We report the findings of a multi-language and multi-lab investigation of young infants' ability to discriminate lexical tones as a function of their native language, age and language experience, as well as of tone properties. Given the high prevalence of lexical tones across human languages, understanding lexical tone acquisition is fundamental for comprehensive theories of language learning. While there are some similarities between the developmental course of lexical tone perception and that of vowels and consonants, findings for lexical tones tend to vary greatly across different laboratories. To reconcile these differences and to assess the developmental trajectory of native and non-native perception of tone contrasts, this study employed a single experimental paradigm with the same two pairs of Cantonese tone contrasts (perceptually similar vs. distinct) across 13 laboratories in Asia-Pacific, Europe and North-America testing 5-, 10- and 17-month-old monolingual (tone, pitch-accent, non-tone) and bilingual (tone/non-tone, non-tone/non-tone) infants. Across the age range and language backgrounds, infants who were not exposed to Cantonese showed robust discrimination of the two non-native lexical tone contrasts. Contrary to this overall finding, the statistical model assessing native discrimination by Cantonese-learning infants failed to yield significant effects. These findings indicate that lexical tone sensitivity is maintained from 5 to 17 months in infants acquiring tone and non-tone languages, challenging the generalisability of the existing theoretical accounts of perceptual narrowing in the first months of life.

In Goffman's terms, qualitative interviews are social encounters with their own realities. Hence, the 'situational critique' holds that interviews cannot produce knowledge about the world beyond these encounters, and that other methods, ethnography in particular, render lived life more accurately. The situational critique cannot be dismissed; yet interviewing remains an indispensable sociological tool. This paper demonstrates the "value" that situationalism holds for interviewing. We examine seemingly contradictory findings from interview studies of middle-class identity (cultural hierarchies and/or egalitarianism?). We then render these contradictions comprehensible by interpreting data excerpts through 'methodological situationalism': Goffman's theories of interaction order, ritual, and frontstage/backstage. In 'situationalist interviewing,' we suggest that sociologists be attentive to the 'imagined audiences' and 'imagined communities'. These are key to identifying the situations, interaction orders, and cultural repertoires that lie beyond the interview encounter, but to which it refers. In sum, we argue for greater situational awareness among sociologists who must rely on interviews. We also discuss techniques and measures that can facilitate situational awareness. A promise of situational interviewing is that it helps us make sense of contradictions, ambiguities, and disagreements within and between interviews.

Social media (SoMe) is an important part of how young people socialize and communicate with each other and there are concerns that this may negatively impact peer relationships. The aim of this article was to explore how high school students experience the impact of SoMe on their peer relationships and the quality of these relationships. We performed qualitative semi-structured interviews with 12 Norwegian high-school students. Results showed that SoMe changed the quality of peer relationships as well as online and offline communication. The impact of SoMe on peer relationships depended on whether the students had both online and offline peer relations. Unlike offline relationships, where the youth experienced real friendships, online relationships were primarily described as contacts. The results suggest that online peer relationships often resemble affiliations rather than attachments. This may negatively impact social competence, especially among students whose peer relationships are mainly online-based.

Abstract Background The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) is increasing in many countries. Simultaneously, there is a growing number of consumers that follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, many due to its possible positive impact on sustainability and food waste. However, little is known about attitudes towards and experiences with UPF among vegetarians and vegans. Thus, this study investigates vegetarians’ and vegans’ experiences with and attitudes towards UPFs. Methods We conducted semi-structured, individual interviews with 14 participants between September and December 2021. The participants were from different areas in Norway. The data were analysed using a thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke. Results In general, participants appeared to have diverse knowledge of and divergent attitudes towards UPFs. However, participants mainly associated substitute products (e.g. meat substitutes, dairy substitutes) as UPFs. They appreciated the increased availability of vegetarian and vegan UPF which made it easier for them to follow a plant-based diet. They enjoyed the taste and consistency of vegetarian and vegan UPF. However, participants expressed concerns about the effects that industrial processing has on the products’ nutritional content. Conclusion This study indicated that there was a diverse knowledge of and various attitudes towards UPFs among the participating vegetarians and vegans. Public information and guidelines about using UPF (e.g. meat substitutes, dairy substitutes) in vegetarian and vegan diets are needed, as well as information about their possible impact on health and sustainability.

Objective. To evaluate whether use of a culturally adapted mobile application (app) for adolescents with type 1 diabetes is associated with improved metabolic control. Methods. The Dominican Republic’s National Institute of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Nutrition and the Learning to Live clinic recruited 23 pediatric participants for the study. Blood tests were performed before and after use of the app for a period of 3 months. Based on the user profile, participants were encouraged to use the app’s bolus insulin calculator after each meal. The app included a list of regionally and culturally specific foods, color-coded to indicate a high glycemic index (GI) as red; medium GI as yellow; and low GI as green. The color-coding was designed to assist participants in making healthier eating choices. Results. There were statistically significant improvements in lipid profile. Mean high-density lipoprotein values rose to acceptable levels, while low-density lipoproteins and triglyceride levels fell to the recommended values. The overall quality of life increased, although glycated hemoglobin levels showed no statistically significant changes. Conclusion. The findings of this study suggest that using this culturally tailored app can help young patients with type 1 diabetes to improve metabolic health.

Poor, unemployed rural young men are often presumed to be inevitable victims for jihadi recruitment in the Sahel. However, from the perspective of rural populations, jihadi violence’s social reconfiguration is only the latest episode in a long series of transformations of the social environment. Youth have developed various tactics to move their lives in advantageous directions and joining jihadis is only one potential pathway. Zooming in on Mali’s southern Sikasso region, this article proposes the framework of social navigation to make sense of the diverse trajectories of rural male youth. Based on 6 months of fieldwork and interviews with stakeholders in Bamako and Sikasso, it provides a framework that unites social transformation, youth’s agency and jihadi expansion.

Digital solutions have been reported to provide positive psychological and social outcomes to childhood critical illness survivors, a group with an increased risk for long-term adverse psychosocial effects.

From a practical point of view, grain structure heterogeneities are key parameters that control the rock response and still remains a challenge to incorporate in a quantitative manner. One of the less discussed topics in the context of the grain-based model (GBM) in the particle flow code (PFC) is the contact heterogeneities and the appropriate contact model to mimic the grain boundary behavior. Generally, the smooth joint (SJ) model and linear parallel bond (LPB) model are used to simulate the grain boundary behavior. However, the literature does not document the suitability of different models for specific problems. Another challenge in implementing GBM in PFC is that only a single bonding parameter is used at the grain boundaries. The aim of this study is to investigate the responses of a laboratory-scale specimen with SJ and LPB models, considering grain boundary heterogeneous and homogeneous contact parameters. Uniaxial and biaxial compression tests are performed to calibrate the response of Creighton granite. The stress–strain curves, volumetric dilation, inter-crack (crack in the grain boundary), and intra-crack (crack within the grain) development, and failure patterns associated with different contact models are examined. It was found that both the SJ and LPB models can reproduce the pre-peak behavior observed for a granitic rock type. However, the LPB model is unable to reproduce the post-peak behavior. Due to the large interlocking effect originating from the balls in contact and the ball size in the LPB model, local dilation is induced at the grain boundaries. This overestimates the volumetric dilation and residual shear strength. The LPB model tends to result in discontinuous inter-cracks and stress localization in the rock specimen, resulting in fine fragments at the rock surface during failure.

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition determined by the rotation of one part of stomach around another. Stomach can rotate around its longitudinal or short axis or both. The presentation can be acute, subacute and chronic due to twisting and untwisting andimaging should be performed in the acute phase. MDCT shows high accuracy in thediagnosis and definition of gastric volvulus being the preferred diagnostic test in emergency settings. Gastric volvulus may be associated or determined by pre-existing hiatal hernia and accurate analysis of CT signs may be evaluated on order to differentiate between a stomach in an abnormal position and a volvulus.At CT, a displaced antrum at the same level or cranial to the fundus and a transition point at the pylorus is diagnostic for mesenteroaxial volvulus. We present a case of a 70 years old woman with mesenteroaxial volvulus in hiatal hernia.

Introducción: La disfagia es una condición que afecta la eficiencia de la deglución de los alimentos. Mundialmente, una tercera parte de los ancianos padece de algún grado de disfagia, representando un alto riesgo de malnutrición debido a que las carentes opciones alimenticias destinadas a este público no satisfacensus requerimientos nutricionales. Objetivo: Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo desarrollar formulaciones de almuerzos con textura modificada para pacientes con disfagia, a partir de materias primas típicas dominicanas. Materiales y métodos: Se realizaron dos almuerzos de diferentes composiciones [sancocho (S) y arroz con habichuelas y carnes (AHC)] y viscosidades (néctar: 51-350 mPa.s; miel: 351-1,750 mPa.s y pudín: 1,751- 2,500 mPa.s), a los cuales se les evaluó el análisis químico aproximado y la aceptación sensorial.
