Abstract

Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor is a highly sensitive magnetic field sensor and is expected to be applied in various fields, such as magnetic recording, industrial sensing, and bio-medical sensing. To improve the detection capability of TMR sensors in low frequency regime it is necessary to suppress the 1/f noise. We theoretically study 1/f noise of a tiny TMR sensor using the macrospin model. Starting from the generalized Langevin equation, 1/f noise power spectrum and the Hooge parameter are derived. The calculated Hooge parameter of a tiny TMR sensor is much smaller than that of a conventional TMR sensor with large junction area. The results provide a new perspective on magnetic 1/f noise and will be useful for improvement of TMR sensors., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Moir\'e superlattices consisting of two-dimensional materials have attracted immense attention because of emergent phenomena such as flat band-induced Mott insulating states and unconventional superconductivity. However, the effects of spin-orbit coupling on these materials have not yet been fully explored. Here, we show that single- and double-bilayer antimony honeycomb lattices, referred to as antimonene, form moir\'e superlattices on a Bi(111) substrate due to lattice mismatch. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) measurements reveal the presence of spectral peaks near the Fermi level, which are spatially modulated with the moir\'e period. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) combined with density functional theory calculations clarify the surface band structure with saddle points near the Fermi level, which allows us to attribute the observed STM spectral peaks to the van Hove singularity. Moreover, spin-resolved ARPES measurements reveal that the observed surface states are Rashba-type spin-polarized. The present work has significant implications in that Fermi surface instability and symmetry breaking may emerge at low temperatures, where the spin degree of freedom and electron correlation also play important roles., Comment: 37 pages including Supplementary Information

Abstract

Type I interferons (IFN-Is) play a significant role in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) pathogenesis. Double-filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) is a treatment option for SLE; however, its effect on IFN-Is remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of DFPP on IFN-Is. Plasma from patients with SLE (n = 11) who regularly underwent DFPP was analysed using a cell-based reporter system to detect the bioavailability and inducing activity of IFN-I. The concentration of plasma dsDNA was measured, and western blotting analysis was used to assess the phosphorylation of the STING pathway. A higher IFN-I bioavailability and inducing activity were observed in patients compared to healthy controls, and both parameters decreased after DFPP. The reduction in IFN-I-inducing activity was particularly prominent in patients with high disease activity. Notably, this reduction was not observed in STING-knockout reporter cells. Additionally, plasma dsDNA levels decreased after DFPP treatment, suggesting that inhibition of the STING pathway was responsible for the observed decrease in activity. Western blotting analysis revealed suppression of STING pathway phosphorylation after DFPP. DFPP reduced IFN-I bioavailability and the inducing activity of plasma. This reduction is likely attributable to the inhibition of the STING pathway through the elimination of dsDNA.

Abstract

The superconducting (SC) cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_8$ (Hg1223) has the highest $T_{c}^{\rm opt}\simeq 138$ K (the experimental SC transition temperature at optimal hole doping) among cuprates at ambient pressure $P_{\rm amb}$. $T_{c}^{\rm opt}$ increases under pressure $P$ and reaches $164$ K at $P_{\rm opt}\simeq 30$ GPa, then decreases with increasing $P>P_{\rm opt}$. To understand the microscopic origin of this dome-like $P$ dependence of $T_{c}^{\rm opt}$, we consider the $ab$ $initio$ low-energy effective Hamiltonian (LEH) for the antibonding (AB) Cu$3d_{x^2-y^2}$/O$2p_{\sigma}$ band. In the AB LEH for cuprates with $N_\ell \leq 2$ laminated CuO$_2$ planes between block layers, it was proposed that $T_{c}^{\rm opt}\simeq 0.16|t_1|F_{\rm SC}$, where $t_1$ is the nearest neighbor hopping and the SC order parameter $F_{\rm SC}$ at optimal hole doping mainly depends on $u=U/|t_1|$ ($U$ is the onsite effective Coulomb repulsion): $F_{\rm SC}$ is maximal at $u_{\rm opt}\simeq 8.5$ and decreases sharply with decreasing $u$ for $uP_{\rm opt}$, the decrease in $T_{c}^{\rm opt}$ is accounted for by (II): The rapid decrease in $F_{\rm SC}$ with decreasing $u$ for $u

Abstract

The quantum antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice offers an archetypal frustrated system, which potentially realizes a quantum spin liquid characterized by the absence of standard spontaneous symmetry breaking even at zero temperature, unusually as an isotropic 3D system. Despite tremendous progress in the literature, however, the nature of the ground state of the fully quantum-mechanical spin Hamiltonian on the pyrochlore lattice still remains elusive. Here, we show that an unconventional type of quantum spin liquid is born out from the pyrochlore system after the self-organized dimensional reduction leading to confined states in 2D layers. This conclusion is obtained from state-of-the-art variational Monte Carlo (VMC) simulations at zero temperature. Quantum spin liquids triggered by the emergent dimensional reduction is an unexplored route of the spin-liquid formation. The dimensional reduction from 3D to 2D is a consequence of a conventional spontaneous symmetry breaking, while the resultant decoupling of layers enables the emergence of a 2D quantum spin liquid that is adiabatically disconnected from trivial product states and exhibits strong quantum entanglement. The stabilized quantum spin liquid exhibits an algebraic decay of correlations and vanishing excitation gap in the thermodynamic limit. The wave-function structure supports the fractionalization of the spin into spinons. This spin-liquid ground state persists in the presence of spin-orbit interactions, which expands the possibilities of realizing quantum spin liquids in real pyrochlore-structured materials., Comment: 34 pages, 24 figures, 6 Tables

Abstract

From lithium-ion batteries to high-temperature superconductors, oxide materials have been widely used in electronic devices. However, demands of future technologies require materials beyond oxides, as anion chemistries distinct from oxygen can expand the palette of mechanisms and phenomena, to achieve superior functionalities. Examples include nitride-based wide bandgap semiconductors and halide perovskite solar cells, with MAPbBr3 being a representation revolutionizing photovoltaics research. Here, we demonstrate magnetoelectric behaviour in quasi-two-dimensional halides (K,Rb)3Mn2Cl7 through simultaneous thermal control of electric and magnetic polarizations by exploiting a polar-to-antipolar displacive transition. Additionally, our calculations indicate a possible polarization switching path including a strong magnetoelectric coupling, indicating halides can be excellent platforms to design future multiferroic and ferroelectric devices. We expect our findings to broaden the exploration of multiferroics to non-oxide materials and open access to novel mechanisms, beyond conventional electric/magnetic control, for coupling ferroic orders., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract First-degree atrioventricular block (AVB) is a common electrocardiogram finding in clinical practice. Vascular dysfunction is associated with cardiovascular disease and events. There is no information on the association of AVB with vascular function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the associations of PR interval with vascular function assessed in well-characterized subjects. A total of 2220 subjects were enrolled in this study. We evaluated endothelium-dependent vasodilatation assessed by flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and endothelium-independent vasodilatation assessed by nitroglycerine-induced vasodilation (NID) in 106 subjects with first-degree AVB (70 men; mean age, 64.3 ± 12.9 years) and 1241 subjects with normal PR interval (531 men; mean age, 56.1 ± 13.9 years). 34. Importance of Circulating Leptin and Adiponectin in the Causal Pathways Between Obesity and the Development of Colorectal Cancer in Japanese Men

Abstract

Background: The mechanistic associations between obesity and risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) remain unclear. Here, using body mass index (BMI) as an obesity indicator, we decomposed the total effects of obesity on the risk of CRC into: (1) direct effects, which are possibly mediated by unmeasured or currently unknown factors; (2) indirect effects mediated by circulating leptin and adiponectin; and (3) indirect effects that are not mediated by circulating leptin and adiponectin but by hyperinsulinemia and chronic inflammation (assessed via circulating connecting peptide and C-reactive protein, respectively). Methods: We adopted a causal mediation framework, using data from a large prospective cohort study of 44,271 Japanese men. Results: BMI was not associated with the risk of CRC due to direct and indirect effects that were not mediated by circulating leptin and adiponectin. By contrast, individuals with BMIs of 25.0–27.4 kg/m2 (risk ratio 1.29; 95% confidence interval, 0.98–1.69) and ≥27.5 kg/m2 (risk ratio 1.28; 95% confidence interval, 0.98–1.68) had a higher risk of CRC due to indirect effects of circulating leptin and adiponectin. Conclusion: Our mediation analyses suggest that the association between BMI and CRC risk may be largely mediated by a pathway involving circulating leptin and adiponectin.

Abstract

Introduction: Preoperative estimations of blood loss are important when planning surgery for cervical spine injuries in older adults. The association between ankylosis and blood loss in perioperative management is of particular interest. This multicenter database review aimed to evaluate the impact of ankylosis on surgical blood loss volume in elderly patients with cervical spine injury. Methods: The case histories of 1512 patients with cervical spine injury at among 33 institutions were reviewed. After the exclusion of patients without surgery or whose blood loss or ankylosis status was unclear, 793 participants were available for analysis. Differences in blood loss volume were compared between the Ankylosis (+) group with ankylosis at the cervical level and the Ankylosis (−) group without by the inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) method using a propensity score. Results: Of the 779 patients (mean age: 75.0±6.3 years) eligible for IPTW calculation, 257 (32.4%) had ankylosis at the cervical level. Abstract

Background: Genetic epidemiological evidence for the kidney function traits in East Asian populations, including Japanese, remain still relatively unclarified. Especially, the number of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for kidney traits reported still remains limited, and the sample size of each independent study is relatively small. Given the genetic variability between ancestries/ethnicities, implementation of GWAS with sufficiently large sample sizes in specific population of Japanese is considered meaningful. Methods: We conducted the GWAS meta-analyses of kidney traits by leveraging the GWAS summary data of the representative large genome cohort studies with about 200,000 Japanese participants (n = 202,406 for estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] and n = 200,845 for serum creatinine [SCr]). Results: In the present GWAS meta-analysis, we identified 110 loci with 169 variants significantly associated with eGFR (on chromosomes 1–13 and 15–22; P < 5 × 10−8), whereas we also identified 112 loci with 176 variants significantly associated with SCr (on chromosomes 1–22; P < 5 × 10−8), of which one locus (more than 1 Mb distant from known loci) with one variant (CD36 rs146148222 on chromosome 7) for SCr was considered as the truly novel finding. Conclusion: The present GWAS meta-analysis of the largest genome cohort studies in Japanese subjects provided some original genomic loci associated with kidney function, which may contribute to the possible development of personalized prevention of kidney diseases based on genomic information in the near future.

Abstract

Abstract The formation of the topological surface state originates from bulk band inversion at the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band. The transition between normal and topological insulators is known as a topological phase transition. Here we show spin-polarized electronic states of Pb-based ternary topological insulators Pb(Bi1-x Sb x )2Te4 (x = 0.55, 0.70, 0.79) investigated by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. We visualize a pair of spin-polarized surface resonances dispersing along the upper edge of projected bulk bands in occupied states. Interestingly, a branch of the spin-polarized surface resonances continuously connects to the topological surface state. The coexistence of the topological surface state and the spin-polarized surface resonances can be explained by considering the topological phase transition.

Abstract

Abstract The intracellular bacterial pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis replicates within a membrane-bound compartment called the inclusion. Upon infection with several chlamydiae, each bacterium creates its own inclusion, resulting in multiple inclusions within each host cell. Ultimately, these inclusions fuse together in a process that requires the chlamydial protein IncA. Here, we show that inclusions form unique contact sites (inclusion contact sites, ICSs) prior to fusion, that serve as fusogenic platforms in which specific lipids and chlamydial proteins concentrate. Fusion depends on IncA clustering within ICSs and is regulated by PI(3,4)P2 and sphingolipids. As IncA concentrates within ICSs, its C-terminus likely interacts in trans with IncA on the apposing membrane, securing a high concentration of IncA at fusion sites. This regulatory mechanism contrasts with eukaryotic or viral fusion systems that are either composed of multiple proteins or use a change in pH to initiate membrane fusion. Thus, our study demonstrates that Chlamydia-mediated membrane fusion is primarily regulated by specific structural domains in IncA and its local organization on the inclusion membrane, which is affected by the host cell lipid composition.

Abstract

Abstract Proteinuria selectivity index (PSI) is a potential tool for histological classification and prediction of treatment response in nephrotic syndrome, but evidence is insufficient. Clinical relevance of fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) in nephrotic syndrome remains largely unexplored. This multicenter retrospective study included patients with nephrotic syndrome who underwent kidney biopsy between January 2012 and June 2022. Optimal cutoffs for predicting complete remission based on PSI and FENa were determined using receiver operating characteristic curves. Patients were divided into two groups using these cutoffs and followed until complete remission. Of the 611 patients included, 177 had minimal change disease (MCD), 52 had focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), and 149 had membranous nephropathy (MN). Median (interquartile range) PSI were 0.14 (0.09–0.19) for MCD, 0.33 (0.23–0.40) for FSGS, and 0.20 (0.14–0.30) for MN. FENa were 0.24 (0.09–0.68), 1.03 (0.50–2.14), and 0.78 (0.41–1.28). Patients with low PSI and FENa had a higher incidence of complete remission. Cox regression analyses demonstrated that both parameters were associated with achieving complete remission (HR 2.73 [95% CI 1.97–3.81] and HR 1.93 [95% CI 1.46–2.55], respectively). PSI and FENa may be useful for histological classification and predicting remission in nephrotic syndrome.

Abstract

We report the spectroscopic characterization of a Kerr parametric oscillator (KPO) based on the measurement of its reflection coefficient under a two-photon drive induced by flux modulation. The measured reflection spectra show good agreement with numerical simulations in term of their dependence on the two-photon drive amplitude. The spectra can be interpreted as changes in system's eigenenergies, transition matrix elements, and the population of the eigenstates, although the linewidth of the resonance structure is not fully explained. We also show that the drive-amplitude dependence of the spectra can be explained analytically by using the concepts of Rabi splitting and the Stark shift. By comparing the experimentally obtained spectra with theory, we show that the two-photon drive amplitude at the device can be precisely determined, which is important for the application of KPOs in quantum information processing.

Abstract

$\mathcal{H}\Phi$ [$aitch$-$phi$] is an open-source software package of numerically exact and stochastic calculations for a wide range of quantum many-body systems. In this paper, we present the newly added functions and the implemented methods in vers. 2 and 3. In ver. 2, we implement spectrum calculations by the shifted Krylov method, and low-energy excited state calculations by the locally optimal blocking preconditioned conjugate gradient (LOBPCG) method. In ver. 3, we implement the full diagonalization method using ScaLAPACK and GPGPU computing via MAGMA. We also implement a real-time evolution method and the canonical thermal pure quantum (cTPQ) state method for finite-temperature calculations. The Wannier90 format for specifying the Hamiltonians is also implemented. Using the Wannier90 format, it is possible to perform the calculations for the $ab$ $initio$ low-energy effective Hamiltonians of solids obtained by the open-source software RESPACK. We also update Standard mode $\unicode{x2014}$simplified input format in $\mathcal{H}\Phi$$\unicode{x2014}$ to use these functions and methods. An 84-year-old man presented with a large bronchial artery aneurysm with a tortuous afferent artery. A triple-coaxial system was used to perform super-selective catheterization, consisting of a small microcatheter, a large microcatheter, and a 4-Fr catheter. The large microcatheter was successfully placed inside the aneurysm, and coil embolization was performed using large detachable coils to reduce the procedure cost.

Abstract

High-speed magnetization switching of a nanomagnet is necessary for faster information processing. The ballistic switching by a pulsed magnetic filed is a promising candidate for the high-speed switching. It is known that the switching speed of the ballistic switching can be increased by increasing the magnitude of the pulsed magnetic field. However it is difficult to generate a strong and short magnetic field pulse in a small device. Here we explore another direction to achieve the high-speed ballistic switching by designing material parameters such as anisotropy constant, saturation magnetization, and the Gilbert damping constant. We perform the macrospin simulations for the ballistic switching of in-plane magnetized nano magnets with varying material parameters. The results are analyzed based on the switching dynamics on the energy density contour. We show that the pulse width required for the ballistic switching can be reduced by increasing the magnetic anisotropy constant or by decreasing the saturation magnetization. We also show that there exists an optimal value of the Gilbert damping constant that minimizes the pulse width required for the ballistic switching.

Abstract Moiré superlattices consisting of two-dimensional materials have attracted immense attention because of emergent phenomena such as flat band-induced Mott insulating states and unconventional superconductivity. However, the effects of spin-orbit coupling on these materials have not yet been fully explored. Here, we show that single- and double-bilayer antimony honeycomb lattices, referred to as antimonene, form moiré superlattices on a Bi(111) substrate due to lattice mismatch. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) measurements reveal the presence of spectral peaks near the Fermi level, which are spatially modulated with the moiré period. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) combined with density functional theory calculations clarify the surface band structure with saddle points near the Fermi level, which allows us to attribute the observed STM spectral peaks to the van Hove singularity. Moreover, spin-resolved ARPES measurements reveal that the observed surface states are Rashba-type spin-polarized. The present work has significant implications in that Fermi surface instability and symmetry breaking may emerge at low temperatures, where the spin degree of freedom and electron correlation also play important roles.
