Recognizing a traffic accident is an essential part of any autonomous driving or road monitoring system. An accident can appear in a wide variety of forms, and understanding what type of accident is taking place may be useful to prevent it from recurring. This work focuses on classifying traffic scenes into specific accident types. We approach the problem by representing a traffic scene as a graph, where objects such as cars can be represented as nodes, and relative distances and directions between them as edges. This representation of a traffic scene is referred to as a scene graph, and can be used as input for an accident classifier. Better results are obtained with a classifier that fuses the scene graph input with visual and textual representations. This work introduces a multi-stage, multimodal pipeline that pre-processes videos of traffic accidents, encodes them as scene graphs, and aligns this representation with vision and language modalities before executing the classification task. When trained on 4 classes, our method achieves a balanced accuracy score of 57.77% on an (unbalanced) subset of the popular Detection of Traffic Anomaly (DoTA) benchmark, representing an increase of close to 5 percentage points from the case where scene graph information is not taken into account., Comment: Won the 'Best Paper Runner-up Award' at the 2024 IEEE International Automated Vehicle Validation Conference (IAVVC 2024). The aim of this paper is to extend the framework of causal inference, in particular as it has been developed by Judea Pearl, in order to model actions and identify their intended effects, in the direction opened by Elisabeth Anscombe. We show how intentions can be inferred from a causal model and its implied correlations observable in data. The paper defines confounding effects as the reasons why teleological inference may fail and introduces interference as a way to control for them. The ''fundamental problem'' of teleological inference is presented, explaining why causal analysis needs an extension in order to take intentions into account.

The Toffoli gate is the essential ingredient for reversible computing, an energy efficient classical computational paradigm that evades the energy dissipation resulting from Landauer's principle. In this paper we analyze different setups to realize a magnetic implementation of the Toffoli gate using three interacting classical spins, each one embodying one of the three bits needed for the Toffoli gate. In our scheme, different control-spins configurations produce an effective field capable of conditionally flipping the target spin. We study what are the experimental requirements for the realization of our scheme, focusing on the degree of local control, the ability to dynamically switch the spin-spin interactions, and the required single-spin anisotropies to make the classical spin stable, showing that these are compatible with current technology.

This paper aims to extend the framework of causal modelling to teleological explanations. It conceives final models as second-order models produced by interventions on first-order causal models. It shows why such formalisation permits us to realise a finalistic interpretation of statistical correlation which is compatible with its usual causal interpretation. Initially, the paper identifies some conceptual conditions for statistical teleological analysis, specifically involving interventions. Then, it describes an explanation procedure for action and presents one simple example of identifiable final models. Finally, it compares these results with what could be obtained within a purely causalist framework.

Production of quantum states exhibiting a high degree of entanglement out of noisy conditions is one of the main goals of quantum information science. Here, we provide a conditional yet efficient entanglement distillation method which functions within the framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication. This method exploits indistinguishability effects due to the spatial overlap between two identical qubits in distinct sites and encompasses particle statistics imprint. We derive the general conditions for the maximum entanglement distillation out of mixed states. As applications, we give a thorough description of distilled entanglement and associated success probability starting from typical noisy states, such as thermal Gibbs states and Werner states. The influence of local temperatures and of noise parameter is discussed, respectively, in these two cases. The symmetrization postulate in quantum mechanics is formally reflected in the appearance of an exchange phase ruling the symmetry of identical particle global states under particle swapping. Many indirect measurements of this fundamental phase have been reported so far, while a direct observation has been only recently achieved for photons. Here we propose a general scheme capable to directly measure the exchange phase of any type of particles (bosons, fermions, anyons), exploiting the operational framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication. We experimentally implement it in an all-optical platform providing proof-of-principle for different simulated exchange phases. As a byproduct, we supply a direct measurement of the real bosonic exchange phase of photons. Also, we analyze the performance of the proposed scheme when mixtures of particles of different nature are injected. Quantum networking relies on entanglement distribution between distant nodes, typically realized by swapping procedures. However, entanglement swapping is a demanding task in practice, mainly because of limited effectiveness of entangled photon sources and Bell-state measurements necessary to realize the process. Here we experimentally activate a remote distribution of two-photon polarization entanglement superseding the need for initial entangled pairs and traditional Bell-state measurements. This alternative procedure is accomplished thanks to the controlled spatial indistinguishability of four independent photons in three separated nodes of the network, which enables us to perform localized product-state measurements in the central node acting as a trigger. We address the problem of entanglement protection against surrounding noise by a procedure suitably exploiting spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems. To this purpose, we take two initially separated and entangled identical qubits interacting with two independent noisy environments. Three typical models of environments are considered: amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel and depolarizing channel. After the interaction, we deform the wave functions of the two qubits to make them spatially overlap before performing spatially localized operations and classical communication (sLOCC) and eventually computing the entanglement of the resulting state. This way, we show that spatial indistinguishability of identical qubits can be utilized within the sLOCC operational framework to partially recover the quantum correlations spoiled by the environment. Quantum coherence, a basic feature of quantum mechanics residing in superpositions of quantum states, is a resource for quantum information processing. Coherence emerges in a fundamentally different way for nonidentical and identical particles, in that for the latter a unique contribution exists linked to indistinguishability which cannot occur for nonidentical particles. We experimentally demonstrate by an optical setup this additional contribution to quantum coherence, showing that its amount directly depends on the degree of indistinguishability and exploiting it to run a quantum phase discrimination protocol. Furthermore, the designed setup allows for simulating Fermionic particles with photons, thus assessing the role of particle statistics (Bosons or Fermions) in coherence generation and utilization. We provide a general framework which allows one to obtain the dynamics of $N$ noninteracting spatially indistinguishable particles locally coupled to separated environments. The approach is universal, being valid for both bosons and fermions and for any type of system-environment interaction. It is then applied to study the dynamics of two identical qubits under paradigmatic Markovian noises, such as phase damping, depolarizing and amplitude damping. Remote spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems as a direct controllable quantum resource at distant sites has not been yet experimentally proven. We design a setup capable to tune the spatial indistinguishability of two photons by independently adjusting their spatial distribution in two distant regions, which leads to polarization entanglement starting from uncorrelated photons. The amount of entanglement uniquely depends on the degree of remote spatial indistinguishability, quantified by an entropic measure $\mathcal{I}$, which enables teleportation with fidelities above the classical threshold. We propose a method to generate multi-mode N00N states with arrays of ultracold atoms. Our protocol requires a strong relative offset among the wells and a drive of the interparticle interaction at a frequency resonant with the offsets. The proposal is demonstrated by a numerical and a Floquet analysis of the quantum dynamics of a ring-shaped atomtronics circuit made of M weakly coupled optical traps. We generate a hierarchy of energy scales down to very few low-energy states where N00N dynamics takes place, making multi-mode N00N states appear at nearly regular time intervals. Initialization of composite quantum systems into highly entangled states is usually a must to allow their use for quantum technologies. However, the presence of unavoidable noise in the preparation stage makes the system state mixed, thus limiting the possibility of achieving this goal. Here we address this problem in the context of identical particle systems. We define the entanglement of formation for an arbitrary state of two identical qubits within the operational framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication (sLOCC). We then introduce an entropic measure of spatial indistinguishability under sLOCC as an information resource. We show that spatial indistinguishability, even partial, may shield entanglement from noise, guaranteeing Bell inequality violations. Quantum coherence plays a fundamental and operational role in different areas of physics. A resource theory has been developed to characterize the coherence of distinguishable particles systems. Here we show that indistinguishability of identical particles is a source of coherence, even when they are independently prepared. In particular, under spatially local operations, states that are incoherent for distinguishable particles, can be coherent for indistinguishable particles under the same procedure. We present a phase discrimination protocol, in which we demonstrate the operational advantage of using two indistinguishable particles rather than distinguishable ones. Quantum correlations of identical particles are important for quantum-enhanced technologies. The recently introduced non-standard approach to treat identical particles [G. Compagno et al., Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 376, 20170317 (2018)] is here exploited to show the effect of particle indistinguishability on the characterization of entanglement of three identical qubits. We show that, by spatially localized measurements in separated regions, three independently-prepared separated qubits in a pure elementary state behave as distinguishable ones, as expected. On the other hand, delocalized measurements make it emerge a measurement-induced entanglement. We then find that three independently-prepared boson qubits under complete spatial overlap exhibit genuine three-partite entanglement. These results evidence the effect of spatial overlap on identical particle entanglement and show that the latter depends on both the quantum state and the type of measurement., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. Quantum information and communication processing within quantum networks usually employs identical particles. Despite this, the physical role of quantum statistical nature of particles in large-scale networks remains elusive. Here, we show that just the indistinguishability of fermions makes it possible a new mechanism of entanglement transfer in many-node quantum networks. This process activates remote entanglement among distant sites, which do not share a common past, by only locally counting identical particles and classical communication.
