Abstract

We establish weak convergence rates for spectral Galerkin approximations of the stochastic viscous Burgers equation driven by additive trace-class noise. Our results complement the known results regarding strong convergence; we obtain essential weak convergence rate 2. As expected, this is twice the known strong rate. The main ingredients of the proof are novel regularity results on the solutions of the associated Kolmogorov equations.

Abstract

We prove that a semi-implicit time Euler scheme for the two-dimensional B\'enard-Boussinesq model on the torus D converges. The rate of convergence in probability is almost 1/2 for a multiplicative noise; this relies on moment estimates in various norms for the processes and the scheme. In case of an additive noise, due to the coupling of the equations, provided that the difference on temperature between the top and bottom parts of the torus is not too big compared to the viscosity and thermal diffusivity, a strong polynomial rate of convergence (almost 1/2) is proven in $(L^2(D))^2$ for the velocity and in $L^2(D)$ for the temperature. It depends on exponential moments of the scheme; due to linear terms involving the other quantity in both evolution equations, the proof has to be done simultaneaously for both the velocity and the temperature. Abstract

UNLABELLED: Infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli are the leading cause of death attributed to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide, and the known AMR mechanisms involve a range of functional proteins. Here, we employed a pan-genome wide association study (GWAS) approach on over 1,000 E. coli isolates from sick dogs collected across the US and Canada and identified a strong statistical association (empirical P < 0.01) of AMR, involving a range of antibiotics to a group 1 capsular (CPS) gene cluster. This cluster included genes under relaxed selection pressure, had several loci missing, and had pseudogenes for other key loci. Furthermore, this cluster is widespread in E. coli and Klebsiella clinical isolates across multiple host species. Earlier studies demonstrated that the octameric CPS polysaccharide export protein Wza can transmit macrolide antibiotics into the E. coli periplasm. We suggest that the CPS in question, and its highly divergent Wza, functions as an antibiotic trap, preventing antimicrobial penetration. We also highlight the high diversity of lineages circulating in dogs across all regions studied, the overlap with human lineages, and regional prevalence of resistance to multiple antimicrobial classes. IMPORTANCE: Much of the human genomic epidemiology data available for E. coli mechanism discovery studies has been heavily biased toward shiga-toxin producing strains from humans and livestock. E. coli occupies many niches and produces a wide variety of other significant pathotypes, including some implicated in chronic disease. We hypothesized that since dogs tend to share similar strains with their owners and are treated with similar antibiotics, their pathogenic isolates will harbor unexplored AMR mechanisms of importance to humans as well as animals. By comparing over 1,000 genomes with in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility data from sick dogs across the US and Canada, we identified a strong multidrug resistance association with an operon that appears to have once conferred a type 1 capsule production system.

4. On the microscopic structure of neat linear alkylamine liquids: an x-ray scattering and computer simulation study

Abstract

Ambient condition linear amines, from propylamine up to nonylamine, are studied by x-ray scattering and Molecular Dynamics simulations of various force field models. The major finding is that the pre-peak in alkylamines is of about one order of magnitude weaker than that in alkanols, hence suggesting much weaker hydrogen bonding induced clustering of the amine groups than for the hydroxyl groups. Computer simulation studies reveal that OPLS-UA model reproduces the pre-peak, but with larger amplitudes, while the GROMOS-UA and CHARMM-AA force fields show almost no pre-peak. Simulations of all models reveal the existence of hydrogen bonded clusters, equally confirmed through the prominent pre-peak of the structure factor between the nitrogen atoms. But, this pre-peak gets nearly cancelled by the various combinations of the atom-atom structure factors contributions to the scattering intensity, except for the OPLS model. The purpose of this work is to understand the weakness of the scattering pre-peak from the pair correlation function perspective, considered as an order parameter associated to the concept of charge order. The difference between models is equally analyzed from the same perspective. The analysis reveals the strong charge order induced structural similarity between amines and water, as opposed to mono-ols. This is traced back to the C2v symmetry of both the water molecule and the amine head group. It explains both the existence of H-bonded clusters and the weak scattering pre-peak. Concerning the models, the presence or absence of partial charges in the methyl groups of the alkyl tails explains the presence or absence of the pre-peak in the calculated scattering intensities

Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is frequent and responsible for cardiovascular complications and excessive daytime sleepiness. It is underdiagnosed due to the difficulty to access the gold standard for diagnosis, polysomnography (PSG). Alternative methods using smartphone sensors could be useful to increase diagnosis. The objective is to assess the performances of Apneal, an application that records the sound using a smartphone's microphone and movements thanks to a smartphone's accelerometer and gyroscope, to estimate patients' AHI. In this article, we perform a monocentric proof-of-concept study with a first manual scoring step, and then an automatic detection of respiratory events from the recorded signals using a sequential deep-learning model which was released internally at Apneal at the end of 2022 (version 0.1 of Apneal automatic scoring of respiratory events), in adult patients during in-hospital polysomnography.46 patients (women 34 per cent, mean BMI 28.7 kg per m2) were included. For AHI superior to 15, sensitivity of manual scoring was 0.91, and positive predictive value (PPV) 0.89. For AHI superior to 30, sensitivity was 0.85, PPV 0.94. We obtained an AUC-ROC of 0.85 and an AUC-PR of 0.94 for the identification of AHI superior to 15, and AUC-ROC of 0.95 and AUC-PR of 0.93 for AHI superior to 30. Promising results are obtained for the automatic annotations of events.This article shows that manual scoring of smartphone-based signals is possible and accurate compared to PSG-based scorings. Automatic scoring method based on a deep learning model provides promising results. A larger multicentric validation study, involving subjects with different SAHS severity is required to confirm these results., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

6. Geometry-aware framework for deep energy method: an application to structural mechanics with hyperelastic materials

Abstract

Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have gained considerable interest in diverse engineering domains thanks to their capacity to integrate physical laws into deep learning models. Recently, geometry-aware PINN-based approaches that employ the strong form of underlying physical system equations have been developed with the aim of integrating geometric information into PINNs. Despite ongoing research, the assessment of PINNs in problems with various geometries remains an active area of investigation. In this work, we introduce a novel physics-informed framework named the Geometry-Aware Deep Energy Method (GADEM) for solving structural mechanics problems on different geometries. As the weak form of the physical system equation (or the energy-based approach) has demonstrated clear advantages compared to the strong form for solving solid mechanics problems, GADEM employs the weak form and aims to infer the solution on multiple shapes of geometries. Integrating a geometry-aware framework into an energy-based method results in an effective physics-informed deep learning model in terms of accuracy and computational cost. Different ways to represent the geometric information and to encode the geometric latent vectors are investigated in this work. We introduce a loss function of GADEM which is minimized based on the potential energy of all considered geometries. An adaptive learning method is also employed for the sampling of collocation points to enhance the performance of GADEM. We present some applications of GADEM to solve solid mechanics problems, including a loading simulation of a toy tire involving contact mechanics and large deformation hyperelasticity. Abstract

Spin noise spectroscopy has become a widespread technique to extract information on spin dynamics in atomic and solid-state systems, in a potentially non-invasive way, through the optical probing of spin fluctuations. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new approach in spin noise spectroscopy, based on the detection of single photons. Due to the large spin-dependent polarization rotations provided by a deterministically-coupled quantum dot-micropillar device, giant spin noise signals induced by a single-hole spin are extracted in the form of photon-photon cross-correlations. Ultimately, such a technique can be extended to an ultrafast regime probing mechanisms down to few tens of picoseconds.
