1. Teacher Attitudes and Perceptions of Inclusive Education: A Case of Ghana

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the knowledge and perceptions of 145 teachers from three regions in Ghana regarding inclusive education. The results show that the teachers have moderate knowledge of inclusive education practices and processes. Additionally, slight moderate positive relationships were found between participants' level of training in inclusive education and their knowledge of inclusive education. From the findings, we argue for stakeholders in teacher education to, as a matter of necessity, reconsider the curriculum and practicum for preparing special and general educators to focus on inclusive practices to effectively prepare pre-service teachers to succeed in inclusive settings. There is also a school leadership imperative, in view of site-specific challenges and needs, to influence school-based strategies to advance inclusionary practices. Successes of such initiatives could be replicated in other schools to advance inclusive education in Ghana. Implications of the study for teacher professional development and inclusive education practice in pre-tertiary educational institutions are underscored.

2. Teacher Evaluation and the Professional Development Connection: Perspectives of Special Education Teachers

Abstract: Teacher evaluation has been closely tied to professional development. In special education, professional development experiences are meant to promote special educator learning and implementation of high leverage practices. Yet, the connection between teacher evaluation outcomes and professional development decisions of special educators is largely unexplored. As part of a larger study that examined perceptions regarding the use of existing evaluation systems to assess their practice, this study explored how special educators perceive received feedback and its connection to their professional development needs and choices. The findings reveal a weak correlation between the feedback received in the evaluation process and its influence on professional development decisions and considerations for special educators. They further suggest a lack of encouragement on special educators' reflective practices or changes made to their teaching. A positive correlation was identified between perceptions about clarity and feedback received, and professional development decisions. Implications for future research are presented.

3. A case of ruptured infrapatellar bursa sac with Baker's cyst

Abstract: A 40-year-old female arrived with persistent posterior right knee pain, swelling in the popliteal, infrapatellar, anterior calf areas and difficulty walking due to joint stiffness. Multiple hypoechoic collections with internal echoes and debris were discovered in the anterior calf region using ultrasound imaging, which extended from a thick-walled infrapatellar hypoechoic collection with peripheral vascularity. A significant popliteal fossa cyst of comparable appearance was also observed. The results were consistent with a ruptured infrapatellar bursa sac and a popliteal fossa (Baker's cyst). The patient received conservative treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs, leading to the resolution of symptoms after a period of 6 weeks. For patients with more complex cysts, procedures like aspiration and corticosteroid injections under ultrasound guidance may be necessary. Recognizing the condition and using ultrasound for diagnosis and management can lead to successful outcomes.

Abstract: This study analyses the impact of COVID-19 on the economically bottom-class, low-income earners in Ghana, focusing on small-scale vendors to provide evidence of how the pandemic affected their day-to-day living conditions and poverty. How did the COVID-19 pandemic’s outcomes impact the economic and personal living standards of low-income earners in Ghana? I utilised content analysis and SPSS descriptive statistics to analyse 384 small-scale vendors (traders with Ghc500-Ghc3000 capital) in four cities or towns in Ghana between August and October 2021. Data analysis provides micro-level evidence that COVID-19 has threatened people’s ordinary living standards and has worsened poverty. Specifically, I find evidence that the pandemic’s outcomes negatively aff ected the socio-economic life of small-scale vendors, limiting their access to food, water, medical care, income, and capital while increasing poverty. The study expands the literature on the socio-economic impact of infectious diseases and serves policy relevance.

Abstract: After Kenya adopted a new constitution in 2010, the country embarked on extensive citizen-oriented reforms targeted at improving the performance of key public institutions and Kenyans' opinions of it. Much scholarly effort has gone into understanding the effects of these changes. This attention has disproportionately been on state institutions and political elites. The Kenyan public's attitudes and behaviours have not been sufficiently explored. The few studies devoted to systematically studying Kenyans' political attitudes employ a quantitative approach, which is ill-suited to unravelling complex realities. This limitation drives this thesis to adopt a qualitative approach to examine Kenyans' appraisals of institutional performance. Specific institutions studied are the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK), the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), and election courts. The goal is to determine the extent to which Kenyans' appraisals reflect the actual performance of institutions. Questions informed by theories of institutional performance (Mutua 2001; van de Walle 2001; Bierschenk & Olivier de Sardan 2014) and public attitude formation (Southwell & Yzer 2007; Shah 2015; Nyabuga & Ugangu 2018; Orji 2019) guided the investigation. One is, how has the social and political environment within which institutions are embedded shaped ECK, IEBC, and courts' performance from 2002 through 2017? Another is, how have the internal structures, norms, and processes of ECK, IEBC, and courts affected their performance from 2002 through to 2017? Finally, I ask, how have Kenyans' sources of information influenced their appraisals of the performance of ECK, IEBC, and courts from 2002 through to 2017? Fieldwork was conducted in Nairobi and Nyamira counties, Kenya. Mixed qualitative methods comprising one-on-one and group interviews of over 150 people of diverse backgrounds, observations, and analysis of the content of organisational, social and traditional media, and scholarly materials were employed during data collection. Findings from the analysis of election management, electoral dispute resolution, and Kenyans' appraisals of them enable the understanding of the research problem. The actual performance of institutions and citizens' appraisals of it are reflective of each other insofar as we consider that: both are characterised by successes/positives and failures/negatives emanating from the fusion of institutional and environmental influences; secondary or peripheral appraisals are rooted in citizens' unmediated experiences/observations of institutional performance; and citizens can infer their primary or overall appraisals from their own interactions with, or observations of, institutions under the conditions in which they may deviate from their preferred candidates/parties' stance on an institution's work. Since partisan sensitivities primarily direct citizens' overall appraisals, the thesis asserts that the actual functioning of institutions and the public's overall appraisals of it are fundamentally unreflective of one another. A shift in a political party/candidate's position on the overall quality of an institution's work is likely to induce a corresponding shift in their supporters' ideas of the quality of that institution's work. While supporters of election and electoral petition winners tend to judge election management and electoral dispute settlement processes and outcomes favourably, supporters of election and electoral petition losers are disposed to adjudge these contests unfavourably. The thesis concludes that partisan considerations mainly underlie the apparent inability of institutional reforms to uniformly improve citizens' attitudes towards the work of public institutions.

Abstract: The impact of vaccine hesitancy on global health is one that carries dire consequences. This was evident during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, where numerous theories and rumours emerged. To facilitate targeted actions aimed at increasing vaccine acceptance, it is essential to identify and understand the barriers that hinder vaccine uptake, particularly regarding the COVID-19 vaccine in Ghana, one year after its introduction in the country.We conducted a cross-sectional study utilizing self-administered questionnaires to determine factors, including barriers, that predict COVID-19 vaccine uptake among clients visiting a tertiary and quaternary hospital using some machine learning algorithms. Among the findings, machine learning models were developed and compared, with the best model employed to predict and guide interventions tailored to specific populations and contexts. A random forest model was utilized for prediction, revealing that the type of facility respondents visited and the presence of underlying medical conditions were significant factors in determining an individual's likelihood of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. The results showed that machine learning algorithms can be of great use in determining COVID-19 vaccine uptake.

Abstract: Background Globally, human rights violations experienced by persons with psychosocial, intellectual or cognitive disabilities continue to be a concern. The World Health Organization's (WHO) QualityRights initiative presents practical remedies to address these abuses. This paper presents an overview of the implementation of the initiative in Ghana. Aims The main objective of the QualityRights initiative in Ghana was to train and change attitudes among a wide range of stakeholders to promote recovery and respect for human rights for people with psychosocial, intellectual and cognitive disabilities. Method Reports of in-person and online training, minutes of meetings and correspondence among stakeholders of the QualityRights initiative in Ghana, including activities of international collaborators, were analysed to shed light on the implementation of the project in Ghana. Results In-person and online e-training on mental health were conducted. At the time of writing, 40 443 people had registered for the training, 25 416 had started the training and 20 865 people had completed the training and obtained a certificate. The team conducted 27 in-person training sessions with 910 people. The successful implementation of the project is underpinned by a committed partnership among stakeholders, strong leadership from the coordinating agency, the acceptance of the initiative and the outcome. A few challenges, both in implementation and acceptance, are discussed. Conclusions The exposure of the WHO QualityRights initiative to a substantial number of key stakeholders involved in mental healthcare in Ghana is critical to reducing human rights abuses for people with psychosocial, intellectual and cognitive disabilities.

Abstract: Dearth of quantification of the nexus between employee compensation and turnover gave rise to this empirical investigation of the effect of employee salary, employee pension scheme, employee allowance, employee share bonus, and employee savings scheme on turnover of Chevron Group of Companies using audited secondary data from annual reports for 2012 to 2021. Anchored on economic theory, the five hypotheses developed for the study were tested simultaneously based on univariate general linear model with the aid of statistical package for social sciences. The cardinal findings of this study (which carried out descriptive and inferential statistical analyses) show that the effect of employee compensation on turnover of Chevron Group with the studied period is mixed in line with reviewed literature. Salary of employees has non-significant negative effect on turnover; employee pension scheme has significant positive effect on turnover while employee allowances, share bonus, and savings scheme have significant negative effect on turnover. The findings of the study have salient significance in terms of theory, practice, and policy. Far reaching recommendations are put forward.

Abstract: Abstract Background Despite growing recognition of essential human rights, people with mental health conditions and psychosocial, intellectual, or cognitive disabilities’ rights are known to be frequently violated in mental healthcare worldwide, with common use of coercive practices and limited recognition of people’s right to exercise their legal capacity and make decisions for themselves on treatment and other issues affecting them. To tackle this issue, Ghana adopted the WHO QualityRights Initiative in 2019. This aims to introduce a right-based, person-centred recovery approach within the mental health care system, protecting and promoting the rights of people with mental health conditions, psychosocial, cognitive, and intellectual disabilities in the healthcare context and community. Methods E-training (capacity-building) was provided in Ghana across a broad array of stakeholder groups including healthcare professionals, carers, and people with lived experience. The training covered legal capacity, coercion, community inclusion, recovery approach, service environment, and the negative attitudes commonly held by stakeholder groups; it was completed by 17,000 people in Ghana as of December 2021. We assessed the impact of the e-training on attitudes through comparing trainees’ pre- and post-questionnaire responses on 17 items, each measured on a 5-point Likert scale (strongly disagree to strongly agree), such that higher scores indicated negative attitudes towards persons with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities as rights holders. Analyses were conducted on two main groups: matched pairs (417 pairs of baseline and follow-up questionnaire responses matched to a high degree of certainty), and the unmatched group (4299 individual completed questionnaire responses). Results We assessed the impact of the WHO QualityRights e-training on attitudes: training resulted in highly significant attitude changes towards alignment with human rights, with scores changing by approximately 40% between baseline and follow-up. In particular, attitude changes were seen in items representing treatment choice, legal capacity, and coercion. This change was not affected by age, gender, or background experience. Conclusions The QualityRights e-training programme is effective in changing people’s (especially healthcare professionals’) attitudes towards people with mental health conditions and psychosocial, intellectual, or cognitive disabilities: this is a step towards mental healthcare being more with human rights-based worldwide.

Abstract: Abstract Protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) catalyzes mono-methylation and symmetric di-methylation on arginine residues and has emerged as a potential antitumor target with inhibitors being tested in clinical trials. However, it remains unknown how the efficacy of PRMT5 inhibitors is regulated. Here we report that autophagy blockage enhances cellular sensitivity to PRMT5 inhibitor in triple negative breast cancer cells. Genetic ablation or pharmacological inhibition of PRMT5 triggers cytoprotective autophagy. Mechanistically, PRMT5 catalyzes monomethylation of ULK1 at R532 to suppress ULK1 activation, leading to attenuation of autophagy. As a result, ULK1 inhibition blocks PRMT5 deficiency-induced autophagy and sensitizes cells to PRMT5 inhibitor. Our study not only identifies autophagy as an inducible factor that dictates cellular sensitivity to PRMT5 inhibitor, but also unearths a critical molecular mechanism by which PRMT5 regulates autophagy through methylating ULK1, providing a rationale for the combination of PRMT5 and autophagy inhibitors in cancer therapy.

Abstract: The rapid spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria has led to an increased risk of infectious diseases. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in particular, poses a significant obstacle due to its propensity to rapidly acquire resistance to conventional antibiotics. This has resulted in an urgent need for the development of new classes of antibiotics that do not induce resistance. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been studied as potential small-molecule antibiotics due to their unique mode of action. In this study, peptides were extracted from the seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris (Fabaceae), and the antimicrobial activities of the extract were evaluated using microbroth dilution against five different microorganisms. The extract showed antimicrobial activity against all tested organisms with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 2.5 mg/mL, except for Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which had MICs of 1.25 mg/mL. The extract was also bacteriostatic for all tested organisms. The crude peptide extract from Phaseolus vulgaris was further studied for its antibiofilm activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common nosocomial pathogen associated with biofilm formation. The extract showed good antibiofilm activity at 1/2 MIC. The extract also inhibited the expression of pyocyanin and pyoverdine (virulence factors of P. aeruginosa whose expression is mediated by quorum sensing) by 82% and 66%, respectively. These results suggest that the peptide mix from Phaseolus vulgaris may inhibit biofilm formation and virulence factor expression by interfering with cell-to-cell communication in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ability of the extract to inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of all tested organisms indicates its potential as an antimicrobial agent that could be further studied for drug discovery.

Scant in the research, however, is an awareness about how life experiences with marginalization contribute toward the development of teacher educators' identities, particularly those focused on social justice, inclusion and individual dignity. In this study, collaborative autoethnography, an emerging qualitative method involving two or more researchers sharing their personal and professional narratives around particular topics, is utilized to explore the individual and collective experiences with marginalization of five teacher educators, and the influences of these experiences on their professional identities and teaching practices in education preparation programs in the United States. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

27. Improving Teacher Evaluation Outcomes for Special Educators: What Do the 'Gatekeepers' Say?

Abstract: Teacher evaluation has been at the forefront of accountability-related reforms in the United States due to the realization that teacher effectiveness is a major contributor to student success. Data from evaluations have revealed vital insights into contributing factors to teacher effectiveness and generated valuable information for hiring, promotion, remuneration, and retention of teachers. Using existing evaluation systems to assess special educator performance, has, however, been challenging for a plethora of reasons, leading to disparate experiences for special educators. This study examined special educator knowledge of the process, perceptions about the applicability of existing teacher evaluation frameworks to their roles, responsibilities, and classroom contexts, as well as views about personal cost incurred. Findings reveal that special educators lacked deeper knowledge about the key components of evaluation systems and perceived the evaluation rubrics as impractical for their roles, responsibilities, and classroom contexts. The findings also reveal a strong preference for differentiated evaluation systems for special educators. Implications for practice, policy, and research are presented.

28. Heart and Mind in Conflict: Teaching Special Needs Children in a Developing Nation

Abstract: A cross sectional design with a qualitative approach was used to purposively sample Special Education teachers at Dzorwulu Special School (a public institution) and Reyo Paddock School (a private institution) in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Face-to-face interviews were employed, complemented with in-class observations. Four key areas identified included challenges in working with the children, colleagues, parents, and the institutions. The respondents were able to cope with the noted challenges by using individualized educational programs, parental involvement, and using their own resources to secure logistical needs when necessary. This study concluded that the respondents complained of being drained out partly due to the challenges in handling different children with different needs in the same classroom, and the fact that the classes were mostly overcrowded. The study recommended that to minimize burnout of the respondents, school management should devise strategies that will promote collaboration and team work among the staff.

There is a lack of access to land; finance; technology; and education and skills in agribusiness. There are however mixed findings on access to finance and its influence on the engagement of the youth in agriculture. More studies should look at the influence of access to finance and other resources on youth engagement in agriculture. Further studies should look at the perception, intention and participation of the youth in agribusiness.

Abstract: Background: Zoonotic infections are a serious threat to human health and a direct risk that could potentially be fatal. Animals both domestic and wild serve as reservoirs for zoonotic infections. Thus, frequent contact with animals might occasionally result in the transfer of infections from animals to people. Ghana is especially susceptible to the effects of zoonotic infections due to the increase in the household human-animal ratio. This study assessed the awareness and knowledge level of tertiary students in a selected tertiary institution on zoonotic infections. Methods: A quantitative research method was employed making use of a descriptive cross-sectional study design. The target population chosen for the research was mainly students from the University of Ghana. A stratified sampling technique was used in selecting participants for the study. 440 participants were selected for the study. The university’s four primary colleges served as the strata for the basis of data collection. Results: The study revealed a moderate knowledge level among students. The term “zoonoses” was understood by the majority (70%) of the respondents. Respondents knew at least one route of transmission of zoonotic infection. For the spread of zoonotic infections, close contact with infected animals and consumption of contaminated food were seen as ways of spread by a majority. Conclusion: Although the basic strategies required for the control and elimination of the zoonotic diseases in such tertiary institutions are well known and practiced as per the study findings, zoonoses still persists and this can be attributed to low education on the subject. Knowledge and awareness level on zoonoses especially in tertiary institutions such as the University of Ghana could be improved if relevant authorities create adequate enlightenment programs on improving the knowledge of zoonotic diseases through a variety of media including seminars, workshop, television, radio, newspaper and social media.

Abstract: Abstract Background There are currently major efforts underway in Ghana to address stigma and discrimination, and promote the human rights of those with mental health conditions, within mental health services and the community, working with the World Health Organization’s QualityRights initiative. The present study aims to investigate attitudes towards people with lived experience of mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities as rights holders. Methods Stakeholders within the Ghanaian mental health system and community, including health professionals, policy makers, and persons with lived experience, completed the QualityRights pre-training questionnaire. The items examined attitudes towards coercion, legal capacity, service environment, and community inclusion. Additional analyses explored how far participant factors may link to attitudes. Results Overall, attitudes towards the rights of persons with lived experience were not well aligned with a human rights approach to mental health. Most people supported the use of coercive practices and often thought that health practitioners and family members were in the best position to make treatment decisions. Health/mental health professionals were less likely to endorse coercive measures compared to other groups. Conclusion This was the first in-depth study assessing attitudes towards persons with lived experience as rights holders in Ghana, and frequently attitudes did not comply with human rights standards, demonstrating a need for training initiatives to combat stigma and discrimination and promote human rights.

According to this perspective, the majority of graduates are recommended to start their own businesses rather than wait for positions from the government. This paper aims to examine the entrepreneurial intentions among University students, using variables such as Motivation, Family Background, Entrepreneurship Education and External Factors. This is a cross-sectional study where the results were based on the outcomes of a survey among the University of Cape Coast, school of Business students (n=130). Inferential statistical procedures such as the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test, Multiple Regression and Stepwise Regression Analysis were used to assess the study's specific aims and tested the four main hypotheses. The results indicated that all variables but Family Background positively influence students’ entrepreneurial intentions and that Motivation is statistically significant in analyzing the factors that significantly affect the students’ entrepreneurial intentions. Hence, more emphasis should be based on motivating the students both within and outside to enable them develop entrepreneurial mindsets. The study suggests that policymakers should focus on encouraging student entrepreneurship as it will be a proper management to deal with the severe unemployment issue in emerging countries, especially Ghana.

Abstract: Abstract Radon is an established lung carcinogen concentrating in indoor environments with importance for many workers worldwide. However, a systematic assessment of radon levels faced by all workers, not just those with direct uranium or radon exposure, has not previously been completed. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of workers exposed to radon, and the level of exposure (> 100–200 Bq/m3, 200–400 Bq/m3, 400–800 Bq/m3, and > 800 Bq/m3) in a highly exposed country (Canada). Exposures among underground workers were assessed using the CAREX Canada approach. Radon concentrations in indoor workplaces, obtained from two Canadian surveys, were modelled using lognormal distributions. Distributions were then applied to the susceptible indoor worker population to yield the number of exposed workers, by occupation, industry, province, and sex. In total, an estimated 603,000 out of Canada’s 18,268,120 workers are exposed to radon in Canada. An estimated52% of exposed workers are women, even though they comprise only 48% of the labour force. The majority (68%) are exposed at a level of > 100–200 Bq/m3. Workers are primarily exposed in educational services, professional, scientific and technical services, and health care and social assistance, but workers in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction have the largest number of exposed workers at high levels (> 800 Bq/m3). Overall, a significant number of workers are exposed to radon, many of whom are not adequately protected by existing guidelines. Radon surveys across multiple industries and occupations are needed to better characterize occupational exposure. These results can be used to identify exposed workers, and to support lung cancer prevention programs within these groups.

Abstract: The current global energy challenge which affects most developing countries in particular, is of major source of concern today. The availability of less expensive techniques of storing excess generated energy is critical to the success of the renewable energy roadmaps implementation. In this study, hydrothermal and chemical leaching methods have been used to synthesize MnO2 nanoparticles using KMnO4 and MnSO4 as precursors at 140 °C and from natural local manganese ore. Activated Carbon (ACF) have also been produced from agricultural Cashew biomass waste, through a physical carbonization and KOH activation process using temperatures of 700 °C – 900 °C for periods between 1 and 2 h. The as-prepared materials have been characterized via XRD, Raman, FTIR, SEM. Electrochemical performance measurements (CV, EIS and GCD) were carried out on the prepared electrodes. The specific capacitance values obtained were in the range of 2.8 F/g - 6.5 F/g at different scan rates of 20 mV -50 mV respectively in a potential range of -0.4 to +0.4 V and -0.4 to +0.6 V for the various types of electrodes.

40. What Determines Students' Behavioural Intention to Use Mobile Learning Management Systems? Empirical Answers from a Blended Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: This study investigated the determinants of students' behavioural intention (BI) to use mobile learning management systems (M-LMS) in a blended distance learning environment. The study was undertaken at the College of Distance Education (CoDE) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana. Using a predictive correlational design, a 28-item questionnaire based on the extended technology acceptance model (E-TAM) was used to gather data from 370 undergraduate students. Both descriptive statistics and multiple-linear regression with the stepwise method were applied in the analysis. The study revealed that factors such as perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), perceived educational compatibility (PEC), and facilitating conditions (FC) were significant determinants of students' BI to use M-LMS for learning in a blended distance environment, with PEOU being the best predictor. The study provides useful recommendations for sustainable M-LMS implementation at college and in similar environments.

Abstract: Abstract Background Food security exists when households have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food at all times that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Food security remains a serious challenge for many households in Ghana and the situation is even more prevalent among smallholder farmers. Therefore, this study had its objectives to assess food security status and also estimate their determinants for policy recommendations. Methodology Using data collected from 2,603 farm households across Ghana and employing an ordered probit model the determinants of food security among farm households were assessed. The food security indicator, Food Consumption Score (FCS) which combines diet diversity, frequency of consumption and relative nutritional importance of different food groups was used to determine food security status of farm households. Results Results showed that farm households (76%) across Ghana were within the acceptable household food consumption groups. Nonetheless, 19% and 6% of farm households, respectively, were within the borderline and poor food consumption groups, respectively. Determinants of food security included experience, gender, improved variety adoption, access to credit and location. Conclusion Food security risk is prevalent among farm households in Ghana. Based on the results on determinants of food security, the suggestions are that government and private institutions should create an enabling environment to enhancing credit access and encouraging adoptions of improved crops varieties for increased production.

46. Exploring Factors That Facilitate Acculturation Strategies and Academic Success of West African Immigrant Youth in Urban Schools

Abstract: Immigrant students in U.S. educational system experience challenges learning to adapt and integrate into new educational environments. Little is known, however, about factors that facilitate acculturation strategies of immigrant youth from West Africa and how they affect their academic success and challenges faced. Considering the current political discourse over the influence of immigration in U.S. schools, 20 immigrant youth from Ghana and Nigeria were recruited and interviewed in the metropolitan area of New York City. Analyses of semi-structured interviews revealed that teacher, parent, and peer support; social and electronic media; and extracurricular activities emerged as the factors that helped acculturation strategies and academic success. Challenging factors were dealing with sociocultural differences; discrimination, stress, and social integration; and language differences. The article discusses the implications of these findings for teachers to understand acculturation strategies to help West African immigrant youth to adapt, acculturate, and integrate into new school environments.

47. Diabetic Ketoacidosis Misdiagnosed and Managed as Typhoid Ileal Perforation in a Ghanaian Child: A Case Report

Abstract: We report on a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy, who presented to a district hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) but was diagnosed wrongly as a small bowel perforation due to typhoid fever. He presented with weakness, poor feeding, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain. General examination revealed a lethargic, drowsy, and severely dehydrated patient. His abdomen was diffusely tender more in the right ileac fossa. Investigations including complete blood count, blood smear for malaria parasites, urinalysis, and abdominal ultrasound yielded unremarkable results. Hemoglobin level was 12.4 grams per decilitre. He was diagnosed as typhoid ileal perforation and laparotomy was done, but the bowels and all other intra-abdominal organs were found to be normal. A blood glucose test was done intraoperatively, and it found very high hyperglycaemia. This led to the suspicion of DKA, which was confirmed through urine dipstick testing for high urine ketones and a high glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) test result. He was then treated for DKA, which resolved on the second day of admission, but the surgical wound healed after twelve days. Our account emphasizes the need for testing for blood glucose in critically ill children and adolescents with suspected severe infections or acute medical conditions that require admission or surgical intervention. This owes to the fact that the clinical features of undiagnosed diabetes, especially if it progresses to DKA, are similar to those of infections and disorders managed via surgical treatment, which are rather more common in Ghana and Africa.
