Abstract

The duality of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and a double scaled matrix integral has led to studies of the canonical spectral form factor (SFF) in the so called $\tau-$scaled limit of large times, $t \to \infty$, and fixed temperature in order to demonstrate agreement with universal random matrix theory (RMT). Though this has been established for the unitary case, extensions to other symmetry classes requires the inclusion of unorientable manifolds in the sum over geometries, necessary to address time reversal invariance, and regularization of the corresponding prime geometrical objects, the Weil-Petersson (WP) volumes. We report here how universal signatures of quantum chaos, witnessed by the fidelity to the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, emerge for the low-energy limit of unorientable JT gravity, i.e. the Airy model/topological gravity. To this end, we implement the loop equations for the corresponding dual (double-scaled) matrix model and find the generic form of the Airy WP volumes, supported by calculations using unorientable Kontsevich graphs. In an apparent violation of the gravity/chaos duality, the $\tau-$scaled SFF on the gravity side acquires both logarithmic and power law contributions in $t$, not manifestly present on the RMT side. We show the expressions can be made to agree by means of bootstrapping-like relations hidden in the asymptotic expansions of generalized hypergeometric functions. Motivated by Tsirelson's implicitly defined pathological Banach space, T. Gowers asked whether explicitly defined Banach spaces must include either $c_0$ or some $\ell^p$. J. Iovino and P. Casazza gave an affirmative answer for first-order continuous logic. We greatly extend their work to logics with much weaker requirements than compactness on their type spaces. Abstract

A technique for reducing the number of integrals in a Monte Carlo calculation is introduced. For integrations relying on classical or mean-field trajectories with local weighting functions, it is possible to integrate analytically at least half of the integration variables prior to setting up the particular Monte Carlo calculation of interest, in some cases more. Proper accounting of invariant phase space structures shows the system's dynamics is reducible into composite stable and unstable degrees of freedom. Stable degrees of freedom behave locally in the reduced dimensional phase space exactly as an analogous integrable system would. Classification of the unstable degrees of freedom is dependent upon the degree of chaos present in the dynamics. The techniques for deriving the requisite canonical coordinate transformations are developed and shown to block diagonalize the stability matrix into irreducible parts. In doing so, it is demonstrated how to reduce the amount of sampling directions necessary in a Monte Carlo simulation. The technique is illustrated by calculating return probabilities and expectation values for different dynamical regimes of a two-degree-of-freedom coupled quartic oscillator within a classical Wigner method framework.

7. Teacher Strategies That Enhance High School Completion Rates for Students Affected by Parental Incarceration: A Qualitative Case Study

Abstract

The problem that was addressed in this study was that Title I high school teachers, in Southeastern Michigan, are unclear about how to accommodate their students, who experience parental incarceration and without the intervention of appropriate strategies, these students face a high risk of never completing their high school education and a high probability of experiencing incarceration, themselves. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of Title I teachers and ask them to identify teacher strategies used to enhance graduation rates for students with incarcerated parents and the barriers these students faced, based on the teachers' perceptions and experiences. The theoretical framework used was social constructivism which included examining all the teacher responses to gain a better understanding of their strategies used. The final sample included nine Title I teachers from Southeastern Michigan who each verbally affirmed that they employed teacher strategies they perceived to be of value that boosted these students to complete high school on time. Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions and documents were used as the data collection method to optimize the research results. Using the NVivo software, the researcher coded and categorized the data and the themes emerged. The results of the study spotlighted the need for ongoing and focused professional development for Title I and special education teachers and revealed how mass incarceration results in low student achievement. As well, mass incarceration was shown to also hike special education enrollment which contributes to the rising number of special education students being Black, male, and with an incarcerated parent. The results of this study could be used to improve the support of special education and Title I teachers and investigate the effectiveness of innovative training methods and interventions they should utilize to enhance the graduation rates for students with an incarcerated parent. Abstract

Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), putatively via inflammasome activation. We pursued an inflammatory gene modifier scan for CHIP-associated CVD risk among 424,651 UK Biobank participants. We identified CHIP using whole-exome sequencing data of blood DNA and modeled as a composite, considering all driver genes together, as well as separately for common drivers (DNMT3A, TET2, ASXL1, and JAK2). We developed predicted gene expression scores for 26 inflammasome-related genes and assessed how they modify CHIP-associated CVD risk. We identified IL1RAP as a potential key molecule for CHIP-associated CVD risk across genes and increased AIM2 gene expression leading to heightened JAK2- and ASXL1-associated CVD risk. We show that CRISPR-induced Asxl1-mutated murine macrophages had a particularly heightened inflammatory response to AIM2 agonism, associated with an increased DNA damage response, as well as increased IL-10 secretion, mirroring a CVD-protective effect of IL10 expression in ASXL1 CHIP. Our study supports the role of inflammasomes in CHIP-associated CVD and provides evidence to support gene-specific strategies to address CHIP-associated CVD risk.

In December 2023, we observed through hospital-based surveillance a severe outbreak of enterovirus D68 infection in pediatric inpatients in Dakar, Senegal. Molecular characterization revealed that subclade B3, the dominant lineage in outbreaks worldwide, was responsible for the outbreak. Enhanced surveillance in inpatient settings, including among patients with neurologic illnesses, is needed.

Abstract

Abstract Background Serological screening tests play a crucial role to diagnose gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (gHAT). Presently, they preselect individuals for microscopic confirmation, but in future “screen and treat” strategies they will identify individuals for treatment. Variability in reported specificities, the development of new rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and the hypothesis that malaria infection may decrease RDT specificity led us to evaluate the specificity of 5 gHAT screening tests. Methods During active screening, venous blood samples from 1095 individuals from Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea were tested consecutively with commercial (CATT, HAT Sero-K-SeT, Abbott Bioline HAT 2.0) and prototype (DCN HAT RDT, HAT Sero-K-SeT 2.0) gHAT screening tests and with a malaria RDT. Individuals with ≥ 1 positive gHAT screening test underwent microscopy and further immunological (trypanolysis with T.b. gambiense LiTat 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6; indirect ELISA/T.b. gambiense; T.b. gambiense inhibition ELISA with T.b. gambiense LiTat 1.3 and 1.5 VSG) and molecular reference laboratory tests (PCR TBRN3, 18S and TgsGP; SHERLOCK 18S Tids, 7SL Zoon, and TgsGP; Trypanozoon S2-RT-qPCR 18S2, 177T, GPI-PLC and TgsGP in multiplex; RT-qPCR DT8, DT9 and TgsGP in multiplex). Microscopic trypanosome detection confirmed gHAT, while other individuals were considered gHAT free. Differences in fractions between groups were assessed by Chi square and differences in specificity between 2 tests on the same individuals by McNemar. Results One gHAT case was diagnosed. Overall test specificities (n = 1094) were: CATT 98.9% (95% CI: 98.1–99.4%); HAT Sero-K-SeT 86.7% (95% CI: 84.5–88.5%); Bioline HAT 2.0 82.1% (95% CI: 79.7–84.2%); DCN HAT RDT 78.2% (95% CI: 75.7–80.6%); and HAT Sero-K-SeT 2.0 78.4% (95% CI: 75.9–80.8%). In malaria positives, gHAT screening tests appeared less specific, but the difference was significant only in Guinea for Abbott Bioline HAT 2.0 (P = 0.03) and HAT Sero-K-Set 2.0 (P = 0.0006). The specificities of immunological and molecular laboratory tests in gHAT seropositives were 98.7–100% (n = 399) and 93.0–100% (n = 302), respectively. Among 44 reference laboratory test positives, only the confirmed gHAT patient and one screening test seropositive combined immunological and molecular reference laboratory test positivity. Conclusions Although a minor effect of malaria cannot be excluded, gHAT RDT specificities are far below the 95% minimal specificity stipulated by the WHO target product profile for a simple diagnostic tool to identify individuals eligible for treatment. Unless specificity is improved, an RDT-based “screen and treat” strategy would result in massive overtreatment. In view of their inconsistent results, additional comparative evaluations of the diagnostic performance of reference laboratory tests are indicated for better identifying, among screening test positives, those at increased suspicion for gHAT. Abstract

The Scholz conjecture on addition chains states that $\ell(2^n-1) \leq \ell(n) + n -1$ for all integers $n$ where $\ell(n)$ stands for the minimal length of all addition chains for $n$. It is proven to hold for infinite sets of integers. In this paper, we will prove that the conjecture still holds for $n=2^m(23)+7$. It is the first set of integers given by Thurber \cite{9} to prove that there are an infinity of integers satisfying $\ell(2n) = \ell(n)$. Later on, Thurber \cite{4} give a second set of integers with the same properties ($n=2^{2m+k+7} + 2^{2m+k+5} + 2^{m+k+4} + 2^{m+k+3} + 2^{m+2} + 2^{m+1} + 1$). We will prove that the conjecture holds for them as well.

Abstract

It is known that the Scholz conjecture on addition chains is true for all integers $n$ with $\ell(2n) = \ell(n)+1$. There exists infinitely many integers with $\ell(2n) \leq \ell(n)$ and we don't know if the conjecture still holds for them. The conjecture is also proven to hold for integers $n$ with $v(n) \leq 5$ and for infinitely many integers with $v(n)=6$. There is no specific results on integers with $v(n)=7$. In \cite{thurber}, an infinite list of integers satisfying $\ell(n) = \ell(2n)$ and $v(n) = 7$ is given. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture holds for all of them.

Abstract

We introduce a new topological generalization of the $\sigma$-projective hierarchy, not limited to Polish spaces. Earlier attempts have replaced $^{\omega}\omega$ by $^{\kappa}\kappa$, for $\kappa$ regular uncountable, or replaced countable by $\sigma$-discrete. Instead we close the usual $\sigma$-projective sets under continuous images and perfect preimages together with countable unions. The natural set-theoretic axiom to apply is $\sigma$-projective determinacy, which follows from large cardinals. Our goal is to generalize the known results for $K$-analytic spaces (continuous images of perfect preimages of $^{\omega}\omega$) to these more general settings. We have achieved some successes in the area of Selection Principles--the general theme is that nicely defined Menger spaces are Hurewicz or even $\sigma$-compact. The $K$-analytic results are true in ZFC; the more general results have consistency strength of only an inaccessible.

Abstract

Introduction African cities, particularly Abidjan and Johannesburg, face challenges of rapid urban growth, informality and strained health services, compounded by increasing temperatures due to climate change. This study aims to understand the complexities of heat-related health impacts in these cities. The objectives are: (1) mapping intraurban heat risk and exposure using health, socioeconomic, climate and satellite imagery data; (2) creating a stratified heat–health forecast model to predict adverse health outcomes; and (3) establishing an early warning system for timely heatwave alerts. The ultimate goal is to foster climate-resilient African cities, protecting disproportionately affected populations from heat hazards.Methods and analysis The research will acquire health-related datasets from eligible adult clinical trials or cohort studies conducted in Johannesburg and Abidjan between 2000 and 2022. Additional data will be collected, including socioeconomic, climate datasets and satellite imagery. These resources will aid in mapping heat hazards and quantifying heat–health exposure, the extent of elevated risk and morbidity. Outcomes will be determined using advanced data analysis methods, including statistical evaluation, machine learning and deep learning techniques.Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the Wits Human Research Ethics Committee (reference no: 220606). Data management will follow approved procedures. The results will be disseminated through workshops, community forums, conferences and publications. Data deposition and curation plans will be established in line with ethical and safety considerations.

Abstract Background Provision of critical care in rural areas is challenging due to geographic distance, smaller facilities, generalist skill mix and population characteristics. Internationally, the amalgamation telemedicine and retrieval medicine services are developing to overcome these challenges. Virtual emergency clinical advisory and transfer service (vCare) is one of these novel services based in New South Wales, Australia. We aim to describe patient encounters with vCare from call initiation at the referring site to definitive care at the accepting site. Methods This retrospective observational study reviewed all patients using vCare in rural and remote Australia for clinical advice and/or inter-hospital transfer for higher level of care between February and March 2021. Data were extracted from electronic medical records and included remoteness of sites, presenting complaint, triage category, camera use, patient characteristics, transfer information, escalation of therapeutic intervention and outcomes. Data were summarised using cross tabulation. Results 1,678 critical care patients were supported by vCare, with children (12.5%), adults (50.6%) and older people (36.9%) evenly split between sexes. Clinicians mainly referred to vCare for trauma (15.1%), cardiac (16.1%) and gastroenterological (14.8%) presentations. A referral to vCare led to an escalation of invasive intervention, skill, and resources for patient care. vCare cameras were used in 19.8% of cases. Overall, 70.5% (n = 1,139) of patients required transfer. Of those, 95.1% were transferred to major regional hospitals and 11.7% required secondary transfer to higher acuity hospitals. Of high-urgency referrals, 42.6% did not receive high priority transport. Imaging most requested included CT and MRI scans (37.2%). Admissions were for physician (33.1%) and surgical care (23.3%). The survival rate was 98.6%. Conclusion vCare was used by staff in rural and remote facilities to support decision making and care of patients in a critical condition. Issues were identified including low utilisation of equipment, heavy reliance on regional sites and high rates of secondary transfer. However, these models are addressing a key gap in the health workforce and supporting rural and remote communities to receive care.

Abstract

The construction of modern lysimeters with a precise weighing system made it possible to achieve an unprecedented accuracy of precipitation measurement. This study compares two methods of measuring precipitation in the conditions of the humid continental climate of the Eastern Slovakian Lowland (Slovakia): measurement using a standard tipping-bucket rain gauge vs. precision weighable lysimeter. Data from the lysimeter were used as a reference measurement. The comparison period lasted four years (2019–2022). Only liquid rainfall was compared. The rain gauge was found to underestimate precipitation compared to the lysimeter. Cumulative precipitation for the entire monitored period captured by the rain gauge was 2.8% lower compared to lysimeter measurements. When comparing hourly and daily totals of precipitation and precipitation events, a very high degree of agreement was detected (r2 > 0.99; RMSE from 0.22 to 0.51 mm h–1). A comparison based on precipitation intensity showed a decreasing trend in measurement accuracy with increasing precipitation intensity. This tendency has an exponential course. With increasing intensity of precipitation, increasing intensity of wind was also recorded. In order to correct measurement errors, simple correction method was proposed, which helped to partially eliminate the inaccuracies of the rain gauge measurement.

Abstract

In heavy soils, changes in humidity incur soil volume changes. In the horizontal plane, these are manifested by cracks formation and in the vertical plane by the movement of the soil surface. Cracks have a significant impact on hydrodynamics of the soil profile. The work is based on the hypothesis that soil volume changes depend on both the content of clay particles in soil and soil volumetric moisture. The aim of the work is to measure and analyze the changes in the width of the cracks and their reaction to the changes in volumetric soil moisture. One of the objectives of the work was to design a simple tool for accurate measurement and calculation of the crack width on the soil surface. For the study of crack width, a soil profile in an area on the East Slovakia Lowland was selected. The profile was examined under conditions of extreme drought, at the turn of July and August 2022. Crack width varied between 1.0 cm and 3.3 cm. The calculation procedure was evaluated as satisfactory for estimating the change in crack width on the soil surface.

34. Enhancing Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers' Understanding of Function Ideas

Abstract

Function is a multifaceted and essential concept in mathematics that includes various complex ideas such as mapping, relations between variables, algebra, input-output, and rule. Pre-service mathematics teachers' (PMTs) should have a rich understanding of these ideas for their future teaching practices. However, research showed that PMTs had a limited and superficial understanding of function as students do. Thus, a learning module was designed for improving PMTs' conceptualizations of function ideas as they relate to their personal concept definitions and examples of functions. A design-based research study was conducted with 17 senior PMTs. The study results suggest an improvement in the way PMTs define functions and identify a variety of function ideas in definitions and examples. Even if the mapping idea became dominant among all ideas in PMTs' personal concept definitions and examples, they could identify the implicit function ideas and develop an understanding of connections between ideas. We also provide suggestions for the second cycle of the intervention.

Abstract

The deposition of cholesterol-rich lipoproteins in the arterial wall triggers macrophage inflammatory responses, which promote atherosclerosis. The NLRP3 inflammasome aggravates atherosclerosis; however, cellular mechanisms connecting macrophage cholesterol accumulation to inflammasome activation are poorly understood. We investigated the mechanisms of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in cholesterol-loaded macrophages and in atherosclerosis-prone Ldlr−/− mice with defects in macrophage cholesterol efflux. We found that accumulation of cholesterol in macrophages treated with modified LDL or cholesterol crystals, or in macrophages defective in the cholesterol efflux promoting transporters ABCA1 and ABCG1, leads to activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes as a result of increased cholesterol trafficking from the plasma membrane to the ER, via Aster-B. In turn, the accumulation of cholesterol in the ER activates the inositol triphosphate-3 receptor, CaMKII/JNK, and induces NLRP3 deubiquitylation by BRCC3. An NLRP3 deubiquitylation inhibitor or deficiency of Abro1, an essential scaffolding protein in the BRCC3-containing cytosolic complex, suppressed inflammasome activation, neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis), and atherosclerosis in vivo. These results identify a link between the trafficking of cholesterol to the ER, NLRP3 deubiquitylation, inflammasome activation, and atherosclerosis.

Résumé Introduction : Peu de données sont disponibles dans la littérature concernant les patients en insuffisance rénale terminale traités initialement par hémodialyse chronique puis transférés en dialyse péritonéale. Le but de cette étude était d’évaluer les motifs de transfert des patients de l’hémodialyse chronique à la dialyse péritonéale et suivre leur devenir en dialyse péritonéale. Patients et Méthodes : Il s’agit d’une étude rétrospective, descriptive et analytique sur 17 ans au niveau de l’unité de dialyse péritonéale du CHU Aristide Le Dantec. Étaient inclus, les patients de plus de 18 ans en hémodialyse chronique pendant au moins 3 mois, puis transférés en dialyse péritonéale. Les données ont été collectées à partir des dossiers médicaux. Résultats : Vingt-six patients ont été colligés. L’âge moyen à l’initiation de la dialyse péritonéale était de 52,19±15,37 ans. Le sex-ratio était de 0,62. La principale néphropathie causale était la néphroangiosclérose (46,2%). Les motifs de transfert étaient le choix personnel (50%), les problèmes d’abords vasculaires (42,3%), l’intolérance hémodynamique (3,8%) et l’instabilité cardiovasculaire (3,8%). Concernant le devenir : 52,2% des patients étaient décédés, 43,5% remis en hémodialyse et 4,3% transplantés rénal. La moyenne de survie était de 503,000±108,343 jours. Le sexe féminin et l’abord vasculaire transitoire étaient des facteurs de risque de mortalité des patients transférés (OR=0,043 IC à 95% [1,085 ; 148,243] p=0,045) et (OR=0,047 IC à 95% [1,035 ; 112,840] p=0,048) respectivement. Conclusion : Le transfert de l’hémodialyse vers la dialyse péritonéale doit être anticipé dans notre contexte pour réduire la morbi-mortalité de nos patients sous dialyse chronique.

Abstract In 2022, many regions around the world experienced a severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) epidemic with an earlier-than-usual start and increased numbers of paediatric patients in emergency departments. Here we carried out this study to describe the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of RSV infection in patients hospitalized with severe acute respiratory infections in 2022. Samples were tested for RSV by multiplex real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Subsequently, a subset of RSV positive samples was selected for NGS sequencing. RSV was detected in 16.04%, among which RSV-A was confirmed in 7.5% and RSV-B in 76.7%. RSV infection were more identified in infants aged ≤ 11 months (83.3%) and a shift in the circulation pattern was observed, with highest incidences between September–November. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that all RSV-A strains belonged to GA2.3.5 genotype and all RSV-B strains to GB5.0.5a genotype. Three putative N-glycosylation sites at amino acid positions 103, 135, 237 were predicted among RSV-A strains, while four N-linked glycosylation sites at positions 81, 86, 231 and 294 were identified in RSV-B strains. Globally, our findings reveal an exclusive co-circulation of two genetic lineages of RSV within the pediatric population in Senegal, especially in infants aged ≤ 11 months.

Abstract

Historically low levels of seasonal influenza circulation were reported during the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic and were mainly attributed to implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions. In tropical regions, influenza’s seasonality differs largely, and data on this topic are scarce. We analyzed data from Senegal’s sentinel syndromic surveillance network before and after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to assess changes in influenza circulation. We found that influenza shows year-round circulation in Senegal and has 2 distinct epidemic peaks: during January–March and during the rainy season in August–October. During 2021–2022, the expected January–March influenza peak completely disappeared, corresponding to periods of active SARS-CoV-2 circulation. We noted an unexpected influenza epidemic peak during May–July 2022. The observed reciprocal circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza suggests that factors such as viral interference might be at play and should be further investigated in tropical settings.
