prevalent among commercial uninsured motorists. In addition, insufficient implementation of insurance regulation and socio-economic factors contributed to the proliferation of uninsured vehicles. The study also showcased the descriptive analysis of uninsured motorists’ risk attitudes towards pedestrian road safety. Further finding presented a descriptive analysis of pedestrians’ road safety metrics on Lagos roads. Then, the study accentuates the urgent need for comprehensive policy intervention targeting uninsured motorists, including stricter application of insurance laws, public awareness campaigns, enhanced infrastructure to improve pedestrian safety in urban environment, like metropolitan, Lagos, Nigeria and in similar contexts in other African cities and beyond. Thus, insurance practitioners, especially motor insurance providers, should synergise their efforts to improve the accessibility and affordability of insurance for motorists, particularly, the low-income individuals; by creating flexible payment options, and subsidising insurance premiums. Lastly, local communities should engage with other stakeholders in the transport industry to ensure road safety culture, promoting responsible driving behaviour and encouraging compliance with insurance regulation

9. Computational screening of phytochemicals present in some Nigerian medicinal plants against sickle cell disease

Abstract

Abstract Four hundred Phytochemical (bio-active) compounds having predictive activity for treating Sickle Cell Anemia were screened, using PASS online computational resource. Twenty-six compounds out of the four hundred compounds which showed high probability for treating sickle were further screened for pharmacokinetics profiles (ADMET properties) using SwissAdmet, AdmetSAR 2 and Pro-tox II online resources. Only thirteen compounds that displayed good ADMET properties from the twenty-six were further used for DFT calculations and molecular docking against carbonmonoxy sickle hemoglobin (PDB ID: 5E6E). Molecular docking analysis reinforced by DFT calculations showed that two compounds, phenanthrene-5,6-dione (A9) and 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxychromen-4-one (A13, Luteolin) had the best binding affinity of − 8.3 and − 8.9 kcal/mol, respectively, compared to voxelotor (GBT-440), a drug use in treating sickle cell disease. Molecular dynamic simulations showed that 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxychromen-4-one (A13, Luteolin) is highly stable with the protein than voxelotor.

10. Perinatal Outcome of Obvious Congenital Malformation as seen at the Lagos Univer sity Teaching Hospital, Nigeria

Abstract

Summary: A retrospective review of major congenital malformations in 353 newborns delivered at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital during a 10-year period (1981-1990), has revealed an overall incidence of 15.8 per 1000 total births, while the contribution of such malformations to perinatal mortality was 11.9 per cent. Gastrointestinal, central nervous and musculo-skeletal system malforma tions were the commonest seen with individual incidences of 3.9, 3.5 and 2.1 per 1000 total births, respectively. Unclassified congenital malformations had the highest case fatality while central nervous system malformations constituted the commonest cause of death among the malformed neonates. The pattern and incidence of congenital malformations at the hospital would appear to have remained substantially unchanged in the last three decades.

Abstract

Taro, a vital crop in West Africa, is under attack by a disease called Taro Leaf Blight, which is bad news for the economy and farmer since it severely affects their income. Our study tackles the tough parts of spotting plant diseases, like the need for diverse datasets and better ways to analyze images. We're focusing on making a top-notch dataset just for West Africa and using some of the latest tech in deep learning—like VGG16, ResNet50, InceptionV3, MobileNetV2, DenseNet121, Xception, and the Vision Transformer—to spot the disease. From our research, it turns out, the Vision Transformer is the star player here, nailing a 74% success rate in picking out the disease in images, which is way better than older methods like VGG16 and ResNet50 that scored 56% and 36%. In addition, we're digging into how this can help manage diseases in West African farms, facing current problems head-on and suggesting new ways to make things better, not just for Taro but other crops too. The findings are a win-win for tech and farming, offering solid plans to fight back against this blight and keep crops healthy.

Abstract

Background: Care of the children with mental health disorders is fraught with challenges particularly in developing countries and, where the family is the major source of care. Consequently assessing the impact of these disorders on the family is relevant to providing these children with optimal care. Objective: To assess the impact of childhood mental health disorders on family function and parental burden. Method: A monogamous family that had 3 children diagnosed as having childhood onset schizophrenia using the International Classification of Disease version 10(ICD 10) Classification was studied. Family function was assessed using the Family APGAR Score and the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) Score used in assessing parental burden. Results: The Family APGAR Scores were low (highly dysfunctional family) and the ZBI Scores high (highly burdened) in the family. Areas of serious dysfunction in the family were in adaptation, partnership and growth. In the ZBI Scores feelings about quality and cost of care offered, stress and other negative attributes associated with providing care, inability to meet other parental obligations and uncertainty about the future, were the major contributors to the highly burdensome outcome. Conclusion: The study highlights significant family burden and dysfunction in a family who had three children with schizophrenia. It underscored the need for provision of more comprehensive health and social support services to children with mental health disorders and their families.

14. The Pattern of Paediat ric Solid Tumours in Lagos

Summary : There is a wide variation in the pattern of paediatric solid tumours with differences noted be tween developed and developing countries and also within geographic regions. A de scriptive retrospective study of children under 16 years with solid tumours seen be tween 1988 and 1998 was undertaken to document the pattern in Lagos at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). A total of 176,990 children less than 16 years of age were seen in the outpatient clinics out of which 440 had sold tumours. A total of 187 children had benign tumours, while 253 children had malignant tumours. This gives a prevalence for paediatric solid tumours of 2.5 per 1000 children under 16 years seen at LUTH. Malignant tumours were commoner among boys while benign tumours were commoner among girls 10 years and above. The common benign tumous included fibroadenoma (53.5 percent), neurofibromat (15.0 percent) and lipoma (13.9 percent). The common malignant tumours were retinoblastoma (20.2 percent), nephroblastoma (18.2 percent) and Burkitt's lymphoma (9.5 percent). The general pattern of solid tumours is in keeping with patterns seen in other developing countries, However, there is a clear difference in the pattern of malignant solid tumours from ather developing countries and from an earlier study done in the same centre with the predominance of retinoblastoma and nephroblastoma over lymphomas. Environmen tal and genetic factors are postulated as likely reasons for the difference. The impor tance of Cancer Registration is emphasised.

15. Measurement and conceptualization of male involvement in family planning: a bibliometric analysis of Africa-based studies

Abstract

Abstract Background Male involvement in Family Planning (FP) is an exercise of men’s sexual and reproductive health rights. However, the measurement of male involvement has been highly inconsistent and too discretional in FP studies. As a result, we used bibliometric tools to analyze the existing measures of male involvement in FP and recommend modifications for standard measures. Methods Using developed search terms, we searched for research articles ever published on male involvement in FP from Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases. The search results were filtered for studies that focused on Africa. A total of 152 research articles were selected after the screening, and bibliometric analysis was performed in R. Results Results showed that 54% of the studies measured male involvement through approval for FP, while 46.7% measured it through the attitude of males to FP. About 31% measured male involvement through input in deciding FP method, while others measured it through inputs in the choice of FP service center (13.6%), attendance at FP clinic/service center (17.8%), and monetary provision for FP services/materials (12.4%). About 82.2% of the studies used primary data, though the majority (61.2%) obtained information on male involvement from women alone. Only about one in five studies (19.1%) got responses from males and females, with fewer focusing on males alone. Conclusion Most studies have measured male involvement in FP through expressed or perceived approval for FP. However, these do not sufficiently capture male involvement and do not reflect women’s autonomy. 16. Limiting Factors in Stimulating and Sustaining Interest in Psycho-Productive Skills Acquisition in Secondary School Agricultural Science

Abstract

In the study reported on here we investigated factors impeding the stimulation and sustenance of students' interest in the acquisition of psycho-productive skills in senior secondary school agricultural science. We used the classical design for change experiments or before-after measures as the research design. Two methods of teaching, namely demonstration and conventional teaching were used with the experimental and control groups (87 subjects) from 2 schools in the Ijebu-East Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria. A self-reporting scale exposed the students' perceptions of limiting factors such as seeing agriculture as a dirty job, a school subject meant for never-to-do-well, dull students, and as punishment for erring students. Of the 12 factors listed as stimulating and sustaining students' interest, the subjects identified 8 as limiting ones. The results from the mean, standard deviation and t-test indicate that there was significant difference between the factors identified by the experimental and control groups. The results also reveal that there was a significant difference in the factors identified by male and female subjects. This could have been as a result of gender stereotyping regarding agricultural practices in some parts of the study area. It was suggested, among others, that the agricultural science teacher should make efforts to incorporate innovative teaching approaches like demonstration methods in classroom practice coupled with infusion of practical periods to enhance psycho-productive skills acquisition. The vocational agriculture curriculum should include an approach to easily measure a combination of psycho-productive, affective and cognitive skills rather than mere cognitive skills.

This research investigated the impact of technological innovation on firm performance. The study was conducted among employees of Nigeria Consolidated Breweries in Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun state. A sample size of one hundred and two (102) employees was purposively selected from Nigeria Consolidated Breweries in the study area. Primary data was employed for this study. Descriptive statistics analysis was employed to analyze the demographic factors of respondents. Results of this study revealed that there was significant positive effect of technological innovation on firm performance (R = 0.881, p < 0.005). Also, the findings of this study further revealed that technological learning had significant positive effect on firm performance (β = 0.654, p < 0.005). Based on the results, it was recommended that the management of the firm should adopt technological innovation as an essential ingredient of competitive advantage for new product development.

We examined the effects of endurance training with chronic pre-exercise concentrated Kurozu (black vinegar) supplementation on mitochondrial enzyme activity and energy metabolism in Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice. Mice were divided into a control group, an endurance training group, and an endurance training + concentrated Kurozu supplementation group. Mice were orally supplemented with water or concentrated Kurozu solution (500 mg/kg body weight/day) for 3 weeks. The mice in the training group were subjected to exercise on a treadmill (20–25 m/min × 30 min, five times/week) starting 30 min after the supplementation. The maximal activity of citrate synthase in the plantaris muscle in the endurance training + concentrated Kurozu supplementation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.01). The maximal activity of β-hydroxyacyl coenzyme dehydrogenase (β-HAD) in the soleus muscle in the endurance training + concentrated Kurozu supplementation group was significantly higher than that in the other two groups (p < 0.05 for both). In the final week, significant negative correlation between blood lactate concentration after exercise and soleus β-HAD activity was observed. These findings suggest that endurance training with concentrated Kurozu supplementation increases mitochondrial enzyme activity and might enhance lipid metabolism during exercise.

Abstract Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is strikingly dysregulated in many cancers. Although global APA dysregulation is frequently associated with poor prognosis, the importance of most individual APA events is controversial simply because few have been functionally studied. Here, we address this gap by developing a CRISPR-Cas9-based screen to manipulate endogenous polyadenylation and systematically quantify how APA events contribute to tumor growth in vivo. Our screen reveals individual APA events that control mouse melanoma growth in an immunocompetent host, with concordant associations in clinical human cancer. For example, forced Atg7 3′ UTR lengthening in mouse melanoma suppresses ATG7 protein levels, slows tumor growth, and improves host survival; similarly, in clinical human melanoma, a long ATG7 3′ UTR is associated with significantly prolonged patient survival. Overall, our study provides an easily adaptable means to functionally dissect APA in physiological systems and directly quantifies the contributions of recurrent APA events to tumorigenic phenotypes.

This study assessed lecturers' perceptions of postgraduate students' academic motivation and emotions in South-west, Nigeria. The researchers employed descriptive survey research design for the study. The population of the study comprised all university lecturers in South-west, Nigeria while the target population consisted of all lecturers taking postgraduate studies in Federal Universities across South-west, Nigeria. The study sample consisted of 100 respondents purposively selected from five Federal Universities (University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Federal University of Technology, Akure and Obafemi Awolowo University) in South-west. Lecturers' Perception of Postgraduate Students Academic Motivation and Emotions Questionnaire of 4-point Likert type, developed by the researchers with Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient value of 0.83 was used for data collection. The data collected were analysed using frequency, percentages and multivariate analysis of variance. The findings showed that the perceived academic motivation of postgraduate students was average and emotion towards academic activities was stable. Also, the study showed a non-significant difference in male and female lecturers' perception of postgraduate students' academic motivation and emotion. It was, therefore, recommended that academic activities at the postgraduate level should be such that will raise the motivation level and stabilize the emotion of the students.

Abstract

The importance of slow accumulation of mutation in the nucleic acids of bacteria and the possibility of organismal transcriptional modification to suit their adaptation are key drivers favouring natural selection and subsequently adaptive evolution. This study was aimed at providing insight into factors influencing adaptive extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) resistance evolution. A total of twenty-six (26) extended spectrum beta lactamase-producing Gram-negative bacteria isolated in our previous study were subjected to uniplex and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing prior to mutation discovery analyses, while the maximum likelihood value, transition-transversion ratio, tajimas neutrality test, nucleotide diversity and selection analyses were estimated following standard recommended protocols. Results obtained depict the PCR discriminated ESBL alleles as; TEM (n = 11.5 %), CTX-M (n = 15.4 %), SHV (n = 19.2 %) while the co-occurred ESBL alleles were estimated as CTX-M and TEM (n = 3.85 %), CTX-M and SHV (n = 15.4 %), TEM and SHV (n = 23.1 %), CTX-M, TEM and SHV (n = 11.5 %). The transition, transversion, deletion and insertion distribution pattern were evaluated as; TEM (46, 39,11 and 4 %), SHV (50, 31, 8 and 11 %) and CTX-M (60, 21,12 and 7 %) (p < 0.05) respectively. The maximum likelihood value, transition-transversion ratio, tajimas neutrality test, nucleotide diversity and selection analyses for TEM, SHV and CTX-M were (−8436, 1.18, 5.2, 62 % and 84.9 %,), (−8321, 1.60, 5.4, 68.9 % and 97.8 %) and (−7284, 2.86, 6.0, 55.2 % and 77.2 %) sequentially. Our findings therefore have shown that adaptive ESBL resistance evolution is driven by transition mutation, positive natural selection and ESBL gene flow. It is thus imperative to state that understanding these adaptive resistance driven factors and how they operate is crucial to deciphering the fundamental principles of adaptive evolution that might help circumvent the global challenges of antibiotic resistance.

This study was conducted to determine if it is Malthusian theory that viewed population growth as depressing employment opportunity, or Keynesian theory that supports the view of population growth enhancing employment opportunities that holds in the population and unemployment relationship in Nigeria within the period of 1981 to 2019. Data on age dependency and working–age population ratio were used to measure population growth, with unemployment rate as the explained variable. The datasets were sourced from the World Development Indicator database. The study employed the ARDL approach to cointegration to determine the long-run relationship of the variables. The results of the analysis show a long-run relationship between population and unemployment growth rate in Nigeria. Population growth was shown to be capable of significantly reducing unemployment in the long run thereby upholding the proposition of Keynesian theory of unemployment. However, the effect was shown to be the other way in the short run, thereby supporting the proposition of the Malthusian theory of population. The study therefore posits that the effect of population on unemployment is time variant. It is therefore recommended that the government of Nigeria should improve the quality of her population through education and health in order to be able to reap the gain in the future as population grows. Also, the potentialities in the growing population could be harnessed through increased aggregate demand when the government of Nigeria uses his fiscal stance to enhance the people’s income.

30. Phonemic verbal fluency in non-WEIRD populations: Demographic differences in performance in the Controlled Oral Word Association Test-FAS

This study aimed to investigate whether age, level of education, gender, number of spoken languages, and the self-reported position of language within this multilingual experience predicted performance on the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT-FAS). Using a cross-sectional research design, the phonemic verbal fluency of a sample (n = 156) of healthy adults (ages 18–60 years) with different linguistic and educational backgrounds from a non-WEIRD (western, educated, industrialised, rich and democratic) context was assessed using the COWAT-FAS (including the F, A, S, total correct, repetition, incorrect, and total errors). Pearson’s correlations showed significant negative associations between age and most of the COWAT scores, including the total (r = –0.47; p 0.01) and significant positive associations between years of education and all of the COWAT scores, including the total (r = 0.49; p 0.01). The number of languages spoken was not significantly correlated with any of the COWAT scores, but multilinguals who identified English as a first language performed significantly better than those who identified English as a secondary language for several COWAT scores, including the total (t154 = 3.85; p 0.001; d = 0.79). Age (B = –0.32; p 0.001), years of education (B = 0.35; p 0.001), and language position (B = –0.20; p 0.01) also significantly predicted the COWAT total score (r2 = 0.38; F = 18.34; p 0.001; f2 = 0.61). The implications of these findings for use of the COWAT-FAS in multilingual and non-WEIRD contexts are discussed. Contribution: This article supports the importance of understanding the role demographic variables play in cognitive performance and how they represent a source of bias in cognitive testing, particularly in the COWAT-FAS. It highlights how age, level of education, and the correspondence, or lack thereof, between first language and language of assessment, impacts phonemic fluency tasks. This knowledge may help to manage biases when conducting verbal fluency assessments with multilingual individuals and in non-WEIRD contexts.

This paper presents a workable vapour compression system (VCS) for evaluating the performance of a refrigeration system with an integrated condenser that uses a long-term alternative refrigerant to halocarbon as a heat transfer medium (R600a). India's refrigeration system uses halocarbon refrigerants due to their excellent thermophysical and thermodynamic properties. Greenhouse gas emissions from halocarbon refrigerants and fossil fuel combustion contribute to global warming that engenders climate change and the deterioration of the ecosystem. The halocarbon refrigerant was discontinued based on high global warming potential. The system was investigated under various ambient temperatures of 16, 20, 24, and 28 °C (oC). The performance of the VCS was analyzed using the parameters of coefficient performance, compressor work, and pull-down time (PDT). The experimental result shows that the vapour compression system obtained its best PDT, enhanced coefficient of performance, and energy reduction when the ambient temperature was 20 °C.

Abstract

This study proposes a novel and more efficient quantum algorithm for portfolio optimization using quantum combinatorial optimization (QCO) techniques. A recent construction developed in 2021 has sparked the field of financial portfolio optimization through the Quantum Walk Optimization Algorithm (QWOA). In this study, we investigated the complexity and efficiency of quantum optimization algorithms with a special interest in QWOA. The objective is to minimize investment risk by having a good combination of assets in the portfolio. We also focused on reducing the number of iterations while attaining a high-quality resolution through contraction of the solution space to ease computations. The concept of QWOA was extended by constructing a newly outperforming scheme known as the “Quantum Mix Optimization Algorithm (QMOA).” QMOA algorithm codes were provided for the implementation and simulation of numerical results. In addition, the efficiency of QMOA, which is better than the existing QCO algorithms, was discussed. For instance, the least QWOA number of computations required to execute the initial state equation was p > 2, whereas this value was p ≥ 2 in the proposed QMOA.

Abstract: Objectives: Molecular structures, spectroscopic properties, charge distributions, frontier orbital energies, nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and molecular docking simulations were analyzed to examine the bio-usefulness of a series of (4-fluorophenyl)[5-(4-nitrophenyl)-3-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]methanone derivatives. Methods: The compounds were studied through computational methods. Equilibrium optimization of the compounds was performed at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory, and geometric parameters, frequency vibration, UV–vis spectroscopy and reactivity properties were predicted on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results: The energy gap (ΔEg), electron donating/accepting power (ω−/ω+) and electron density response toward electrophiles/nucleophiles calculated for M1 and M2 revealed the importance of substituent positioning on compound chemical behavior. In addition, ω−/ω+ and ΔEn/ΔEe indicated that M6 is more electrophilic because of the presence of two NO2 groups, which enhanced its NLO properties. The hyperpolarizability (β0) of the compounds ranged from 5.21 × 10−30 to 7.26 × 10−30 esu and was greater than that of urea; thus, M1–M6 were considered possible candidates for NLO applications. Docking simulation was also performed on the studied compounds and targets (PDB ID: 5ADH and 1RO6), and the calculated binding affinity and non-bonding interactions are reported. Conclusion: The calculated ω− and ω+ indicated the electrophilic nature of the compounds; M6, a compound with two NO2 groups, showed enhanced effects. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) analysis indicated that amide and nitro groups on the compounds were centers of electrophilic attacks. The magnitude of the molecular hyperpolarizability suggested that the entire compound had good NLO properties and therefore could be explored as a candidate NLO material. The docking results indicated that these compounds have excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract

We investigated the effect of both electron donating group and e//lectron withdrawing group on biological activity of pyrimidine-based compounds as metalloproteinase-7 inhibitors and predicting a library of drug-like compounds with potent cytotoxicity using in silico approach. The selected compounds were optimized and subjected to both docking as well as absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMET) analyzes. We observed that the addition of electron withdrawing group (–CF3) to the predicted pyrimidine-based compound induced a radical improvement in the hydrogen bond strength with Leu181 and Ala182 in matrix metalloproteinase-7. Also, communal orientation of 2-mercapto-4-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-6-((4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)amino) pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile (PC10) and matrix metalloproteinase-7 showed improved binding tendency with calculated binding affinity value of -10.2 kcal mol−1 than other studied compounds. Our findings may open door for the design and development of library of efficient pyrimidine-based drug-like compounds as potential anti-cancer agents.

Abstract

Schistosomiasis remains one of the severe ailments that affect both man and woman in South Africa. It is caused by blood fluke, and the rate at which it causes death is alarming in some areas of America, Asia as well as in African countries. It is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) with grave impact on social and economic situation of countries with low sanitation awareness. Thus, the search for lasting solution to this menace, has drawn the attention of many global researchers using phytochemicals from Scilla natalensis via in silico approach. The studied compounds were optimized using Spartan 14. Docking study was executed via Pymol, Autodock tool, Auto dock vina and discovery studio. Compound 9 with –8.2 kcal mol–1 and –9.4 kcal mol–1 as binding affinity proved to possess highest ability to inhibit glutathione S-transferase and thioredoxin-glutathione reductase than other compounds. Also, ADMET properties for compound 9 and praziquantel were explored and reported. Our findings may open the door for the design of novel drug-like molecules with better efficiency.

Abstract

Gender equity, particularly in healthcare, has been gaining increasing attention in recent years. The goal is to ensure that everyone has equal access to quality healthcare services irrespective of age, gender, or socio-economic status. However, most countries in sub-Saharan Africa struggle to meet this goal, due to several challenges, including poverty, poor infrastructure, and gender-bias. Using Nigeria as a case-study, it is common knowledge that gender inequality and discrimination is predominant in the northern region of the country. This work sought to gather data to assess the level of healthcare accessibility from a gender-based perspective in northern Nigeria. Data were sourced anonymously from residents in about 500 locations across the northern region of Nigeria, using WhatsApp-based questionnaires, in two phases and two languages - English and Hausa. About 4700 participants took part in the survey and each had to answer 43 questions, split into demographic, socio-economic, wellness check, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in health care services obtained.

Abstract

Acacia nilotica, (Fabaceae), is valued for its medicinal properties. We examine the antiproliferative properties of the aqueous fruit extract of A. nilotica. Aqueous extract from Acacia has been associated with potential anticancer effects in fruits and vegetables through screening, antiproliferative, and molecular docking evaluation. Phytochemical screening reveals the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, and carbohydrates. The extracts showed significant antiproliferative effects at eight concentrations (8–50 mg mL–1) examined in comparison to the standard (methotrexate). When compared to Sorghum bicolor seed radicles treated with methotrexate at 48, 72, and 96 h, 50 mg mL–1 extract significantly inhibited the generation of seed radicals, with potent inhibitions of 87.06, 83.48, and 81.45%. Analysis of molecular docking results showed that [(2R,3S)-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,5-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-chromen-7-yl]3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate (D21), (5R,9R,10R,13S,14S,17S)-17-[(2S,4R)-4-[(2S)-3,3-dimethyloxiran-2-yl]-4-hydroxybutan-2-yl]-4,4,10,13,14-pentamethyl-1,2,5,6,9,11,12,15,16,17-decahydrocyclopenta[a]phenanthren-3-one (D28) and [(2R,3S)-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,7-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-2H-chromen-5-yl] 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate (D29) have strong tendency to inhibit dihydrofolate reductase (1VDR), capase-9 (6J15) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) (6J17) better than methotrexate and azacitidine, known antiproliferative drugs. These findings support the use of A. nilotica in traditional medicine for the treatment of tuberculosis and cancer.

Abstract

The use of medicinal plants as an alternative mean of treating various diseases has drawn the attention of several researchers. The desire to find lasting solutions to epilepsy among humans increases every day. Thus, this work was aimed at investigating the potential capacity of the studied phytochemicals in Alsophila spinulosa against human 4-aminobutyrate-aminotransferase as well as to predict the nonbonding interactions involved in the studied complexes. In this work, ten compounds with biological activities were selected and studied using molecular docking method. The molecules selected obtained from A. spinulosa leaves were optimized and various descriptors that described the anti-4-aminobutyrate-aminotransferase features were obtained. More so, 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-3-(((2S,3R,4R,5R,6S)-3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-methyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl)oxy)-4H-chromen-4-one (compound 9) with highest binding affinity proved to have greater strength to inhibit 4-aminobutyrate-aminotransferase thereby downregulating epilepsy than other studied compounds and the reference drug (clobazam). The ADMET features of both compound 9 and clobazam were explored and reported.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic that is ravaging Nigeria and the world at large. This data article provides a dataset of daily updates of COVID-19 as reported online by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) from February 27, 2020 to September 29, 2020. The data were obtained through web scraping from different sources and it includes some economic variables such as the Nigeria budget for each state in 2020, population estimate, healthcare facilities, and the COVID-19 laboratories in Nigeria. The dataset has been processed using the standard of the FAIR data principle which encourages its findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability and will be relevant to researchers in different fields such as Data Science, Epidemiology, Earth Modelling, and Health Informatics.

Abstract

Non-parametric supervised learning algorithms represent a succinct class of supervised learning algorithms where the learning parameters are highly flexible and whose values are directly dependent on the size of the training data. In this paper, we comparatively study the properties of four nonparametric algorithms, K-Nearest Neighbours (KNNs), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Decision trees and Random forests. The supervised learning task is a regression estimate of the time-lapse in medical insurance reimbursement. Our study is concerned precisely with how well each of the nonparametric regression models fits the training data. We quantify the goodness of fit using the R-squared metric. The results are presented with a focus on the effect of the size of the training data, the feature space dimension and hyperparameter optimization.

Abstract

Abstract Background Post-abortion care (PAC) prevents death and complications caused by unsafe abortion which is widespread in Nigeria. Yet, there is sparse community-based evidence on women’s intention to seek PAC should they have an abortion. This study examined the influence of perceived health facility-related barriers (HFRB) on post-abortion care-seeking intention (PACSI) among women of reproductive ages in Osun state, Nigeria. Methods The study focused on women in a sexual relationship and who were residents of Osun state. A community-based survey was implemented using a multi-stage sampling technique. The calculated sample size (with attrition) was 1200 and data were collected from women aged 15-49 years, using open data kit (ODK). However, 1,065 complete responses were received on the ODK server, indicating an 88.8% response rate. Models were estimated using ordered logistic regression (Ologit) (α0.05) and data analysis was performed using Stata 14.0. Results Mean age of the women was 29.3±7.6 years and 34.01% had the intention to seek PAC in health facilities. Lack of service confidentiality and unavailability of equipment specific to abortion were the two most reported barriers that would prevent women from seeking PAC. The adjusted Ologit model showed that respondents with perceived low HFRB had higher odds (aOR=1.60; CI=1.12-2.11) of seeking PAC in the health facility. Also, women who were employed and skilled were more likely (aOR=1.51; CI=1.13-2.01) while women who had PAC support from spouses/partners had higher odds of healthy PACSI (aOR=2.03; CI=1.48-2.78). Other identified predictors of PAC seeking intention included level of education, employment status, and spousal/partner support. Conclusion Perceived lack of trust in service provision and necessary equipment specific to abortion care had a negative influence on women’s PACSI in Osun state. Reassuring health interventions that focus on improving the public perception of healthcare services and confidence to use the facility will likely improve the patronage of health facility for post-abortion care in Osun sate.

Abstract

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic represents an unprecedented challenge for clinical research. The Pneumococcal Vaccine Schedules (PVS) study is a non-inferiority, interventional trial in which infants resident in 68 geographic clusters are randomised to two different schedules for pneumococcal vaccination. From September 2019 onwards, all infants resident in the study area became eligible for trial enrolment at all Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) clinics in the study area. Surveillance for clinical endpoints is conducted at all 11 health facilities in the study area. PVS is conducted as a collaboration between the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG) at LSHTM and the Gambian Ministry of Health (MoH). The COVID-19 pandemic caused many disruptions to PVS. MRCG instructed interventional studies that participant enrolment be suspended on 26 March 2020, and a public health emergency was declared in The Gambia on 28 March 2020. Enrolment in PVS restarted on 1 July 2020 and was suspended again on 5 August 2020 after The Gambia experienced a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in late July 2020 and restarted again on 1 September 2020. During periods of suspended enrolment of infants at EPI clinics, PVS continued safety surveillance at health facilities, albeit with disruptions. During the periods of suspended enrolment, infants who had been enrolled before 26 March 2020 continued to receive the PCV schedule to which they had been randomly allocated based on their village of residence, whereas all other infants received the standard PCV schedule. Throughout 2020 and 2021, the trial faced numerous technical and operational challenges: disruption to MoH delivery of EPI services and clinical care at health facilities; episodes of staff illness and isolation; disruption of MRCG transport, procurement, communications and human resource management; and also a range of ethical, regulatory, sponsorship, trial monitoring and financial challenges. In April 2021, a formal review concluded that the pandemic had not compromised the scientific validity of PVS and that the trial should continue as per protocol. The continuing challenges that COVID-19 poses to PVS, and other clinical trials will persist for some time.
