A broad effort is underway to understand and harness the interaction between superconductors and spin-active color centers with an eye on the realization of hybrid quantum devices and novel imaging modalities of superconducting materials. Most work, however, overlooks the complex interplay between either system and the environment created by the color center host. Here we use an all-diamond scanning probe to investigate the spin dynamics of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center proximal to a high-critical-temperature superconducting film in the presence of a weak magnetic field. We find that the presence of the superconductor increases the NV spin coherence lifetime, a phenomenon we tentatively rationalize as a change in the electric noise due to a superconductor-induced redistribution of charge carriers near the NV site. We build on these findings to demonstrate transverse-relaxation-time-weighted imaging of the superconductor film. These results shed light on the complex surface dynamics governing the spin coherence of shallow NVs while simultaneously paving the route to new forms of noise spectroscopy and imaging of superconductors.

Abstract Background Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are pivotal players in cellular processes, and their unique cell-type specific expression patterns render them attractive biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Yet, the functional roles of most lncRNAs remain enigmatic. To address the need to identify new druggable lncRNAs, we developed a comprehensive approach integrating transcription factor binding data with other genetic features to generate a machine learning model, which we have called INFLAMeR (Identifying Novel Functional LncRNAs with Advanced Machine Learning Resources). Methods INFLAMeR was trained on high-throughput CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) screens across seven cell lines, and the algorithm was based on 71 genetic features. To validate the predictions, we selected candidate lncRNAs in the human K562 leukemia cell line and determined the impact of their knockdown (KD) on cell proliferation and chemotherapeutic drug response. We further performed transcriptomic analysis for candidate genes. Based on these findings, we assessed the lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 6 (SNHG6) for its role in myeloid differentiation. Finally, we established a mouse K562 leukemia xenograft model to determine whether SNHG6 KD attenuates tumor growth in vivo. Results The INFLAMeR model successfully reconstituted CRISPRi screening data and predicted functional lncRNAs that were previously overlooked. Intensive cell-based and transcriptomic validation of nearly fifty genes in K562 revealed cell type-specific functionality for 85% of the predicted lncRNAs. In this respect, our cell-based and transcriptomic analyses predicted a role for SNHG6 in hematopoiesis and leukemia. Consistent with its predicted role in hematopoietic differentiation, SNHG6 transcription is regulated by hematopoiesis-associated transcription factors. SNHG6 KD reduced the proliferation of leukemia cells and sensitized them to differentiation. Treatment of K562 leukemic cells with hemin and PMA, respectively, demonstrated that SNHG6 inhibits red blood cell differentiation but strongly promotes megakaryocyte differentiation. Using a xenograft mouse model, we demonstrate that SNHG6 KD attenuated tumor growth in vivo. Conclusions Our approach not only improved the identification and characterization of functional lncRNAs through genomic approaches in a cell type-specific manner, but also identified new lncRNAs with roles in hematopoiesis and leukemia. Such approaches can be readily applied to identify novel targets for precision medicine.

Scalable integration of bright emitters in quantum photonic structures is an important step in the broader quest to generate and manipulate single photons via compact solid-state devices. Unfortunately, implementations relying on material platforms that also serve as the emitter host often suffer from a trade-off between the desired emitter properties and the photonic system practicality and performance. Here, we demonstrate 'pick and place' integration of a Silicon Nitride microdisk optical resonator with a bright emitter host in the form of 20nm thick hexagonal boron nitride (hBN).The film folds around the microdisk maximizing contact to ultimately form a composite hBN/Si3N4 structure. The local strain that develops in the hBN film at the resonator circumference deterministically activates a low density of SPEs within the whispering gallery mode volume of the microdisk. These conditions allow us to demonstrate cavity-mediated out-coupling and Purcell enhancement of emission from hBN color centers through the microdisk cavity modes. Our results pave the route toward the development of scalable quantum photonic circuits with independent emitter/resonator optimization for active and passive functionalities., Comment: 14 pages,7 figures

Applications of quantum science to computing, cryptography and imaging are on their way to becoming key next generation technologies. Owing to the high-speed transmission and exceptional noise properties of photons, quantum photonic architectures are likely to play a central role. A long-standing hurdle, however, has been the realization of robust, device-compatible single photon sources that can be activated and controlled on demand. Here we use strain engineering to create large arrays of quantum emitters in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The large energy gap inherent to this Van der Waals material stabilizes the emitters at room temperature within nanoscale regions defined by substrate-induced deformation of the flake. Combining analytical and numerical modeling we show that emitter activation is likely the result of carrier trapping in deformation potential wells localized near the points where the hBN flake reaches the highest curvature. These findings, therefore, hint at novel opportunities for the manipulation of single photon sources through the combined control of strain and external electrostatic potentials under ambient conditions.

- Abstract
Background: Beta-blockers are commonly used drugs during pregnancy, especially in women with heart disease, and are regarded as relatively safe although evidence is sparse. Differences between beta-blockers are not well-studied. Methods: In the Registry of Pregnancy And Cardiac disease (ROPAC, n = 5739), a prospective global registry of pregnancies in women with structural heart disease, perinatal outcomes (small for gestational age (SGA), birth weight, neonatal congenital heart disease (nCHD) and perinatal mortality) were compared between women with and without beta-blocker exposure, and between different beta-blockers. Multivariable regression analysis was used for the effect of beta-blockers on birth weight, SGA and nCHD (after adjustment for maternal and perinatal confounders). Results: Beta-blockers were used in 875 (15.2%) ROPAC pregnancies, with metoprolol (n = 323, 37%) and bisoprolol (n = 261, 30%) being the most frequent. Women with beta-blocker exposure had more SGA infants (15.3% vs 9.3%, p < 0.001) and nCHD (4.7% vs 2.7%, p = 0.001). Perinatal mortality rates were not different (1.4% vs 1.9%, p = 0.272). The adjusted mean difference in birth weight was −177 g (−5.8%), the adjusted OR for SGA was 1.7 (95% CI 1.3–2.1) and for nCHD 2.3 (1.6–3.5). With metoprolol as reference, labetalol (0.2, 0.1–0.4) was the least likely to cause SGA, and atenolol (2.3, 1.1–4.9) the most. Conclusions: In women with heart disease an association was found between maternal beta-blocker use and perinatal outcomes. Labetalol seems to be associated with the lowest risk of developing SGA, while atenolol should be avoided.

We report on measurements of three-body recombination rates in an ultracold gas of $^7$Li atoms in the extremely nonuniversal regime where the two-body scattering length vanishes. We show that the rate is well defined and can be described by two-body parameters only: the scattering length $a$ and the effective range $R_e$. We find the rate to be energy independent, and, by connecting our results with previously reported measurements in the universal limit, we cover the behavior of the three-body recombination in the whole range from weak to strong two-body interactions. We identify a nontrivial magnetic field value in the nonuniversal regime where the rate should be strongly reduced., Comment: Version with enhanced supplemental materials

We develop an experimental technique for rf-association of Efimov trimers from three-atoms continuum. We apply it to probe the lowest accessible Efimov energy level in bosonic lithium in the region where strong deviations from the universal behavior are expected, and provide quantitative study of this effect. Position of the Efimov resonance at the atom-dimer threshold, measured with a different experimental technique, concurs with the rf-association results., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Quantum Gases - Abstract
Efimov physics in two nuclear-spin sublevels of bosonic lithium is studied and it is shown that the positions and widths of recombination minima and Efimov resonances are identical for both states within the experimental errors which indicates that the short-range physics is nuclear-spin independent. We also find that the Efimov features are universally related across Feshbach resonances. These results crucially depend on careful mapping between the scattering length and the applied magnetic field which we achieve by characterization of the two broad Feshbach resonances in the different states by means of rf-spectroscopy of weakly bound molecules. By fitting the binding energies numerically with a coupled channels calculation we precisely determine the absolute positions of the Feshbach resonances and the values of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

We investigate three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance in a gas of ultracold 7Li atoms prepared in the absolute ground state and perform a comparison with previously reported results of a different nuclear-spin state [N. Gross et.al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 163202, (2009)]. We extend the previously reported universality in three-body recombination loss across a Feshbach resonance to the absolute ground state. We report on experimental evidence of universality in ultracold 7Li atoms' three-body recombination loss in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. We observe a recombination minimum and an Efimov resonance in regions of positive and negative scattering lengths, respectively, which are connected through the pole of the Feshbach resonance. Both observed features lie deeply within the range of validity of the universal theory and we find that the relations between their properties, i.e. widths and locations, are in an excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

A semiconductor laser subject to delayed optical feedback is investigated in the limit of extremely intense feedback power. In a range of feedback polarization rotation angles the emission spectra of the laser reveal a giant gap with width of more than a terahertz. The position of the gap and its width are shown to be regulated by means of feedback polarization rotation angle. We demonstrate that a theoretical approach, based on carrier density grating induced potential, explains our experimental results., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

BackgroundThe treatment of myopericarditis is different than that of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, since their clinical presentation is frequently similar it may be difficult to distinguish between these entities despite a disparate underlying pathogenesis. Myopericarditis is primarily an inflammatory disease associated with high C-reactive protein (CRP) and relatively low elevated troponin concentrations, while AMI is characterized by the opposite. We hypothesized that evaluation of the CRP/troponin ratio on presentation to the emergency department could improve the differentiation between these two related clinical entities whose therapy is different. Such differentiation should facilitate triage to appropriate and expeditious therapy.MethodsWe evaluated the CRP/troponin ratio on presentation among patients consecutively included in a large single center registry that included 1898 consecutive patients comprising 1025 ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, 518 Non-STEMI (NSTEMI) patients, and 355 patients diagnosed on discharge as myopericarditis. CRP and troponin were sampled on admission in all patients and their ratio was assessed against discharge diagnosis. ROC analysis of the CRP/troponin ratios evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of myopericarditis against all AMI, STEMI, and NSTEMI patients.ResultsMedian admission CRP/troponin ratios were 84, 65, and 436 mg×ml/liter×ng in STEMI, NSTEMI and myopericarditis groups, respectively (p500 resulted in specificity exceeding 85%, and for a ratio>1000, specificity>92%.ConclusionThe CRP/troponin ratio can serve as an effective tool to differentiate between myopericarditis and AMI. In the appropriate clinical context, the CRP/troponin ratio may preclude further evaluation.

Background Shortening the pain‐to‐balloon (P2B) and door‐to‐balloon (D2B) intervals in patients with ST‐segment–elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated by primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is essential in order to limit myocardial damage. We investigated whether direct admission of PPCI‐treated patients with STEMI to the catheterization laboratory, bypassing the emergency department, expedites reperfusion and improves prognosis. Methods and Results Consecutive PPCI‐treated patients with STEMI included in the ACSIS (Acute Coronary Syndrome in Israel Survey), a prospective nationwide multicenter registry, were divided into patients admitted directly or via the emergency department. The impact of the P2B and D2B intervals on mortality was compared between groups by logistic regression and propensity score matching. Of the 4839 PPCI‐treated patients with STEMI, 1174 were admitted directly and 3665 via the emergency department. Respective median P2B and D2B were shorter among the directly admitted patients with STEMI (160 and 35 minutes) compared with those admitted via the emergency department (210 and 75 minutes, P

The low level of methionine, an essential sulfur-containing amino acid, limits the nutritional quality of seeds. Two main factors can control the level of protein-bound methionine: the level of free methionine that limits protein accumulation and the methionine residues inside the storage proteins. To reveal the main limiting factor, we generated transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana seed-specific plants expressing the methionine-rich sunflower seed storage (SSA) protein (A1/A2). The contents of protein-bound methionine in the water-soluble protein fraction that includes the SSA in A1/A2 were 5.3- and 10.5-fold, respectively, compared to control, an empty vector (EV). This suggests that free methionine can support this accumulation. To elucidate if the level of free methionine could be increased further in the protein-bound methionine, these lines were crossed with previously characterized plants having higher levels of free methionine in seeds (called SSE). The progenies of the crosses (A1S, A2S) exhibited the highest level of protein-bound methionine, but this level did not differ significantly from A2, suggesting that all the methionine residues of A2 were filled with methionine. It also suggests that the content of methionine residues in the storage proteins is the main limiting factor. The results also proposed that the storage proteins can change their content in response to high levels of free methionine or SSA. This was assumed since the water-soluble protein fraction was highest in A1S/A2S as well as in SSE compared to EV and A1/A2. By using these seeds, we also aimed at gaining more knowledge about the link between high free methionine and the levels of metabolites that usually accumulate during abiotic stresses. This putative connection was derived from a previous analysis of SSE. The results of metabolic profiling showed that the levels of 29 and 20 out of the 56 metabolites were significantly higher in SSE and A1, respectively, that had higher level of free methionine, compared A1S/A2S, which had lower free methionine levels. This suggests a strong link between high free methionine and the accumulation of stress-associated metabolites.

Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Background Present guidelines endorse complete removal of cardiovascular-implantable electronic devices (pacemakers/defibrillators), including extraction of intracardiac electrodes, not only for systemic infections but also for localized "pocket infections." Objectives We evaluated the efficacy of delivering "Continuous, In-situ-Targeted, ultra-high concentration of Antibiotics" (CITA) into the infected subcutaneous the device-pocket, obviating the need for device/lead-extraction. Methods The CITA-Group consisted of 80 patients with pocket infection who were treated with CITA during 2007-2021. Of them, nine patients declined lead-extraction because of prohibitive operative risk, and six patients had questionable indications for extraction. The remaining 65 patients with pocket infection, who were eligible for extraction but opted for CITA treatment, were compared to 81 patients with pocket infection and similar characteristics who underwent device/lead-extraction as primary therapy. Results Eighty patients with pocket infection were treated with CITA during 2007-2021. CITA was curative in 85% (68/80) patients, who remained free of infection (median follow-up: 3 years, interquartile range 1 – 6.8 years). In the case-control study of CITA vs. device/lead extraction, cure rates were higher after device/lead-extraction than after CITA [96.2%; (78/81) vs. 84.6%; (55/65), p=0.027]. However, rates of serious complications were also higher after extraction [12 (14.8%) vs. 1 (1.5%), p=0.005]. All-cause 1-month and 1-year mortality were similar for CITA and device/lead-extraction (0% vs. 3·7%, p=0·25 and 12·3% vs. 13·6%, p=1·00, respectively). Extraction was avoided in 90·8% (59/65) extraction-eligible patients treated with CITA. Conclusions CITA is a safe and effective alternative for patients with pocket infection who are unsuitable or unwilling to undergo extraction.

[Abstract] Aims. This study aimed to assess age‐ and sex‐related differences in management and 1‐year risk for all‐cause mortality and hospitalization in chronic heart failure (HF) patients. Methods and results. Of 16 354 patients included in the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Long‐Term Registry, 9428 chronic HF patients were analysed [median age: 66 years; 28.5% women; mean left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) 37%]. Rates of use of guideline‐directed medical therapy (GDMT) were high (angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, beta‐blockers and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists: 85.7%, 88.7% and 58.8%, respectively). Crude GDMT utilization rates were lower in women than in men (all differences: P ≤ 0.001), and GDMT use became lower with ageing in both sexes, at baseline and at 1‐year follow‐up. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT prescription; however, age >75 years was a significant predictor of GDMT underutilization. Rates of all‐cause mortality were lower in women than in men (7.1% vs. 8.7%; P = 0.015), as were rates of all‐cause hospitalization (21.9% vs. 27.3%; P < 0.001) and there were no differences in causes of death. All‐cause mortality and all‐cause hospitalization increased with greater age in both sexes. Sex was not an independent predictor of 1‐year all‐cause mortality (restricted to patients with LVEF ≤45%). Mortality risk was significantly lower in patients of younger age, compared to patients aged >75 years. Conclusions. There was a decline in GDMT use with advanced age in both sexes. Sex was not an independent predictor of GDMT or adverse outcomes. However, age >75 years independently predicted lower GDMT use and higher all‐cause mortality in patients with LVEF ≤45%.

Embaràs i malaltia cardíaca; Resultats de l’embaràs; Transposició de les grans artèries Embarazo y enfermedad cardíaca; Resultados del embarazo; Transposición de las grandes arterias Pregnancy and cardiac disease; Pregnancy outcomes, Transposition of the great arteries Background In the past 3 decades, the arterial switch procedure has replaced the atrial switch procedure as treatment of choice for transposition of the great arteries. Although survival is superior after the arterial switch procedure, data on pregnancy outcomes are scarce and transposition of the great arteries after arterial switch is not yet included in the modified World Health Organization classification of maternal cardiovascular risk. Methods and Results The ROPAC (Registry of Pregnancy and Cardiac disease) is an international prospective registry of pregnant women with cardiac disease, part of the European Society of Cardiology EURObservational Research Programme. Pregnancy outcomes in all women after an arterial switch procedure for transposition of the great arteries are described. The primary end point was a major adverse cardiovascular event, defined as combined end point of maternal death, supraventricular or ventricular arrhythmias requiring treatment, heart failure, aortic dissection, endocarditis, ischemic coronary events, and thromboembolic events. Altogether, 41 pregnant women (mean age, 26.7±3.9 years) were included, and there was no maternal mortality. A major adverse cardiovascular event occurred in 2 women (4.9%): heart failure in one (2.4%) and ventricular tachycardia in another (2.4%). One woman experienced fetal loss, whereas no neonatal mortality was observed. Conclusions Women after an arterial switch procedure for transposition of the great arteries tolerate pregnancy well, with a favorable maternal and fetal outcome. During counseling, most women should be reassured that the risk of pregnancy is low. Classification as modified World Health Organization risk class II seems appropriate. Funding from “Zabawas Foundation” and “De Hoop Foundation” in addition to the support from EURObservational Research Programme (EORP) is greatly acknowledged. Women with dilated cardiomyopathy or left ventricular (LV) dysfunction (LV ejection fraction [LVEF] < 40%) from other etiology are at increased risk of maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. They should undergo preconception evaluation, risk assessment, and treatment modification including discontinuation and replacement of contraindicated medications. A close follow-up and treatment by a multidisciplinary team is recommended at all stages: preconception, gestation, delivery, and postpartum. An early gestational and delivery plan has to be prepared to face complications and to achieve a successful delivery and outcome. Long-term postpartum cardiac follow-up is recommended anticipating potential adverse effects of pregnancy. The recommended mode of delivery for most patients is vaginal. The indications for cesarian section are mainly obstetric, unless the patient is in severely decompensated heart failure or urgent delivery if the patient is receiving warfarin therapy. Cardiac events during pregnancy or in the first months postpartum occur in 32%-60% of patients. Prepregnancy signs of heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and New York Heart Association functional classification (NYHA FC) > II were associated with a poor cardiac outcome. Predictors of deterioration during pregnancy that are considered very high risk and should be advised to avoid pregnancy are: patients with NYHA FC III/IV unless improved under treatment and LVEF < 20%. Predictors for high risk of adverse outcome include: LVEF < 30%, NYHA FC II, ventricular tachyarrhythmias (including patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator),atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular rate, severe mitral regurgitation, significant right ventricular failure, and hypotension. Overall, despite a high rate of complications, most women with LV dysfunction can undergo a successful pregnancy.

Following the experience with the Horizon-10T detector systems, a completely new detector of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) has been designed to be built at Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan. The motivation of building HorizonT-Kazakhstan is to study in detail the phenomenon of the multi-modal EAS events that were initially explored by Horizon-8T and 10T detector systems. This detector will have a ns-level resolution of charged particle arrival times and pulse shape resolution. Each detection point is designed to have a total scintillation area approximately equal to 7.7 m2 and consists of three 1.6×1.6 m detectors located in a triangular arrangement for the local determination of the EAS disk arrival direction, and to have ns precision in timing between points. Local arrival direction is important following evidence of large angle differences in the multimodal events seen previously.

Integration of quantum emitters in photonic structures is an important step in the broader quest to generate and manipulate on-demand single photons via compact solid-state devices. Unfortunately, implementations relying on material platforms that also serve as the emitter host often suffer from a tradeoff between the desired emitter properties and the photonic system practicality and performance. Here, we demonstrate “pick and place” integration of a Si3N4 microdisk optical resonator with a bright emitter host in the form of ∼20-nm-thick hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The film folds around the microdisk maximizing contact to ultimately form a hybrid hBN/Si3N4 structure. The local strain that develops in the hBN film at the resonator circumference deterministically activates a low density of defect emitters within the whispering gallery mode volume of the microdisk. These conditions allow us to demonstrate cavity-mediated out-coupling of emission from defect states in hBN through the microdisk cavity modes. Our results pave the route toward the development of chip-scale quantum photonic circuits with independent emitter/resonator optimization for active and passive functionalities.

- Abstract
Aims: \ud Hypertensive disorders occur in women with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM). How often hypertensive disorders co-exist, and to what extent they impact outcomes, is less clear. We describe differences in phenotype and outcomes in women with PPCM with and without hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.\ud \ud Methods: \ud The European Society of Cardiology PPCM Registry enrolled women with PPCM from 2012-2018. Three groups were examined: 1) women without hypertension (‘PPCM-noHTN’); 2) women with hypertension but without pre-eclampsia (‘PPCM-HTN’); 3) women with pre-eclampsia (‘PPCM-PE’). Maternal (6-month) and neonatal outcomes were compared.\ud \ud Results: \ud Of 735 women included, 452 (61.5%) had PPCM-noHTN, 99 (13.5%) had PPCM-HTN and 184 (25.0%) had PPCM-PE. Compared to women with PPCM-noHTN, women with PPCM-PE had more severe symptoms (NYHA IV in 44.4% and 29.9%, p
