We report a large outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in a residential living facility. Measurements of carbon dioxide levels, aerosol particle clearance, and airflow were used to identify and remediate areas with suboptimal ventilation. Light‐absorbing carbonaceous aerosols that dominate atmospheric aerosol warming over India remain poorly characterized. Here, we delve into UV‐visible‐IR spectral aerosol absorption properties at nine PAN‐India COALESCE network sites (Venkataraman et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.1175/bams‐d‐19‐0030.1). Absorption properties were estimated from aerosol‐laden polytetrafluoroethylene filters using a well‐constrained technique incorporating filter‐to‐particle correction factors. The measurements revealed spatiotemporal heterogeneity in spectral intrinsic and extrinsic absorption properties. Absorption analysis at near‐UV wavelengths from carbonaceous aerosols at these regional sites revealed large near‐ultraviolet brown carbon absorption contributions from 21% to 68%—emphasizing the need to include these particles in climate models. Further, satellite‐retrieved column‐integrated absorption was dominated by surface absorption, which opens possibilities of using satellite measurements to model surface‐layer optical properties (limited to specific sites) at a higher spatial resolution. Both the satellite‐modeled and direct in‐situ absorption measurements can aid in validating and constraining climate modeling efforts that suffer from absorption underestimations and high uncertainties in radiative forcing estimates. In developing countries and especially in India, one of the most polluted regions of the world, the extent to which particles can absorb solar energy and warm the atmosphere is not well understood. Here, for the first time, we measure particle absorption simultaneously at nine ground sites across India, in diverse geographical regions with different levels and types of particulate pollution. We find that organic carbon particles exert large absorption at near‐ultraviolet wavelengths, which contain significant solar energy. These light absorbing organic carbon particles, called brown carbon, are emitted in large quantities from biomass burning (e.g., burning crop residue and cooking on wood‐fired stoves). Comparing ground measurements of absorption with satellite‐retrieved measurements that are representative of the entire atmospheric column, we find that near‐surface atmospheric particles can exert significant warming. This study highlights the need to improve climate model simulations of particulate pollution's impact on the climate by incorporating spatiotemporal surface‐level absorption measurements, including absorption by brown carbon particles. Aims Methods Results Conclusion Intubated patients with methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia, fail optimized treatment with intravenous (IV) vancomycin (serum trough 15–20 μg/mL) in 38–79% of cases. Airway blood flow is diminished compared to alveoli and we hypothesized that vancomycin concentrations achieved in airway secretions are suboptimal and nonbactericidal. Targeted therapy by inhalation may overcome this deficit.Airway pharmacokinetics of optimized IV and inhaled vancomycin in infected clinically stable prolonged mechanically ventilated patients were measured. First, IV vancomycin was given until optimized concentrations were achieved (15–20 μg/mL), and, at the same time point, sputum vancomycin concentrations were measured. Then, sputum concentrations were re‐assessed after 4 treatments of inhaled vancomycin (120 mg/2 mL) via a previously characterized nebulizing system that deposited 18 ± 2 mg in the lungs. Vancomycin post‐distribution phase serum peak and trough concentrations were also obtained. Serum albumin was measured to assess binding to vancomycin.Mean serum trough concentration was 18.4 ± 6.5 μg/mL. Sputum concentrations were affected by serum albumin. Only patients with severe hypoalbuminaemia had penetration of drug leading to therapeutic (15.7–17 μg/mL) sputum concentrations. Following inhaled vancomycin, sputum concentrations increased significantly to 199 ± 37.0 μg/mL (P = .002) exceeding minimum inhibitory concentration by 2 orders of magnitude.Despite optimized serum concentrations, patients with albumin near normal had suboptimal concentrations of vancomycin in their sputum. Inhaled therapy may be clinically important for successful treatment of ventilator‐associated methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. This study investigated the impact of sweeteners on the release of heavy metals during the heating and atomization processes in electronic cigarettes. Based on a PG/VG base e-liquid with the addition of 2% and 5% neotame or sucralose, we quantitatively analyzed the impact of sweetener content on the levels of heavy metals such as Ni, Cr, and Fe in the e-liquid and aerosol after heating and atomization. Additionally, the heated e-liquid samples were used to culture SH-SY-5Y and Beas-2B cells, and their cytotoxic effects were assessed using the CCK-8 assay. The results indicated that the e-liquid with 5% sucralose had the highest average levels of heavy metals after heating and atomization, particularly nickel (13.36 ± 2.50 mg/kg in the e-liquid and 12,109 ± 3,229 ng/200 puffs in the aerosol), whereas the e-liquid with neotame had significantly lower average heavy metal content in comparison. Additionally, it was measured that the chloride ion concentration in the e-liquid with 5% sucralose reached 191 mg/kg after heating at 200°C for 1 h, indicating that heating sucralose generated chloride ions, Which might corrode metal parts components leading to heavy metal release. Cytotoxicity tests revealed that the base e-liquid without sweeteners exhibited the highest average cell viability after heating, at 64.80% ± 2.84% in SH-SY-5Y cells and 63.24% ± 0.86% in Beas-2B cells. Conversely, the e-liquid variant with 5% sucralose showed a significant reduction in average cell viability, reducing it to 50.74% ± 0.88% in SH-SY-5Y cells and 53.03% ± 0.76% in Beas-2B cells, highlighting its more pronounced cytotoxic effects compared to other tested e-liquids. In conclusion, sucralose in e-liquids should be limited preferably less than 2%, or replaced with neotame, a safer alternative, to minimize health risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are employed in a range of devices due to their high energy and power density. However, the increased power density of LIBs raises concerns regarding their safety when subjected to external abuse. The thermal behavior is influenced by a number of factors, i.e., the state of charge (SoC), the cell chemistry and the abuse conditions. In this study, three distinct cylindrical Li-ion cells, i.e., lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA), lithium titanate oxide (LTO), and lithium iron phosphate (LFP), were subjected to thermal abuse (heating rate of 5 °C/min) in an air flow reactor, with 100% SoC. Venting and thermal runaway (TR) were recorded in terms of temperature and pressure, while the emitted products (gas, solid, and liquid) were subjected to analysis by FT-IR and ICP-OES. The concentrations of the toxic gases (HF, CO) are significantly in excess of the Immediate Danger to Life or Health Limit (IDLH). Furthermore, it is observed that the solid particles are the result of electrode degradation (metallic nature), whereas the liquid aerosol is derived from the electrolyte solvent. It is therefore evident that in the event of a LIB fire, in order to enhance the safety of the emergency responders, it is necessary to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to minimize exposure to toxic substances, i.e., particles and aerosol. This study investigates the impacts of summer monsoon activity on aerosols over the Indian region. We analyze the variability of aerosols during active and break monsoon phases, as well as strong and weak monsoon years, using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). Our findings show a clear distinction in aerosol distribution between active and break phases. During active phases, the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and aerosol extinction are lower across the Indian region, while break phases are associated with higher AOD and extinction. Furthermore, we observed a significant increase in AOD over Central India during strong monsoon years, compared to weak monsoon years. Utilizing the vertical feature mask (VFM) data from CALIPSO, we identified polluted dust and dusty marine aerosols as the dominant types during both active/break phases and strong/weak monsoon years. Notably, the contributions of these pollutants are significantly higher during break phases compared to during active phases. Our analysis also reveals a shift in the origin of these aerosol masses. Sea spray particles play a key role in transferring momentum, heat, and gas across the atmosphere–ocean interface at high wind speeds and represent an important source of cloud condensation nuclei which affect the genesis, chemistry, and radiative properties of marine clouds. Here, we present direct measurements of sea spray particle fluxes obtained using an eddy covariance technique through the use of a newly developed high temporal resolution optical particle counter. With this instrumentation measurements were made over the coastal ocean during a 5-week field campaign conducted at an observation pier from November to December 2021. Our optical particle counter was capable of measuring size spectra at a rate of 10 Hz in 8 channels covering a range of mean radii between 0.3 and 15. The power spectra of particle number density followed the Kolmogorov −2/3 power law. The shape of the cospectrum of the particle number density flux was basically similar to that of the cospectra of the heat and gas fluxes. The measured sea spray particle fluxes at mean wind speeds of up to 21 m s−1 were dominated by an upward flux, which likely represents aerosol production caused by the bursting of bubbles at the ocean surface. In a nuclear emergency, consequence assessment based on the plant conditions using a simple method is important for a prompt response. Response Technical Manual (RTM-96) is a manual calculation method for prompt dose projection at arbitrary distances by converting pre-calculated doses with the conversion factor based on distance and weather. However, the 'conversion factor' in RTM-96 does not consider accident scenarios with filtered containment venting system (FCVS). Therefore, in this study, we defined the ratio of effective dose between 1 km and an arbitrary distance as the 'Distance Conversion Factor (DCF)' and aimed to clarify the difference between DCFs by accident scenarios, focusing on the presence or absence of FCVS. The results showed that the differences in DCFs for different accident scenarios were minor in the case of no rainfall. In contrast, in the case of rainfall, DCF differed significantly with scenarios with FCVS and those with containment failure. Therefore, the authors propose that DCFs with rainfall should be calculated separately for several representative accident scenarios rather than uniformly for all accident scenarios, as in the conventional method. Aerosols continuously transport trace elements (TEs) across long distances to the ocean, fueling marine primary production and affecting global carbon cycles. Given the multiple sources and complex transport mechanisms, field investigations of aerosol TEs on a global scale are significant for understanding their role in marine biogeochemical cycles. Here, aerosol samples were collected along a 50,000‐km route covering subtropical Northwest Pacific (NWP) marginal seas, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Drake Passage, and South Pacific. Samples were analyzed for the concentrations of Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Tl, and Pb. Aerosol TEs were distributed heterogeneously, with significantly lower concentrations over remote oceans compared to coastal seas. Meanwhile, TE concentrations were generally high in the Indian Ocean, moderate in the Southern Ocean, and low in the South Pacific. Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Pb were widely enriched, primarily originating from anthropogenic sources, while Al, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, and Co were mainly from crustal sources in remote oceans. Moreover, specific sources of TEs were clarified, for example, Cr and Ni were mainly from vehicle emissions. The estimated bulk TE deposition fluxes also varied spatially. For instance, the greatest deposition of Fe occurs in the NWP marginal sea, followed by the Drake Passage, Indian Ocean Sector of Southern Ocean, Pacific Sector of Southern Ocean, and South Pacific. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics of aerosol TEs in the global ocean, providing valuable information for future studies and policy making regarding climate change. We identified TEs from crustal and anthropogenic sources, and further elucidated the specific origins of the anthropogenic elements. Furthermore, the bulk deposition fluxes of 14 TEs and dust as well as the contributions of dry and wet deposition. Human norovirus is transmitted mainly via the faecal-oral route, but norovirus disease outbreaks have been reported in which airborne transmission has been suggested as the only explanation. We used murine norovirus (MNV) as a surrogate for human norovirus to determine the aerosolization of infectious norovirus in an experimental setup. A 3-l air chamber system was used for aerosolization of MNV. Virus in solution (6 log10 TCID50/ml) was introduced into the nebulizer for generating aerosols and a RAW 264.7 cell dish without a lid was placed in the air chamber. Cell culture medium samples were taken from the dishes after the aerosol exposure time of 30 or 90 min, and the dishes were placed in a 37 °C, 5% CO2 incubator and inspected with a light microscope for viral cytopathic effects (CPEs). We determined both the infectious MNV TCID50 titre and used an RT-qPCR assay. During the experiments, virus infectivity remained stable for 30 and 90 min in the MNV solution in the nebulizer. Infectious MNV TCID50 values/ml of 2.89 ± 0.29 and 3.20 ± 0.49 log10 were measured in the chamber in RAW 264.7 cell dish media after the 30-min and 90-min exposure, respectively. The MNV RNA loads were 6.20 ± 0.24 and 6.93 ± 1.02 log10 genome copies/ml, respectively. Later, a typical MNV CPE appeared in the aerosol-exposed RAW cell dishes. We demonstrated that MNV was aerosolized and that it remained infectious in the experimental setup used. Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are battery-powered gadgets that heat liquid to produce an aerosol. Nicotine is a primary ingredient in some e-liquids; however, due to a lack of quality control regulations, the nicotine may become tainted, or the measured and labelled values may not correspond. To avoid such issues, it is essential to identify the components that contribute to erroneous nicotine quantification. Herein, the differences between free-base nicotine and nicotine salts are discussed, highlighting the lower volatility of nicotine salts and their longer persistence in the body. Discrepancies were noted in the concentration of nicotine salts in some e-liquid samples, with labelled and measured values of 48 and 68.8 mg/mL, respectively, in one sample, and 24 and 33.1 mg/mL, respectively, in another. Inconsistencies were also observed in e-liquids labelled as nicotine-free: one sample had a nicotine concentration of 21.80 mg/cartridge, while another had a concentration of 23.91 mg/mL. The review also covers differences in the potency, flavour, and storage of nicotine under various conditions. Additionally, the literature suggests that the components in ECs are separated into the liquid and vapour phases; thus, phase selection should be considered to ensure optimal experimental outcomes. For instance, the vapour phase comprises the greatest quantities of volatile organic compounds, even though nicotine has been detected in all phases. Finally, the role of ECs in smoking cessation is discussed. The reviewed findings underscore the need for further research on e-liquids, particularly regarding their long-term clinical effects. A combination of magnetic polarity and rock magnetic analysis on the well‐documented section of the Um Sohryngkew River (USR) in the south Shillong Plateau, NE India, produced a sharp reversal marking the C29r‐C29n geomagnetic polarity transition at approximately 65.688 Ma. The rock magnetic studies indicate ferrimagnetic dominant mineralogy with abundance of SSD grains, with an anomalous peak in susceptibility coinciding with Ir‐rich limonitic layer. The magnetic reversal occurs precisely 61 m above the Ir‐rich distinct in situ limonitic layer, indicating that the C29r‐C29n geomagnetic reversal post‐dates the widely accepted Ir‐anomaly based K‐Pg boundary by approximately 355 Ka. Furthermore, the rock magnetic studies indicate its frequency dependence coinciding with the Ir‐rich limonitic layer suggesting a possible dust/aerosol source, while akaganéite is reported from the interval approximately 1 m below peak susceptibility, indicating signature of Deccan volcanism. This study infers the completeness of the USR section with a high rate of sedimentation of approximately 17 cm/ka among the marine K‐Pg boundary sections in the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, in China, during the period of transition between spring and summer, the combination of sandstorms and ozone (O3) pollution has posed a significant challenge to the strategy of coordinated control of fine particulate matters (PM2.5) and O3. On the one hand, the dust invasion brings many primary aerosols and causes a large range of transboundary transport. On the other hand, the high concentration of aerosol causes a severe disturbance to the distribution of O3. Traditionally, high-resolution assessments of the spatial distribution of aerosols and O3 can be carried out using LiDAR technology. However, the negligence of the influence of aerosols in the process of O3 retrieval in traditional differential absorption lidar (DIAL) leads to an error in the accuracy of ozone concentration. Especially when dust transit occurs, the errors become bigger. In this study, a self-customized four-wavelength differential-absorption LiDAR system was used to synchronously obtain the accurate vertical distributions of ozone and high-concentration aerosol. The wavelength index of concentrated aerosol was inverted and applied to the differential equation framework for O3 calculation. This novel approach to retrieving the vertical profile of O3 was proposed and verified by applying it to a dust pollution event that occurred from April to May 2021 in Anyang City Henan Province, which is located in Northern China. It was found that the extinction coefficient of aerosol reached 2.5 km−1 during the dust period, and O3 was mainly distributed between 500 m and 1500 m. The O3 error exceeded over 10% arising from the high-concentration aerosol below 1.5 km during the dust storm event. By employing the inversion algorithm while considering the aerosol effects, the ozone concentration error was improved by over 10% compared with the error recorded without considering the aerosol influence especially in dust events. Through this study, it was found that the algorithm could effectively realize the synchronous and accurate inversion of high-concentration aerosols and O3 and can provide key technical support for air pollution control in China in the future. Exposure assessments to metalworking fluids (MWF) is difficult considering the complex nature of MWF. This study describes a comprehensive exposure assessment to straight and water-based MWFs among workers from 20 workshops. Metal and organic carbon (OC) content in new and used MWF were determined. Full-shift air samples of inhalable particulate and gaseous fraction were collected and analysed gravimetrically and for metals, OC, and aldehydes. Exposure determinants were ascertained through observations and interviews with workers. Determinants associated with personal inhalable particulate and gaseous fractions were systematically identified using mixed models. Similar inhalable particle exposure was observed for straight and water-based MWFs (64–386 µg/m3). The gaseous fraction was the most important contributor to the total mass fraction for both straight (322–2362 µg/m3) and water-based MWFs (101–699 µg/m3). The aerosolized particles exhibited low metal content irrespective of the MWF type; however, notable concentrations were observed in the sumps potentially reaching hazardous concentrations. Job activity clusters were important determinants for both exposure to particulate and gaseous fractions from straight MWF. Current machine enclosures remain an efficient determinant to reduce particulate MWF but were inefficient for the gaseous fraction. Properly managed water-based MWF meaning no recycling and no contamination from hydraulic fluids minimizes gaseous exposure. Workshop temperature also influenced the mass fractions. High pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) have caused major epizootics in recent years, with devastating consequences for poultry and wildlife worldwide. Domestic and wild ducks can be highly susceptible to HPAIVs, and infection leads to efficient viral replication and massive shedding (i.e., high titres for an extended time), contributing to widespread viral dissemination. Importantly, ducks are known to shed high amounts of virus in the earliest phase of infection, but the dynamics and impact of environmental contamination on the epidemiology of HPAIV outbreaks are poorly understood. In this study, we monitored mule ducks experimentally infected with two H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4b goose/Guangdong HPAIVs sampled in France in 2016–2017 and 2020–2021 epizootics. We investigated viral shedding dynamics in the oropharynx, cloaca, conjunctiva, and feathers; bird-to-bird viral transmission; and the role of the environment in viral spread and as a source of samples for early detection and surveillance. Our findings showed that viral shedding started before the onset of clinical signs, i.e., as early as 1 day post-inoculation (dpi) or post-contact exposure, peaked at 4 dpi, and lasted for up to 14 dpi. The detection of viral RNA in aerosols, dust, and water samples mirrored viral shedding dynamics, and viral isolation from these environmental samples was successful throughout the experiment. Our results confirm that mule ducks can shed high HPAIV titres through the four excretion routes tested (oropharyngeal, cloacal, conjunctival, and feather) while being asymptomatic and that environmental sampling could be a non-invasive tool for early viral RNA detection in HPAIV-infected farms. In this contribution, we report the study of nuclear resonance magnetic spectroscopy techniques (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and 2D-NMR) efficiency in the characterisation of the functional composition of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) from atmospheric aerosols. The chosen site was our scientific and technical center of research (CRAPC) situated in Algerian Bou-Ismail city. where the concentrations of PM10 were found to be between 15.66 and 142.19 µg.m−3. As results, 1H-NMR analysis showed the coexistence of biological material and emissions from urban and biomass burning. The dominant source was identified by quantitative integration of each 1H NMR spectral region. By using the HSQC technique, many peaks are revealed in biogenic samples including biomass burning. On the other hand, the identification of the source of various organic compounds and their functional composition is possible through specific NMR spectra, which can also be used to adjust the surrounding organic aerosol sources. Aerosol–cloud interactions play a crucial role in shaping Earth's climate and hydrological cycle. Observing these interactions with high precision and accuracy is of the utmost importance for improving climate models and predicting Earth's climate. Over the past few decades, lidar techniques have emerged as powerful tools for investigating aerosol–cloud interactions due to their ability to provide detailed vertical profiles of aerosol particles and clouds with high spatial and temporal resolutions. This review paper provides an overview of recent advancements in the study of ACI using lidar techniques. The paper begins with a description of the different cloud microphysical processes that are affected by the presence of aerosol, and with an outline of lidar remote sensing application in characterizing aerosol particles and clouds. The subsequent sections delve into the key findings and insights gained from lidar-based studies of aerosol–cloud interactions. This includes investigations into the role of aerosol particles in cloud formation, evolution, and microphysical properties. Finally, the review concludes with an outlook on future research. Space-based atmospheric backscatter lidars provide critical information about the vertical distribution of clouds and aerosols, thereby improving our understanding of the climate system. They are additionally useful for detecting hazards to aviation and human health, such as volcanic plumes and man-made pollution events. The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP, 2006–2023), Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS, 2015–2017), and Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS 2018–present) are three such lidars that operated within the past 20 years. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for these lidars is significantly lower in daytime data compared with nighttime data due to the solar background signal increasing the detector response noise. Averaging horizontally across profiles has been the standard way to increase SNR, but this comes at the expense of resolution. Modern, deep learning-based denoising algorithms can be applied to improve the SNR without coarsening resolution. This paper describes how one such model architecture, Dense Dense U-Net (DDUNet), was trained to denoise CATS 1064 nm raw signal data (photon counts) using artificially noised nighttime data. Simulated CATS daytime 1064 nm data were then created to assess the model's performance. The denoised simulated data increased the daytime SNR by a factor of 2.5 (on average) and decreased minimum detectable backscatter (MDB) to ~ 7.3 × 10 − 4 km−1sr−1, which is lower than the CALIOP 1064 nm night MDB value of 8.6 × 10 − 4 km−1sr−1. Layer detection was performed on simulated 2 km horizontal resolution denoised and 60 km averaged data. Despite the finer resolution input, the denoised layers had more true positives, fewer false positives, and an overall Jaccard Index of 0.54 versus 0.44 when compared to the layers detected on averaged data. Layer detection was also performed on a full month of denoised daytime CATS data (Aug. 2015) to detect layers for comparison with CATS standard Level 2 (L2) product layers. Because of the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes, monitoring the e-cigarette market has become important for national health authorities to guarantee safety and quality. In the EU, the Tobacco Products Directive requires emission studies for e-cigarette products. The absence of industry guidelines for studying these emissions and the lack of proper validation in the literature led us to develop and validate a method using the total error approach for the determination of nicotine in e-cigarette aerosols. A commercial vaping device was used to generate aerosols, which were then collected on Cambridge filter pads and measured for nicotine concentration by UHPLC-DAD after extraction. The method was successfully validated by generating accuracy profiles, which show that the β-expectation tolerance intervals remained below the acceptance limits of ±20%. Within-run repeatability and intermediate precision were considered acceptable since the highest RSD value obtained was below 5%. The method was applied to 15 commercial e-liquids. A complete validation of a method for the analysis of e-cigarette emissions is presented, including several parameters that impact the accuracy and reproducibility. Similar systematic approaches for method development and validation could be used for other e-cigarette emission analysis methods to ensure the reliability of the measurements. This work analyses 10 years (from 2009 to 2018) of long‐range Saharan dust advections (SDAs) and their correlation with the precipitation and radiative budget over the Central Mediterranean region. The identification of the SDAs is based on back‐trajectories (BTs) of air mass and complementary measurements of the dust deposited at the site of Monte Martano in Central Italy. The associated synoptic circulation weather types (CWT), precipitation and radiation variables have been estimated by using ERA5 and CAMS reanalysis, satellite data and raingauge observations. It is found that the 50% of all SDAs occur under a CWT characterized by an upper level trough over the Western Mediterranean and a high‐pressure system over the Eastern Mediterranean. Strong southerly winds, large vertical integral of water vapour transport and a positive anomaly of 2 m temperature are associated with dust uplift and transport. The effect of dust on rainfall intensity puts forward the important modulation of the aerosol effects on the radiative budget with a latitudinal dependence. On dusty days, intense rainfall increases over the northern Central Mediterranean and light rainfall is suppressed in the southern Central Mediterranean, pointing out a relevant correlation between dust and the intensification of extreme events. Other than affecting rainfall intensity, the stronger surface heating over the southern Central Mediterranean, which is correlated to a higher dust optical depth, causes a local maximum of sea surface temperature (SST) and near‐surface temperature anomaly. The availability of dissolved iron (Fe) limits primary production over some regions of the surface ocean, especially in regions such as the subarctic North Pacific. In this work, we use Fe stable isotope ratios (δ56Fe) in bulk and size-fractionated marine aerosol particles and dissolved Fe of surface seawater in the subarctic North Pacific on Japanese GEOTRACES cruise GP02 (Summer 2017) as a tracer to clarify the relative contribution of combustion and natural Fe in both marine aerosol particles and surface seawater. The bulk aerosols collected in the coastal regions of both East Asia and western North Pacific have total δ56Fe values that are as low as −0.5 ‰ when compared to crustal (+0.1 ‰), with both the water-soluble phase and the fine particles even more fractionated (as low as −1.9 and −2.8 ‰, respectively). The negative correlation between the aerosol δ56Fe signatures and the enrichment factors of Fe and other elements dominated by anthropogenic sources (e.g., lead and cadmium) in these coastal regions indicates the presence of Fe emitted from high-temperature combustion sources, such as coal combustion and metal smelting. In these regions, combustion Fe accounts for 4–13 and 13–45 % of the total and water-soluble aerosol Fe, respectively. The results demonstrate that soluble aerosol Fe sourced from combustion Fe can be equivalent to that sourced from natural dust Fe in these coastal regions. By contrast, the aerosol particles in pelagic regions were near crustal δ56Fe in all particle size fractions, indicating the dominance of natural Fe and little to no combustion Fe. The relationships among the fractional Fe solubility, major ion concentration, Fe species, and δ56Fe indicate that the presence of combustion Fe is the dominant reason for the solubility increase in the coastal regions and that the atmospheric processing of mineral dust during transport is more important in the pelagic regions. The dissolved Fe of the surface seawater at 10 m depth had a consistently higher δ56Fe by up to +1.5 ‰ than that of the simultaneously collected water-soluble aerosol Fe. The pattern of the elevated δ56Fe in the surface seawater corresponds to decreasing Fe concentrations and can be approximated by Rayleigh fractionation; we attribute these elevated surface δ56Fe values to the effect of biological uptake. New Fe fluxes from both the atmosphere and deeper depths are limited at least in summer compared with the biological uptake in the open ocean of the subarctic North Pacific. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the radiation budget and its temporal variability over Poland. The data analysis is based on the MERRA-2 reanalysis for the years 1980–2020. During the last four decades, the enhancement of climate warming has been observed, which coincides with the changes in the radiation budget. Positive and statistically significant trends at the top of the atmosphere (TOA; 0.7 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) and on the Earth's surface (1.5 ± 0.2 W/m2/10 year) radiation budget (net downward flux) are mainly a consequence of changes in the amount of aerosol and greenhouse gases (GHG). According to MERRA-2, the AOD during this period decreased by − 0.19 (at 550 nm), which is 87% of the long-term (1980–2021) mean value (0.22). The reduction of AOD is due mainly to the decline of non-absorbing sulfate particles, which leads to a reduction of single-scattering albedo (SSA) by − 0.008 per decade and Angstrom exponent (AE) by − 0.06 per decade (both trends statistically significant). On the other hand, the GHG concentration increased by 4.9%/10 year and 3%/10 year, respectively, for CO2 and CH4. The total column of water vapor increased (1.3%/10 year), while ozone decreased (− 1%/10 year). Despite the fact that cloud cover and cloud optical depth (COD) decreased (− 1.8%/10 year and − 1.0%/10 year), the impact of cloud on temporal variability radiation budget is small. It can be explained by nearly compensated shortwave (SW) cooling and longwave (LW) heating effects. During the analysis period, near-surface air temperature increased by 2.0 °C. The estimated increase in SW net surface radiation (7.9 W/m2) leads to climate warming by 0.8 °C, which is a consequence mainly of the reduction of aerosol (0.4 °C) and cloud cover (0.2 °C). The impact of the change of SW radiation on air temperature is more pronounced during the warm season, while during the cold, air temperature change is controlled mainly by the variability of air mass advection. Yellow fever (YF), caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV), continually spreads and causes epidemics worldwide, posing a great threat to human health. The live-attenuated YF 17D vaccine (YF-17D) has been licensed for preventing YFV infection and administrated via the intramuscular (i.m.) route. In this study, we sought to determine the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of aerosolized YF-17D via the intratracheal (i.t.) route in mice. YF-17D stocks in liquids were successfully aerosolized into particles of 6 μm. Further in vitro phenotype results showed the aerosolization process did not abolish the infectivity of YF-17D. Meanwhile, a single i.t. immunization with aerosolized YF-17D induced robust humoral and cellular immune responses in A129 mice, which is comparable to that received i.p. immunization. Notably, the aerosolized YF-17D also triggered specific secretory IgA (SIgA) production in bronchoalveolar lavage. Additionally, all immunized animals survived a lethal dose of YFV challenge in mice. A study was conducted to measure aerosol particles emitted from laboratory coats (lab coats) under vibration, comparing them with a suit and a shirt. This study focused on particles ranging from 0.3 μm to >10 μm. Experimental results showed that lab coat vibration increased particles >5 μm while reducing submicron particles. The lab coat (old and used) exhibited greater particle concentration variations under vibration compared to those using the new lab coat or the shirt. Contrastingly, the suit under vibration did not significantly affect particle concentrations. These findings highlight the impact of lab coat vibration on aerosol particle concentrations in the surrounding air, which is important for work environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This study aims to determine the presence of norovirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and bocavirus in air samples from a tertiary care hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Air samples were collected in water using the BioSampler and concentrated using speedVac centrifugation. Based on RT-qPCR, norovirus RNA and SARS-CoV-2 RNA were detected in 13/60 (21.7%) and 3/60 (5.0%) of samples, respectively. One air sample had a weak positivity for both norovirus and SARS-CoV-2 RNAs. Detection rate of norovirus genogroup (G) II (13.3%) was higher than norovirus GI (6.7%). One air sample (1.7%) tested positive for GI and GII. The norovirus GI RNA concentration was 6.0 × 102 genome copies/m3. The norovirus GII RNA concentrations ranged from 3.4 × 101 to 5.0 × 103 genome copies/m3. Based on RT-nested PCR, norovirus GII was detected in two (3.3%) samples. All samples tested negative for GI RNA and bocavirus DNA. By phylogenetic analysis, GII.17, which is closely related to the outbreak Kawasaki308/JPN/2015 strain, was found in the RT-nested PCR-positive samples. This study highlights the potential of aerosols for norovirus and SARS-CoV-2 transmission and probably cause gastrointestinal and respiratory illnesses, respectively.

Abstract Exposure assessments to metalworking fluids (MWF) is difficult considering the complex nature of MWF. This study describes a comprehensive exposure assessment to straight and water-based MWFs among workers from 20 workshops. Metal and organic carbon (OC) content in new and used MWF were determined. Full-shift air samples of inhalable particulate and gaseous fraction were collected and analysed gravimetrically and for metals, OC, and aldehydes. Exposure determinants were ascertained through observations and interviews with workers. Determinants associated with personal inhalable particulate and gaseous fractions were systematically identified using mixed models. Similar inhalable particle exposure was observed for straight and water-based MWFs (64–386 µg/m3). The gaseous fraction was the most important contributor to the total mass fraction for both straight (322–2362 µg/m3) and water-based MWFs (101–699 µg/m3). The aerosolized particles exhibited low metal content irrespective of the MWF type; however, notable concentrations were observed in the sumps potentially reaching hazardous concentrations. Job activity clusters were important determinants for both exposure to particulate and gaseous fractions from straight MWF. Current machine enclosures remain an efficient determinant to reduce particulate MWF but were inefficient for the gaseous fraction. Properly managed water-based MWF meaning no recycling and no contamination from hydraulic fluids minimizes gaseous exposure. Workshop temperature also influenced the mass fractions. These findings suggest that exposures may be improved with control measures that reduce the gaseous fraction and proper management of MWF.

Abstract High pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) have caused major epizootics in recent years, with devastating consequences for poultry and wildlife worldwide. Domestic and wild ducks can be highly susceptible to HPAIVs, and infection leads to efficient viral replication and massive shedding (i.e., high titres for an extended time), contributing to widespread viral dissemination. Importantly, ducks are known to shed high amounts of virus in the earliest phase of infection, but the dynamics and impact of environmental contamination on the epidemiology of HPAIV outbreaks are poorly understood. In this study, we monitored mule ducks experimentally infected with two H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4b goose/Guangdong HPAIVs sampled in France in 2016–2017 and 2020–2021 epizootics. We investigated viral shedding dynamics in the oropharynx, cloaca, conjunctiva, and feathers; bird-to-bird viral transmission; and the role of the environment in viral spread and as a source of samples for early detection and surveillance. Our findings showed that viral shedding started before the onset of clinical signs, i.e., as early as 1 day post-inoculation (dpi) or post-contact exposure, peaked at 4 dpi, and lasted for up to 14 dpi. The detection of viral RNA in aerosols, dust, and water samples mirrored viral shedding dynamics, and viral isolation from these environmental samples was successful throughout the experiment. Our results confirm that mule ducks can shed high HPAIV titres through the four excretion routes tested (oropharyngeal, cloacal, conjunctival, and feather) while being asymptomatic and that environmental sampling could be a non-invasive tool for early viral RNA detection in HPAIV-infected farms.

In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in annual area burned in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. This rise in fire activity has prompted the need to understand how historical forest management practices affect fuel composition and emissions. Here we examined the total carbon (TC) concentration and radiocarbon abundance (Δ14C) of particulate matter (PM) emitted by the KNP Complex Fire, which occurred during California's 2021 wildfire season and affected several groves of giant sequoia trees in the southern Sierra Nevada. During a 26 h sampling period, we measured concentrations of fine airborne PM (PM2.5), as well as dry air mole fractions of carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4), using a ground-based mobile laboratory. We also collected filter samples of PM2.5 for analysis of TC concentration and Δ14C. High correlation among PM2.5, CO, and CH4 time series confirmed that our PM2.5 measurements captured variability in wildfire emissions. Using a Keeling plot approach, we determined that the mean Δ14C of PM2.5 was 111.6 ± 7.7‰ (n = 12), which was considerably enriched relative to atmospheric carbon dioxide in the northern hemisphere in 2021 (-3.2 ± 1.4‰). Combining these Δ14C data with a steady-state one-box ecosystem model, we estimated that the mean age of fuels combusted in the KNP Complex Fire was 40 years, with a range of 29-57 years. These results provide evidence for emissions originating from woody biomass, larger-diameter fine fuels, and coarse woody debris that have accumulated over multiple decades. This is consistent with independent field observations that indicate high fire intensity contributed to widespread giant sequoia mortality. With the expanded use of prescribed fires planned over the next decade in California to mitigate wildfire impacts, our measurement approach has the potential to provide regionally-integrated estimates of the effectiveness of fuel treatment programs.

ABSTRACTThe Medium Resolution Spectral Image (MERSI) is a MODIS-like sensor aboard Fengyun-3 satellite. The first version of MERSI aerosol algorithm has been developed based on MODIS dark target (DT) algorithm, with modified models for estimating surface reflectance and an adjusted inland water masking method to release haze aerosols. This study applies MERSI DT algorithm to the global observations from the upgraded MERSI sensor (MERSI-II) on Fengyun-3D. And then, the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) results from the year of 2019–2020 are validated against the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data. In addition, analyses of the spatial distribution and error characteristics of MODIS and MERSI-II retrievals are presented. The overall validation demonstrates that MERSI-II retrievals perform well globally, with a correlation coefficient of 0.877 and 67.1% of matchups within the Expected Error envelope of ± (0.05 + 0.2τ), which are close to the statistic metrics of MODIS products. In addition, MERSI-II and MODIS AODs exhibit similar error trends and error dependence. Moreover, the similar global distribution characteristics of the two AODs are revealed in the retrieval performance at site and regional scales, as well as in the analysis of monthly averages. These findings indicate the success of the ported MERSI algorithm.

The fractionation of airborne particles based on multiple characteristics is becoming increasingly significant in various industrial and research sectors, including mining and recycling. Recent developments aim to characterize and fractionate particles based on multiple properties simultaneously. This study investigates the fractionation of a technical aerosol composed of a mixture of micron-sized copper and silicon particles by size and material composition using a classifying aerodynamic lens (CAL) setup. Particle size distribution and material composition are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) for samples collected from the feed stream (upstream of CAL) and product stream (downstream of CAL) at varying operational pressures. The experimental findings generally agree with the predictions of an analytical fractionation model but also point to the importance of particle shape as a third fractionation property. Moreover, the results suggest that material-based fractionation is efficient at low operational pressures, even when the aerodynamic properties of the particle species are similar. This finding could have significant implications for industries where precise particle fractionation is crucial.

In severe reactor accidents, the phenomenon of aerosols being captured and retained in the liquid as they follow the gas through the liquid phase often occurs during the discharge process of the suppression pool. It is one of the important thermal-hydraulic phenomena that affect the migration and release of radioactive source terms. Understanding the scrubbing characteristics of aerosols under this condition is of great significance for the radioactive assessment after severe accidents. The paper conducted experimental research on the scrubbing efficiency of aerosol under submerged jet conditions, exploring the influence of parameters such as aerosol diameter, liquid pool temperature, submergence, and injection pressure on the scrubbing efficiency of aerosol. When gas is injected into the liquid phase through a rupture or nozzle in the form of a jet, the entrained droplets generated by high-speed airflow shear will retain a large amount of aerosols in the liquid phase through the inertia effect. The experimental results indicate that an increase in injection pressure enhances the inertial effect, thereby improving the scrubbing efficiency. The increase in submergence also increases the residence time and probability of aerosols in contact with gas-liquid interfaces, ultimately leading to an improvement in scrubbing efficiency. Under steam jet conditions, the generation of thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis effects can improve the scrubbing efficiency of small-diameter aerosols. Under different submergence depths, there is a decreasing and then increasing relationship between scrubbing efficiency and aerosol diameter, with a turning point of around 0.3 μm. The change in liquid and gas temperature can alter the steam condensation rate and temperature gradient, thereby altering the scrubbing efficiency by affecting the thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis effects. After the temperature of the liquid pool decreases, the increase in temperature gradient and steam condensation rate will further improve the scrubbing efficiency. There is an approximate logarithmic relationship between the scrubbing efficiency and the gas-liquid phase temperature difference under the same injection pressure and submergence conditions. However, there are certain constraints on the proportion of thermal effects such as thermophoresis and diffusiophoresis, as well as the effects of inertia and submergence. By summarizing existing relevant experiments and fitting empirical formulas for predicting scrubbing efficiency under submerged jet conditions based on the dominant scrubbing mechanism, the predicted relative deviation range is －15%-25%, which can provide data and theoretical support for relevant experiments and models.

Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis serves as a tool for modeling physical phenomenon and evaluating the model validity. It finds applications in simulating the dynamical behavior of aerosols in different contexts. Hygroscopic growth of aerosol particles is one such domain where it can optimize the accuracy of model output greatly. Accurate prediction of hygroscopic growth characteristics depends on the intrinsic parameters and the size-dependent evolution of growth factors. In reactor accident scenarios, growth characteristics of fission/activation product aerosols play a significant role in determining the airborne or deposited fraction. Köhler theory is fundamentally used to predict the growth behavior of aerosols with a detailed physical explanation of critical size and supersaturation characteristics. Alternative approaches including modified Köhler theories and semi-empirical models rely on the linkage of physical and chemical composition-based parameters. The variation of involved parameters and the choice of working range influence the outcome of the theory greatly. This study is focused on sensitivity analysis of the modified Köhler theory given by Brechtel and Kreidenweis and the evaluation of sensitivity and associated uncertainty in the parameters. Monte Carlo approach has been employed, and sensitivity indices were obtained. Identified sensitive parameters were dry particle diameter, solute density, molecular weight, and chemical composition dependent factor (b0). These parameters require careful attention while designing experimental measurements and/or preprocessing model inputs. All sensitive parameters were subjected to uncertainty analysis and the overall output of the aerosol growth code thus obtained has been observed to follow log-normal law with median size at 335.2 nm with a geometric standard deviation of 1.54. This finds applications in the case of studies aiming to predict the growth of aerosols in the reactor component systems during accident conditions. In such conditions, there lies no choice of selection of input parameters and one cannot be sure about their variation range. This provides a conservative estimate for such a random scenario as uncertainty analysis performed in this study covers all the random combinations of input parameters and the overall most probable grown droplet size is estimated.

Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for several diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), however, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Alternative nicotine products with reduced risk potential (RRPs) including tobacco heating products (THPs), and e-cigarettes have recently emerged as viable alternatives to cigarettes that may contribute to the overall strategy of tobacco harm reduction due to the significantly lower levels of toxicants in these products’ emissions as compared to cigarette smoke. Assessing the effects of RRPs on biological responses is important to demonstrate the potential value of RRPs towards tobacco harm reduction. Here, we evaluated the inflammatory and signaling responses of human lung epithelial cells to aqueous aerosol extracts (AqE) generated from the 1R6F reference cigarette, the glo™ THP, and the Vype ePen 3.0 e-cigarette using multiplex analysis of 37 inflammatory and phosphoprotein markers. Cellular exposure to the different RRPs and 1R6F AqEs resulted in distinct response profiles with 1R6F being the most biologically active followed by glo™ and ePen 3.0. 1R6F activated stress-related and pro-survival markers c-JUN, CREB1, p38 MAPK and MEK1 and led to the release of IL-1α. glo™ activated MEK1 and decreased IL-1β levels, whilst ePen 3.0 affected IL-1β levels but had no effect on the signaling activity compared to untreated cells. Our results demonstrated the reduced biological effect of RRPs and suggest that targeted analysis of inflammatory and cell signaling mediators is a valuable tool for the routine assessment of RRPs.

Objectives: N95 or Type II filtering face pieces (FFP2) are often worn during work hours or on public transportation to prevent airborne infection. The aim of this randomized controlled crossover study is to assess the impact of FFP2 induced breathing resistance on pulmonary function, blood gas values and discomfort during walking and stair climbing. Methods: N = 16 healthy adults (24.8 ± 2.2 years; 10 females,) participated. Interventions included (1) six minutes of walking in a 16-meter-long hallway (612 m) and (2) eight minutes of stair climbing in a two-story staircase (420 stairs), both with and without a FFP2 (> 48 h wash-out). Spiroergometric data (Ventilation, breathing frequency, tidal volume, oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide exhalation (primary outcome), end tidal carbon dioxide- and oxygen pressure) and self-reported response (Perceived exertion, dyspnoea and pain) were assessed during activities. Blood gas analysis (capillary carbon dioxide- (pCO2) (primary outcome) and oxygen partial pressure (pO2), pH, lactate and base excess) was measured immediately after cessation of activities. Manipulation effects (FFP2 versus no mask) were tested using repeated measures analyses of variance. Results: Analysis showed no effect of FFP2 on pCO2 or other blood-gas parameters but on carbon dioxide exhalation during walking: (mean 1067, SD 209 ml/min) (mean 1908, SD 426 ml/min) (F(15) = 19.5; p < 0.001; ηp2 = 0.566) compared to no mask wearing (mean 1237, SD 173 ml/min; mean 1908, SD 426 ml/min). Ventilation was decreased and dyspnoea was increased by FFP2 during activities. FFP2 led to lower oxygen uptake and lower end tidal oxygen but higher end tidal carbon dioxide during stair climbing. Conclusions: FFP2 decreased ventilation based on slower breathing patterns and led to limitations in pulmonary gas exchange and increased subjective dyspnoea. However, invasive diagnostics revealed no signs of clinically relevant metabolic effects immediately after everyday physical activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine dimethylsulfide (DMS) is an important source of natural sulfur to the atmosphere, with potential implications for the Earth's radiative balance. Coral reefs are important regional sources of DMS, yet their contribution is not accounted for in global DMS climatologies or in model simulations. This study accounts for coral-reef-derived DMS and investigates its influence on the atmosphere of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia, using the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator Atmospheric Model version 2 (ACCESS-AM2). A climatology of seawater surface DMS (DMSw) concentration in the GBR and an estimate of direct coral-to-air DMS flux during coral exposure to air at low tide are incorporated into the model, increasing DMS emissions from the GBR region by 0.02 Tg yr-1. Inclusion of coral-reef-derived DMS increased annual mean atmospheric DMS concentration over northeastern Australia by 29%, contributing to an increase in gas-phase sulfate aerosol precursors of up to 18% over the GBR. The findings suggest that the GBR is an important regional source of atmospheric sulfur, with the potential to influence local-scale aerosol-cloud processes. However, no influence on sulfate aerosol mass or number concentration was detected, even with a reduction in anthropogenic sulfur dioxide emissions, indicating that DMS may not significantly influence the regional atmosphere at monthly, annual or large spatial scales. Further research is needed to improve the representation of coral-reef-derived DMS in climate models and determine its influence on local, sub-daily aerosol-cloud processes, for which observational studies suggest that DMS may play a more important role. With the ongoing expansion of global observation networks, it is expected that we shall routinely analyze records of geophysical variables such as temperature from multiple collocated instruments. Validating datasets in this situation is not a trivial task because every observing system has its own bias and noise. Triple collocation is a general statistical framework to estimate the error characteristics in three or more observational-based datasets. In a triple colocation analysis, several metrics are routinely reported but traditional multiple-panel plots are not the most effective way to display information. A new formula of error variance is derived for connecting the key terms in the triple collocation theory. A diagram based on this formula is devised to facilitate triple collocation analysis of any data from observations, as illustrated using three aerosol optical depth datasets from the recent Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE). An observational-based skill score is also derived to evaluate the quality of three datasets by taking into account both error variance and correlation coefficient. Droplets of electrolyte solutions in an insulating medium are ubiquitous in nature. The net charges of these droplets are normally nonzero, and they fluctuate. However, a theory on the probability distribution function for the net charge of droplets is lacking, so far. Thus, a statistical‐mechanical theory of a charged droplet is developed including the effect of the electrostatic energy of charging as well as the random distribution of ions. Then, the probability distribution function for the net charge of an electrolyte droplet is calculated assuming that it is generated from a macroscopic solution with the different cation and anion concentrations. Summary: Aerosols could significantly influence ecosystem carbon and water fluxes, potentially altering their interconnected dynamics, typically characterized by water‐use efficiency (WUE). However, our understanding of the underlying ecophysiological mechanisms remains limited due to insufficient field observations.We conducted 4‐yr measurements of leaf photosynthesis and transpiration, as well as 3‐yr measurements of stem growth (SG) and sap flow of poplar trees exposed to natural aerosol fluctuation, to elucidate aerosol's impact on plant WUE.We found that aerosol improved sun leaf WUE mainly because a sharp decline in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) inhibited its transpiration, while photosynthesis was less affected, as the negative effect induced by declined PAR was offset by the positive effect induced by low leaf vapor pressure deficit (VPDleaf). Conversely, diffuse radiation fertilization (DRF) effect stimulated shade leaf photosynthesis with minimal impact on transpiration, leading to an improved WUE. The responses were further verified by a strong DRF on SG and a decrease in sap flow due to the suppresses in total radiation and VPD.Our field observations indicate that, contrary to the commonly assumed coupling response, carbon uptake and water use exhibited dissimilar reactions to aerosol pollution, ultimately enhancing WUE at the leaf and canopy level. The focus on aerosol analysis in the Levantine Region is driven by climate-change impacts, the region's increasing urban development and industrial activities, and its geographical proximity to major dust-source areas. This study conducts a comparative analysis of aerosol optical depth data from Aqua/MODIS and AERONET during different periods between 2003 and 2023 at four stations: IMS-METU-ERDEMLI (Mersin/Türkiye) (2004–2019), CUT-TEPAK (Limassol/Cyprus) (2010–2023), Cairo_EMA_2 (Cairo/Egypt) (2010–2023), and SEDE_BOKER (Sede Boker/Israel) (2003–2023). The objective is to evaluate the variability and reliability of AOD measurements between satellite and ground-based observations and to determine how well they represent regional climatology. The highest percentage of measurements within the expected error envelope was observed at the IMS-METU-ERDEMLI station, indicating the best agreement between MODIS and AERONET data at this location. The Seasonal-Trend Decomposition using Loess (STL) method revealed consistent spring and summer peaks influenced by dust transport from the Sahara and the Middle East, with lower values in winter. The study also considers the influence of cloud fraction on MODIS measurements and includes aerosol classification. A statistically significant slight positive trend in AOD values was identified at the IMS-METU-ERDEMLI station. Conversely, no significant trends were detected at the other stations. The results of this study agree with those of previous research on the impact of long-range dust transport on regional aerosol loadings, emphasizing the importance of integrating satellite and ground-based observations. Weekly cycles (WCs) in cloud properties have been reported and linked to aerosol effects. Yet the extent to which human activities contribute to their occurrence remains unclear. Here, we revisit aerosol–cloud interactions from the WCs over central Europe using long‐term satellite and reanalysis data. Significant WCs in aerosol and cloud droplet number concentration (Nd) are detected with minima/maxima on Monday/Friday, indicating a clear signal of the Twomey effect. Notably, Nd–to–aerosol sensitivity from WCs is found to decrease at larger aerosol concentrations, confirming the nonlinear behavior of the aerosol–Nd relation (in log–log space) reported previously, but from a distinct perspective. Nevertheless, no discernible WCs in liquid water path are found. The pronounced WCs in cloud cover are demonstrated to be driven by natural variability. Our results indicate that the WCs offer a useful pathway for investigating the Twomey effect, but are not as effective for detecting cloud adjustments. Plain Language Summary: Aerosol–cloud interactions are the largest uncertainty in the anthropogenic forcing of climate. Specifically, an increase in aerosols increases cloud droplet number concentration (the Twomey effect), which further changes liquid water path and cloud cover (cloud adjustments), ultimately alters radiations. Importantly, the sensitivity of cloud droplet number concentration to aerosol is found to decrease in polluted conditions, confirming the behavior of the nonlinear cloud response to aerosol as reported previously. It is demonstrated that the weekly cycle in liquid water path is negligible; though a pronounced cycle in cloud cover detected, it is predominately caused by natural variability. Hence, caution is warranted when attributing observed weekly cycle in cloud cover to aerosol effects. Background: Zinc fever is well described in medical literature, particularly in workers after handling zinc-containing materials at high temperatures e.g., in the welding of hot-dip galvanized steel sheets. It is not known whether zinc fever also occurs at low temperatures. Case presentation: We present the case of a 33-year-old Caucasian atopic painter and varnisher with work-related dyspnea, sweating, as well as multiple occurrences of fever. He was sent to Institute for Prevention and Occupational medicine of the German Social Accident Insurance, Institute of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (IPA) for the evaluation of isocyanate asthma, but an inhalative challenge with hexamethylene diisocyanate was negative. Since symptoms were closely related to the use of zinc coatings at room temperature without adequate protective measures, the diagnosis of zinc fever was made. After exposure cessation the worker immediately became symptom-free. The work as painter and varnisher may be associated with various exposures to hazardous substances. Besides solvents, epoxy compounds and isocyanates, which can cause obstructive respiratory diseases; additionally, zinc-containing agents should be considered as health hazards. Enclosed public spaces are hotspots for airborne disease transmission. To measure and maintain indoor air quality in terms of airborne transmission, an open source, low cost and distributed array of particulate matter sensors was developed and named Dynamic Aerosol Transport for Indoor Ventilation, or DATIV, system. This system can use multiple particulate matter sensors (PMSs) simultaneously and can be remotely controlled using a Raspberry Pi-based operating system. The data acquisition system can be easily operated using the GUI within any common browser installed on a remote device such as a PC or smartphone with a corresponding IP address. The exacerbation of air pollution during spring in Yunnan province, China, has attracted widespread attention. However, many studies have focused solely on the impacts of anthropogenic emissions while ignoring the role of natural processes. This study used satellite data spanning 21 years from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) to reveal two natural processes closely related to springtime ozone (O3) and PM2.5 pollution: stratospheric intrusions (SIs) and cross-border transport of biomass burning (BB). We aimed to assess the mechanisms through which SIs and cross-border BB transport influence O3 and PM2.5 pollution in Southwestern China during the spring. The unique geographical conditions and prevalent southwest winds are considered the key driving factors for SIs and cross-border BB transport. Frequent tropopause folding provides favorable dynamic conditions for SIs in the upper troposphere. In the lower troposphere, the distribution patterns of O3 and stratospheric O3 tracer (O3S) are similar to the terrain, indicating that O3 is more likely to reach the surface with increasing altitude. Using stratospheric tracer tagging methods, we quantified the contributions of SIs to surface O3, ranging from 6 to 31 ppbv and accounting for 10–38% of surface O3 levels. Additionally, as Yunnan is located downwind of Myanmar and has complex terrain, it provides favorable conditions for PM2.5 and O3 generation from cross-border BB transport. The decreasing terrain distribution from north to south in Yunnan facilitates PM2.5 transport to lower-elevation border cities, whereas higher-elevation cities hinder PM2.5 transport, leading to spatial heterogeneity in PM2.5. This study provides scientific support for elucidating the two key processes governing springtime PM2.5 and O3 pollution in Yunnan, SIs and cross-border BB transport, and can assist policymakers in formulating optimal emission reduction strategies. Sea fog is a societally relevant phenomenon that occurs under the influence of specific oceanic and atmospheric conditions including aerosol conditions. The Yellow Sea region in China regularly experiences sea fog events, of varying intensity, that impact coastal regions and maritime activities. The occurrence and structure of fog are impacted by the concentration of aerosols in the air where the fog forms. Along with industrial development, air pollution has become a serious environmental problem in Northeastern China. These higher pollution levels are confirmed by various satellite remote sensing instruments including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite that observes aerosol and cloud properties. These observations show a clear influence of aerosol loading over the Yellow Sea region, which can impact regional sea fog. In this study, high-resolution data sets from MODIS Aqua L2 are used to investigate the relationships between cloud properties and aerosol features. Using a bi-variate comparison method, we find that, for most cases, larger values of COT (cloud optical thickness) are related to both a smaller DER (droplet effective radius) and higher CTH (cloud top height). However, in the cases where fog is thinner with many zero values in CTH, the larger COT is related to both a smaller DER and CTH. For fog cases where the aerosol type is dominated by smoke (e.g., confirmed fire activities in the East China Plain), the semi-direct effect is indicated and may play a role in determining fog structure such that a smaller DER corresponds with thinner fog and smaller COT values. The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is an important climate pattern in Southeast Asia. This study delved into the aerosol effects on the EAWM by analysing simulations conducted with the Taiwan Earth System Model version 1 (TaiESM1) model, part of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). Our assessment, validated against observational and reanalysis data, revealed that TaiESM1 effectively replicates the robust circulation of the EAWM and aerosol concentrations, placing its performance above average level among CMIP6 models. Notably, the simulated global mean aerosol optical thickness exhibited an approximately 20% increase from 1850 to 2014. The increased aerosols corresponded to a weakened Aleutian Low and an intensified Siberian High, leading to a weakened EAWM in the lower atmosphere over extratropical areas. In addition, the cooling across the Northern Hemisphere might affect enhanced northerly winds at approximately 10°N, which are situated in the southern part of the EAWM. An analysis of the near‐surface temperature budget indicated that the aerosol‐induced cooling in East China and India was primarily driven by changes in shortwave and longwave radiation fluxes, albeit slightly offset by sensible heat and latent heat fluxes. Furthermore, our study also reveals that while the mechanisms through which anthropogenic aerosols affect the northern portion of the EAWM vary across most CMIP6 models, their impacts on the tropical region remain consistent. Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) is actively used for remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols and is currently one of the most sensitive and selective techniques for determining small concentrations of substances inside particles. The use of high-power femtosecond laser sources for LIFS-based remote sensing of aerosols contributes to the development of new-generation fluorescence atmospheric lidars since it makes it possible to overcome the energy threshold for the nonlinear-optical effects of multiphoton absorption in particles and receive the emission signal at long distances in the atmosphere. Our study is aimed at the development and experimental demonstration of the technique of nonlinear laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (NLIFS) based on the remote excitation of aerosol fluorescent emission stimulated by a spatially structured high-power femtosecond laser pulse. Importantly, for the first time to our knowledge, we demonstrate the advances in using stochastically structured plasma-free intense light channels (postfilaments) specially formed by the propagation of femtosecond laser radiation through a turbulent air layer to improve NLIFS efficiency. Aerosol transmission remains a major challenge for control of respiratory viruses, particularly those causing recurrent epidemics, like influenza A virus (IAV). These viruses are rarely expelled alone, but instead are embedded in a consortium of microorganisms that populate the respiratory tract. The impact of microbial communities and inter-pathogen interactions upon stability of transmitted viruses is well-characterized for enteric pathogens, but is under-studied in the respiratory niche. Here, we assessed whether the presence of five different species of commensal respiratory bacteria could influence the persistence of IAV within phosphate-buffered saline and artificial saliva droplets deposited on surfaces at typical indoor air humidity, and within airborne aerosol particles. In droplets, presence of individual species or a mixed bacterial community resulted in 10- to 100-fold more infectious IAV remaining after 1 h, due to bacterial-mediated flattening of drying droplets and early efflorescence. Even when no efflorescence occurred at high humidity or the bacteria-induced changes in droplet morphology were abolished by aerosolization instead of deposition on a well plate, the bacteria remained protective. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae were the most stabilizing compared to other commensals at equivalent density, indicating the composition of an individual’s respiratory microbiota is a previously unconsidered factor influencing expelled virus persistence. IMPORTANCE It is known that respiratory infections such as coronavirus disease 2019 and influenza are transmitted by release of virus-containing aerosols and larger droplets by an infected host. The survival time of viruses expelled into the environment can vary depending on temperature, room air humidity, UV exposure, air composition, and suspending fluid. However, few studies consider the fact that respiratory viruses are not alone in the respiratory tract—we are constantly colonized by a plethora of bacteria in our noses, mouth, and lower respiratory system. In the gut, enteric viruses are known to be stabilized against inactivation and environmental decay by gut bacteria. Despite the presence of a similarly complex bacterial microbiota in the respiratory tract, few studies have investigated whether viral stabilization could occur in this niche. BACKGROUND: Optimal aerosol delivery methods for spontaneously breathing patients with a tracheostomy remain unclear. Thus, we aimed to assess the impact of nebulizer placement, flow settings, and interfaces on aerosol delivery by using a vibrating mesh nebulizer and a jet nebulizer in line with unheated humidification. METHODS: An 8.0-mm tracheostomy tube was connected to the lung model that simulates adult breathing parameters via a collecting filter. Albuterol sulfate (2.5 mg/3 mL) was administered via a vibrating mesh nebulizer and a jet nebulizer, which was placed in line with unheated humidification provided by a large-volume nebulizer, with FIO2 set at 0.28, with gas flows of 2 L/min versus 6 L/min. Nebulizers were placed in line distal and proximal to the lung model by using a tracheostomy collar and a T-piece. Conventional nebulization was tested using a vibrating mesh nebulizer and a jet nebulizer directly connected to the tracheostomy tube bypassing the humidification device. The drug was eluted from the collecting filter and assayed with ultraviolet spectrophotometry (276 nm). RESULTS: During in-line nebulizer placement with unheated humidification, the inhaled dose was 2-4 times higher with a gas flow of 2 L/min than 6 L/min, regardless of nebulizer type, placement, or interface (all P < .05). At 6 L/min, the inhaled dose was higher with proximal than distal placement when using both interfaces, but, at 2 L/min, the inhaled dose was lower with proximal placement. With a jet nebulizer, the tracheostomy collar generated a higher inhaled dose at proximal placement compared with the T-piece, whereas the T-piece resulted in a higher inhaled dose than the tracheostomy collar with distal placement, regardless of the flow settings. Compared with conventional nebulization using a vibrating mesh nebulizer, an in-line vibrating mesh nebulizer with a large-volume nebulizer at 2 L/min had a similar inhaled dose, regardless of nebulizer placement and interface. In contrast, the in-line jet nebulizer was influenced by both placement and interface. CONCLUSIONS: Aerosol delivery with an in-line vibrating mesh nebulizer and jet nebulizer with unheated humidification was affected by nebulizer placement, interface, and gas flow settings.
