This article describes a new questionnaire, the "Diagnostic Inventory for Self-Regulated Language Learning" (DISLL), for assessing self-regulated learning strategies of students of English as an additional language. We discuss self-regulated learning models, evaluate existing questionnaires for assessing language learners' self-regulated strategy use, and present a rationale for the DISLL. We explain Zimmerman's (2000) three-phase model, adapted with simplified phase names: "planning, doing," and "reflecting." Every DISLL phase starts with a brief scenario to help learners judge how often they employ each strategy in that phase. Already completed are a review of the DISLL 1.0 by 18 international researchers, the step-by-step creation of the DISLL 1.1, and the profiling of vocabulary in the DISLL 1.1 to ensure the simplicity necessary for intermediate-level learners. We present an argument-based validation framework, to be supported by piloting the DISLL 1.2 in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Poland and even broader piloting of the DISLL 1.3. Statistical analyses will involve quantitative methods, e.g., exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and confirmatory composite analysis. At least one site will also use qualitative think-aloud protocols. The DISLL will be released into the public domain for free use after version 1.3.

Statement of the Problem: The satisfaction of patients with dentures on implants has different points of view that become fundamental aspects for the development of research on the quality of life of these patients, the eventual biomechanical complications to which these prostheses and implants can be subjected, and design considerations for cantilever extensions.Purpose: The objective of research was to assess the implants and prosthesis survival rates, biomechanical complications relative to the length of the distal extensions (cantilevers), and the satisfaction of the patients with a fixed implant-supported full-arch fiber-reinforced composites prosthesis.Materials and Method: A retrospective clinical and radiographic cohort study was developed. Clinical records of a selected cohort were analyzed according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data on a patient who underwent to fixed implant-supported full-arch fiber-reinforced composites prosthesis at least of five years of function were collected. Data analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier curves and Fisher's Exact Test. P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.Results: After insertion, 1 of 29 prostheses failed, the overall prosthetic survival rate observed at 5 years was 96.5%. Of the 120 implants placed in 28 patients, only 4 patients experienced loss of an implant during the 5 years of observation; the implant survival rate throughout the observation period was 86.2%. Distal extension seems to negatively affect the prognosis of implant-supported rehabilitation. Regarding the level of satisfaction of the patient with the prosthesis, none reported being uncomfortable or dissatisfied neither with their appearance nor with the taste of food throughout the studied period.Conclusion: No relevant associations were found between the variables involved. The study found the improvement in quality of life following the installation of fixed rehabilitation on the patients. Once the potential benefits of patients are obtained, controlled clinical trials are encouraged.

In this study, we used Gross's (2015) emotional regulation model to examine teachers' emotional regulation strategies and the relationship between this emotional regulation and the participation of students with ASD. The sample was selected using a non-probabilistic technique (convenience) with a total of 131 Cuban teachers from primary schools and preschools participating. The results revealed significant differences in the emotional regulation strategies used by teachers which were associated with teaching stage and specific ASD training, with primary school teachers and those who had ASD training obtaining better results. In addition, a significant relationship was found between teachers using cognitive reappraisal of emotions and the participation of students with ASD in school. Practical implications, teacher training programs and lines of future research are discussed.

A total of 40% of children with ASD have clinical symptoms of anxiety. However, there is little research on how teachers respond to this type of behaviour in the classroom. This study aimed to compare teachers' responses towards the anxiety of students with ASD and to explore the relationship between these responses and their ASD awareness and emotional regulation strategies. A quantitative study was conducted using a non-probabilistic sample of 139 Cuban teachers from primary schools and preschools. The results indicate that teachers responses towards the anxiety of students with ASD vary in relation to age, experience in inclusive schools, specific training on educating students with ASD and teaching stage, as well as the type of anxiety. The findings also revealed that emotional regulation and knowledge about ASD had a significant impact on teachers' responses. Practical implications and future lines of research are discussed.

Los intercambiadores de calor de placas soldadas son equipos fundamentales para los procesos de esterilización en la industria farmacéutica, por lo que es crucial diseñar planes de mantenimiento eficaces para evitar fallos que puedan comprometer la confiabilidad de estos procesos. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar, mediante la simulación de Montecarlo, una política óptima de mantenimiento para estos intercambiadores. Se utilizó una metodología descriptiva, aplicada y transversal basada en un diseño de campo. Se estudiaron siete intercambiadores de calor en una planta farmacéutica, sirviendo como población y muestra. Los instrumentos de recolección de datos incluyeron la revisión de registros existentes y la validación por expertos. El estudio demostró que la distribución Weibull es una herramienta útil para modelar los tiempos de falla de los intercambiadores y reveló que el tiempo óptimo de reemplazo es de aproximadamente 1,7 años, con un costo mínimo asociado de US$2.139. Estos hallazgos resultan esenciales para la planificación eficaz del mantenimiento y reemplazo de los equipos, así como para la optimización de los recursos económicos. Sin embargo, se reconoce la necesidad de una muestra más grande y de más datos para reforzar estas conclusiones.

Ion channels play key roles in human physiology and are important targets in drug discovery. The atomic-scale structures of ion channels provide invaluable insights into a fundamental understanding of the molecular mechanisms of channel gating and modulation. Recent breakthroughs in deep learning-based computational methods, such as AlphaFold, RoseTTAFold, and ESMFold have transformed research in protein structure prediction and design. We review the application of AlphaFold, RoseTTAFold, and ESMFold to structural modeling of ion channels using representative voltage-gated ion channels, including human voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channel - NaV1.8, human voltage-gated calcium (CaV) channel – CaV1.1, and human voltage-gated potassium (KV) channel – KV1.3. We compared AlphaFold, RoseTTAFold, and ESMFold structural models of NaV1.8, CaV1.1, and KV1.3 with corresponding cryo-EM structures to assess details of their similarities and differences. Our findings shed light on the strengths and limitations of the current state-of-the-art deep learning-based computational methods for modeling ion channel structures, offering valuable insights to guide their future applications for ion channel research.

The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago of volcanic origin in the Atlantic Ocean near the Saharan coast. The extensive intricacy and multitude of variables inherent in the Canary Islands winemaking tradition have posed a substantial challenge, preventing comprehensive research on the main factors contributing to the character of local wine, thus, far. This challenge arises from a convergence of factors including the presence of 14 different grape varieties, and radically different climatic, soil and geographic conditions. This investigation sought to start unraveling this complexity by discerning the impacts of various geographical (specifically, island-related) and management factors (namely, organic vs. conventional practices) on soils and wines within the Canary Islands. Additional variables, such as wine type (red and white) and island of origin, were explored and correlated with the chosen management system. Pairs of organic and conventional wine and soil samples, possessing similar characteristics, were systematically collected from each of the seven wine-producing islands in the Canary archipelago. An examination of elemental composition, oenological attributes and fertility parameters was conducted, followed by comprehensive statistical analysis. Among the variables examined, only the island of origin emerged as statistically significant within the sample. Concerning soil fertility, organic samples exhibited elevated levels of organic matter compared to their conventional counterparts. No notable disparities were observed between the two production methods in terms of soil metal composition and other fertility parameters. However, it is noteworthy that four soil samples surpassed the legally permissible limits for Nickel (Ni) and Mercury (Hg), with three of these instances originating from Lanzarote.

While anthropogenic impacts on urban and peri-urban biodiversity have been studied for at least fifty years, the effects of artificial lighting pollution on nocturnal biodiversity through public policies has been less explored. This article presents a map of lit surfaces in the Brest metropolitan area, based on public lighting management data, and its cross-referencing with land-use data to build a dark frame model. Mapping is first generated by combining a typology of photometric distributions with luminous flux values. Then, the model is built by calculating gridded biodiversity indices (deductive method) and landscape graphs (integrative method), tested on a bat species. A correction factor is incorporated to enable the model to be refined by field measurements. The results obtained show that the mapping is consistent with field observations and that the representation of illumination values is coherent. The dark frame model obtained reinforces pre-existing knowledge. The model is sufficiently accurate to identify potential wildlife hotspots and provide decision-making tools for land-use planning.

Teachers' knowledge of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) plays a key role in the successful inclusion of children with ASD in regular schools. The objective of this study was to analyze Cuban teachers' knowledge of ASD of at inclusive primary schools and preschools and to compare it with the results obtained in previous studies carried out at an international level. To do this, a cross-sectional study was conducted with Cuban teachers from urban and rural areas throughout the country. The sample was selected using a non-probabilistic technique. In total, 131 primary school and preschool teachers participated. Data were collected by applying the Autism Knowledge Questionnaire (AKQ) that measures ASD knowledge. The results indicated that Cuban teachers had an acceptable knowledge regarding ASD (0.57). Primary education teachers (17.58 ± 4.06) showed a higher level of knowledge than preschool teachers (15.35 ± 2.74). Regarding previous training, teachers who claimed to have received some type of specific ASD training (10.88 ± 3.29) made a greater number of errors than teachers who had not received specific training on ASD (8.91 ± 3.06). At the international level, Cuban teachers were observed to have similar knowledge about ASD when compared to active teachers or pre-service teachers from other countries where similar studies have been carried out. The results suggest that the training of Cuban teachers is not yet optimal to educate students with ASD in primary schools and preschools which are open to diversity.

Sexual arousal (SA) is a multidimensional experience that includes cognitive, emotional, motivational and physiological components. Texts with erotic content have been used to generate a state of SA. Erotic texts often include aggressive content that has not been evaluated in relation to SA. The aim of this work was to compare cortical functionality in women when reading a sexually explicit text (SET) and a sexually explicit text with aggression (SETA). Twenty-seven women participated. The EEG activity of the frontal, temporal and parietal locations was recorded during the reading of both texts. The participants found the SET to be more pleasant than the SETA. Both texts were identified as triggers of general and SA. While reading the SETA, there was an increase in absolute power in the frontal and parietal locations, a higher intrahemispheric correlation between the left frontal and temporal locations in fast frequency bands and a greater interhemispheric correlation between the frontal locations in the delta and alpha1 bands. These findings indicate that cortical functionality during SA in women differs based on the content and context of the erotic material being read, possibly associated with mechanisms that underlie the processing and incentive value assignment of stimuli with sexual and aggressive connotations.

Oat (Oa) and apple (Ap) starches were isolated and chemically modified by oxidation with 10% NaOCl to obtain oxidized starches (OOa and OAp), followed by cross-linking with a mixture of 5.6 g of sodium tripolyphosphate and 11 g of sodium trimetaphosphate to obtain doubly modified starches (OCOa and OCAp). In the native and modified starches, the functional properties (swelling power and solubility, and freeze-thaw stability) and thermal and rheological properties (steady-state flow curves and paste formation profile) were evaluated. The swelling power of native and double modified starches varied from 57 to 86 g/g and the solubility from 0.8 to 6.0 g/100 g, these variables increased as the study temperature increased; the increment in these properties was greater in Oa compared to Ap. Oxidation followed by crosslinking increased the freeze-thaw stability in Oa and Ap starches at 30, 60, 75, and 90 °C. It also increased the Tg of OCAp and OCOa ≈ 9% compared to the native samples, respectively; while an inverse pattern was observed in apparent viscosity were this value decreased ≈ 0.8 Pa × s for Oa and ≈ 0.5 Pa × s for Ap compared to the double modified samples. All samples presented a thinning cut-type behavior (pseudoplastic), indicating structural differences. Cross-linking in oxidized starches produced a reinforcing matrix that was determined in the paste formation profile. Dual modification (oxidation-cross-linking) could be an alternative for using starches from underused botanical sources, such as apples and oats, with different functional properties and feasible applications in food systems.

Background: Scientific progress demands the training of competent healthcare professionals so that their clinical and imaging skills become an essential and efficient component in Primary Health Care. Objective: To develop diagnostic imaging skills in primary healthcare physicians. Methodology: A pre-experimental study was conducted with a single-group, pre- and post-intervention design through an educational intervention aimed at developing diagnostic imaging skills in family medicine specialists at the primary healthcare level, affiliated with the "Juana Naranjo León" University Polyclinic in Sancti Spíritus in 2023. Results: In the teaching practice, the implementation of specially designed methodological workshops improved knowledge levels and developed imaging diagnostic skills in family medicine professionals. Conclusions: The results obtained in the pedagogical pre-experiment confirmed the enhancement of diagnostic imaging skills among these primary healthcare professionals, highlighting the need for educational strategies that provide didactic and support materials for the practical study of imaging.

El problema ambiental contemporáneo demanda la reconfiguración de la arquitectura institucional del federalismo, incluyendo la exploración de las capacidades institucionales para la gobernanza multinivel en este campo. Este artículo ofrece una revisión del marco conceptual para el estudio de la gobernanza sobre el cambio climático desde el régimen local en México. La investigación se sustenta en una revisión cualitativa y un análisis hermenéutico de la literatura académica, así como de fuentes legislativas. Los resultados señalan los principales obstáculos para una nueva gobernanza en el marco del Sistema Nacional del Cambio Climático (SINACC), comenzando por la obsoleta arquitectura institucional del gobierno municipal.

Fundamento: El aprendizaje electrónico como modalidad en la enseñanza, impulsado durante la pandemia de COVID-19, es un reto que puede influir de manera positiva en el rendimiento académico, asimismo optimizar la enseñanza tradicional en la educación médica actual. Objetivo: Describir el aprendizaje electrónico y el rendimiento académico en alumnos de 6.to año de Medicina Humana de la Universidad Privada San Juan Bautista, Sede Chorrillos durante el año 2022. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo y transversal. Se encuestaron de manera aleatoria 114 alumnos de 6.to año de Medicina Humana. Se recolectaron los datos mediante dos encuestas de escala tipo Likert en modalidad virtual mediante un link de Google Forms y analizados mediante Microsoft Excel. Resultados: El 50 % (n=57) de los estudiantes con edades entre 26 a 31 años. El 84 % (n=96) de los estudiantes tiene un nivel de aprendizaje electrónico medio; se observó en el 76 % (n=87) un rendimiento académico medianamente bajo. Conclusiones: El aprendizaje electrónico puede ser una modalidad efectiva para mejorar el rendimiento académico del estudiante.

El objetivo del estudio fue describir y caracterizar las tendencias de la producción intelectual a nivel de rendimiento y desarrollo temático en artículos que abordan el constructo “cultura científica” en el contexto educativo en el periodo 1998-2022. Para este análisis bibliométrico se hizo una búsqueda en la base de datos Web of Science con los descriptores “scientific culture” y “education” lo cual arrojó un total de 100 artículos (n=100), tras el cribaje y estudio de idoneidad de los documentos, se consideró finalmente 87 artículos (n= 87). Para la visualización y análisis se empleó estadística descriptiva apoyada en las herramientas Excel 365, Biblioshine by Bibliométrix,y VOSviewer. Las variables abordadas fueron: producción anual, categorías WoS, revistas e impacto, autores, países y palabras clave. Los hallazgos muestran que entre los años 2017 y 2020 se ha dado la mayor producción de artículos. La categoría WoS que más aborda el tema es Education Educational Research (9,08%). La principal revista es de habla inglesa: Public Understanding of Science y en relación con los países, España, Brasil y Estados Unidos son los de mayor producción. Las palabras clave de mayor relevancia son epistemología, educación, educación científica, formación docente, aprendizaje. Se concluye que esta producción intelectual es interdisciplinaria estimándose que ha sido influenciada por políticas públicas, con una marcada influencia anglosajona y europea; y con una escasa relación con temas vinculados con la didáctica de las ciencias naturales.

Floods affect chronically many communities around the world. Their socioeconomic impact increases year-by-year, boosted by global warming and climate change. Combined with long-term preemptive measures, preparatory actions are crucial when floods are imminent. In the last decade, machine learning models have been used to anticipate these hazards. In this work, we model the Ter river (NE Spain), which has historically suffered from floods, using traditional ML models such as K-nearest neighbors, Random forests, XGBoost and Linear regressors. Publicly available river flow and precipitation data was collected from year 2009 to 2021. Our analysis measures the time elapsed between observing a flow rise event at different stations (or heavy rain, for rainfall stations), and use the measured time lags to align the data from the different stations. This information provides increased interpretability to our river flow models and flood forecasters. A thorough evaluation reveals that ML techniques can be used to make short-term predictions of the river flow, even during heavy rain and large flow rise events. Moreover, our flood forecasting system provides valuable interpretable information for setting up timely preparatory actions.

City and the territory present quite broad and complex intellectual challenges that belong to the study in the discipline of urban planning. However, it isn’t intended to detract from the works, techniques and methodologies, but to show that the help of a disciplinary dialogue provides the researcher in urban planning and the student to visualize urban phenomena from another perspective and maintain a different vocabulary that allows validating the studies in the territory.This work aims, in the first instance, to reflect, question and induce the reader to a way of visualizing urban planning with a view to expressing what is happening in the territory in a measurable and quantitative way and that gives an articulated discourse to urban expression under the search for new hybrid tools that help direct urban study procedures through the principles of generating urbanometrics in research.The second objective is to present a statistical model that shows the relationship applied between economic units and size of the territory in the Xalapa’s Metropolitan area whose purpose is to demonstrate that urban phenomena can be measured under statistical techniques validated in conjunction with research in urban planning.Keywords: City, Urbanometrics, Regional Economic

BackgroundSuicide is a significant public health problem influenced by various risk factors, including dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Zinc (Zn), essential for pituitary function in hormone synthesis and release, has been linked to suicide, with studies noting reduced serum levels and altered brain transport mechanisms. Despite Zn’s crucial role in pituitary function and its involvement in suicidal behavior, information on pituitary Zn in suicide is scarce. Tumor cells modify Zn dynamics in tissues, and a previous report suggests microadenomas in the anterior pituitary as a risk factor for suicide.MethodsHistopathological analysis with hematoxylin-eosin stain and histochemical techniques to assess Zn homeostasis were carried out on anterior pituitary postmortem samples from 14 suicide completers and 9 non-suicidal cases.ResultsPituitary microadenomas were identified in 35% of suicide cases and none in the non-suicidal cases. Furthermore, compartmentalized Zn (detected via dithizone reactivity), but not free Zn levels (detected via zinquin reactivity), was lower in the suicide cases compared to the non-suicidal group.ConclusionThis is the first report of a potential association between disrupted Zn homeostasis and microadenomas in the anterior pituitary as a feature in suicide and provides critical insights for future neuroendocrine Zn-related research.
